CRIME Two Ajax men charged, stolen guns recovered DURHAM -- Two Ajax men face more than 100 charges after Durham Regional Police recovered most of the guns stolen from an Ajax business. Members of the Durham Regional Police 19 Division executed a search warrant at an address on Falby Court in Ajax on Thursday and seized 16 firearms. The firearms, 19 long guns (rifles and shot- guns), along with ammunition, were stolen from locked gun cases in a business on Mackenzie Ave- nue sometime between the evening of Friday, April 10 and the early morning hours of Saturday, April 11. A 1999 white GMC Safari Van with the com- pany logo was also stolen. Several hours later, Durham police found the minivan at an apartment on Falby Court. Inside were two of the guns. Sev- enteen guns and the ammunition, however, were missing. One firearm is still outstanding and police are urging the public to come forward with any information on where it might be. Jonathan Allan, 29, of Falby Court, faces charges of careless storage of a firearm, 16 counts each of possession of firearm obtained by crime, an unlicensed person possessing an unregistered firearm, and possessing a firearm knowing its pos- session is unauthorized. He also facing four counts of failing to comply with probation. He was held for a bail hearing Derrick Bannister, 50, of Falby Court faces charges of careless storage of a firearm, 16 counts each of possession of a firearm obtained by crime, an unlicensed person possessing unregistered firearm, and possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized. He was released with a pending court date. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective-Constable Craig Willis of the 19 Division Criminal Investigations Bureau Property Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520, ext. 1926. Second arrest in Ajax swarming AJAX -- A second suspect has been arrested in the beating and robbery of an Ajax teen Tuesday night. An investigation was launched after the 17- year-old boy told Durham police he was swarmed and robbed by a group of young people in Notting- ham Park. The assailants punched and kicked the boy and robbed him of his possessions -- including his running shoes -- and his car, police said. Police arrested an 18-year-old Toronto man as he drove the car on Hwy. 401 in Toronto shortly after the robbery. And on Friday, police announced the arrest of a second suspect: Dexter Reese, 19, of O’Shea Crescent in Ajax, is charged with assault causing bodily harm and robbery. The investigation continues. Two charged as stolen equipment recovered AJAX -- Two men are facing charges after police recovered hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stolen construction equipment in Ajax. Nine skids steers and a highway tractor stolen in the GTA in late March were recovered April 9 at a property on Taunton Road, police said. The value of the equipment is estimated at $800,000. John Foote, 42, of no fixed address, and Savino Dipierro, 32, of Weston Road in Toronto, are charged with multiple counts of possession of stolen property. Suspect in two Durham robberies busted DURHAM -- Charges have been laid against a man believed to be responsible for heists at two Durham banks last week. The suspect is also linked to bank robberies in neighbouring jurisdictions, Durham police said. The man is charged with four robberies -- in Ajax, Pickering, Aurora and Burlington. Cops closed in on a suspect after a Scotia- bank branch on Westney Road in Ajax was robbed at about 1:20 p.m. Friday by a man who passed a teller a threatening note. At about 7 p.m. Friday, officers with Durham’s offender management unit, along with robbery detectives, went to a residence in Don Mills where they took a suspect into cus- tody. In addition to the Ajax robbery, the man was also charged with a heist at a Scotiabank on Kings- ton Road in Pickering last Tuesday. Charges were laid in other robberies earlier in April in Aurora and Burlington. Andrew Hayes, 39 of no fixed address, is charged with four counts of robbery and possession of stolen property. She was inspired to participate in the annual fundraising event, held across the country, because of her personal experi- ence with the disease. “I’ve had uterine cancer and my mother had breast cancer, so I feel really strongly about women’s cancers and I wanted to do something,” she said. Both she and her mother are cancer- free now and Ms. Henderson is ready to help others by participating in the Toron- to event, where funds will go to Princess Margaret Hospital for research, preven- tion and screening programs, education and other initiatives. “When I heard the advertising about the walk, I phoned up and asked if they would accept someone in an electric wheelchair and they said yes, we’d love to have you,” she said. Organizers will help her by provid- ing stops where she can charge up. Each charge will take 15 to 40 minutes. The walk will happen over two days on Sept. 12 and 13, but Ms. Henderson is looking to meet her $2,000 fundraising goal by June. So far, she said, she’s received a lot of support from her friends and family. “They can’t believe it, when I decided to do it. Before I registered, when I was thinking about it and talking to the coach- es, I didn’t tell anyone I was thinking of doing it until it was a positive thing and once I registered, I told everyone I knew,” she said. And now the long-time Ajax resident and past winner of the Ajax Civic Award is looking for support from her community. She will use her wheelchair to complete the 60K route. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 23, 20094 AP By Victor Fiume In the provincial government recent budget, began the process of harmonizing the PST and GST. Set to take eff ect on July 1st, 2010, this means we will be paying Provincial Sales Tax on more items, the largest being the labour used in the production of goods. Billed as revenue neutral—it is anything but. Using $4.3 billion of federal money, certain groups of Ontarians will receive a $1,000 payout. While all Ontarians will be hit by this new tax, no one will be harder hit than the new home buyer and to a lesser extent the resale home buyer. Th e huge amounts of additional tax dollars taken out of the pockets of home buyers will be used to off set other sectors; ergo the promise revenue neutrality. For buyers of new homes under $400,000 there is an exemption of 75 per cent of the tax, which will in eff ect keep the PST at the historic level of about two per cent of the cost of the home. PST is currently only paid on the materials that go into building a new home, not the labour or land component. If the price of the home is between $400,000 and $500,000, the exemption is reduced proportionately as you get closer to the upper end of the scale. If you purchase a home for more than $500,000, then you would pay the full 8 per cent, which is an additional $30,000 in PST. On a $450,000 home you will be paying an additional $15,000. So why would you care about anyone who can aff ord to purchase a $500,000 home? Because soon enough we will all be there. Th e current average price of a new home in Oshawa is about $360,000; in Whitby it is almost $400,000. Th e people buying these homes are not rich, they are middle class people. With all of the additional taxes, fees and levies that various levels of government add to the price of new homes our ability as builders to keep the price down has virtually been taken out of our hands. Of interest, when the Maritimes introduced harmonization a number of years ago they also had a sliding scale exemption for new homes. Incredulous as it may sound, new homes have since been added to the list of sin taxes out there along with booze and cigarettes. As provincial governments struggled to fi nd new sources of revenue they began to lower the threshold to the point where new homes purchasers pay the entire amount of PST on their new home purchase. So much for revenue neutral. How does all of this aff ect the resale market? First of all purchasers of resale homes will have to pay PST on the commission paid to the agent. Currently only GST is paid on the commission. On a $350,000 home, sold with a 5 per cent commission, it will mean an additional $1,400 to be paid on closing. Don’t forget everyone will now have to pay 8 per cent tax on the lawyer’s bill too. Th is is a relatively small amount until you consider the eff ect that higher new home prices will have on the price of resale homes. Th e selling price of resale homes closely mirrors the price of new homes. You can bet that as a $450,000 new home goes up in price by $15,000 so will the resale prices. It is estimated that the harmonization will bring in an additional $640 million to the provincial coff ers; that works out to $9,000 on average for each new home across the Province. Th e eff ects of this unprecedented tax grab will be to dampen an already diffi cult new home market. Th e new home building industry employs 325,000 Ontarians. It is by far the largest single industry in the Province; eclipsing even the auto sector. Precious dollars are being taken out of the pockets of home buyers only to be redistributed to prop up other sectors of the economy. One wonders where the tax dollars will come from once we have succeeded in decimating the home building industry. I guess at that point, for the fi rst time ever, builders will have their hands out looking for a bail out. Th e harmonization of the GST and PST will aff ect every resident of Ontario in some way. Th e harmonization of taxes on homes is all about adding unnecessary costs to homes and reducing aff ordability. It is irresponsible of both the Provincial and Federal Governments to put further hardships on homeownership. After all, housing is a basic need of life, but it would seem that we are intent on making home ownership a luxury. For those who are considering the purchase a new or resale home, you may want to consider making a move as soon as possible in order to avoid having to pay the extra taxes. Coupled with low interest rates and the current buyer’s market, now has never been a better time to buy! Mr. Mitchell-Gill’s client, who was 17 at the time of the inci- dent, is charged with aggravated assault and weapons offences. “The truth is you’re just making this stuff up on the stand, aren’t you?” Mr. Mitchell- Gill asked Mr. Geary. “Nope. Not at all, sir,” the witness replied. Mr. Geary has testified he was abducted by several young men, including the youth now on trial, and driven to the victim’s neighbourhood on Shoal Point Road on the night of Sept. 16, 2007, then forced to call the victim to lure him into an ambush. Mr. Mitchell-Gill had earlier pointed out to the witness that while he said at trial the youth and another young man got out of the car shortly before the shooting, he tes- tified in a preliminary hearing last year the youth remained in the car. “I may have made a mistake,” Mr. Geary said of his testimony last year. And when Mr. Mitchell-Gill noted that Mr. Geary told a judge last year that the accused youth wore a black hooded sweat- shirt, he has said at this trial the hoodie was red. “Maybe it was a black and red hoodie,” Mr. Geary suggested. A frustrated Mr. Mitchell-Gill suggested the young man’s testimony was “simply a load of garbage”. The trial, before Superior Court Justice Alexander Sosna and a jury, continues in Whitby. While spectators cannot see the images - - TV monitors have been turned away from the public gallery -- Justice Paul Bellefon- taine has ruled they can hear audio from the tapes. On Tuesday afternoon, prosecutor Kent Saliwonchyk played a lengthy record- ing of an encounter between Mr. Stratton, now 41, and a girl who says on the tape she is 12. When police arrested Mr. Stratton in June of 2006 they recovered from his home a duf- fle bag containing dozens of digital video tapes, some of which depict Mr. Stratton in sexual situations with children. The identi- ties of the victims are protected by a court order. On the tape Mr. Stratton can be heard speaking in a guttural growl, alternately bru- talizing and cajoling the child. The girl con- tinually begs Mr. Stratton to stop, sometimes screaming. At times, she weeps brokenly for extended periods. Throughout, Mr. Stratton speaks to the girl, promising to reward her for compliance or threatening to abandon her if she refuses. “I can’t have you around,” Mr. Stratton sud- denly announces. “Sorry.” The ultimatum seems to cause the girl dis- tress: “I want to be around,” she can be heard, apparently pleading, “but I’m just little.” The Crown has indicated its intention to apply to have Mr. Stratton declared a danger- ous offender. If that motion is successful he could be jailed indefinitely. The proceeding continues in Whitby. All content copyright Editorial Opinions My children have a very different rela- tionship with their grandparents than I did mine. When I was a kid, going to Gramma’s house was not really something I looked forward to. It was more something to be endured. I think things might have been vastly dif- ferent had my granddad not died when I was very little. He was a pretty fun guy. He liked a laugh and he liked the occasional snoot full. A few years in the trenches of Flanders gave him some perspective that my grandmother never got. I think a month or two in no-mans-and might’ve loosened her up a bit. Don’t get me wrong. My gramma was a nice lady. She was always kind and gen- erous and I know she loved us dearly, but I would never have described her as fun. I don’t think I ever saw her laugh really hard. Which was a shame, because, as she was quite fond of proclaiming in her latter years to anyone who would listen, she still had her own teeth. So yes, getting into the car to make the drive to Gramma’s house was never some- thing I was really psyched for. A trip to Gram’s usually meant hours of either sit- ting in her living room and surreptitiously emptying her candy dish while she and my mom talked in the kitchen or lying on the hallway floor furnace grate until my cheeks hurt. Mesmerized by the pilot light behind the glass. Not exactly a hoot. And I would’ve liked to have had a hoot with my Gramma. My kids do. They have a ball with my mom and dad. Because my mom and dad are fun. It’s as simple as that. They like to laugh. I’m tickled that my kids have been wit- ness to such scenes as my sweet, little, octogenarian mother gleefully flipping me the bird in the middle of a heated card game, my dad’s practised, wickedly-funny bar-room commentary that accompanies any table-top recreation and his hilari- ously-inappropriate rendition of Under the Village Chestnut Tree. I don’t think I’ll ever forget the look on my boy’s faces the first time he dropped that bomb on them. I couldn’t have been any more delighted than if I’d heard my own Gramma step up with “There once was a man from Nantucket...” I’m equally thrilled that my parents listen to their grandchildren, genuinely like them and, most importantly, let them know it. There is real affection there, from both sides. And what a remarkable gift that is. I never knew my dad’s dad. He died when my own father was only 14. I knew my grandmother on my dad’s side briefly and I always enjoyed her Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving visits, but she, like my maternal grandmother, was always just kind of a distant, wrinkled presence in my life. I loved them both but I can’t honestly say that I really liked either one. For that matter, I’m unsure whether they even liked me. We didn’t know each other well enough. I can remember quite distinctly when I stopped being just my parent’s son and was able to become their friend. That’s a great moment. I can now see it happening with my kids and their grandparents. And I think it’s largely a testament to my folks. To their love, their caring and most importantly, their sense of humour. And isn’t that essentially what parenting and grandparenting are all about? Or should be? Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. WE THINK... e-mail responses to newsroom@durhamregion.com Busing rules must be kept strict for all concerned The local Catholic school board is learning one of those painful life lessons children usu- ally discover by the time they graduate from one of the schools the board serves. That’s never to take away something that should not have been given in the first place. You only upset people who did not need to be put in the position of being upset. That’s the problem the board faces after choosing to eliminate busing from routes it shouldn’t have been servicing. While the school board no doubt had good intentions, hard economic realities have forced trustees to make the very difficult decision to stick to the tough rules they have in place for bus- ing. It’s simple and straightforward: busing is in place for elementary school students who live at least 1.6 kilometres (one mile) from school and for secondary school students who live at least 3.2 kilometres (two miles) from their school. Period. But the trustees made exceptions in certain cases and last week, they rescinded those exceptions to the chagrin of many parents. That means 130 elementary school students at St. Patrick Catholic School in Ajax, 267 from St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering and 350 from Father Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School in Whitby will be left to get to school on their own come Sep- tember. The move will also affect 35 elemen- tary students from St. John Bosco in north Oshawa. The bottom line is that the move is expect- ed to save the board about $300,000 a year, not an insignificant amount in these tight- money times. It also reinforces the precedent set by the board of defined boundaries for busing. No matter how far from a given school the board decides it will set the limit for busing, some parents will want to make an excep- tion. Certainly, for very young children, 1.6 kilometres will be a long walk. But, parents have to accept some responsibility for ensur- ing children get to and from school safely. As for high-school-aged children and safety, by the time youngsters are in Grade 9, they should be able to properly follow traffic lights and conduct themselves with regard to safe- ty. And, while a walk of just over three kilo- metres each way is a fair hike, there are other options such as getting rides with friends, paid bus fares or a ride one or both ways with mom or dad. He named a number of accomplish- ments in Durham throughout 2008, such as hosting the Special Olympics 2008 Ontario Spring Games, which held events in Pickering. Also specific to Pickering, he said Durham has committed to enhancing Taunton Road, Bayly Street and Brock Road. Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell asked Mr. Anderson if there is a time line for Finch Avenue to be recon- structed. “Not that I’m aware of,” Mr. Anderson answered. “We have lots of roads that are in need of repair and resurfacing.” Mr. Anderson added that next year the Region’s infrastructure budget will trend downward due to recent decreased rev- enue. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean asked about the status of York Region wanting to put its odour control facility into Cherrywood in Pickering in order to accompany the Big Pipe, which carries York’s sewage to the water pollu- tion control plant in Pickering. Mr. Anderson said the Region has to look at locations in York since that was Durham Region’s direction. “I would hope they do because it wouldn’t be a nice fight between York and Durham,” he said. He added the odour control facility is still going through the environmental assessment process. But Mr. Anderson said while council- lors decide where they think the facility should go, it’s up to consultants to say where it should in fact go. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 23, 20097 P Town of Whitby Seniors Services PORTP E R RY S E NI ORSTRAVEL RECREATION LIFESTYLE HEALTH & WELLNESS PRIZES SEMINARS FEATURING KEYNOTE SPEAKERS FASHION SHOW Wendy Weber, 905-579-4400 ext. 2215 Laurie McCaig, 905-683-5110 ext. 230 Metroland Durham Region Media Group presents: LIVE WELL,LIVE WELL,LOVE LOTS & LOVE LOTS & LAUGH OFTEN atLAUGH OFTEN at 2 DAYS OF FUN! this year’s 5050++5050++ SHOWSHOWSHOW FREE ADMISSION Tues., May 26th 10 am – 5 pm Wed., May 27th 10 am – 3 pm Dinner & Dance Wed. He noted the Region was com- mitted to a number of Pickering road projects. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 23, 20098 P In late 2007, a peer review team criticized RVHS for its $78-million deficit and nega- tivity among staff. A number of changes fol- lowed, including layoffs and the consolida- tion of the mental health unit, which moved inpatient beds from Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital to Centenary in Scarbor- ough. The change was hard on both staff and the community, he says. “I think it’s been very difficult for all those concerned, as I think all tough decisions are,” he says in an interview. Mr. Ganderton still believes it was the right choice. He cited access to a better level of care for mental health patients by expanding crisis services and increasing nursing care in the inpatient unit. While Centenary’s inpa- tient unit has been criticized, and Mr. Gan- derton admits it needs renovations, “it’s not as bad as it’s portrayed,” he said. Also, the extra space on the third floor in Ajax will accommodate the 29 medical beds RVHS hopes to receive funding for, which will help improve flow of the emergency department, he says. It’s undergoing a mas- sive expansion, scheduled for completion this August or September. It’s important RVHS addresses the range of services Durham Region needs as it grows in the meantime, he says. Mr. Ganderton’s thankful for the sup- port from the Town of Ajax and the City of Pickering. “That level of community support is criti- cal,” he says. Although the Friends of Ajax-Pickering hospital has been critical of the hospital dur- ing Mr. Ganderton’s time as president, he thinks “they mean well.” RVHS board chairwoman Janet Ecker thanked the outgoing president for his strong leadership in a press release. “When we brought Rik in, our hospital was facing serious difficulties on all fronts,” she says. “A radical overhaul was needed. The board has been very pleased with the prog- ress that has been made under Rik’s leader- ship over the last two and a half years. We now have a stronger foundation to build on as we go forward.” She added RVHS has balanced its books for the first time since 1998. Mr. Ganderton’s work has included: a multi-year capital plan and major facility upgrades that are underway; completion of a mental health supportive housing project; and the redevelopment of the Ajax campus, which is on time and on budget. Mr. Ganderton’s been most pleased with the “renewed pride” staff have in the orga- nization and is thankful for their help in improving the hospital’s situation. Throughout Mr. Ganderton’s time at RVHS, he’s learned the virtue of patience and has been reminded “there’s nothing easy in health care.” He’ll probably return to the field, he admits; just not before he relaxes, travels and takes a breather. Recycling these containers in Durham Region’s Blue Box program has been extremely successful. Many children’s juice boxes are in Tetra Pak containers, and more recently soup stock and wine makers have moved towards using these containers for their products. Once separated from other recyclable material, bundled and baled, they are sold for repulping. In the repulping process, the package is separated in a giant blender at a paper mill, stripping away contaminants, such as bits of plastic and aluminum. The fi bres are then blended, creating a paper pulp that is cleaned, thickened and sent to a refi ner. The reclaimed high quality paper fi bre is fully reused in new high quality paper products and cartons. Question: We put the plastic “clam shell” fruit and vegetable packaging in our blue box and they are left behind by the recycling truck? Aren’t these recyclable? No, unfortunately here in Durham Region, these containers are not recyclable. Plastic clam shell containers, in which you buy soft fruit – like strawberries, raspberries, tomatoes, and baked goods – can be made of clear polystyrene, polypropylene, or another recyclable plastic. They all look alike, so sorting is diffi cult. Although the clean, stackable and light weight properties of clam shell packaging helps food distributors maintain the quality of the food, the containers can only be recycled through a mixed plastics collection program, which is not available in our market area. Durham Region’s Blue Box program works because we are able to recapture and sell almost 100 per cent of the material we collect. For now, please don’t put these items in your blue box. We will let you know when this changes. Central Duffi ns Collector Sanitary Sewer from Rossland Road to Taunton Road NOTICE OF STUDY COMPLETION The Region of Durham has completed a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) Study to facilitate the construction of a trunk sanitary sewer on Valley Farm Road (south of Rossland Road, along the Hydro easement and Tillings Road, terminating at Taunton Road), in the City of Pickering. The technically preferred solution resulting from the study is the construction of sanitary trunk sewer along the route as outlined in the key plan below. Subject to comments received as a result of this Notice and the receipt of necessary approvals, the Region intends to construct these works in 2012, subject to Council approval. The Study has been completed in accordance with the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment, October 2000, as amended in 2007 - Schedule ‘B’. A Project File Report has been prepared to document the study activities and conclusions. The report is available for public review at the City of Pickering Engineering Department and the Region of Durham Works Department from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday. For further information about the study or the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process, please contact Kevin Wilson at the telephone number and address below or at kevin.wilson@durham.ca If concerns regarding the project cannot be resolved in discussion with the Region, a person or party may request that the Minister of the Environment make an order for the project to comply with Part II of the Environmental Assessment Act (referred to as a Part II order), which addresses Individual Environmental Assessments. Requests must be received by the Minister by Thursday, May 23, 2009, with a copy sent to the Regional Clerk (address below) and the Region’s Project Coordinator. If there are no requests by this date, the Region of Durham may proceed to construction. WORKS DEPARTMENT APRIL 2009 PUBLIC NOTICE Hon. Pearson stu- dents got into the beat of celebrating mul- ticulturalism. The Ajax school welcomed the Pan Fan- tasy Steel Band recently to help wrap up its cultural awareness and diversity campaign. Over the last two months, students partici- pated in anti-racism education and inclu- sion initiatives, and recognized the school’s commitment to multiculturalism. “Today I’m just honoured to be here and share part of my culture with you,” said band member Wendy Jones, her brown hair streaked with a large front section of blond. “I am from Trinidad, I was raised in Cana- da.” Part of her culture includes playing pan, something you can do no matter what colour you are, she said, standing in front of the stage of big steel pan drums. “I play the big one, what you call the bass,” she continued. To get the other band members to come out, Ms. Jones got the students to put their hands together and loudly cheer. As the band played, kids wearing martial arts uniforms and other clothing represent- ing their culture, moved their heads, hands and bodies to the sound of the loud, pound- ing, Caribbean-sounding steel pan drums. Grade 7 student Yodika Singh was among those dressed up in celebration of her cul- ture. “I’m a Hindu and this is called a shalwar,” Yodika said. “It’s what we wear to go to tem- ple for our religion ... and it’s usually worn with a shawl.” During the multiculturalism campaign, students decorated doors featuring flags from their countries, cardboard cutouts of crayons to represent their difference and sameness, and even a handmade cookbook of cultural recipes. “We made flags and showed a peace sign that showed diversity in our classroom,” Yodika said. The campaign taught students about each other and inventors from different races and cultures. Students also made diversity dolls based on themselves. The pan band celebration coincided with the United Nations’ Day to eliminate rac- ism. Students also had a cultural heritage day and a door decorating contest, featuring anti-racism and multicultural displays. At Yodika’s school, they’re taught about acceptance, she said. “I have friends that are different colours,” Yodika said, and added it’s not an issue. “We just get along together.” EDUCATION To the rhythm of peace newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 23, 200911 AP NEW LOCATION 890 TAUNTON RD. With council’s approval, the Town of Ajax is working to designate it under the Ontario Heritage Act as being of historic and architectural value. The white-siding covered one-and-a- half storey apartment building is one of the few remaining structures associat- ed with Defense Industries Limited, the munitions plant built by the Canadian government in what was then Pickering. Five detached houses and three apart- ment blocks were built in 1941 as part of the initial construction, says a report from the Town. All eight buildings are now owned by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation. All are located just south of Hwy. 401 and east of Harwood Avenue. The war-time homes north of the highway weren’t constructed until 1942. According to the Town’s report, 33 Roosevelt is historically significant because it’s closely associated with Ajax’s origins. At issue is land owned by Beechridge Farms Inc., made up of developers Runnymede Development and Tribute, north of Rossland Road on the east and west sides of Salem Road. The land is designated for employment under the Town’s official plan and Ajax refused a request from the developers to convert it into residential. The issue went to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) with the board initially siding with the devel- opers in 2006. However, Ajax and the Region of Dur- ham appealed and the OMB decided to rehear the issue and the case is currently before the OMB. The Town is set to present its case in July. At a recent committee meeting, Ajax Mayor Steve Parish restated the need to fight for the Town’s employ- ment lands. “Here we are today in a major recession and every- one’s concerned about the loss of manufacturing jobs and here we are trying to preserve our employment lands which we need every acre of,” he said. The mayor says the Town’s aggressive defence of its employment lands has paid off. In addition to the Beechridge Farms lands, an area south of Rossland along Harwood Avenue North was originally the sub- ject of a conversion request by O’Shanter Develop- ment. Now owned by Higgins Development, that piece of land is now slated to be a prestige business park with a 100,000-square-foot building under construction. “If we had not opposed this conversion application, there would be houses on that site today,” said Mayor Parish. With the Beechridge lands, the Town estimates about 1,600 high-paying industrial, manufacturing and knowledge-based jobs are at stake. Because of that, councillors agreed on the need to continue to spend money on lawyers and consultants to fight the issue at the OMB. “It’s money well spent, but it’s money that shouldn’t have to be spent by this council,” said Councillor Col- leen Jordan. The program begins May 11 and includes an adult mosquito-trapping program, a lar- val mosquito surveillance program and a larviciding program. Public notification will be provided before each activity begins. The provincial health ministry has announced it isn’t conducting a dead bird surveillance program. “In previous years, the dead bird surveil- lance program was used to determine if West Nile virus was present in the community. Since West Nile virus has been detected in Ontario since 2001, we operate on the princi- ple that the virus will be present every year,” Laura Freeland, manager, Environmental Health with Durham Region Health Depart- ment, said in a press release. The virus is a mosquito-borne disease spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become infected by feeding on the blood of a bird that carries the virus. The disease is not passed from person to person or from bird to per- son. WNV has been found in birds, mosqui- toes, horses and humans in Ontario. There were four confirmed human cases of the virus reported in Ontario last year, including one in Durham. During the 2008 season, the Region sub- mitted 51 birds for testing, with nine birds testing positive for WNV. Provincially, 150 birds tested positive for WNV last year. In addition to positive birds, 62 mosquito pools (a batch of mosquitoes) across the province were infected with the virus in 2008. Durham Region reported no positive mosquito pools last season. To help reduce the number of mosqui- toes breeding in stagnant water around your home, residents are encouraged to: • Remove standing water from around your home where mosquitoes could lay their eggs; • Empty and clean bird baths weekly; • Chlorinate rain barrels or cover them with mosquito screening; • Remove all tires on your property; • Dispose of any water containers in your yard such as tin cans, ceramic pots, wading pools or planters; • Check that roof gutters are clear and drain properly; • Make sure drainage ditches are not clogged; • Clean and chlorinate swimming pools and outdoor hot tubs; • Drain water from pool and chair covers; • Keep grass, shrubs or hedges trimmed reg- ularly; • Do not wash grass clippings, raked leaves or other organic material into roadside catch basins; • Make sure doors and windows have screens that are tight fitting and in good repair; • Turn over compost piles frequently. The health department recommends resi- dents follow these precautions to help reduce the possibility of being infected with WNV: • Wear shoes, socks and light-coloured cloth- ing with long sleeves and full-length pants when outside, especially during evening, nighttime or dawn when mosquitoes are most active; • Use insect repellent containing DEET on exposed skin, following Health Canada’s safety tips on using personal insect repel- lents. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 23, 2009Thursday April 23, 2009 Today’s carrier of the week is Alex. Soccer or track and field? The former was long her sport of choice, but success in track and field caused a re- evaluation of her sporting goals. The path she followed through with has changed her life forever. “I used to play soccer competitively, and actually I just quit (last) September and that’s when I really decided track was going to be my main focus and it was really what I wanted to do,” recalls Dunkley, a Pickering resident who recently signed a full-ride scholarship to Indiana University for track and field. The scholarship will cover all schooling costs -- nearly $40,000 a year -- for Dunk- ley’s four years at Indiana, save for a little spending money, she said. “I am really blessed for that because school is really expensive,” explained the Pine Ridge Secondary School student, who started seeking out scholarship opportuni- ties by filling out questionnaires and send- ing them off to schools that caught her interest and offered her desired academic program -- fashion. While several schools were on her list of possible destinations, a visit to the Indiana campus sealed the deal for Dunkley. “When I went to Indiana, I really liked it. Everything just kind of came together,” she said. “They had my program, a good track team, good coaches and everything. I really liked Bloomington, the city where the uni- versity is, and the campus is really nice. Not too big but not too small. The indoor track was amazing. Everything was nice there.” Dunkley, a serious threat to medal at OFSAA this season in several hurdles and relay events, hopes to one day be held in the same high regard as former Pine Ridge athlete and Canadian Olympian Perdita Felician. However, her main focus is on the short term and finishing off this year strong before heading off to Indiana, where she can only come up with a couple potential drawbacks when talking of her new surroundings. “My biggest fear is not being around my mom. We are close and it’s going to be hard,” Dunkley said. “Other then that I am pretty good with meeting new friends, new people. Being with a track team, you’ll meet people easily.” The other? “Doing laundry and stuff like that. I don’t really do that now,” she added with a laugh.newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 23, 200917 APSportsBrad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.com RINGETTE Raymond shines at nationals CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI -- Alana Ray- mond enjoyed team and individual success at the 2009 Tim Hortons Canadian ringette championships held in Charlottetown, PEI. Nineteen different events are being offered to Durham resi- dents aged 55 and above. These activities, which include both physical games, such as tennis and bowling, and non-physical activities, such as card games, are designed to promote the well-being of seniors and are run under the auspices of the Ontario Senior Games Associa- tion. They began with a euchre tournament on April 15 and conclude with horseshoes on June 20. Events are held at vari- ous locations throughout Dur- ham. This year, the Darlington and Pickering stations of Ontario Power Generation and Wilmot Creek, an adult lifestyle commu- nity situated in Durham, have made significant contributions towards the cost of the Games. Their sponsorships, along with contributions from local busi- nesses, communities and indi- viduals and the free use of facil- ities and services from other supporters, have led to many improvements in the program. “The generosity of OPG and Wilmot Creek has had an imme- diate impact on our Games and will continue to have an impact in the future,” said Bob Taylor, co-chair of the Games commit- tee. “It has allowed us to reduce our entry fees which will encour- age participation, especially for those seniors who enter more than one event and has helped us deal with financial decisions, such as acquiring a website, in a more positive manner.” The committee is now in a position also to consider expanding the program in the fall to include some activities that require special facilities such as curling and hockey. The hope is to build a strong partici- pation base this year as the pro- vincial senior games, Actifest 2010, will be held next summer in Oshawa. “We are pleased to help the Durham Region Senior Games committee in their endeav- ours to promote activities for seniors,” said Wendy Drielsma, sales manager of Wilmot Creek. “We know how important it is for seniors to remain active.” Schedules and registration forms for the Durham Region Senior Games are available at all senior centres and Legion halls in the Durham Region and on-line at www.durhamsenior- games.com.
