And while the Clinical Services Plan only looks at streamlining and centralizing five hospital ser- vices at the moment, the plan is to consider other areas for streamlin- ing -- like Emergency services, or- thopedics, and complex continu- ing care -- over the next several years. “Here we are, faced with a sys- tem that is not delivering to an acceptable level, and that is being asked to deliver much more, and that’s going to require more than a little shuffle,” Dr. George Buldo told the CE-LHIN’s board. The CE-LHIN released high- lights of the report Tuesday. It’s aimed at building “one acute care network”. The plan, which has been the subject of almost two years study, looked at five clinical areas: thoracic, cardiac, vascular, maternal, child and youth, and mental health and addiction. For each, specific centres have been recommended. For example, under the plan, Lakeridge Oshawa would become the centre for tho- racic cancer surgeries, while pre- and post-operative care would be provided closer to home, based on clusters in Scarborough, Durham, and the LHIN’s northeast region. The CE-LHIN is one of 14 formed across Ontario by the Pro- vincial government to, accord- ing to the group’s website, “plan, co-ordinate, integrate and fund health care services at the local level including hospitals, long- term care homes, community care access centres, community sup- port services, community mental health and addictions services and community health centres.” The local organizations cover all of Durham Region, Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton Highlands and Peter- borough County, as well as part of Northumberland and a sliver of Toronto’s east end. The plan sets in motion a new system which would see a phone line or website set up for doc- tors looking for specific services for their patients, to ensure the patient quickly receives the care STAND ASIDE GORDON RAMSAY Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Josiah Bowman, left, and Mitchell Fancey work on grating and peeling potatoes for their po- tato pancakes. Six people, including four youths, were charged with robbery and weapons offences, police said. The incidents spanned just a few hours in Oshawa, Pickering and Bowmanville. • Officers responded to a report of a home invasion in south Os- hawa after suspects kicked in the door of a Glen Street home, pushed a male victim down a set of stairs and stole a laptop and a cellphone. An hour later police arrested two suspects nearby at the Lake Vista Plaza on Wentworth Street. Christopher Pederson, 18, of Re- naissance Drive Oshawa and Kyle Morris, 18, of Fenelon Crescent, Oshawa, are charged with robbery. • A 17-year-old Pickering male reported being accosted by three males, one of them armed with a handgun, at the Amberlea Plaza on Whites Road at about 2:30 p.m. Responding officers collared sus- pects in the area, recovering a BB gun and a folding knife, as well as the victim’s cellphone. Three teens aged 14, 15, and 16 face robbery and weapons charges. • Police responded to Bowman- ville High School on Liberty Street North at 3 p.m. after a student re- ported having a knife held to his throat by a suspect who stole a DVD. Within three hours police had charged a 16-year-old with robbery and weapons offences. Oshawa and Whitby included as venues in GTA bid TORONTO — If Toron- to’s bid for the 2015 Pan American Games is suc- cessful, Durham Region will be among the hot spots. Organizers of the games released a list of pro- posed venues Wednesday afternoon, with Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax all in- cluded in the mix. Under the proposal, the General Motors Cen- tre in Oshawa would be the site for boxing, while softball would be held at Lakefront West Park and shooting at the Oshawa Gun Club. Durham College would host boccia as part of the Parapan Am Games. Whitby’s Iroquois Park Sports Centre and its planned Durham Abili- ties Centre would be a focal part for the Parapan Games, hosting tennis and basketball. Ajax would host shoot- ing and modern pentath- lon as part of the Pan Am Games. The list of venues stretch from Hamilton in the west to Oshawa in the east and Brampton, with many key events centred in Toronto. “The venue plan is a critical component of our bid to host the 2015 Pan and Parapan Am Games,” bid chair David Peterson said at a press conference in Toronto. “We have come up with an exciting and achiev- able plan that is good for Toronto, good for the Greater Golden Horse- shoe region and good for an excellent Games.” The 2015 Pan Am Games would run for 17 days, from July 10-26, followed by the Parapan Games for eight days, from Aug. 7-14. The cost of the $1.4-bil- lion bid, which has been cut by $300 million due to the economic downturn, would be shared by the federal, provincial and some of the participating municipal governments. Toronto, considered the favourite, is competing against Bogota, Colombia and Lima, Peru in the bid process, which will be de- cided in November. -- with files from Torstar news services Ajax prominent in Pan Am plans ✦ Silo from page 1 ‘Silo mentality no longer works’: Loucks Get Local 24/7 mobile.newsdurhamregion.com GO says driver won’t speak to customer By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A Pickering teen says she was left behind in tears after being kicked off the GO bus on a cold January day. Nicolette Sabino, a Grade 9 student at Pickering High School, said she was heading home from an exam when she tried to board a GO Transit bus on Hwy. 2 on Jan. 21. Tem- peratures were below zero and the teen said she had her Durham Region Transit pass, which can be used on GO buses in Durham, inside her monkey mitts. “It was so cold I forgot to show my pass.” She said she’d taken a couple of steps onto the bus when the driver called her back. “I walked back and said here’s my pass and then he said ‘Get off my bus’,” she said, adding she asked what she had done wrong, but was again told to get off the bus. “By this point I was pretty much in tears,” said Nicolette. The teen said she tried to re- board the bus, but was told her pass was no good and warned the driver would call the police. Left behind, she called her parents to pick her up. But she didn’t let the matter drop, e-mailing GO’s public relations about the incident. What Nicolette really wants is an apology from the driver. “If anyway possible, I want it to my face. I want him to apologize for what he did.” Nicolette’s mother Louise Sabino said her biggest concern was safety, especially given the cold. She said her daughter is lucky her father could pick her up. “When you leave kids at the side of the highway like that you never know what can happen.” Vanessa Thomas, a spokeswoman for GO, said there are two sides to every story and it’s against policy to reveal details of any disciplinary action. Out of respect for the privacy of the em- ployee, there won’t be any direct contact between Nicolette and the driver. “We have no plans for the driver to issue a formal statement directly to this customer about this incident, but I am saying we re- gret any distress that may have been caused to this customer.” Ms. Thomas stressed GO is confident it was an isolated incident, add- ing GO has 550 drivers operating more than 2,000 trips daily and only 2.6 per cent of complaints received in 2008 were about the bus. Average tax hike will be $47 By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Durham council- lors passed the 2009 budget with an average 2.2 per cent tax hike quickly and nearly unanimously at Regional council on Wednesday. The hike works out to be an aver- age $47 on a $289,400 home on the Regional portion of the tax bill. The average hike varies by municipality because of waste and transit costs. Uxbridge came in the highest with an average $89 increase and Os- hawa came in the lowest at $27. At Regional council, the bud- get passed quickly after remarks from finance and administration committee chairwoman and Scu- gog Mayor Marilyn Pearce, who congratulated the Region’s depart- ments on coming in well below the original four per cent budget guideline. “In these uncertain economic times, the 2009 budget will allow the Region to maintain our essen- tial services,” she said of the $1.1 billion budget. All councillors at the meeting supported the budget except for Oshawa Councillor John Neal, who had suggested deferring approval until after Ottawa announced fi- nancial relief for the manufactur- ing sector. That suggestion was soundly defeated. Regional chairman Roger An- derson said he could only hope the 2010 budget would proceed as smoothly. “Some of us have been in this room a long time. I don’t ever re- member a budget being passed without one question,” he said. Among the new additions to the budget for 2009 are a $1.2 million fund for winter maintenance as well as additional funding for it in the works budget in an effort to stop cost overruns. The funding level will meet the average cost of winter maintenance over the last five years. Emergency services will get a boost with 26 new police officers and five civilian support staff for Durham Regional Police Services and 12 new paramedics. An extra $800,000 will be bud- geted for rising social assistance caseloads. The Region pays a fifth of the cost of Ontario Works ben- efits. As well, 15 new nurses will be added to the Region’s four nursing homes. The $53 million budgeted for road work will mean improve- ments to Taunton Road in Oshawa, Altona Road in Pickering, intersec- tion improvements in Oshawa and Whitby and a bridge replacement on Courtice Road in Clarington. More thaw cycles means bumpier driving By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Things are get- ting bumpy for drivers as local roads are once again going to pot. “We’ve had more freeze- thaw cycles this year and that’s created more potholes than usual,” said Uldis Sik- sna, manager of maintenance operations for the Region of Durham. Potholes form when water gets under the roads seeping in through the asphalt, usu- ally through cracks. When the temperature drops, the water freezes and expands. As it warms up, the ice thaws and the water dissipates, leaving an air pocket. Traffic on the road will cause the pavement to buckle over the pocket cre- ating potholes. More freeze- thaw cycles mean more pot- holes for drivers and works crews to contend with on the roads. Mr. Siksna said his crews are dealing with the potholes on a daily basis. “We are dealing with them when we can, unless there are more urgent issues. Those being fighting the actual snow storms; snow removal from downtown core areas where it’s creating dangerous situa- tions for pedestrians or traffic; or dealing with broken water mains.” Some of Durham’s provin- cial roads are doing very well with a minimum number of potholes, said Will MacKen- zie, a spokesman for the Min- istry of Transportation. These include Highways 7, 7A, 7-12, 48 and 35-115. “Highway 401 is doing well, much better than last year, and our contractors have been monitoring and repair- ing potholes on a daily basis particularly in the problem areas,” said Mr. MacKenzie, adding those include the Meadowvale Road and Morn- ingside Avenue areas. He said the fact that we had a longer cold spell this year than last year has helped keep the number of potholes down. It’s still early in the season, however. Meanwhile, provincial crews will continue to patrol the highways and if an area gets particularly bad, the Province has equipment on stand by that can grind off the top layer of asphalt so it can be repaved. “We do our best, we have people patrolling 24 hours a day,” said Mr. MacKenzie. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, February 20, 2009 durhamregion.com C hristmas came in February this year, with one of the best gifts I’ve ever been given. I actually unwrapped it in December -- my very first finch feeder and a bag- ful of niger seeds, from my husband. He hung it outside my office window, where a hummingbird feeder hangs all summer. And there it stayed, through snowstorms, winds and rain, waiting for customers. Sunflower seeds are cheaper and please a great variety of birds; that’s why we never had a niger feeder before. To start one now, in the midst of an economic crunch, felt daring and defiant ... and delightful. I watched the tube feeder every day as I sat at my desk, wishing a bird would find it, comforting myself with the thought of all the money we were sav- ing because they didn’t. Finally, a week ago, a chickadee came, stuck its bill in one of the tiny holes and flew off. The seeds are so small I couldn’t tell if it had grabbed one. But soon it was back, leading a small parade of its friends. I was glad for the company. A day or two later I looked up and found a pine sisken on one of the little perches. “Pine sisken!” I yelled to Dennis. “Sisken on the feeder!” I stared in awe at its brown streaky plumage, pointy beak, notched tail. It was the best look I’d ever had of this prized northern visitor from coniferous forests -- a metre away from my nose! Again, one bird brought others. Before the day was done I had a handful of sis- kens come, and one or two winter-drab goldfinches. Unlike chickadees, which always take a seed and run, the finches sat there and fed, in plain view. Magnifi- cent view. I didn’t get much work done. The next day they were back, with even more friends. I amused myself counting how many siskens, how many goldfinch- es were there at any moment and I stud- ied their field marks in detail. Sisken’s bill a tiny bit long, sharper; its tail more notched; its wing bars slightly thinner and wavier... Before long all eight perches were filled, with more birds fluttering about, eager to take their turn. And then a finch with a pink breast, red cap and black chin appeared -- a redpoll, down from the Arctic! Lots of readers have been telling me about redpolls at their feeders lately and at last they were at mine. I know pine siskens from hearing them fly over the sugar bush in fall, know red- polls from weedy fields in winter. I know goldfinches from watching them eat this- tle seeds in summer, birds as golden as the dandelions whose seeds they feast on in spring. Suddenly I had all three same- sized but widely diverse little finches feeding together at my window. Merry Christmas! Nature queries: 905-725-2116 or mcarney@interlinks.net. Durham resident Margaret Carney, in addi- tion to writing nature-appreciation columns, has also published several children’s books. Pine siskens lead way to filling up perches Buy domestic and help support auto industry here To the editor: When you buy domestic, you’re sup- porting work in your area, province and country. GM uses 83 per cent of its parts from North America. It does not matter if it’s the Cobalt or a Cadillac. Toyota uses about 47 per cent North Ameri- can-made parts on most models. Until you break down the Lexus line; they use four per cent. The rest is offshore. Meaning the money goes out of the country, not to a local supplier and all the profit from all their sales goes to back to Japan. Supporting the Detroit Three now means your money helps the compa- nies pay their pension plans that built the auto industry in North America during the last 100 years. Dan Thordarson Oshawa Margaret Carney First meeting with Obama signals effort to work together Protectionism won’t help either country emerge from recession T here is no way to overstate the importance of the relationship Canada has to the United States. For 142 years we have stood side by side with the longest undefended bor- der in the world, great friends in time of crisis and each other’s largest trading partners. What happens to each of us matters to the other, But it’s clear, the partnership is an unbalanced one. We need the United States more than it needs us. So the visit, his first to a foreign coun- try, by President Barack Obama to Canada on Thursday, is of tremendous significance and can’t be underesti- mated. It is a signal to the world -- and clearly the world is watching this politi- cal supernova -- that Canada holds a special place in the heart of Americans. Of special importance at this crucial time is of course the economy. It would be hard to imagine any topic taking up much of the conversation between President Obama and Prime Minister Stephen Harper in the time they had to chat on Parliament Hill. While the two leaders will no doubt touch on Afghanistan and Canada’s long-term commitment there and other such issues as North American security, Arctic sovereignty, global warming, Kyoto, and other international issues, the economy is clearly the No. 1 crisis world leaders must come to grips with. Mr. Obama’s own recent moves to pass a $700 billion-plus stimulus package in the U.S. to try to get the American economy moving is something he can touch on with Mr. Harper. And certainly, as America leads, it can only be hoped that Canada’s only stimulus measures as revealed in the Jan. 27 budget will have success on our side of the border. In addition, no doubt, the men discussed trade policies that boost and oil the wheels of commerce across our borders at Windsor-Detroit and other points of entry. It’s clear there is little to be gained by protectionism and defensive measures that build up a wall around our borders. Let’s hope Thursday’s first meeting between our two leaders has cemented a common bond as we move forward to meet tough challenges that will require strength from both our countries to con- quer. MILLENNIUM REALTY INC. BROKERAGE INDEPENDENTLY OWNED & OPERATED MICHAEL BAIRD THE NEWS ADVERTISER, February 20, 2009 PAGE 7 A/Pdurhamregion.com Durham EMS response times among best in province By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — When seconds count, Dur- ham ambulances are making the grade with some of the best response times in the prov- ince. In 2007, the most recent year for which the ministry of health released numbers, the maximum time for ambulances to arrive on scene for 90 per cent of the most urgent calls was 10 minutes and 34 seconds. The 2008 figure should be similar, said Steve McNenly, assistant director for Dur- ham Region Emergency Medical Services. Other response times in nearby commu- nities included 11:58 in Toronto, 12:10 in Peel and 13:04 in York Region. Only Halton did better than Durham, and just margin- ally, with a time of 10:30. Times were even longer outside of the GTA, with 16:54 in Northumberland County and 17:36 in Peter- borough County. In every area of the GTA save Durham, response times have risen since 2000, when the Province transferred the responsibility for land ambulance to the upper tier munici- palities. In 2001, Durham’s time was 11:34. Mr. McNenly partially attributes Durham’s solid times to support from the Region. “Number one, there’s been a significant amount of paramedic resources added. We’ve added staff, we’ve improved our sta- tions and we’ve added vehicles,” he said, adding Durham EMS modifies its deploy- ment plan annually in a continuous effort to try to improve times. Another factor is that Durham’s off-load times at local hospitals haven’t been as long, letting ambulance staff get out of hospitals and back on the roads a little faster. “That same off-load delay challenge is hitting us now,” said Mr. McNenly. In 2008, 90 per cent of cases were off-loaded in one hour and 13 minutes or less, a number that has been rising steadily. This figure is dependant on the service at the hospitals and factors like the loss of the Whitby hospital make it tougher. Starting in January of this year, a provincially funded pilot project means there will be a dedicated off-load nurse at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. “They’ll take up to four of our patients at any one time and that means eight of our staff members back on the road or four am- bulances,” said Mr. McNenly. Also, since 2003 Durham EMS has had rapid-response, SUV-type vehicles on the roads to provide a first response for priority calls even before the ambulances arrive in some cases. Spread out on their classroom table were erasers, blankets, candies, pencils, tooth- brushes, playing cards, letters from students, and other items destined for Africa, thanks to the school’s Grade 8 class’ campaign, ‘Change for change’. By collecting spare change, the kids re- cently raised about $70 to buy the items, which will be sent to Africa with their teach- er’s friend. “Their attitude from the start was let’s raise more money,” said Grade 8 teacher Jill Couture. The kids wanted to do something for kids in Africa following a visit from author Eric Walters, who shared information with them about the conditions many students face there. “They were really excited,” Ms. Cou- ture said. As soon as the presentation was over, the kids were asking what can they do to help, she said. “People think teenagers are just bratty, spoiled kids... but we want to make a differ- ence, we want to help,” said student Kaitlin Francis. They also want to show they know what’s going on in the world, she added. Mr. Walters’ presentation showed stu- dents a harsh view of how some things are elsewhere in the world. It included slides, pictures, and stories of the kids in Africa, said student Kristen Mavroukas. “You know the kids with the bloated stom- achs — that really stood out for me,” Kristen said. She thought about how she would feel if it was her, she added. “I thought it was harsh, but it was re- ally eye-opening about the poverty,” said student Tarik Cropper-Bullen. “We actually want to make a difference and we are mak- ing a difference.” To collect money for the campaign, which ran for a week and a half, the students pulled up the couch cushions, checked their drawers, raided their parents’ coffee money stash, and donated money they received for Christmas. “And I feel really good about it,” Kristen said. “And I want to do it again. We made a difference.” They also wrote letters to the students in the class that their teacher’s friend will be teaching in Africa. Kaitlin stayed up late writing her letter, and felt good knowing it would bring happi- ness to someone else, she said. CATCH UP ONLINE AT newsdurhamregion.com Uxbridge trustee asks how cancellations are determined By Crystal Crimi ccrimi@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Why school buses were on the road in poor weather is being asked following a fatal ac- cident last week. A 45-year-old Uxbridge woman died on Feb. 10 after her vehicle collided with a school bus, loaded with children, on Wagg Road, west of Regional Road 57, in Uxbridge. Icy road conditions are believed to be a factor, said a Durham Re- gional Police report. Uxbridge Trustee Joe Allin brought the community’s ques- tion, along with a couple of oth- ers, to the Durham District School Board at its Feb. 17 meeting. “The decision is always made with a great deal of concern and caution,” said superintendent Mark Joel. “There is no financial gain or penalty for us for cancel- ling: safety is something we work on all the time.” The process for deciding on cancellation begins early in the morning, around 5 a.m. “And everything at that time was clear,” Mr. Joel said. “This particular day at 6:30 in the morning it was just fine,” Mr. Joel said. “At five to seven, it wasn’t fine.” But, buses were already on route by then, he said. “We put the word out to drivers to proceed with caution,” Mr. Joel said. By 6:30 a.m., there are 262 buses on the road, with 100 of them in the north, he said. “It’s a commonly held belief in my community that too many de- cisions are made in the south,” Trustee Allin said, and made with- out consideration for the north. Mr. Joel was principal at Scott Central Public School in Sandford, near Uxbridge, for three years, and knows the three different climates you can go through on the way. The public and Catholic boards work together, along with bus companies, roaming trucks, mu- nicipalities, and sometimes even the police, to assess road condi- tions, Mr. Joel said. Trustee Allin also wanted to know what action is being take to ensure the bus cancellation poli- cy/process is the best it can be. Mr. Joel’s replied he wasn’t sure what could have been done differ- ently. “Unfortunately, a very tragic event happened,” Mr. Joel said. When something like this oc- curs, it’s common for people to second guess things, Mr. Joel said. “But, the reality is, our bus was in the right lane, it was not at fault, it was just there,” he added. durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 10 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, February 20, 2009 Fatal school bus collision raises questions about safety School roofing projects under budget DURHAM — Roofing projects are keeping more money than expected in the Catholic school board’s wallet. Bids for three roofing projects came in almost $45,000 under budget, said a staff report pre- sented to trustees at the Feb. 9 Durham Catholic District School Board meeting. The board received Good Places to Learn Phase 3 funding for $1.8 million, of which $1.5 million was allocated to high-priority roof- ing projects at three elementary schools: St. Catherine of Siena and St. Patrick in Ajax, and St. Eliza- beth Seton in Pickering. Atlas-Apex Roofing was the low bidder on all three projects. After including the $23,475 in GST, the aggregate cost is $22,420 under budget for the three projects as a whole. Work on the roofs will be com- pleted this summer. Good Places to Learn fund- ing supports major renovations, school replacements and making room for more pupil spaces to sup- port new government programs. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, February 20, 2009 PAGE 11 A/Pdurhamregion.com (NC)-If you’re thinking about improving your home but have never taken on a renovation before, begin with simple projects. Home improvements don’t have to be long, labour-intensive tasks that create a huge dent in your budget. Instead, begin with small jobs that can be done over a weekend to give you enough time to complete a project, keeping your work week hassle- free. “A common mistake made among new home renova- tors is biting off more than they can chew,” says David Flood, Insulation Expert, Owens Corning. “Rather than tackling a new kitchen installation or tearing down walls to build a new room, try something as easy as adding more insulation in your attic. It can help you save on your energy bills* and prepare you for larger, more challenging renovations down the road.” Upgrade your insulation Upgrading your attic insulation sounds trickier than it actually is. All the materials you need can be found in your home or at your local building supplies store. There are three basic steps in upgrading the insulation in your attic: 1.Measure your existing insulation - How much attic insulation do you currently have? If you don’t have at least 15 inches of batt insulation, it’s time to top up on what you’ve already got to help prevent heat from escaping through your attic. 2. Calculate how much insulation you need - The amount of insulation required will depend on the size of your attic, so it’s important to take the right measurements before heading out to the store. To help you with the calculations, visit the ‘How much insulation?’ section online at www.pinksa- vesenergy.ca. 3.Insulate and save - Insulate your attic using PINK FIBERGLAS Batt Insulation, start- ing at the outer edge of the attic and working towards the centre. PINK insulation is perfect for filling in the gaps along your attic floor, creating a thermal blanket that will help prevent your heating system from working overtime. When you help slow down heat from sneak- ing out of your home, you help cut your energy usage and see the savings on your monthly energy bills.* Upgrade your attic insulation up to 15 inches - a value of R-50 - and you may qualify for a government retrofit rebate of up to $600. Visit the Natural Resourc- es Canada website to learn more at www.oee.nrcan. gc.ca. By insulating your attic to R-50 you also help reduce green house gases by a half ton+ per year! When your attic insulation upgrade is complete, think about other energy-efficient renovations that can help further reduce your energy costs. Stick to the sim- ple stuff - caulking around windows and doors doesn’t require any skilled training and replacing lights with energy-saving light bulbs is something any homeowner can do. Not only can these changes make a positive impact on the environment, they can help make an impact on your wallet, too. For more information on energy-saving home projects, visit www.owenscorning.ca. The purpose of a preliminary inquiry is to find out if the Crown has enough evidence to take the case to a full trial. At the end, Justice Rhys Morgan will either discharge Mr. Tippett or order him to stand trial. On Friday he appeared relaxed, propping up his arm on the edge of the prisoner’s box and resting his head on his hand for much of the time. Since he’s spending several long days in court, defence lawyer Michael Mclaughlin was able to argue against the usual security precaution of handcuffs at the beginning of the inquiry, allowing Mr. Tippett a little comfort. As is the usual custom, heavily armed Emergency Response Team officers guarded Courtroom 3 while another police officer used a metal-detecting wand to search those entering the room, expensive security pre- cautions not used in most court appearances. Two witnesses gave their testimony, the contents of which are under a publication ban. The next two dates for the continuation of the inquiry are Feb. 24 and March 10. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, February 20, 2009 PAGE 17 A/Pdurhamregion.com Oshawa homes join houses in Ajax already approved By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Twenty-nine new affordable housing units for people with disabilities and seniors are slated for Oshawa. Bloor Park Village, to be located just east of Bloor Street East and Ritson Road South, is a $5.1-million project with $2.03 million of the funding coming from the Canada-Ontario Affordable Housing Program. Cher-Brook – Bloor Park Village will build the homes on a private, non-profit basis. When combined with new units announced for Ajax in early 2008, it’s a significant number of new homes, said Regional Chairman Roger Anderson, who wel- comed the news. “That’s 145 homes, roughly, that are being built in Durham that will provide a roof over people’s heads and bedrooms for them to sleep in,” he said, adding that anything that brings the federal and provincial governments to the table on affordable housing is a good thing. The Bloor Park Village units will be occupied by people with special needs and physical disabilities and the homes will be in high-demand. According to a recent report to the Region’s health and social services committee, the average wait for a modified unit in Dur- ham is about two-and-a-half years. Overall, there were 3.922 households waiting for affordable housing at the end of 2008 in Durham. Mr. Anderson said he’s also looking forward to the federal budget dollars announced for social housing repairs. “We have lots of units that need repairs and we’re prepared to spend that,” he said. Another positive aspect to both the building and repairing of social housing stock is it will generate eco- nomic activity. “So there is an opportunity for quite a lot of people to be working for a while as a result of these allocations,” said Mr. Anderson. Oshawa MP Colin Carrie and Ajax-Pickering MPP Joe Dickson also welcomed the construction of the new units on behalf of their respective governments. “The Government of Canada is committed to mak- ing affordable housing available in Ontario and across Canada for those who need it most,” said Dr. Carrie in a prepared statement. ”This funding is helping the Bloor Park Village give seniors and people with special needs in Oshawa hope, dignity and a path to a safer, better and stronger future.” To callDurhamHealthConnectionLine 1-800-841-2729or 905-666-6241 www.durham.ca register Wednesday, February 25,2009 7:00 p.m.– 8:00 p.m. Ajax Community Centre 75 Centennial Road,Ajax What to expect when quitting How to prepare to quit Drug therapy options What community supports are available FR E E • Session led by a Public Health Nurse • Registration is required •Nocost • Learn about: QuittingSmoking?Whattoexpect. You’ll believe a Pan can fly Ajacians among 35 cast members for Borelians’ ‘Peter Pan’ production By Christy Chase cchase@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Everyone knows Peter Pan can fly and that he teaches Wendy, John and Michael to do the same. So just how will he take flight in the Borelians’ production of J.M. Barrie’s play, ‘Peter Pan’, which opened on Feb. 19? “Everyone keeps wondering how Peter is going to fly,” admitted direc- tor Carey Nicholson. “It’s a domi- nant element in the show.” In a theatre with limited stage area and no wings, it’s also a tech- nical issue, one that director Carey Nicholson and her crew have had to solve. “There are so many technical ele- ments to the show. It is a new part for me to work with so much special effects stuff. Peter has to have some magic about it. Theatre is illusion.” The play (not the musical) fea- tures pirate fights, a ticking crocodile and the flying. You’ll have to go see the play to find out how Peter and all manage to fly. “We’re working from the text that would have been in use between 1904 and 1926. Barrie kept adapting and changing the text. It is, I think, the final distillation of the play.” Nicholson said the last scene was actually written by Barrie as a separate, one-act play, called The Afterthought. It was not part of the original play. Some elements were changed for the musical and the Disney movie, so this script has more elements found in ‘Finding Neverland’ and the recent ‘Peter Pan’ movie, Nicholson said. ‘Peter Pan’ features a cast of 35. “Only five of them are over 18 and the rest of highly accomplished, energetic and talent youth. It is like harnessing a huge energy source,” she said. (She’s used to huge casts with lots of kids, having directed ‘Alice in Wonderland’ for the Borelians and ‘Seussical! The Musical’ with Onstage Uxbridge last season.) “It’s a play for kids about adults and it’s a play for adults about kids. The adults are having fun because they get to play too.” Peter is played by Tyler Keating, of Bowmanville, a member of the Oshawa Little Theatre youth group. The nasty Hook is Graeme Pow- ell, of Port Perry, who last appeared with the Borelians as a young lawyer in last season’s ‘Crimes of the Heart’. Appearing as Wendy is Ali Crone, of Whitby, who will be seen in Grease with Port Perry’s Choral De Lite’s Musical Theatre. She plays the young and adult Wendy. Mr. Darling is played by theatre veteran, Andy Williamson, who has worked with the Borelians both on stage and behind the scenes. Mrs. Darling is Rita Gould, of Uxbridge. She played the Cat in the hat in Se- ussical. The other Darlings are Liam Lynch as John and Michael William- son as Michael. The cast is from all over Durham, including Ajax, Oshawa, and Ash- burn. And it’s very much a family affair. There are five pairs of siblings in the show. Plus Nicholson’s entire fam- ily is involved, including her mom, Sheila Nicholson, who’s in charge of costumes. They are playing on a set that’s a basic structure, with the particular environments (pirate ship, Darling’s nursery, Wendy’s house) changing around it. “We’re working with a set that allows us to play,” Nicholson said. There are scenes whey they are al- most all on stage.” She and husband Andy William- son designed the set. As for the costumes, apart from the Darling house, there’s no set time period, so you’ll notice a mix- ing of styles and periods. In charge of props, set decoration and some special touches with the costumes is Jen Hardie, whom Nich- olson calls “a production magician.” Hardie will also lend her magic touch to the Borelians’ next show, ‘Kiss the Moon’, ‘Kiss the Son’, com- ing this spring. ‘Peter Pan’ is also a benefit for two hospitals, the Ormond Street in Eng- land and Lakeridge Port Perry. The English hospital was the recipient of royalties from the play, at Barrie’s request, until the copyright ran out. Nicholson decided it was be good to see that hospital and the local one benefit from this production. “The man loved kids so much, it seems like the right thing to do,” she said. Throughout the play’s run, an art draw will be held each perfor- mance, with works by local artists, such as Pamela Meacher, Louise Whale, Linda Edwards and Claudia McCabe, available and on display in the patron’s lounge. Draw tickets can be purchased before the shows and during intermission. Proceeds will go to both hospi- tals and the Borelian’s scholarship fund. Two extra shows have been added. ‘Peter Pan’ now runs Feb. 20, 21, 26, 27, 28, March 6 and 7 at Town Hall 1873, Queen and Simcoe streets. Showtime is 8 p.m. plus 2 p.m. shows on Feb. 21 and 28. Tickets are $21 for adults, $19 for students and seniors, with EyeGo tickets ($5) for high school students with proper ID available for all shows. You can get tickets to the play and dinner packages at The Front Porch, Francesco’s and Pickles and Olives at Meta4 Contemporary Craft Gal- lery, 200 Queen St., 905-985-2435, 1-888-985-2435. Annandale juniors double up at zone playdown Boxers ready to rumble at nationals Ajax’s Karatella, Price back for more at cadet ‘C’, junior event By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com AJAX — Two area fighters will give it their best shots in the national ring in Edmonton next week. Ahmed Karatella, a.k.a AK 47, of Ajax, and Mitchell Price, a fighter with Pickering’s Liverpool Boxing Club, will fly westward for the Ca- nadian National Junior and Cadet ‘C’ Boxing Championships from Feb. 24 to March 1. Karatella will compete in the 48-kilo weight class in the junior category, while Price will do bat- tle in the 57-kilo weight class in the cadet ‘C’ division. A 17-year-old J. Clarke Richard- son student, Karatella says this year’s nationals will mark his sec- ond time at the prestigious event. Last year, he lost his first match to a heavily favoured Quebecer but, this year, he’s hoping to fight his way to a podium finish. “I’ve been training really hard, so I feel really confident; I’m ready to go,” said Karatella, who fights out of Tiller’s Boxing Club that moved from Ajax to Scarborough last year. “I believe I’ve learned from my mistakes last year, so I’m going to come back twice as hard. “I have a lot more experience since last year. I’ve been doing a lot more sparring. I’m better and stronger and a lot more prepared this time.” Chris Tiller, Karatella’s coach, said his fighter will be in good company in his weight class, so he’ll need to be at his best. “There are a couple of good cadet fighters who’ve moved up to junior, so he has his work cut out for him.” Price, 14, is looking for bigger and better accomplishments at the 2009 nationals after earning a bronze medal in Windsor in 2008. “I’m hoping to go all the way (to gold) this year,” said Price, a four-year member of the Liver- pool club. “I have to be ready and be on top of my game.” Price believes he’s improved immensely over the 14-year-old fighter who made his debut at nationals a year ago. “I’m feeling a lot better than I was. I think I’ve improved a lot over the last few months,” he said, noting his fierce determination in the ring has, so far, set him apart from other fighters in his weight class. “I think I put in a lot more ef- fort than others who are naturally gifted and I don’t give up.” In preparation for Edmonton, Price has been working out four nights a week at the Pickering club with coach Preston Roberts, the only coach he’s ever known in the sport. As well, he augments his training by working out two days a week at his Stouffville home. Roberts said Price will be in tough in his weight class. “There are four others in his weight class -- two from Alberta, one from Newfoundland and one from Quebec -- and they will all be good. All five of them will be about even,” predicted Roberts. Al Rivett/ News Advertiser photo Ahmed Karatella, a.k.a.
