Located on the north side of the road, east from the purple and white sign reading “Hwy. 7 widening starting 2009,” the white house they live in is being expropriated. The widening is being done from Brock Road in Pickering to Hwy. 12 in Whitby. They knew the expro- priation was coming, but thought they’d have more time to find somewhere else, she added. “We just got notice yesterday from our landlord saying we were going to have to move in April,” Ms. Smith said in mid- February, standing at the side door to the house, tea towel in hand. “We thought we’d get more notice than that.” She said she guesses the widening is needed because there’s a lot of traffic in the morning. Right now, Hwy. 7 is the “unofficial extension of the 407,” said Shazmin Madhani, who works at the Greenwood Convenience gas station just down the road from Ms. Smith’s house. “The only reason the traffic is what it is, is because the 407 is here,” Mr. Mad- hani said, and added that’s just based on his own observations. When it’s extended, the traffic will fol- low, but if Hwy. 407 isn’t going to be expanded for years to come, then they need it right now, he said. But the Hwy. 7 widening and Hwy. 407 expansion serve different purposes, said Will MacKenzie, central region informa- tion officer for the Ministry of Transpor- tation. “We already have a lot of growth, but there’s going to be a lot more,” Mr. MacKenzie said. In 10 to 20 years both projects will be needed. The expansion also isn’t just about traffic — Hwy. 7 serves as a significant economic and community link through- out Durham, he said. And it’s a significant tourism hub. Closer to Whitby, Robert Jackson will lose 20 feet of his front yard for the Hwy. 7 widening, but the project is needed, he said. “If you live on this road in rush hour, you want four lanes because it’s stupid,” Mr. Jackson said. Traffic is packed from Brooklin to Brougham, Mr. Jackson said. What bothers him is the Hwy. 407 link that will run right beside his driveway. “They haven’t even approached us about purchasing our property,” Mr. Jackson said. The house will probably be safe, but he doesn’t want the highway right beside him. “I’m here because of the privacy,” he said. Mr. Jackson has lived in the home for 15 years. He once owned the house, but he leases it now. The Hwy. 407 project includes two north and south-bound links between Hwy. 401 and Hwy. 407 — one in Clar- ington and the other in Whitby, Mr. MacKenzie said. Currently, the project is waiting on Ministry of Environment’s approval, which is required before negotiations can begin. When they do, contact will be made with the property’s registered owner. •PROJECT TIME LINES -Preliminary design – complete spring 2008 -Detail design – spring 2008 to spring 2010 -Property acquisition – summer 2008 to late 2009/early 2010 -Utilities relocation – summer 2009 to spring 2010 -Construction – 2009 - advance east Duffins Creek bridge contract -Construction – 2010 to 2012 – overall widen- ing contract • TRAFFIC -Daily volume on that stretch of Hwy. 7 is 15,000. •PROJECT COST -$77M •JOBS CREATED -900 jobs are anticipated. FAST FACTS About expropriations The Expropriations Act is designed to protect landowners’ rights, said Will MacKenzie, central region information officer for the Ministry of Trans- portation. Under the law, the government is required to pay fair market value for a property it needs — expropriation being the last resort. Even though the Ministry is sending out expropriation notices, it’s still negotiating ambivalent agreements with landown- ers, through which it has to pay “fair market value.” The Ministry brings an assessor, and if the property owner doesn’t agree with their estimate, they can hire their own. “And we’ll pay for it,” Mr. MacKenzie said. “We do what we can to bend over backwards.” The Hwy. 7 expansion will use land from both sides of the road. “For the most part, we’re just tak- ing a small strip of land from each side,” he said. In some cases, where a house or building is too close to the road, they buy the whole property. If someone doesn’t want to give up their parcel and feels the road widening is not necessary, they can get a lawyer, paid for by the ministry, and go to a hearing of necessity. At the hearing, the onus is on the ministry to prove why it’s requesting expropria- tion. “They just can’t say, ‘I don’t want you to take it, so you can’t have it,’” he said. If the issue of contention surrounds pricing, they can go to a board of negotiations, which is rare, and if they’re still not happy after that, they can take it to the Ontario Municipal Board for a binding deci- sion, he said. In cases such as Hwy. 407, where prop- erty owners know in advance their land will be required, they can approach the Ministry and ask for an advance purchase — but the Ministry can’t approach the owner and propose it, Mr. MacKenzie said. 15,000 Daily volume on that stretch of Hwy. 7 $77,000,000 Project cost 900 Anticipated job creation THREE from page 1 newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 20, 20093 Redfords Insurance Brokers LimitedRedfords Insurance Brokers Limited 1903 Valley Farm Road Pickering ON L1V 1X6 wredford@pbnet.ca • HOME • AUTO • COMMERCIAL • MOTORCYCLE • LIFE •• HOME • AUTO • COMMERCIAL • MOTORCYCLE • LIFE • 905 831 5244 “What are your neighbours paying for insurance?” Call Redfords Insurance for expert local advice you can trust “Explore your options” AP Union says members treated like ‘second class citizens’ BY JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- Hundreds of workers from the Region’s long-term care homes took their beef to the streets Monday afternoon, stag- ing a large demonstration outside the Hill- sdale Terraces nursing home in Oshawa. The employees have been without a con- tract for almost a year and are frustrated with the latest offer from the Region of Durham. Jan Tutton, president of CUPE Local 132 -- which represents the roughly 1,000 long- term care home workers employed by the Region -- said the sticking point is bene- fits. “We’re providing care on the front lines, we’re doing heavy physical labour, we’re exposed to things like flu out- breaks,” she said. “And yet, the Region doesn’t want to give us the same health benefits as its other employees.” For example, Ms. Tutton said other Regional employees have drug cards that allow their prescrip- tion drug costs to be filed directly with the insurance company, while her members are left paying out of pocket for drugs, then waiting for insurance to send a cheque. “It’s like we’re second-class citizens. We’re the lowest paid employees of the Region, a lot of people can’t afford that,” she said. “Sometimes they’re going with- out medication.” Garth Johns, commissioner of human resources for the Region, said CUPE Local 132 members are the authors of their own misfortune. “We offered a deal before Christmas that, for all intents and purposes was the same as what other Regional employees were getting,” he said. “We told them to sign quick because the economy is going south fast, but they wanted to try to squeeze more out of us... and now the economy is the way it is and it’s too late.” Mr. Johns also clarified that it’s only part- time workers who are currently without drug cards. Members of Local 132 can’t strike because of the essential service they pro- vide. The next step is to take the matter to arbitration. “The Region is going to have to pay law- yers to arbitrate a settlement, it’s a waste of resources,” said Fred Hahn, secretary trea- surer for CUPE Ontario. The Region operates four long-term care facilities housing 847 residents -- Hillsdale Terraces and Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa, Fairview Lodge in Whitby and Lakeview Manor in Beaverton. CUPE 132 members provide everything from housekeeping and cooking to per- sonal support services and nursing. “We care for these people like they’re our family,” said Margaret Hamilton, a per- sonal support worker for 33 years. “Why should someone who changes a light bulb or types a letter get treated better than people who work with human lives?” LABOUR Region’s nursing home workers seek contract OSHAWA -- Hundreds of Durham Region long-term care workers and their support- ers rallied at the Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa recently. Rally for EI reform takes to Oshawa streets BY JEFF HAYWARD jhayward@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- Collecting Employment Insur- ance is not the only challenge faced by those recently let go from their jobs, Oshawa pro- testers said on Saturday. While a group made up of unionized and non-unionized workers gathered in front of Oshawa MP Dr. Colin Carrie’s office on Simcoe Street Saturday morning to rally for Employment Insurance (EI) reform, some said getting EI is not so much the problem as is what to do after it runs out. Local resident Marissa Kata initiated the rally, motivated after her father was laid off from his long-time manufacturing job and had trouble getting EI. “There were so many delays and so much red tape, it took a month for him to get a dime,” she said. John Riley, who joined the rally, worked for General Motors in Oshawa for 13 years. He said he didn’t have any trouble qualify- ing for EI benefits, which run out at the end of the year. “I was really lucky with the EI (pro- cess),” he said. But now he’s looking at his options, such as returning to school for re-training. At 59 years old, he said he’s not holding out hope to return to a good-paying job. “I was looking at a course (at a college)... they told me there’s no point taking a two- year course,” said Mr. Riley. Connie Snelgrove, of the CAW Local 222 Action Centre, said those aged 40 and older are harder to employ after they are let go from their positions. And some who can’t find work are taking transit outside the region to work for $10 per hour because they can’t afford to drive, she said. Chris Buckley, Local 222 president, also made an appearance at the protest and spoke of life after benefits. “There are no good jobs to be found; there is no employment to be found,” said Mr. Buckley. He said more than 500,000 jobs have been lost country-wide in the past four- and-a-half years. Paul Cloutier, director of income and employment support for the Region of Dur- ham, said that is a concern, as well as the fact that many people don’t qualify for EI at all. “When people don’t qualify or their bene- fits run out, Ontario Works is what’s available to them,” he said. Mr. Cloutier said the Region initially fore- cast its Ontario Works caseload would increase by eight per cent in 2009, and there is now the possibility that it could be even higher. “Things have gotten more difficult more quickly than we anticipated, we’re hop- ing eight per cent is still accurate,” he said. Last year, the caseload jumped by almost 10 per cent, a stark contrast with several years back when the annual increase averaged two or three per cent. Dr. Carrie wasn’t able to attend the rally, but said he was frustrated by the partisan, “anti-Conservative” nature of the event. He stressed the EI system is working well, saying the Harper government recently extended EI benefits by five weeks, retroac- tive to March 1, 2009. The maxiumum is now 50 weeks, as opposed to 45. - with files from Jillian Follert ECONOMY Life after benefits looks bleak, say protesters AJ GROEN / METROLAND OSHAWA -- Members of local unions, churches and other organizations picketed MP Dr. Colin Carrie’s riding office seeking improvements to the unemployment Insurance program. March 9 - April 9, 2009 newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 20, 20095 AP Durham asked to look at what other places do BY KEITH GILLIGAN kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- A plan to offer loans to homeowners in Ajax and Whitby who have suffered base- ment flooding has been put on hold until April. Ajax Councillor Colleen Jordan asked that Durham Region hold off on the loan program until more information can be gathered on ways to help flood victims. Durham proposes offering loans of up to $3,000 to residents on Lawrie Road in Ajax and Annes Street in Whitby, some of whom have seen their basements flood- ed several times. The loans would pay for a qualified plumber to install a back flow regulator or a sump pump. Coun. Jordan wants Regional staff to look at how other munici- palities deal with similar situa- tions, specifically if subsidies or grants are offered to affected hom- eowners. While other municipalities may offer financial help, “We give them nothing. All we say is there’s a risk in putting in back flow regulator or a sump pump. We say nothing else,” Coun. Jordan said during the Regional council meeting on Wednesday. “The Region keeps looking; meanwhile the residents have to live through the spring and sum- mer,” Coun. Jordan said. “Some of them can’t get insurance.” Regional staff prefer a loan pro- gram, as it could limit the liability Durham could face. Some homeowners can’t get flood or water-damage insurance, she said. If a homeowner can’t get flood insurance, “What’s the liability to us if they start looking at us?” she asked. The staff report didn’t include what other municipalities do, including the types of subsidies and grants that are offered, she said. A back flow regulator or a sump pump is a “band aid” and not a solution, she said, adding the flooding is “a horrendous, horren- dous situation.” She asked for it to be referred back to staff, to get a report “with some real information on how to help these residents.” INFRASTRUCTURE Loans to flood victims in Ajax delayed LOCAL BREAKING NEWS, SPORTS, PHOTOS, VIDEO AND WEATHER: ALL DAY, EVERY DAY >>newsdurhamregion.com & A Metroland Media Group Ltd. All content copyright Editorial Opinions ECONOMY It’s not fair to blame unions for economic problems To the editor: People really need to realize the impor- tance of a union. First, we do get paid very well, good ben- efits, etc. This country was built by union people whether it is electricians, plumbers, car- penters and, oh yes, autoworkers, etc. I think people should lay blame where it is deserved. The TD bank CEO made $11 million last year. The Bank of Nova Scotia CEO made $7.5 million and so on and to think it’s our money that enables them to receive this unrealistic salary. But wait, let’s blame the union, especially the CAW. Time to wake up. TD has recently announced that the recession will last into 2010. Let the CEOs keep lining their pockets at our expense. Glen Morton RECESSION Don’t blame teachers’ unions either for problems To the editor: Re: Blame the right people for the recession, Lloyd Clarke letter, March 11. I was grateful Lloyd Clarke touched on the issue of blame. However, after making the point that the Canadian Auto Workers membership isn’t to blame, he attempts to shift blame on the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario for refusing to sign what it saw as an unfair contract. In doing so, he is ignoring that wages weren’t the primary issue, securing ade- quate funding for elementary students comparable to their high schools counter- parts was. He also is engaged in the same blame- shifting tactics of those he was condemn- ing in his letter. Now is the time for increased solidarity among unions. Stop placing blame where it does not belong, on other unions, and start focusing on where the real problems lie. Unions fighting for wages and conditions and social justice aren’t to blame for the current mess. If the working class wants those in power (corporate management and the state) to listen, it must speak unified, in solidarity with other labour unions, as well as with those of the working class employed in non-union workplaces. Anything else will only weaken us. Dan Roberts AUTO INDUSTRY How did GM fall on such hard times? To the editor: The workers are not to blame for the mess GM is in so shouldn’t be punished because they get a good wage. Who wouldn’t like to make this wage? It is tough for anyone to take a cutback but worse to lose it all, too. I don’t understand how the CEO or who- ever GM has in management runs the place this poorly and why it was ever allowed to go this far. Someone should be accountable for this and I haven’t heard of the top ones getting fired. If cars aren’t selling now, how can this government loan ever be paid back? It is just not realistic. Who are we trying to kid? If a private business was not making money, I would think you would start to sell off some of your assets. Why not GM? I don’t think we’ve heard the true story as to why this could be allowed to happen and no one could see it. I realize we can’t predict the future but can someone please explain how this could happen? Mary Elliott Make Employment Insurance fair, simple to understand With a jobless rate higher than it’s been in decades it’s easy to see why so many local people are worried about employ- ment insurance. Never in a generation have so many come to rely on a system to be there for them in their time of need. And, to judge by recent protests outside MPs’ offices in Oshawa and Whitby, they are finding EI wanting. Part of the problem stems from the confusion to be found at the heart of the system and the plethora of rules, regu- lations and a tangled web surrounding qualification for getting EI. Go to the Service Canada website and you’ll find a long, winding list of com- plicated questions and answers only an accountant could truly figure out. There are waiting periods which vary from two to four weeks. If your unem- ployment rate is under six per cent you must have worked 700 hours in the previ- ous 52 weeks to claim EI. If it is over 13.1 per cent you must have worked 420 hours. There are nine, yes, that’s nine, insurable hour rates to qual- ify for EI, ranging from a low of under six per cent rate of unemployment in your region to 13.1 per cent and over. And it goes on and on and on. In Dur- ham Region alone, there are three differ- ent qualifying periods. To get paid EI you have to complete a telephone or Internet report every two weeks or the payments stop. Beyond all the confusion is the sheer unfairness of the system, which has many Canadians upset. There should not be nine different lev- els of unemployment used and those liv- ing in north, southeast and southwest Durham Region shouldn’t be sliced into three different regions to qualify for EI. That kind of subdivision doesn’t speak to fairness. The federal government, having built up a multi-billion-dollar surplus on the backs of contributions from employers and employees over the past few decades, should use the EI surplus to help those who need it most. The federal government should reduce the waiting period for EI, top up the ben- efits provided, increase accessibility, and make sure the program is there for all those who qualify. Everyone who pays into Employment Insurance for years on end, should get the benefit of EI when they are in the unfortunate position of being out of work. The system needs to be simplified and it needs to be fair. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 20, 2009P 6 WE THINK... email responses to newsroom@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 20, 20097 P Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Ontario Equestrian Federation Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association Uxbridge Horsemen’s Association Equine Guelph University of Guelph Ontario Trail Riders Association Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority Credit Valley Conservation Kawartha Conservation Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority Toronto and Region Conservation A FREE, interactive workshop for the equine community Saturday, April 4, 2009 • 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.(refreshments and sign-in at 9 a.m.) Goodwood Community Centre (268 Highway 47 at Regional Road 21) Healthy Lands for Healthy Horses In partnership with: Each participa n t receives : morning c o f f e e and lunch • The role of the equine community in a changing environment – find out about current environmental issues and what you, as a horse owner, can do to make a difference with Dr. Bronwynne Wilton from the University of Guelph. • Meet your neighbours! That’s why last week he intro- duced a private member’s bill that will require all new munici- pal and provincial public build- ings to be equipped with a visual fire alarm system. Although the bill requires final approval in the future, Mr. Arthurs said it’s been well received by other MPPs. “The implementation costs would be very minimal in the context of building a new build- ing,” he said in a phone inter- view. Although the Visual Fire Alarm System Act won’t require old buildings to be retrofitted to incorporate the new system, Mr. Arthurs hopes the new law will set a standard. “Ideally it would be a strong signal for others to follow suit,” he said. President and CEO of the Cana- dian Hearing Society, Kelly Duf- fin, said in a press release Mr. Arthurs’s introduction of the bill is a critical step in moving Ontar- io closer to safeguarding the peo- ple who are deaf, oral deaf, deaf- ened and hard of hearing. “Current laws mandate the installation of traditional audi- tory fire alarms, which are com- pletely inaccessible to people who are deaf or have a hearing loss.” SAFETY MPP Arthurs calls for visual fire alarms newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 20, 20098 AP Vacations Made You Feel Guilty About Leaving Mom Alone 70 Station Street,Ajax 905-683-7321 Ballycliffe Lodge Call us at 905-683-7321 or visit www.chartwellreit.ca. The new one-year certificate program is intended to provide additional student pathways and capture favourable funding from the Province’s Second Career Strate- gy, according to a report recently presented to the Durham College board of governors. Business fundamentals, the new pro- gram, should provide a basic understand- ing of business practices. It runs for two semesters and is designed for students right out of high school, career changers, or those who want to add to their creden- tials. It qualifies as a program for the Sec- ond Career Strategy. It uses curriculum from the school’s busi- ness administration program’s first year, eliminating any development costs. WHITBY -- A 24-year-old Pickering man has been charged with impaired and dangerous driving after a crash on Hwy. 401 in Whitby recently. At about 4:30 a.m. last Thursday, motor- ists called police when they saw a pickup truck driving at a high rate of speed on Hwy. 401. By the time police arrived, the truck had hit another truck and the centre guard- rail before coming to rest in the north side ditch near Hwy. 401 and Brock Street. The pickup then burst into flames. The driver, who was not injured, was able to get out. When police arrived, they arrested a 24-year-old Pickering man. His name has not been released. The westbound lanes of Hwy. 401 were closed between Thickson Road and Brock Street for approximately 90 minutes to allow removal of debris and treatment of the icy condition on the roadway created by water from fire department response. Home Sweet HomeADVERTISING FEATURE (NC)-For most Canadians, spending time with family and friends on the patio or in the back- yard is a warm-weather ritual. Despite the size of your outdoor space, it is still simple to create a stylish and relaxing space to enjoy all season long. As you begin to think about creating your outdoor room, the team at Canadian Tire has put together the following tips to help you to choose the best outdoor pieces to fit your space and lifestyle. Balconies: If you live in a condominium or apartment, your options will depend on the size of your balcony. If the balcony is small, consider a bistro table and chair set or a comfy outdoor recliner set. Available at Canadian Tire this sea- son is the Lazy Boy madison recliner that allows you to relax in three adjustable positions. To keep clutter away, consider adding the Lazy Boy madison cushion bench - not only is this piece great storage for trays or glasses; it can also double as additional seating for guests. Backyards: Transforming a backyard into a comfortable outdoor space is easier than you think. Before making your purchase, consider how you will most often use the pieces you pur- chase: • If you prefer to relax, try adding some ac- cessory furniture such as a lounger. Accessory furniture can be used as great add-ons to exist- ing sets and are great pieces for lounging with a book on a sunny day. • If you like to have intimate visits, a conver- sation set is a great choice for relaxing with a friend or loved one. If space allows, consider the enso conversation set, available at Canadian Tire, which is perfect for cozy conversation or stretching out and relaxing on your own. • If family-style barbeques are more your style, a larger dining set is a good choice. There are many different options for dining, each with stylish umbrellas and fabric patterns to fit each individual taste. Home Sweet HomeADVERTISING FEATURE The Recycling Council of Ontario says 35 per cent of municipal solid waste comes from packaging. Con- sider product packaging before you buy and choose alternatives that minimize waste. Future Friendly, a partnership be- tween the Recycling Council of Ontario, Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance, canühome and some of Canada’s lead- ing home care brands, like Tide, Bounty, Cascade, Charmin, Downy and Dura- cell, encourages consumers to consider small changes that reduce energy con- sumption and waste. The following tips, the ‘3Cs of consumer waste reduction’, are designed to reduce what you throw out without adding hassles to your hectic life: 1. Choose products that reduce packaging Manufacturers are making efforts to limit packaging so picking products with less can go a long way to reduce waste. Future Friendly’s Charmin Mega Rolls have four times more sheets per role than a regular Charmin roll resulting in fewer roll changes and fewer discarded cardboard cores - the longer lasting roll is something the family will love. 2. Conserve the products you use Using products sparingly means buy- ing less often - and that means less packaging at the curb. Use only what you need and follow manufacturer’s instructions - more doesn’t mean more effective. Bounty Select-a-Size sheets are strong and 45 per cent smaller than regular The 3Cs of consumer waste reduction Bounty sheets, allowing you to use only what you need for large and small spills. 3. Concentrate to cut down on waste Concentrated products are smaller and reduce the amount of packaging required. As an example, Ultra Downy fabric softener is 3X concentrated, cutting the amount of plastic in the bottle by 35 per cent, compared with non-concentrated Downy, while still delivering fresh, long- lasting scents. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 20, 200917 AP TB is treatable, preventable and curable!! Forgie began as a landscape painter in the tradition of the Group of Seven, but before long moved to de-emphasize the landscape in favour of the figure, creat- ing his “little people,” imaginary, almost fantastical, figures in surreal and dreamy settings. He calls this his Romantic peri- od. The silhouette then became his focus, changing again into a kind of realism. After a decade-long time-out from paint- ing, when he wrote two books, he arrived where he is now -- for the time being, anyway -- a self-described “high realist” in a pointilistic style using high-keyed colour and thinly-applied paint. Along the way Forgie has been a stone- ware sculptor, a photographer (using old pin-hole or box cameras), worked in oils, watercolours and pen-and-ink. He’s had many shows and his work is in collections in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. However amidst all this change and activity his aim has been to create a sense of peace and silence in his work. “It’s always been that way,” he says. “There is a peace; you feel comfortable. There’s nothing to jar you or impact you, but there’s an underlying, almost haunt- ing, realism.” He says a collector who owns his work once told him, “It’s rather frightening; everything is on the surface.” Born in the heart of downtown Toron- to of Scottish parentage, Forgie is mar- ried with five children and taught art and photography in high school to support his family. As in his artistic life, his work- ing life contains a lot of variety, including stints as a house painter and an assistant manager at a grocery store. He lives in east Scarborough but is a long-time regular at the Pickering Mar- kets, where he and his wife restore old and vintage lighting. Given his resume, it’s not surprising to hear Forgie say he’s had “a very busy” and a “fascinating” life. “I’ve done everything,” he says. DATE Until April 4 ADDRESS 62 Old Kingston Rd. The Ajax resident has shown his work in solo and group shows and self-published two books of poetry combined with black- and-white photography. His recent work, the My Landscapes series of paintings, reflects his roots in and love of the Bancroft area and his adopted home. His work is generally realistic in style. O’Marra is exhibiting photographs until May 4 at the Ontario Power Generation Information Centre at 1675 Montgomery Park Rd., near the south end of Brock Road. The centre is open to the public Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and admis- sion is free. The exhibition is part of the PineRidge Arts Council’s Art in Public Places initiative. The ceremony recognized the many players moving on to uni- versity next year and honoured their years of commitment to the organization. Returning players formed a ‘crossed sticks’ archway for all graduating players to skate through and each player was pre- sented with a rose, a certificate of graduation and included on this year’s Graduation Banner. The experience of the graduating players ranged from one year to an amazing 13 seasons with the organization. This year’s graduating play- ers are: Kim Caggiula (goalie), Kailey Chappell (defence), Jame Hatheway (forward), Kaitlyn Hill (forward), Andrea LeDon- ne (defence), Christina Paterson (defence), Jessica Ronald (for- ward), Danielle Skirrow (for- ward), Elisabeth Stathopulos (for- ward), Jessica Vella (forward) and Alannah Wakefield (defence). Earlier, the Lightning played through to a medal-round game at the OWHL Provincial Champi- onships, ending in fourth place. The Lightning won two of their final three games to clinch sixth place in the PWHL league. The Lightning faced the Burlington Junior Barracudas (5-1 for Dur- ham), Toronto Junior Aeros (4-1 loss, the last goal an empty-net- ter) and a Sunday afternoon win against the Brampton Junior Thunder with a 4-3 outcome. In the first round of playoffs, the Lightning are tied 1-1 with the Whitby Junior Wolves in a best- of-five series. CURLING Emotional hangover hurts Hart at Brier Ontario rink ousted in semifinals BY BRAD KELLY bkelly@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- It would be fair to say a hangover incurred by Pickering curler Richard Hart and his teammates on the Glenn Howard rink contributed to their exit from the Tim Horton’s Brier. It wasn’t the type of hangover that lingers after a late night at the pub, but rather, an emotional one that stuck with the team after two close losses to eventual national champion Kevin Martin. “It was a pretty good week right up to the end. Everything went according to plan,” Hart said from his home on Wednesday after a gruelling week in Calgary. Indeed, the Ontario rink skipped by Howard was coast- ing with a 9-1 mark, setting up a showdown with the undefeated Alberta rink skipped by Martin in the final round-robin game. Mar- tin bested Howard 7-5, setting up a play-in game the following day between the top two seeds, with the winner advancing to the final and the loser forced to play a semifinal game. Hart and his team came up short once again, this time 7-6, and the lingering effect of that loss contributed to their elimina- tion in an 8-6 setback to the Jeff Stoughton rink from Manitoba the following day in the semifi- nals. “It really was an emotional drain for us and we came out flat the next day against Stoughton, who are also a great team, but one we feel we should be able to beat,” Hart said. “We were still injured from that loss to Martin. We were emotion- ally drained. It took so much out of us and we had put so much into it that we were left with no real spark the next day for what was an important game and we just couldn’t get past it. “It was fun to be involved in games like those, but it really takes its toll on you. I still feel like I’m recovering.” Martin went on to beat Stough- ton in the final, punching a tick- et to Moncton, NB, where he will get the opportunity to defend his world championship. Hart will take the next three weeks off before returning to play in the tour championship in Grand Prairie, AL. Beyond that, Hart and his team have already qualified for the Olympic Trials in December, with the winner representing Canada at the 2010 Games in Vancouver. Hart repre- sented Canada at the 1998 Olym- pic Games in Nagano, Japan. Durham West Lightning graduate players to next level PHOTO BY LAURA STANLEY WHITBY-- Teammates of the Durham West Lightning celebrate after scoring their second goal in the second period during the second game of the Provincial Women’s Hockey league playoff series against the Whitby Wolves. Durham West won the game 5-4 to even the series at a game apiece after dropping the opener 4-3. Game 3 is Saturday in Ajax at 7:30 p.m. HOCKEY OMHA PLAYOFFS Knights facing elimination AJAX -- The Ajax Knights Juvenile hockey team is facing a gargantu- an struggle (to quote Danny Gal- livan) in their attempt to repeat as winners of the OMHA cham- pionship. They must win Game 5 at home against Richmond Hill to force the series to a sixth game in order to repeat as champions. The series opener ended in a 3-3 tie after both teams failed to score in overtime. In Game 2 Richmond Hill won 3-2, but Game 3 saw Ajax turn the table and take the win 4- 2 and tie the series at three points each. Sunday evening, Richmond Hill wouldn’t quit and took the game by a score of 3-2. This sets the table for a must win game for Ajax on Sunday at the Ajax Community Centre at 8:30 p.m. (ACC No. 1). A win by the hometown boys would force a sixth game in Richmond Hill, while a loss or a tie would give Richmond Hill the OMHA title. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 20, 200921 AP • ESTHETICS • INTRA-ORAL DENTAL ASSISTANT Other Specialized Healthcare Programs Available Call to Enquire •Personal Support Worker • Medical Offi ce Assistant • Medical & General Lab Assistant • Pharmacy Assistant • Medical Lab Assistant • Social Service Worker Scarborough 2130 Lawrence Ave. E. 416-701-1201 Classes Starting SoonClasses Starting SoonClasses Starting SoonClasses Starting Soon CommissionCommission Sales AgentsSales Agents Sell for the North American leader in authentic online website video production. It’s a Mobile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. “The day is gone when you carried some brochures and a sample window to a customer’s home,” explains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window samples.” When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom which you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl windows which you’re free to operate and you’ll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned without going outside. “After being in this business for 26 years, I can honestly say these are the finest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All Vinyl Window Designs windows come with Low E Glass which filters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the summer and eliminate fading of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a lifetime warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Wayne would also like his customers to know that he does all of the estimates personally, eliminating the cost of a salesperson. Durham Windows and Doors also does all of its own installations, which ensures that every customer gets a high quality job done at the best possible price. Durham Windows and Doors is located at 696 King St. W. in Oshawa. Local rink wins St. Pat’s bonspiel at Annandale BY JIM EASON Last week, Annandale held the 44th Annual St. Pat’s Mixed Bonspiel. The overall winning team with first pick of the prize table was a home rink of Craig Jewer, Bonnie Kle- padlo, Dale Neely and Lee Anne Jewer. Second place went to Blair Metrakos, Mar- ilynne Gordon, Andy Gor- don and Courtney Gordon also of Annandale. Of the 26 teams competing, entries came from Winchester, North Granville and Port Perry. The convener, Arlene Joly, said there was positive feedback that the event ran smoothly, and compliment- ed George Nicolaou for his great meals. An Annandale Curling Club team won the A side of the Regional Junior Mixed Playdown in Fenelon Falls on March 8. Josh Hall teamed up with Spencer Anderson, James McPherson, Yvonne Lalonde and coach Donna Hall. They advance to Mar- mora and Area Curling Club from March 25-28 com- pete in the provincial finals. There is no Canadian title for this event. The Ontario men’s cham- pion team skipped by Glenn Howard, with Pickering res- ident Richard Hart at vice, and Brent Laing and Craig Savill competed in their fourth Tim Hortons Brier in a row. The previous three Canadian championships saw Team Howard win their way to the final game, but the team was victorious only in 2007 and went on to be crowned World Champions. This trip, they ended a suc- cessful round robin with a 9- 2 record, but ended with an unprecedented three losses in a row. They were upset in the last round-robin game, then the Page Playoff 1 vs. 2, and then the semifinal. They still come away with cresting revenue and results funds. At the Calgary Brier, all the players had a chance to win the Ford Hot Shots competi- tion with the final on March 7. The Ontario lead, Craig Savill, was the victor and won a two-year lease on a new Ford with a value over $20,000. Richard Hart said that the team enjoyed the crowds showing up to view the com- petition. The total atten- dance was the third ranked coming in at 246,126. The winning team of the 2009 Tim Hortons Brier, Kevin Martin of Alberta, will rep- resent Canada at the Ford World Men’s Curling Cham- pionship in Moncton, NB, April 4-12. 24/7 LOCAL BREAKING NEWS, SPORTS, PHOTOS, VIDEO AND WEATHER >>nnewsdurhamregion.comLocal players ready for OHL playoffs DURHAM -- A host of play- ers from Durham Region will be competing in the OHL playoffs.
