—The way in which the price of
food stuffs has been soaring lately
should lend weight to the ' argu-
ments in favor of a ''back to the
farm', movement. All farm pro-
ducts to -day are bringing higher
prices than in many years. Eggs
are worth their weight in 'gold; all
meats are exceptionally high; and
the great demand for substitutes
has, raised the price of vegetables.
With such•a price it should not be
difficult to make'a farm pay. The
help problem on the farm for the
coming season is already confront-
ing` thefarmer, and he is on the
hunt Tor a good man, even if
it is several months before work
begins. This is the hardest pro-
position that a fhrmer has to deal
with, and it has become a serious
one of late years.—Ex.

' . NOTES AND COMMENTS:
The Ralway Commission has de-
. ....tided .that the maximum passen-
ger rate to be charged by either
the Canadian Pacific or Grand
Trunk shill _ be three cents per
mile. This decision affects parti-
cularly that part of the Grand
Trunk east of Toronto, where the
rates:have always been excessive.
For example, the fare from Pick-
ering to Toronto, a-distaneeof less
than 22} miles has been eighty
-,--tents. "By the decision of the
y.Railway `Commission, it shall not
be more thanseventy cents. W.
F. Maclean, M. P., of South York,
has been most energetic in his agi-
Nation for cheaper fares, and while
be does not enjoythe confidence
- ;••of the government, the reduction
in fares is no doubt dile partly to
his efforts. . The railway compan-
ies haye sixty days in which to. re-
.arrauge their fares schedule. •
A bill is -at present before the
Private Bills Committee of the

much anxiety among. the resi-

' of the bill is- to incorporate the'
Artesian Well Corlipany, of Whit-

• Rich fond Hill, Wee on and To-
ronto Junction with water from
—.the artesian wells in Whitchurch.
Large deputations • from East
York appeared before the Private
Bills Committee to oppose the in-
corporating of the company. • The

it will take away their 'water

and farmers oppose the passage
of the bill on the grounds that it
will materially reduee their sup
fly of water -and thtl - 1f11ure their
dairy business as well as in other
ways-, autl they object . to the
legislature diverting the stream
from its natural Bourse. . Atncr,.1ig

and that it would be a great in-

decided to ask the government

igate the conditions provailing at

purpose of deciding whether the

One day last week an incident

was asked by his employer to per -
:form a certain task. He refused
.on the ground . that he had only
had fifty-five initiates instead of
sixty for his noon hour, and re-
' fused to turn a hand until the
boar was up. In consequence of
his refusal he was dismissed, and
s• -for not receiving•a week's notice,
entered a suit for x$14, half of
.'which was for the week's notice,
•• which he claimed he should have
•had, having in the meantime re-
:',', fused the amount due him' for

:offered him by his employer. 'The
',evidence showed -that he had pre-
,vionslyused his employers' time
_for personal ltse, and which his
employer• gratuituously' Offer:ed.

had to pay casts, as there was•no

to recognize his real worth; some
other man will. A few days ago
we 'read' of a man in the services
of the C. P. R., being offered
$30,000 to assume the manage --
meat of one of the leading Ameri-
can railways. That man was
one who proved that he was
worth more than he was receiv-
ing. Had he, under a false notion
of independence,. • determined to
give only Dire dollar's worth of
labor for every dollar he received,
he would now be occupying the
same position that he occupied
years ago. A man is standing in
his own light, when he makes his
employer pay for every cent he
earns. The man, who drops his
tool at the first sound -of the.
twelve o'clock whistle and refuses,
to take it up until the last sound
of theone o'clock bell has died away
is being watched by his employer.
The boy who takes -as much in-
terest in the business as his em-
ployer, and who feels that the
success of the concern for which
he is working depends upon his
own efforts, is marked for pro-
motion. We believe the trades
unions have much to do :with
instilling into the minds of em-
ployers this idea of giving as.
little as possible in return for
what is received. The unions
may be doing a good work in
some ways, but there is no doubt
that in many cases their demands
go beyond reason, and that much
of the trouble between labor and
capital is due to the unreason-
able demands of the former.
The successful man is be who
gives full measure, and that
idea. should be instilled in-
to the minds,,of .the young
that they may mak a success in
Lige.

Rheumatism
I have found a tried and tested cure for Rhetr
matt+m! Not a retaedy that will straighten the
distorted limbi'nf chronic pipplee: nor turn bony
growths back to flesh again. That is impossible.
Bin I can now surely kill the pains and pangs of
this deplorable, disease,
In Germany --with a Chemist in the City of
Darmstadt—I found the last ingredient with
which Dr. Shoop'a Rheumatic Remedy was made
a perfected, dependable prescription. Without
that last ingredient. I successfully treated many.
many cases of Rheumatism : but now, at last. it tml-
formly cures all curable cases of this heretofore
much dreaded disease. Those sand -like granular
wastes, found in Rheumatic Blood. seem to dissolve .
and pass away under the action of this remedy as
freely as does sugar when added to pure water.
And then, when dissolved, these poisonous wastes
freely pass from the system, and the cause of
Rheumatism is gone.. forever.. There is now no
real need= -no actual excuse to iiuffer longer with-
in* help. We sell, and in confidence recommend

On common fences the continuous
wire stays are sure to bend and the locks
to lose their grip under continual pres-
sure of your horses or cattle. And once
they do, the top wire, soon followed by.
those below, will sag and destroy the
efficiency of your fence.
Nothing like that can happen to our
Dillon Hinge -Stay Fence, The abort,
stiff bard steel wire in outhinge-stays
cannot bend when the lateral wires are
weighted down, owing to their being so
short and jointed at each strand wire.
Pressure of a horse on the top wire brings the "hinges" in the stays into action
and prevents them from bending, and when pressure is relieved the fence springs back
into place again:
The lateral wires are High -Carbon Hard Steel and coiled to provide for
expansion and contraction by heat and cold, and are also crimped at the Intersection
of the stays and strands to prevent the stays from slipping sideways—therefore no looks
are needed.
Buy the Dillon Hinge -Stay Fence. It's "twice as strong." Twice as good an
investment. Catalogue free -

POLICE VILLAGE.
The regular meeting of the police
trustees was held on Monday evening
in R. S. Dillingham's shop. Members
all present. The minutes of the last
meeting weri read and adopted.
The secretary reported the purchase
of seal for Village at cost of $4, which
had been paid. Secretary also report-
ed receipts as follows : Interest—on
deposit -in . Western Bank. $1.56.;
R. S. Dillingham, for extra planking,
13.18.
_ A communication was read from D.
R. Beaton, Tp. Clerk. offering use of
large planer and grader With -traction
engine a
streets on condition that village pay
share of expense. incurred. Letter also
btated.that statute labor in village had
been commuted at in per day and also
that our road commissioner had been
appointed to .collect same.. The offer
of the township was declined but -the
secretary was instructed to request the
use of one of the small graders for as
early a date as possible.
The police trustees also objected to
the action of . the township council in
appointing the road commissioner se
collector of statute labor moneys in
the village. They considered the pro-
per person to collect such takes is the
township collector. The township
council are asked to amend the statute
labor by-law, so that these taxes be.
collected as formerly.
The attention of the township coun-
cil is also directed to the condition of
the iron bridge of Duffin's creek at the
west side of the village. The said
bridge is badly in need of re -pointing,
and the railingis.in a very unsafe con-
dition.
A -resolution was unanimously pass-
ed protesting against the unjust dis-
crimination by the G. T. R. in -the
matter of passenger and freight rates
cast of Toronto, as well as the accom-
modation provided. However, the
daily papers on Tuesday ..morning.
showed.that the 'Railway Commission
had dealt with the matter of passenger
rates, compelling the railways to pro-
vide first-class accommodation at three
cents per mile....
The Board then adjourned -meet
again on the 3rd Monday in it at
8 p. m. _
