As their courtship led to their 2001 marriage, Don- ald and Nicole Woods were looking to the future: a new house they were saving for, a new job that would allow Mr. Woods more time at home. And maybe, they thought, after their son became independent, Ms. Woods could join Mr. Woods on the road full-time. Sometimes they even ventured to imagine Mr. Woods, a life-time long distance trucker, handing in his keys and settling down. He tried a couple of times but had always been lured back by the highway’s song, the sound of pavement under his tires. “He tried a couple of times being home,” Ms. Woods said. “He even took a job as a gas attendant -- that didn’t last long.” They reconciled themselves to the life of a trucking family and found happiness. Mr. Woods got home when he could; Ms. Woods and her son Alex -- Mr. Woods’s stepson, now 16 -- rode along when time allowed, see- ing most of the U.S. through the windshield of the high- way rig. But a shotgun blast shattered it all. Mr. Woods, 35, died when he was hijacked and robbed of his cargo, $40,000 of fresh chicken. He was found dead of a gunshot wound to the back of the head, in the sleeper compartment of his truck in Pickering on June 23, 2006. Four months later, Durham police arrested Paul Cyr, of Montreal, a fellow trucker Mr. Woods had been talk- ing to about a driving job, and charged him with first- degree murder. During a trial in Whitby that ended in late June, the Crown presented a theory that Mr. Cyr killed Mr. Woods, then sold the chicken to food processing com- panies in the GTA (police believe he got about $20,000 for the stolen chicken). Jurors deliberated a little over a day before return- ing with a guilty verdict. Mr. Cyr was sentenced to the obligatory term of life with no parole for 25 years, but Superior Court Justice Bryan Shaughnessy indicated he’d recommend to corrections officials that Mr. Cyr, who was convicted of second-degree murder in the late 1980s and served a 14-year sentence, never be released. The murder and trial have left Ms. Woods with grief and questions. Grief at the loss of a loving husband and dad, who provided her son with a strong father figure and, more importantly, a best friend. And questions about how Mr. Cyr, a convicted killer with a criminal record of escalating violence stretching back years, was licensed to drive a truck and roam the highways of Ontario and Quebec. “He was on parole for murder -- fine,” Ms. Woods said during an interview at her home near Brockville two days after Paul Cyr was sentenced. “But what’s he doing out of Quebec? What is a convicted murderer on parole doing out of his province? That just floors me. I have ques- tions and I want answers, yes. But will I ever get them?” Questions are for a future that, for now, lacks defini- tion. Ms. Woods, 36, is studying accounting online and working part-time, paying the bills and getting by. She’s worried about her son, Alex, who was just 12 when his dad was taken from him. The boy’s a bubbling caul- dron of anger and confusion and on occasion he boils over. Ms. Woods wonders how a kid so young can cope with such a cruel intrusion on his life. For now, they’re focusing on the present. “I haven’t even thought of tomorrow. I’m still trying to figure out what happened last week,” Ms. Woods said. “It’s so hard to believe it’s done; he’s guilty. He’s been sentenced to life.” She’s heard all the cliches about crime and punish- ment and closure. But so far, closure is not in sight. “Time heals all wounds -- that’s what everybody says, and that’s what they believe,” Ms. Woods said. “But that’s not how it works with something like this.” Over 200 Stores & Services Gap Sirens Zellers Urban Behavior Holly’s La Vie en Rose The Body Shop Dynamite Reitman’s Costa Blanca TRISTAN Bluenotes’Garage Clothing Co.pickeringtowncentre.com Summer Sidewalk Sale Thursday, July16th - Sunday, July19th Amazing prices The best sale of the summer A special gift for me!✓ I want it all...I want it all... Community Economic Development for Immigrant Women recently received $140,000 from the federal government for a hands-on training program focused on the food service industry. “They’re getting training in the food busi- ness, but they can use those skills in other businesses,” said the organizations executive director Iffat Zehra. Through a series of workshops and com- munity events, the women will develop a number of skills including communication, marketing, cash handling, public outreach, promotion and more, said Ms. Zehra. Incorporated in 2004, CED for Immigrant Women serves mainly South Asian women living in Ajax and Pickering, though its servic- es are available to all immigrant women, said Ms. Zehra. Over the years, the organization has had more than 150 clients, and with the additional funding over two years, Ms. Zehra is hoping to work with even more women. In the past, the organization has also received funding from the provincial government’s Trillium Foundation. The idea to start the organization came after Ms. Zehra was working at Toronto wom- en’s centre. She found gaps in the service. For example, women were going to English class- es but what they learned was not enough to get a job. “The reason was these women were not literate in their own language when they came to Canada,” she said. However, the women had other skills such as cooking, sewing, and caring for children and the elderly. The CED for Immigrant Women attempts to help women apply the skills they have. For example, in April, the organization held a daycare conference, with 24 clients attend- ing, where women learned not only about the rules governing nurseries and private homecare, but about the daycare industry as a whole. Starting this year, several clients have been working at a recently-created commu- nity garden in Pickering. Earlier this month, the organization partici- pated in Canada Day festivities in Ajax. “We put up food stalls and we sold food and there were eight to 10 clients involved in pre- paring and selling food,” said Ms. Zehra. Clients have also applied their business, communication and safe food-handling skills at the Pickering Markets. “We started this food booth in Pickering Markets as a social enterprise. For three years we trained women on that,” said Ms. Zehra. Clients who use the organization’s services identify a path they’re most interested in, fur- thering their education, finding employment or starting a small business, and the organi- zation aims to help them get there. Although the organization’s goal isn’t resume writing and job search, the women learn skills that will help them in those kinds of endeavours. Ms. Zehra said that’s because everything is hands-on at the centre. They also learn about the organization’s governance model and participate in board meetings, including delivering presentations. Because the clients participate in all aspects of running the CED for Immigrant Women, Ms. Zehra said they develop a sense of own- ership for the organization. It’s at 905 Dillingham Rd., Unit 20, in Pickering. However, if the premier does not fire Health Minister David Caplan, then I believe Dalton McGuinty should be voted out of office. Obviously Mr. Caplan is not doing his job properly or else this would, no, it should not have happened at all. It is very obvious to even me, that there are defi- nitely certain things that should have raised, at least, eyebrows, but our health minister chose to ignore them. If he loses his job, then our premier is doing his job right. If not, then he should be voted out of office. Ron Horner Oshawa SIGN OF THE TIMES Public school and prayer a complex issue To the editor: Re: Oshawa church sign a ‘thought-provoker,’ July 11 Certainly the Zion Church sign is thought- provoking and they have a point: in times of crisis, people who do not consider them- selves believers do often turn to prayer. We need also think why regular prayer was removed from public schools. It was not, as popular wisdom alleges, for fear of offending non-believers. The problem is that official prayer in a classroom can put too much pres- sure on children of different beliefs. As an adult, I stand respectfully by while people of different beliefs pray in their own way: I am in no way threatened by their prac- tice. Freedom of religion in Canada means that we can choose what religion to fol- low or choose to follow no religion, without pressure from the government or any of its employees or institutions; the pressure on a child to conform to what teacher and class- mates are doing violates that freedom. It is still acceptable to pray in school. Schools may rotate a variety of inspirational readings from different religions and from lit- erature or they may declare a few minutes of silence for prayer or meditation or whatever thinking a child may like to do. Parents who want their children to pray in school should urge their public school prin- cipal to institute the silent time; if parents need more than the prayer time, if they need their children to pray aloud, together with their teachers and classmates, they will need to consider some form of religious schooling. And that’s a whole different issue to think about. Monica A. Connolly Oshawa ENVIRONMENT Process for EA on incinerator flawed To the editor: By now it has become clear that the envi- ronmental assessment process for the Clar- ington incinerator is flawed. One of several problems with this process is the lack of wide constituency involvement. Local politicians kept this plan under wraps hoping they could ram it through without public scrutiny and opposition by the con- stituency. The planned incinerator must be shelved. This is in the interest of the people of the region for many reasons, but health and financial are the two main important ones. Durham Regional government has to create a regionwide eco-friendly waste manage- ment strategy. I firmly blame Durham Regional coun- cil for this. Now, Durham Regional council voted for the incinerator due to their neg- ligence of dealing with this issue meaning- fully for years. Durham Region politicians have demonstrated that most of them do not seem to be up to the task and they seemingly have their own agenda, They do not seem to represent the people of Durham Region and they certainly do not represent me. Steve Fekete, P. Eng. Newcastle Sentence in case leaves much room for improvement That Michael Holliday, the drunk driver who killed Pat Gostlin last October when his van slammed into her car in down- town Oshawa, would serve jail time for the offence was clear from the outset. Late last week, the Bowmanville father of three was given three-and-a-half years in jail for his role in the collision which ended the life of the popular Green Party candidate and retired teacher. But there are several disconcerting aspects of the sentence considering the gravity of the offence. The first is the decision by Justice Mary Theresa Devlin to allow Mr. Holliday a full two months to get his affairs in order before he reports to serve his jail time. Mr. Holiday knew full well long ago that he would be serving time. His sentenc- ing hearing, during which victim impact statements were heard, took place back on June 4. He has had plenty of time to get his affairs in order. In effect, the two months is delaying the inevitable and, in essence, provides Mr. Holliday a summer vaca- tion. Unfortunately, Ms. Gostlin never had the chance to say goodbye to her loved ones, never got to put her affairs in order when her life was suddenly and brutally snuffed out. The second decision is the five-year licence suspension which kicks in once Mr. Holiday goes to prison, not when he gets out. In effect, he’s really prohib- ited from driving for 18 months, not five years. That hardly seems like justice. The law, in cases like these, needs to be altered to reflect reality and should be changed so that licence suspensions for those incarcerated be in effect only when they leave prison, not when they enter it. It’s important to remember the facts of the case. According to the accident reconstruction report, Mr. Holliday was travelling 107 km/h northbound on Park Road, a city street, when he came to a red light at an intersection, where he swerved around another vehicle, knocking off its passenger-side mirror. It was then that he hit Ms. Gostlin’s car, which was west- bound on John Street. It was an horrific collision. He then tried to flea the scene, but was stopped by a witness. After that, he refused to provide a breath sample. For Ms. Gostlin’s friends and loved ones, the sentence is cold comfort. Mr. Holliday will never serve enough time. For the rest of us, it’s hard to understand how a drunk driver who kills somebody can effectively wind up with the summer off, spend time in jail, and then, when it really counts, only have his driving privi- leges revoked for a mere 18 months. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • July 17, 20096 P WE THINK... email responses to newsroom@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • July 17, 20097 AP We Can ..... √ Stop Interest Right Away! √ Re-Establish Your Credit! √ Reduce Your Debts! Among them are Tracey Vaughan, exec- utive director of the Community Develop- ment Council Durham, who’s asking local unions and municipalities to join the cam- paign asking for more dollars, better fund- ing practices including dollars keeping pace with inflation, and respect for the role of community services in Ontario. “The idea is to raise the profile, talking about the (social services) sector and what the sector does,” said Ms. Vaughan. For example, CDCD runs a program for newcomers to Canada which receives $60,000 in funding, but running the pro- gram costs about $80,000, said Ms. Vaughan. “We help people to find housing, we help people find jobs, we help them register their children in schools, all kinds of things people need help with,” she said. The CDCD offers help to 3,500 to 4,000 newcomers each year and serves them in 22 languages. “Basically their answer to us is they’re splitting the pot that they have,” she said. She said she’s not sure how the money is allocated to each municipality and thinks population and growth should be factored in. Ms. Vaughan points out studies have shown the 905 area is consistently under- funded given its rate of growth. As to how she makes up the shortfall, Ms. Vaughan said it’s just a matter of scram- bling and looking for funding from com- munity organizations and local govern- ments. In addition to supporting newcomers, the CDCD also offers a number of other servic- es, including the Durham Child Nutrition Program, which provides breakfasts and lunches to school kids and offers housing help. Ms. Vaughan points out at any given time, thousands are waiting for affordable hous- ing, in some cases for years. “The waiting lists are crazy in Durham Region,” she said. The CDCD also helps disperse rent bank funds, which is emergency help for people facing eviction because of unforeseen cir- cumstances such as a car breaking down, illness and job loss. Those funds quickly run out too. “There have been times our three-month funding has been gone in two weeks,” she said. The Province recently announced a sta- bilized $5 million annual fund for the rent bank. Durham’s share of the pot for 2009- 2010 will be $173,000, a $70,000 increase over the previous year. Ms. Vaughan would like to see all pro- grams receive guaranteed stable fund- ing, because as it stands there’s too much uncertainty. “You don’t know as a community or an organization if you’re going to have that program available next year.” She said ignoring social services will force them into a crisis. “This is when you see agencies in Dur- ham closing their doors or programs because they can’t do it anymore.” So far the campaign has garnered sup- port from unions in Durham as well as the Town of Ajax, where councillors passed a motion supporting the campaign. “I’m pleased that Tracey Vaughan has brought this forward to us and it certainly is a concern and I know that sector has been chronically underfunded,” said Councillor Colleen Jordan, who sits on the health and social services committee at the Region of Durham. She pointed out examples of need including the Best Start program, which aimed to create new daycare spots. She said funding for it has slowed to a trick- le. The program, developed 30 years ago by Barbara Arrowsmith-Young, will be offered at Pickering Christian School in Ajax this Sep- tember, pending enrolment. Based on neuroplasticity, the program gives students specific exercises to strengthen weak cognitive capacities that affect learning. Anyone interested in the Arrowsmith pro- gram can call Pickering Christian School at 905-427-3120, located at 162 Rossland Rd. E. in Ajax. LEARNING DISABILITIES Arrowsmith comes to Ajax school ments towards Pickering’s recreational infrastructure,” Mayor Dave Ryan said at the announcement. “In particular, Don Beer Arena will be more inclusive to reflect the modern needs of our com- munity,” Tony Prevedel, division head of facilities operations, said the driving force behind the expan- sion of the 40-year-old building is accessibility. “It was built in a day when hockey was a young kid’s game,” he said. Therefore, it’s currently made up of small doors and change rooms without any privacy. Now others, such as seniors, girls, and people of cultures who prefer privacy, are using the arena and changes are being made to accommodate them. The “green” roof will be land- scaped with trees, bushes, grass and benches. “It lends itself to having a really nice terrace and if you’re going to have a terrace you might as well make it go green,” Mr. Prevedel said. A banquet hall on the second floor will lead out to the green roof and will now be accessible to all with the installation of a new elevator. Accessible washrooms will be added, the plumbing and light- ing systems will be retrofitted and new insulation will make for better energy use. The rejuvenation of Don Beer Arena has been an ongoing pro- cess; in 2003, a third ice rink and six change rooms were con- structed. The Kinsmen Park fieldhouse will be more energy efficient and sustainable. New insulation will also allow for longer and better seasonal storage at Kins- men Park, coinciding with the longer playing season thanks to the recently installed artificial turf. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • July 17, 200910 P Port Hope Festival Theatre 1.800.434.5092 / phft.ca July 16th to August 1st A Brilliant Farce By Allan Bright Sponsored By Pickering Village Motors.com ALL USED CARS UNDER $10,000 www.usedcarsintoronto.net Visit our ON-LINE SHOWROOM @ GOOD CREDIT? If you’ve always wanted to have a pot drawer in the kitchen or shelves that would easily slide out in the pantry, that dream can now become a reality. Shelf Conversions launched in North America in 2000, and they design, build and install custom made Glide-Out™ shelves in existing cabinets and pantries. Previously, this unique type of shelving had to be ordered at the same time as the cabinets. They are the only company in Canada that will design, build and install Glide-Out shelving. Made from earth-friendly Baltic birch and top quality hardware, these shelves improve organization and storage. The shelves are designed to move in and out effortlessly, yet are strong enough to hold up to 100 pounds. “It’s the absolute top of the line for glide-out shelving, and it’s still very affordable,” says Frank Daniels, owner of Ontario Shelf Conver- sions. Having glide out shelves is like having a drawer within a cupboard. Everything is easy to reach and all of the space can be utilized. “Seniors absolutely love these shelves,” says Frank. “They make it incredibly easy to get at things in the lower cupboards.” Easy access is not limited to kitchen cabinets. The Glide-Out shelves have been installed in buffets, sideboards and islands. “We’re very flexible, we can even install the shelves in pieces of furniture,” says Frank. Many kitchens also have L-shaped cabinets, which are tricky to reach. “We do have a solution for blind corner cabinets,” says Frank. “Our Glide-Out shelving allows you to maximize your cabinet space and puts everything within reach.” Shelf Conversions has a huge selection of storage solutions, includ- ing the popular Glide-Out trash bins, Glide-Out tray bins and two-tiered Glide-Out shelves that fit under sinks and around drain pipes. The purchase and installation of Glide-Out shelves qualifies for the Home Renovation Tax Credit. Shelf Conversions offers a lifetime warranty on both parts and labour. Hughes, a pianist who has toured and performed with the likes of Rick James, Rough Trade, Murray McLaughlin and jazz greats such as Billy Cobham and Marcus Miller, co-founded Toron- to’s Beaches International Jazz Festival. The Sutton resident has been teaching music for 10 years and for the first time is running a camp that combines the out- doors, horses and music in one inspiring and creative package. It’s for young people aged 10 to 18 years. “Don’t be afraid to explore,” is the message he wants to con- vey. “There are no wrong notes. I’m not going to tell anybody that that’s wrong.” The two camps are July 27 to Aug. 1 and Aug. 3 to 8 at Pleasure Valley, on Brock Road in south Uxbridge Township. Hughes has a long association with the place, stretching back 20 years, and is there often, riding. For a time he lived on the grounds at the invitation of the late Gary Convery, who owned and ran Pleasure Valley for 25 years. He discovered horses as a young teen- ager and, while his parents didn’t want him to ride, he’d sneak away to a stable in Scarborough, where he grew up, just hanging around and learning all about horses. “I loved it; I took to it,” he says. “And from then on I was hooked.” Hughes has lined up some extraordinary talent for the camp, including percussionist Rick Lazar of Samba Squad, who’s leading a free Samba drum workshop for 10 to 18 year olds from 1 to 5 p.m. on July 28. Space is limited and you can register at 905-722-4571. Also working with students will be saxophone great Larry Bodner, among others. This isn’t a camp for kids to learn to play an instrument. It’s for young people who have had at least two years of formal musi- cal training on their instrument of choice and who, after countless hours of practice, are ready to find their own voice in music. “This is totally creative; this is a creative camp,” Hughes says. “These kids want to learn how to write and improvise.” It’s a camping camp, too, and Hughes says “we’re going to spend most of our time outside.” The students will sleep in large, 10-man tents, bringing their own sleeping bags and pillows. “They’ll cook over an open fire, clean up after themselves,” Hughes says. “They’ll experience ruggedness.” Riding is optional and those who do not wish to can substitute hik- ing. Either way, for one hour each day, students will do one or the other and will be asked to write a short piece about the experience. Just 20 students are being accepted in each of the two camps and Hughes envisions two kinds of young musicians helping one other: those who read music but don’t know much about impro- visation, and those who excel at improvisation but can’t read music. He says there will likely be another camp next summer. The camp is $525 for the five days and nights. Which makes for an interesting next couple of games as the Jr. C series unfolds. Down one game to zero in the best-of-five after losing to the Patriots 5-3 in Pickering on Monday, the Shamrox faced a 2-0 deficit just two minutes into Wednesday’s second game at the Recreation Complex in Bowmanville. But they came back with eight unanswered goals, including three in each of the first and second periods, and two more in the third before the Patriots closed out the scoring, resulting in a convincing 8-3 victory to tie the series. Game 3 goes at the Pickering Recreation Complex tonight at 8 p.m. Shamrox coach Randy Richards said that his first-year club had high expectations com- ing into the post season, and weren’t content with a strong regular season and second place in the East Division. “It’s been a long road since the beginning of the season,” he said of the journey. “About halfway through, guys were buying into what we were trying to do. When we beat Peterbor- ough at the beginning of June, they started to believe they could compete with anybody.” After riding high following a win in the series opener, the mood was predictably sub- dued around the Patriots’ dressing room fol- lowing Wednesday’s loss as they searched for answers as to what went wrong. “We just didn’t come to play,” said GM Rob McDonald, whose team finished third in the East, six points back of the Shamrox. “Any time you give up four shorthanded goals in a game, you are not going to win. I don’t know what went wrong. I don’t know why we weren’t prepared to play.” Stefan Diachenko had a five-point night for the Shamrox, scoring once and adding four helpers, while Dylan Pitchforth scored once and added three assists. Trevor Munce scored two, with singles coming from Taylor Meraw, Zach Holub, Garrett Williams and Ryan McCrory. For the Patriots, Gareth Gibson, Todd Naka- suji and George Jimas accounted for the goal scoring. With the series now reduced to a best of three, tonight’s third game is pivotal. “It’s going to take discipline, a heck of a lot better power play and playing tighter defence,” said McDonald, listing key factors for the Patriots to prevail. Richards expects his Shamrox team to con- tinue to press and force the play and draw on past experience in big games. “These guys have been to a lot of provin- cials, so they know what it takes and what it’s like,” he said. Game 4 goes Monday in Clarington, and if a fifth and deciding game is needed, it will also be in Clarington on Tuesday, with an 8 p.m. start for both. In the other East division semifinal, heavily- favoured Peterborough, which finished first with a 15-1-0 record, beat fourth-place Kings- ton (5-12-0) by a 12-5 score in Game 1. JR. C PLAYOFF LACROSSE Patriots look to regroup RON PIETRONIRO / METROLAND BOWMANVILLE -- George Jimas (21), of the West Durham Patriots, hacked at the arm of Zach Spicer, of the Clarington Shamrox, during Game 2 of their Jr. C East Division semifinal series played Wednesday in Bowmanville. The Patriots lost 8-3, and are now tied 1-1 head- ing into Game 3 tonight in Pickering. Mariya Yavorskaya, of Russia, out- pointed Watpool 15-3 in the gold-medal bout. Watpool is the Canadian 81kg national champion. Next up for the women’s national team is the Continental Championships in Newark, New Jersey from Aug. 25- 28. HOCKEY Keith Primeau finds gig in ECHL LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- Keith Primeau continues to broaden the hori- zons of his post-hockey-playing career. Already the owner and operator of the Durham Hockey Institute and member of the Whitby Fury owner- ship group, the Whitby native has been announced as the new special assistant to the general manager and director of player development with the Las Vegas Wranglers of the East Coast Hockey League. Primeau’s duties will include player recruiting, scouting, player evaluation and assessment and team administra- tion. Primeau’s NHL career spanned 15 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, Hartford Whalers, Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers. He amassed 266 goals, 353 assists and 1541 pen- alty minutes in 909 regular season games before concussion problems forced an early retirement. That distinction was something he just couldn’t avoid at a recent Ontario Hockey Federation awards banquet. The Ajax resident was presented with the Offi- ciating Program Award, which recognizes an active involvement and acknowl- edges significant contribu- tions to the OHF officiating program. The honour was hum- bling for the veteran refer- ee. “I was shocked and sur- prised because it’s a pret- ty prestigious honour,” he says of receiving a letter in early June requesting his presence at the banquet to receive the award. “There’s lots of worthy candidates for this award and there’s some pretty impressive people who have won it over the years. I felt honoured to be in that class.” Wedlake worked his last game in March after years of wearing the stripes, starting out as a 15-year- old in house league and advancing to the OMHA and OHA, where he worked countless junior games in the area. Now, when September rolls around and pucks start dropping at the rinks, Wedlake won’t be the one with the whistle. “I’m probably going to,” miss it, he admits. “It’s the only thing I’ve done, for 35 years, dropping pucks and skating from September to March. I’m going to miss it. I know I am.” So, why walk away? “Refereeing is all about being very competitive and I’m a very competitive guy. I’m a big believer that if you can’t compete at the highest level, it’s unfair to stay around.” While he won’t be on the ice, his influence on the game will still be felt in an administrative capacity. He is doing some work for the OMHA as a supervisor and instructor for the offi- ciating program, and is in charge of the recertifica- tion committee.newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • July 17, 200918 AP Limit time outdoors when mosquitoes are most active (Between dusk and dawn) Cover up and wear light-coloured clothing Use insect repellent Limit time outdoors when mosquitoes are most active (Between dusk and dawn) Cover up and wear light-coloured clothing Use insect repellent durham region health department 1-888-777-9613 ext. 2188 or www.durham.cadurham region health department 1-888-777-9613 ext. 2188 or www.durham.ca www.newsdurhamregion.com Award-winning local news in Durham Region Breaking local news, daily news, sports and more.... MARKHAM -- The Ajax U10 Dynamite girls’ rep soccer team competed at one of the toughest competitions it has seen so far. Playing in the Toronto Cup in Markham, the Dynamite girls did not lose a game until penalty kicks got the best of them in the final game. The Dynamite opened by cruising to an 11-0 win against Polonia Bengals from the Windsor area. A harder- fought game by Olympique CRSA from Quebec made more of a challenge for the Dynamite squad which pre- vailed with a 4-2 victory. On Sunday, the Dixie Storm came out strong in hopes of knocking the Dyna- mite out of the tournament. A 4-2 win by the Dynamite secured a birth into the play- offs. The semifinal match pit- ted Burlington against the Dynamite. A second-half goal was all that was need- ed for the Dynamite to move on. Unionville Milliken and Ajax Dynamite, two top SOCCER Ajax U10 Dynamite faced tough competition in tournament teams in the U10 girls divi- sions, competed for the gold medal. In the first half, Unionville scored and Dynamite tied it up. The second half saw the same with Unionville scoring and Dynamite come back for the tie. The final whistle blew, and it was the dread- ed penalty kicks. The Dyna- mite were only able to score on one out of four chances while Unionville secured the win with three out of four. Coach Michelle White commented on the game, “This was by far the tough- est tournament that we have ever played in. There were top teams that did not even come out of their pool to qualify for the playoffs. I am happy with my team’s play. It was a hard loss in the finals to Unionville as this is the first time that Union- ville had beaten us in three years. I’m very fortunate to have 14 hard-working play- ers and a very dedicated staff of coaches.” Team members are: Lind- say Arnott, Courtney Corre- ia, Julia Snow, Karly Paxton, Fallon Rodrigues, Nicole White, Nicole Dodge, Tona- ya Blackstock, Milan Dan- ford, Emily Gauvreau, Parys Kerr, Alexis Ferreira, Kris- tien Lindo, and Sinead Kap- pel. The team is coached by Michelle White and assisted by Roland Chow, Stephen Lindo and Linda Correia. Auctions Death Notices In Memoriams PICKERINGADVERTISING FEATUREDurham Windows and Doors Brings Mobile Showroom To Your Door Wayne Hutchison brings to the replacement window and door business a new and long overdue feature. It’s a Mobile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. “The day is gone when you carried some brochures and a sample window to a customer’s home,” explains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window samples.” When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom which you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl windows which you’re free to operate and you’ll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. “After being in this business for 26 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All Vinyl Window Designs windows come with Low E Glass which filters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the summer and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Wayne would also like his customers to know that he does all of the estimates personally, eliminating the cost of a salesperson. Durham Windows and Doors also does all of its own installations, which ensures that every customer gets a high quality job done at the best possible price. After being down 6-0, safety Randall Inniss broke up what was a sure touchdown late in the first quarter which held the Knights to a field goal and a score of 9-0. During a key drive in the sec- ond quarter, quarterback Car- men Scala was able to connect with Marco Mertsis for a 25-yard reception which was key to set- ting up a short 4-yard TD run by Sean Seecharan. The half ended with the Dol- phins narrowing the score to 9- 7. Key defensive plays from Bran- don Misseri and the rest of the tough Dolphins defense kept the Knights scoreless in the second half and gave the Phins a chance for the come-from-behind win. The game-winning drive for the Dolphins ended with Cordel Clarke receiving a touchdown pass from Curtis Inniss in the third quarter. The win was a true effort by the entire team. This Sunday, the Dolphins will travel to Hamilton’s McMaster University to take on the east- ern division-leading Burlington Stampeders. SUBMITTED PHOTO PICKERING -- Cordel Clarke, of the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins Junior Varsity SCOFL team, caught one of multiple passes during a game against the Clarington Knights on July 12.
