One of the persons most deserv- ing of pity is the rich man's son. It is true that he has wealth and is surrounded by all the luxnriee • that wealth can procrre. He has never known what is meant by -the "pangs of hunger," or the want of a warm comfortable bed, and when sickness has overtaken him he has always received the best of care. .But notwithstanding his wealth ' his position is not an enviable one. From his earliest infancy he has been pampered up, and treated in • a manner not conducive to the de- . ivelopment of a manly man. He has never been thrown upon his own resourses and thus he becomes a weakling.. If misfortune were to overtake him and he were to • lose his wealth, he would be per- . 'Pfectly helpless. There are many . rich mens sons to whom these statements could not apply. but there is a host of them whose lot • is far from being an enviable one. When they leave home to enter college, the,ir time is not spent in acquiring knowledge and in fitting themselves for the stern duties of life, but is spent in forming habits that mean their Ultimate ruin. They are given an abundance of .sspending.money and they have no ::~..difficulty in gathering around . them boon compcnion9 to assist • - th.etn in getting rid of their cash. Drinking, gambling and other ..,ruinous habits soon accomplish their destruction. Satan always finds something for idle hands to do and his most desirable servant is the rich man's son. Harry K. Thaw, now on trial for .his life, is a sample of these unfortunates. - Had he, when a young lad, been given a weekly allowance of five cents for spending money, and set to work to learn some useful occur potion he would most probably be now a- useful - and respectable • member of society. instead of languishing in prison in New York city, an outcast ' from society. de- spised but pitied. with nothing more to hope for from this world. -,zeliould'he escape the electric chair. But he is Only one of a host of .young men whose lot is similar to • his own, though they May' not have committed actual murder. The young man is indeed unfor - tuuate if his fathers tithe is so taken -up with looking after his. riches, that he cannot spare a -moment for the son's benefit. •His riches is a curse to him and to his ,.family. Instead of bringing him comfort and enjoyment, his gold 'is laying up. for him a store 6,1 -:anguish and sleepless nights. Young man, if 'you are poor and ,`forced. to _ wo ' °..> ---a l'ving; cors pressive of a happy disposition and a clear conscience. The call -notes of both sexes are alike—a sharp, char- acteristte peek. The male of the Rose - breasted species has crown and back black, rump white; throat black; breast rose -red; belly white. . Specimens of this bird may be seen at Pickering Village in the collections of Mr. John Gordon and Dr. Bateman. The male of the Pine (irot, beak is rose -pink in color; back brownish; lower belly gray; wings and tail brownish black. Most of the Grosbeaks seen in Pickering Village areeither females or young males which yet lack the bright colors of matured age. All I have seen were robust birds of a smoky gray color tinged with greenish yellow. 1•n every case they were quietly feeding on the seeds of the mountain ash, once at Mr. Bundy's, once at Mr.. Findlay's and twice at Richard Moore's. Then were not very shy and one could get within a few feet of them.' They are of a soci- able gentle ,disposition, all willing to share alike. Should any one care to look these birds up, a description of them.may be found in "The Birds of Ontario," by Mcllwrsith and also in "Bird Life," by Frank M. Chapman. The latter also contains excellent col- ored plates of the same birds. Both these t000ks are in the Pickering Pub- lic Library. A short time ago; I heard a success- ful minister preaching in this village state that when a boy on the farm at home, there wasn't a bird flew' over the farts but he knew its name. That showed his thoroughness. How many of our boys and girls can 'truthfully say the same, or, for that matter, how many of our school teachers? " The teachers should know this that they may instruct the pupils and this is a good time of the year in which to be- gin the study by asking their pupils what birds they have noticed. In some schools pupils are required to note the dates on which the different birds arrive. Why should we encourage bird study? The economic value of birds to man lies in. the services they render by preventing the. undue increase of insects, in devouring small rodents such as mice, in destroying the seeds f harmful plants and In acting as singing „ -rrily in ' Mr. Findlay's' garden. A Blue -jay has been with us at intervals all winter. Outside the village, bird visits would be more fre- quent. Yours truly, ' R. M. BATEala s. Pickering, Feb'y, 27th, 1907. .lVew Advertisements. The insects and slugs would simply eat op all the orchards and crops in that time." The scientist finds this study of marked value for purposes of comparison. It is also useful for training the eye and the faculty of observation. It also has an aesthetic use and this alone is 'suffi- cient inducement for its pursuit. To know the birds is to have added to the pleasures of life.- Dryden says "It a straw can tickle a mans -it is an instru- ment of happiness.." Lubbock also adds that if it does that, it is. also an instrument -of health." Birds fulfil the same use. Each day should be counted memorable which brings you a new friend ;mons- the birds.
