1840s buildings
could be demolished
due to Hwy. 407
BY KRISTEN CALIS
kcalis@durhamregion.com
PICKERING -- Some 150-year-old Pickering
buildings are in danger of being demolished
as a result of the Hwy. 407 expansion.
Circa-1846 buildings on the Salem Road
property (also known as The Rogers Proper-
ty) consist of four stone buildings: a house; a
coach house, a barn and a workshop. There
are also ruins of a wooden barn and a metal
barn that still stands. In 2003, the Ministry
of Transportation hired Archaeologix Inc.
to assess the property. The Rogers property
sits in the path of the future 407 expansion,
which is currently undergoing an environ-
mental assessment.
Archaeologix found that although the
buildings have been altered, the property is
still significant because: the cluster of early
stone buildings is rare; the stone outbuildings
are unique; the Rogers family was influential
to the area; and the house is one of very few
remaining stone houses in Pickering Town-
ship dating from the first half of the 19th cen-
tury.
The report recommended the property
remain on the current location. If it must be
moved, the cluster should remain the same.
“The buildings are more important as a
group than as independent entities, and their
siting is a significant factor in the estimation
of their heritage value,” it said.
President of the Pickering Township Histor-
ical Society, John Sabean, agreed. “I would be
very, very reluctant to move it but if the Prov-
ince insists the road has to go there, I would
agree only if it went on a similar space,” he
said. It’s not just the buildings that are impor-
tant, Mr. Sabean said. So is the Rogers family.
“Rogers is extremely important to this area,”
he said.
He added the Rogers family that owned the
farm is in fact distantly related to the same
family that owns Rogers Communications
Inc. today. The Rogers family was prominent
in early Ajax and Pickering history, he said.
Wing Rogers, who built the home, was the
son of Timothy, who was responsible for set-
tling 40 families in the area.
The household remained in the Rogers
family until 1935. It was purchased by the
Province in 2003 and is currently rented out
and still operating as a farm.
Pickering chief administrator Tom Quinn
feels the property is significant given its his-
tory and the City has sent a letter to the MTO
to that effect. The letter asks that the build-
ing remains occupied to avoid deteriora-
tion, that the Province continues to maintain
it and that it consults the City before making
any decisions on the buildings.
He said moving the buildings could be
costly (in the $100,000 range) and doesn’t
feel it’s Pickering’s responsibility to pay for it.
“I think it’s a responsibility that they (MTO)
work with the City,” he said. “And that’s part
of the cost of what they’re doing.”
Also, he questions whether the farm would
fit historically into the Pickering Museum Vil-
lage, especially with alterations to the roofing.
“One hundred years ago ,they didn’t have
aluminum roofs,” he said, adding changing
to cedar shakes could cost about $25,000.
Mr. Quinn said the MTO has agreed to
meet with the City regarding the property.
A MTO representative was unavailable for
comment.

Town meeting
planned for July 27
AJAX -- Town of Ajax officials want
youth who are looking to make a differ-
ence in their community to come to an
open house.
Youth are invited to provide feedback
on programming to the Town on July 27
from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
By showing up, they’ll have a chance
to win prizes and high school students
who attend will qualify for community
service hours. Refreshments will also be
served.
“Youth voices are powerful, and it’s
important that we listen to them,” said
Robert Prochilo, community recreation
youth coordinator. “We can learn valu-
able things from the youth that attend
this forum, which will help determine
future youth programming, youth space,
and partnerships.”

P
carpooling and public transit,” said Shaw-
na Mutton, executive director of Durham
Sustain Ability.
“Each day, Durham residents make
800,000 private car trips that are less than
six kilometres from their home.”
Added Gail Lawlor, a board member for
the group, “Durham is a transportation-
heavy region.”
The organization is providing incen-
tives for residents and businesses to get
involved in the contest, which is open
until Aug. 31.
There are prizes, including a donated
bicycle and GPS unit, with winners to be
publicly recognized in the fall.
Durham Sustain Ability has also
launched an EcoDriver program, encour-
aging commuters to drive efficiently, buy
fuel efficiently, and drive less.
“There is a 35-per cent difference
between the most and least fuel-efficient
drivers on the road,” reads a release from
the group.
To support the initiative, a program
including workshops and presentations
will run until next March.
The program also features tire pressure
clinics, with one held at the Pickering
Town Centre last Saturday, July 18. Ses-
sions are designed to educate drivers on
how to properly check tire pressure.
“Just one tire under-inflated by eight
pounds per square inch reduces fuel
efficiency by four per cent,” reads the
release.
Meanwhile, a free service aimed at help-
ing Durham residents identify potential
problems with their wells was launched
by the group in May, and the organization
is hoping to reach more well owners in
Uxbridge.
The 2009 Well Aware program is a “free,
confidential and non-regulatory inspec-
tion” with a trained water guide. “The
program is purely educational and guides
residents in identifying risks and points
them in the right direction for solutions,”
notes Durham Sustain Ability.
“The home visit is a one-on-one tutorial
about how to care for your well and septic
system.”

Why are scientist right
on ice ages but wrong
on climate change?
To the editor:
Recently you printed a letter question-
ing human influence on global warming.
The writer suggested that scientists
believe the last ice age was 20,000 years
ago and that the ice sheets shrank to their
current size 7,000 years ago.
Therefore, we should assume global
warming is a naturally occurring trend
and coal plants are relatively harmless.
This counters the arguments of the Inter-
national Panel on Climate Change which
includes the contributions of hundreds
of the world’s leading scientists on cli-
mate change.
Why, may I ask, am I supposed to
believe scientists when they discuss ice
ages but not when they discuss climate
change?

PATRIOTISM
Children’s rendition
of O Canada on bridge
touched heart
To the editor:
On Sunday, my husband and I were on
the Harwood bridge to show support for
the families of our fallen hero.
We have turned out for most of these
brave men and will continue to do so
as long as these sons and daughters are
fighting this terrible battle.
Sunday was a little bit different in a
way that we had a family of four behind
us with Mom, Dad and two small girls
whose ages I would guess to be about
three and four.
The kids kept asking if the cars were
coming yet and then someone said here
it comes.
Mom and Dad picked up a child each in
their arms and by this time the cars were
close to us, when, all of a sudden, both
youngsters started to sing O Canada.
I have never felt anything in my life so
touching.
It was just perfect, so I say a great big
thank you to two lovely little girls and an
even bigger one to the parents who took
the time to teach these kids what love is.

AUTO INDUSTRY
At least General Motors
is still standing and
providing jobs
To the editor:
Let’s be thankful for the jobs that are
left!
Reading the letters mourning the Gen-
eral Motors job cuts is very sad. I do
empathize with the emotional outbursts
from workers and their families who are
affected by the re-structuring of GM.
What I do struggle with is the overall
attitude of blame that pervades many of
these letters.
I am not sure who this blame is target-
ed at.
Surely it is not the “new GM,” which is
partially owned by us, the Canadian tax-
payers.
Is it the “old GM,” a company which
submitted to workers demands for wage
levels that clearly made the North Ameri-
can auto industry non-competitive from
a global perspective?
Or is it the government who is to blame
for allowing “foreign automakers” a
chance to compete in the first place?
Perhaps we should just be grateful
that we (Canadian taxpayers) bailed out
GM and there are still at least some jobs
available at a wage rate that workers will
struggle to find elsewhere.

Community pulls together after fire changes lives
Anyone who has ever lived in a small
community knows just how supportive
neighbours can be in bad times.
Sara Pooler knows exactly how things
work in small towns, having grown up in
Orono.
But she got a refresher course when fire
swept through her rented apartment and
the Claremont General Store in north
Pickering on July 12. The fire, which gut-
ted the store, Ms. Pooler’s apartment and
a second apartment in the 150-year-old
building, left her and her two children
homeless and without their possessions.
To make matters worse, she had no insur-
ance.
Now, close to two weeks after the dev-
astating blaze, she’s been overwhelmed
by the support of Claremont and area
residents.
“The outpouring from the communi-
ty has been amazing,” she said. “I knew
they’d be supportive -- they pull together
for everybody. I’ve had so much support
from people who never even knew me.
It’s been overwhelming.”
That support was evident even while
the fire was being put out by various fire
departments, she said. As she stood there
watching the fire (her children were away
for the weekend), people were pressing
money into her hands and making sure
she had water and food.
The Claremont residents came through
for the Pooler family, plus the store and
building owner, Daniel Park, and the sec-
ond tenant, Derek Budarick, in many
ways. Ms. Pooler spoke of furniture she’s
been given and Claremont neighbours
asking her what items the children lost
so those can be replaced.
Last weekend, a fundraiser was held
and about 200 people attended, enjoying
a variety of activities and raising money
for their neighbours.
There was no tally on the money raised
by press time but all proceeds are going
to Ms. Pooler, Mr. Park and Mr. Budarick.
Ms. Pooler has already found a new
place to live with her children, not far
from Claremont.
And the landlord, on hearing their
plight, waived the first month’s rent.
In keeping with that community spirit,
Mr. Park is already looking for a tempo-
rary location for his general store, a busi-
ness his neighbours rely on.
It’s events like this fire that show just
what people and communities are made
of. Residents in small communities band
together to help their neighbours when
bad times roll in, regardless of whether
they know them or not. (That’s not to say
support like this can’t be found in cities
and towns. It can and is.)
It’s not surprising to see this happen
but it is heartwarming and commend-
able.

After years of struggle
Paul Feldman finally
gets an answer
BY IAN MCMILLAN
imcmillan@durhamregion.com
DURHAM -- After developing a lower motor
neuron disease that left him unable to use
his hands and arms, all Paul Feldman want-
ed to know was how he could lead an active,
productive life.
But nobody he turned to -- not his doc-
tors, specialists or government officials
he sought out for work -- could give him a
straight answer. Instead, he bounced from
one department to another leaving him job-
less with no answers and little hope.
“The fact that I’m an utterly stubborn per-
son is the only thing that kept me going,” he
said.
Then one day he discovered something
that had eluded him for three years: an
answer.
Mr. Feldman was reading a newspaper
article by a reporter who was suffering from
Lou Gehrig’s Disease. It described an Assis-
tive Technology Clinic at Sunnybrook Hos-
pital. A quick referral from one of his doc-
tors landed him an appointment at the clin-
ic. And that changed his life.
Clinic doctors put him into the assistive
development program and administered
a few tests before putting him in front of a
computer. He was then asked to read some-
thing and, as if by magic, the words immedi-
ately appeared on screen.
As Mr. Feldman describes this memora-
ble visit to the clinic a smile spreads across
his face and his voice rises with excitement.
He’s used the software for a number of years
now, but the joy and the freedom it gives
him is obvious.
“There are so many things you’re able to
do without any use of your arms or hands
at all. There are so many opportunities,” he
said.
The software that allows him to speak into
his computer is called Dragon Naturally
Speaking. It lets him produce written docu-
ments, do spreadsheets, power-point pre-
sentations, send and receive e-mails, surf
the Internet -- anything “at speeds that are
going to blow you away,” he said.
The best part about the technology is that
most of the costs were covered by the gov-
ernment through the Assistive Devices Pro-
gram. In Ontario, the Province pays for 75
per cent of the cost while the consumer is
responsible for the rest. But if the patient is
on the Ontario Disability Support Program,
like Mr. Feldman, the costs are fully cov-
ered.
“As it turned out, virtually all of it was cov-
ered. It was great,” he said. “Now I have a
hope of doing something.”
Pearl Gryfe is the director of Assistive Tech-
nology at Sunnybrook Hospital. She was Mr.
Feldman’s therapist when he first came to
Sunnybrook and said the technology “gets
better every day.”
“We have technology today where you can
control your entire environment just with
the touch of a switch or the blink of an eye,”
she said. “It’s unbelievable.”
The wheelchair Mr. Feldman now uses
also allows him to do many of the things an
able-bodied person can do. As he explained
it, anything that can be run by remote con-
trol can be operated by a person without the
use of his arms or legs. His wheelchair has
technology programmed into it that allows
him to open and close his blinds, turn his
lights off and on, operate his TV, DVD and
stereo, and one day he says he’d like to get
it programmed to open and close his front
door. This is all accomplished through
movements of his head.
“There are so many kinds of environmen-
tal control units that would give that person
the ability to do so much,” he said.
But if this technology can do so much
good for people who need it, why do so
many professionals know nothing about it?
That’s something that makes Mr. Feldman
angry.
“Why didn’t my doctor send me to that
clinic, why didn’t the service provider send
me to that clinic?” he asked. “That, to me,
is so typical of what’s going on out there
today.”
Ms. Gryfe admitted there’s not a lot of
money at the clinic for marketing.
“No, we’re not that well known,” she said.
But Mr. Feldman hopes to change that
beginning with a website project he’s begun
with the Durham Region Employment Net-
work (DREN) in partnership with the Dur-
ham Region Local Training Board. The pur-
pose of the site will be to give people with
disabilities the information they need to get
the help they deserve. The website, www.
disabilitydoorway.com, will be launched
later this summer.
“There are technologies out there, they
are available and they’re government-fund-
ed. People don’t know about them,” said Mr.
Feldman.
Carol Edwards, the DREN executive direc-
tor, said her organization has accessibility
information on its website called the One
Stop Disability Shop, but with Mr. Feldman’s
vision “we’re going to bring the two togeth-
er.”
“I think he’s an amazing individual,” she
said. “He’s a great inspiration for having a
positive attitude, an attitude that if you want
to do something you can do it and overcome
all kinds of challenges and barriers.”
Mr. Feldman said the goal of this project
is to help people who don’t know where to
turn due to a disability. He hopes it will give
people the help they need, help he says he
didn’t have before he discovered the Assis-
tive Technology Clinic.
“Too many people don’t know about the
programs or organizations that can help
people with disabilities. My heart goes out
to them. The knowledge of these things is
not there,” he said.

Why aren’t non-compostable plastic bags
acceptable in Durham’s compost stream?
The use of non-compostable plastic bags in the
Region’s Green Bin program reduces the quality
of yard and food waste material collected and
received at the compost facility. Bags that
are not 100 per cent compostable will leave
residual bits of plastic in the processed material.
As a result, the cost of processing the material
increases, and the quality decreases due to a
higher level of plastic contaminants.
Residents may have seen some shopping
bags called “OxoBiodegradable™” bags.
These bags are being promoted in Durham as
biodegradable and recyclable. Oxo bags are
neither biodegradable or compostable and
are not accepted in the Region’s Green Bin
program.
Prior to the launch of the Green Bin program,
Regional staff advised local retailers on which
bags would be accepted in the Region’s
program. Our promotion and education staff
continuously promote 100 per cent certifi ed
compostable bags to
area residents. While the
Region cannot dictate
to retailers the type of
bags they can sell, it is
important that residents
look for the 100 per cent
certifi ed compostable
logo on all bags they
buy for the Green Bin program. For more
information on compostable bags accepted in
the Region’s program, and a list of where you
can purchase certifi ed liner bags throughout
the Region, please visit our website.
How can I decrease odours from my kitchen
food waste container?
Too much moisture in your kitchen container can
cause unpleasant odours. Put some paper towel
or small pieces of newspaper in the bottom of
your compostable liner bag to absorb liquids.
You can also alternate layers of food waste, with
layers of soiled paper towels or napkins, to help
absorb moisture as food accumulates. Baking
soda sprinkled at the bottom of the container
is also effective at reducing unpleasant owners.
Some people freeze meat and fi sh scraps,
and only put them in the container just before
the bag is due to be removed. Emptying your
kitchen container every two or three days is the
most effective way to minimize odours.
I’m moving to Clarington from Ajax. Should I
take my blue box and green bin?
Yes. Residents are asked to take their blue box,
kitchen composter and curbside green bin with
them when they move within Durham Region.
If you are a new resident who moved into the
area from other parts of the province, or have
moved from an apartment to a house, you will
be supplied with a blue box and the green bin
kit (one time, free of charge). Please contact our
Waste Management Centre at 905-579-5264 or
1-800-667-5671 to arrange delivery. Residents
are reminded that if your blue box or green bin is
broken, bring the item to the Waste Management
Centre located at 4600 Garrard Rd. in Whitby
and exchange it for a new
one. Thanks for recycling,
and enjoy your new home.
But, it doesn’t mean
you’ll be trekking

AJAX -- The Town of Ajax is challeng-
ing families to walk to the Vancouver 2010
Olympics.
But it doesn’t involve trekking across the
Rockies; instead, the Town wants residents
to grab pedometers and contribute their
steps towards the equivalent of the trip
from Ajax to British Columbia before Feb.
12, 2010.
For the average person, it would take 6.25
million steps to walk to Vancouver and fam-
ilies can borrow pedometers from the pub-
lic library to work towards that goal togeth-
er.
They can then log on to logyoursteps.com
to keep track of how they’re doing. People
can also complete a ballot to win a prize if
they participate.
The challenge is part of the Town’s sports
and physical activity strategy. Walking reg-
ularly can reduce the risk for heart disease,
stroke and type 2 diabetes, increase energy

Outstanding students
get M. Weston award
AJAX -- An Ajax man is one of two Ontario students receiv-
ing a scholarship for outstanding academic achievements
in mental health studies.
Magnus Mfoafo-M’Carthy, a PhD student at the Univer-
sity of Toronto, is getting a $7,500 Hilary M. Weston Schol-
arship to continue his research on mental health services
in multicultural communities.
Margaret McLauchlan, of Blenheim, a University of
Windsor student, also received a $7,500 scholarship to
develop a specialized program supporting post-second-
ary students with psychiatric disabilities.
The scholarship was created by the Province in honour
of Hilary M. Weston, Ontario’s 26th Lieutenant Governor.
“I am honoured to award these two students with the
Hilary M. Weston Scholarship,” Ms. Weston said. “Their
commitment and dedication to mental health studies
makes a remarkable impact on the lives of people who live
with the effects of mental illness.”
In Ontario, one in five people will experience a mental
illness in their lives.

Renown for her expert advice
on healthy living, having appeared
on CTV Newsnet, Global News,
Chex Channel 12 “First Take

addition to contributing to articles
in community newspapers as well
as Elle Canada Magazine - Foy has opened U Weight
Loss Clinics in both Ajax and Pickering.
“Our program is based on science and we offer three
basic steps,” she explains. “The fi rst is to detox and
cleanse, the second is to stabilize the clients’ blood
sugar levels and the fi nal step is to increase their
metabolism. We encourage total health and ensure our
clients get all the essential nutrients necessary to make
weight loss easy.”
Clients begin by taking part in a free health analysis.
“We sit down and discuss their health goals, whether
that’s losing weight or just maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Our program encourages people to achieve their own
personal health goals. Regardless of whether or not
they decide to pursue those goals with the U Weight
Loss Program, everyone receives a free detox and
cleanse. “It is a very mild cleanse that can be used in
conjunction with their current diet, and after they have
started we will follow up with them to see how they are
doing.” Our main goal is to change people’s lives and
make losing weight easy by educating our clients and
clearing up the many nutrition myths that interfere with
them meeting their goal and maintaining their weight
loss permanently.”
Through its employees, U Weight Loss also offers up
personal experiences and successes. Foy herself lost
over 50 pounds after her pregnancy by applying the “3
secrets to Weight Loss” that the program is based on.
Ciara Foy became a nutritionist because she loves
helping people: “There is nothing more rewarding than
helping someone lose weight, get healthy and change
their lives. When I see my clients smiling because of
their renewed confi dence, coming off medications for
health conditions such as high cholesterol or blood
pressure and even reversing their type II diabetes, I

Do you know the 3 secrets to lasting weight loss?
CIARA FOY
One in fi ve Canadians experiences stress-
related health conditions, from headaches to heart
and circulatory troubles. Of premature deaths, a
large number are stress-related, with coronary heart
disease leading the pack.
Technically speaking, a stressor is almost anything
that triggers biological changes and produces what
is called the “stress response”. Your body reacts
to stress partly by activating adrenal hormones.
The “fi ght or fl ight” response turns some adrenals
on while turning others off. These hormones can
increase sugar in the blood for fast energy for the
brain and muscles. When extreme stress situations
have ended, the hormones cortisol and adrenalin
are supposed to be “turned off”, allowing other
hormones to turn back “on.” However, chronic
stress can prevent stress hormones from turning
off, making it hard for the body to recover and relax.
Continual high levels of stress hormones can cause
cellular damage, blood sugar problems, and adrenal
exhaustion.
Can you undo effects of chronic stress? Many
people fi nd relief through exercise, travel, hobbies,
or by expanding their personal and social activities.
Diet is also very important.
Dr. Joyce Johnson explains, “Stress can be
caused by, and can cause, nutrient defi ciencies.
Before resorting to medications, I advise patients to
improve their diets and take natural stress-supportive
supplements. A balanced formula of B vitamins,
such as B-Calm, can protect nervous system health
and help prevent stress-related illness.”
She adds, “There are adaptogenic herbs like
ashwagandha — well known to herbalists, but
new to most Canadians — that help shut off the
stress response and normalize cortisol production.
Modern science and ancient healing traditions meet
when companies like webber naturals use both to
develop effective anti-stress supplements. Good
food, exercise and appropriate supplementation can
rebalance your nervous system to turn off chronic
stress.” - News Canada

At last, it’s July and summer is fi nally
here! It’s time to get out the shorts
and tank tops and don’t forget those
bikini’s, right? I can see most of you
cringing at the thought, because the
truth is as much as we can’t wait for
summer to arrive, when it gets here
and we peel off the layers of clothing
we’ve been hiding under all winter,
we’re a littleuncomfortable exposing
all that skin.
Summer is a tricky time because it’s
the time that we want to look our
best, but it’s also the time of year
that we fi nd the most excuses as to
why we can’t stick to a healthy eating
plan or get our exercise classes in.
Whether it is a vacation, or we’re
busy with friends and family or
simply enjoying more wine then
usual on a patio, summer is a time
when many of us get off track.
But let me ask you, when is it going
to be the “right” time to lose weight?
When is it going to be “easy”? When
are you not going to have a birthday
party to attend or holiday to enjoy??
The truth is NEVER.
Losing weight and getting healthy
is something that you have to do
TODAY because if not now when?
How many times have you promised
yourself that Monday you would go
to the gym, or eat healthy and then
Monday came - and went and nothing
in your life changed? Permanent
weight loss isn’t about the right time,
it’s about making a commitment to
putting YOU and YOUR health fi rst
because I promise you that if you
don’t, nobody else will.

SABRINA BYRNES / METROLAND
AJAX -- It was a busy afternoon of rugby for the
Ajax Wanderers rugby club on Saturday after-
noon, as the men’s #1 team laid a 57-3 beat-
ing on North Halton. Clockwise, from above:
Jason Locke, of the Ajax Wanderers, tried to
hang on to the ball while being tackled; Cam
May of the Ajax team got a boost up in the air
as he reached out to grab the ball in the line-
out; Evan Pitcher, of the Ajax Men’s 1st team,
held on tight to the ball while trying to fend off
a North Halton player; Kyle Armstrong, of Ajax,
looked up field for his next move as he tried to
stay out of the reach of a North Halton player.

AJAX -- The Ajax Heat U9
boys did their best to repre-
sent Ajax and the Ajax Soc-
cer Club in their own tourna-
ment.
The weekend tournament
attracted 80 teams participat-
ing over the five age groups
(U7 to U11). The U9 divi-
sion was 16-teams deep with
teams from Guelph, Erin
Mills, Peterborough, Leaside,
North Toronto, Scarborough,
Oak Ridges, Northumber-
land, Pickering, North York
and Rexdale.
The Heat got the their
weekend started with a 4-2
win over last year’s defend-
ing champion North Toron-
to Nitros. Playing some of
their best soccer, the boys
kept focused and defeated
Olympic Flame 10–0 and
Oak Ridges 5-0 to round out
a well-played afternoon.
On Sunday, the boys awoke
to sunny skies and got to work
as they entered the quarterfi-
nals against Pickering Gold.
A 7–3 win moved the Heat
closer to their goal as they set
their sights on a very com-
petitive Leaside squad. Both
Leaside and North Toronto
Nitros are tied for first in the
YDSL North Division post-
ing 6 wins, 2 ties and 1 loss
records. The Heat would
not be denied and netted six
goals in the semifinal match
while only allowing one goal
against.
A resilient North Toron-
to Nitros battled through
the quarter and semifinal
matches to advance to the
final, which was a repeat of
the Ajax Soccer Club 2008
Tournament.
The Heat started off the
scoring in the first half
going ahead 1–0. In the sec-
ond half, the Nitros tied the
match. The Heat kept their
cool and pressured the Nitros
throughout the second half.
With two more goals half
way through the second half,
the Heat refused to look back
and held the Nitros off to
secure the match and cap-
ture the championship 3-1.
The Heat are also proud to
mention that they have been
in the finals of all U9 tour-
naments entered this year.
The Heat won the Peterbor-
ough City Mini Challenge in
May and were finalists at the
Toronto Cup in early July,
losing by way of penalty kicks
to a strong Vaughan Azzuri
Battlecats squad.
The team is coached by
Les Smith who is assisted
by Bobby Rose, Paul LaRosa
and Michelle Dunne. Team
members are Jabari Drakes,
Finley Kibbey–Dunne,
Ipariko Emojong, Tor John-
son, James Kelly, Anthony
LaRosa, Terique Moham-
med, Marshyl Pollard, Jamel
Rose, Jaiden Smith, Khayden
Stewart, Brenden Wade and
Zavia Williams.
Sponsors include Orkin/
PCO, Bell, LaRosa’s No Frills,
Stoddard Silencer and Lucas
Automotive.

Death leaves a heartache
nothing can heal.
Love leaves a memory
nothing can steal.
It only takes a little space
To write how much we miss you.
But it will take
the rest of our lives
To forget the day we lost you.
Missing you both everyday
in some small way
Love always,
Eva (wife & mother),
James (son & brother),
Sara (daughter & sister).
