ESCAPED ARREST IN COFFIN.
Strange and Gruesome Device Re-
. sorted to by Swindler.
A strange and somewhat gruesome
device, by which a man nain.d
Baker, charged the other day with
fraud, succeeded ip once evading ar-
rest, and a second time in dodging.
a summons, was described at the
West Ham Police Court, London
England. '
On one occasion, when "wanted,"
13aker was understood to be at an
undertaker's shop at Manor Park,
and the officers of the court went
there to apprehend him. But he
could not be found, though the pla te.
was thoroughly searched.
un trestles in the shop was a cof-
fin, in ‘shich 'the police were inforni-
ed there lay a body. In the priisenoa
of the officers the coffin was screwed
up and taken away to, as was inti-.
mated, -a public,. inortuary.
A day or so later it was discover-
ed that the supposed dead man in
the coffin was no other than Mr.
i3aker, whose friends had collaborat-
ed IA ith him iri this way of evading
arrest.
On the second occasion a judgment
summons was to be served. This
time a woman at the house said that
Mr, Baker was very ill and could not
be seen,
When the officers next called the
blinds were all down, and they were
told that the defendant had (lied that
morning. Then came a coffin, an,'
the -body" was again retnoved,
After each of these adventures Mr,
Raker started business - in :another
part of London,
lie has now been sent for trial on
the charge of fraud.

Our usually quiet -village was
thrown into a state of wild excite-
ment Thursday afternoon w hen
tee, flames of fire was seen to
burst from the upper storey of
P R. Hoover & Sun's large flour
mill. Just one hour from the
time the fire starte(l, the mill was
burnt to the ground, nothiug
could be done to save it and with
great difficulty the residence
stables and other buildings were
saved. • This is a great loss to the
village and country.. The sym-
pathy of all is extended to Alph
and Wm. Hoover in the severe
loss they have had -in the destruc-
tion ofstheir mill. It is their in-
tention to rebuild at once.
