NOTES AND COMMENTS. • The great salary grab by the members of the House of Com- mons Last week is being denounc- ed in every quarter. Throughout the whole country the press unite in denouncink the action. Grit and Tory have both been parties to the transaction. The leader of ,the opposition, R. L. Borden, missed a great opportunitby by not opposing the action, but he snd his supporters seemed just as anxious as the ministerialists to enrich themselves at the expense a the country. Those who enter political life to -day do not appear So be prompted to do so by their strong patriotic feelings but seem - to be actuated by selfish motives. The automobile nuisance does .not appear to be, decreasiug. but, iron the contrary, appeals to be Ay -eater now than ever. Every rear sees an increasing number of !these machines. with a propor- tionate increase in the number of ;reekless drivers and reckless own- ers. The number of persons kill- ed and of those w hu have been 'seriously wounded, as a re -lilt of .-eareles-ness or .sheer recklessness is such that more extrerue .meas- - • tares will have to be adopted in . corder to insure safety to the public Laws have been pawed by the legislature intended to prevent too rapid running as well as i -o ' other ways to protect the public. But these laws are totally disre-. ••gar•ded by some running automo- -• biles. In many cases they refuse to stop when signalled to do so. -' 'Often the numbers on their ma- rbines cannot he .seen as the speed is so great and- the numbers are too small, and usually hidden - from t'iety by the dust. It is 'quite an easy matter for the dri- n•er to cover their ricimbera with. 4s greasy or oily substance. -o that ..ta small till,, alt of do -t ‘sill fluick- lty conceal their nintiber making it .';impossible to identify the auto. it is nil uncommon thing to see an ants) passing through our village st the rate of 21) or 25 utiles an _ hour., even when. there are runner - :,1341S horses ou thestreets. The "penalty for violating the• law ..should be made more severe. A fine of 520 or 525 and costs is nothing to the man who can squander several thousands on an • automobile. A fine of 525 to a man .sand as Cawthra Mulock. who can boast of his millions, is no more than a dime to an ordin- ' :very individual. To such.charac- ters nothing but unprisonment will prevail upon theni to reduce their speed to the limit prescribed ,.:.by law. It is regrettable that our • best roads should be given to the :almost exclusive use at certain .seasons of the year, of i utomo- bilists who contribute not a cent • to their maintenance. It is said that the automobile has come to stay But such is not the case if . 'their present reckless speed is kept up. It is also said that hor- ses will soon get used to them as ., they did in the case of the bicycle With the unearthly noise made by the automobile some horses will never get used. . a church in which the late Rev. His good wife is a model housekeeper and expert cook, and patrons of the Frauklin can always depend on being well served and comfortable. Haying Is we-11— this section, and two or three more fine days will see the larg- est crop harvested that we have had for many years. A few fields of clover which was cut early last week was injured by the wet, but quantity cut was small. Barley and fall wheat are ripening fast and next weak, if fine, will see most. of these crops in the barn. Both wheat and barley will be a splendid crop. Goose wheat and oats are looking remarkably well, and one farmer has estimated that his oats will yield 75 bushels to the sere and wheat 45. The pea crop on high land -looks well. on the low lands it will scarcely pay for the seed. Roots never looked better. The corn crop, which looked bad ten days ago, 1s coming on in great shape. The pastures never looked better at this season of the year. Alto- gether the farmers' prospects were never brighter.—Ecomono- mist. - Mr. George Lemon, hotel -keeper of Aurora, had a narrow escape from being victimized by a horse thief ou Friday night last. A man drove up to the hotel and offered tosell horse and rig. Be- ing suspicions, Mr. Lemon sent the constable and kept the visi- tor busy until the guardian of the law arrived and placed him under arrest. It was subsequent- ly discovered that the animal was one that was stolen from New- market on the previous Thursday night. Piakham's Vegetable Compound Rests Upon the Fact that It Realy Does Make Siok Women Well Thousands upon thousands of Cana- dian women have been restored to health by Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegeta- ble Compound. Their letters are on file in Mrs. Pinkham's office, and prove this statement to be a fact and not a mere boast. Overshadowing indeed is the succeea of this great medicine, and compared with it all other medicines and treat- ment for women•are experiments. Why has Lydia E. Pinkham's Vege- table Compound accoaaplished its wide- spread results tor good ? Why has it lived and thrived and . done its glorious work for a quarter of a century ? • Simply and surely because of its ster- ling worth. The reason no other med- icine has even approached its success is plainly and positively because there is no other medicine in the world so good for women's ills. - The wonderful power of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound over the diseases of womankind is not be- cause it is a stimulant—not because it is a palliative, but simply because it is the most wonderful tonic and recon- structor ever discovered to act directly upon the uterine system, positively crerea-disease and displacements and restoring health and vigor. Marvelous cures are reported trona all parts of the country by women who have been cured, trained nurses who have• witnessed cures, and physicia s who have recognized the virtue In Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Com- pound, and are fair enough to give credit where it is due. If physicians dared to be frank and open, hundreds of them would acknowledge that they constantly prescribe Lydia E. Pink - ham's Vegetable Compound in severe cases of female ills, as they know by experience that it will effect a cure. Women who are troubled with painful or irregular menstruation, backache, bloating (or flatulence), leucorrhoea, falling, inflammation or ulceration of the uterus, ovarian troubles, that bearing -down " feeling, dizziness, faintness, indigestion, nervous pros- tration., or the blues, should take im- mediate action to ward off the serious consequences and be restored to health and strength by taking Lydia E. Ptak - ham's Vegetable Compound. Anyway, write to Mrs. Plnicbam, Lynn. Maas., for advice. It's free and always hel2tal. Stouffvllle. • Mrs. (Dr.) D. C. At n certain street corner in this town groups - of young men -may be• seen standing, before and during the evening eh rtt-ch services, commenting upon the passers by, talking and laugh- ing together in a boisterous and nnseemely manner, stealing up to church door's and peeking in, and :in other sways making themselves a nuisance. If these poling sten knew how badly it looks, and how greatly their actions are talked of among others, they would siirely discontinue -the habit, for of course they have no desire to be a nuisance to anyone."
