From present appearances, - the chances are good for a lively contest. For the reeveship, we • kiear the names of Messrs. Jaynes McBrady, Jas. Todd, Thos. Beare, Jas. Underhill, Jas. Richards and John Gerow mentioned. For the position of councillor the follow- ing names are being mentioned : Messrs. Todd, Gerow, Wilson, and Palmer, who are at present on the board; also Messrs. D. E, Pugh, J. A. White, John Henderson, Geo. White, W. Geo. Scott, Geo. Philip, S. Stevenson, T. C. Osborne, Dr. •Bateman, W. V. Richardson, W. • A. Fuller. W. Mor'ecombe, Andrew Annan, Geo. Leng, H. Spencer, J. B. Madill and Jas. McFarlane. We often pride cul selves on our 'British ju-tice.•' but often, when , sive read of thesentences imposed for committing vario-0 crime-, 'wt are inclined to the belief that ' British justice is a +elockery. Juilgos tuay able to rc•coticile tilt' -e two sentences, hilt it is impossible for us to do so. It is generally eon• ceded that a ratan w lio. betray- a trust is a greater criminal, than • the burglar or sneak thief, and if • no, why should his bulli -lament not • :be in keeping with hi, criu,e. The anan who finds it impossible to se- cure employment may -teal a loaf • of bread to save his family from • !starvation. If he is detected, he or- --- is stamped as a• criminal of the darkest bee. and punishment is ..meted out to hie -a•^cordiugly-. But :if a,man occupies a high position socially, has wealthy and influ- • ential friends, and occupies a, re- sponsible position in the 1-tlsiness • world, he may steal his. hundred -thousands, bring ruin to . many and plunge widows into despair, and is given a 'paltry eighteen months imprisonment. If this is .law it surely is not justice. The , man without friends may be tramped upon, scorned and cast i Ito prison,4r committing a small • crime, but -the man with influ , ential -friends must be has}died • ently, and with care and his pun- ishment must be of -a character ;*hat will not hurt. - . . newly rnar-ried sister and a fur for his mother..
