I invested in a Small flock of.pure-bred. Cheviot eheep five years ago, writes Mrs o A. Eldridge. They were somew run down and very poor in flesh, lau had good blood drom the best strains in !tie country. Two years ago, I boughti still another flock. I have gieeri them, personal attention and the. best of care. 1- have disposed of all the poor ones. 1. now have a splendid bunch. LasL year,. eepeciallY, they pee me some very gra-i tifying returns. They are a very hand- sorrie 4 well as hardy breed of sheep.. I get great pleasure as well as profit ire. caring for them. I now wintering 94 head Of these, ewess are with lamb due in February a March. They are in- line condition., I -am feeding alfalfa and clever hay, and bean tops for roughage. I also give them a grain ration once a day consiste ing a whole oats, bran and oil meal. They were fed purripkins in the late fall. r also feed turnip.s. small potatoes or - carrots once or twice a week. I think some sort of root crop is very beneficial: and I find my sheep do especially well when fed along these lines. This is es- pecially taue when the ewes -are suck- ling their lambs. At this time of the years, it is impossible, of course, tO have grasea and some succutent feee like mots o_f. scene sort, is very necesasary. I think dipping is very iMportant. It is -almost impossible to ikeep sheep in, good condition if they are infested with ticks. I usually dip my sheep as late in the fall as poible.. I select a warm sun- shiny day for the werk. also dip them a second time in the spring after sheet- ing. I give close attention to my ewesi at lambing time. As goon as they have had their lambs they -are separated from pen by themeelyes until the lambs are three or four days old. • Cheviot ewes - usually give very, little mr no trouble, as they desik-e good mothers, producing strong lambs and supplying. an aim- dant:yield. of milk. Cheviots may not be as prbhtiable as sarte other breeds, but I find it more satisfactdry to raise one large, strong Lemb than two undersized ones. Many ur my •ew.es have twins.-- Last winter 40. gave the 62 lambs of Which 56. were raised. -As sooh -es the Iambs begin to - eat. they are given •a room by themselves with a creep ..e3 they can run in and out.. as they please. They are fed as -much grain as they will eat three times a day. The very beet Clover hay 0 kept in the rack Waive them so that they can 'Mb - hie as much as theY like at all times, The troughs are fixed 'so that the lambs cannot get, Mite them and disturb_ the. At first they are led ground nals.-and. bran, later, cracked corn. bran and' oill Meal. As my sheep are kept in very warm quarters. I shear them as early.as March 15 4) April 1. We usually sheer by hand. Clipping them as cicee as pos- sible. I believe the hand machine would be advisable, •as I understand that it is giving good sticcefas wherever it is Used. The fleete of each- animal is weighed and u -record is kept, so that I know the. 'amount of..weol that each sheep pro- duces.
