Pickering Township has been kept down to just 100 residential building

GO Transit
SPEECH DELIVERED BY WILLIAM NEWMAN,
MPP (ONTARIO SOUTH) TO THE
LEGISLATURE ON RESOLUTION x#11 DEC. 13th
Mr. Speaker. while my remarks on the Hon-
ourable member's resolution are insupport of
that resolution, I wish to speak on the expansion
of GO Transit to an area other than the north.
In that respect, Mr. Speaker. I wish to confine
me remarks to the eastern corridor of the GO
Transit system..... and particularly concentrate
on the very extreme portion of that corridor.
It is interesting to note, Mr. Speaker, that
total figures for the GO Transit system show
that 8.000 people, on the average, use the system
to travel into Toronto each working day. How-
ever, what is more interesting is that more
than 1,000 of these people use the Pickering
Station..ln other words, one ofevery eight
persons using the GO Transit originate at the
Pickering Station.
What is even more interesting is that this fig-
ure is increasing. For example, there has been
an increase of 41 per cent in the number of
persons using Pickering Station this past Oct-
ober as compared to October 1967.
In fact, both Pickering and nearby Rouge Hill
have increased their patronage by over 40 per
cent during the twelve months from October 1967
to October 1968.
And thisis indeed a remarkable increase. for
the overall system increase --that is the increase
for the entire GO Transit system --has barely
managed to reach the 15 per cent mark for
that very same period.
There are no up-to-date figures available for
the number of Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa resi-
dents who travel to Pickering to use GO Transit
However, a survey carried out during a one-
week period in 1967 showed that of 440 people
who exited at Pickering, 50 lived in Ajax, 30
In Whitby and another 50 in Oshawa.
It is logical to deduct that the 40 per cent
increase over the past year would add to those
totals to make 70 from Ajax, 42 from Whitby
and at least 70 from Oshawa.
It is also reasonable to assume, mr. Speaker,
that if the GO Transit system was to be exten-
ded to whitby that the number of persons using
the GO Transit would increase considerably
if not double, because of the convenience and
the economy factors alone.
It is for these reasons, Mr. Speaker, that I
urge this Government to extend the services
into Ajax and Whitby and further. After all,
what better way to extend services than in the
direction which shows a great need, and one which
has proven successful.

He's Opposed To Pickering Kruger
Airport by Councillor John Kru9
Dear Sir:
For the past several weeks we have been read-
ing in our newspapers of the tremendous oppos-
ition from residents of the surrounding comm-
unities to the proposed enlargenment of Toronto
International Airport.
Residents of Etobicoke, Mississauga, Brampton
and other Peel County communities have been
holding dozens of crowded meetings to register
their protests, and have evensent a delegation
to Ottawa, and one to Queen's Park, to express
their opposition to this project.
These people oppose enlargement of the exist-
ing airport because they are already only too
familiar with the tremendous noise and nuisance
created by the big jets landing and taking off at
Toronto Airport. Many residents living miles
from the airport, but one one of theflight paths,
claim that they cannot get a night's sleep be-
cause of the roar of the jets. They fear that
enlarging this airport, together with the in-
creased air traffic expected and the advent soon
of the new "Jumbo Jets" willmake their lives
altogether intolerable.
Much of the great residential build-up in the
areas affected by Toronto International Airport
has occurred since the airport was built. Pre-
sumably then, most of the residents now in those
areas did have theopportunity tolearn what they
were getting themselves into before they moved
there.
Now we in the area east of Metro Toronto have
last week's press release from Ontario Riding
M.P. Norm Cafik, in which he says that he has
suggested to the Federal Minister of Transport
Mr. Hellyer, that instead of enlarging Toronto
International, a new airport be built in Ontario
Riding. He goes on to say that he thinks such
an airport "would be a great boon to the area".
Misery indeed loves company. Evidently our
Liberal M.P. feels that he can make a contri-
bution to his constituency by suggesting that
the misery surrounding Toronto International
Airport be divided up so that we may enjoy
our share of it. Thus also helpingMr. Hellyer
out of the corner he is backed into.
With the evidence right before us in the daily
reports of the controversy surrounding the
proposed enlargement of Toronto Airport, I
hope the residents of our area are not going to
be taken in by this suggestion of Mr. Cafik's,
under the guise of so-called "progress".
Announcement is expected from Ottawa of the
final decision regarding Toronto's airport pro-
blem within the next few days --probably by the
time you receive this letter. If theytry to palm
off an airport scheme in this area, I hope other
citizens will join me in flatly opposing it.
Yours very truly,
C.T. Muirhead,
R.R. 1 Claremont
Ontario.

Christmas Messages For You
"TUNE IN AND TURN ON" THIS CHRISTMAS
Some years ago, a Christmas pageant was
presented by a professional cast in a London
theatre.
Because this was a commercial enterprise,
the censors were quite harsh in their treatment
of the production. They would not permit the
actress who played the role of the Virgin Mary
to utter a line and they would not permit any
image of the Christ child to appear in the play.
So, instead of having a doll or a real baby in
the manger, a light bulb was used, to show the
radiance of the new-born babe.
At one point in the play all the lights were
turned off except for the light in the manger. The
results were quite impressive.
During one performance however, a technician
backstage made the mistake of turning out all
of the lights including the one in the manger.
When this happened, a frantic whisper could be
heard onstage, "Hey, you've turned off the Christ
child."
With all of the busy-ness of the holida y season
there is always the danger that the Christ child
will be turned off for us so that the light of
His indwelling Spirit no longer shines in our
lives.
Our ears get so used to the din of carols that
we tune them out and the meaning of the words
are lost. If we find this happening to us, let's
stop for a moment so tha t the joy and peace
of the Holy -day can cath
of the Holy -day can catch up with us.
Let's tune in to Christ and let Hum turn on the
light within us for He Is the true Light who gives
light to everyone in the world.

The wondrous story again is told
The tale so new and yet so old.
Of faithful Joseph and shepherds near
Of Mary fair and Child so dear!
In many lands men's hearts are numbed and
chilled with war and the dread of war so that
only by a conscious effort can they react to
the excitement of the eternal truth of Christmas.
Only love can save the world - and yet think
how many armed conflicts are being waged right
now; the Viet Nam war the Israeli -Arab con-
flict, the tehsion within India and Pakistan, the
gorilla warfare in Nigeria, Laos, Colombia,
Bolivia, Greece and Turkey. No wonder then
that the very core of our being must be ex-
posed and directed to a world Saviour, the
eternal Son of a Providential Father who is
sent as personal Redeemer for each one of us.
In our own generation, above the din and clamour
of violence must be heard "the voice of one
crying in the wilderness" - make straight the
way of the Lord. This voice must -e heard
internally so that the inner conversion of men
will inspire an alleviatic of suffering, a thirst
for justice, and a pursuit of righteousness
that befits man's dignity and destiny.
And this brings us to our knees, to the Light
of the world and to the Prince of Peace.
May His Christmas grace make our lives
more meaningful in His sight. And a Blessed
Christmas to all.

Maybe it is the
Christmas spirit that
Is getting into the
bowlers that caused
the scores to be some-
what lower than usual.
There were a few
good single games but
good triples were far
and few between.
Highest three game
set was Cyril Hann's
755, with a top single
of 301. The social se-
cretary got into the
spirit of the holiday
season by hitting a 314
single game and a 743
triple. Tillie Gillis
rolled a 744 triple with
Peter Milne a 305
single (738 triple), and
Ken Hunt a 727 triple.
No one else could get
over a 725 triple.
Some of the gang will

WEST ROUGE NEWS by Kay Brooks
HOCKEY
Give the boys a boost! Help to send our Pee
Wees All-Star team to Quebec in February.
How? Buy your Christmas supply of softdrinks
from them. Just $2.50 a case, and that includes
delivery to your door. Call any member of the
West Rouge Hockey Assn. The boys are also
selling tins of mixed nuts at reasonable prices.
Nice to have around the house during the holiday
season, these also make delightful last minute
gifts.
CURLING
For the girls who curl, Fri. Dec. 6th was a
real fun day. One of the West Rouge teams,
composed of Iri s Farley, Rose Fleming, Shirley
Samis and Dale Wright. took part in the "Santa
Bonspiel", held at the Tam O'Shanter Club.
They curled most of the day and later enjoyed
a delicious dinner. How they scored is a secret
and we promised we wouldn't say. It's not
whether you win or not, but how you play the
;game --they keep tell ing themselves. Betterluck
neat year girls!
FOOTBALL
Approximately 45 boys who played football this
year, along with their coaches. enjoyed a Bun

for these lads who tried hard but were not quite
strong enough to win against stiff competition.
They are determined to do better next year, and
try to bring another trophy or two into West
Rouge territory. In the meantime most of them
are now concentrating on hockey.
TRAVELLERS
Rose and Bill Fleming spent a delightful week-
end in Washington D.C., part business and part
pleasure. While there they were surprised to
see former President and Mrs. L. B. Johnson
leaving a church service.
HAPPY DAYS
Celebrating birthdays during the holiday season
are Tara MacKay and Cathy Smith, both on Dec.
27th and Bob Maclntyre, Sr., on Dec. 28th. Best
wishes to all!
Congratulations and many more happy years
to Val and Ron McIntyre, whose anniversary
is Dec. 30th.

Sorry to hear jovial Bob Ewing is confined to

he will make a quick and complete recovery
before the holidaysr
SUPPERS
Pot luck Suppers have become a very popular
form of gathering. Enjoying this type of party
recently were members of the United Church
Women of Centennial United Church on Dec. 3rd.
The West Rouge Ladies Club met at the home of
Mrs. Lorraine Pavlis on Dec. 12th, and the Grace
Church Couples Club held their Pot Luck Supper
on Dec. 13th. A good time was had by all.
PARTY TIME
Christmas parties will be held at Grace Pres-
byterian Church on Tues. Dec 17th for members
of the Kindergarten and Junior Sunday School
classes; and on Fri. Dec. 20th for those in the
Senior Division. The C.G.I.T. will take part in
a Vesper Service on Wed. Dec. 18th.
Thurs. Dec. 19th is the date for the special
Christmas Program planned by the West Rouge
Cub Packs. This takes place at Wm. G. Davis
School. A small fee will be charged and will
include refreshments.

WHA HOPPEN?
Were there a few red faces on Fri. Dec. 13th
over the "Do " that didn't? And did anyone
track down the culprit? Or was it a joint effort
with some of the joints out of place? Seems like
half of West Rouge played "Twenty Questions"
last week -end.
CHRISTMAS GREETINGS
Most of the time this column is a pleasure
to write, but there have been occasions when
It was a bit difficult to find sufficient news items,
and therefore something of an effort. However
the assistance and Encouragement received from
good friends and neighbours has made it all
worthwhile.
Would like to wish all readers of the column
a Very Merry Christmas and Good Health and
Happiness in the New Year.

HOUSE OF COMMONS
CANADA
by Norman Cafik, M.P.
The big news this week in the House of Commons
is the Debate on the Report from the Standing
Committee on the Procedures of the House of
Commons --in other words, the Debate in re-
spect to Parliamentary Reform.
The first day the leaders of the parties pre-
sented their views on this Report and I found
it most interesting and informative. This view
was shared by most others in the House of
Commons. The Debate is of a higher calibre
than any other Debate so far in the 28th Parlia-
ment.
Generally speaking, all parties appear to be in
favour of major Parliamentary reforms. How-
ever, there are certain points of disagreement,
the main one being Standing Order 16A, which
is concerned with the establishing of a "Pro-
ceedings Committee" to program the order and
time limits on matters to come before the House
of Commons.
The Government's position is quite simple: that
If Parliament is to deal with the massive legis-
lation required then it must have control to some
extent on the matters coming before the House
and the allotment of time for each Debate.
Prior to the Debate itself, some of the oppos-
ition indicated that they would filibuster the
Debate until the Government enforced closure.
However, in the Debate itself, I have yet to hear
any opposition member indicate that this is
their policy.
The Governmenton theother hand, indicated
that they wouldlike thepassing of this Bill in
the usual manner without the necessity of re-
sorting to closure.
In my personal view, the Government is deter -
m ined to push forward with this reform, and I
feel that it is in the best interest of Parliament
and the Canadian people that we do so.
However, I feel that there is room for com-
promise within 16A that could be made to the
opposition without jeopardizing the intent of the
legislation.
I have not yet decided whether I will personally
participate in the Debate itself, and will make
that decision within the next few days.
l
For you and yours . . . radiant happiness,

throne of Christ, the King.

SQUARE DANCE NEWS
by Mollie Elliot
There will be merry
Christmas bells, as
well as belles, at
square dance parties
all over Ontario, and
indeed, all over the
world, this year, as
modern Canadian
square dancing
spreads. In Japan
and Australia, in Ger-
a any and England,
Hawaii and Alaska,
people will join hands
;and move feet to the
same tunes and calls
that make dancers
happy here.
One of our favourite
stories is about Bob
and Nita Page and a
group of dancers from
the U. S. and Canada
who went on tour to the
Orient this year. Bob
took a tape recorder
and brought back some
interesting sounds,
which, together with
pictures, made a real
story!
Probably the most in-
teresting event was the
square dance in Tokyo
where they danced
with many Japanese,
including a Prince of
the Emperor's house-
hold. We heard tapes
of calls, given in ex-
cellent English by Jap-
anese callers from the
All -Japan S/D Callers
Association. The re-
markable thing was
that these callers
couldn't speak a word
of English, nor could
their dancers, but
they danced in perfect
time to: 'Grand right
and left", "Clover-
leaf"; "Swing thru and
circulate".
Many times we hear
that music and dancing
are international and
know no language
barriers,and here was
a demonstration so ex-
citing that, even on
tapes, one could catch
the significance of this

In its infancy in Japan,
they have a national
organization; Canada
Is just now thinking of a
National Association
to keep dancers and
callers in touch across
our great country.
Let's get on with it!
Another Christmas
story was told to me
by a new square dance
couple from Agin-
court. They said:
"For the first time,
we really enjoyed our
office Christmas
party" "Did you
square dance?" we
asked. "No, but we
always just sat be-
cause neither of us felt
we could get up and
dance, but this year,
when they put on a
waltz, we danced the
basic steps welearned
at the S/D Club.
Everybody thought we
had taken ballroom
lessons, and we were
quite proud of our-
selves!"
