Dr. Talmage preached from the following -text :—" And - he mid° the • -_ layer of brass, and the foot of it of brass, of the looking -glasses of the • women assembling."—Exodus. xxxviii. We often hear about theGospel in • John, and the Gospel in Luke, and the • Gospel in hil4thew, but there is just as certainly a Gospel of Moses, and a Gospel of Jeremiah, and a Gospel of David. In other w'ords, Christ is as certainly to be found in the Old Testament as in the New.' When the Israelites were inuchieg • through the wilderness they carried their church with them. They called - • it the Tabernacle. It was a pitched _• • tent, very costly, very beautiful, The framelyvork was made of forty-eight boards of acacia wood, set in sockets, kit —. of silver. ii`he curtains of the place * were purple, and scarlet, and blue, and • tine linen, and were hung with moat artistio loops. The candlestick of that tabernacle had shaft and branch, and howl of solid gold; and the figure of cherubim that stood there had wings of gold; and there were lamps of gold, and snuffers of gold, and tongs of gold, and rings of gold; so that seep- ticism has sometimes asked where did all those precious stones come from? It is not my Iplace to furnish the pre- cious stones; it is only to ,tell that , they were there. I wish more especially to speak of ' the laver that was built in the midst of that ancient tabernacle. It ,was a _ great basin in which the priests wash- ed their hands and feet. The water came down from the basin in spouts, , • • and passed away after the cleaning. This laver, or basin, was made out of - the looking -glasses of the women who , had frequented the tabernacle, and who had made these their contribu- tions to the furniture. These, looking - glasses were not made of glass, but they were brazen. The brass was of a very superior -quality, and polished until it reflected easily the features 'of those who looked into it. So that this laver of looking -glasses spoken of In my text did double work; it net only furnished the water in whih the priests washed themselvea, but it also, on its shining, polished surface, . pointed out the spots of pollution on the face which needed "ablution. Now, my Christian friends, as everything in - . that ancient tabernacle was ,sugges- tive of religious truth, and, •for the most part, positively symbolical of such • truth, I shall take that laver of look- • ing-glasses- spoken of in the text as all suggestive of the • Gospel, which first shows us our sins as in a mirror, and then washes them away by 'Divine ablution. , "Oh, happy- day, happy daY, -• When Jesus washed my sins away." ,INow, my friends, I have to say that this is the only looking -glass in Which a man can see himself sails is. There are some mirrors that • _ FLATTER THE FEATURES' and make you look better thee you are. Then there are other mirrors that distort your features, and make you look worse than you are; but %sant to tell you that this looking,- - glass of the Gospel shows a man just as lie is. When the priests entered the ancient tabernacle, one glanct, at the burnished side of this laver show- . ed them their need of cleansing. $o this Gospel shows the soul its need • 1 1of Divine washing. " All hirtve sinned, and come short of the glory of God." That is one showing. " All we, like sheep, have gone astray." That is anoth- . er showing. "From the crown of, the head to the sole of the feet, there is no health in us." That is anther showing. The world calls these "de - teens," "imperfections," ,or eccentri- cities," or "erratic he aid'our," ' or "wild oats," or "high livi g ;" but the • Gospel calls them sin—tr n iegreseion— flthwthe abominable thi g that God • hates. It was just on glance at that mirror that made mil cry out • - "Oh, wretched man tha I am, who ahall deliver me from his body of death f" And that made avid cry out "Purge me with hyssop, aid I 'shall' be clean." And that a e Martin • -- Luther cry out: "Oh, y 'sins, my, 611381" am not talking about bad habits. You and I donot need any . If I un- derstand the Word of God, its first -an- nouncement is that we are I st. I , care not, my brother, how ma nific- ewly you•rnay have been born, or What may have been your heri(tge or ance.sCry, you are lost by reas n of sin unless you appreciate that truth, andare prepared for the mere and the PARDON OP THE GOSPE you say, "what ia the us of all this, of Showing a itnan's faults when he can't get rid of them 1" Nonel "What_wate the use of that burnished surface to this laver of looking gimes. es, spoken of in the text, if it 'only showed the spots bn the, tenance, and the need of washing , and //there. was 110 - int; th wash with?" Glory be to God, 1 find this laver of looking - glasses was filled with freah water every morning and the priest no soon- er looked on its burnished side, and !law his need' of cleansing, than he washed and was cleen. Glorious type of the Gospel of my Lord Jesus that first shows a man his sin, and then washes it all away. I want you to notice that this laver in dhich the priests washed—this lav- er of looking-glasset3-•-was filled with fresh water every morning. The ser- vants of the tabernacle brought the water in buckets and poured it into this laver. So it is with the Gospel of Jesus Christ; it has a fresh salva- tion everyday. It is not a stagnant pool filled with accumulated corrup- tions. It is living water which is brought frown the eternal rock to wash away the sins 'of , yesterday—of one -moment ago. "Oh," says Some ane, "I was a Christian twenty years agol" That does not mean anything to me. What are you now f We are not talking, my .brother,. about par- don ten yearsoigo, but about now—n fresh' mtivatioat. Suppose to time of - war should .come, and I oould show the government I had been loyal to .it twelve years ago, would that excuse Me from taking an oath of allegiance flow f Suppose you asked me about my physical health, end I should say I was well fifteen years ago, that does nottety how I agi now. The Gospel of Jesus Christ 001088 and demands pre - sent_allegiance, present fealty!, pre- sent Moral health, and yet how many Ohristians there are seeking to live entirely onpast experience seem to have po experience of pratient mercy and pardon. When 1 Was on the sea, and there came up 11),, great storm, and officers, and crew, and passengers all thought we must go down, I began to think of my. life in- surance, and whether if I were taken away, my family would be cared for ; and then I thought: Is the premium paid up f and I said: "Yes." Then I felt comfortable. Yet there ere men who are looking back to ' PAST INSURANCE. .. -' ;' ..,. .:, ,* -:-. „:. 'They have let it run out, and. they have nothing for the present, no hope, uo pardon—falling back on the old in- su,rance policy of ten, twenty, thirty years ago. If I want to find out -how a friend feels towards me, do I go to the drawer and find some old yellow letters written to me 80M8 ten or twelve years ago? No, I go to the letter that was atampedlhe day before yesterday in the Post -office, and I -find how he feels towards ,ine. It is not in eegtard to old communica- tions we have with Christ, it es 'com- munications we have now, Are we not in sympathy with Him this morn- ing, and is He not in sympathy with us? Don't you spend so much of your time in hu.n,ting in the wardrobe for the old worn-out shoes of Christian profession. Come thin morning and take the glittering robe of Christ's righteousneas from the Saviour's hand. Yuu were plunged in the fountain of the Saviotres mercy a quarter of a century ago. That is nothing to me; I tell you to wash now in this laver of looking -glasses, and have your soul midcle,ao., 1 notice, alao, In regard to this lav- er of looking -glasses apoken of in the text, that the priests always washed both hands and feet. The watei came down in pouts, so that without leav- ing any filth in the basin, the priests washed both hands and feet. So the Gospel. of Jesus Christ musl touch the very extremities of our moral nature. A man cannot fence off a email part of bis spul, and says "Now, this is to be a garden in which I will have all the fruit and flowerof Christian obarioater, whilst outside of it shall be the Devil's commons." No, no; it, will be- all garden or none. I some- times hear. people say : Be"is a very goort man except in polities." , Then he Is not n good mon. A religion that will not take a man through an aut- umn election will not be worth any- thing to him in June, July or August; They ally he is ia useful aott,' of a man, but he*overreached in a bargain. 1 deny the statement. if he is a Cltaristian anywhere, he will be in his businese. it is very easy to be good in tLe pniyer-eheetings, with sur- roundings kindly and blessed, but not so easy to be a Christian behind the counter, when by one twitch of , the gouda you WU hide a flaw in the silk so that the crustonaer cannot see it. It is very easy to be a •Christia.n, with a Psalin-book in your hand, and A BIBLE IN YOUR I,A1'• but not aio easy when you go into a shopand falsely tell•themeictiant you -can get these goods at a cheaper rate in another store, so that he will sell them to you cheaper than he can af- ford to selil them. The fact is, the religion of Christ is all pervasive. If you rent a house, you expect full pos- session of it. You say: "Where are the keys of these rotnne 1 If I pay for thoi wilole house, 1 want poste -melon of these rooms." And the grace of God, when it comes to- a soul, takes full possession or goes away and takes no possession. it will ransack every room in the heart, every room in the life from cellar to attic, touching the very extrenities of hie nature. The priests 'washed both hands and feet. I remark further, that the laver of looking-glateies spoken cf- in the text, Was a very large laver. 1 always thought from the fact that so many washed there, and- also from the fact that Solomon a f temente when he cope. od that laver in the temple built it on a very large- scale, "lte it was large, and so auggeative of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and salvation by film— vest in its proVisions. The whole wOrld taay come and wash in this lav- er and be clean. The Gose! of Christ says pardon for ali,. but eapecially for the chief of sin- ners. I do no1 now think of a single passage that says a- small sinner may be save; but I do' tlaiuk of passages etht say a great sinner may be saved. a little tinged, so faintly hued, just tinged; w faintly colored you call hardly see.them, there is no ape- cial pardon promised in the Bible for those . ; but if. y be g air tig—re like crimson—then they shall be as snow_ Now, my brethren, I do not state this to put A premium on great iniquity. I merely say this to en- courage that man in this house who feels he is so far gone from God that there is no mercy for him. 1 want to tell Jul there is a good uhance. Why, PauL was a murderer. He assisted at the execution of .Stephen ; and' . • YET PAUL WAS SAbVED.- : The dying thief did everything 'bad; the 4lying thief was saved. Richard Baxt r swore dreadfully, but the -grace of G d met him, and Richard Baxter was aved. It is a vast laver. Go, and ell, everybody to -conie and wash in it. Let them come 'up from the- 'penit ntiaries and wash away their crimet. Let them come up from the almshouses and wash away their pov- erty. Let them come up from their grave and wash away their death. If •there be any one so worn out in sin that he cannot get up to the laver, you will, take -hold of his head and put your a ms around him, and I will take him i this glorious Bethesda, the t hold o his feet, and we Will plunge vast laver of God's. mercy and salva- tion. In Solomon's temple there were ten lavers and one molten sea; this great 11orVoir, in the midst of the temple, filled with water ; these lavers and thi4 molten sea adorned with fig. urea of palm branch, and oxen. and SeNeFe'iaelee•etrsamere. ft • gt1.9,11 • '.' ---...k•-•!(--Yee•-vaffiZeri4-1.7.47.41 . • .. • _ • :4-s. , -• • 6,44111: _ V.,•1 X1,.` "• -' ...ee„-(a /...,..- -• -1-. - - -,••• ,.• -/... • ' - 4,1, •-& ..t: I '..... 4. , • , .,, , , '''-' ''+' ' - ' ' ' • - s ;" ... .. • - . •,.. ..• ' -14 .1 2 - cows, and cherubim. I was reading the other day of Alexan- der the Great, who, when he was very thirsty, and standing at the head of his army, had brought to him a cup of water. He looked off upon his host, and said: "I cannot drink this, my men are all thirsty ;" and ,he dashed it to the ground. Blessed be God there is enough water fer all the lost—enough for captains and host. -"Whosoever will may come and take' of the water of life freely ;" a laver broad. as the earth, high as the heaven, and deep as 1145Bilu.t. . I notice, also, in regard to tale laver of looking-glaases spoken of in the text, that the washing in it was imperative and not optional. When the priest 'came into the tabernacle, you will find this in, the 30th chapter of Exodus, God tells them they must wash in that laver or die. The priest might have Said: "Can't I wash else- where f 1 washed in the laver at home, and now you wanti me to wash here." God says: "No matter whether you have washed before. Wash in this laver or die." "But," says the priest, "there is water just as clean as thie, why won't that do ?" "Wash here," says Gd "or die." So it is' with the Gospel of • Christ—it -is imperative. . There is ooly this alter- native: keep our sins and perish, or WASH THEM AWAY AND LIVE. But bays some one: "Why couldn't God have made more ways to heaven than one?" I do not know but lio could have'rnade half -a -dozen.- I know He made but one. You say:: "Why not have a tong line of boats running from here to heaven ?" 1 cannot say, bjit I simply know there is only one. You say: "/Are there not trees as luxuriant as that on Calvary ? more luxuriana., for that had 'neither buds nor •tnossoms; it . was stripped and barked 1" Yes, yes, there have been taller trees than that, and more luatiri-. ant ; but the only path to heaven Is under that one. Instead of quarrel- ling because -there aro not more ways, tet uti bo thankful to God that there is one—one name given unto men where- by we can be saved—one laver in which all the world ay wash. So you see what a radiant Gospel this is I prmach. 1 do not know bow a man eau stand stolidly and present it, for it ia such a radiant) Gospel. It is not a mere whim. or caprice; it is life or dentis—it is heaven or hell ! You come before your child and you. have a preseut in your hand: You put your hands behind your back, and say: "Which hand will you. take? In one hand there is a treasure, in the other there la not." The child blindly choos- es. -But God our Fattier does not do that way with us. Ile spreads out both hands, and says : "Now t his shall bo very. plain. In that hand are par- don, and peace, and life, and trea- sures of heaven ; in that hand are punishment, and sorrow, and woe. Choose ! Choose for yourselves I" "He that believeth, and is baptized shall be *aved; but he tha.t betieveth not shall be dammed."Oh, usy. • dear friends, I wish I could this 'morning coax .you to accept tltis Gospel11 you could Just take one look in this laver of looking -glasses spoken of in the text, you woutd begin now spiritual abiutione. The method in each ease.:is known, or, at all ' events, plausible explanations have been given by -Mr. Maskelyne and other experts., On one occasion Lord . Lytton liked stimething in the looks of the conjurer who was 'performing in the open apace before his homes. After Lae ordinary exhibition lis Lordship tusked the magicism if ,he ciottld not do something more out of -the-common way. The man said he would try, and sallied for a ring, which Lord Lytton getve hien.: He tken requested. an of - beer to take in either hand a handful of! tseeds—one sort was seaame. • The neme of the oilier sort. my informant did not know. Holding taese seeds, mad having the ring between his fin- ger and thumb, the officer was to go Lo. a well in the. corner of the com- pc:iund. He waa to dispose of the seeds in a certain \well, Into' the depths of which ho was to throw the ring.. All this was done, and Caen the maga ask- ed Lord Lytton where he would like the ring to reappear... He answered "iin his dispatcb box," of which the key was attached to h181 watch chain. or at all evente lie had it with him on the spot. • The dispatch box was brought out, Lord Lytton opened it and there was the ring. -This trick would be easy if the British officer wait a confederate of the juggler's, and if he possessed a duplize.te key to tae dispatch box. In that case he would not. throw the ring into the well, but wuulu take it into the house, °LAM the box and insert the ring. But. this ex- planation involves enormous improba- .bilities, while it. is unlikely again, that ; Lb° conjurer managed to insert a ' deiplioate ring int() the dispelch box I beforehand. Lord Lytton then asked tae juggler If he could repeat the trick He answered ea the affirmative, and a lady .lent another ring. Another of- : ficer took it, with the seeds, as before, ' and dropped the r ing into the well Tap countenance of the juggler alt - (lead in the telUtie which followed. - Something, he aaid, had gone -wrong, I end he welted agitated. Turning to the second officer he asked: "Did you : arrange the seeds as I bade you?" :''No," said tbe officer, "I thought that I Was all noneenee, and 1 threw them eway." The juggler seemed horri- .1 flied. "Do you think I do this by my - I Self 1" he aod, peeking up. he de - :parted. The well was carefully dragged, and ot. last the lady's row was brought to the surfacer. That rang„ at least, had oer,ai,n4 been in the water. But had the first riing been as faithfully neigned to the depths? Experts' be of various opinions as to that -4 yet the hypothesie of confederacy and of duplicate key to the diapatch box ill difficult.. 10* TO IDENTIFY HIM. .• . , "bitdsiobeyd Washeli4tielPedeita The minute of the British killed and stounded after a battle are amcertained try means of the tdentification cards which all our soldiers. carry sewn up ia the left band corner of their' khaki tunics.
