There is no electricity service to the home and it’s vacant, so that would be the only explanation, he said, adding an example of an accident is someone smoking carelessly. Nine vehicles were on the scene -- seven from Pickering; Stouffville and Uxbridge supplied one tanker each. No injuries were reported, but crews were looking through the refuge to ensure no one was in it, platoon chief Ingram said. And once that’s complete, the house will be demolished since it’s unsafe and beyond repair. Deputy Chief Simon Almond said since the 1970s (when the federal government expropriated the lands for a possible air- port), there have been a number of fires in abandoned homes and barns but not as many in recent years. “We get one or two a year,” he said. Locals were dismayed to see what was probably “someone’s dream home” in the past go up in flames. Mary Delaney, an original member of Land Over Landings (LOL), an anti-air- port group, said unfortunately the news didn’t surprise her. LOL has always believed that the best security for homes is occupancy, she said, but more and more homes are boarded up and isolated as time goes on. “We need people. We need communi- ty. We need neighbours who care about each other,” she said. Whether it was done maliciously or accidentally, it was still vandalism, she said. “I’m sure it was vandalism,” said Gabri- elle Untermann, Claremont resident and LOL president. “The empty houses are absolutely inviting vandalism.” Transport Canada, in charge of the lands, has arranged regular security patrols for the abandoned homes, and some of them even have security systems. This was not one of them, although the boards blocking entry to the home are made of heavy plywood, platoon chief Ingram said. A fire prevention officer and fire inspec- tors were on the scene. Costs stemming from the fire are yet to be determined. At council’s executive committee meet- ing Monday, a representative for Pickering Brock Centre submitted an application for a variance to Pickering’s sign bylaw at the shopping centre, which fronts Brock Road between Hwy. 401 and Kingston Road. The owner wants to erect three, 10.6-metre signs, fronting Hwy. 401, Brock Road and Pickering Parkway (with video at the last location). It also plans one for the roof of the former Papp’s restaurant, which now has new own- ers. Although pleased with progress on the property, Mayor Dave Ryan didn’t agree with the video sign. “I don’t think that video signs promote safety. In fact, I think they detract from it,” he said, adding it could also bother nearby residents. Ward 3 Regional Councillor Rick Johnson said it’s important to create jobs and attract people to Pickering. “I think this is a very exciting project and we have to move along,” he said. Council approved the application, but chose to defer the decision on the video sign to a later date. City clerk Debi Wilcox said the applicant since informed the City it still wants to erect the sign fronting Pickering Parkway, but plans to retract its proposal for video. POLITICS Video sign in Pickering shopping centre doesn’t make the cut Toronto teens struck by vehicle BY JEFF MITCHELL jmitchell@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- A teenager charged in the deaths of two youths during a brawl in Ajax remains in custody awaiting trial. The Pickering boy, 17, was denied bail Friday morning by Justice of the Peace Robert Boychyn. The ruling came after a day-long bail hearing Wednesday in Oshawa. A publication ban covers reasons for the ruling and evidence presented during the bail hearing. The identity of the youth and the deceased boys is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The Crown alleges the boy was at the wheel of a vehicle that struck two Toron- to youths, aged 15 and 17, as a group of young people brawled at Hermitage Park in the area of Kingston Road and Church Street Feb. 27. The boys both died in hos- pital. The Pickering teen is charged with two counts each of criminal negligence caus- ing death, dangerous driving causing death and failing to remain at the scene of an accident. A third youth who was stabbed during the fight recovered. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 25, 20093 P Wayne Arthurs, MPP Pickering-Scarborough East www.arthurs.ca 300 Kingston Rd. And the man, who police allege was at the wheel of a rented van that led police on a lengthy pursuit through parts of Ajax and Pickering, announced his intention Friday to resolve his case with pleas of guilt to other accusations. Barry Allen, 41, of no fixed address, appeared in an Oshawa bail court by video Friday morn- ing and asked to be remanded to a plea court Monday. The burly, balding man lis- tened from the Lindsay jail as a prosecutor told Justice of the Peace Robert Boychyn that the most serious charge against the man -- attempted murder -- was being withdrawn at the request of the Crown. Mr. Allen faces additional charges of dangerous driving, forcible confinement, failing to stop for police and breach of probation in connection with a bizarre chase March 12 that began on Hwy. 401 and ended some time later when a rent- ed U-Haul van was ditched on a dead-end road in rural Pickering. The chain of events began at 10:30 a.m. Thursday when police received reports of a pos- sible impaired driver on Hwy. 401 in the Pickering area. The driver of the U-Haul ignored an OPP officer’s attempt to stop the vehicle, instead leav- ing the highway at Westney Road and heading north, speed- ing through stoplights on the way. Police called off the chase over safety concerns but soon encountered the van on Hwy. 407, Sgt. Woodford said. An OPP cruiser followed the suspect vehicle as it exited at the York-Durham Line, travelled north to Hwy. 7 and turned east, he said. The driver of the van veered onto an unpaved, dead-end street in the hamlet of Green River. The officer followed and had gotten out of his cruis- er when the driver of the van turned and drove toward the cop, police said. The officer fired a shot at the truck and dove out of the way. The van was driven into a ditch and the two occupants bailed out, running to Hwy. 7 and attempting to flag down passing cars. The suspects tried to hijack three vehicles before being overpowered by tow truck driv- ers Richie Barnes and Mike Bai- ley. A woman apprehended at the scene, 20-year-old Melissa Maxwell of no fixed address, is charged with forcible confine- ment, assault with a weapon and breach of probation. All content copyright Editorial Opinions UNIVERSITY We need to do better than UOIT To the editor: University name: When students make applications to places like Western, McGill, Trent and Lakehead, a name like our own UOIT (or is it pronounced you owe it) hard- ly compares. Surely we need a distinctive name that can be shortened to a single identifying word as with others. How about Durham or Oshawa or McLaughlin? Whatever name is chosen, it must include a single word that can distin- guish it. UOIT? Yech! John Manuel POLITICIAN SALARIES Fix roads instead of paying councillors so much To the editor: As the wife of a recently retired GM work- er, I’m tired of the media and the public dumping on autoworkers, saying they make too much money. Then, to my horror, I read what we the taxpayers paid Regional coun- cillors last year. My husband would have had to work 40 hours overtime per week, for I don’t know how long to even come close to Regional chairman Roger Anderson’s wage. Mr. Anderson was quoted in the same arti- cle as saying it took years for councillors’ wages to be back in line with neighbouring councils. Well, good for you. Kind of like what our CAW has done for our autoworkers over the years. Difference is you’re upper management. How come nobody questions upper man- agement, especially that of the automakers? Why do they not have to make concessions as well? Councillor Don Mitchell, I commend you. Then maybe our tax dollars would go to something useful like road repairs, maybe, instead of into councillor’s pockets. Wendy Maynard BAILOUT GM should just print its own money To the editor: The lunatics at the US federal reserve have decided that they will begin to buy their own long-term bonds, possibly up to a trillion dollars for starters. It seems for- eigners who were buying such debt are now more reluctant and the Fed’s insatia- ble borrowing needs must increasingly be met by “monetizing the debt” or “print- ing money.” In this regard it would be logi- cal to conclude that when General Motors U.S., requests a “bridge loan” from the U.S. government, the Fed would in future, likely have to print any such bridge loan monies. In the interest of “fast-tracking” a return by General Motors to economic viability, I would suggest General Motors short-cir- cuit the money printing process by print- ing its own money needs, much like the US Fed. Surely there will be savings and effi- ciencies derived in this manner. R.H. Posma COMMUNITY Adults need to be better role models To the editor: Not only kids litter, but adults do also. It is evident in my own neighbourhood. Litter in private driveways which the adults do not remove but simply walk by each day, appearing not to notice; adults throwing cig- arette butts on the ground not only in public places but on private space as well. If we take no pride in our own private property, how can we take pride in the larger community? We have a society in deterioration; parents unable or unwilling to teach their children good citizenship and also refusing to be good role models. Gloria Pearce Salute to our brave troops in finest of Canadian traditions The feeling begins the minute we first hear the awful news. More of our brave young soldiers have died defending the cause of freedom thousands of kilometres away in Afghanistan. We have to do some- thing to show we care. And that’s just what so many people do time and time again. There they were, out in force to salute the four latest casualties in our seven-year campaign against the Taliban. These brave men -- Corporal Scott Vernelli, 28, Corpo- ral Tyler Crooks, 24, Trooper Jack Bouthilli- er, 20, and Trooper Corey Joseph Hayes, 22 -- gave their lives for a cause, and the hundreds who hit the bridges in Durham Region bedecked with flags and symbols surely recognize their honour, valour and most importantly, their ultimate sacrifice. Their death brings to 116 the number of Canadian troops who have died in Afghan- istan since 2002 and underlines how dan- gerous the mission has been. And for those who may have thought the notion of going down to the Highway of Heroes to salute the fallen was somehow becoming routine, well, that is certainly not the case. Of course, we wish those trips would become less frequent, the need to make them scarce. The notion that our fight- ing men and women are largely victims of roadside bombs and rarely face the enemy in combat makes this war difficult to com- prehend for most. We only know that our soldiers are dying and we can only hope that progress is being made in Afghanistan, that the country is becoming a safer more democratic society, that terrorism will not take root there. However, every time we salute anoth- er solemn cortege down the Highway of Heroes it gives us all pause to think. There are questions about whether Canada should play an active role in continuing beyond 2011 in Afghanistan. Even though U.S. President Barack Obama believes that country is where the war on terror must truly be waged -- not in Iraq where he is eager to pull American troops out -- he might not find a willing partner in Cana- da. For Canadians, despite the ignorance lately of some American Fox News satirists, have been doing the heaviest and bloodi- est fighting in Afghanistan for years now. If we are to continue in Afghanistan, it must be with a lot of help from our Amer- ican allies. Mr. Obama admits that, under his predecessor, the U.S took its eyes off the ball. If the superpower focuses that eye on Afghanistan and delivers its might there and wants Canadian help, it needs to make sure it can deliver. We are a proud people and we will support our troops no matter what, but we can’t feel like we are doing it alone. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com This Week • March 25, 2009newsdurhamregion.comA 6 newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 25, 20097 AP BY STEFANIE SWINSON sswinson@durhamregion.com WHITBY -- Hundreds of people lined the Brock Street bridge in Whitby Monday after- noon to honour four Canadian heroes. “They’re the bravest people I know,” said Leonora Canenzuli of Oshawa as she waved her Canadian flag. Ms. Canenzuli and her daughter Alexis passed out small paper flags to the people in attendance to show they care about the men and women fighting overseas, includ- ing her son Matthew, 27. “I owe it to them,” she said. “That’s why I’m here. These men were my son’s protec- tors.” Mr. Canenzuli is with November compa- ny, the group in which two of the latest fall- en soldiers, Master Cpl. Scott Vernelli and Cpl. Tyler Crooks fought under in Afghani- stan. The pair died in a blast during a morning foot patrol in the Zhari district west of Kan- dahar on Friday. “It’s horrible,” Ms. Canenzuli said. “You’re happy because you know Matthew’s name wasn’t read, but you’re happy at the expense of someone else’s sorrow.” It wasn’t just local residents who showed up to the bridge to pay respects; many came from hours away to watch the procession from the most popular tribute bridge along the Highway of Heroes. A busload of people from Cpl. Crooks’s hometown of Port Colborne watched from a lawn near the roadway when the bridge became too packed. “The numbers are getting bigger,” said OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford. “It’s nice to see.” Bundled up in a blanket, sisters Theresa and Tanya Joanis watched as the procession passed by, carrying the body of one of their childhood friends, Trooper Jack Bouthillier. Trooper Bouthillier and Trooper Corey Joseph Hayes died in a second incident Fri- day when a roadside bomb exploded in the Shah Wali Kot district northwest of Kanda- har. “He was a hyper guy who had the best per- sonality,” Theresa, 19, said as she described Trooper Bouthillier, who she grew up with in Hearst, Ont. “He was so passionate about what he did. He couldn’t wait to go to Afghanistan and get in the middle of the action.” The Joanis sisters travelled from the Uni- versity of Western Ontario with their friend Kathleen Mercier to see the procession that Tanya, 21, said “couldn’t be missed.” Ms. Mercier, 20, knew Trooper Bouthillier from high school, and said she’ll never for- get the last time she saw him. “I served him a meal at McDonald’s last summer,” she said with a smile. “He had said this might be his last year (in the army) and after that he wanted to maybe go to col- lege.” The three girls said they found out about their friend’s death through the social net- working website, Facebook. “I didn’t believe it,” said Theresa. “It really only sunk in when my sister called me and we knew it was real.” The deaths bring to 116 the number of Canadian soldiers who have died as part of the Afghan mission since it began in 2002. “I just don’t understand why there are so many,” said sea cadet Johnathan Wallace, 12, of Whitby. “But I’m here because I want to pay my respects to the troops who have risked their lives to save all of us.” REPATRIATION Record number at Brock Street bridge tribute AJ GROEN / METROLAND WHITBY -- Hundreds of people lined the Brock Street bridge over the Highway of Heroes to honour the four Canadian soldiers who died in Afghanistan recently. DURHAM -- The Durham Region Media Group continues to lead the way in community journalism. The Canadian Community News- paper Association announced March 16 that newsdurhamregion. com was voted best website in Can- ada in the category for large circula- tion community papers. “It’s a great honour for our report- ers, photographers, and editors who’ve made newsdurhamregion. com the best online source for breaking news, sports and enter- tainment in Durham Region,” said Ian Caldwell, online content man- ager. While newsdurhamregion.com is a must-see for residents looking for up-to-date news about their com- munities, it also features a number of innovative features such as geo- coding of all local stories, which allows readers to pinpoint on a map where the news is happening. “A lot of effort went in to making the website user-friendly for our readers, and to create multi-media features like the exclusive News- View maps which you will not see anywhere else,” Mr. Caldwell said. Along with the best website award, the Durham group also received a third-place award for best news story by Chris Hall of the Port Perry Star, third for outstanding commu- nity service, Christmas greetings for our troops, and a third for Oshawa This Week’s Christy Chase, for cov- erage of the arts. The Durham Region Media Group includes Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington This Week, the Ajax- Pickering News Advertiser, Port Perry Star and Uxbridge Times- Journal. 24/7 LOCAL BREAKING NEWS, SPORTS, PHOTOS, VIDEO AND WEATHER ALL DAY EVERY DAY >>newsdurhamregion.comNEWS ADVERTISER 905 68 3 5110 Our website voted best in Canada Education ADVERTISING FEATURE Is your fi ve-year-old worried about getting enough vegetables or exercise? Not likely. If you’re looking for ways to keep your son or daughter healthy and happy, here are some simple ideas: Studies show that by the end of high school, children will have spent 15,000 hours watching TV and only 500 in physical education classes. Limit your child’s TV, computer or video game time to 30 minutes per day. According to Statistics Canada, 70 percent of children are not getting enough fruits and veggies. Make a game out of eating a variety of colours. More colours = more vitamins and nutrients. Find out about the quality of your child’s physical education class at school. Your child should be receiving 150 minutes of physical education per week. Be a great role model to your kids by leading a healthy, active lifestyle yourself. Home-buying intentions in Ontario have increased com- pared to 2008, according to a survey by Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). They are now just below 2007 levels. The poll found 30 per cent of Ontarians said they were likely to purchase a home within the next two years, up from 21 per cent in 2008. The survey was conducted by Ipsos Reid for RBC and polled 2,026 Canadians online. The survey also found: 84 % of Ontario respondents said buying a home is a good or very good investment. 34 % among those who plan to pur- chase this year or next, cited the need for a bigger home. 32 % said they will buy because house prices are attractive. Note: “With mortgage rates and hous- ing prices looking more favour- able than they did last year, many Ontarians are saying now is the time to buy,” RBC vice- president for Mortgages in the GTA Doug Crowe said. “Our sur- vey also showed that an over- whelming majority of Ontarians still feel confident that buying a home is a smart, worthwhile investment.” TRENDsetSUCCESS STORY Ajax store celebrates half a century of home accessories It’s Surefit’s 50th anniversary BY MELISSA MANCINI mmancini@durhamregion.com AJAX -- It’s not hard to keep cus- tomers coming back day after day for five decades if you do one thing, says one local business owner. That one thing is offer good value, said Stephen Barry, owner of Surefit in Ajax. “We offer tremendous value and value does not mean cheap,” he said. It’s good merchandise for a good price, he said. The company maintains great relationships with manufacturers, which helps it get great deals and pass the savings on to consumers, he said. In 1959 the Barry family opened a manufacturing facility in Ajax. The facility was accompanied by a factory outlet, which has grown exponentially since its meek beginning when it was a shop open Saturday mornings that sold fabric remnants. Now the store is busy seven days a week and downright chaotic on weekends and during warehouse sales, retail manager Susan Wright said. “During the warehouse sales there are long lineups, people directing traffic, it’s big,” she said. And just because it is an out- let store doesn’t mean there is no customer service. On a Mon- day morning Ms. Wright is found showing a woman some deals for her daughter’s apartment because the customer isn’t sure exactly what she’s looking for. It’s part of what makes the loca- tion popular, even during difficult economic times like these. “We are actually seeing growth right now because people see us as a reliable source that’s been around,” Mr. Barry said. “You order something and you know we’re going to get it for you.” Another factor that has contrib- uted to the company’s success is its ability to appeal to a wide range of customers, Mr. Barry said. The store attracts customers on both ends of the spectrum, from young adults looking to decorate their dorms or first apartments on the cheap, to clients who want custom drapery made-to-order, he said. The biggest change in the past 50 years has been the customers, who want their dollars to go fur- ther, Mr. Barry said. “The customer is very knowl- edgeable, which suits us very well,” he said. The type of products Surefit sells, like couch slipcovers, also helps buoy the company during a recession. While people may not go out and splurge on a big ticket item like a sofa when the economy is shaky, they will buy to improve what they already have, he said. Throughout the years the com- pany has made sure it doesn’t forget where its customers come from, by staying involved with the community, Mr. Barry said. Surefit’s staff are involved with fundraisers for everything from diseases like Parkinson’s to rais- ing money for Oshawa’s Adelaide House. They also support an assortment of sports teams, from volleyball to hockey to soccer, in a variety of levels of skill and ages. Mr. Barry estimates they help between 30 and 40 teams. “When it comes right down to it, if you support the community, the community will support you,” Mr. Barry said. AJ GROEN / METROLAND PHOTOS AJAX -- Surefit Home Furnishings is celebrating 50 years of being in business. Marketing is one of the most researched business topics and often the most misunderstood. For entrepreneurs, it can become even more confusing with the multitude of marketing experts and compa- nies ranging from strategy to cre- ative to execution specialists. In times like these it is important to keep it simple and focus on a sound strategy that can easily be executed for maximum impact. There is no way to effectively cover a vast topic such as market- ing in one article. However, over the next two months you will learn a few simple techniques to keep you focused and some cost-effec- tive marketing tools for small- and medium-size businesses. During times of economic uncer- tainty, the tendency for most busi- nesses is to “pull back” on market- ing. In 2009, challenge that mind- set. Resist pulling back and instead move forward using effective and efficient methods of communicat- ing how your products or servic- es can help solve your customers’ problems. Learn the “ART” of mar- keting: • Audience – Who is your ideal client? Not who you want, but who will buy? If you can’t define them, you can’t find them. Go beyond the typical demographic data and understand what makes them tick. What are their passions and val- ues? What are their fears and wor- ries? What makes them happy and what frustrates them? The better you know your audience the more effective your marketing will be. Tip: Start with your current clients. Often 80 per cent of sales increases can come from existing clients by just understanding their needs bet- ter. They can also help you create messages for new prospects. • Revelation – Create a WOW fac- tor; build top-of-mind awareness. What is your message? What is your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)? Communicate the benefits of doing business with you, not the features of your products or service. Answer the question, “What’s in it for me?”, for your clients and prospects. Tip: Look at what companies in similar industries do over and over again as a hint to successful messages. • Tools – Only once you have the audience defined and the revela- tion developed can you effectively leverage the right tools. The prob- lem is that most businesses rely on the same old tools to deliver the message which is often not cost- effective or efficient. You need to think outside the box to get noticed and drive the purchase. The three most cost-effective marketing tools are rarely leveraged by small busi- ness but with the right execution can deliver breakthrough results. Knowledge without application is useless. There has never been a more important time to apply what you learn and take action to execute focused plans. This article focused on the mindset and mar- keting strategy required to succeed. Take a crack at defining your audi- ence and revelation immediately. Next month the focus will be on three of the most powerful, cost- effective marketing tools. The local businesswoman is the owner of Chez La Barre, a decorat- ing company she started a year ago. Ms. La Barre’s designs have gotten her some choice decorating jobs, from creating a display window to redesigning million-dollar homes. Ms. La Barre completed the Self- Employment Benefit Program after being referred by a family member. She learned the ropes of the busi- ness world and now makes her liv- ing decorating, something she said she’s always been passionate about. She graduated from the program in December and has had steady con- tracts since then. But it’s her commitment to the community that got her an Impact Award from the Ontario Self- Employment Benefit program, co- ordinator Peter Miller said. Her busy work life didn’t stop her from continuing with her long-time volunteer work with St. Vincent’s Kitchen in Oshawa. St. Vincent’s provides low-cost daily meals to those in need. “Her business has taken off because of the quality of service she provides,” Mr. Miller said. “But she deserves this award because she is so dedicated to giving back to the community.” For more on Chez La Barre visit www.chezlabarre.ca. PICKERING TAKE YOUR PICK AT Competition ‘feels excellent’, says participant BY JENNIFER STONE jstone@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- More than 180 athletes took to the pool at the Pickering Recreation Complex Sunday, as the Canadian Progress Club, Dur- ham Region Women, hosted a Special Olym- pics Swim meet. For many of the athletes, the chance to com- pete was also an opportunity to have a good time. “It’s good,” said Andrew Boyd, an Oshawa swimmer. “If there’s competition out there, I enjoy it. It’s so fun.” Fresh from a race, Pickering’s Blake Feetham was able to share what goes through his mind when he hits the pool. “Swim hard, kick hard, move your arms,” he said. Racing feels “excellent,” he added. Feetham’s mother, Myrna, has been involved in Special Olympics for two decades and says the competition is “awesome” for her son. “It keeps him busy, out of the house, away from the TV,” she said. “It’s been good -- it’s kept him slim.” Six teams, from Lindsay, Northumberland and Pickering, a group which encompasses athletes from Oshawa as well, were on hand for the event. The 183 swimmers took part in an array of events, doing all the various swim- ming strokes, said Heather Smith, one of the event’s organizers. It’s hard work to get in shape for the compe- tition, said Pickering’s Lindsey Smith. “I work pretty hard and do a lot of training,” she said, noting it pays off. “Before I start a race, I feel really proud and feel happy that everybody’s enjoying what they’re doing,” she said.newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 25, 200925 APSportsBrad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.com TENNIS Amberlea Tennis Club registration DURHAM -- Amberlea Tennis Club is holding two registration dates on Satur- day, March 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again on Tuesday, April 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Both registrations will be held at the Pickering Recreation Complex, 1867 Valley Farm Road, in the upstairs meeting room. HOCKEY Dunbarton tops at Brian English Tournament PICKERING -- Dunbarton didn’t have to go far to win a tournament champion- ship, claiming the title at the 5th annual Brian English Memorial Hockey Tourna- ment hosted by St. Mary. Dunbarton doubled All Saints 4-2 in the championship game, with Tyler Tilford named MVP for the winning side, while the sportsmanship award went to Mark Coglan. Dunbarton reached the final with a 3-1 victory over host St. Mary, while All Saints handled Paul Dwyer by a 4-1 count in the other semifinal. Other teams competing were Pine Ridge, Clarington, Denis O’Connor, Pickering and Eastdale. HOCKEY No repeat for Ajax Juveniles AJAX -- The Ajax Juvenile hockey team failed in its bit to repeat as OMHA Champions, losing to a determined Richmond Hill Stars team. Going into Game 5 down five to three in points, the hometown boys never got fully on tract in their efforts to force a sixth game. Ajax had to fight back from one- goal deficits twice, but could not over- come penalty difficulties in the third period, finally giving up an empty net goal to make the final score a respect- able 4-2. Ajax will spend the next two weeks preparing to play in the Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF) championships which they host on the weekend of April 10- 12 at the Ajax Community Centre. The other teams participating in this tourna- ment will be Vaughan Rangers, Hum- berview Huskies, Quinte West and the OMHA champion Richmond Hill Stars. Ajax opens the tournament against the Quinte West Hawks at 11:30 a.m. on April 10. Zach Fedak led the team with four golds in the 50-, 100-, and 200-metre freestyle events and in the 100-metre butterfly, which he won by nearly a full second, mak- ing Senior Nationals in that event. Fedak showed his versatility with a bronze in the 200-metre butter- fly, dropping nearly 30 seconds in an event he has raced only twice. Michelle Fleming, 16, won both the 100-metre and 200-metre breaststroke events in the 16- 17 Girls category, shattering the existing meet records in both. Fleming is rapidly closing in on the AAC club record in both swims. Devin Ste. Marie found the podium four times, taking home gold in three swims, the 50 free- style, breaking the meet record by nearly one second; the 100- metre butterfly, breaking a 25- year-old club record; and the 200-metre butterfly. She won sil- ver in the 100 free. Adding to Ajax’s medal count was Alex Andrechuk, winning bronze in the 200 breaststroke and making Senior Nationals in the event. Alex swam to a new best time in the 100 breaststroke (and made Nationals) in the first half of that 200-metre race and qualified for Eastern Canadians in the 400 freestyle and the 200 IM. Julien Dodu appeared in finals five times, breaking the one-min- ute barrier in both the 100 fly and back. Dodu qualified for Eastern Canadians in the free, IM and fly, and in the 200 backstroke he won bronze, his first individual pro- vincial medal. Joining in on the action was Robert Gilchrist, who picked up silver in the 200 fly and bronze in the 100-metre event. Gilchrist also found the podium in the 50 freestyle. Connor Greenley was a finalist five times, winning silver in the 50 freestyle. Cassidy Blackwin struck gold in the 800 freestyle, lowering her best time by over 30 seconds and closing in on the age group national standard for 12-year- olds—after turning 11 only three months ago. Breaststroker Karolina Gnat finished 5th in the 100 breast- stroke with a new lifetime best, while men’s breaststroker James Stock appeared in finals in both the 100- and 200-metre breast- stroke. Freestyler Kirah Monks qualified for Eastern Canadians for the first time in the 400 free- style. Eight-year-old Aryanna Fer- nandes, in her first provincials, was the youngest qualifier in the pool. Youngsters Steven Taylor and Ryan Kelly also made their first trip to provincials. Taylor dropped nearly 10 seconds in the 100 butterfly and swam to 6th SWIMMING place. Relays were a weekend high- light. The 14-15 men’s team (Greenley, Dodu, Curtis Voth, Gilchrist) took home gold in both the 4x50 and 4x100 freestyle races, breaking meet records in both. The 16-17 Men’s 4x50 med- ley relay (Dodu, Stock, Greenley, Fedak) snagged silver, while both the 15-17 women’s teams fin- ished 4th (4x50 freestyle: Monks, Fleming, Gnat, Ste. Marie; 4x50 Medley: Ste. Marie, Andrechuk, Fleming, Monks). Ajax was once again the top Durham team, scoring points and winning medals in all four strokes, and in distances from 50 to 800 metres.
