This year, expenses for the mayor and councillors decreased, but taxpayers still had to pick up a $379,616 tab for their elected officials.City council sheds expenses PICKERING STILL HIGH COMPARED TO OTHER MUNICIPALITIES BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- Although Pickering council collectively reduced its expenses in 2008, the seven members still cost taxpayers $379,616 overall. In 2007, council racked up an expense bill of $72,975, but reduced it to $59,936 in 2008. Those numbers do not include travel costs, capital equipment, pay, per diems or ben- efits. Most councillors spent more than the travel allowance of $10,900 in 2008. Ajax council has a limit of $2,748 and the Oshawa limit is $5,400. In total, Pickering council spent $66,348 on travel alone. Coun- cil members can go over the set amount as long as they have proper receipts and worked within the policy set out for Council. “If it went over, I would request a cheque from them,” says City clerk Debi Wilcox. Justice Alexander Sosna instruct- ed jurors hearing the case of a youth facing charges related to a shooting in Ajax they are to ignore a slip of the tongue made by the young man’s mother, who was called as a Crown witness. When asked how the young man looks now as compared to when he was charged with aggravated assault and weapons offences in September of 2007, the woman noted the young man had been growing his hair out “since he has been in custody.” On Wednesday Justice Sosna issued a sternly-worded mid-trial instruction to jurors, telling them not to leap to any conclusions about the young man’s possible guilt because he’s being held in custody while on trial. “Whether he is in custody or not, he is presumed innocent of all charges,” the judge said. “The pre- sumption stays with him through- out the case. The fact that he’s in custody is not proof of anything.” The Crown alleges the youth, now 19, was among a group of men who targeted an Ajax man outside his Shoal Point Road residence on Sept. 16, 2007, luring him from the house and shooting him in the leg. The accused, whose identity is protected under the Youth Crimi- nal Justice Act, has pleaded not guilty. Wednesday jurors heard from a witness who said he was forced into a vehicle as he walked along a Scarborough street and driven to Ajax where he was ordered to call the intended victim and lure him outside. Dwight Geary, 19, said he sat in the car while two of his captors went to ambush the victim. “A lot of shots were fired,” Mr. Geary said. “I can’t tell you how many ... less than 20 but more than 15.” In earlier testimony, shooting victim Robert Hines-Grannen said he was ambushed by gunmen and shot. He denied under cross exam- ination that he or the two young men with him returned fire at his assailants. The trial continues. Referencing a newspaper article about a man charged for confronting his daughter’s bully, and a teenager bullied so badly she left her school and was still harassed, Pickering Trustee Chris Braney has many questions and no answers, he said. “I find some of the attacks seem so bra- zen,” Trustee Braney said in an interview following the Durham District School Board’s April 6 standing committee meeting. “It’s disturbing to see in this day and age we seem to be digressing.” In hopes of finding some solutions to bullying problems, Trustee Braney is joining the Coalition for Action Against Bullying in Durham Region as the board’s trustee representative. The coalition grew out of a joint effort between Debra Cockerton of the Red Cross and the Durham District School Board’s Linda Lowery. It pulls resourc- es together into a coalition to deal with bullying issues and includes representa- tives from various organizations. Although Trustee Braney hasn’t per- sonally been affected by bullying, he hears about it and its impacts often. Especially now with Facebook and online messaging, the impacts can be really scarring, Trustee Braney said. Today’s pop culture almost seems to glo- rify bullying, he added. “You think a little different when you’re a parent,” he said. Trustee Braney knows the school board has made many strides in reducing bul- lying, such as character education ini- tiatives, but it needs to keep being pro- active and coming up with new ideas to combat it, he said. Ajax council’s expenses totalled $51,550, which includes travel. Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dicker- son, the biggest spender in 2007, passed the torch to Ward 3 Regional Council- lor Rick Johnson in 2008, who went from $16,736 to $20,358 in expenses. He also invested $2,679 in a new computer. “That expense won’t be there next year,” he said, adding Council gets $10,000 to spend on capital equipment over a four- year term. He put out two newsletters and an annual calendar, explaining why his newsletters were his highest expense at $7,593. His cell phone cost $3,926. “I think it’s very important to keep com- munications open and let (residents) know what’s going on,” he said. He pointed out Ward 3 is larger than all of Ajax and is bigger than Pickering’s other wards. “But we (he and Ward 3 City Councillor David Pickles) get the same travel allow- ance as every other councillor,” he said, adding that should be reviewed. He added many numbers are long dis- tance in his ward. Mayor Dave Ryan spent the second highest amount at $13,914, compared to $11,488 last year. The majority of his expenses went to special events, which cost $10,653. Coun. Pickles increased his spending but remains relatively low at $7,532. Ward 1 City Councillor Jennifer O’Connell and Ward 2 Regional Coun- cillor Bill McLean both decreased their expenses. Ward 1 Regional Councillor Bonnie Littley was the lowest spender. Council and the mayor received pay increases in 2008. Mayor Ryan now makes $70,226, compared to $68,188 in 2007. Each councillor went from $28,412 to $29,261. I’m not your typical dad. And, by that, I mean I’m not gone to work early in the morning and back again around the dinner hour. I’m here at home ... a lot. I do almost all of my writing at home. And while I love this setup, I do worry about the impression it leaves on my children regarding what I do for a living. “What does your Dad do?” “Um, he sits in his office and stares at a blank computer screen. Sometimes he spins in his chair.” The sad thing is, they’d be right. Nine tenths of my writing time is actually spent daydreaming. Besides, I get the bulk of any writing done during those quiet hours when the kids are at school. By the time they come home and see me at my desk, there’s usually not much brilliance going on, I’ve shut down for the day so I can spend some time with them. When I’m working on an audition, a process that can be quite intense and require enormous focus, things aren’t much better from the kid’s perspective. “What does your Dad do?” “Um, he talks out loud to himself and says the same thing over and over and over again ... Oh, and sometimes he dresses up.” When I’m shooting a film or television show, I can sometimes get close to the feeling of being a “real job” dad. During those times I’m often, like my own dad was, gone very early in the morning and not returning until after the dinner hour or sometimes very late. But that’s really where the similarity ends. When I was a kid, I can remember run- ning up to my dad and throwing my arms around his waist when he came home from work I’d missed him so much. I can even remember the smell of his big overcoat. Cold night air with just a tinge of pipe tobacco. I’ve never experienced that “Yay! Dad’s home!” in my own house- hold. I guess your kids don’t have much of a chance to miss you when you never leave. My kids come home from school and say “Oh, Dad’s still here.” Finally, I can remember my dad coming in from a long day at real work, sitting at the dinner table and grousing and grum- bling like real working dads are supposed to. “Helluva day. The Peterson contract was cancelled and the plant almost shut down completely when the number two Sphetzer Valve went. What a racket. Be all next week re-aligning the carriage assembly.” Now that’s really great dad talk. I grew up thinking that’s what real dad’s did. That’s what work was ... a place to go and get frustrated. Me, I can work a 14-hour day, and often do, and not come close to approaching that kind of grousing. “Helluva day. The TV in my trailer only pulled in 10 satellite channels. I spent 15 minutes in hair and makeup and then to top it off we had duck a l’orange again for lunch. And I’d like to know who’s taking all the macadamia chip cookies.” It’s just not the same. And I guess that’s OK. The childhood we have is the one we know and as long as we have someone we can hit up for money and whose wardrobe we can make fun of, our dad is still our dad, regard- less. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Lend a hand in tough times so others can eat, too It’s obvious to everyone times are tough out there and when that’s the case the little things are the first to go. Luxuries that are common when cash is flush and the good times seem like they’ll never end, go by the boards. That can include that little bit of pocket change that goes toward charity. The local food bank comes to mind. It’s one of those charities that needs help the most, especially when the economy is hurt- ing as badly as it is right now. Think about it: as the unemployment rate goes up, as pov- erty deepens, the need for food banks in our communities will only increase. At times like these, we need our food bank more than ever. That’s why the news that the St. Paul’s On-The-Hill Community Food Bank is in trouble is upsetting. Forced to move to a big- ger location in the Pickering Storage Units about six years ago, the food bank had to pay its own rent and is in need of food and cash to keep its doors open. Volunteer Mary Jocz is estimating about $50,000 would do the trick to keep the food bank going. By way of comparison, she said the food bank took in $46,000 last year from various sources and spent about $44,000. But the economic out- look is even more dire this year, according to forecasts, and volunteers are holding their breath hoping they can keep body and soul together. They’re putting out the call in hopes the community will pull together to help the food bank do what it does best: serve the needy in Ajax-Pickering. While there are some organi- zations that do provide help, like the Inves- tors Group, Ontario Power Generation, Wal- Mart, Canadian Tire, local churches and gro- cery stores, more are needed, say organizers. Already, they’ve had to stop providing such items as fresh vegetables, milk, bread and eggs. They’re down now to providing the basic staples but that certainly beats the alternative of having to close the doors for good. Volunteers know better than anyone else that local citizens are having their own struggles with the difficult economy but are just hoping people will be able to spare a lit- tle bit of cash or an extra bag or two of grocer- ies to help out those in need. If you can lend a hand, make a cheque payable to the food bank at the church of St. Paul’s On-The Hill at 882 Kingston Rd. (between 9 a.m. and noon daily) or the food bank at 1537 Pickering Pkwy. (open each Tuesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon for donations but closed each first full week of the month). Food is also needed, especially sugar, pasta sauce, tea and coffee. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com Typical dad behaviour just doesn’t become me after all Neil Crone WE THINK... e-mail responses to newsroom@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 16, 20096 P newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 16, 20097 AP AJ GROEN / METROLAND Sadie meets with good eats AJAX -- Teachers, parents and students of Lincoln Avenue Public School held an East Meets West event where cultural diversity was celebrated. On Sunday, April 12 at roughly 1 a.m., a 33-year- old Ajax man was held up while walking south on Harwood Avenue towards Bayly Street. Police say the victim was initially approached by one man who was wielding a knife. Two other men soon arrived, with one carrying a sword and the other a crowbar. Police say the three men caught up to the victim and began assaulting him, repeatedly hitting him over the head with fists and the crowbar. At one point, they say, the knife was swung at his face, narrowly missing his eye. The robbers took cash and fled the scene on foot. The victim went to a friend’s house and was later treated at the hospital for non-life threaten- ing injuries. Later that morning, at roughly 3:20 a.m., police arrested one of three suspects at a housing com- plex on Harwood Avenue South. They’re looking for two more men. Tristan Theriault, 18, of Harwood Avenue South, faces five charges including robbery, assault and failing to comply with a probation order. 1-866-873-9945 www.welcomewagon.ca If You Are... Here are three fi nancial spring cleaning tips you might want to consider. Get rid of what you no longer need – When you clean your home thoroughly, you end up disposing of all kinds of things – some of which you may have even forgotten you own. The same principle might apply to some of your investments. Speak with your fi nancial advisor to see if you still have some holdings that are no longer appropriate for you and are best removed from your portfolio. Trim back your duplicates – If you went through your house carefully, you might be surprised at how many items serve the same purpose. For example, do you really need two toasters? There may be similar redundancies with your investment portfolio. For example, you may have two stocks issued by different companies that sell similar products. Instead, you might fi nd it’s much better to exchange one of those for a different company in a different sector to boost your diversifi cation. While diversifi cation cannot guarantee a profi t or protect against a loss, it may help reduce the effects of market volatility. Put things back in order – Many of us tend to have messy closets and storage sheds because over time we’ve haphazardly tossed item after item into them. There may not be anything that has to be thrown out, but a good clean-up is needed to organize everything properly. Similarly, your portfolio may need a good spring shake-out. For instance, you could have too much of one investment and too little of another. This could mean you are taking on too much risk or, conversely, that your holdings have become too conservative to provide the growth you need. As a result, some important re-balancing could be required to get your relative weightings back in tidy order, especially in light of the market changes we have seen in recent months. By working with your fi nancial advisor for your portfolio’s spring cleaning, you can help make sure your investment holdings are up-to-date, appropriately suited to your needs and well-positioned to help you make progress toward your long-term fi nancial goals. A new event, Operation Clean Sweep, is an outdoor spring clean-up of seniors’ homes in Ajax and Pickering. Organized by Joe Amantea, assistant technology engineer at Ontario Power Generation, a team of 60 volunteers will clean the yards of senior citizens. Mr. Amantea started Operation Clean Sweep because, “I was taking a course of landmark education, and that motivated me.” Volunteers will be visiting at least 12 senior’s homes on one day and doing a general spring cleaning outdoors. They will clean windows, rake the lawn, trim tree branches, clean out gardens and hopefully plant some flowers. “It is targeted towards seniors who have no family to help them, and find it diffi- cult to do the work themselves. We defi- nitely want to help them out,” Mr. Aman- tea says. With spring cleaning being so physically demanding, the idea is that a once-stress- ful situation will be turned into just light work that the home owners can maintain. Finding volunteers has not been an issue for the event, as engineering employees have already started to sign up, but Mr. Amantea hopes to find as many seniors as he can. The operation will be on Saturday, May 2 with a scheduled rain date of Sunday, May 3. Especially in her sport of choice. Parsons, a Whitby resident, and student at Sinclair Second- ary School has found her niche on the links, but it wasn’t an easy find, she says. “I tried everything,” she recalls of her previous sporting endeavors. “I tried all the sports, and things just didn’t go my way until I picked up a golf club.” And since then it’s been all good. Some three years ago, Parsons hit the links for the first time, at Fox Run with her father. It wasn’t long before the other sports became nothing more than an afterthought. “One day my dad took me to the range and said, ‘let’s go out for fun’,” Parsons recalls. “I was using his golf clubs at the time, and he’s a lefty. I didn’t know what way I was supposed to be swinging, so I grabbed his club and swung away, hitting my first drive a hundred yards, which was pretty good for when I Young golfer has promise See Maya, page 19 WHITBY -- Maya Parsons would like to earn a golf scholarship when she finishes high school. After spending a year bouncing around the tour with his non-exempt card, Martin was itching to obtain the certainty that comes with the full gig and had a pretty good idea of how to get it. “I knew I was a much better player coming into this qualifying school because I knew what to expect,” he began, noting his experience the past WALTER PASSARELLA / METROLAND CAESAREA -- Tyler Martin watches his tee shot head down the fairway during last fall’s Canadian Tour qualifying school. year has helped him grow as a golfer. “I did quite a few Monday qualifiers dur- ing (the past season) so I tried to treat each round like one of those. I knew I had to go out and play around par to get my fully exempt card. I just wanted to hit the fair- ways and hit the greens and take my two putts all day long out there.” The goal was set and the goal was met for Martin who shot rounds of 71, 71, 75 and final round of 71 to finish the 2008 Fall Qualifying School at Royal Ashburn at even par, which was good enough to earn that status he so very much desired. However, it wasn’t until his drive back home afterwards that his accomplish- ments really started to hit home. “It didn’t really sink in when I first fin- ished the round, but when I drove home by myself I really started to think about it, it really kind of set in,” said Martin, who was one of 14 players to earn non-exempt cards at the event. “I am going to have a great opportunity (in 2009) to play in a lot more tournaments which is exactly what my goal was to accomplish in the qualify- ing.” Martin, a former standout golfer at Dur- ham College in Oshawa, admitted to fighting a bout of the nerves beforehand, knowing what was at stake for he and his career. “I discussed with a couple friends recently who were rookies last year and really you have more pressure going into your second year because you have so much to lose,” he said. “As an amateur trying to qualify it’s no big deal because you can retain your amateur status whereas if I didn’t qualify as a pro... there are a lot of options still but it’s easy to put more pressure on yourself than needed.” newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 16, 200916 AP SIMPLY EXCEPTIONAL OPEN HOUSES at Th e DEER CREEK ACADEMY Saturday April 18th, 2009 at Th e DEER CREEK GOLF & BANQUET FACILITY Sunday April 26th, 2009 Visit our website for more details. And then just three holes later, he registered his ninth. The Whitby resident achieved the feat at Wat- son’s Glen Golf Course in Pickering, potting a pair of aces on the way to card- ing a 68 on the day. “Pretty much just shock,” said the 24-year-old of his reaction after his second hole-in-one during the same round, both com- ing on the same nine, dropped. “I didn’t expect one let alone two, so it was pretty neat.” His first of the day came on the par-three third hole, nailing a four iron the exact 195 yards it needed to go to fall in. Just three holes later, teeing it up on the 125 yard, par- three sixth hole, he pulled a sand wedge from the bag and recorded a one on the card. “Practice. Practice. Prac- tice,” he said of the trick to getting a hole-in-one, add- ing, “You also need a lot of luck.” Brimble recorded his first ace in the first round of golf he ever played at High Hope Farms north of Whitby as a 13-year-old. He played at Durham College, helping the team to a provincial champion- ship in his senior year. He moved on to play pro on some mini-tours for two years, and once lipped out of the cup a hole-in-one that would have fetched $50,000 in a hole sponsor- ship during a tournament he was playing in. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 16, 200918 AP Advertising Feature Hit the Links and Reap the Rewards with Bruce’s Golf Rewards Spring is fi nally here, and Bruce’s Golf Rewards is just one more reason to pull out your clubs this season. In its third year, Bruce’s Golf Rewards is a loyalty program designed to reward players with free golf. Seven golf courses participate in the program, including Riverside Golf Club, Whispering Ridge, Pickering Golf Club, Lakeridge Links, Stonehenge Golf Club, Winchester Golf Club and Eldorado Golf Club. Each course is unique, and all have something to offer to players of all skill levels. Players earn points for every round of golf and enjoy many other perks of membership including bonus points on their birthday. Members are also the fi rst to know about upcoming events and sales, such as Bruce’s Garage Sale and Bruce’s Bonus Card. Through partnerships with Merit Golf Vacations, The Rock 94.9, Optimum Bodies Fitness Studio and ParMotion Golf Caddies, members also receive exclusive discounts and promotional offers. The program was created with a dual purpose: to reward golfers for their support and to honour Bruce Summers, one of Durham’s foremost public golf course builders. “Bruce was a man with a true passion for the game of golf,” says Ryan Starr, director of operations for Bruce’s Golf Rewards. “The idea for Bruce’s Golf Rewards came about when we were looking for a way to give something back to those that have been supporting our courses over the years,” says Jerry Nemish, head golf professional for Lakeridge Links Golf Club. There is no cost to become a member, and every member receives a membership card, which they can present any time they play at one the seven affi liate golf courses. Points are accumulated and current point totals are available on the website. This Spring marks the launch of the new website for Bruce’s Golf Rewards. The site will be up and running soon and has been designed to give members access to an incredible amount of information. With interactive blogging, live leader boards, social pages and more, this new website will be the golf destination for 2009. The member area of the site includes full access to newsletters, promotions and coupons, used clubs for sale, news and events and links to all worldwide professional tours. “The new site is essentially a one stop golf site,” says Starr. “It’s very unique in Canada, and we’re very excited that our golfers will be able to utilize all the resources it has to offer.” Every year, all golfers are invited to participate in Bruce’s Tour, a competitive playing environment with 26 events scheduled for 2009. Tour updates are posted on the website every week, allowing members to track their position and set their schedules. The tour includes Skins Games, Bonus Buck events, Two-Person Scramble and Bruce’s Cup Matches. There are six tour divisions for players of all skill levels. All of the seven affi liate courses are now open for the season. Call early to reserve your tee time, golf tournament, wedding, meeting or event! “We’re all looking forward to the 2009 season,” says Starr. “We’ve had a nice early start and are hoping it continues late into the Fall!” For more information about Bruce’s Golf Rewards, please visit the website at www.brucesgolfrewards.com. After that, I went to the range a few times it was just something that was fun for me.” Since then, those 100-yard drives have more than doubled into booming tee shots in the 250- yard range. And the game for Par- sons has evolved from a hobby, to something she hopes could lead her down to a scholarship to a Division I university in the United States. “That would be nice,” she said of obtaining a golf scholarship to the U.S. “My dream would be to go to Florida on a scholarship and I know I can do it. I just have to keep putting in the hard work that I have so far to get to this point.” Should she attain that goal, playing in the United States won’t be foreign as she made her presence felt south of the border. Parsons played on the Planta- tions Tour, which is a circuit that allows boys and girls aged eight- to-19 an opportunity to play competitive tournaments at first class courses across the southern United States. In her first event, The Golf Club at Peverly Farms in St. Louis, Par- sons shot rounds of 83 and 79 to finish first, while most recent- ly, at the Nature Valley Wildcat Junior Cup, played at the Uni- versity of Kentucky, Parsons shot back-to-back rounds of 81 to fin- ish in fifth spot. Locally, after finishing second at LOSSA in Grade 9, Parsons did one better in Grade 10, winning the championships before mov- ing onto OFSAA in Oakville and finishing 10th. And though it seems her suc- cess was generated almost over- night, with such a rapid ascent over the past three years, that’s hardly the case, she says. Parsons practices “at least five days a week”, while trying to bal- ance her schooling, and like any other teenager, a social life. And it’s not easy. “It’s tough to balance things sometimes, I miss so much school,” she admits. “It’s a sacrifice, but I know what I want when it comes to being successful, so I make it happen. And I feel like, if I can do it, any- one can. Hopefully more people do go out there and pick up a club.” From page 13 Maya Parsons hoping for a golf scholarship RON PIETRONIRO / METROLAND Getting ready OSHAWA-- Philippe Gagne drives a ball into the big net at the 7th annual Golf Show hosted by Metroland Media Group at the General Motors Centre in Oshawa. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 16, 200920 AP 47. Q. Why do most people wear two hearing aids? A. Two ears (binaural listening) are better than one (monaural listening): Better Hearing in Noise: A person’s hearing in noise can be improved if the signal reaching each ear arrives at different times. And, today’s hearing aids have noise reduction circuits to help reduce noise allowing for improved communication. Better ability to understand: High frequencies lose their intensity when they travel across the head. Yet, high frequencies are the most important to understand speech, (example, consonants /s/, /t/, /f/, /sh/. Say a person has only a left hearing aid, but the person talking is on the right side, the message may be lost because the consonants are not heard. Wearing two hearing aids ensures better intelligibility. Improved Localization Ability: Our ability to localize sound is dependent upon the relative time in which the sound arrives at each ear, as well as the relative difference in loudness and the relative difference in pitch. When wearing two hearing aids, the brain makes use of the subtle relative differences to determine from where the speaker is coming from. Possible Deterioration of the Unaided Ear: The research indicates that if the brain is ‘starved’ for sound as it is in an untreated hearing loss, one’s ability to understand deteriorates. Hence, the saying: “We hear in our brain, not in our ears”. The pain is most intense when I fi rst get out of bed or when I begin standing. It almost feels like a bruise where the heel and arch meet. What might this be and how can I treat it? ANSWER: It sounds as if you are describing a condition know as plantar fasciitis, an infl ammation of the plantar fascia, a thick fi brous connective tissue running from the heel to the toes. It is responsible for maintaining the arch. The pain is worse when fi rst arising in the morning or at the beginning of an activity. It will then lessen after a few minutes of weight bearing but will also worsen as the day goes on. Plantar fasciitis occurs as a result of excessive pronation and a fl attening of the arch. This causes the foot to lengthen, leading this infl exible fascia to pull away from the heel bone. The end fi bers will develop some micro tears, swelling and infl ammation. Some of the predisposing factors leading to plantar fasciitis are: 1. fl attening of the arch (lengthening of the foot) 2. increased pronation 3. high arched rigid feet 4. inappropriate shoes 5. hill or inclined treadmill running 6. soft terrain running (beach) 7. increased weight and/or age 8. pregnancy Treatment involves ice and rest. Exercises that address the arch and achilles tendon will be benefi cial, as might oral anti-infl ammatory pills or physiotherapy. Women may fi nd that wearing a shoe with a heel height of approximately 1-1/2 inches will help. All of these should lessen the symptoms but they do not address the cause. The best treatment is prescribing custom-made orthotics. They will control the foot mechanics and minimize pronation while supporting the arch. These supports will decrease the pull of the fascia at the heel thereby lessening the infl ammation. Orthotics should always be made from a non-weight-bearing plaster cast. Resolution of the pain can take from several weeks to four to six months, depending on how long you have had the problem. As with most problems, it is important to address the symptoms as soon as they appear. The longer you have the pain, the longer it takes to resolve the problem. Dallas Earle, left, won a contest that brought the athlete into town. Bills QB Edwards comes to Pickering Grade 2 student Dallas Earle wins contest BY SHAWN CAYLEY scayley@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- For one day at least, members of the Earle family were the biggest Buffalo Bills fans one could find. Trent Edwards, quarterback of the Nation- al Football League team, had a lot to do with that as he accompanied Grade 2 student Dal- las Earle to Holy Redeemer Catholic School in Pickering Tuesday and spoke to a gymna- sium full of children about the importance of respect. Edwards, a 25-year-old Stanford University product and former third-round pick of the Bills, walked into the school with young Dal- las by his side to a deafening cheer. “I’ve been in environments like that before, but nothing that exciting,” Edwards comment- ed afterwards. “I enjoy being a part of that and that’s what I am going to take away from this day. If we talk a year from now, I am still going to remember that moment.” And it is certainly a moment the Earle family won’t soon forgot. Edwards arrived at their home earlier in the day, picked them up by limousine and headed off to school. They all talked, while Edwards signed a few autographs, including the new No. 5 Bills’ jerseys that Dallas, her sister Mck- enzie, mom Sue and dad Rick, a diehard Dal- las Cowboys fan, were all wearing. “She’s a very big Bills fan, which we need,” Edwards said of Dallas. The youngster, whose given name derived from her father’s love for his favourite football team, was even willing to change her name for at least a day. “Just for today my name is going to be Buffa- lo,” she said. “It’s pretty cool that I get to meet my first NFL player.” Earle won the chance to have an NFL play- er come to her school by writing a letter about bullying and entering an online contest through NFLCanada.com. Edwards, who is entering his third NFL sea- son, left Earle and the rest of the kids at Holy Redeemer with a message. “Just treat people with respect,” he said. “Honestly, that goes such a long way. I know it’s such a simple idea. Treat people the way you want to be treated. You’re going to go a long way in life if you’re able to do that.” Edwards is hopeful that the level of respect he carries for his Bills’ teammates will trans- late into more success on the gridiron this season. The Bills started 4-1 a year ago, but stumbled soon after, missing the playoffs. In an attempt to upgrade the offensive talent around the quarterback this offseason, the Bills went out and signed enigmatic receiver Terrell Owens to team with star receiver Lee Evans. Edwards figures the new ingredients will provide the recipe for success that the Bills seek. “I am anxious because we have other guys that I normally don’t get to talk about that will be the centre of attention once those guys get double-teamed,” he said of Owens and Evans. “We’ll get Steve Johnson, we’ll get Josh Reed the ball, we’ll get Marshawn (Lynch) and Fred (Jackson) the ball just because those guys demand so much attention.” The Bills open the 2009 season on Monday Night Football at the New England Patriots Sept. 14, while their game at the Rogers Cen- tre in Toronto goes Week 13, Dec. 3 against the New York Jets. Last year, the Heat team athletes from the Pickering Dragon Boat Club won six gold and three silver medals at the August 2008 Club Crew World Championships in Penang, Malaysia. The 50 men and women, all over 50 years of age, of the grandmasters Heat dragon boat team are cur- rently both the Canadian National Champions and the World Champions in the grand dragon division. This year, teams of young athletes from Pickering will represent Canada at the World Dragon Boat Racing Championships in Prague, Czech Republic. They will compete against other youth in the Junior (age 12- 17) and U-23 (age 18 – 22) divisions in August. Over 100 young ath- letes began preparing for international dragon boat competitions throughout the winter months. A col- laborative effort by the Pickering Dragon Boat Club and the Fairport Aquatic Club has formed the Canadian National Dragon Boat Team and provided the young ath- letes with top-level coach- ing and leadership skills. “One of the most poi- gnant and significant moments of the 2008 sea- son occurred at the con- clusion of the Heat team’s last practice before depart- ing for Penang,” stated Scott Murray, head coach of the Pickering Dragon Boat Club. “Club members lined the walkway from the docks, created an honour arch of paddles held high for the grandmasters to walk under and spontaneous- ly sang Canada’s national anthem. I am looking for- ward to the next rousing rendition of our national anthem when the grand- masters form an honour arch for our young ath- letes competing in the Czech Republic.” In recognition of the current champions, and the athletes heading to the Czech Republic, a display featuring a 40-foot dragon boat has been erected in the lobby of the Pickering Recreation Complex. The club’s season kick- off event will be held April 19 at the East Shore Com- munity Centre at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in learning about the sport of dragon boat racing is wel- come to attend the season kickoff. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • April 16, 200926 P HOCKEY League championship for Pickering Midget AE Win three straight after losing opener PICKERING -- The Pickering Pan- thers Midget AE team closed out the season by capturing the York Simcoe Minor Hockey League Championship series, three games to one over TNT. The Midget AE team played in a total of four series en route to the title win, going through East Gwil- limbury (2007/08 OMHA cham- pions) as well as Newmarket, Stouffville and finally TNT with a record of 10-6, and outscoring their opponents 64-48. Each game in the finals was extremely close with a scoring dif- ferential not exceeding two goals. After the Midget AE team lost their first game by a score of 4-2, Dan- iel Tomei stole the show in Game 2 by earning a shutout, setting the stage for Pickering to win the next three games straight in capturing the title. Game one was a tough loss as an earned bye resulted in more than a 12-day layoff for the Panthers after they knocked off Stouffville in the quarterfinals. TNT was extremely energized but the Panthers fared well leading 2-1 entering the third period where the layoff reared its ugly head as the Panthers became sluggish and made some costly mistakes as the period wore on. Game 2 was capped by terrif- ic goaltending by Daniel Tomei, stopping 39 TNT shots, and time- ly scoring from J.P. Bigioni who scored for the Panthers while they were on the short end of a five- on-three penalty-killing situation early in the game, leading the Pan- thers to a 2–0 win. Games 3 and 4 were tough bat- tles with Pickering watching two- goal leads in both games dwindle to single-goal leads in the third period with minutes left in each game. TNT never gave up and consistently pressed, coming close in both games to tie it up with only seconds to go, but the Panthers kept it together and sealed victo- ries. En route to this championship win, the Panthers fell just short of winning the 37th Gene Harrington Invitational Tournament in Niaga- ra Falls, New York. In a hard-fought battle and missing several play- ers due to previous commitments, the Panthers lost 3-2 in the cham- pionship game to Clinton Comets out of New York State who will also represent their association in the Midget U18 Travel State Tourna- ment this year. This season’s team had a com- bined record of 36-26-6 over 68 games, including five tourna- ments where they achieved a 10- 8-4 record and played in either the finals or the semifinals in each tournament with the exception of one. The Panther team includes Kyle Bennett, J.P. Bigioni, Jacob Blon- din, Colin Brine, Scott Cole, Cam- eron Ferguson, Colin Foo, Adam McNeil, Jake McNorton, Julian Newman, Daryl Probert, Christian Schultz, Erich Sora, Mark Sterling, Jonathan Teixeira, Daniel Tomei, Brandon Wieser, (AP Evan Keys). The coaching staff includes Peter Wieser head coach, with Dave Schultz as assistant, Reuben New- man as trainer, and Fil Tomei as team manager.
