Emerald Ash Borer
could cost local nursery
hundreds of thousands
By Reka Szekely
rszekely@durhamregion.com
PICKERING — A beetle that threatens mil-
lions of North American ash trees has been
found in Pickering.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency re-
cently confirmed the first Emerald Ash Borer
(EAB) infestation in Durham. The affected
trees are located in the Finch Avenue and Liv-
erpool Road area on a residential street. It was
discovered by a municipal arbourist.
The beetles are native to Asia and were
likely first introduced to North America in the
1990s.
Once they infest an ash tree, their larvae
feed under the bark, creating little tunnels
which disrupt the transport of nutrients and
water in the tree, killing it in as little as two
years.
The first infestation was discovered in the
Windsor and Detroit area in 2002 and the EAB
has since been found in other states in the
U.S., parts of Southwestern Ontario, including
the London area, and Toronto.
Windsor arbourists report a 95-per-cent
mortality rate among affected trees, said Brian
Hamilton, EAB project specialist for the Cana-
dian Food Inspection Agency.
“We’re pretty confident it’s an efficient tree-
killing insect,” he said.
Most recently, infestations have been re-
ported in other areas of the GTA, including
Vaughan, and outside of Montreal. The CFIA
is still assessing the situation in Durham.
“We don’t know how it got there, it could
have just moved on its own or more likely it’s
firewood.”
Naturally, the bugs would only spread a few
kilometres each year, leading experts to be-

lieve it’s being brought to new areas in wood
materials, including firewood.
Mr. Hamilton said the CFIA is looking at
restrictions for recently infested areas, includ-
ing banning the movement of ash trees and
products and all firewood outside of the area.
It’s yet to be decided how large an area the
restriction will cover, but it could be all of Dur-
ham and York.
This will likely cost at least one local nurs-
ery hundreds of thousands of dollars.
“Well, it’s kind of devastating as far as that
species of tree goes,” said Mike Tillaart, owner
of Pickering-based Dutchmaster Nurseries.
“I guess in the back of our minds we knew it
would eventually end up over here.”
Dutchmaster Nurseries also owns sites in
Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington.
Five years ago, ash was one of the nursery’s
top sellers. But as the EAB has spread, they’ve
been receiving fewer orders. Still, the com-
pany had planned to sell 5,000 to 6,000 this
year, with each tree priced from $80 to $300 or
$400.
Nurseries plant trees four to seven years
before they’re ready to be sold.
“You plant these trees years in advance,
speculating a little on the market,” said Mr.
Tillaart.
For now, the company is waiting to see
what the directives the CFIA will impose.
One of the ironies of the situation is that
ash are one of the heartiest varieties of trees
available and will be tough to replace said Mr.
Tillaart.
They currently represent between 15 and
30 per cent of the urban forest.

Don’t Move Firewood
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency
(CFIA) is asking the public to help stop the
spread of destructive pests such as the
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) which has killed
millions of ash trees in Canada.
Simply, the public is asked not to move
firewood from one area to another. Buy it
and burn it locally and never bring it back
home, the CFIA advises.
The organization says the destruction
of forests by pests can have wide-reach-
ing effects, including people in the lumber
industry losing their jobs and animals losing
their habitats. More information is avail-
able at the CFIA’s website, www.inspection.

Murder conspiracy
case to jury soon
By Jeff Mitchell
jmitchell@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — The Crown’s
case against two Hells Angels
accused of plotting to kill a
rival doesn’t pass the common
sense test, a defence lawyer
has told jurors.
“The Crown has presented
you with a case that makes no
sense,” Glen Orr said in making
final submissions to a Superior
Court jury Tuesday. “They are
asking you to apply common
sense to a case that makes no
sense.”
Mr. Orr represents Remond
Akleh, who along with Mark
Stephenson has pleaded not
guilty to charges of conspiring
to commit murder and coun-
selling to commit murder. The
Crown alleges Mr. Stephenson,
president of the Oshawa chap-
ter of the Hells Angels, and Mr.
Akleh, a member of the club’s
Nomads wing, enlisted a fel-
low Angel to kill Frank Lenti,
a biker with ties to the rival
Bandidos gang.
The key Crown witness
against the accused men in this
trial is Steven Gault, a police
agent who infiltrated the Hells
Angels to gather evidence of
drug trafficking. Mr. Gault tes-
tified Mr. Stephenson and Mr.
Akleh recruited him in June
2006 to assassinate Mr. Lenti.
The alleged plot was never
acted upon.
During the trial, which
began in October, the defence
has striven to discredit Mr.
Gault, who has a lengthy his-
tory of crimes of violence and
dishonesty, and to assail the
Crown’s theory that Mr. Akleh
and Mr. Stephenson entrusted
him with killing Mr. Lenti.
The jury has heard at length
how Mr. Akleh had a chilly re-
lationship with Mr. Stephen-
son and about his outright en-
mity with Mr. Gault. Mr. Akleh
ran afoul of Mr. Gault -- and
the Oshawa Hells Angels --
several years ago by airing his
suspicions that Mr. Gault was
a police informant, the jury
heard. Mr. Akleh testified at
trial his allegations resulted in
confrontations with Mr. Gault
and other bikers. The resulting
tension led him to feel so un-
safe he left the Oshawa Angels
charter for the Nomads, based
in Ottawa and moved his fam-
ily away from Durham Region.
Mr. Orr said Tuesday it de-
fies logic that Mr. Akleh would
enter into a murder plot with
a man he believed to be a
snitch.
“Who but an idiot -- who
but a moron -- would recruit
or hire a man that he believed
to be a police informant to kill
another man?” Mr. Orr asked.
Mr. Orr said the Crown had
established no motive for Mr.
Akleh to want Mr. Lenti dead;
indeed, he said, evidence
shows Mr. Akleh twice voted
to have Mr. Lenti accepted as
a Hells Angel. And he urged
jurors to reject the Crown’s as-
sertion Mr. Akleh went along
with the plot for the good of the
club.
“He’s not a company man,”
Mr. Orr said. “He’s not a man
who would kill for the club.”
Mr. Orr and Brian Grys, coun-
sel for Mr. Stephenson, also
spent much time in their sum-
mations targeting Mr. Gault,
whom they depicted as a ca-
reer grifter and liar who would
be willing to frame the men on
trial to increase the amount
of money he made as a po-
lice agent. Mr. Gault was paid
in excess of $1 million for the
project that saw Mr. Akleh, Mr.
Stephenson, and several other
bikers busted in the fall of 2006,
jurors heard.
Today, Justice Bruce Glass
was to deliver his charge to
the jury, after which the panel
will be sequestered until they
reach a verdict.

Earth Day marks
pay or switch date at
Loblaw stores
By Stefanie Swinson
sswinson@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — The days are num-
bered for free plastic shopping bags
at Durham Region’s largest grocery
chain.
Beginning April 22 it will cost
five cents for each plastic grocery
bag when you check out at Loblaw
stores.
The company wants customers
to choose reuseable bags instead.
“Our goal is to divert one billion
plastic bags from landfills in 2009,”
said Inge van den Berg, vice-presi-
dent of public relations and inves-
tor relations for Loblaw.
But Sobey’s, a leading competi-
tor, is leaving it up to shoppers to
decide whether to switch without
charging a bag fee.
“We have been selling reuse-
able bags at the checkouts of all
our Sobey’s stores for the past
two years,” said Tracy Chisholm,
Sobey’s director of communica-
tions.
The grocer charges 99 cents for
the “green bag for life” which is
replaced free of charge if it breaks.
“Some people just like using
plastic bags,” Ms. Chisholm said.
For those customers Sobey’s has a
plastic grocery bag recycling pro-
gram.
“Price Choppers (owned by
Sobey’s) will be our only store with
the plastic bag charge,” she said.
Metro -- which owns A&P -- will
begin to charge for plastic grocery
bags come June, but it won’t affect
shoppers in Durham Region.
“We will be implementing the
five-cent charge in all of our Toron-
to stores, but we’re still evaluating
the situation to decide if we’ll bring
the program outside of the city,”
said Selena Fiacco, Metro’s director
of communications.
The Quebec-based grocer was
one of the first companies to offer
reusable bags.
But Ms. van den Berg at Loblaw
said re-useable bags are just one
green alternative.
“Let’s say you forget your green
bag. For a $4.99 deposit you can
bring your groceries home in a
green bin.”
The bins will be available at every
Loblaw store and you can choose
to keep the basket or you can bring
it back on your next visit and you
will get your deposit refunded.
And if you’re one of those shop-
pers who always seems to forget
their reuseable bags, Loblaw will
have “green greeters at the front
entrance of each store to remind
people to bring their bags.
If you still choose to buy plastic
bags, you may get more use out of
them.
Some of the money from the five
cent charge has gone into rede-
signing the plastic shopping bags.
Each Loblaw plastic grocery bag
will be 35 per cent bigger and 25
per cent thicker.
“It will be able to hold a third
more groceries,” said Ms. van den
Berg. “And because it’s a tougher
bag, you can reuse it easier ... about
four or five times.”
The City of Toronto became the
company’s pilot for the new pro-
gram on Jan. 12.
“We don’t know how the system
will be adopted,” said Ms. van den
Berg. “That’s why we’re testing it
out in Toronto first before we go
nationwide.”
The majority of the proceeds
from the sale of plastic shopping
bags will be used to cover the cost
of the Loblaw plastic bag reduction
program and the rest will be do-
nated to environmental charities
and groups like the World Wildlife
Fund of Canada.

“II was working in my
trade the day after grad-
uation, and am looking
forward to a great SECOND
CAREER in plumbing, thanks to
the Youth Apprenticeship Stan-
dards Council and the Pre-Ap-
prenticeship Training Institute.”
Radcliffe Dixon, Plumbing Pre-
Apprenticeship graduate, sum-
mer 2008.
Established in
June 2008, the
Youth Apprentice-
ship Standards
Council (YASC)
came onto the
scene just as the
Ontario govern-
ment launched its
SECOND CA-
REERS program.
YASC is a non-
pro t organiza-
tion established to
provide access to
skilled trades and safety training
and to link member employees
with potential employers. For
those with no experience in the
trades, individuals receive tools,
safety equipment, safety training
and hands on training through
YASC’s only approved training
facility – Pre-Apprenticeship
Training Institute (PAT). PAT
currently trains people in Electri-
cal, Plumbing, HVAC, Network
Cabling and Small Appliance
Repair and graduates meeting the
YASC standards will be linked
with employers in the industry
including contractors, distribut-
ers and manufacturers. This state
of the art training facility has
quickly become the industry stan-
dard for skilled trades training,
with PAT graduates being sought
after by big and small companies
in the GTA. Together the Youth
Apprenticeship Standards Coun-
cil and PAT have set the standard
for entry level workers into the
skilled trades and have become
recognized by the industry as the
place to hire from and the place
to train!
Historically, apprenticeships
were secured by obtaining em-
ployment with a company and by
apprenticing with a journeyman.
More then ever before employ-
ers are hiring people with strong
foundational skills that can be
obtained through a recognized
pre-apprenticeship program.
The Industry Standard
What does the industry have to
say about Youth Apprenticeship
Standards Council
and its approved
training facility?
With 35% to 50%
of skilled trades
people set to re-
tire over the next
10 years, most
employers feel
the Youth Appren-
ticeship Standards
Council and PAT
are long overdue.
The Pre-Appren-
ticeship Training
Institute was founded in 2005,
because there was a desperate
need for skilled people in the in-
dustry and no one was providing
the solution for employers. As
Rui Cunha, the facility’s direc-
tor of operations was quoted as
saying in the industry’s Network
Cabling magazine (Anthony
Capkun, Jan/Feb 2008) “We
don’t function
like a tradition-
al school,” he
added, “We’re
more like the
employer’s Hu-
man Resource
and Training
Department.”
Cunha went
on to say that
employers who
hire from PAT
see the Institute
as a partner,
helping them
grow their busi-
nesses with good people.
The response to PAT and now
YASC has been outstanding.
Their industry partners include
companies like Bell Technical
Solutions, O’Neil Electric, and
Hubbell (whose support of PAT
has included donations of mate-
rials for their Network Cabling
Specialist program and product
demonstrations by Hubbell’s
Yves Thibodeau). Manufactur-
ers such as DeWalt, Napoleon
and Moen proudly sponsor tools
and materials and are looking
forward to being scholarship
sponsors with YASC in the near
future.
Industry associations have also
become strong supporters. The
PAT Institute is a
proud member of
the Ontario Electri-
cal League (OEL)
and has gained the
League’s full sup-
port and as quoted in
their industry maga-
zine, The Dialogue
in August 2008
“stands behind the
training and recruit-
ment efforts of this
Institute and en-
courages members
to consider PAT Institute pre-
apprentice graduates for employ-
ment.” The electrical industry
represents a large percentage of
employers who now hire exclu-
sively through the Youth Ap-
prenticeship Standards Council
and PAT. John
Greco, the pres-
ident of a large
electrical com-
pany in Toronto
was quoted
as saying “To
date, our com-
pany has 12
(PAT Institute)
former stu-
dents working
full-time….we
have found that
the apprentices
that graduate
from the Pre-
Apprenticeship Institute program
t into the real work environ-
ment easily and are productive
from day one. We look forward
to accepting Pre-Apprenticeship
Training Institute graduates in
the future.”
Over 300 employers are al-
ready experiencing the many
bene ts of hiring PAT Institute
pre-apprentice graduates. The
Institute and their partner YASC
work with both union and non-
union employers – with both
groups nding great value and
bene ts from the services offered
through the Institute and Council.
Unions like the Christian Labour
Association of Canada (CLAC)
recommend the PAT Institute as
the preferred recruitment and
training facility for their contrac-
tors and have been quoted (Dia-
logue – August 2008) as saying,
“We have been impressed with
the Institute’s quality training
and dedication to promoting the
skilled trades….They have built
an impressive training program
where participants receive their
training in a hands-on, practi-
cal manner. Their large training
centre allows for participants to
put into practice everything they
have learned. Further, we ap-
preciate the integrated role that
safety plays in all aspects of their
curriculum.”
In this province where thousands
of jobs have been lost in the last
year, many individuals are taking
advantage of the government’s
SECOND CAREERS program
and looking to YASC for their
link to both training (through
PAT) and employers/contrac-
tors. Radcliffe Dixon, a former
employee of Johnson Controls (a
Tier 2 supplier to the automotive
industry, and GM in particular)
was one such individual. Upon
receiving notice that he was to be
laid off, Radcliffe starting look-
ing into options and came across
the Youth Apprenticeship Stan-
dards Council. “It was a perfect
t for me! YASC’s approved
training facility – PAT, offered a
three month training program in
plumbing – a trade I was always
interested in. They (PAT) pro-
vided me with my tools, safety
equipment, safety training and
all the materials I needed to learn
as much as I could in
those three months
to really be produc-
tive when I went out
to work.” Radcliffe
also commented that
the fact that PAT and
YASC had the reputa-
tion of being the place
“where industry hires”
really appealed to him.
“Pre-Apprenticeship is
the only training facil-
ity approved by YASC
and it was through them
that I landed my rst plumbing
job with a prominent plumbing
contractor. I am now out work-
ing in the trade, earning a living
and well on my way to becom-
ing a licensed plumber. With the
professional
way Youth
Apprentice-
ship Stan-
dards Council
promotes PAT
graduates and
the training
I received at
PAT, it’s no
wonder con-
tractors are
hiring exclu-
sively from
these organi-
zations.” Rad-
cliffe gradu-
ated at the end
of August and
has been working steady with a
commercial plumbing company
that works all over the GTA.
Dwight Matthews is another
graduate who tells a similar sto-
ry. “I was working for a large na-
tional company with little room
to grow. I decided it was time to
look for a second career and after
looking around at different ca-
reer paths and training facilities;
I picked the PAT Institute and
their electrical program because
of its recognition in the industry
as the standard for the industry.
After three months of intensive
hands on training my company
hired me the day I graduated.
I had no need to look for a job
because this is where employers
in the industry come to hire. My
entire class graduated on Friday
and was working on Monday.
That was two years ago! Today I
have bought a house and I’m cur-
rently the union steward for my
company.”
Second Careers – A New
Beginning
More than just training, the Youth
Apprenticeship Standards Coun-
cil and the Pre-Apprenticeship
Training Institute are offering
individuals, such as those hard
hit by the automotive industry
lay-offs a chance at a “second
career”. With the average age of
students ranging between 22 and
40, they are now enrolling more
and more mature students….
anxious to be working and real-
izing that the trades are a stable
and secure
career option,
a career that
will be less
impacted by
the economic
climate than
other sectors.
With an
ever grow-
ing number
of employers
hiring through
YASC, all stu-
dents achiev-
ing the stan-
dard of 75% in
their trade and
employabil-
ity skills are promoted by YASC
to member employers and nd
work. As well, YASC provides
job links for experienced appren-
tices and licensed trades people.
This is the place where industry
hires and where opportunities for

A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, January 15, 2009 durhamregion.com
I love my children dearly, but I’ve come
to realize that living with a teenager is
like living with one of the undead. It’s
true. The parallels are frightening. Like
all zombies they seem to have an acute
aversion to daylight, often staying in bed
until well into the afternoon when the
sun is safely past its zenith. If you don’t
believe me, walk into your teenager’s
room while he or she is in bed and fling
the curtains open. That sun is like muriatic
acid to them. Their purple ringed eyes will
grimace in agony as they dart their pale,
bloodless faces, turtle-like back into the
dank, soothing darkness of covers.
When eventually they do rise from the
crypt, they are, like all zombies, insatiably
hungry. They shuffle past the living, ignor-
ing our cheerful, if sarcastic, “Good after-
noons!” salivating mouths agape, cadaver-
ous arms stretched, pointing to the fridge.
At once they will begin to gorge on their
favourite zombie foods: leftover pizza,
milk, cookies, any kind of animal flesh.
Another trait that teens share with the
undead is that neither has any use for a
beverage container beyond the original
milk jug or juice carton. The concept of
glasses or cups is completely foreign to
them. On the upside, my wife has acciden-
tally hit on a wonderful way to keep teen
zombies out of the kitchen or to at least
make their stay there as short as possible.
She places large bowls of fresh fruit and
containers of vitamins on the table. This
is like garlic or a crucifix to these creatures
and has the marvellous effect of sending
them to the nearest video game console.
Once sated with food, teen zombies are
at their most amenable but must still be
approached with the utmost caution. They
are unpredictable creatures at the best of
times and have been known to snap and
bite heads off at the slightest provocation.
Communication may be attempted at this
point but it is wise to keep things simple,
non-confrontational and preferably mono-
syllabic. I have had good success with
“Hello,” “Nice day” and “Here’s a twenty.”
Money, especially in denominations of
tens or greater, seems to greatly appease
the teen zombie. I actually have rare video
footage of one of my children muttering
“Thank you” after one such exchange. The
picture is grainy and lasts only a moment
before going black as my wife passed out
after hearing those words.
Phrases to be avoided at all costs are:
“Do you have any homework?”
“Have you cleaned your room?”
“Can I have a hug?”
Careless use of any of the above may
send the teen zombie into a hormonally-
induced rage resulting in tears, incompre-
hensible whining and almost acrobatic
sulking.
Another trait teens share with the
undead is that they seem to be impervious
to or completely unconscious of inclem-
ent weather. Witness the hordes of them
clumping about, pizza slices in hand, hat-
less, coatless and bootless in conditions
that would ground air traffic. And yet they
never get sick. Remarkable.
Like all zombies, our teens can be fright-
ening, exasperating and very tiresome.
There are times when we are tempted to
board up the windows and keep them and
their zombie friends out of our homes. But,
just like in the movies, we must remem-
ber that inside that zombie, a prisoner of
pubescence, is our kid. And if we hang in
there long enough, the body will heal itself
and that child that we love so much, will
return.
Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-
writer, saves some of his best lines for his col-
umns.
Plastic bag fee will help to change grocery store behaviour
I f you’re eager to change consumer
behaviour there is usually no better
way to do that than through the pock-
etbook.
That’s why the decision by Loblaw to
charge five cents per plastic grocery bag
should help push shoppers away from
plastic and towards reusable contain-
ers and cloth bags. And that’s ultimately
good for the environment.
The move has already happened in
Toronto and will branch out to Durham
and other parts of Ontario and Canada
on April 22, Earth Day. A portion of the
five-cent fee will go toward environmen-
tal charities and groups like the World
Wildlife Fund of Canada.
Of course, Loblaw isn’t the first grocery
store to charge a fee for plastic grocery
bags. Price Chopper and Food Basics, for
instance, have been charging a per-bag
fee for years. So has No Frills.
So Loblaw isn’t necessarily breaking
new ground with its decision to charge
a fee. But it is joining a trend and elimi-
nating an option for shoppers looking
for stores that offer free plastic bags. The
message is clear: fewer and fewer super-
markets in future will let you have the
option of having free plastic bags with
your groceries.
With reusable bags often encouraged
for a cheap price at stores -- usually 99
cents per bag -- shoppers are encouraged
to pick up several bags and use them over
and over and over again. It’s good for
the environment, sets a fine example for
children, means less is spent on plastic
grocery bags and keeps our landfills free
of waste.
In the end, saving landfills or, eventu-
ally, incinerator space, is the key.
We have to find ways of cutting down
the amount of waste we create and every
little bit helps. Every time a Durham
shopper forgoes a plastic grocery bag in
favour of a reusable container or cloth
bag, that contributes to the cause. Mul-
tiply that by thousands and thousands
of bags over years and years and you can
see how it can all add up.
Like recycling bottles and cans, using
reusable bags helps our quality of life and
makes our community a better place for
all of us to live. We can help out by doing
our part.

Time for Jim Flaherty to
get on with the job
To the editor:
It’s high time Jim Flaherty get on with
what he is being paid to perform or move
on and get out of politics.
I am not impressed with his track
record so far.
In my opinion, he has put himself and
the present government in a most ridicu-
lous and embarrassing situation and as
the end result have left the people hold-
ing the bag.
Savings have dwindled on our invest-
ments and the monies that were in
reserve are being depleted quickly.
On the same note, Canadians have
no more desire to have our troops in
Afghanistan. It’s time to reassess and
attempt to get better results.

Trenton Hercs’ demise
means Pickering’s in
the post-season dance
By Al Rivett
arivett@durhamregion.com
PICKERING — In a twist of fate,
the Pickering Panthers are now get-
ting ready for the post-season and, to
that end, they succeeded with their
play this past weekend.
The club earned a split of On-
tario Junior Hockey League contests,
starting with a strong effort against
the Peterborough Liftlock Stars that
nonetheless yielded a 6-4 loss at the
Pickering Recreation Complex on
Friday.
On Saturday night in Mississauga,
the Panthers -- not known as an of-
fensive juggernaut -- filled the net
against the Chargers, but still per-
severed for a 9-8 overtime victory.
Eammon Courtney was the hero for
the Panthers, netting the game win-
ner just 47 seconds into the extra
five-minute frame. Jeff Broekema
earned an assist.
While Panthers’ head coach Bill
Brady was glad to see his players
score goals by the bucketful, he was
somewhat disappointed that it came
down to the last shot to win it in
overtime.
“It was good to see that we can do
that (offensively),” Brady said. “It’s
unfortunate that we couldn’t enjoy
the luxury of scoring that many goals
in a tight hockey game.”
Although it was far from a defen-
sive gem for the Panthers, Brady said
Saturday’s shinny-type affair was the
exception rather than the rule for the
club of late.
“Since the new year, I thought
we’ve played extremely well defen-
sively. But, for whatever reason, it
got away from us (on Saturday) and
we got into a battle. We couldn’t shut
them down, but they couldn’t shut
us down either.”
At home against Peterborough,
the Panthers scored four times in the
third period, but came up short in
a game they played well enough to
win, Brady said.
“We dominated for most of the
game, especially in the second peri-
od, but we still came out of it down,”
he said.
The post-season came about for
the last-place Panthers by virtue of
the Trenton Hercs ceasing opera-
tions for the remainder of the OHA
Ontario Junior Hockey League sea-
son. So, the Panthers are the benefi-
ciary of the eighth and final post-sea-
son berth in the Ruddock Division
by default.
It’s not the way the Panthers want-
ed to cross the threshold into the
playoffs, but they’ll take it.
“We’re going to see where we can
go with it,” Brady said.
Now, all that’s to be decided is
if the Panthers can move up in the
division standings and attain a bet-
ter playoff seeding. Currently, the
Panthers have 12 games remaining
and have one in hand over the sev-
enth-place Whitby Fury.
After last weekend’s play, the Pan-
thers (8-23, 3 OT wins, 2 OT losses, 1
shootout loss) remain three points
back of the Fury. But, the Fury could
be awarded two more points as they
may get those points for a game
against now-defunct Trenton.
Although no decision’s been
made by the league as of yet, Brady
suspects they’ll rule in favour of each
team getting two points for their re-
maining games against Trenton.
“If Whitby’s given the points it
might be extremely tough to chase
them,” he said.
The Panthers can make up some
ground on Whitby with a game to-
night (Thursday) at the Iroquois Park
Sports Centre. On Friday, Pickering
hosts the Bowmanville Eagles at the
complex at 7:30 p.m. and, on Sun-
day, they’re in Port Hope against the
Predators at 7 p.m.

looks for a deflection in front of the net. The Stars defeated the Panthers 6-4.
Panthers’
Postscript
The Panthers were relatively
quiet at the league’s trade dead-
line on Saturday. The lone deal
was picking up goaltender Tyler
Kimmel from the Orangeville

Ajax Attack poised to set new franchise mark for victories
Two more wins
would set new record
for a season
By Al Rivett
arivett@durhamregion.com
AJAX — The Ajax Attack is on
the verge of making some fran-
chise history in the not-so-dis-
tant future.
And, Attack head coach Carey
Durant is anxious for his players
to set a new standard for wins for
an Ajax junior hockey team.
“It will be a real feather in our
cap to get more than 23 wins.
When we beat that record all the
stuff people have labeled us for
will be gone.”
And, when you’re a franchise
that’s seen its fair share of sub-
par seasons in the past, to have a
team that’s on the brink of going
where no Ajax junior team has
gone before, be it the Attack or its
predecessor, the Axemen, is a big
accomplishment indeed.
“To beat that record would be
huge,” said Durant. “I almost feel
like the Boston Red Sox carrying
that weight for so long and hav-
ing the curse lifted.”
The previous 23-win high-
water mark was set while the
team was still known as the ‘Axe-
men’ during the 2000-01 cam-
paign.
So far in the 2008-09 OHA On-
tario Junior Hockey League sea-
son, the Attack has amassed 19
wins and, with two more victories
awarded for upcoming games
against the now-defunct Tren-
ton Hercs, that brings the magic
number to two. In other words,
the Attack must taste victory
twice in their final eight regular-
season contests to becoming the
winningest squad in franchise
history.
Durant is more than willing to
share the accolades for a season
gone right, pointing out the solid
work of GM John Tugnutt and
especially owner Rob Stein for
standing by the club during the
vagaries of season’s past.
“He put his best foot forward
this year and made things hap-
pen,” said Durant of Stein, who
signed off on three deadline
deals to bring in forwards Brett
Eagleson and Mark D’Alessandro
and defenceman Brock Owen to
bolster the team in the stretch
run toward the playoffs.
The three new players all had
an impact as the team earned a

wins: 23, in 2000-01

split of weekend games against
the Lindsay Muskies and the Vil-
lanova Knights.
Against the Knights,
D’Alessandro burned his former
team for two goals in leading the
Attack to a 5-2 victory at the Ajax
Community Centre on Sunday.
D’Alessandro, 20, who toiled
for the Attack two seasons ago,
is a welcome addition, mostly for
the physical play he brings, not to
mention his goal-scoring ability.
“He is, by far, the toughest play-
er in the OHA. He’s brought a
tremendous amount of grit and
character to our team. He’s ex-
actly what we need,” said Durant.
And, Eagleson contributed two
points (both assists) in his first
two games with the Attack, Du-
rant believes he’ll be an impor-
tant offensive contributor for the
team after coming over from the
Markham Waxers in a cash deal.
“He’s a phenomenal kid. I
didn’t realize he’s as good as he
is. He’s a skilled guy and he’s
got good leadership qualities. He
helps settle the younger players
down.”
And, stay-at-home defenceman
Owen was also a steadying influ-
ence on the blue line in his initial
two games with the Attack.
“His patience and calmness in
the way he plays will settle us
down,” said Durant.
Against the Muskies at the Lind-
say Community Centre on Friday,
the Attack fell behind 5-1 after
two periods. They rallied for two
goals in the third before Kevin
George scored into an empty net
with 32 seconds remaining to end
the Ajax uprising.
The Attack are in Bowmanville
tonight (Thursday) for a makeup
game with the Eagles that was
previously postponed. The Aja-
cian then suit up for back-to-back
home dates with the Port Hope
Predators on Saturday and the
Whitby Fury on Sunday. Both
games are at the Ajax Community
Centre at 3 p.m.
