I guess it’s just perseverance and be kind to one another,” Mrs. Ferguson says. Be tolerant.” Respect yourself and your partner by keeping your vows and honouring them, Mr. Ferguson adds. Young Ruby and Leonard met at a Pickering community dance, a busy and vibrant event in the 1940s, and Leonard knew right away he wanted Ruby to be his future wife. Leonard’s first feat: making that clear to Ruby’s other possible suitors. They ran the way they had to go,” he says. “One guy was so scared, he moved to Thunder Bay.”AJ GROEN / METROLAND PICKERING -- On April 9, Leonard and Ruby Ferguson will celebrate their diamond anni- versary after being married for the past 60 years.See PICKERING page 3 COURTS 2 RimRock trial Witness saw murder victim swarmed CRIME 5 Subways robbed Ajax, Pickering incidents related: Durham police SPORTS 22 Rock ready to roll Lacrosse team relocates from Pickering to Ajax Fight escalated outside Ajax bar, jurors told BY JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com WHITBY -- Orin Felix was swarmed by several young men in a fight outside an Ajax bar shortly before his death, an emotional witness told a jury. They jumped him,” Daniell Clements testified in Superior Court Tuesday, dab- bing tears from her eyes as she described the final frantic moments of a friend she knew by the nickname Birdie. I (saw) him go down to the ground,” Ms. Clements said. “I was screaming out his name and I was asking the people watching why they were just standing there and they weren’t helping.” Ms. Clements was among dozens of young people who streamed out of the RimRock nightclub on Harwood Ave- nue in the early morning hours of Sept. 1, 2006, and watched as fights erupted in the parking lot. Several witnesses have testified the violence was a continuation of a dance-floor scuffle, involving two groups of young men, that had occurred inside the bar earlier in the evening. Mr. Felix, 19, died of stab wounds sus- tained in a fight outside the bar that night. Another young man was severe- ly injured when he was stabbed in the neck. Troy Johnson-Lee, 24, of Scarborough, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Mr. Felix and attempted murder in the stabbing of the second man. Ms. Clements, who was at the club for an evening out with a group of friends that included Mr. Felix, said she saw a man in a distinctive striped dress shirt in the middle of a dance-floor scuffle inside the bar. She said she saw the same man stab 20-year-old Trevor Hunter in the neck as he stood watching a fight outside the bar after the 2:30 a.m. closing time. The man in the striped shirt was also among the group of young men who caught up with Mr. Felix near the Ajax library as he fled the nightclub parking lot, Ms. Clements said. He was involved ... in the jumping of Birdie and that stabbing of Trevor,” Ms. Clements said. The Crown contends Mr. Johnson- Lee was the man in the striped shirt described by several witnesses during this trial, which began in early March. Jurors have seen security camera pho- tos of Mr. Johnson-Lee wearing a striped shirt. Police seized a striped shirt during a search of the accused man’s home fol- lowing the killing, jurors have heard. They’ve also heard that jeans seized from Mr. Johnson-Lee’s home bore trac- es of Mr. Felix’s blood. The trial, before a jury and Justice Bruce Glass, continues. newsdurhamregion. comNews Advertiser • April 9, 20092 AP WE’VE GOT YOUR SIZE Sizes 4-15 Widths AA-EEE PICKERING TOWN CENTRE • UPPER LEVEL • SEARS WING COOL & LIGHT Treat your feet to an incomparable feeling of freedom and freshness.COURTS Witness saw murder victim swarmed 1550 BAYLY ST., # 35, PICKERING 905. 839. 0574 www.aroundthehomekitchens. com KITCHENS VANITIES WALL UNITSKITCHEN RENOVATIONS astern avestroughing Ltd. They chose to postpone the wedding “so the two old ladies didn’t have anything to talk about.”And on April 9, 1949, at a candlelight ceremony, young Ruby Black, 18, and Leonard Ferguson, 20, took their vows and became Mr. and Mrs. Fergu-son at Pickering’ s former East Woodlands Com-munity Centre. The whole community came,” Mrs. Ferguson recalls, adding the entire wedding, including her dress, only cost $110.They moved into Ruby’s mother’s place, a mod-est, cozy, cottage-style home in the East Wood-lands area, and have lived there ever since. In fact, Mrs. Ferguson has lived in the home from the time she was nine years old. The new Bluetooth probe detects where cancer is likely to spread from a primary tumour, and doctors then only have to remove what’ s necessary. Standard lymph node removal for breast cancer requires surgery that removes most nodes in a woman’s underarm area. It’s now becoming the standard of care in Ontario and in fact all of North Amer-ica,” Dr. Ricer said, adding it can also be used for melanoma.Lisa McVety, manager of the operat-ing room, explained only a small incision is made to remove the node and women who undergo the surgery can often leave the same day. The small, less-invasive sur-gery reduces swelling, something she said can be quite painful, even when women are doing otherwise menial tasks such as putting on underarm deodorant. This is the technology we needed,” she said. The Town of Ajax has pledged $250,000 to purchase gifts for the hospital over a four-year period. This is the second install-ment; last year the Town donated an auto-mated endoscope reprocessor, commonly known as a scope washer. Mayor Parish said while the hospital has gone through some difficult times lately and Ajax coun-cil doesn’t mind criticizing it, the Town wants to be part of the solution. We’re glad our money is being put to work right here in the community,” he said.It allows doctors and nursing staff to be as effective as possible with the hospital’s always limited resources,” he said. Chad Hanna, hospital foundation presi-dent, welcomed the donation. Growing communities face the chal-lenge of providing really high-quality care with finite resources,” he said. “It almost creates the need for other forms of fund-ing to buy equipment.”He added by donating equipment, the Town can control how the money’s being spent and it “makes their gift real.” HEALTH CARE Hospital welcomes gift from Ajax JASON LIEBREGTS / METROLAND AJAX -- Dr. Michael Ricer discusses new detection equipment with Mayor Steve Parish, left, Regional Councillor Colleen Jordan and Wendy Temple, a nurse at Rouge Valley Health, during a press conference highlighting the purchase of Sentinel Node Biopsy equipment with funds from Town of Ajax’ newsdurhamregion. comNews Advertiser • April 9, 20095HEATING & COOLING comwww.since 1990GTA’s Larest independent Heating & Air Company the quietest furnace money can buy!with the purchase of G71 Furnace and XC14 AC, Call for details.WHITBY SHOWROOM 117-1910 DUNDAS STREET E. 905 576- 7600HWY401 DundasThicksonGerrardCallCall 310-4328310-4328 310- HEAT310- HEAT AND GET UP TO 11350350 ** TAX CREDITBONUS:BONUS: RECEIVE a FREE*Humidifi er or Air Cleaner 24 HourEmergencyService RECEIVERECEIVE37153715IN REBATES*IN REBATES* Up toUp to WITH PURCHASE OF MODULATING G71 FURNACE & CENTRAL AIR*66MONTHS MONTHS OAC*OAC*DO NOT DO NOT PAY FOR PAY FOR AND AND AP Durham Police say incidents related DURHAM -- A pair of robberies at Subway restaurants is related, say Durham Region-al Police. There were two persons in the vehi-cle at the time of the collision, they were not hurt,” said Sgt. Paul McCurbin, of the Durham Regional Police Service’s Ajax-Pickering division. The car took out a column and the area was blocked off by the police and the fire department until building inspectors looked at the site. They determined that the building wasn’t going to collapse, so they eventu-ally put a fence around it and they shored up the building and they’ll repair it in the upcoming days,” said Sgt. All content copyright Editorial Opinions Over the last few years I’ve noticed something that I find a little upsetting. It seems like any drive more than a few kilometres takes me past at least one home-made, roadside memorial to an auto fatality. You’ve no doubt witnessed this as well. They are ubiquitous. My own commute takes me past no fewer than five of them. Ten years ago we didn’t see these. Cer- tainly not in the number we now do. What is that telling us? I don’t know what to make of this phe- nomenon. A part of me absolutely understands grief and wanting to remember a lost loved one. It must be life-shattering to get such news and I can fully comprehend not wanting to let someone go. But these roadside wreaths and crosses seem to me more a memorial to catastro- phe than any kind of loving tribute. I don’t mean to sound callous. I understand loss. I do. I watched my 24- year-old brother die in a hospital bed, his body riddled with cancer. His death was no less unfair or shock- ing than if he had been claimed by a drunk driver or icy road. The hole left in our family was just as big as it would’ve been had he died behind the wheel. And yet, none of us gathered around his bed that day felt compelled to return to that room with a home-made cross and a wreath to mark the place of his passing. That was 25 years ago and I still think of him almost every day. But I do so in my heart and always fondly. I rarely, if ever, think of him in that bed. Why then, are some of us choosing to remember so vividly the place of the crash? Honestly, I think it’s a little unhealthy if not a trifle ghoulish. I don’t doubt that all of these displays are created out of love. Please don’t mis- understand me. But I can’t help but think that it is mis- placed love. It seems to put all the focus on the trauma and not the person who is gone. And if I find them disturbing, I can- not imagine the kind of anguish a fami- ly member must have to relive with each drive by. That’s just heaping pain upon pain. I certainly can’t believe the deceased would wish for their loved ones to have to replay the conditions of their death over and over and over again. Funerals and headstones and memo- rials are and always have been for the living. But they have a very specific and appropriate purpose. They are there to help us through the grieving process. To move us towards acceptance of loss and the eventual re-embracing of life once again. They are there to commemorate a life lived, not a life ended. And that, I think, is what I find so upset- ting about these crosses and wreathes and hand-lettered sign-posts of tragedy. They do not move us forward towards life. They seek to keep us at the scene of the accident. They are static, bleak fin- gers pointing backwards to a very bad moment in time. The dead would never ask this of us. They have moved on to a much healthier perspective. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Resurfacing of Hwy. 401 can’t come fast enough It’s doubtful Bob Dylan had Hwy. 401 drivers in the Ajax-Pickering corridor in mind when he crooned, “everybody must get stoned.” But that’s what it’s come to as the stone chips rain down on hapless motorists who are bombarded regularly to their peril. It’s enough to crack one up. Pickering Councillor Bill McLean knows all about the those little stones. And how. He’s received some 400 e-mails from frustrated people complaining about the poor conditions along the 401 in Ajax and Pickering. The problems have come about from a tough winter and the potholes that result from the nasty weather. Because the high- way is in desperate need of repair, the Min- istry of Transportation has removed the top layer of asphalt but has yet to resurface the highway. What’s left is an ugly driving experience for several kilometres. It’s a bumpy ride but it’s worse than that. What often occurs is that road rubble can lead to chipped and cracked windshields. The good councillor himself has had to replace his own windshield. Whitby resi- dent Mark Woodward had to replace a windshield in one vehicle last fall and has cracks in the windscreen of another vehi- cle from recent rock attacks. Ajax-Pickering MPP Joe Dickson has been told the resurfacing could occur later this month, which would be a huge relief to all who must travel the roadway. The big questions will be compensation for all those who have suffered damage to their windshields as a result of driving along the corridor. Coun. McLean has told the e-mailers he will go after damages from the Prov- ince for those who have suffered cracked windshields along the corridor. The ques- tion may come up about how to prove the problem occurred at the time and in the place the person says it did. No matter, Coun. McLean is sending along information about filing a claim with the Province though claims can only be filed by fax or via mail, not online. That’s for security reasons, according to Mr. Dick- son. The best solution for all concerned, of course, is quick action on the resurfac- ing route. But that will take a few months. Until that time, if you’re one of the unlucky ones who takes a nick or crack from a stone along the Ajax-Pickering rock corridor, you’re encouraged to e-mail bmclean@cityofpickering.com. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com Crash memorials mark traumatic time better left behind Neil Crone newsdurhamregion. comNews Advertiser • April 9, 20096 P WE THINK... e- newsdurhamregion. comNews Advertiser • April 9, 20097 AP 16th Annual Easter Egg Hunt Good Friday April 10th 9:00 am SharpEasterFlowers Hydrangeas• Hydrangeas MixedBaskets• Mixed Baskets Lillies & More ...• Lillies & More ... Snooker A Foot in Cold Water reforms to raise money for Pickering Panthers hockey team BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- A popular 70s progressive rock band is stepping foot in Johnny B’s Club in Whitby this weekend for a fund- raising concert. The Pickering Panthers and 94.9 The Rock are presenting A Foot in Cold Water, featuring old and new members, at Johnny B’s, 75 Consumers Dr., to raise money for the Panthers hockey team to attend a tournament in Europe this summer. It’s for a great cause and they’ll get to see the new Foot in Cold Water show with its new members,” said drummer Danny Taylor. The band has a strong connection to Pickering. Although each member grew up in Toronto, the band took up residen- cy at a 110-acre farm in Brougham where they looked for inspiration for their first album. The band even became involved in the anti-airport group People Or Planes, the original name of Land Over Landings. But eventually the band found with tour- ing and recording, “It wouldn’t be prac- tical for us to be living in a farmhouse.” Disenchanted with the music industry at the time, the band chose to break up and members went their separate ways. Some went to the United States, while others remained in the Durham area. Mr. Taylor has lived in Pickering since 1976. Band mate and lead vocalist Alex Machin lives in Pickering also, and his son is on the Pickering Panthers. But they’ve always been involved in the industry. We’ve kept our feet in music,” Mr. Tay- lor said. Over recent years, most members of the band have lived in close proximity and have performed at a number of spe- cial events. These parents who have their kids in organized hockey have a huge amount of money to pay,” Mr. Taylor said. The concert takes place Saturday, April 11; doors open at 8:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25 in advance or $30 at the door. newsdurhamregion. comNews Advertiser • April9, 20098 AP with ofÀ ces now inPICKERINGTOSERVEYOUBETTER!WITH OFFICES NOW IN PICKERING TO SERVE YOU BETTER!CALLING ALL WOMEN!Be a part of the Curves / AvonFitness Study:The largest fi tness study for women ever.SIGN UP NOW - LIMIT 50 WOMEN PER CLUB YOU WILL RECEIVE:A Start and Finish Fitness Evaluation 30 Days FREE on CurvesComplete.com - the Complete Solution to Managing your Weight Supervised Training from a Curves Trainer 30 Days for $30*Work Out 3 Times a Week for 4 Weeks CALL YOUR LOCAL CURVES CLUB TO PARTICIPATE BY MAY 9, 2009.Participants will have full membership privileges during the study. A discussion on homework guide- lines led Durham District School Board trustees to request that staff investigate developing a parent survey, similar to the one it presents to students. Whitby trustee Christine Winters rec- ommended the survey, based on some of the questions she received from par- ents regarding discrepancies around the amount of homework given. The board’s homework guidelines list minimum and maximum amounts of homework suggested, but schools are to look at what student needs are, said superintendent Luigia Ayotte. I noticed the (homework) guidelines here haven’t been amended since 2006 so maybe we should take a look at this,” Trustee Winters said, during the board’s April 6 standing committee meeting. There continues to be differing thoughts about what is good and what’s bad in terms of the homework amount, said Uxbridge trustee Joe Allin. I think that perhaps some of the angst to performance on provincial test- ing may not have been as strong at the time this particular policy was birthed,” Trustee Allin said, and added that may be reason enough to review homework guidelines. While he was campaigning in Uxbridge, a girl had a booklet of provincial test- ing prep work, he said, holding his fin- gers about an inch apart to describe the booklet’s thickness. There should be some common ele- ments in the guidelines that could apply to everyone, he added. Ajax trustee Marilyn Crawford said her daughter never received 120 minutes of homework a night in high school as board guidelines suggest. Trustee Crawford’s concern is not of too much, but not enough homework, she said, and added it may be a par- ent’s perception that without home- work, their child isn’t doing any school work. But, secondary school homework is more self-supervised and different than elementary school, said student trustee Prateek Gupta of Pickering High School in Ajax. In high school, it’s not so much that homework is assigned, as students taking it upon themselves to do extra questions, said student trustee Joselyn DeJong of Cartwright High School in Blackstock. The mixed discussion shows why they cannot have an absolute homework amount prescribed, Ms. Ayotte said. Oshawa Trustee Michael Barrett was interested in the idea of a parent survey. Have we ever done anything on that other element of stakeholders, the par- ents?” Trustee Barrett asked. I like the idea of engaging our parents through surveys as a stakeholder,” Trust- ee Barrett said. His oldest child is 23 and he has never had a survey asking for his opinion, he said. School board staff agreed to look into the survey and come back to trustees with some recommendations. newsdurhamregion. comNews Advertiser • April 9, 200918 AP ASK US A B O U T T H E HOME RE N O V A T I O N TAX CRE D ITCUSTOMERCAREANDORDER DESKCUSTOMER CARE AND ORDER DESK 905-683-0887 OR 416-984-4332905-683- 0887 OR 416-984-4332 WHITBY 4400 Halls Rd. Although Dentistry on Liver-pool might seem like an odd place to display work, Oshawa resident Labelle-Johnson and Whitby’s Huson viewed it as a great oppor-tunity to expose their work, while potentially offering some serenity for nervous patients at the same time. And with the messy weather tran-sition from winter to spring, seeing some beauty indoors doesn’t hurt either. I hope that people will feel happy when they look at our paintings and remind them of the promise of spring, soon to come,” Labelle-Johnson says. Featuring colourful and live- ly watercolour paintings and a Huson oil, the works in the exhib-it reveal the artists’ favourite sub- ject matter, florals, gardens and nature. Both are Pineridge Arts Council members and say it’s integral to their careers as artists. The women are also active members of the Oshawa Art Association (OAA) and Labelle-Johnson, its presi-dent, hopes to continue both orga- nizing and participating in events such as this, always striving to pro-mote the works of local artists.Huson explains the connec-tion between community organi-zations and being able to exhibit work in interesting locations such as the dental office.Community organizations ... are vital in keeping an artist in touch with his or her art community on a large scale,” she says. “The pro-motion of the arts provides for networking opportunities, peer encouragement and support and publicity. Many artists struggle to find opportunities (both paid and unpaid) to show their work to the public and community organiza-tions often can provide or assist in finding such opportunities.” Labelle-Johnson adds that con- necting with the community offers rewards personally as well as pro-fessionally. The OAA has provided me with events to show and sell my work, but more importantly I have learned so much from the speak-ers at the monthly meetings and have made many good friends in art,” she says. “I enjoy participat-ing in helping to organize the year-ly shows and that is how I have made many friends.”The best thing about being an artist is the ability to have a cre-ative outlet that garners plenty of compliments -- a real ego boost- er.”Dentistry on Liverpool, which regularly shows the work of local artists, is at 927 Liverpool Rd. in Pickering, just south of Bayly Street. Labelle-Johnson and Huson’s work is on display until April 30. See the artists’ lush, deli-cate and vivid artwork in both the front foyer and on the second floor of the office building. We don’t know what’s going to happen with the show until the audience starts telling us,” Crone says. Crone and Frank perform two distinct fundraising shows at Westminster United Church at 7 and 9 p.m. He says the show is “complete- ly directed by the audience” and the pair only has a few outlines for the evening. Be prepared for games and sketches. And get ready to be a part of the fun, as they will be going into the audi- ence to bring viewers up on stage. But relax -- unlike a lot of stand-up routines, the intent isn’t to make audience members look foolish. If anyone is going to look like an idiot, it’s us,” Crone says. He appears in Little Mosque on the Prairie and, in addition to being an author, guest speak- er and comedian, is a Metroland Durham Region Media Group blogger and columnist. Frank is a Toronto Training Centre Fac- ulty member at Second City in Toronto and has appeared in shows such as Street Legal, Due South and the Red Green Show. Second City alumni, they co-founded the former Big City Improv on Queen Street in Toronto. They have been involved in various improv troupes and, fair to say, know one another quite well. We always say we’ve spent more time together in hotel rooms than with our wives,” Crone quips. He was asked to speak at the church roughly a month ago and “just had a ball.” Contact- ed afterwards to see if he would help the church with a fundrais- ing night, Crone was more than willing. I really liked the spirit in this place,” he says, noting the church has a large out-reach program. While “it’s going to be strange for us” performing in a church, Crone notes Westminster Unit- ed is contemporary in terms of its design, describing the venue as “a big beautiful space” almost like an amphitheatre. One idea for the evening is for a Complaints Department bit, where Crone leaves the room and Frank goes into the audi- ence and gets an object from someone. I’m returning the item that Kevin’s got and I have no idea what it is,” he says. Crone stresses that the shows are kid-friendly and the younger set is certainly welcome. The funds raised are for gener- al church needs. A free babysit- ting service is available. The church is at 1850 Ross- land Rd. E., just west of Garrard Road. Over the winter, an agreement was reached with Ajax, and the Rock decided to make the switch in venues. It gives (Rob and I) a chance, in a way, to come home,” says St. John, who now holds the dual role of GM and assistant coach with the club. “We have a lot of friends in Ajax, and we are hoping they come out to support the team. We’re pretty confident that we should be able to draw bigger crowds. That was the unfor-tunate thing with Pickering. We drew, but we didn’t draw as many people as we thought we could.”St. John is hoping that the move to Ajax will boost attendance from the 100-150 they aver-aged to something in the neighbourhood of 200-300 this season. The team will also undergo a change behind the bench, with St. John stepping down from the head coach position he has occupied the past six seasons to assistant, paving the way for Jim Veltman to take over. Veltman, considered a legend in the sport, was an assistant with last year’s team.Having him as an assistant last year gave me a firsthand look at the potential he has to be in the head coaching position,” says St. John. “It was almost a no brainer for us to say, ‘Hey, he’s ready to do this.’ He has a lot of great ideas and a lot of fresh ideas. We brought Jim in to lead and we think he’s ready to do it, and we’ re very confident he’s going to do a great job for us.”Veltman’s first look at returning veterans and hopefuls will come this weekend when the team opens training camp at the Village Arena on Church Street. The first workout will be from 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, followed by another on Sunday from 2-4 p.m.Having traded away netminder Mike Miron at last year’s trade deadline, goaltending is one area the team will be taking a hard look at dur-ing training camp, says St. John. We’re confident in the two guys we have right now in Scott Komer and Michael McKay, but we’re definitely going to be looking at that role and make sure if they can’t get the job done, we make sure we find a goalie that can. That’s not to knock the two guys, but they haven’t had the experience of any of the other goalies we’ve had on our team the past six sea-sons.”THE SCOOP -- Both tryouts this weekend are open to the public, with the club encour-aging fans to attend... The Rock moves into their new digs at the ACC for training camp the weekend of April 18- 19... They open the sea-son Saturday, May 2 in Oshweken (formally the Mohawk Stars). The home opener is Friday, May 8 against the Norwood Nitro. The team will play four Friday night and four Saturday night home games... Only four of the six teams in the league will make playoffs. Last year’s 5-9-0 record by the Rock wouldn’t have been good enough to make it under the new format.AJ GROEN / METROLAND Racing to the wall PICKERING -- The Pickering Swim Club held its annual Rainbow Classic swim meet at the Pickering Recreation Centre. Rock ready to roll into ACC LACROSSE TRAMPOLINE Pickering athlete bounces to gold AJAX -- Brandon Robinson had quite the showing at the 3rd Ontario Cup tram-poline event, held recently in Ottawa. The 16-year-old Robinson finished with three gold medals and a silver. The gold showings came in the Dou-ble Mini Trampoline event in the nov-ice men’s 15-plus event, while another came alongside Mariah Madigan in the National Mixed Syncro event. The third one came with Greg Tomczak in the Youth Men Syncro event, while the silver was earned in the Youth Men Individual Trampoline category. After coming off of a very strong second qualifier a few weeks prior to the event in Mississauga, one of Robinson’s coaches asked him if he wanted to add another event to his repertoire -- the double mini trampoline. It is a very dif-ferent event in comparison to the regular trampoline event as the athletes have to sprint down a track and do two tricks off the trampoline and land on a firm mat.Robinson, a Grade 10 student at Pickering High School, was up for the challenge, training three times prior to the event, before advancing to win gold. He will compete in the event at the pro- vincial championships later this month. In his individual routine, where he won silver, Robinson had increased the degree of difficulty from his last comple-tion, going from an 11. 2 to an 11.9. Heading in, his goal was simply to com-plete the routine, making the silver all the more impressive.BASKETBALL Dickson Printing takes over first place AJAX -- Top Shelf hung on to defeat Michael’s Eatery 48-45 in opening game action of the Ajax Men’s Basketball League.
