Pickering girl helps kids with cancer
Less than $300 away
from her goal
BY KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Renee Faux was so moved
by a television ad about kids suffering
from cancer that she decided to help.
The nine-year-old Pickering girl, who
has lost her grandfather to cancer, decid-
ed when she was six she wanted to do
something to help kids with the dis-
ease. So she began collecting change in a
Freezee box she had turned into a collec-
tion bin. She also collected bottles and
had a lemonade stand to add to the pot.
At age seven, she donated her hair to
Locks of Love.
But she was sold on the Pediatric
Oncology Group of Ontario when she
saw now-deceased musician Jeff Healey
in the commercial for the organization.
“I said, ‘Mommy, I want to do this for
kids,’” Renee said from the family kitch-
en table, with her money collection neat-
ly counted in front of her, along with a
binder containing the documentation to RON PIETRONIRO / METROLAND
PICKERING -- Renee Faux held a garage sale recently for the Pediatric Oncology
Group of Ontario and raised $706 from the sale and other fundraising efforts. See PICKERING page 5

Girl found outside
Courtice Secondary
School
BY JENNIFER STONE
jstone@durhamregion.com
PETERBOROUGH -- Durham police offi-
cer Robbie Harding had just returned
to where he had begun a high-speed
pursuit of a van registered to Stanley
Tippett last August when a young girl
stumbled out of the dark, naked from
the waist down, her shirt torn down the
middle.
“She was wet, dirty,” Constable Hard-
ing said as he took the stand during the
third day of Mr. Tippett’s trial on charg-
es of kidnapping and sexually assault-
ing a 12-year-old Peterborough girl last
August.
Const. Harding was working on a
report at the Bowmanville police sta-
tion last Aug. 6 when he was dispatched
at 2:21 a.m. to a “disturbance -- screams
and crying from a female” near Courtice
Secondary School, he testified Wednes-
day.
“The nature of the call, the word cry-
ing, really picked up a seriousness for
my response, so I travelled at a high
rate of speed,” arriving at the Nash Road
school at 2:25 a.m., he said.
He pulled in at the high school and
saw a man walk out of the woods and
get into a red van. A chase ensued down
Nash Road, with Const. Harding pulling
up alongside the van a couple of times
and getting a look at the driver, before
being called off the chase, for public
safety reasons, around Varcoe and Nash
roads.
In between, he had been advised the
van belonged to Mr. Tippett, a Peter-
borough resident who Const. Harding
said he was told “was known to coerce
young girls.”
Off the chase, Const. Harding returned
to the high school. He called in the Dur-
ham K-9 unit and was briefing the K-9
officer when he saw the girl come out
from the shadows. The girl was “hold-
ing on to the fence, staggering forward
... semi-crouched,” he said.
Const. Harding accompanied the girl
to the hospital.
Also taking the stand was Felicia Neals,
Mr. Tippett’s then-mistress. She told
court Peterborough police had tried to
warn her off Mr. Tippett, even before his
most recent arrest last August.
Police caught up with Ms. Neals at the
Four Counties Brain Injury Clinic, “tell-
ing me stuff about Stanley and asking if
I really knew him.”
Ms. Neals had earlier testified she
believed Mr. Tippett was separated from
his wife when she took up with him.
When she broached the subject with
her boyfriend, he maintained police
were wrong, that he was indeed sepa-
rated from his wife.
Mr. Tippett is married to a woman
named Natalie, with whom he has
five children. Ms. Neals was reported-
ly pregnant with Mr. Tippett’s baby at
the time of the arrest, but subsequently
miscarried.
Ms. Neals testified she told police
she would carry on her relationship
with Mr. Tippett. The police officer she
spoke to “said be careful, because (Mr.
Tippett) was dangerous.”
During Ms. Neals’s testimony, Mr. Tip-
pett’s lawyer, Mike McLachlan, began
an application to have Ms. Neals’s diary
brought into evidence. But the appli-
cation was called off at Mr. Tippett’s
request.
The trial continues in Peterborough
court under Justice Bruce Glass.

Undercover police probe
leads to arrest of 12
BY JEFF MITCHELL
jmitchell@durhamregion.com
COURTICE -- They lived the high life, rolling
to casinos and bars in high-end vehicles and
wearing watches worth thousands of dollars.
But the trappings of a group of 12 alleged
drug dealers -- including cars, SUVs, houses
and a condominium -- are now in posses-
sion of Durham Regional Police after a three-
month investigation resulted in the seizure
of more than $3 million worth of dope, cash,
guns and property.
Project Isis “started at the grass roots within
our region and quickly expanded to the city
of Toronto,” Detective-Sergeant Mario Les-
sard said Wednesday morning.
Durham cops held a news conference at
the police property bureau in south Courtice
to display the drugs and guns, cash and vehi-
cles seized as proceeds of crime.
Detective Cyril Gillis, supervisor of Dur-
ham’s Drug Enforcement Unit, said the inves-
tigation began with a focus on low-level deal-
ers and rapidly led to the identification of a
“cell” that peddled marijuana, cocaine, hero-
in, ecstasy and methamphetamine.
“Our initial investigation started with a tar-
get (suspect) in Whitby,” he said. “An under-
cover operator infiltrated this operation from
that level and we just followed the food chain
... from there we followed the money, fol-
lowed the drugs and we found Mr. Big.”
Just who “Mr. Big” is cops aren’t saying. But
he’s one of the three Toronto residents busted
at the conclusion of Isis, Det. Gillis said. Other
suspects were rounded up in Markham, Rich-
mond Hill, Whitby and Oshawa.
Det. Gillis said the accused appear to have
lived on the proceeds of crime, eschew-
ing day jobs and hanging out in casinos and
night clubs. “These guys were living the high
life,” he said.
Wednesday police had on display 10 vehi-
cles, including a Chevy Suburban as well as
Hondas, BMWs and Mercedes-Benzes. Pack-
ages of drugs were piled on tables alongside
bags and bundles of cash. To one side sat an
Audemars Piguet wristwatch Det. Gillis said
was valued at $48,000.
Recently passed legislation allows prosecu-
tors to seek court-ordered forfeiture of prop-
erty deemed to be proceeds of crime, Det.-
Sgt. Lessard said. In addition to the property
on display Wednesday, the Crown will seek
to seize residences in Whitby, Markham and
Toronto linked to the alleged dealers.

Offers of help pour in
for ‘one of the worst cases’
Durham Humane Society

BY PARVANEH PESSIAN
ppessian@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- Donations and adoption requests are
pouring in for Phoenix, an appallingly neglected
dog discovered in Courtice, but Durham Humane
Society staff say they are focusing on saving its life
first.
The male chow was immediately taken under the
care of the agency after wandering into a resident’s
yard in the area of Rundle Road and Bloor Street on
Sunday night.
“Right now we’re just letting people know that
because his condition is so severe, we’re not sure
if he’s going to pull through yet,” shelter manag-
er Ruby Richards said, adding that a multitude of
medical tests are underway to determine whether
the dog requires specialized treatment.
Phoenix, as he’s been named by animal cruelty
investigator Debby Houghton, had filthy, matted fur
with pus and blood oozing from his face. His nails
were also extremely overgrown and his entire body
likely riddled with infection.
“Phoenix’s condition hasn’t become worse but he
hasn’t improved all that much either -- he is eating,
which is a good sign and he’s been given something
for the pain,” said Ms. Houghton, who, in nearly 20
years in the business, called this one of the most
disturbing cases of animal neglect she’s ever dealt
with.
“I’ve seen a lot, unfortunately, but this is what
happens when you deal with animal cruelty and
we’re hopeful that we will find who did this.”
A $1,500 reward is being offered for any details
leading to the conviction of the dog’s owner with
staff working on increasing that amount over the
next few days.
Phoenix may have to be transferred to the Univer-
sity of Guelph if specialized care is needed but at
this point, there’s still no guarantee he will make it,
said Ms. Richards.
“We will do whatever it takes to try and save him
but we’re also realists that we can’t save every dog,”
she said.
“He’s one of the worst cases any of us have come
across so right now, we’re just keeping our fingers
crossed.”

Pro-life demonstrator
explains why
he holds up signs
To the editor:
The basic premise for showing graphic pic-
tures of aborted human beings to the public
rests in the potential for deterring adults and
adolescents from such acts. Circumstances
in Canada warrant taking drastic action with
what Show the Truth demonstrators believe
is in accord with divine charity. This is akin
to tough love that parents need to sometimes
have for their children.
The Supreme Court ruling in 1988 struck
down the abortion law prevailing at the time
since 1969. In the ruling, “all seven justices
explicitly recognized the legitimate inter-
est of the state in protecting the life of the
fetus/unborn child.” Prime Minister Stephen
Harper and his predecessors have refused
to open up the debate on abortion in Parlia-
ment. Apathy allows the procrastination in
correcting the political/legal stalemate in our
nation to continue at the cost of human lives.
The circumvention of the rule of law from
legal precedent results in abortions being
procured today even for instances where it
is used as a contraceptive measure. Surely
this won’t be corrected unless more Canadi-
ans realize that the status quo on abortion is
no longer acceptable. It is a valid point that
parental rights are being compromised by
the method used for the demonstrations.
However, it pales in comparison to the
annihilation of children in their mothers’
wombs and their right to life that is being
denied. Human beings need to develop a
sympathetic heart towards those who are
disadvantaged in our society. Show the Truth
demonstrations attempt to instil compassion
for the plight of the unborn in Canada.
In a loving way, parents can foster this as
a positive character trait in their children
with an honest, age-appropriate explana-
tion about abortion. Reactions of anger,
which are projected onto children by parents
who object to the demonstrations, are what
should be curtailed.
Vito Norejko

Unrestricted abortion
must end in Canada
To the editor:
In a recent report by Banerjeee/Robson of
the C.D. Howe Institute regarding immigra-
tion’s impact on Canada’s demographic and
economic future, the authors stated that in
order to keep the present ratio of workers to
retired persons, the projected national pop-
ulation in 2058 would have to increase to
210 million, an impossible task considering
we now have only 225,000 immigrants each
year. It appears the reason we have become
so dependent on immigration is because our
fertility rate has dropped from 2.1 to 1.54.
With 3 million abortions performed since
abortion was made legal in 1969, we will con-
tinue to suffer population decline until we
reduce our present abortion rate of nearly
30 Canadian babies for every 100 who are
born alive. Show the Truth Tour was at major
arteries in Durham Region last week showing
pictures of aborted babies. If we care about
the society we want to have in the future, we
would be wise to reassess our stance.

Biobags are best

To the editor:
I wish to add to your published list of
‘approved’ compost bags that you may have
missed. BioBags are an item I insist on pur-
chasing for our household due to its supe-
rior packaging, bag dispensing and product
presentation techniques. I’ve seen and expe-
rienced the others. They could use some
improvements, believe me. I do not enjoy
pulling five or more bags at a time out of a
box I need to rip open or need a knife to do
so and having to push the excess back in the
box.

Greenspace and growth can live together in Durham
When it comes to long-range plans for
Durham Region, there will always be a
conflict between those who wish to con-
serve green space and others who want
to build up the area.
Since the Greenbelt was established
under the Province’s Places to Grow Act
in 2005, hard and fast rules have been
established about where municipalities
can build and where they can’t.
The Greenbelt has laid out a 1.8 mil-
lion-acre stretch of land around the
Golden Horseshoe from Niagara to Dur-
ham.
And Growing Durham is the Region’s
plan for development over the next 20
years.
That plan, sent to the Province for
approval in June, has come under fire
from a number of environmental groups
who claim the plan encroaches on Green-
belt lands.
They argue Greenbelt space should not
be encroached upon by development
and they have a supporter in Ajax Mayor
Steve Parish.
Mayor Parish wrote a letter to the
Province about Durham’s position and
received a response from two deputy
ministers who said, “Durham’s plan does
not adhere to the provincial guidelines.”
Before the Province puts its collec-
tive foot down too swiftly on the Dur-
ham plan, it should pause to reconsider.
Durham is the most rural of the five GTA
regions, with more greenspace and agri-
cultural land than any other.
It is the only region that is being called
on to have a ratio of three jobs to every
resident while the Province sees fit to
have a ratio of two jobs to every resident
in the other four GTA regions.
Mayor John Gray, who is chairman of
the Region’s planning committee and
who is backing Growing Durham, says
intensification in Durham has to take
place in Durham’s downtowns and along
major transportation routes. And, he
points out, when the Region is fully built
out, it will still be 84 per cent greenspace.
The key element for the next 50 years in
Durham is finding the perfect balance
between being responsible environmen-
tally and developing jobs and growth so
that the region is not just a commuting
zone for Toronto.
Those jobs and industries are needed
to shore up the tax and revenue base for
municipalities in Durham.
Employment lands are needed in each
city, town, municipality and township to
make that a reality. And that can be done
while ensuring Durham continues to be
the garden of the GTA.

Just as you protect your child’s eyes dur-
ing the bright days of summer, autumn is not
the time to put the sunglasses away.
“Children need the protection of good
quality sunglasses just as much as adults
do and sometimes even more,” says Bijan
Minbashion, vice president of operations
for Hakim Optical, a national leader in re-
tail eye care. “So many of their activities are
outdoors and in direct sunlight.”
And the good news is: it isn’t too diffi cult
to persuade kids to wear sunglasses, espe-
cially if they are modeled after those worn
by adult role models or an older sibling.
Best Choice
When choosing either prescription or
non-prescription sunglasses, here are the top
quality features to include for best protec-
tion and value, according to Hakim Optical:
• Lenses that reduce glare or light inten-
sity.
• Lenses with the highest protection against
harmful utraviolet (UV) rays.
• Optical quality/distortion free lenses.
• Lenses that sharpen images by elimi-
nating colour aberration. The choices range
from Constant or Changeable Colour Densi-
ty lenses (photochromic) in glass or plastic,
to High Contrast Tinted lenses or even Po-
larized Sunglass Lenses to aid in reducing
glare from refl ective surfaces.
• Non-glare coatings enhance the func-
tionality of your sunglasses.

Back-To-School Tips: Protect your child’s eyes from harsh sunlight
Be Kind To Your Eyes Tips for
minimizing computer vision syndrome
Computer vision syndrome or CVS is a condition
described by the Canadian Association of Optom-
etrists as various eye and vision symptoms associated
with prolonged exposure to digital screens, including
computers, television, Blackberries, and cell phones.
Symptoms of computer vision syndrome can include
eye strain and fatigue, blurred, irritated and dry eyes,
double vision and headaches. The majority of Cana-
dians may not even realize they have this condition.
With the evolution of technology, more and more
Canadians are spending time on digital screens, a
signifi cant increase from fi ve years ago. While it’s
diffi cult to avoid the modern day conveniences these
technological devices provide, it’s important to mini-
mize any strain to your eyes.
Consider these suggestions and give your eyes the
break they need.
Follow the 20-20-20 Rule
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recom-
mends for every 20 minutes of screen time, take a 20
second break to blink and focus your eyes on some-
thing 20 feet away. This will give your eyes a much-
needed break and reduce some of the symptoms men-
tioned earlier.
Screen Smarts
Take a few seconds to adjust the brightness and con-
trast of your digital screen. The brightness and con-
trast should be set at comfortable intensity so that the
letters are easily read.
Lighting can make all the difference
Room lighting should be diffused to reduce glare
and refl ections from your screen. Diffused light-
ing will help minimize screen glares that may cause
squinting and eye strain.
Press “OFF”
If you experience any CVS symptoms, turn off your
digital screen and visit your optometrist for a com-
prehensive eye exam. Ask your optometrist if your
glasses are up to date and describe any symptoms you
may be experiencing. Your eyes will thank you.
For more information on computer vision syndrome,
and to fi nd an optometrist, please visit www.opto.ca.

GERMANY -- Pickering’s Perdita Felicien looks on with disappoint-
ment after finishing eighth in the 100m hurdles at the World Track
and Field Championships in Berlin. Durham’s other entry, Whitby’s
Priscilla Lopes-Schliep, won the silver medal.
TRACK AND FIELD
Frustration for Perdita
BY BRAD KELLY
bkelly@durhamregion.com
BERLIN, GERMANY -- Priscilla
Lopes-Schliep is getting used to
doing a little celebration after big
races.
She did one after winning bronze
at the Olympic Games in Beijing,
China last year, and on Wednesday
night in Berlin, Germany, she got to
do another at the World Track and
Field Championships.
Breaking from the starting gate
quickly, the 26-year-old from
Whitby won the silver medal in the
100m hurdles in a time of 12.54, just
off the gold medal winning time of
12.51 by Jamaica’s Brigitte Foster-
Hylton.
For Durham’s other entrant in
the final, Pickering’s Perdita Fel-
icien, she finished a disappointing
eighth.
Lopes-Schliep was still basking in
the glory a couple of hours after the
race, describing the moments after
crossing the finish line.
“I knew I was in the top three, but
I didn’t know what the place was,”
she said via a conference call.
“I knew Brigitte was in front of me
and I told her she won and she said
she didn’t even know because she
ran to the finish line with her eyes
closed.
“When she saw her name and my
name pop up, we did a little cel-
ebration like last year at the Olym-
pics. I think that’s my signature
mark now.”
Lopes-Schliep’s second place fin-
ish was sandwiched between two
Jamaican’s, as Delloreen Ennis-
London was third.
Just 10 minutes prior to the race,
Lopes-Schliep was taken to doping
control for drug testing after being
randomly selected following the
semifinals. She noted the unusual
episode was a distraction, but she
overcame it.
For Felicien, 28, the ghost of a past
race came back to haunt her on this
day. She looked awkward over the
first hurdle, knocked down the sec-
ond, and was left far behind the rest
of the field by the midpoint.
It was back in 2004 at the Olym-
pic Games in Athens when Fel-
icien crashed and fell in the final.
She entered the race as one of the
medal favourites, having won the
World Championship title in 2003.
This time around, Felicien looked
sharp, running a 12.77 in Tuesday’s
heats, and besting that with a 12.58
in Wednesday afternoon’s semi.
ATHLETICS
Anne Ottenbrite
wants athletes
to be self aware
Pickering Swim Club
coach teaching
program at UOIT
BY BRAD KELLY
bkelly@durhamregion.com
PORT PERRY -- The more athletes
know about themselves, the better
off they will be in the long run.
That’s a philosophy Anne Otten-
brite is hoping to instil in young
athletes looking to take the next
step in their athletic career. She will
be running an eight-session pro-
gram at UOIT in Oshawa begin-
ning Sept. 28, designed for ath-
letes 12 and over. At the comple-
tion, the athlete will become more
self aware, which will increase the
opportunity to attain a higher level
of success.
“In this day and age, I find a lot of
people are becoming less and less
self aware. We want a quick fix. We
want things to be great,” says the
Port Perry resident, who is a coach
with the Pickering Swim Club.
She points to the high cost of
purchasing one of the new hi-tech
polyurethane swimming bodysuits
that caused a number of records to
fall at the recent World Champion-
ships as an example of the quick-
fix mentality. Money spent on the
swimsuit could be better spent on
improving technique, she says.
“Instead of quick fixes and push-
button-type athletes, we need to
become aware athletes.”
The five-step program begins by
helping athletes correctly log their
training and competition sched-
ules to identify pattern behaviours
and how to react, change or make
adjustments to them. Once accom-
plished, the program is round-
ed out with goal setting as well as
visualization and relaxation tech-
niques.
“It’s pointless to set goals when
they aren’t aware athletes,” she
says of the process. “They will just
duplicate the behaviours again and
again. The goal setting needs to be
a later process.”
Following a similar type of
thought process helped Otten-
brite during her stellar career in the
pool, culminating with her gold, sil-
ver and bronze medal performance
25 years ago at the 1984 Olympic
Games in Los Angeles.
“I was always very aware and did
my own logging and had a five-year
plan in place which I did on my
own,” she recalls. “I’ve always been
incredibly fascinated with it.
“Years ago, it was frowned upon
to think that you needed mental
skills work and that you were men-
tally weak.”
The eight sessions at UOIT will be
held once a week for one hour, with
a maximum classroom setting of 20
athletes. The skills obtained can-
not only be applied to athletics, but
also to school and beyond.
“Ideally they will become a self-
aware athlete and take ownership
in their improvements,” says Otten-
brite. “A self-aware athlete will
learn how to motivate themselves
and understand how to maintain
their own motivation, which to me
is really key.”

Ajax-Pickering
wins third straight
SCOFL title
HAMILTON -- At Ivor Wynne
Stadium in Hamilton, the Ajax-
Pickering Dolphins Junior Varsity
SCOFL team won its third straight
AA Division championship by
beating the Niagara Storm 14-7.
Once again, the outcome of the
game was in doubt until the very
end.
The Dolphins led off the scor-
ing with a short touchdown run
by running back Jordan Urquhart,
the game’s offensive MVP. How-
ever, the Storm evened the score
by halftime. The second half con-
tinued to be a defensive battle
with neither team scoring during
the third quarter.
With a little less than seven min-
utes left, the Storm drove for what
appeared to be the go-ahead
score only to be stopped by the
determined Dolphin defence.
With a little more than five min-
utes left in the game, the Dolphins
started with the ball on their own
20-yard line and drove the ball
down the length of the field led
by quarterback Curtis Inniss and
running back/fullback combina-
tions of Urquhart, Brad MacMil-
lan, Joe Tuccitto, Nathaniel Vai-
kla, Sean Seecharan and Tyshon
Holness. The long 85-yard drive
was completed when Seecharan
scored a touchdown on a three-
yard run, leaving only 1:32 left on
the clock. Drew Rider connect-
ed on his second convert of the
game to give the Dolphins the 14-
7 lead.
The Storm once again had the
ball and was determined to tie the
game until a throw from the quar-
terback was intercepted by safety
Randall Inniss, who was named
the game’s defensive MVP.
The Dolphins rode their play-
off motto, Dedicate, Dominate,
Celebrate, the game plan devised
by co-head coaches Rawle Elliott
and Rob Colvin, and the great
energy, support and noise from
their faithful fans who travelled to
Hamilton to cheer the team on, to
a hard-fought team win.newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 20, 200919
