BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Tropix Nightclub has removed a big item from its menu for the time being: alcohol. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario suspended the restaurant and bar’s licence following a fight on its patio last week, said AGCO spokeswoman Lisa Murray. Besides the interim suspension, which stipu- lates Tropix cannot sell or serve alcohol until later instructed, it was also given a notice of proposal to revoke the liquor licence. Police said a fight with broken beer bottles broke out at around 1:30 a.m. last Friday, Aug. 7, which was followed by several gunshots, according to witnesses. Police were called to the Liverpool Road bar, near Hwy. 401 and, after a search, located and arrested three men. One man suffered a gash to the head, but there were no serious injuries reported, police said. It hasn’t been reported whether a gun was ever found. Ms. Murray said police asked a represen- tative of the club if security had intervened, to which the rep said it did. However, upon review of the security tape, that was not the case, she said. “Basically, the AGCO had reason to believe that it was not in the public interest to allow the establishment to continue to be licensed because it could not ensure that patrons would be safe on the premises, or at least that it would do the maximum it could do to ensure the patrons are safe,” she said. Tropix general manager, Teena Dyer, was there that night, but said she was there as a patron, not an employee. She was on the patio when the fight broke out and said there were three or four security guards present, along with an owner. They did intervene and escorted out those involved in the fight, she said. She even watched the security tape and saw that was the case, she said. The owner did not return calls to the News Advertiser. Inground & above ground Toys on Sale Average price of single-detached homes increases in 2009 BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Despite a study showing decreasing values of single-detached homes throughout most of the 65 Toron- to Real Estate Board districts, Pickering’s have surged. “I think Pickering is desirable because of its close proximity to Toronto, and there’s a lot to offer here,” said Ward 2 Regional Councillor and RE/MAX sales representative Bill McLean. The recent RE/MAX ‘Return on Invest- ment Report’ found the average price of a single-detached home in Pickering climbed 3.72 per cent to $389,536 in the first six months of 2009 from $375,577 a year ago. Pickering placed second, behind the Beach area in Toronto, which saw a 3.79 per cent increase. Of the areas surveyed, only 11 (17 per cent) reported an upswing in the value of single-detached homes, the report said, which included the Pickering area of E13 (from Hwy. 401 to the south, Taunton Road to the north, Scarbor- ough-Pickering Townline Road to the west and the Ajax-Pickering border to the east). “It’s a great place,” said Christine Mar- tysiewicz, RE/MAX Ontario-Atlantic Canada spokeswoman. “It’s affordable. You get a lot of house for your dollar.” Although Pickering saw an increase in value, it’s still far behind Toronto prices. The average single home in the Beach is $715,422. Pickering’s been ideal for first-time home buyers, she said. The most popular homes are two-sto- rey, Ms. Martysiewicz said. They sit on the market for an average of 36 days, which is only a week longer than last year’s average, when the economic fore- cast was stormy. The number of units sold is down only five per cent from last year. Coun. McLean says Pickering’s close proximity to Toronto has drawn a lot of buyers. If someone’s considering a less expensive home in Bowmanville or Courtice, they may factor in travel if they have to commute to Toronto. “The money you may save on a house there you may spend on wear and tear on the road,” he said. Besides, a number of jobs and busi- nesses have been popping up in Pickering, he said. Also, many are drawn to Pickering’s older subdivisions that have larger, mature lots. Since there aren’t many new homes going up, resales have been popular. He suggested buyers could be spend- ing their money before the tax harmoni- zation takes place, which will take effect next July. “Buy now, save yourself eight per cent across the board on a lot of the costs,” he said. Coun. McLean sees the prices of new homes continuing to climb large- ly because much of the lumber supply has been lost to recent British Columbia fires. Rouge Valley Health System’s Ajax-Pickering site lost $2 million BY JASMEET SIDHU newsroom@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- A second man has been arrested in connection to the money- laundering scheme that saw Rouge Val- ley Health System in Ajax-Pickering lose millions during the span of eight years. Uwe Marshner, 60, of Pickering, was arrested Monday in Durham Region and charged with fraud over $5,000 and laundering the proceeds of crime. In late June, Toronto police arrested 64-year-old Ryerson professor Sheldon Reinsilber. A warrant for Mr. Marshner was issued at the same time. Two suspects are accused of running an eight-year false-invoice scheme from April 1, 1999, to Feb. 28, 2007, that alleg- edly involved more than $2 million taken from the Rouge Valley Health System. Police began the investigation in Sep- tember 2007 after an internal investi- gation by the Rouge Valley Health Sys- tem discovered the false invoices for services not ren- dered, said Det. Const. Niki Laxama- na. “The stolen money was from annu- al operating dol- lars provided by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Due to the action of two (suspects), children, adolescent and adult mental health patients did not receive all the care they were entitled to,” Det. Const. Laxamana said. If convicted, both men could face up to 10 years in jail. Mr. Reinsilber made a court appear- ance at College Park on Aug. 6. Mr. Marshner is expected to appear in court Sept. 22. Because the matter is before the courts RVHS spokesman Dave Brazeau couldn’t comment, but said the monetary loss was covered by insurance. “The hospital does have insurance cov- erage for this,” he said. -- With files by Kristen Calis Jasmeet Sidhu is a reporter with the Toronto Star CRIME Pickering man arrested in hospital fraud UWE MARSHNER Due to the action of two (suspects), children, adolescent and adult mental health patients did not receive all the care they were entitled to. I started to smoke at the age of 15 in high school just to fit in with the rest of the stu- dent who smoke. I think if schools didn’t provide smoking areas far fewer teenagers would become addicted and live longer and healthier lives. I was finally able to quit 27 years later at the cost of one massive stroke and I believe it was smoking that took my mom’s life. Now that I have quit smoking, my health is improving slowly. Dave Keeble Whitby VIEWPOINT Cancer society deserves better coverage To the editor: Re: Oshawa woman cries foul over cancer society policy, Aug. 6. This article upset me greatly. The Durham Region branch of the Canadian Cancer Society is run by a small, hardworking and dedicated group of paid staff and a huge army of wonder- ful volunteers. These people spend countless hours driving patients, providing peer coun- selling, supporting newly diagnosed patients, fundraising and performing office work. The list goes on. Your paper has ignored the dedication of these people. More importantly you chose to ignore the fact that these volunteers raise more funds for Durham Region than any other group in Ontario. I write this as a private individual who is a cancer survivor who can personally attest to the good work that our local unit does each and every day. I also volunteer there and know that each fundraising dollar is spent in the wisest of fashions. You, at the very least, owe this organi- zation a positive story if you are going to place such a huge emphasis on a nega- tive one. Georgina Dunstan Ajax WARNING Take care to avoid geese on Hwy. 2 near Salem Road To the editor: Along Hwy. 2, just east of Salem Road, there is a beautiful new man-made pond/ parkette. It attracts wildlife, including numerous Canadian Geese. Unfortunately, the builders have not surrounded the area with a fence and the geese are wandering onto the highway and getting killed. I know this firsthand as I had no option but to run a young goose over, it was either that or cause a car accident as I had nowhere to go. I am an animal lover and I go out of my way to help our wild- life. Killing this goose is something I will never forget. There are many areas in Ajax that attract geese and I have never seen any dead on the road until this pond was construct- ed. There is surely some bylaw that requires it to be fenced in, not unlike swimming pools. Even a divider between the pond and road would help. I hope the builder reads this letter and takes appropriate action and I hope your readers read this and take caution if they drive by it. Use proper compost bags to do your part for the environment If you want to be absolutely sure your compost is taken away from the curb when you leave it there for pickup, make sure you use certified compostable liner bags. That’s the firm message that has been delivered by waste technicians working with the Region of Durham. The reason is simple: plastic in non- certified compostable bags may not break down properly and doesn’t prop- erly decompose along with the com- post inside them. And, according to the Region, that’s not only bad for the envi- ronment and defeats the purpose of composting, but is also a problem for the contractor, Miller Waste. The company, which collects green bin material, has seen an increase in the use of plastic bags for compost and will now be leaving compost behind, tagged for frustrated homeowners to deal with. To avoid the problem, Region officials suggest looking for specific biodegrad- able compost bags that break down with- in 21 days of being used. “They’re made of corn starch,” said Steve Jedinak, a waste technician with the Region of Dur- ham. The brands that can be used in your green bin include the following: Al-Pack compost bags, Bag-To-Nature, Bio-Life compost bags, Biosak compost bags, Compost-A-Bag, ECOSAFE compost bags, GLAD compost bags, Great Value compost bags and Tuff Guy compost bags. With 10 brands to choose from, it shouldn’t be difficult to find one on the shelf of your neighbourhood supermar- ket or superstore. A symbol with the word ‘compostable’ should be clearly indicat- ed on the box you choose to use for your green bin liner. You can find out further information and get more clarification by calling 905-579-5264 or toll free at 1-800- 667-5671 or by e-mail at waste@durham. ca. You can also get further information by checking out the Region of Durham waste website at www.durhamregion- waste.ca. If you get stuck and are short a proper bag, you can always wrap up your com- post in newspaper, which will be collect- ed. It’s more important than ever that we all do our part to make sure that we com- post and recycle as much material as we possibly can. But it doesn’t do much good if the material we compost is not placed in the proper bag. So do your part and use the proper bags so that you’re not left frustrated, and so the environ- ment comes out ahead. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 14, 20096 P newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 14, 20097 AP JOIN US AT AJAX DOWNS FOR A SUNDAYS AT 10:30 A.M. Some bags are advertised as being bio- degradable or oxobiodegradable and may indicate they are acceptable for use in municipal programs. However, only liner bags with a certified compostable logo will be collected in Durham Region. “What’s sparking this is our contractor, Miller Waste, has seen an increase in plastic bags,” said Steve Jedinak, a waste manage- ment technician with the Region. The unacceptable bags have a chemical added to them to help break them down, but often, the bags haven’t fully decom- posed. The compost goes through a three-week cycle and “the proper bags break down in 21 days. They’re made of corn starch,” Mr. Jedinak stated. The plastic bags aren’t 100 per cent compostable and don’t have the appropriate logo, he added. The bags can be used in York Region and Toronto, he said. If people don’t have the proper bags or can’t afford them, they can wrap compost in newspaper, Mr. Jedinak said. Residents should only use proper liner bags, paper food waste bags or food waste wrapped in newspaper. Compostable bags completely break down and become part of the finished compost. “Some retailers are carrying the bags that say they are accept- able. They’re not,” Mr. Jedinak stated. “If the driver notices, the bin will be tagged and left behind,” he said. The issue is that the improper bags increase the processing costs, as the mate- rial has to be sorted and the plastic bags removed, Mr. Jedinak noted. If a plastic bag does get into the process, “it contaminates the finished product,” Mr. Jedinak stated, adding there would be plas- tic bits leftover in the product. “The underlining theme of a composting program is to only include items that can break down,” Mr. Jedinak stated. A list of acceptable liner bags is available at www.durhamregionwaste.ca. The list is also available by e-mail at waste@durham. ca, or by calling 905-579-5264 (toll-free at 1- 800-667-5671). All compostable material collected in Dur- ham is processed at a facility in Pickering and the finished material is given to resi- dents to use in their lawns or gardens. Police still won’t release woman’s name BY JENNIFER STONE jstone@durhamregion.com WHITBY -- A 34-year-old Dur- ham District School Board teacher and Bowmanville resi- dent has pleaded guilty to sex crime charges involving a 14- year-old boy. But, police continue to refuse to identify the woman, say- ing releasing her name would identify her victim, even though he’s not a student at the Whitby elementary school where she taught during the last school year. She has been suspended with pay by the Durham board since her arrest. The woman pleaded guilty to sexual interference and assault, said Detective Consta- ble Jenn Bickle-Hearn, of Dur- ham police. Charges were laid in Feb- ruary, after Durham Region- al Police officers on patrol in rural Clarington checked a parked vehicle and found a woman they say was engaged in a sexual act with a boy inside the car. The woman is said to have coached the boy in an ath- letics program not associat- ed with the Durham District School Board. The woman’s fate as a teach- er remains up in the air. The school board’s superinten- dent of employee relations, Lou Vavougios, and education director Martyn Beckett were both unavailable for com- ment. The woman is to appear in court again this month. --- with files by Jeff Mitchell COURTS Durham teacher pleads guilty to sex crime newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • August 14, 200912 AP Port Perry, ON www.greatblueheroncasino.com Know your limit, play within it! The program, which has been running since 2004, has recently been granted charitable status by the Canada Revenue Agency. It also plans to expand to St. Mark’s United Church in Whitby starting on a bi-weekly basis by the end of September. “It’s sort of like a giant, organized play date,” said Heather Johnson, Footprints’ marketing and administration consul- tant. The program usually cares for about five children and volunteers work one-on- one with them. There’s also time for arts, crafts, dress-up, reading and playing. The organization has decided not to focus on therapy. “Because they’re children first, not autistic first,” Ms. Johnson said. She explained the program offers a chance for parents of autistic children to do regular activities that may be a chal- lenge on a regular basis. Ms. Bragg finds sometimes she dedicates so much time to Rebecca, that her other girls may feel left out, and Footprints, aside from providing fun and productivity for Rebecca, allows for more time with the other children, who range from two to 12. “The families that use our services find that it’s something they just can’t live without,” Ms. Johnson said. And because it’s a volunteer-driven charity, the cost is rather low, she said. She added it costs $5 an hour. “Footprints has been very good for us because there’s very little you can put your children into that doesn’t cost a lot of money,” Ms. Bragg said, adding she’s grateful for the one-on-one feature, which is generally costly. Ms. Bragg receives some funding from the government for Rebecca’s develop- ment and some programs she uses, but it isn’t enough and despite the funding, costs still add up. Camps, for example, cost about $500 minimum per week for Rebecca, but only $160 to $180 for her other children. She also has trouble find- ing programs that accept children who are not toilet-trained, which Rebecca is not. “It is a different experience, but I want to see these children be treated and have the same opportunities as other chil- dren,” she said. Ms. Bragg pointed out Rebecca also learns social skills through Footprints. The very outgoing girl doesn’t under- stand road safety and also has a tendency to lunge for other people’s food if she sees something appetizing at a restaurant, for example. “It’s not that problematic because she’s a young, sweet, beautiful-looking child,” she said. But, with help through much-needed programs like Footprints and others she hopes will spring up, Ms. Bragg hopes Rebecca will communicate better and have more opportunities in the future. Unfortunately, a good night’s sleep is overlooked by many people. Sleep deprivation can cause accidents, make people abnormally irritated and sharp, reduce productivity and cause time away from work. Even with good food and exercise, your body still only rebuilds and rejuvenates in your deepest stages of sleep, which many people have trouble getting. Sleep can help you heal, as well as repair mental, physical and organ stress. If you are not getting enough R.E.M. sleep or late stage sleep it’s often because of an old mattress. Over the years, a mattress’ springs can lose tension. Springs that have lost tension can create pressure points and lack of proper support so you toss and turn rather than get enough deep stage sleep. Allergies and breathing problems can be a big problem for people at night also. We all lose lots of body fl uids and layers of dead skin each night which fi ll your mattress and supply a cozy home for mites with lots of food for them and help cause allergies for many of us. If you are disturbed by your partner getting in and out of bed, a high coil count mattress or Nasa foam or Latex mattress with less interruption as they get in and out of bed will help. If you wake all through the night because you are too hot, a larger mattress with more individual space can help. Also, many mattresses that have more fl exible or open cell products in them like wool, bamboo, cotton, Nasa foam or latex will help control body temperatures. Remember for the amount you use a mattress, most are very inexpensive. If you spend $1000 on a mattress set over 10 years, it’s only $100 a year. Most of us spend a few dollars a day for coff ee to stay awake. Why not spend that money on fresh springs, a mite free mattress, and get a better night’s sleep? The Sleep Specialists at MasterBedroom have been helping Durham residents fi nd the right sleep surface since 1982. They have Tempur-Pedic, Serta, Thera-Pedic, Nasa Foam, Latex and waterbed mattress sets and more. Let their experienced staff help you fi nd the right mattress the fi rst time. They do not sell used, repackaged mattresses. This is very important with the problems and epidemics of today like bed bugs, H1N1 Flu, Bird Flu, SARS, etc. MasterBedroom is also excited to announce that they are now carrying Amisco stools. The custom stools are available in 12 choices of fi nishes to go with any wood or to match your hardware or appliances, and come with a 10 year warranty. MasterBedroom has been carrying Amisco beds for over 20 years and is now off ering the same Canadian made high quality stools to the Durham Region. Nick has been studying piano for almost nine years. Ajax teen’s talent is key to charitable deed Money collected is music to his ears BY IZABELA JAROSZYNSKI newsroom@durhamregion.com AJAX -- When Nick Nolan set out to perform a solo recital in front of a large audience at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Ajax, he wasn’t thinking only about the music. To the delight of those in atten- dance, he performed Bach, Brahms, Beethoven, Debussy, Kabalevsky and even a little Cho- pin. And at the end he received a standing ovation and played two encores. But for the Ajax teen, even more gratifying than the praise for his performance was the $850 his concert raised for the Mustard Seed Mission, money that will be used to develop schools for chil- dren in Indonesia. Mustard Seed supports schools in Indonesia that combine music and drama with a full academic curriculum and the cause is in line with Mr. Nolan’s belief in the power of music. “Music encourages kids to be at school, in the same way that sports do,” he said. “It helps them interact with friends, to be more social and motivates them to learn something new.” When he heard about the Mus- tard Seed schools through the pas- tor’s wife at his church, Mr. Nolan decided it was a cause he needed to support. With the help of his parents and the church commu- nity, he set up a solo recital. Mr. Nolan began his own musi- cal education at the age of nine and says it transformed his life. His piano teacher from day one has been Glenda Varty and he says she continues to be a big support- er of his music. “She really helped me devel- op my skills through practice,” he says. It was these hours of practice - - the drive to keep working at it week after week despite other dis- tractions -- that taught Mr. Nolan his strong work ethic. He first realized that music was his passion when he stopped thinking of practice as practice and started to look forward to learning new techniques and increasing his skill. “You have to be able to play for the love of an instrument,” he said. It is a lesson he tries to instill in younger kids who are just starting out in their lessons. A recent graduate from J. Clarke Richardson Secondary School in Ajax -- where he played sax in the jazz and concert bands and piano accompaniment for some of the choirs -- Mr. Nolan’s pas- sion is taking him to the University of Toronto’s music and education program where he plans to get a dual degree. While he eventually hopes to become a high school music teacher and encourage students to learn through music, for now he is just looking forward to attend- ing a program with students who are just as passionate about music as he is. “It will be a lot of people who share that interest and I’m really excited to be part of that.” MUSIC You have to be able to play for the love of an instrument. Thursday August 20Friday August 21Saturday August 22 at the Pickering Town Centre Dance Schools, Education, Gymnastics, Martial Arts, and More.... Art in the Park runs Aug. 15 and 16 BY REKA SZEKELY rszekely@durhamregion.com AJAX-PICKERING -- Local artists are pack- ing up and heading to Uxbridge to partici- pate in the Lions Club’s “Art in the Park” this weekend. Among them is Ajax’s Kirsty Naray, who will be taking a colourful array of her glass art with her. Included are jewelry, beads, tiny figurines and more. Ms. Naray has participat- ed in the Uxbridge festival for about six years now. “I just enjoy meeting people and sharing what I make,” she said. Ms. Naray expects Ajax and Pickering resi- dents to head up to the event and says they’ll get an opportunity to check out the works of a wide variety of artists. “Durham has some very talented artists in every medium and it needs to be showcased more than it is,” said Ms. Naray. At the event, there will be a little bit of everything including paintings, wood, pot- tery, jewelry and more, and Ms. Naray said it’s a great opportunity for people to grab gifts or one-of-a-kind accents for their homes. Robert Hinves of Pickering has also partic- ipated in the event for at least six years. His work includes watercolour paintings over pen and ink depicting peaceful rural scenes and more abstract work. “I use real leaves and lay them into a pat- tern and repaint them with my own colours in acrylic,” he said. Mr. Hinves said he’s also looking forward to chatting with the public at the event. “Quite a lot of people come into the booth and I get to talk to them for a fair bit,” he said. Larry Peet, president of the Lions Club, said the event has proven popular with artists and it fills up every year. “We’ve had to say no to a fair amount of artists,” he said. “We get an awful, awful lot of praise from artists who come.” The Lions Art in the Park runs Aug. 15 and 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elgin Park in Uxbridge. Prior to the start of the lacrosse season, the Pickering resident had a feeling that a return to the Clarington Green Gaels Jr. B club could result in an Ontario champion- ship, and ultimately, a trip to Edmonton for the Founders Cup and a shot at national supremacy. With a 13-7 victory over Elora on Sunday, the Green Gaels secured the provincial Jr. B title in a three game sweep, and on Monday, they begin their quest for a Canadian championship. “It’s always a great feeling when you win the Ontario championship,” says Serville. “It was even a better feeling because last year we lost to Halton Hills, so this one was more of a redemption. It was a really good feeling because we worked hard all year and it paid off.” Last season, coming off a 17-3 regular sea- son, the Green Gaels were bounced from the playoffs in the East Conference semifinals, dropping a five-game series to Halton Hills. This season, after posting a 19-1 record, the Green Gaels were down two games to one to Halton Hills in the East Conference finals, but rallied to win the final two games, and advance to the league finals against the West Conference champions from Elora. Serville, an 18-year-old graduate of St. Mary Catholic Secondary School, was just as stellar in the playoffs as he was during the regular season. Coming off a 2008 cam- paign in which he registered 85 points and was named Rookie of the Year, he led the league in scoring with 41-56-97 totals in 19 games. In 13 playoff games, he posted 23- 41-64 numbers. “There really are no individuals,” he says of the reason behind the success of the team, crediting coaches Jason Crosbie and Paul Stewart with implementing a potent offen- sive system. “Our team really is unselfish. It really worked out for all of us. Most of our offence had great years and you can tell by the stats.” Serville and his teammates enter the Founders Cup as the overwhelming favou- rites. Since the Founders Cup became emblematic of the top Jr. B lacrosse team in the country in 1972, teams representing Ontario have won the title 35 times, with victories by a couple of Alberta teams, the 1999 Edmonton Miners and 1980 Enoch Tomahawks preventing a clean sweep. The Green Gaels open against Edmonton, with round robin games continuing through the rest of the week. Semifinals go Friday, with the bronze and gold medal games on Saturday. When he returns, there will be little time for Serville to rest. No sooner will he land back at home and he will be off to Florida, beginning a four-year field lacrosse scholar- ship at Jacksonville University. It will be the first time the Division I school has fielded a lacrosse program and it was one of the fea- tures that enticed Serville to go. “There aren’t many people who can say they played for a first-year team,” says Ser- ville, who played field with the Oshawa Blue Knights and won the U19 Brogden Cup this summer with Team Ontario. “Hopefully in the next four years we can become very competitive. It’s going to be a good feeling knowing you’re on a team that started it up. “I’ll be able to say I was on the very first Jacksonville University team.” PHOTO BY MICHAEL JURYSTA PICKERING -- Ryan Serville of the Clarington Green Gaels held the ball while looking for an option during Game 3 the Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B final series against Elora. Serville helped his team to a three game sweep in the series, and will accompany his team to the Founders Cup tournament in Edmonton to determine a national champion. When he returns, it’s off to Jacksonville University for a four year field lacrosse scholarship. Gallant hits pair of triples in win for Canada over Dominican Republic CZECH REPUBLIC -- Ajax’s Steph- anie Gallant had a huge hand, or rather bat, in Canada’s win over the Domini- can Republic at the U16 Easton Foun- dation Youth World Cup being held in Prague, Czech Republic. The 16-year-old catcher hit a pair of triples in a 4-0 victory, leading off the top of the second with a three-bagger and later scoring. Her second triple of the game in the top of the seventh scored the fourth run for Canada. Later in the day on Wednesday, Canada lost 1-0 to Japan in nine innings to fall to 3-1. They wrapped up the round robin against Russia on Thursday (after our deadline). Playoff rounds are Friday and Sat- urday, with the gold and bronze medal games on Sunday. The girls played a total of five games in Quebec, defeating New Brunswick 6-0, British Columbia 3- 0, Manitoba 10-1, Prince Edward Island 2-0 and in the final game they defeat- ed the host province of Quebec by a 4-0 score. In all, the girls’ team rolled over the competi- tion scoring 25 goals while surrendering only one. Both Iozzi and Magla- haes played an integral part of the team’s per- formance as Iozzi played left fullback -- a posi- tion she only plays on the provincial team -- while Maglahaes played central defence. Iozzi was awarded game MVP honours in the final game versus Quebec from her coach Ruben Flores as she shut down the Quebec captain and dangerous striker. This age group is an important group as Cana- dian officials and coach- ing staff were looking at all players for the U17 FIFA 2012 World Cup. Both girls currently play for Wexford Wildcats in the Ontario Youth Soccer League where they have advanced to the Ontario Cup quarterfinals. Should they advance with Wex- ford and win the Ontario championship, they will advance to the Canadian Club Championships in Nova Scotia, to be played in October. Ajax-Pickering beats Clarington DURHAM -- The Ajax Pickering Dolphins defeat- ed the Clarington Knights 14-12 in a nail biter of a game at Kinsmen Field dur- ing a SCOFL Junior Varsity AA semifinal game. The battle of the two Dur- ham rivals came down to Drew Rider kicking the game winning 35-yard field goal with less than 10 sec- onds left on the game clock. It was a tough, hard fought battle to the end. This was evident as there were numerous injuries during the game including both Dolphins quarterbacks leaving the game during the first half. Running back Brad MacMillan did a great job filling in at the quarterback position and keeping the Phins in the game. The Dolphins are now off to Ivor Wynne Stadium, in Hamilton, at 2 p.m. this Sat- urday to face the Niagara Storm for the SCOFL Junior Varsity AA Championship. Oshawa, ON MOBILE SHOWROOM Readers’ Choice Winner Ontario teams on top of lacrosse hill in Canada WHITBY -- The numbers tell quite the tale. Team Ontario entries at the National Lacrosse Championships in Whitby put forth a simply dominating effort, culmi- nating in a trio of gold medals last week- end at Iroquois Park, capping off another successful Ontario Lacrosse Festival. Ontario’s Bantam boys and girls, and the boys’ Peewee outfits defended their home province against the rest of the country, each taking home gold following champi- onship game wins over British Columbia. On the Bantam ledger, the boys there were just as dominating, throttling each of their opponents all the way through to the final, where they continued their winning ways with an 11-7 victory against B.C. In compiling a perfect 8-0 mark, Ontar- io outscored their opponents by a 117-15 count, and were led offensively by Nicho- las Ritchie, who scored a tournament-high 30 points. The top scorer from Durham Region was Pickering’s Brandon Robinson, who fin- ished fifth in that department on the club with seven goals and 20 points in the eight games. Connor Laird (6-5-11), Nicholas Karam (6-1-7), Rylee McKinnon (2-2-4) and Michael Panowyk (2-2-4), all of Whitby, also chipped in offensively for Ontario who defeated Saskatchewan 25-0 to kick the tournament off before running over Quebec 16-0, New Brunswick 20-2, Iro- quois 7-1, Nova Scotia 18-1, B.C. 9-3 and Alberta 12-1 in earning their place in the final. In girls action, they needed the benefit of overtime, but Ontario capped their own run of perfection by posting a 4-3 victory against B.C. to clinch the gold. Their division was scaled down with only four teams competing, however, Ontario still managed seven games played, all wins as they defeated Alberta 5-0 and 10-1, New Brunswick 6-1 and 9-0 and B.C. twice even before meeting in the final. Those scores were 5-4 and 4-3. Five Whitby girls suited up for their prov- ince, with each contributing to the offence, led by Kendra Parenteau (4-4-8). Kennedy Milburn (3-2-5), Shalyn Pavlisko (3-2-5), Shannon Sisk (0-2-2) and Amanda Kerno- han (1-0-1) also found the scoresheet.
