Wat8011, TELEPHONE 284-1767 Opinion More Debt Well, the Davis government has brought down its budget and there are quite a few happy people who will enjoy lower sales tax - 757, 1o5% ( and a S10kX) bonus to buy a house. The budget is designed to give incentive to purchasing a car and a home which will stimulate the critical areas of job layoffs. Almost all the extra jobless in the past year in OM- tarioare related to the house huilding or car industries. And we must admit that these items might do the trick and give more work to the two areas requiring stimulation. Homvever. citizens should note that there is a high price tag to this ho►nanza - its $1 billion to be borrowed from cash reserves and pension plans. 11 is pour opinion that people have enough money to buy new cars but are cautious about making a move in an economy which is very uncertain. Confidence would encourage car buying. In the home buying area. though, most new• home buyers Just don't have sufficient cash to get into a house, con- dominium rr other purchased property. The S1o00 will, no doubt. assist %orne purchasers who are on the verge of plunging into home ownership but it won't help the majority. However. this S100o incentive will have the effect of ac- celerating hoose prices, while at the same time the reduction in sales tax will tend to reduce a house cost slightly. It is nice to see the government promising to reduce the number of civil servants. but we have feeling that this move woin't really cut costs much. But government must sel an example and economize wherever possible - and at Queen's I'ar•k t here are lots of places to explore. The budget certainly appears to be the forerunner for an election with "goodies" being announced steadily for days. The political success of the Davis government in the future.
