Canadian Auto Worker members from across Ontario descended on Queen’s Park, worried about their pensions should General Motors and Chrysler file for bankruptcy. Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty recently stated the provincial Pension Benefits Guaran- tee Fund (PBGF) doesn’t have enough money to cover the pensions of retired autoworkers. WHITBY -- A judge has turned down the volume on videotapes at a hearing for an admitted sex offender after a complaint from police officers that graphic evidence is too disturbing. Ontario Court Justice Paul Bellefontaine ruled Wednesday that spectators who want to hear audio of tapes showing the abuse of children will do so by using digital head- phones. His direction came after a sergeant with the Durham Regional Police indicat- ed the audio was upsetting to cops working security in the Whitby courtroom. The judge indicated the move would also spare court staff from hearing the audio, which, until Wednesday afternoon, had been broadcast through speakers in the court. Justice Bellefontaine ruled earlier that spectators would not see video mon- itors, but could listen to audio from the tapes as they were played. The evidence is part of a hearing for Michael Ross Stratton, who on Monday pleaded guilty to several counts of sexu- ally assaulting children. The 41-year-old Whitby man was arrested in June of 2006. During a search of Mr. Stratton’s Rose- dale Drive home, Durham police seized dozens of videotapes, some of which doc- ument Mr. Stratton’s abuse of young girls. Over two days this week, the Crown has played some of those tapes, many of them showing Mr. Stratton abusing a child he has admitted to molesting over a four-year period. The sound track is horrific; the girl cries and pleads with Mr. Stratton to leave her alone while he insists she comply with his demands, alternately threatening and praising the child. It has proven too much for some specta- tors, who seem able to tolerate the audio for only short periods before they rise and leave the courtroom. In evidence heard Wednesday, the 12- year-old girl could be heard attempting to fight off Mr. Stratton, screaming at him to stop. “I am better than this,” the child says, “I will do everything I can to stop you.” “You’re not gonna get me in trouble, are you?” Mr. Stratton can be heard saying. “I might,” the girl replies. The hearing continues in Whitby. COURTS Judge turns down volume at sex offender hearing newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 24, 20094 AP 621 Kingston Rd., (Just West of Whites Rd.) Residents pleased with Pickering council’s decision to support purchase BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- It was all smiles at Pickering City Hall Monday night after Whitevale residents received good news from council. The community recently learned Whitevale United Church will soon go up for sale. The biggest worry: that the 125-year-old church could be sold into pri- vate hands and no longer be available for public use. So, the Whitevale and District Residents’ Associa- tion formed a rescue group, Save Whitevale Village Church, with the intention to purchase it. Longtime resident Gordon Willson presented the plans and asked for council’s support. To their surprise, Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson introduced a motion that council provide a $20,000 grant to help them with their operating costs. “There seems to be a perceptible wish out there for our efforts to rescue our church to succeed,” Mr. Will- son said in an e-mail. And after Mayor Dave Ryan ensured the group will receive the money only upon successful purchase of the property, council supported the motion. Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson said the initiative shows the great quality of life in Whitevale, as well as council’s support of heritage buildings. “I think this is a great message to send to Whitevale (and) all of Pickering,” he said. The church had been operating alongside two other churches as a three-point charge under York Presby- tery until they amalgamated into one in 2004, with services running mainly out of Zion-Cedar Grove United Church in Markham. But Whitevale United youth leader Ann E. Ward and others persuaded York Presbytery to keep Whitevale’s doors open for public use. They created Kids.stage, which held a number of concerts, plays and fundraisers by youth, due to the great acoustics. The community held a number of events, such as corn roasts, rummage sales and craft- ing at the church throughout the year. However, word got out in late 2008 the church would soon go up for sale, and Kids.stage performed for the last time in December. Residents have met numerous times over the past few weeks, working desperately to find a solution. “It’s been the most intense three weeks I can remember for many years,” Mr. Willson said, adding the entire community has worked hard. Around 60 people even attended one meeting. The residents’ association hasn’t yet been informed of an asking price for the church, but expects to have an idea later this week. Mr. Willson is hopeful the resi- dents’ association will have an edge regarding the bid since it represents the host community. The Residents Association hopes the building can operate under a not-for-profit status and would host events, which have proven to bring in about $12,000 per year over the past five years. The group has also been in contact with Ajax-Pickering MP Mark Holland and is hopeful it can qualify for some federal funding, since Whitevale will celebrate its 125th anniversary next year. Councillors vote overwhelmingly in favour of U.S.-based Covanta Energy Environmental work on $235-million project almost complete BY KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- The Region has taken another step to an incinerator being built in Clarington. With a 17-to-7 vote on Wednes- day, Durham councillors approved Covan- ta Energy Corpo- ration as the ‘pre- ferred vendor’ to design, build and operate the ener- gy-from-waste facility. The incinera- tor, if built, car- ries a price tag of $235.76 million to build. Durham is in the final stages of an environmental assessment on the proposed facility. The provincial environment min- istry has the final say on if the facil- ity is built. “Regional council has now approved the report allowing the Region to move forward with an Early Works Agreement with the preferred vendor,” Regional Chairman Roger Anderson said. “This will allow the required work to be done to finalize the environmental assessment. This is another key mile- stone in the Durham/York Residual Waste Study.” While the assessment is almost com- plete, Durham is also looking for landfill space to carry the Region over until the incinerator is built. A tender is to close in three weeks, in which the Region is seeking to dump waste for at least three years, said works commissioner Cliff Curtis. “Even if this (incinerator) process is successful, it won’t be until 2013 before the energy-from-waste will be built,” Mr. Curtis said in an interview. Durham currently ships its trash to a Michigan landfill, but the state has said it will close off the border for trash next year. Whitby Councillor Joe Drumm opposed awarding the contract to Covanta, saying the company has an “abysmal record” in labour relations. Pickering Councillor Rick Johnson supported hiring the company, saying, “Our public has said no to landfill. Three (provincial) governments have tried to site a landfill in our community and our public has said no.” He visited a Covanta facility in Flori- da last year and “I didn’t hear anybody against it.” The only change to the recommenda- tion councillors made was to require a full staff presentation be part of a public information session being held in Clar- ington on May 12. In selecting Covanta, the Region is also going to spend another $2.9 million, including $2 million to consultants, to help finish the assessment. The remaining money goes to Covan- ta to come up with architectural designs for the outside of the incinerator, and to negotiate with the ministry of environ- ment on required certificates. Mr. Curtis told councillors a Certificate of Approval has to be negotiated with the Province before construction work can start. All content copyright Editorial Opinions GOVERNMENT FOCUS Priorities need to change To the editor: Can someone explain to me why our government has no problem supporting young, and I mean young, women who get pregnant not once, but twice or more, who have never worked, have no intention of working, and have their boyfriends living with them who pay no support? Yet retired GM workers are living with the fear of having their pensions taken away after working all their adult lives. Where is the fairness here? I personally am fed up with supporting these women who think it is their right to have children and not work when we have so many young couples working and strug- gling to live and limit the number of chil- dren they have because they can’t afford another child. There is something very wrong with our social services system and has been for a very long time. Marjorie Seymour Pickering FORCE OF LAW Legislation for pensions OK, just needs to be enforced To the editor: Re: Tougher legislation needed in wake of GM problems, editorial, April 15. There were a number of problems with the editorial which I will address. First, it is stated: “GM did not keep up with funding its pension requirements adequately.” GM was keeping up with ade- quately funding the pension fund until the Rae government in 1992, for whatever rea- son, allowed GM to reduce the amount it was mandated to pay to keep the pensions protected at the perceived level. Second, the editorial states: “There has to be a tightening of pension law to make sure companies and workers who belong to pension plans are keeping those plans healthy.” The pension laws are fine, they just have to be followed with no variances allowed, which our provincial government allowed. The workers had and still have no way to keep the plan healthy. Third, it says, “It’s time to rewrite the laws to make sure companies and workers do what’s in their own best interests so that short-term pain ensures we all have long- term gain.” No rewrite is required and the workers had no part or no say in this whole debacle. It was between GM and the pro- vincial government. Obviously those two parties got something that was in their best interests, while the workers were left out in the cold and now stand to lose the pension that they were constantly being told would be there that they earned after working 30- 40 years for the company. Pat Drumm Courtice AUTO SECTOR GM worker feels betrayed To the editor: I am a GM worker at the truck plant and have been there for 24 years. I have always worked very hard in there. And I am very conscientious in doing my work, as does everyone else who works in there. Now the company announced they were shutting down the truck plant and a few weeks later we got the JD Power Award. The CEO of GM, Rick Wagoner, admit- ted to making some bad choices. For this he was rewarded with a $23-million pack- age and was shoved out the door. We work- ers have always done our jobs and done them well and his mistakes had nothing to do with our quality or productivity. And yet we possibly will lose our pensions and our jobs because the company is in finan- cial difficulties. Let’s see. Do you think they could have used that $23 million to put into the pension fund for the workers who have done nothing but build them an extraordi- narily good product? And all my life, I thought the only people that could be wrong most of the time yet keep their jobs were the weathermen. Who would have thought? Dee McMaster Whitby Proportional pension bailout is proper response They came by the thousands to give Premier Dalton McGuinty a piece of their collective mind on Thursday afternoon. Members of the Canadian Auto Work- ers, retirees, their spouses and those laid off and deathly afraid for the future of their pensions, jumped on buses for Queen’s Park to tell the premier they were damn mad and weren’t going to take it any more. They spoke up loudly and made it clear they aren’t happy with a situation that could see retirees out in the cold, with pensions cut drastically in value should General Motors and Chrysler go bankrupt. The government-backed pen- sion insurance fund, which is privately financed by the province’s companies, has nowhere near enough money to look after GM or Chrysler retirees. And that has everyone in panic mode. Thus the need for the Queen’s Park rally and ques- tions and demands for the premier. There are just two key questions worth asking and which beg for answers: Was the premier listening to this large group? And what should he and the government do about their concerns? It’s hard to know what the premier will say to the first question because he wasn’t at Queen’s Park on Thursday. But this is a very serious problem with peo- ple, at the most vulnerable point in their lives, facing a bleak future. Since the Province allowed GM to underfund its contribution to the pension insurance fund back in the 1990s, retirees will want to know what the Province’s plan will be going forward now. At present, it appears the premier has no concrete plan to replace the pen- sion income should GM and Chrysler go under and their pensions disappear. He has gone on the record saying there isn’t enough public funding to replace the pensions. And, no doubt, the pre- mier would face a nasty public back- lash from many taxpayers across Ontar- io if he promised to fully replace any lost pension income from GM and Chrysler workers left out in the cold if bankruptcy struck. But there comes a time when the Prov- ince must decide that it has to do the right thing. GM and Chrysler workers fully expected to retire with a pension. If the Province made a deal with GM to allow the auto giant to underfund its plan, it bears a responsibility to workers to be there when they are most vulnera- ble. At least some form of pension bail- out for a portion of their pensions is the proper thing to do. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 24, 20096 P WE THINK... email responses to newsroom@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 24, 20097 APPine Ridge www.gardengallery.ca 2215 Brock Road North, 905-683-5952 Mon-Fri 9-8 pm • Saturday 9-6 pm • Sunday 9-5 pm Hwy #401 Kingston Rd.Brock Rd.Pine Ridge N ALSO, Get on the list! Police say at roughly 12:40 a.m. they were called to Bissland Drive near Taunton and Salem roads in north Ajax after homeowners reported they saw the family minivan engulfed in flames. Durham police say the minivan was destroyed, but the fire did not spread to the home. The police helicopter, Air1, was dis- patched and officers saw the burning van and a vehicle speeding out of the neigh- bourhood. Police followed it as it sped through the area before heading north on Salem Road. They say it took a fast turn onto Taunton and drove over the centre median before eventually hitting a centre divider and spinning out of control. Officers in Air1 saw four men running in different directions from the vehicle. The helicopter followed one suspect onto Wamford Circle where police say the suspect hid under a parked car. A K-9 team was sent to the location and arrested the suspect. Nishanth Vijayakanthan, 23, of Monique Court in Markham, is charged with arson, failing to comply with pro- bation, failing to remain and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. Police are still looking for three more suspects. No description is available, but they say the fleeing vehicle narrowly missed colliding with other vehicles and police would like drivers to contact them as the investigation continues. The Town plans to improve the section of Rossland between Brock Road in Pickering and Westney Road in Ajax. As it stands, drivers must turn onto Church Street when travelling east-west on Rossland because the stretches of Rossland on each side of Church are not aligned. The realignment would run behind the Kinsmen Heritage Centre, located on Rob- ertson Drive, and through the soccer field next to the centre, bringing the new Ross- land closer to McKie Court, a residential street. The field would be lost, say Town staff, and a new bridge over Duffins Creek would be required. The estimated $10-million project would be done in two phases, with the realign- ment and Duffins bridge construction in 2012, and reconstruction between the Pickering boundary and Church Street and a bridge over Urfe Creek in 2013. Ajax did a safety review of the road in 2007 in the wake of two fatal accidents and the proposed construction would implement the long- term recommendations from the review. “The quantity of accidents is not that high, it’s the severity of accidents that has our attention,” said Carol Coleman, the Town’s manager of engineering, capital projects. The road improvements will also include sidewalks, a multi-use trail on the south side of Rossland and cycling lanes. Ultimately, the road would be widened to four lanes sometime in 2014 to 2017, but the Town is not recommending doing so in the first phase of the project. “It depends on how fast development happens in the area,” said Ms. Coleman. A half-dozen area residents spoke out against the project, citing increased traf- fic and noise, a decrease in property values and damage to the environment as their main concerns. They said the Town should be diverting traffic north to Taunton Road and Hwy. 7 and were adamant that Ross- land shouldn’t be widened. Ray Ristich, who said he lives in the Urfe Creek and Rossland area, collected 155 sig- natures on a petition against changes to the road. He said 96 per cent of the people he approached signed. “It’s disappointing that that beautiful nat- ural environment will be changed forever,” he said, adding that when going door-to- door he found opposition to the proj- ect not only among people who live in north Ajax, but along the waterfront too. The Town said it will include noise bar- riers as part of the design and is working with the local conservation authority to mitigate damage to the environment. Councillors approved moving ahead with the project unanimously at Mon- day’s community affairs and planning committee meeting. There were CAW members from St. Catharines, Oakville and Wind- sor for the event. Bill Czerewaty retired from the Oshawa GM plant on Oct. 1 last year, after 31 years. “We’re trying to get a guaran- tee from the government and McGuinty,” Mr. Czerewaty said. “We’re hoping to send a strong message to the government.” Bill Gutsell made the trip with his son Dave, both GM retirees. Bill Gutsell retired 23 years ago, after more than 37 years at the plant. “I want to keep our pensions, I guess. I’m worried. I’m too old to get other work,” Bill said. Dave Gutsell retired in Decem- ber, the third generation of Gut- sells who worked at the Oshawa facility. Ted Murphy, president of Local 222 for seven years, said, “The pen- sions weren’t started yesterday. It was started in 1950. If the com- pany had funded it properly, we wouldn’t be in the situation we’re in today.” Jerry Kortekaas retired two years ago, after 35 years as an industrial millwright. “We want to make sure our pensions are protected. The government has a fund that’s sup- pose to protect our pensions and it appears they don’t want to live up to the agreement,” Mr. Kortekaas stated. “If it happens to us, it could happen to every other corporation in the country.” Trish McAuliffe and her hus- band were laid off from GM’s Windsor plant in 2004 and moved to Oshawa. She was laid off from Oshawa in December and she might not qualify for a pension. “It’s possible I won’t see anything as a result. For 20 years, I’ve been chasing a pension,” Ms. McAuliffe said. “I’m here because I’m mad, I’m very angry. There’s govern- ment neglect of the middle class all over.” Former CAW president Buzz Hargrove was at the rally and said in an interview that autoworkers “paid into it. We’re not asking for anything else. We only want what we paid into it.” Asked if the government will lis- ten to the workers’ demands, he stated, “I don’t think so. For me, it’s the insensitivity of the government to the people.” Andrea Horwath, the new leader of the Ontario NDP, was joined by most of her caucus on stage, say- ing, “We’re seeing workers suffer and suffer greatly.” Thousands of jobs have been lost and “Premier McGuinty has no response at all,” Ms. Horwath said. “It’s also a pension crisis.” The PBGF “is broke and been underfunded for quite some time,” she said. “Premier McGuinty refus- es to make changes and he’s made each of you vulnerable.” Mr. Lewenza said the rally “isn’t about autoworkers. It’s about dig- nity, about respect, about pen- sions. We didn’t create the global financial crisis. We are a victim.” IT’S from page 1 QUEEN’S PARK RALLY ‘It’s about dignity, about respect, about pensions’: Lewenza Page 6 - Today’s editorial WATCH the video story @ newsdurhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 24, 200910 AP SUMMER CAMP Mountain Biking Low Ropes *NEW* Climbing Wall High Ropes *New Elements* and more DAY CAMP July-August - 9am to 4pm For more information, call 905-649-2058 Uxbridge, ON Open House Sunday May 3 rd 10am-2pm R.S.V.P. by May 1st www.ski-lakeridge.com CHLOE STANOIS Special to the News Advertiser AJAX -- Hallways were hushed at Ajax High School as students used silence to highlight discrimination against the gay community by participating in a Day of Silence last week. The Day of Silence is a national youth event which protests how lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people are not always welcome to speak out about who they are due to harassment, prejudice and dis- crimination. The silence raises awareness and aims to make students empathetic and tolerant of others in their society, say organizers. “It’s a pretty neat environment during the day, there is a hush that overpowers any negative voices that might be out there,” said Erin Crawford, teacher at Ajax who organized the event with another teacher, Tory Bedard. The Day of Silence started 10 years ago and Ajax High School is participating for its third year. With approxi- mately 350 students wearing a sticker stating they are silent and 300 students wearing a sticker that showed their support. Ajax has the most students participat- ing out of all schools in Durham. At the beginning of the school day, students who wished to participate met up, received a sticker of their choice and a piece of paper explaining why they are silent. Then, as a group, they counted down to silence. Both teachers participated in the day despite the fact they both had classes to teach. “I write notes if I need to and I show them the statement of understanding,” said Ms. Bedard. One student said she thought the Day of Silence was effective. “I participated in the silence because it is a good way to take a stand against homophobia,” she said. Others felt more should be done than just an annual event. “I feel like being silent for a day does not help the gay community at all, people already know the struggles gays go through,” said one student. Overall, organizers said the day was a success. “It’s challenging to be silent in the classroom but that’s part of the point of the day, to recognize how difficult it is for individuals who are forced into silence due to harassment and discrimination,” said Ms. Crawford. As part of this IEA, an Odour Control Strategy was developed, which included construction of an Odour Control Facility (OCF) at Altona Road. In response to Durham Council’s resolution from March 11, 2009 to relocate the OCF, York Region is engaging and consulting further with Durham residents that live within the project study area on measures to minimize odour along the proposed alignment of the Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer. At the upcoming Public Information Forum, York Region will be presenting information on the assessment of alternative OCF sites, the identifi cation of recommended sites, and additional mitigation measures proposed for the recommended sites. Your participation is an important part of the process and we welcome your input. York Region is committed to listening to and addressing residents’ concerns and fi nding an odour management solution that balances measures to protect the natural environment with the needs of the community. Council passed a motion to encourage the Prov- ince to create legislation that makes every eli- gible person an automatic organ donor upon death unless they have specifically opted out. The motion coincides with National Organ and Tissue Donation Week. “Such legislation would cut a long-standing chronic shortage of organ donors across the prov- ince and save many lives,” Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles said in his motion. According to media reports, nearly 1,700 Ontar- ians and 4,000 Canadians are waiting for organ transplants, he said. Also, 140 to 250 people die each year in Canada while on the waiting list. Coun. Pickles also pointed out a recent Toron- to Star and Angus Reid poll found 64 per cent of Ontarians would support automatic donor legis- lation. Mayor Dave Ryan supports organ donation and increasing awareness of the shortage, but not automatic donating. “To legislate reverse billing on an individual’s body just doesn’t sit well with me,” he said. MOTION PASSES Pickering supports automatic organ donation PICKERING -- City council has asked the minister of Natural Resources to investigate illegal hunting that’s been reported in Pickering. Signs of hunting and poaching have been found recently in the Rouge Park, where hunting is not permitted. The space “is considered a sanc- tuary for nature and the human spirit,” Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell said in her motion. Although not permitted in Pickering, hunting traps and equipment have been found in various places throughout the city, such as Whitevale, Coun. O’Connell said. The incidents have occurred outside of the Province’s open hunting season, which violates Ontario’s hunting regulations. Coun. O’Connell said some people are afraid to go into the Rouge Park without wearing orange, the colour hunters dress in to avoid being shot. Council unanimously supported the motion, which has been sent to Minister Donna Cans- field to investigate and establish a protocol for enhanced enforcement. A copy has also been sent to nearby municipali- ties and members of provincial parliament. Rebecca Tomlin, a Durham Region public health nurse, says inactivity and high-calo- rie foods play a key role in why children are obese. “Children are spending too much time in front of the TV, computer and playing video games,” Ms. Tomlin says. “Children should only be hav- ing two hours of TV time each day. Instead of playing video games, parents should try to get their children to play outside or play with the family pet, or go as a family for a walk or play a sports game as a family,” Ms. Tomlin says. Some health problems obese children are at risk for are type 2 diabetes and fatty liver dis- ease. “A new thing that we are look- ing into that some obese chil- dren are getting is fatty liver disease. We are working with the Canadian Liver Foundation to gather more information on liver disease,” says Andrienne Baltadjian, a Durham Region public health nutritionist. She also says that children are not getting enough fruits, vege- tables or dairy products. The comments came after Ontario doctors called for cal- orie labelling on cafeteria and fast-food menus to help children and parents make informed choices about the food they eat. “One way that parents can get children to eat healthy is by get- ting the children more involved in making the healthy meals. Just trying to make meal time a more positive and fun time. Also parents should eat healthy meals in front of their children and families should have more meals together,” Ms. Baltadjian says. Visit www.dietitians.ca to track a day’s food and activity choices and compare them to the guide- lines laid out by Health Canada. Still’ runs until May 9 in Ajax BY MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com AJAX -- Spanning almost three centuries and several locales, Ken Bond’s Waltzing... Still reflects his interest in spirituality. The award-winning play is on the StoneCircle Theatre stage in Ajax until May 9. “Buddhism and reincarnation and karma are things that reso- nate with me,” says the theatre company’s founder and artistic director. “It has to do with differ- ent people I have met in my life ... there’s an instant affinity. You meet somebody and start talk- ing with them and it’s as if you’ve known them for years.” The question is, why? Is it sim- ply, Bond questions, that you have good chemistry or common interests? Or is it something more profound, namely that you have met before, perhaps had a rela- tionship in the past, maybe the very distant past? “Soulmates is at the heart of the notion and of Waltzing... Still,” Bond says. The two main characters in his play, written about 10 years ago, are of two minds on the issue. Wendel believes there’s no such thing, that when we die we’re gone and that’s it. Rachel thinks other- wise, that reincarnation is who we are and what we’re about. The play moves from the early 1700s into the late 1990s. And there are geographic shifts as well, with incarnations of Wendel and Rachel in France, Ireland, Sudan and Canada. “We see their souls moving, not just through time, but geographi- cally,” he says. But they’re not always together. And the lives they lived in the past aren’t the same as the ones they’re living now. Eventually, through his relationship with Rachel, Wendel becomes a believer in reincarnation. And the two are able to establish the fulfilling rela- tionship that had eluded them in the past. “Wendel and Rachel are the ones that are able to reconcile the issues of the past,” Bond says. There are other themes in the play: the spirit’s ability to over- come tragedy, how old age doesn’t have to be an ending, but can become a beginning, the heart- break behind a love that’s lost. Bond acknowledges it’s heavy stuff. “The audience will be chal- lenged, and I don’t like to scare an audience away with that word, but they will,” he says. Encouraged by a friend, he entered the work in a new play contest at Bramalea Live The- atre. Waltzing... Still won the best, unpublished play prize and was produced at the Lester B. Pear- son theatre in Brampton in 2005. The judge in her comments also referred to its challenging nature, but obviously felt it was one worth taking on. “This is a lovely, beautifully writ- ten play that is tightly focused, well researched, and has a very clear through-line,” Kathy Row- land said. “It was interesting to see how well the writer merged symbol- ism with reality to produce a script that carries us on a jour- ney through the ages with a cou- ple who keep reconnecting at a soul level. It is entrancing and will keep an audience enthralled from beginning to end.” The play features Ajacians Carol LeBreton as Rachel, Lanie Ander- son as Martha and Yvonne, and Hilary Laan as Ada, Aunt Gladys and Gwennie. Steve Foote, of Port Hope, is Wendel, Kevin Horton, of Markham, is Jared, Erik and Uncle James, and Port Perry’s Dave Ellis is Andre, Da and Remorse. Picker- ing’s Sharon J. Avis plays the harp. THEATRE Journey of souls at StoneCircle RON PIETRONIRO / METROLAND AJAX -- From left, Steve Foote, Carole LeBreton and Dave Ellis rehearse a scene from Waltzing... Still, performed through May 9 at the Village Theatre at 22 Sherwood Rd. W., Ajax. Evening performances are at 8 p.m. There is a 2 p.m. matinee on April 26. Mike Ruta Entertainment Editor mruta@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comEntertainment VARIETY SHOW Spotlight on young talents Magic of Youth in Ajax on May 2 AJAX -- Some of the most talent- ed young people in Durham are performing in Ajax. Dave Ryan, a Pickering Village United Church parishioner, has assembled them for The Magic of Youth, a night of music, song, dance and comedy at the church on May 2. Ryan, who often jokingly refers to himself as “the other Dave Ryan” to distinguish himself from the Pickering mayor, says this will be the fourth and last fundraising show he will put on at the church as he might be moving out of the area after 20-plus years in Ajax. Ryan started acting at the age of 17 in St. Thomas, his hometown. As a Toronto resident, he “wrote and directed a lot of small shows” at his church there. After that he focused on work and raising a family, until a fortuitous meeting. “I met an old friend in the TV and movie business ... who was very active and introduced me to a director,” Ryan said. He started working as an extra in movies and on TV, learning a lot about directing, lighting and other behind-the-scenes stuff. “I got the bug again about four years ago,” Ryan said. “I thought, ‘The church needs money and there’s a lot of charities and there’s a lot of talent around’.” The Magic of Youth features classical pianist Ye Yuan, whom he heard performing at the Ajax library. Composer and guitarist Cy James and jazz pianist Justin James are also playing, in addition to many others such as stand-up comic Tim Nasiopoulos, soprano soloist Mariko Bown-Kai and jazz saxo- phonist Adisa Terry. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show are $15 for adults and $10 for students and available at the door. Kids under 10 are admitted free. Proceeds will go toward PVUC’s community work and to a United Church Youth effort to help youths in Tanzania with HIV/AIDS. The church is at 300 Church St. N. in Ajax. “We see their souls moving, not just through time, but geographically. Thank You Volunteers! A Sincere Thank You to All our Volunteers We couldn’t have done it without you National Volunteer Week, which will be held from April 19 to 25 this year with the theme “Volunteers, from compassion to action”, is the ideal moment to find a cause close to our hearts and contribute to its advancement. The theme chosen this year helps to remind us all that it is passion and love of humanity which inspire us to volunteer. Volunteers work enthusiastically in the knowledge that their actions are constructive and result in a ripple effect, their positive contributions spreading through their communities to build and strengthen them. What is so nice about volunteer work is that we can derive numerous benefits from it. First of all, volunteering allows us to meet many people from all walks of life, whether they are people wishing to help others or those who need our help. Volunteer work is, therefore, a marvellous opportunity for developing new relationships, exposing us to rewarding experiences as well as giving us the chance of creating lasting friendships. What’s more, feelings of well-being are enhanced, making us feel more positive on a daily basis. Even better, this sentiment resonates as much with the giver as it does with the recipient. Many different organizations are constantly in need of volunteers. So, all we have to do is choose a cause close to our hearts and contact the appropriate organization to offer our services. In this way we can participate in a collective effort to build and strengthen our respective communities and change our lives for the better. Caring and compassion within the community... ADVERTISING FEATURE Sports Brad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.com News Advertiser • April 24, 200926 P BY BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com AJAX -- The switch in venue from Pickering to Ajax isn’t the only change the Ajax-Pickering Rock will be undergoing this season. There will also be some changes to the roster. Jim Veltman, head coach of the Sr. B lacrosse club, was expected to make his final cuts last night, paring down the roster from the 28 run- ners who have been going through training camp workouts under his watch the past two weeks. While the core from last year’s team is expected to return, a lot of new faces have surfaced, which pleased the new bench boss. “It’s very encouraging,” said Velt- man of what he has witnessed thus far. “I see a lot of young players with a lot of energy and that’s what we want. There are going to be some changes to this year’s roster.” The number of hopefuls attend- ing camp is up dramatically from a year ago, when less than 20 attended the initial workouts. The increase in players this year makes it more difficult to earn a spot. “There’s competition all over the floor in terms of spots on the defense, offense and in goaltend- ing. It’s been a good atmosphere,” said Veltman. Veltman, an assistant with the team last season, is taking over the reigns from Paul St. John, who was the head coach the past six sea- sons. St. John has stayed on as an assistant, and maintained his GM duties as well. The two discussed prior to the training camp the kind of team they wanted to floor, and by all accounts, Veltman feels they will meet their target. “I want to run,” he said. “We sort of instilled that system last year when I was an assistant coach. We talked about that philosophy and we brought in a lot of younger play- ers to do that.” While some new faces are expect- ed to crack the lineup, the leader- ship group will remain intact. Mark Craig will return as captain, while Ian Harloff and Bill McLean will be assistants, said Veltman. “I’ve been asking them to really intensify training camp and be the role models for players and they have been doing a great job at that,” Veltman pointed out. “I have been very impressed with them so far.” The Rock have two practices this weekend and another Wednes- day before opening the season Sat- urday, May 2 in Oshweken. The home opener at the Ajax Commu- nity Centre is Friday, May 8 against Norwood. JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND Golden oldies PICKERING -- James McCrory, left, and Reno Pelletier battle for the puck in Pickering Oldtimers Hockey League tournament championship action at Don Beer Arena on the weekend. The league wrapped up the season with finals in the 35+ and 50+ age divisions. Changes ongoing theme for Rock SR. B LACROSSE TRAINING CAMP Pickering ringette team just misses out on gold PICKERING -- After going unde- feated in the regular season and winning the regional playoff, the Pickering Junior B ringette team was the favorite to win gold in the regional tournament. The girls went undefeated in the round robin finishing up with a 3-2 victory against Sun- derland, the team they would meet later in the battle for gold. Before the final, coach Bruce Carmichael reminded his team that Sunderland was the team that had been the most compet- itive during the season. And it was competitive again. Pickering jumped out to a 2- 0 score in the first, but watched that lead disappear as Sunder- land scored four unanswered goals. Pickering would score anoth- er to bring the score to within one, but even with their goal- tender on the bench, they could not crack the strong Sunderland defense, and had to settle for sil- ver. Afterwards Carmichael thanked his staff, Walter Fahey and Tim Palmeter, for their sup- port and trainer Faye Halbert for her dedication. He also expressed sincere gratitude to the players for their spirit, dedication and effort. “These are the greatest group of athletes that any coach could have the pleasure of working with,” he said. He also expressed thanks to the parents and CGI for their generous support. To win the regional playoff, Pickering defeated Oshawa 6- 0 with goalie Caitlyn Halbert earning the shutout. Team members are Emily Hartwell, Em Jesson, Lauren Fahey, Miranda Turner, Eliza- beth Carmichael, Emily Nich- olson, Sarah Palmeter, Krista Smith, Renay Lessey-Searles, Laura Nicholson, Avery Darrah, Mya Butler, and Caitlyn Halbert. The team staff is Walter Fahey, Tim Palmeter, Faye Halbert, Ann Carmichael and Bruce Carmi- chael. REGISTRATION Annandale hosts last event of the season BY JIM EASSON On Saturday, April 18 and Sunday April 19, Annan- dale hosted the annual Men’s Last Chance Bon- spiel. It was the last curling event for the Annandale season, and the skaters had use of the ice after the final curling games. The event was full with 32 teams, and 16 of them won their way to qualify for a return to Sun- day. Winning the event and collecting $600 was the Jim Thedorf team from Oshawa Curling Club over the Barry Moylan home team after a close game that Moylan led for most of the way. Michael Bryson won the second event and $300 over War- ren Leslie. The third event and $250 was captured by the David Brunelle team from Penetanguishine over Gerry Pinkney, and Blair Metrakos took fourth, col- lecting $200 competing against the Arnold Retz team. The Men’s Competitive League finished on April 14 with final games for each league. Winners in the play- off games for the six leagues A to F received cash prizes. Winning the club champi- onship in the A division was the team of Blair Metrakos, Andrew Klein, Brad Cowan and Scott March. The win was tight over the team of Warren Leslie, Alex Bian- chi, Tim March and Ray Zani. From April 14 to 19, the curling event for Team Glenn Howard was the Grey Power Players’ Champion- ship in Alberta. Team How- ard, with Pickering resident Richard Hart at vice, and the front end of Brent Laing and Craig Savill, were the defending champions, but unable to repeat.
