No one was hurt and two people were taken into custody on what Sgt. Woodford predicted would be “multiple” charges. The men, who drive for April’s Tow- ing, were monitoring the pursuit on scan- ners as it unfolded, Mr. Barnes said. Mr. Barnes arrived in Green River as the OPP cruiser turned onto the dead-end dirt road behind the van and watched as the suspects emerged on foot, flagging down a car and jumping inside. The two emerged from that car and flagged down two more. They were in the third vehi- cle when the tow truck drivers descended on them. Mr. Bailey rushed up to the car as the sus- pect tried to coax the bewildered driver to keep going. “He was offering him money to keep driv- ing,” Mr. Bailey said. “I pried the door open and put the (suspect) in a wrist lock and took him to the ground and told him he was under arrest.” Mr. Barnes caught up with the woman when she tried to flee. Mr. Bailey said he thought it necessary to stop the man -- he described him as being in his late 20s or early 30s, about six feet tall and 280 pounds -- before someone got hurt. “It got pretty dangerous,” he said. “We didn’t know what he’d done to the officer or what was going on with him.” Lesley Luck was the driver of the first car the desperate suspects tried to hijack. She said she was westbound on Hwy. 7, on her way to work, when the two walked onto the roadway and flagged her down. “I thought maybe they were in a car acci- dent and rolled down my window but they hopped in my car,” Ms. Luck said. The man screamed at Ms. Luck to drive and when she didn’t he and the woman got out of the car. “After some yelling and screaming they finally got out of the car and I called 911,” she said. Ms. Luck watched as the suspects com- mandeered two other cars in their attempt to escape, only to be thwarted by Mr. Barnes and Mr. Bailey. Sgt. Woodford said the incident began at about 10:30 a.m. when motorists on Hwy. 401 in the Pickering area called police to report a suspected impaired driver. An OPP officer caught up to the U-Haul and attempt- ed to pull it over but the vehicle took off, he said. The van exited the 401 at Westney Road and proceeded north, speeding through red lights, Sgt. Woodford said. Police called the pursuit off for safety reasons and put out a description of the suspect vehicle. OPP soon found the van on Hwy. 407 and followed at a distance as it turned north onto the York-Durham line, then east on Hwy. 7. The officer followed the U-Haul onto the dead end road in Green River. “The vehicle turned and proceeded toward the officer as if the vehicle was going to run him over,” Sgt. Woodford said. “It was that close that the officer had to draw (his gun) and he fired one shot at the vehicle.” The van was driven into the ditch and the man and woman jumped out, ran behind houses and onto Hwy. 7 where they flagged down Ms. Luck’s vehicle, he said. Sgt. Woodford praised the tow truck driv- ers for stepping in when they did. “As a citizen that’s the proper thing to do,” he said. “We’re all in this together.” Mr. Barnes said the way the event unfold- ed left the drivers no choice but to intervene. “People were put at risk,” he said. Mr. Bailey said he didn’t think twice about assisting the police. “We work along side with these officers on a daily basis,” he said. “They would do it for us, so why not back them up?” CHASE from page 1 CRIME Chase ends in north Pickering WATCH the video story @ newsdurhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 13, 20093 AP Protesters want Pickering B reactors mothballed, Province to move on green energy BY REKA SZEKELY rszekely@durhamregion.com PICKERING -- A group of about a dozen Green- peace protesters blockaded an entrance to the Pickering nuclear power plant Thursday in an attempt to draw attention to the Province’s energy plans. The group used a flatbed truck to block the Mont- gomery Park Road entrance. The truck bore a sign reading “Minister, don’t nuke green energy” and four protestors tied themselves to it, two in the cab of the truck and two underneath. The sign targeted Energy and Infrastructure minister George Smith- erman. Others marched in front of the truck with flags bearing their message and occasionally lit orange flares and sounded noisemakers to draw attention. “We’re blocking the gate to the Pickering nuclear station because the McGuinty government is block- ing green energy,” said Shawn-Pat- rick Stensil, an energy and cli- mate campaigner for Greenpeace. The organiza- tion wants Mr. Smitherman to quash the poten- tial refurbishment of the Pickering B reactors and replace it with what Greenpeace considers greener alternatives such as wind power. Protesters said they would continue with their action until they got an answer from Mr. Smitherman on the issue. “If he’s not willing to replace Pickering with green power, he needs to explain to Ontarians why,” said Mr. Stensil, who says the government has been talking green but not backing it up with action. Eryn Wheatley was one of the protesters tied to the truck. “They can’t move the truck without moving us,” she said from her position behind its right front wheel. Mr. Smitherman was unavailable for comment Thursday, said a spokesperson, because he was scheduled to make an announcement on a new tariff program for renewable energy projects. Ontario Power Generation spokesman Bill McKinlay said the protest had no impact on plant operations. He reiterated that in OPG’s view, nucle- ar is green energy. “Nuclear is a source of energy, like hydro-elec- tric, with virtually zero emissions,” he said. The environmental assessment on the Pickering B refurbishment is complete and OPG is currently considering the business case for it. Police were on scene Thursday, simply observing the protesters. “Everyone has the right to lawful assembly and to protest lawfully and we’re here to keep the peace,” said Inspector Sal Naccarato. Eighty-seven per cent vote in favour of new contract BY MELISSA MANCINI mmancini@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- Hourly General Motors employees have ratified a contract of concessions hammered out on the weekend. Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) voted 87 per cent in favour of the new con- tract. In Oshawa, 84 per cent of workers said yes to the deal, with 86 per cent of production workers and 80 per cent of skilled trades workers voting in favour of the agreement. “I have said all along that we have a very intelligent membership and they’ve made a very intelligent deci- sion,” CAW Local 222 president Chris Buckley said. The two parties started bargaining last Thursday and struck a tentative agreement on Sunday. When the bargaining teams emerged from negotiations, concessions in the new contract included the removal of a holiday bonus, wage and benefits freezes and a week less of paid holi- days. The new deal means changes in drug plans for active members and retirees. There will be no cost of living increas- es for active members or pensioners throughout the life of the agreement, which runs until June 2012. “These changes are difficult for our members and retirees, but CAW mem- bers at GM agree that accepting these changes is the best choice under the circumstances,” CAW national pres- ident Ken Lewenza said in a news release. The news that the contract has been ratified is welcome, Oshawa MP Colin Carrie said. “I think that’s a great step, I’m really pleased that the CAW decided to come to the table and work with the govern- ment,” he said. The contract will not be enacted until Canadian government loans are final- ized, Mr. Buckley said. “We’ve done our part as a union,” he said. Now it’s time for the governments to get the loans moving, Mr. Buckley said. I do not question the statistics for wait times in the ERs at the region’s hospitals. They can, however, create the impres- sion critically-ill patients may be left lan- guishing without attention for hours on end. Nothing could be further from the truth. All patients entering an ER department are assessed by a triage nurse. You may be confident no detail of the patient’s condition goes unnoticed by them. If you require immediate attention, you get it. I know from first-hand experience. In late January I was admitted to Lak- eridge Oshawa’s ER at 6 p.m. By 6.45 p.m. I had been seen by a doc- tor and 15 minutes later by a surgeon who told me I required immediate surgery. By midnight I had undergone the sur- gery, been through the recovery room and been installed in my hospital room. I have no doubt my arrival at the ER increased the wait time for a number of patients who were already waiting. I regret that. Isn’t it possible, though, that many non- emergency cases might more quickly and more cheaply be attended to at one of the region’s well-equipped walk-in clinics in order to leave emergency departments to do what they do best? Just an idea to give consideration to. Bernie Gotham DON’T CONGEST We live in Pickering, not Hong Kong To the editor: There are concerns about gridlock at dan- gerous Liverpool and Bayly when 734 new residents of San Fransisco by the Bay will want to get to the GO station. They’ll be in combination with more major traffic to the GO after a needed new parking garage gets built. Two major towers isn’t enough? We’ll add a third 25-storey tower? Councillor Doug Dickerson said the prob- lems of clogging Bayly can be solved if we just “learn to do it like they do it in Hong Kong.” With your help, Coun. Dickerson, these Toronto developers are turning this crucial corner of Pickering into Hong Kong -- setting the template. Coun. Dickerson, listen up. We live in Pickering (not Frisco either come to that!) We want to keep it like that. We do not want to turn into Hong Kong. If this is what Smart Cities for Growth leads to, I fail to see what is so smart about it. Is Hong Kong here what the people of Pickering elected you to implement Coun. Dickerson? Commuters, this is calamity coming soon. Resist. Doris Hopper-Riede Pickering BAD TIME IN ER Wait at hospital too long To the editor: Re: The waiting is the hardest part in local ERs, editorial, March 6. Your editorial came at the right moment. On March 6, I experienced my first long wait at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering. When I saw the number of people in the waiting room, I thought I was in a Third- world country where the doctor only comes once a month and all the villagers come out to see the doctor for their health care. My wait time was four hours and I had to leave because I could not breathe. The waiting room was so congested and filthy. The bathroom was even worse. I could not believe that I was in a health-care facil- ity bathroom. Where you go to register, the nurse throws your health card at you when she finishes taking your information. I thought it was an isolated case until another patient said the same thing. Jennifer Samuels Cosmetic pesticide ban offers green choice for our health Health requirements trump the odd weed A new tough provincial ban on cosmet- ic pesticides will be enacted by the Prov- ince, appropriately enough on Earth Day, April 22. And it simply couldn’t come at a better time. A mountain of evidence has piled up over the years which has linked the use of pes- ticides, especially children’s exposure to them, to increased risk of cancer and other illnesses. That proof and the work of committees and groups who have studied the issue was enough to convince the Province to ban 250 products for sale. Some 80 pesticide ingredients will be banned for cosmetic use. Now that the Province has decided what is fit for use on our lawns, it’s important to know exactly what you’ll able to do this spring and summer when you go out to your lawn and garden. Pesticides cannot be used for cosmetic purposes on your lawn, your vegetables or ornamental gardens, your patios, drive- ways or on any part of your property. There will strict rules for sale and if you use anything that has been banned you will face a fine that will be phased in. You should note that the banned pes- ticides are found in the products that kill slugs, grubs, caterpillars, earwigs, clover, dandelions and other weeds. There will be exemptions which include the following: golf courses, farms, sports fields and trees. It’s very important to note that farms are included in the exemptions because farm- ers have expressed grave concerns that the ban on cosmetic pesticides will have a major effect on them. While urban sprawl has meant suburbia and farmland have come closer together than ever and the needs of agriculture and playground often come into conflict, there should be compromise when it comes to the use of pesticides. Those who choose to live near farmland do so with the knowledge they risk expo- sure to pesticides farmers need to use on their crops. And farmers can be assured that the ban involves only cosmetic pesticides and does not extend to them. Homeowners will be able to use a range of products that are ban-free that meet the standards set by the Province. While lawns might not be as pristine as they have been in the past, concerns about the health of our children should be relieved as time goes on. e-mail letters to newsroom@durhamregion.com / max. 200 words / please include your full first and last name, city of residence & daytime phone number / letters that do not appear in print may be published @ newsdurhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 13, 20096 P Organizers want faster payments, better eligibility criteria BY JILLIAN FOLLERT jfollert@durhamregion.com OSHAWA -- David Robertson sees Cana- da’s Employment Insurance (EI) program as a net intended to catch those who have been unexpectedly laid off -- a net that lately, has become full of holes. As director of work organization and train- ing with the CAW national office, he deals with hundreds of laid off manufacturing workers, helping them find training opportu- nities or new jobs. Many are using EI payments to keep food on the table while they get back on their feet and Mr. Robertson says the stark differences between this recession and the last one in the early 90s, proves the system is no longer working. “In the last recession, seven in 10 Cana- dians qualified for EI, now it’s one in four,” he said. “It used to be that you needed to have worked 255 hours to qualify, now the average in Ontario is 595. EI was a prob- lem to begin with, now we’re in this deep recession that no one knows how to fix.” Mr. Robertson isn’t alone in his concerns. This Saturday, labour organizations, anti- poverty groups, politicians and concerned citizens will be converging on Oshawa MP Dr. Colin Carrie’s office, to rally for EI reform. Local resident Marissa Kata organized the event, saying she was motivated to act after her father was laid off from his longtime manufacturing job and had difficulty getting EI. “There were so many delays and so much red tape, it took a month to get a dime,” she said. “Landlords won’t wait for their money and people can’t feed their kids retroactively while they’re waiting for these payments.” Ms. Kata said the key concerns are EI eli- gibility criteria, the two week waiting period before payments to start flowing and a lack of programs to help laid off people get back into the workforce. Dr. Carrie said the EI system can always be improved, but stresses that it is actually func- tioning quite well. He said about 82 per cent of people who pay into the benefits qualify to recieve pay- ments, adding the two week waiting period at the outset is necessary to protect the sys- tem from fraud. He said his government is working to add an extra five weeks of benefits to the program and blamed the NDP for blocking passage of this year’s federal budget and delaying release of the cash. The demonstration gets underway Sat- urday at 11 a.m. at Dr. Carrie’s constituen- cy office, located at 57 Simcoe St. South. At 1 p.m. the event will move across the street to Memorial Park, where there will be live music at the bandshell. newsdurhamregion.comNews Advertiser • March 13, 20097 AP Helen’s Main Activity Was The Crosswords At Chartwell we offer residents a mix of activities from musical presentations to card tournaments, as well as yoga, and exercise classes for those looking for something a little more active. Durham police Constable Blaine Taylor testified in Superior Court in Whitby he was the first officer to come into contact with Orin Felix, a 19-year-old stabbed twice when violence broke out at the Rim- Rock nightclub in the summer of 2006. Const. Taylor said he found the young Whitby man seated with his back against a car when he arrived at the Harwood Avenue bar at about 2:40 a.m. Sept. 1, 2006. “He appeared to be unresponsive,” Const. Taylor said. The young man’s injuries were so severe paramedics had Const. Taylor drive the ambulance as they rushed to hospital, court heard. Despite the efforts of emer- gency workers and doctors, Mr. Felix was pronounced dead at 4 a.m. that day. Troy Johnson-Lee, 24, of Scarborough has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in Mr. Felix’s death. He is also charged with attempted murder in the stabbing of another young man at the bar that night. The Crown alleges Mr. Johnson-Lee, enraged after a confrontation on the RimRock dance floor earlier in the night, stabbed both young men outside the club. Bob Dan Bruce Frank Rachel Dwayne RomanOssieLukeDerek Sharon AP HEALTH Ajax-Pickering hospital visiting hours change New schedule intended to improve patient recovery, safety BY KRISTEN CALIS kcalis@durhamregion.com AJAX -- After three years of open vis- iting hours, the Ajax-Pickering hospital will implement standard hours. The Rouge Valley Health System’s (RVHS) previous open-visiting-hours policy is changing to standard hours as of Wednesday, April 1 to improve patient recovery and safety, staff safety and hospital security. The unique open policy has been in place for the past few years. The new hours will mirror most hospi- tals’ visitor rules in the GTA, said Janet Harris, vice president of quality, risk, professional practice and chief nursing executive. “While the concept was positive, it had unintended negative impacts such as patients being tired out by their own visitors or by those of other patients,” she said in a press release. “It was also difficult to track people coming in and out of our hospital campuses.” Dave Brazeau, director of public affairs and community relations, said in an interview the change can also help patients who need rest, but feel uncom- fortable telling visitors to leave. “We’re trying to put in a rule to allow them to get the best rest and recovery period possible,” he said. Visiting hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. A visitor’s pass may be issued to those in special circumstances for over- night stays. Each patient is allowed the standard two visitors at a time, but emergency room patients are limited to only one at once. An internet search revealed RVHS is on par with other GTA hospitals. Lakeridge Health Bowmanville and Oshawa both have visiting hours from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with a two-visitor limit. The Scar- borough hospital has a two-visitor limit, and its visiting hours are 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto has visiting hours from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., also enforcing a two-visitor limit. The following areas have special hours at RVHS: labour and delivery, pediat- rics, mental health, intensive care units and cardiac care units. Staff will inform patients and visitors of those hours. The change was reviewed by staff, management, a committee of the hospi- tal board and the hospital’s community advisory group, the press release said. For more information, call the hospi- tal at 905-683-2320. Pickering man fined $7,300 DURHAM -- Two Durham Region resi- dents pleaded guilty recently to tax eva- sion and failing to file tax returns. Brian Masson, of Pickering, pleaded guilty on Feb. 26 to one count each of tax evasion and GST evasion. A commission salesman, Mr. Masson was fined $7,334 in the Ontario Court of Justice in Oshawa. The fines, which are in addition to any taxes and interest owed, must be paid within 12 months. On March 2, Shirley Wheatley, of Sun- derland, pleaded guilty to three counts of failing to file tax returns. Ms. Wheatley, a registered occupa- tional nurse, was fined $3,000 and given six months to pay the fine. This was also dealt with in Ontario Court of Justice in Oshawa. Canada Revenue Agency reminds the public that when an individual or cor- poration is convicted of tax evasion, they have to pay the full amount of taxes owing, plus interest, and any penalties the agency assesses. In cases of gross negligence, the Income Tax Act and the Excise Tax Act allow the CRA to assess a penalty of up to 50 per cent of the unpaid taxes or the improper- ly-claimed benefit. In addition, if convict- ed, a court may impose fines of between 50 per cent and 200 per cent of taxes evad- ed, and sentence them to a jail term of up to two years. Individuals who have not filed returns for previous years, or who have not report- ed all of their income, can still voluntarily correct their tax affairs. They will not be penalized or prosecut- ed if they make a full disclosure before the Agency starts any action or investiga- tion against them. Information on the vol- untary disclosure program is available at www.cra-arc.gc.ca/voluntarydisclosures. The fi rst Bad Beat Jackpot was awarded on Wednesday February 18, 2009 with a total jackpot of $87,114, after just 24 days of play. The winner received fi fty percent of the jackpot equalling $43,557, which was awarded to Cameron H. for his Quad Kings. The man drove a white car that he briefly exited before getting back in and leaving, police said. The woman may be a medical professional. Both people are sought as potential witnesses into an incident that began in the afternoon of Feb. 27 when several youths gathered in Hermitage Park, near Church Street and Kingston Road, for a pre-arranged fight. A 16-year-old Toronto boy was stabbed while two other Toronto youths, aged 15 and 17, were struck by a vehicle, police said. The stabbing victim is on the mend; the boys who were hit by the van died in hospital. A 17-year-old Pickering boy who is alleged to have been driving the van has been charged with two counts each of dangerous driving causing death, crim- inal negligence causing death, and fail- ing to remain. He is being held in custody awaiting a bail hearing. Anyone with information is urged to call police at 905-579-1520, extension 2528 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- 8477. City of Pickering employee aiming high for next gig BY MIKE RUTA mruta@durhamregion.com DURHAM -- An Oshawa singer is in the running for one of the most coveted jobs in rock ‘n roll. Born-and-bred Oshawa resi- dent Mark Konarowski was cho- sen by Sanctuary Artist Manage- ment in California to write lyr- ics for and lay down vocal tracks on two Velvet Revolver demo songs. The band, featuring for- mer members of Guns ‘N Roses Slash, Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum, needs a new singer with the departure of Scott Weiland last year. Now Konarowski’s waiting for the possibly life-altering news. “It’s still up in the air; we’re hoping sooner rather than later,” said Carlos Shaw, of Sanctuary Artist Management in California, on when the band will decide upon a singer. He said “not too many” singers were originally chosen to write lyrics and sing on the demos and an attempt was made to keep the tunes “under wraps.” However Shaw said they are now all over the Internet and he’s getting a slew of calls every day from sing- ers asking if they’ve heard their auditions. “People I’ve never heard of are auditioning,” he said. “It’s gone crazy.” With all the new names and voices being added to the mix, Shaw said the number “hasn’t been narrowed down at all.” However he said “it’s fair to say” Konarowski is in the mix -- along with “hundreds being consid- ered.” For his part, it’s been quite a ride already for the Oshawan and City of Pickering employee. “Writing was quite hard because in the back of your mind you’re thinking, ‘what if they don’t like it at all’,” Konarowski said. He wrote the lyrics for both tracks in January. The first track, a straightforward, up-tempo rocker, he titled Time to Shine, noting the chorus “just came to me.” Change the World echoes the hope of the world with the swearing-in of U.S. President Barack Obama, featuring Slash’s lush and raunchy chords and a soaring solo. “The world was on the verge of waiting for this guy to take over, to change the world,” Konarows- ki explained. He had his work cut out for him getting through the front door. Late last year he finally reached Shaw, who said he was willing to hear what Konarowski brought to the table. The Oshawa resi- dent sent him “the whole pack- age,” a biography, photos and CDs from his time in the bands Adrenaline and Xntrik. Around Christmas, Shaw told him the band was going to send out two demo songs to certain singers -- including himself. Even if the Velvet Revolver gig doesn’t work out, Konarowski has his bases covered. He also has ambitions for the INXS sing- er job and, if that fails to mate- rialize, is already playing “with some great Oshawa musicians” in a new band. On March 17, the society will present two free concerts at Northview branch of Oshawa Public Libraries, with the theme of neighbours. The world of neighbours, nasty and nice, nosy and naive, from near and far, will be presented by storytellers Dianne Chandler, of Port Perry, Doris Cherkas, of Oshawa, Enid DeCoe, of Courtice, Graham Ducker, of Oshawa, Marg Kropf, of Cobourg, and Heather Whalley, also a singer/songwriter. Joining them will be musi- cian Debra Northey, of Bethany. The first concert, from 4 to 5 p.m., is designed for school-aged children and families. The evening concert, 7 to 8:30 p.m., is aimed at adults, although children nine and over are welcome. Admission and parking at the branch, Bea- trice Street East at Ritson Road North, are free. The Watoto Children’s Choir is performing free, family-friendly concerts in Pickering and Oshawa that feature African rhythms and har- monies, colourful costumes and inspiring sto- ries from the kids of Watoto Children’s Villages. Canadians Gary and Marilyn Skinner founded Watoto, which means ‘the children’ in Swahili, in 1992 to address the Ugandan orphan’s crisis. Roughly 2.3 million children there are orphans, almost half of them due to AIDS. Watoto provides care and education to more than 1,700 orphaned and abandoned chil- dren. There are two Watoto Children’s Villages in Kampala, Uganda and third is being estab- lished in the northern part of the country. Future goals include a hospital and a university. Thirty-six Watoto choirs have toured the world, including a 2007 performance for Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. The Live Concert of Hope comes to Osha- wa’s Kingsview United Church, 505 Adelaide Ave. E., on March 15 at 7 p.m., and to Pickering’s St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, 1148 Finch Ave., on March 17 at 7 p.m. March BreakMarch BreakMarchBreak March 16th - 20th pint-sized p i z z a best friends Lionel super sp a g h e t t i Not valid with any other promotional offer. The Pickering Power boys’ teams in the under-14 and under-15 age groups will head to London, Bir- mingham, Manchester and Liver- pool, leaving today, Friday, March 13, and arriving home on March 22. They will train and play games against academy teams in both locations. PSC players and coach- es will be the guests of former Eng- lish pro and Pickering native Paul Peschisolido while on the 10-day overseas trip. The journey includes 30 play- ers and 16 adults who will accom- pany the players. While there the two Pickering teams will play three friendlies -- two in Birmingham and another in London. A fourth one was planned but eliminated, however, due to time constraints, said PSC head coach Tony La Fer- rara. La Ferrara noted the excursion grew from only a few players head- ing to England, thanks to Peschiso- lido and his Pesch’s Premier Acad- emy that debuted in Pickering last summer, to two entire teams rais- ing funds over the off-season to take part in the international train- ing and friendlies. “Paul came over for the summer camp and we took the leap from there,” explains La Ferrara. “We got the opportunity to go to England and we said, ‘This is how we’re going to do it’. Things happened from there.” He added Peschisolido has worked on the itinerary for the Pickering tour from his Birming- ham base. It will include training and games in London, followed by something similar in Birmingham where they will train for four ses- sions with Birmingham City Acad- emy. As well, there are plans to attend a Birmingham City profes- sional game while in the city. PSC competitive team coach Corrado Roccasalva is happy for his players to get the opportunity to learn from academy coaches in England. As well, he’s excited to be learning something new in the sport. “We’ll be coming from a country where hockey is huge and going to somewhere where they eat and breathe the game of soccer. The kids will get to experience some- thing they’ve never experienced before. I started coaching seven or eight years ago and I’ve learned a lot. I’m looking forward to a differ- ent way of thinking and a different voice,” said Roccasalva. Ramin Mohammadi, also a PSC competitive team coach, says he’s as amped up as the players for the tour to start. “I think it’s great that we were chosen to go there,” said Moham- madi. “I’m as excited as the kids are to see the facilities and what their programs are.” Shawn-Claud Lawson, 15, of Ajax, who played with the Pickering Cou- gars last season, is ready to soak in the training methods and tech- niques he’ll see in England. “I’m really excited to get the opportunity to go to England and train with Birmingham City and train overseas,” said the Grade 9 student at J. Clarke Richardson Col- legiate. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase ourselves to scouts and do things we haven’t done before.” Malcolm Shaw, 13, of Pickering, who played with the Pickering Tigers U13 squad last year, said he’s similarly looking forward to going to England to learn from coaches in the “top country for soccer.” Joseph Roccasalva, 14, who was part of the Pickering Spitfires U14 rep team last year, said he’s looking forward to his first trip abroad. “I think it’s a great honour. I haven’t been out of Canada before,” said the Grade 9 student at St. Mary Secondary School. “To be there will be a lot of fun.” The Pickering teen is looking for- ward to improving his game while practising in the English tradition of soccer. “I hope it will allow me to play at a high level. I hope some scouts are there to see me.” Mateo Haza, 14, is also hoping to soak up as much English soccer methods while there. “Hopefully, it will help us learn a different style of play. We hope to get as much out of it as we can.” Sports Brad Kelly Sports Editor bkelly@durhamregion.com newsdurhamregion.com Tough luck at OFSAA championships DURHAM -- The Pickering Trojans returned home from the OFSAA basketball championships with a medal in tow, but not the colour they would have preferred. They were, however, the only team of four representing Ajax- Pickering schools at provincial championship tournaments to return home with a medal of any colour. Notre Dame of Ajax competed at the same Quad-A boys’ basket- ball tournament that was staged in Windsor, while in girls’ volleyball, Denis O’Connor travelled to Keno- ra for the Double-A tournament and Dunbarton did likewise in Mis- sissauga at the Quad-A champion- ships. In Wednesday’s bronze medal game of the boys’ Quad-A bas- ketball championships, Robert Gagliardi drove hard to the hoop and laid in a tough shot to beat the buzzer, giving No. 3 seed Pickering a 38-36 victory over No. 13 Notre Dame of Welland. Gagliardi fin- ished with 13 to lead Pickering, who only mustered six points the entire second half. Pickering was relegated to the bronze medal game after dropping a 60-44 decision to No. 3 Mother Teresa in the semifinals, despite 16 points from Kevin Thomas. The Trojans opened the tournament with a 60-44 win over No. 11 Glebe, then edged No. 15 St. Anne 47- 46, before ending the tournament for No. 9 Notre Dame 62-39 in the quarterfinals. Notre Dame opened on a los- ing note, falling 58-46 to No. 10 Sir J. A. MacDonald, but came back with a 69-58 victory over No. 7 St. Edmond Campion in the next round, advancing to the quarters against Pickering. At the Quad-A volleyball cham- pionships, No. 7 Dunbarton of Pickering finished second in pool play, coming out ahead in three set matches over No. 10 Riverdale (26-24, 20-25, 15-12), and No. 13 Michael Power (23-25, 25-14, 15-6), but falling in straight sets to No. 4 Saunders (24-26, 20-25). Their run ended in the championship quar- terfinals, coming up just short in a three set match to No. 2 Water- down (20-25, 25-23, 11-15). In Kenora, Denis O’Connor came up with just one victory in pool play, beating No. 19 Mentor College 25-10, 25-12. But the three losses to No. 3 General Amherst (8-25, 12- 25), No. 8 Lakefield (11-25, 17-25) and No. 9 Beamsville (25-21, 21-25, 7-15) put them into the consolation playoff round. Unfortunately, the tournament ended with a straight sets 18-25, 18-25 loss to No. 11 E.C. Drury.
