TOUR DE GREENBELT
Durham a ‘mecca’ for
cyclists: Steve Parish
from page 1
biking enthusiasts or
novices can choose their
preferred length to cycle
and take a marshalled
ride through an outlined
route. In Durham, three
paths have been laid out
by organizers at 20 kilo-
metres, 43 kilometres or
117 kilometres.
The Durham section
takes place on Sept. 27.
The tour, billed as
“a fresh-air festival on
wheels” encourages peo-
ple to get out and explore
the land the Province has
set aside as green space.
The provincial govern-
ment has done a tremen-
dous job preserving the
space, Ajax Mayor Steve
Parish said.
The mayor recently
completed a long bike
ride for United Way and
said he was struck by
many things while he was
riding, including what a
great resource all the local
green space is.
“Durham is an absolute
mecca for cyclists,” Mayor
Parish said.
This is the second time
the event has run and
the first year the tour has
come to Durham.
Last year, organizers
had prepared for 650 par-
ticipants and had over
1,100 enthusiasts come
out, tour manager Peter
Hart said. The balance of
people had to be turned
away because organizers
didn’t have the capacity
to have that many extra
participants. This year
they decided to expand.
“There is obviously a
huge demand for cycling,”
he said.
The Durham ride takes
participants past farms,
tree-lined streets, ponds,
lakes and creeks, he said.
All three versions of the
Durham ride start and
end at Greenwood Con-
servation area in Ajax.
Depending on the route
cyclists chose, they will
get a chance to check
out the Rouge River Val-
ley, the historic hamlet
of Whitevale and several
kilometres of parks and
farmland.
Participation is $40 per
person, but kids under 14
are free with a registered
adult (two kids per adult).
The event is revenue-neu-
tral and the fee includes a
rider kit, snacks, bever-
ages, ride support, bike
tune-up and a lunch
made of local food. All
riders must wear helmets.

Province begins
education campaign
to promote flu shots
BY CHRIS HALL
chall@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Advice on how to
prevent the flu this winter season
should be arriving at every home in
Durham Region soon, courtesy of
the Province.
In an effort to provide Ontar-
ians with up-to-date information
on the flu, in particular the H1N1
virus, better known as swine flu,
and to encourage residents to get
vaccinated, the Ministry of Health
and Long-Term Care is embarking
on an ambitious public education
campaign.
According to David Jensen, a
ministry spokesman, the Province
began mailing out 5 million bro-
chures via Canada Post to house-
holds across Ontario on Monday.
Included in the information pam-
phlet are a variety of tips residents
can review to avoid the common
seasonal flu and H1N1 flu, as well
as contact numbers for pandemic
preparedness and health care.
The cost for the program is about
$1.5 million, said Mr. Jensen.
“There are a lot of preventative
messages in (the brochure), such
as washing your hands, coughing
into your sleeve and, if you’re sick,
stay home,” said Mr. Jensen.
And, while the Province encour-
ages residents each year to get their
flu shot, the arrival of the H1N1
virus this year has spurred Ontario
to take extra steps, such as sending
out a brochure, he added.
“It’s a new strain of flu and will
make for a very difficult type of sea-
son,” he said.
The Province is recommending
that residents get vaccinated with
both the seasonal flu and H1N1 flu
shot, said Mr. Jensen.
The seasonal flu shot is clinical-
ly proven to prevent illness, while
clinical trials underway on the
H1N1 shot have “shown it to be
effective,” he said.
It takes about one week after
receiving the shot for protection to
begin, he added.
The flu season in Ontario typi-
cally starts in October and ends in
April. A seasonal flu vaccination
will not protect people against the
H1N1 flu virus, warns the Prov-
ince.
For those nonplussed by the
potential for becoming sick with
the flu, Mr. Jensen urges residents
to think of others if they’re not con-
cerned for their own health.
“There are people out there who
think, ‘so what if I get sick’,” said Mr.
Jensen. “But the flu is contagious
and there is the possibility of pass-
ing it along to an older person or
someone who is pregnant and they
may develop complications.
“We’re asking people to think of
others.
“It’s hitting the young, healthy
population and that’s quite dif-
ferent than other strains,” said Mr.
Jensen.

No need for another
election now
To the editor:
Re: Skip the federal election and try governing
for a change, editiorial, Sept. 3.
Absolutely! The decision by the Liberal
Party to push for another election possibly a
few weeks from now is ridiculous.
Polls indicate an overwhelming majority
of Canadians have no interest in an election
and the results would be virtually the same.
Take the $300 million it costs taxpayers to
run an election and give it to those who need
it like students, the elderly and the poor.
Enough of this constant call for elections
already!
Elected politicians, be thankful for the well-
paid jobs you already have.
James Hodgins

Limit MPs to two terms
To the editor:
Skip the federal election, try governing for a
change, editorial, Sept. 3.
Canada will never have a majority gov-
ernment. We have five federal parties, every
election splits the vote.
We have the Conservatives now in power
doing their best after the Liberals were in
power for many years and did nothing.
The Green Party is, as usual out to lunch.
The Bloc wants out of Canada with as much
money as they can stuff in their pockets and
the NDP has a leader who will do anything to
get a bigger office.
I propose a two-term election limit for poli-
ticians. When they exceed two elections, they
must step down. This proposal will make
them work harder at consensus building. If
they continue to call elections, they are out
on their duff after the second election; they
cannot run for a third term.
Maybe they will work harder for Canadi-
ans because every third election we will have
a fresh bunch of MPs who better get to work
for Canadians.

ANIMALS
Lack of kindness
for cat’s owner upsetting
To the editor:
Today, sometime before 9 a.m., my daugh-
ter’s cat Ricky was struck and hit by a car on
our street, two doors down from us. It appears
she was struck at our driveway and dragged
down two doors. Her fur was embedded or
smeared in the street. She managed to drag
herself off the road and meow at our neigh-
bour’s door. Our kind neighbour came down
to get us and we took her home, wrapped in
her blanket. She is now wrapped in the blan-
ket with her favourite toy until we can decide
what we will do with her remains. Ricky was
properly tagged, she was wearing her collar
and she belonged to someone. She was not
some stray. My problem is that the driver did
not stop. Had the driver done so, she might
have noticed our cat’s tag and come up the
street to our house to explain what hap-
pened. But the driver didn’t and our wee cat
died battered and broken in our neighbour’s
driveway. You can tell a lot about people by
the way they treat animals.

Abortion photos compared
to smoking photos
To the editor:
I don’t know what all the fuss is about, since
pro-choice supporters don’t believe that a
fetus is a living human being but a collection
of cells. What’s wrong with parading around
with a picture of a group of dead cells? It’s no
worse than looking at pictures of decayed
teeth or diseased lungs on the front of a ciga-
rette package. It’s strange how we don’t hear
the same complaints from smokers about
these very distasteful photos.

P
Leash-free park good news for Pickering dog owners
Site in north end of City a
good location to run free
It looks like at last Fido and Rover, along
with their owners, will have a place to
call their own and run free, without the
need for a leash.
On Monday night, Pickering council-
lors are expected to approve the location
for an off-leash dog park on lands owned
by the Toronto and Region Conservation
Authority.
Barring any last-minute glitches, the 41
hectares west of Valley Farm Road and
south of the Third Concession will finally
be home to the park, after a number of
false starts.
A group of dog enthusiasts has been
working with City staff for years to try to
find the right location.
In the past, reasons such as excessive
dog barking and concerns about possible
drug dealing after hours have been given
by neighbours for reasons why the park
should not be built in their area.
But none of those reasons would be a
concern with the suggested area because
it is far enough away from any homes to
be a problem.
The area has been used in previous
years by the City for summer programs
so adding a leash-free dog park isn’t a big
stretch as a good use.
The residents and City staff should be
applauded for their tenacity in finding
just the right spot.
They never gave up, even after pro-
posed site after proposed site was turned
down.
“The goal is to make this park a suc-
cess, not an area of concern,” said Nicole
Scarlett of the Dog Park working group.
The City just needs to look east, at the
two dog parks in Ajax, to see how dog
owners are drawn to the area.
The parks are well-used and offer a ser-
vice not too many other municipalities
provide. Once the park is up and in use,
Pickering should make sure it promotes
the area to all residents.
And those dog owners who take advan-
tage of the new facility should make sure
they follow proper rules so there won’t
be any reasons to close the park.
Dogs shouldn’t have aggression issues,
all dogs should be licensed and above all,
make sure you take a bag to pick up any
mess your four-legged companion may
leave behind after a run.

Pickering council set to approve off-leash dog park
BY KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Fido and Rover
will be prancing for joy if all goes
as expected at Pickering council
next week.
Monday night the executive
committee approved a new loca-
tion for an off-leash dog park
after the Dog Park Working
Group and the City have sug-
gested many possible locations
over the past three years.
Chief Administrative Officer
Tom Quinn told the News Adver-
tiser in July he’d make sure to find
a suitable location where every-
one would be happy after many
locations were rejected due to
residents’ concerns. So finally,
Grand Valley Park, lands owned
by the Toronto and Region Con-
servation Authority (TRCA) west
of Valley Farm Road and south
of Third Concession Road, was
approved as the location for a
dog park by the committee.
“I think it’s an important fea-
ture,” said Ward 1 Regional
Councillor Bonnie Littley. “And
I think it adds to a community,
really.”
Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill
McLean agreed, saying potential
residents look for these types of
amenities when moving to a new
area, and added the central loca-
tion is ideal.
The location is 41 hectares and
was used by the City for summer
programs years ago. In recent
years, the land has been used
only for public access to the
Seaton Hiking Trail and for dog-
walking purposes.
The TRCA has already
approved the use of the land for
the park, and it will go ahead as
long as staff approves a site plan
the City is to work on with the
TRCA.
The site will contain a fenced-in
park and a parking lot. Remain- ing areas will be reviewed for
possible future uses including
new public trail loops and con-
nections. Nicole Scarlett of the
Dog Park working group said she
and the group would be glad to
assist in that project.
“Most people need to get the
exercise along with their pet,”
she said at the meeting.
Some councillors had criticized
suggested locations because the
park was only intended as a pilot
project. But the general consen-
sus at the meeting was this loca-
tion could become a permanent
fixture in Pickering.
Ms. Scarlett thanked staff for
its hard work and said while
there have been some frustrat-
ing times over the past few years,
the group’s glad a location has
been chosen that will suit every-
one.
“The goal is to make this park a
success, not an area of concern,”
she said.

Locals challenge
officials at public
meeting
BY KRISTEN CALIS

PICKERING -- Residents shared
their opposition to the ‘Big Pipe’
expansion at a Sept. 10 public meet-
ing.
The meeting at the Petticoat
Creek Community Centre, meant to
inform the public on York and Dur-
ham’s water and wastewater master
plans, turned its focus to a situation
that’s upset many north Pickering
residents.
The southeast collector trunk
sewer (Big Pipe) is currently under-
going plans for an expansion to
accommodate York Region’s and
Durham Region’s growing popu-
lations. The Big Pipe takes sew-
age from York Region to the Duffin
Creek Water Pollution Control Plant
in Pickering. The plant also treats
about 20 per cent of Durham’s sew-
age.
Part of the expansion is the con-
struction of an odour control facil-
ity, which was originally planned
to go just south of the Cherrywood
West subdivision in north Pickering.
But after activist group Stop the
Stink strongly opposed it, Durham
council also opposed the location.
It was later moved just into the York
boundary, on the west side of the
York-Durham line, between the
Taunton-Steeles connection and
the 4th Concession Road.
Residents don’t understand why
Pickering has to treat sewage from
York.
“The odour control facility is a
nightmare,” said resident Rhonda
Mendes. “It’s like David and Goli-
ath.”
Officials at the meeting empha-
sized that the pipe route was
designed by the Province in the
1970s.
Wayne Green, the project man-
ager from York, said the Region
has sent notifications, left flyers at
homes in some cases, put notifica-
tions in the newspaper and feels
York has followed a “complete and
comprehensive” consultation pro-
cess.
He added the odour control
facility was moved to a midpoint
between urban areas in both
Pickering and Markham.
Marilyn Metcalfe has lived in her
home since 1981. The pipe is now
planned to run through her neigh-
bourhood, and she said she has
received notice that part of her
property will be expropriated. She
attended the meeting for more
information.
“It seems like they just want to
push it through,” she said.
Last week, she spoke to the Dur-
ham works committee about her
concerns, saying there were still
many unanswered questions and
felt she was being pressured to sign
an agreement with York for expro-
priation, even when she disagreed
with the appraised value of her
property.
“On reflection, I feel I have been
hit by a sugarcoated steamroller
that isn’t quite finished with me
yet,” she said.
She said she didn’t find out until
April 2008 that the pipe would go
under her property, even after she
had been to prior public meetings.
Mr. Green said the reason resi-
dents weren’t informed until 2008
about the possible expropriations
is because the path wasn’t defined
until then. Expropriations are cur-
rently being debated, he said, and
York wants to have in place an
expropriation opportunity if it has
to follow that course.
“The expropriation is only a
mechanism to acquire property but
it’s certainly not the intended route
to follow,” he said.
He added fair market value is
always paid and York has conduct-
ed full appraisals.
Stop the Stink plans to attend the
Pickering council meeting on Mon-
day, Sept. 21 to hear plans by Ward
1 Regional Councillor Bonnie Lit-
tley and Ward 3 Regional Council-
lor Rick Johnson to bring forward a
motion asking the MOE for a “time
out” on the project.
The Big Pipe environmental
assessment report was provided
to the Ministry of the Environment
on Aug. 21. After a ministry review,
there will be another five-week
public consultation period.

Navy salutes fallen soldier from Durham bridge
SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND
OSHAWA -- Navy personnel from HMCS Ville de Quebec, on a visit to Oshawa, saluted as the motor-
cade carrying the body of the latest soldier killed in Afghanistan, Private Patrick Lormand from the
2nd Battalion, Royal 22nd Regiment based in Valcartier Quebec, passed along the Highway of Heroes
Sept. 16.
BY CRYSTAL CRIMI
ccrimi@durhamregion.com
OSHAWA -- “Salute!”
To the call, a row of 38 navy per-
sonnel raised their hands in the
gesture of respect Wednesday to
the latest Canadian soldier killed in
Afghanistan.
The crew of black suited, white
capped naval members made
a special visit to the Highway of
Heroes in Oshawa to participate in
a bridge-top repatriation ceremony
for Private Patrick Lormand.
The 21-year-old private was killed
Sept. 13 in a roadside explosion in
the Panjwai district southwest of
Kandahar City.
He was a member of the 2nd Bat-
talion, Royal 22nd Regiment based
in Valcartier, Quebec.
“I’ve seen it on the news, I’ve never
seen it in person though,” said Steve
Vaillancourt, an able seaman, of the
ceremony.
Mr. Vaillancourt, along with the
other navy personnel in attendance,
were in Oshawa this week as part of
a six-week tour aboard the HMCS
Ville De Quebec. The ship’s visit is
intended to raise awareness about
the navy and its opportunities.
“I was the one that pointed out
hey guys, we’re right beside the
Highway of Heroes,” said Mr. Vail-
lancourt, as the sound of cars and
trucks sped by underneath the Sim-
coe Street bridge.
The 21-year-old from Montreal
found out from a cabbie that the
ceremony was coming through the
region.
“We wanted to come pay our
respects,” Mr. Vaillancourt said.
Being up there with everyone else,
waiting for the hearse and soldier’s
family to pass by was an experience
of sadness and pride for him.
“There’s a lot of emotion that
floods through you,” he said.
Army Corporal Kristine Brassard
shared similar feelings as she stood
on the bridge for the first time, wait-
ing for the soldier’s hearse to pass.
“It’s an honour to be here, but it’s
sad,” said the Quebec native, who’s
serving onboard the ship.
At 25 years old, she has been in
the army for four years. Her hus-
band is a leading seaman and her
parents are both ex-military.
“I’ve never lost anybody in my
family due to that, but it hits home
when you have someone other than
yourself, that you realize it could be
in my family,” she said.

Drumming for a

PICKERING -- A little boy
with a big heart plans to
drum outside of a local
burger joint in Pickering
Friday night.
At 6:30 p.m. on Friday,
Sept. 18, Darius Parsons will
drum outside of Big M Burg-
er (711 Krosno Blvd., off Liv-
erpool Road South), also the
night of its Car Cruise Night,
to continue collecting dona-
tions for the Canadian Can-
cer Society.
“My grandma and my
grandad both died from
cancer and I don’t want any
more people to die from
cancer,” the eight-year-old
said.
He’s been doing his
“Drumming for a Cure”
campaign throughout the
summer at various Pickering
sites, playing to CDs and
asking people to donate
what they can. So far he’s
raised exactly $2,527.78.
“If everybody in Pickering
donated just $1, together we
would raise over $90,000,”
he said.
Darius is also challenging
other young drummers to
do the same thing and see
if they can raise even more
than him.

Packing healthy school lunches for the kids
If it’s possible, kids love fruit and vegetable cut-ups.
Deborah Lay, Durham Region Health Department
Durham Region nutritionist
provides tips for making
tasty school lunches
BY CRYSTAL CRIMI
ccrimi@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- By incorporating leftovers,
easy-to-eat foods and variety, packing a
school lunch full of nutrition doesn’t have
to be complicated.
Deborah Lay, a public health nutritionist
at the Durham Region Health Department,
has some tips for preparing a school lunch
with enough nutrients to get kids through
the day.
“The best thing I can suggest is to choose
from three of the four food groups,” Ms. Lay
said.
They include: fruits and vegetables;
grains; milk products or substitutes; and
protein.
But it’s important to make sure selections
are tasty, she said. You can pack a lunch full
of healthiness, but if kids don’t like it, it’ll
end up in the trash.
To help prevent that, get kids involved
in making and planning their lunch, she
said. She encourages planning an efficient
assembly line with a designated drawer for
preparation items and, if possible, an area
in the fridge just for lunch items.
“If it’s possible, kids love fruit and vegeta-
ble cut-ups,” Ms. Lay said. “Appeal is every-
thing.”
Pack tomatoes separately so they don’t
make a sandwich soggy and keep seals tight
on drinking cups so they don’t leak.
Adding colour and variety can help make
a lunch more appealing, too, she added.
In sandwiches, use different multi-grain,
whole grain, or enriched-with-fibre breads,
such as pita, English muffins, and buns.
Change the filling using items such as bean
spreads, hummus, meat or grated cheese
with grilled vegetables and try different
spreads including teriyaki sauce, salsa,
salad dressing or mayo with dijon, Ms. Lay
said.
Try sending hot meals, too, sometimes,
such as soups and stews, she said.
“Always incorporate, where you can, left-
overs,” Ms. Lay said.
By planning ahead for the week, items
such as stir fry, chili in a thermos or lasagna
with a salad can be sent for lunch.
“Kids will absolutely love it because it’s
different than a sandwich,” Ms. Lay said,
adding it also reminds them of home.
Send along crackers or a whole grain roll
too, for items such as soups and chili, she
said.
“So you’re hitting a lot of (food groups)
that way,” she added. “It’s not that hard to
do.”
Pasta and potato salads can make good
sides too, she said.
Individual yogurts, low-fat
but not necessarily with
sweeteners; sliced fruits
and vegetables with
different dips; dried
fruit, fresh or canned
fruit cocktail packed
in fruit juice or water,
but not in syrup; and
even pudding because
of its dairy content are
some good choices, she
said.
For drinks, 100-per
cent, unsweetened fruit
juice even from concentrate,
milk -- plain or chocolate --
and water are among those she
recommends.

Pickering winger up for challenge
this season with Oshawa Generals
BY SHAWN CAYLEY
scayley@durhamregion.com
OSHAWA -- Andy Andreoff has high hopes for this Ontario Hockey
League season, and his coach has high hopes for him.
The 18-year-old Pickering resident is entering his second full sea-
son with the Oshawa Generals and as the team transitions through yet
another rebuilding phase, Andreoff thinks the young club will open
some eyes around the league this year.
“We’re a young team, and we’re going to be the underdogs, but that’s
OK. I think we’re going to surprise a lot of teams,” says Andreoff.
While that remains to be seen, Andreoff’s coach and general man-
ager, Chris DePiero, has heightened the expectations on 6-foot 190-
pound left winger.
“The expectation level is for him to step up with offensive production
and reliability to us as a coaching staff,” says DePiero. “That to me is big
as a veteran on this team and a veteran in this league. The expectation
level on his own part has to be in the same vein and he can’t be satis-
fied and complacent. We’re going to challenge everyone on that, but I
expect high things from Andy.”
With only 11 goals in 91 career OHL games to his credit, just how
much offence Andreoff can add to the attack is in question, however,
DePiero fully believes the ability exists for him to do so.
“I think he controls the puck very well, specifically down low in the
offensive areas, bellow the circles,” explains DePiero. “I think he does
a great job on the cycles. (Sunday) he scored a goal on a nice shot. He’s
got a great little snap shot. We’re just trying to challenge him to use that
shot a little more.”
He’ll be asked to do just that going forward, especially if the likes of
Brett Parnham, a 50-goal man from a year ago and Kory Nagy, who was
second on the team in goals, don’t return to the club.

DURHAM -- Around the league,
a number of Durham Region
players will be asked to step up
for their teams this season.
In Barrie, Burketon’s Luke
Pither should make an impact as
an overager with the Colts, while
Cody Alcock and Brett Mackie
of Whitby and Courtice’s Dylan
Goddard will skate for George
Burnett in Belleville. In Bramp-
ton, Pickering’s Ian Watters will
have an opportunity to play on a
rebuilding Battalion team, while
in Erie, defender Chris Breen
of Uxbridge will try to help the
Otters return to the playoffs.
In Guelph, Whitby’s Brandon
Foote is recovering from hip
surgery, but should be back in
goal in the new year. Kingston,
meanwhile, will rely on Good-
wood’s Ethan Werek to provide
offence, along with Ajax’s Colt
Kennedy.
In Mississauga, Whitby’s
Dustin Ekelman will suit up
as an overager, while Emerson
Clark of Whitby will join the
Oshawa Generals. Ottawa might
have the most impressive group
of locals with Oshawa’s Dalton
Smith, Brooklin’s Ryan Martin-
dale and Bowmanville’s Tyler
Cuma, while in Peterborough,
Whitby’s Pat Daley returns for
his overage season with the
Petes.
Rounding out the rest of the
locals are Whitby’s Josh Shalla
and Daniel Pachis with Saginaw,
Uxbridge’s Brock Beukeboom in
Sault Ste. Marie, Bowmanville’s
Mitch Heard in Plymouth, Ajax’s
Marcus Carroll and Mark Ram-
kema in Owen Sound and Cour-
tice’s Greg Nemisz, who returns
to Windsor to help the Spitfires
in their attempt to repeat as OHL
and Memorial Cup champions.

OSHAWA -- Pickering’s Andy Andreoff will be relied on to provide some leadership and scoring this

Ajax wins
league title
for third year
in a row
AJAX -- For the third year
in a row, the Ajax U10
Dynamite girls’ soccer
team, from the Ajax Soc-
cer Club, has captured its
league title.
Not only did Ajax win the
league for the third con-
secutive year, but they have
done it in style by capturing
the league and being unde-
feated in league play for
three consecutive years.
For the 2009 season, the
Dynamite played in the
CESL against teams from
Peterborough, Darling-
ton, Oshawa, Whitby and
Ajax. Playing 14 games, the
Dynamite won 13 games
and tied one. They scored
an impressive 124 goals
and only allowed seven.
In the final game of the
season, against a talent-
ed Darlington team, the
Dynamite showed com-
posure and persevered.
With 12 minutes left in the
game, and down 2-0, coach
Michelle White changed
the team formation to a
more attacking one, and
the Dynamite, with some
tenacious and skillful play-
ing, was able to equalize.
“My team has a lot of
heart and never gives up,”
said coach Michelle White.
“We had already clenched
the league, but I knew the
undefeated season was
very important to the girls.
I decided to give it our all
by attacking and went with
only one defender. Losing
by 2-0 or 4-0 didn’t matter
at this stage. The girls were
able to adapt to the new
formation, and Darlington
could not handle the added
pressure of the Dynamite
attack.”
Two days earlier, the
Dynamite captured the
CESL Cup by defeating Ajax
Turboz 5-0 in the semifi-
nals and Whitby A 6-0 in
the finals. With 16 teams
competing, the Dynamite
secured a berth in the semi-
final by cruising past Ajax
United 14-1 and Pickering
B 7-0.
For the indoor season, the
Dynamite will be playing in
the Hangar at Downsview
where they will be return-
ing as reigning champs.
Team members are Sinead
Kappel, Kristien Lindo,
Alexis Ferreira, Parys Kerr,
Emily Gauvreau, Milan
Danford, Tonaya Black-
stock, Nicole Dodge, Nicole
White, Fallon Rodrigues,
Karly Paxton, Julia Snow,
Courtney Correia and
Lindsay Arnott. The team is
coached by Michelle White,
and assisted by Stephen
Lindo, Linda Correia and
Roland Chow.

FOOTBALL
Glavic signs with Hamilton Tiger Cats
PICKERING -- Sasha Glav-
ic has returned to where his
CFL career started.
The Hamilton Tiger Cats
announced Tuesday they
have signed the linebacker.
Glavic, a 6-foot-3, 191-lb.
native of Pickering, spent
the first two seasons (2007,
2008) of his career with the
Ticats before being traded to
the Saskatchewan Roughrid-
ers back in May. He was sub-
sequently released by the
Roughriders on June 25.
In 19 career games, the 26-
year-old University of Wind-
sor product has recorded 16
special teams tackles, one
defensive tackle and one
forced fumble.
SENIOR LACROSSE
Former Redmen captain
wins MVP award
BY BRIAN MCNAIR
bmcnair@durhamregion.com
NEW WESTMINSTER -- Shawn Williams
now has his name engraved alongside
such lacrosse legends as Paul and Gary
Gait, John Tavares and John Grant Jr. And,
ironically enough, Wayne Colley.
Williams, a 35-year-old
Oshawa resident and teacher
at Donald A. Wilson Secondary
School in Whitby, was named
the most valuable player of the
Mann Cup national lacrosse
championship Saturday, after
helping the Brampton Excelsi-
ors to a 9-7 overtime win and
a seven-game victory over the
host New Westminster Salmon-
bellies.
The irony is that it was Colley,
now the general manager of the
Brooklin Redmen, who took the
bold step of trading the Redmen captain
to the Excelsiors prior to the Major Series
Lacrosse deadline this summer.
Although Williams had long said he
could never see himself wearing anoth-
er jersey in the league, winning a second
Mann Cup has surely eased the pain. He
also won the Mann Cup in 2000 with the
Redmen, but hadn’t had a sniff at it since.
“There were both special, definitely,
but this one was more of a war,” Williams
said of a series that featured four overtime
games, one of which went to double over-
time.
“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in
my life,” he added. “Everyone has always
said it’s a tough thing to win on the road
and, let me tell you, it was. It was seven
pure battles. Every game could have gone
either way ... There’s not one of our guys
who wasn’t totally physically and mental-
ly drained, that’s for sure.”
Williams had a goal and two assists in
the clinching win Saturday and finished
with 9-20-29 numbers, five more points
than runner-up and teammate Colin
Doyle.
The series began with a bench-clearing
brawl in Game 1, won 12-9 by the Salmon-
bellies, and went back and forth
from there, with the Excelsi-
ors winning the next two, the
Salmonbellies the two after
that, and Brampton the final
two, both in overtime.
Another local player and for-
mer Redmen made the win
possible. Whitby’s Bill Greer
set up the tying goal in the sev-
enth and deciding game, tak-
ing advantage of a turnover to
assist on Mike Carnegie’s top-
shelf tally with just 16 seconds
remaining. While saying any
number of players on his team could have
been named MVP, Williams gladly accept-
ed the trophy.
“There’s only one Mike Kelly Award win-
ner every year and I’ve only been a part of
two Mann Cups, so to have my name on
that trophy is a huge honour,” said Wil-
liams. “It could have gone to a number
of guys, but I was the one so I’ll obvious-
ly take it. But, winning the Mann Cup is
obviously the bigger thing.”
The Excelsiors also defeated the Salmon-
bellies in last year’s final, in Brampton.
This year’s win capped a fantastic sum-
mer for Williams, who also won the Major
League Lacrosse field championship with
the Toronto Nationals.

Serville signs with Stouffville Spirit
Former
Ajax-Pickering
Raider joins
blue-line
DURHAM -- A graduate of the
Ajax-Pickering Raiders Minor
Midgets has caught on with the
Stouffville Spirit of the Central
Canadian Hockey League.
Brennan Serville, a 6-foot-2,
170-pounder who was an eighth-
round selection of the Sudbury
Wolves in this year’s OHL draft,
will patrol the blue line for the
Spirit. Last season in 56 games
with the Raiders, Serville had 4-
15-19 offensive numbers and 28
penalty minutes.
He was one of about 50-60
1993-born players to attend
Stouffville’s main training camp
last month. By the end of camp,
Spirit GM Ken Burrows had to
whittle that number down to just
two 16-year-olds as per league
rules.
“By the end of the year, they
could be among our top five
defencemen,” said Burrows of
Serville and Ryan Zupancic,
who was a fifth-round pick of
the Sarnia Sting. “They’re both
very mobile and good skaters.”
It was a challenging decision,
especially with some young
high-end forwards and a cou-
ple of candidates from the
Whitchurch-Stouffville area in
the mix, Burrows said.
It boiled down to position.
“We knew going into the sea-
son on paper we were short on
defence and looking at our for-
wards, we knew we had a lot
of good forwards,” said Bur-
rows. “When we weighed things
out, we felt we needed help on
defence. Zupancic and Serville
can play any time. We think we
got two good ones.”
Serville will play a home game
of sorts at the Ajax Community
Centre on Sunday, Sept. 27 when
the Spirit visit the Ajax Attack at
3 p.m.
