Last year, the United Way just barely made its $1.75-million fund- raising goal and it was tough set- ting a goal this year, said Bonnie Harkness, executive director for the organization. “We struggled a lot around the goal because the need is so much greater ... We decided we would set the same goal of $1.75 million,” she said. On Wednesday morning, the organization kicked off its corpo- rate campaign with a breakfast at Port, a south Pickering restaurant. There are seven companies named as pacesetters for 2009 including Areva, which sponsored the break- fast, and Hubbell Canada, Nokia, Ontario Power Generation, Purdue Pharma, Messier-Dowty and Verid- ian. All seven have pledged to meet or exceed their 2008 fundraising totals. This year’s campaign chairman is Kevin Modeste, a familiar face to many in the community as he’s run as a candidate for the New Demo- cratic Party. But it is his community ties, most recently as a board mem- ber for Herizon House, that led him to become this year’s campaign chairman. Mr. Modeste will serve as the public face of the United Way’s 2009 campaign. “This year we’ve adopted the theme ‘United We Can’ for our campaign,” he said. The United Way supports dozens of local community agencies that help everyone from kids to seniors and one in three local residents will come into contact with a member agency. Ms. Harkness said a recent effort included packing 900 back- packs with school supplies for kids who needed them. “Although this number sounds impressive, it does not meet the entire need, which is 1,500 through- out the region,” she said. The pacesetter companies are eager to help meet those types of needs by participating in this year’s campaign and in fact, Areva has already surpassed its 2009 fundrais- ing goal, said president and CEO Roger Alexander. The other compa- nies were also ready to take on the challenge. Mr. Modeste also pointed out that while the breakfast launched the corporate campaign, the pub- lic campaign kicks off Sept. 13 with ‘Bon Appetit: Tastes of the World’ at the Pickering Recreation Complex from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tick- ets are $15 for adults, $8 for children aged five to 13, and $40 for a family of two adults and two kids. There will be more than 20 restaurants participating in the event. For more information on the United Way or tickets call 905-686- 0606. SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND PICKERING -- A breakfast kicked off the Ajax-Pickering-United Way’s annual fundraising campaign. Taking part in the festivities at the Port Restaurant were campaign chairman Kevin Modeste, Don Terry from Ontario Power Generation and Randy Steffan from Purdue Pharma. More than 50 attend meeting on ways to stop odour-control facility BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Despite York Region’s decision to move the location for a proposed odour-control facility originally planned for Pickering back to York, residents are still fighting it. “Why should it affect us and not York at the same time?” said Cherrywood West resident Gordon Belfry at a recent meeting on the topic. The Region of York had originally planned to build an odour control facility that’s needed to accommodate the expan- sion of the ‘Big Pipe,’ which takes sewage from York to the Duffin Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in south Pickering, on Altona Road, south of Cherrywood West. But after opposition from residents, Durham Region council didn’t support the location. Durham chairman Roger Anderson and York chairman Bill Fisch then signed an agreement to build the OCF on the west side of the York-Durham boundary, between the Taunton-Steeles connec- tion and the 4th Conces- sion Road. Booster fans, which will help push the odour back into York Region, are still planned for Altona Road, Fairport Road and Scar- borough-Pickering Town- line Road. Local group Stop the Stink formed early this year to fight an OCF they feel would negatively affect Pickering residents. The group held a meet- ing to update residents last Thursday. Mr. Belfry’s home would have been 300 metres from the original location, and is now 800 metres away. However, since the winds travel southeast, it’ll be even worse, he said. “It’s like a straight shot right across the field,” he said. Also, since he uses well water, he’s concerned with the water quality should any toxins from the facility leak into the soil. Stop the Stink mem- ber Devi Gopalan listed a number of concerns. Residents are worried about possible health risks, the fact they have yet to see a properly working OCF and mostly, that weren’t consulted on the new location, which wasn’t passed by council. Ms. Gopalan added the environmental assess- ment has already been handed to the Minister of the Environment, who has final say. Jennifer O’Connell, Pickering Ward 1 City Councillor, informed the group that she and Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean are planning to bring forward a motion that will seek a judicial review of the process. At Tuesday’s planning and development com- mittee meeting, she gave formal notice the motion will come to the next council meeting. No one from York Region attended Thurs- day’s meeting. But at a past public information session, Erin Mahoney, the commis- sioner of environmental services for York Region, said the OCF has been moved out of the concen- trated area and into a rural one instead based on the community’s opposition. “We responded to the community,” she said. “The best place is where we had it. On balance, we’ve heard the needs of the community and we’ve responded to it.” There would be “non- detectable odours coming out of the stack,” she said. Stop the Stink hopes as many people as possible will sign up for upcom- ing Durham Region coun- cil meetings to show their disagreement with the current location. More than 2,000 peo- ple have signed a petition against the OCF. Also, Stop the Stink attend- ed a rally recently at Bob Hunter Memorial Park in Markham, named after the founder of Green- peace and where the pipe is planned to go. -- with files from Keith Gil- ligan newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 10, 20094 AP ~~~~ “Last Call for All Young Actors, Singers and Dancers - Ages 10-17” Oshawa Little Theatre 62 Russett Avenue, Oshawa 905-723-0282 Visit; www.oshawalittletheatre.com for more information and the Audition Application Forms. BIG PIPE Stop the stink fight continues SUBMITTED PHOTO MARKHAM -- Jim Robb was one of many Pickering residents who attended a recent rally to protest con- struction of a York Region sewage pipe which would run through Pickering. Why should it affect us and not York at the same time? Gordon Belfry From page 1 accomplished is the bridge to a sustainable future in downtown Pickering,” said an excited Mayor Dave Ryan in an interview, adding the project won’t cost taxpayers or the City anything. He feels the bridge will be the catalyst for Picker- ing’s long-awaited down- town with its competitive tax rates and its ideal loca- tion as the first municipali- ty east of Toronto. He added the drive from Toronto to Pickering offers a reverse commute with less traffic. He envisions businesses, transit and culture thriving in the area, which he calls a “gateway to Durham.” In its regional transpor- tation plan, the Province has identified that area of Pickering as a transpor- tation hub and an urban growth centre. The project and enhanced transit will not only put Pickering on the map as a place to do business, visit and shop, but it will benefit transit users, said Gary McNeil, executive vice president of Metrolinx and managing director of GO Transit. “It’s going to be a real benefit to our customers to improve access to the sta- tion,” he said. The mayor was first opposed to the idea of a pedestrian bridge from the GO station since it didn’t have a destination point. But in April of 2006 he was told by the Municipal Prop- erty Assessment Corpora- tion (MPAC), which cur- rently has an office at Liv- erpool Road and Pickering Parkway, that more than 200 jobs would be forced to leave Pickering because the company was expanding and there was no space in the City to support the extra jobs. So the mayor contact- ed 20 Vic Management Inc. (Pickering Town Centre owner) and said he had an ideal tenant in mind if the company wanted to finally build a new office tower on the southwest corner of the PTC parking lot. “We now had a destina- tion point,” he said. Back in June, 20 Vic announced it was in fact building an eight-storey, 132,000-square foot office tower, constructed to LEED Silver standards, and the primary tenants would be MPAC. That got the ball rolling for the public-pri- vate partnership on the bridge. “Bringing in GO Transit is in full credit to the mayor,” said George Buckles, prin- cipal of 20 Vic. He added GO’s involve- ment is substantial in the development of the down- town core, and the bridge and mobility hub will also benefit the mall’s custom- ers and merchants. It was also announced that GO Transit and 20 Vic are jointly building a park- ing structure at the base of the building that will increase the tower’s height by an additional three sto- reys and provide more parking for GO customers. Mayor Ryan hopes the announcement puts at least some criticism to rest. “For those who say we don’t have a downtown I say ‘just watch us’,” he said. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 10, 20095 P Steve Bryan (East) PICKERING 641 Kingston Rd., Pickering 905-839-0533 $338* Jeff Zylstra (West) Very Competitive Prices on Home Insurance Annual Premium Includes: > Comprehensive coverage > $1,000 deductible > Replacement cost on contents and building > Enhanced water coverage * Above quote includes discounts for claims-free, new homes and Co-operators Advantage: tax not included. All content copyright Editorial Opinions UNIONS Start watching what governments are doing To the editor: I’ve been reading with interest the var- ious laments regarding the decline of unions in North America. And while I have sympathy for all those who suffer, I must say that, in my opin- ion, the days of a strong, organized work force are gone. You can write editorials, letters to newspapers, hold demonstrations, go on strike –- it all won’t make a bit of differ- ence in the end. The public is not the enemy here. They are the victims. Ask yourself the following questions: Is the middle class segment of society disappearing? What’s happening to health care in Canada? Are there powerful people in the world who can control economies, govern- ments, legislation and military opera- tions? Can politicians and governments around the world be bought? In the long run, who benefits the most from the establishment of the North American Free Trade Agreement? How much does the average Mexican auto worker make? Can a car company make more money without unions? By all means, try to save your unions but if the masses really want to change the world for the better, they had better start watching what their governments are doing and who they’re serving. Randy Gostlin Oshawa ENVIRONMENT Pesticide ban makes no sense To the editor: Re: Pesticide ban having ‘huge’ effects in Durham Region, Aug. 10. This pesticide ban is the most ridicu- lous thing I’ve ever heard of. What’s the real reason behind it? Political posturing. Nothing more. How is it that we now have a ban on residential and commercial ban yet the most important thing, our food, does not have a pesticide ban? Imported or Canadian grown, there are pesticides on our produce and we are all eating them. Think about that the next time you are chopping up your salad looking out your window at your yard of clover, dandeli- ons and thistles. Yet another genius move by the McGuinty government. But why? Well, grocery prices would go up and there would be a public revolt and politi- cal support would decrease. But with the current ban, they can pre- tend to look “green” when in fact they are not. This is just plain stupidity. Sure, I love green. Sure, I love reasonable concessions made to our lifestyle that help make a better future for our children. I’m a big fan of saving our environment but this makes so little sense and is so clearly a political move that it disgusts me. Think about it. Lawn care businesses cannot survive on pouring vinegar on lawns since it’s ineffective. We have to spend more money to over- seed, water, etc. to try to choke out the weeds. The Town budget will increase (thus our taxes) but never enough to beat out the weeds that will ultimately win out. I’m not even going to talk about the European countries that implemented the same ban seven years ago but are now reversing it because everything became unusable and uncontrollable. It’s ludicrous. Peter Wilson Ajax Wash up so H1N1 doesn’t strike at you or loved ones While they say there is “nothing to fear” from the H1N1 (swine flu) virus, that doesn’t mean provincial health officials aren’t doing all they can to get ready for a possible Ontario outbreak this fall. National trends of the virus are down but officials are expecting that this fall and winter will result in a busier than normal flu season. H1N1 immunization shots are in the works and will be released by the Prov- ince in the next two months. But there is much that can be done by members of the public before, during and after they receive the shots. Individuals should take a five-pronged common sense approach to H1N1, which left seven dead in Ontario as of last June. The best defence is intelligence and preparedness and these steps, provided by Telehealth Ontario, are essential flu tools this season: 1. Wash your hands thoroughly and often. Don’t just sprinkle water over your fingers. Thoroughly lather your palms and fin- gers and scrub well, in between front and back of your hands. Scrub each finger and thumb top to bottom each time and scrub each wrist as well. Thoroughly rinse with water and turn off the taps with the paper towel you use to dry your hands with. 2. Use alcohol-based sanitizer and keep them handy at work, in your car and at home. 3. Cough into your upper sleeve and cover your nose and mouth when you cough. 4. Stay home when you are sick to pre- vent the spread of virus. 5. Disinfect items and surfaces. It’s important to remember that such basic hygiene makes sense at all times, not just for H1N1 prevention. The spread of germs is most common through hand to mouth contact, so clean hands are essential, especially before eating. Remember too that some perspective is necessary. The H1N1 virus, while a serious ill- ness, is responsible for a death rate of one or two people per million in Ontario, according to Dr. Arlene King, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health. The odds of contracting it, especially if you take proper care, are literally, one in a million. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 10, 20096 P WE THINK... email responses to newsroom@durhamregion.com Payments stopped on upgrades AJAX -- Though the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) has stopped payments on upgrades to Slots at Ajax Downs, OLG officials say it won’t affect the project. At issue are a series of sur- charges levied by general con- tractor Govan Brown on the many subcontractors it has hired to expand casino and slot machine properties in Brantford and Ajax. The five individual surcharges total 7.5 per cent of each sub- contractor’s contract, and could add up to about $2 million. Allison Sparkes, director of communications for OLG, said via e-mail on Friday that senior management was told of the possibility of the surcharges in late July. The company then began a business review and an internal audit of the matter. “OLG advised the vendor that no payments will be processed until a thorough and compre- hensive review of all the paper- work has been completed and a conclusion reached.” The Ajax casino is slated to receive 544 new slot machines for a total of 800, requiring an expanded gaming floor. “There has been no impact on the building project in Ajax,” said Ms. Sparkes. Construction in Ajax is to be complete in the spring of 2010. On Aug. 25, Govan Brown offi- cial Jon Taylor wrote to OLG apologizing, promising to drop the surcharges. --With files from Torstar news services newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 10, 20097 AP Investors Group Financial Services Inc. Ashby. It all starts between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 12 at the Notre Dame high school’s north parking lot. The motorcyclists will head to cottage country on a scenic 150 kilometre ride up to Buckhorn where they’ll have lunch, which is included in their registration. When the riders return to Dur- ham, Coun. Ashby says the Harley- Davidson dealership in Oshawa has offered to give the group a behind-the-scenes tour. Proceeds from last year’s ride helped two families in need in the community. As well, funds went towards $2,000 scholarships for two local students heading to the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. “One is for one student at Notre Dame and the other is for a student at J. Clarke,” said Coun. Ashby. The Ward 2 councillor has been riding for about three and a half to four years and he said he wanted to incorporate something he enjoys with a service to the community. “Councillors and mayors around the GTA, a lot of them have their golf tournaments and so on, and I thought I’d do something differ- ent,” said Coun. Ashby. Last year about 15 people partic- ipated in the ride and he said he’s hoping to double that this year. He says a motorcycle rally is a good way to bring friends and neighbours together to make a dif- ference for Ajax’s youth. “I think it’s nice to go for a ride with a purpose,” said Coun. Ashby. The registration fee is $20 per rider, but riders who raise $100 in pledges ride free. He hopes fellow riders will join him in raising money for scholarships for local youth. The 2009 3M Health Care Qual- ity Team award was presented to the facility’s Metabolic and Weight Management Clinic staff members last week by the Cana- dian College of Health Service Executives. “When I first met the (Ontario Shores) clinic team, what really struck me was a very passionate and very enthusiastic team,” said Tim Brown, director of 3M Health Care, after presenting members with certificates of excellence on Sept. 1. The Canadian College of Health Service Executives is a nation- al, non-profit, association dedi- cated to developing, promoting, advancing and recognizing excel- lence in health leadership. Only 30 Health Care Qual- ity awards have been handed out across Canada to date and Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences (formerly known as the Whitby Mental Health Cen- tre) is the first mental health facil- ity to receive it. Teamwork is a clear priority for Ontario Shores through the dedi- cation of the clinic’s work in iden- tifying a problem, creating a solu- tion and providing patients with overall health care, said the hos- pital’s president and CEO, Glenna Raymond. “Receiving this award illustrates how the Metabolic and Weight Management Clinic embraces quality, innovation and team- work through the exemplary care it provides our patients, and is reflective of our core values of excellence, innovation, safety, respect and community.” Receiving this award illustrates how the Metabolic and Weight Management Clinic embraces quality, innovation and teamwork through the exemplary care it provides our patients, and is reflective of our core values of excellence, innovation, safety, respect and community. The dog, a blonde chow that was discovered in “grave con- dition” from apparent neglect after wandering into a resi- dent’s backyard in Courtice last month, has been placed with a foster family. “It’s a dog that’s gone through so much,” said animal cruelty investigator Debby Houghton while shelter staff were over- whelmed with requests from the public to adopt Phoenix. Though the dog has been diag- nosed with advanced tongue cancer that’s not operable and only has a short time to live, staff wanted to ensure his tragic life would have a loving end. “The cancer’s going to catch up and the dog will probably no longer want to eat,” Ms. Hough- ton said when explaining that any family willing to take Phoe- nix in would have to be pre- pared to handle a dog with a terminal illness. The dog went home to his new family on Wednesday morning and will remain there for his last days. A $5,300 reward is being offered for any details related to the case. The meet is a yearly event featuring swim- mers from California, Canada and Mexico. Fedak proved to be one of Team Canada’s top performers with top five finishes in his indi- vidual events and gold medals in every relay event that he participated in. In his individual events, Fedak won a gold medal in the 15-16 boys 50-metre freestyle in a time of 23.78, smashing the existing meet record by .3 of a second. Fedak went on to win a silver medal in the 100-metre butterfly in a time of 55.76, the second-fastest time posted by any 16-year-old male in Canada so far this season. He also placed 5th in both the 100- and 200-metre freestyle events. Fedak led off the gold-medal winning 4x200m freestyle relay, in the process breaking his club record set at Age Group Champion- ships just two weeks earlier. He also anchored the 4x100m freestyle relay, helping the team to another gold in the process. Then, Fedak wrapped up the meet with perhaps his most impressive swim, the fly leg of the 4x100m medley relay in a stunning time of 54.62. The team won another gold and also broke the existing meet record set at last year’s meet by Team Canada. Team Canada won the meet in impressive fashion, bringing home gold medals in seven of eight events on the final day of the competi- tion. SUBMITTED PHOTO LOS ANGELES -- Zach Fedak, a Courtice resident who swims with the Ajax Swim Club, returned home from the North American Challenge Cup in Los Angeles with four gold medals and a silver. SWIMMING Beckberger earns silver at Nationals Ajax resident back to Arizona State for final year AJAX -- Jenn Beckberger has headed back for her final year at Arizona State University fresh off a fine summer in the swimming pool. Beckberger, a 23-year-old Ajax resident and member of the Whitby Dolphins Swim Club, com- peted at the Canadian 2009 World Championship Trials, where she won a silver medal in the 50m butterfly and placed fourth in the 50m free, fifth in the 100m free and 50m breaststroke and sixth in the 200m free. Her performance earned her a place on the Cana- dian National 2009 Senior B Tour Team. The Senior B team headed first to London, England for the Tri- Nations Cup at the end of July, where they competed against Britain and Russia. The Canadi- an team performed well, winning the long course meet. Beckberger was on the 400 free and 800 free relay teams, which both placed first. She also swam the individ- ual 100m freestyle, winning the race by a full second and breaking the 55-second barrier. Her time of 54.95 seconds places her in the top 50 in the world. Both the Senior Championship team and the Senior B team com- peted at the British Grand Prix in Leeds in August, a short course meet. Beckberger reached the finals in the 50m free, 100m free, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m butterfly and the 100m IM. She was also member of the wom- en’s 4x100m freestyle relay team that won the gold medal and set a Canadian record of 3:32.53, beat- ing the old record by five seconds. Diedrick, Smith to travel with Canada’s Junior National baseball team to Florida OTTAWA -- The roster for Canada’s Junior National team that will compete in the Fall Instructional League at Dis- ney’s Wide World of Sports Complex next month has been announced and a few locals made the grade. Of the 37 players invited by Base- ball Canada, four hail from these parts in Whitby’s Evan Grills, Ajax’s Philip Diedrick, Pickering’s Brian Smith and Uxbridge’s Chris Robinson. The four will provide Canada with help all over the diamond, as Grills, a 6-foot-5 left hander, who was a member of Canada’s Junior National program at the World Junior Championship in 2008, will take the mound, as will Smith, a fel- low lefty. Meanwhile, Robinson will see time behind the plate and Diedrick will play the outfield. The junior team will play nine exhi- bition games, most featuring instruction- al teams from Major League Baseball’s Atlanta Braves, Houston Astros, Pitts- burgh Pirates and Washington Nation- als along with games against Semi- nole Community College, Lake Sumter Community College and an intrasquad game. “This camp will allow our coach- ing staff the opportunity to evaluate all players in a highly competitive environ- ment,” says Team Canada manager Greg Hamilton. “The strides taken at this camp will better prepare our team for success internationally at future competitions.” Canada’s roster is well represented from coast-to-coast with 12 players from Ontario, 11 from British Columbia, eight from Quebec and three from Alberta, while Manitoba, New Brunswick and Saskatchewan each have one at camp. In addition, the coaching staff also has a couple interesting names with former Major Leaguers Rob Butler of Whitby serving as a guest coach and Paul Quantrill, of nearby Port Hope, on staff as the pitching coach. The event runs Oct. 5-15 and is part of the process toward establishing a club for the 2010 World Junior Cham- pionship in Thunder Bay. Players at the camp will also have the opportunity to show their stuff to those in the college and professional ranks as several scouts will be taking in the event. Diedrick and Smith won a bronze medal this summer with Team Ontario at the Baseball Canada Cup in Kinders- ley, Saskatchewan. Ontario beat Alber- ta 8-5 in the bronze medal game after losing to Quebec in the semifinals. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • September 10, 200914 AP Admissio n is FREE The Regional Municipality of Durham Headquarters 605 Rossland Road East, Whitby For more information contact: Durham Health Connection Line 905-666-6241 or 1-800-841-2729 or visit for www.durham.ca event schedule Dads-to-be and support people welcome!
