During the past week, one of the leading characters of the last ,half century has been paying an -official visit to Toronto, General • •_;Booth, of the Salvation Army. 'When the Salvation Army first -set out on its mission, that of up- '• .lifting the fallen in the slums and a reaching the multitude Who never -.entered a church. it was looked. .upon as an aggregation Of cranks. A Salvation Arwy- soldier- was ,looked upon as a legitimate objet•t :for -the sneers -and contemptuous remarks of the multitude. They were exposed to all tot ins of in- ' tdignities and not would ehatn- ,pion their cause. 3lany of them were cast into prison,' martyrs of :humanity. This state of affairs kept up for years. 'But key pati- -enee and forbearance they lived - -down all prejudice. They proved '+to the world '. that they were .a mighty force: in the uplifting, of fallen humanity, and that they `were the friend- of the helpless +c riminal and of the poverty- stricken -By their peculiar meth- ods they are enabled to reach a class that the regular churches ;'•fail to reach. Their work is not -antagonistic - to - the regular churches, but complementary. -• Hand in 'hand with them they carry on the great work of the Christian Church. One depart- -tnent of their work which now concerns Canada is that of assiat- ing worthy men and women to emigrate to Canada. Last year some 211,000 -emigrants came to !Canada from Great Britain, and - this year a larger number will probably come with the assist- ance rendered by the Salvation Army: That the Salvation Army is now recognized as a potent .factor in the social and temporal _as well as in the spiritual life of .the community is evidenced b -the fact that General. Booth while -- in Toronto, was the guest of the - Lieutenant-Governor,.Lud rtti-Suu- -day at the great mass' meeting in -Massey Hall. -the chair was men - by the -Lieutenant-Governor,: 'Sir Mortimer Clark. and cm the platform were the premier and nether leading members of the Gov- -- eminent,' the -leader of the Oppo- - sition, and men .occupying the highest Positions in the social, •literary and religious life of . To - route, both Protestant and Catho- `., • Iic, assembled to do -Honor to the `leader of this great organization. 'The term, Salvation army, is no longer one of reproach, but a name sweessfuland noblestworks ear- 's -led on since the time of Christ. _GREENWOOD. • .•'Tbe folloviing is a list of the pnrchas • ers at Arthur Johnston's sale Iast" week Both Symptoms of Organio Derangement in Women with -the price paid for each animal., _The amoont realtaed on the Bala of forty animals was 117.455.00 ' Carnation Queen t imp .5 years to Peter White.
