Residents
apprehensive about
23-unit detached
home development
By Kristen Calis

PICKERING — After a long dis-
cussion and resident presenta-
tions, the planning and develop-
ment committee approved a draft
plan of subdivision in the Rose-
bank neighbourhood Monday.
Last February, Rosebank resi-
dents packed the Pickering City
Council chambers to dispute the
proposal for 23 detached homes.
Concerns included increased traf-
fic, the loss of wildlife and trees
and reduced lot frontages.
Kate Cherrett, a Rosebank
Road resident since 1962, spoke
out Monday against the proposed
alignment of a new northerly road
to serve the subdivision as it will
entirely abut her property, where
a turning circle is set to go. The
shift in the road leaves Rosebank
Road with smaller building lots
than those on Oakwood Drive, she
said.
“It will also put any homes built
behind our current residence clos-
er to our back fence and affect the
resale value of our home on Rose-
bank,” she said.
The developer’s planning con-
sultant, Lorelai Jones of Lorelai
Jones and Associates, said the
road design is rough and shows
the possibility for a road.
“It’s not intended to be hard
and fast, (and doesn’t mean) it’s
exactly where the road is to go,”
she said.
When plans were first an-
nounced, residents were upset by
a report on the Rosebank Sani-
tary Sewage Pumping Station that
found a number of problems such
as limited capacity and inaccu-
rate instrumentation and controls.
Durham Region is currently con-
cluding a Class Environmental As-
sessment and the station should
be replaced this year or in 2010,
staff said.
A number of residents were dis-
appointed with the loss of wood-
land that will ensue with the de-
velopment. Although the Toronto
and Region Conservation Author-
ity found the woodland on the

Union wants to see contract
progress, or else...
By Crystal Crimi
ccrimi@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — A strike or work-to-rule action
could be coming to Durham’s public schools
this spring.
Public school board elementary teachers
could be in a strike position by the end
of March if significant progress on contract
talks isn’t made by Feb. 13, announced David
Clegg, president of the Elementary Teachers’
Federation of Ontario, Thursday morning.
“Now’s the time to sit down and be honest
and tell us where you stand on the issues,”
Mr. Clegg said.
The February deadline was set because
school boards have been dragging their
feet and waiting for a provincial solution to
contracts, Mr. Clegg said. In the meantime,
they’ve been signing deals with groups that
have the provincial framework in place, such
as the secondary teachers, he added.
“We have certainly experienced it locally —
that we’ve been put on the backburner while
the school board negotiated with groups that
had agreements,” said Rachel Gencey, local
federation president,
All teachers were offered a three per cent
raise for each of four years, as well as other
benefits, for signing within the provincial
framework before a set deadline. The public
elementary union is the only group that did
not reach an agreement. As a consequence,
the Province is only providing public school
boards with funding to support a two per
cent increase for two years for elementary
teachers.
“We’ll be looking at the equivalent salary
as our secondary counterparts,” Ms. Gencey
said.
They’re also looking for more prep time
and days allocated for assessments, such as
what secondary school teachers receive, she
said.
“The DDSB is committed to bargaining in
good faith and to reaching a fair agreement
with ETFO within the parameters of the pro-
vincial funding provided,” said a Durham
District School Board statement. “We have
dates scheduled for negotiations with ETFO
and look forward to a positive resolution for
everyone.”
The Durham board and the local have set
three meeting dates for the week of Feb. 9,
Ms. Gencey said. If the elementary teach-
ers don’t receive what the other education
groups did, the ETFO will look at a strike
mandate.
But, Ms. Gencey doesn’t anticipate “an ac-
tual picket-line strike” anytime soon. Teach-
ers would have to first vote, and then they’d
probably take work-to-rule action. If that
occurred, it would likely be more board than
school focused, she added. tnedutS

Joy Cretney checks
into Czech Republic
By Margaret Cappa
Special to the News Advertiser
AJAX — Supporting diabetes
research has Joy Cretney Czech-
ing into Prague in May 2009.
Ms. Cretney will be running in
the Prague marathon for Team
Diabetes Canada.
“It’s incredible the number of
Canadians living with diabetes
and the lack of knowledge people
have about the disease,” she said.
Ms. Cretney, a 23-year-old Ajax
resident, says she’s learned a lot
about the disease since she be-
came involved with Team Diabe-
tes in 2006. She was inspired to
run for the organization by a for-
mer co-worker with the disease.
Running wasn’t always Ms.
Cretney’s sport though. Growing
up, she was a competitive gym-
nast, and it wasn’t until she went
to university that she started run-
ning.
“I went to Queen’s in Kingston
and it seemed like everybody ran
for exercise there,” she said.
So, Ms. Cretney joined the trend
and picked the Toronto half mara-
thon in 2005 as her first race. While
training for the Toronto event, Ms.
Cretney’s co-worker with diabe-
tes told her about Team Diabetes.
From him, Ms. Cretney learned
she shouldn’t just run for the sake
of running, but run for a cause.
Ms. Cretney’s first Team Dia-
betes race was in Iceland in 2006.
The Prague marathon will be her
second for the organization.
To participate in a Team Dia-
betes race runners have to raise a
minimum of $6,100, she said. To
help raise the money, Ms. Cretney
has organized a fundraiser at Hey-
denshore Pavilion in Whitby on
Jan. 24.
The fundraiser, ‘Team Diabetes
Celebrates the Arts’, is sponsored
by Timbren Industries, said Ms.
Cretney.
“Thankfully I have a lot of artis-
tic friends,” she said. “There will
be live music, an art display and
some other artistic presentations.”
One of the presentations is a
video which profiles a few Dur-
ham residents who live with dia-
betes. The video shows viewers
what someone with the disease
goes through each day, she said.
Planning the fundraiser has
been her main focus lately, she
said. After the event, she needs
to get serious about her training
for the 42-km race, Ms. Cretney
said. Not only has Team Diabetes
arranged her training through the
Running Room, they’ve taught her
how to take care of her body dur-
ing training and effectively fund-
raise, Ms. Cretney said.
Staying involved with support-
ing diabetes research is important
to Ms. Cretney. In fact, she hopes
to do more than run for the cause.
“It would be neat to volunteer
beyond fundraising and running,”
she said. “I’d like to help organize
events for future Team Diabetes
participants.”
Even if organizing events for
Team Diabetes is in her future, Ms.
Cretney will keep doing the runs as
long as her body lets her, she said.
Those interested in pledging Ms.
Cretney can visit www.teamdia-
betes.ca and click on the “Pledge
a Participant” link. To attend the
Jan. 24 fundraiser, e-mail Ms.
Cretney at joy_cretney@yahoo.ca.

and the developer agreed Rose-

Solicitors for Rosebank Proper-

Some residents were opposed
to lot frontages being a 14-metre

The staff report said neighbour-

should be “approximately” 15 me-

metres isn’t a large deviation.
Rosebank Properties has ap-
pealed to the Ontario Municipal

a decision on the developer’s ap-

AJAX — A company has been hired to
do interior restoration work on the former
St. Francis de Sales Church.
Rutherford Contracting will be paid al-
most $104,000 to do the first phase of the
work.
Renovation work includes structurally
reinforcing the ground floor so it can
hold more weight, reinforcing timber and
trusses in the attic, repairing and adding
more steel rods throughout the facility
and removing drywall and carpeting.
First-phase work should take between
four-to-six weeks to complete, said Ray
Ford, the Town’s building maintenance
co-ordinator, adding it should be finished
in mid-February.
Work in the second phase is primarily
exterior work, including brick restoration,
foundation wall repair and waterproofing,
roof replacement in some small area, to
go along with eaves repair, and window
restoration, including the stained glass
restoration.
There’s also interior work, such as me-
chanical system replacement and electri-
cal system repairs.
“Phase two is the major part of the reno-
vation work,” Mr. Ford said.
The tender for the second phase will
be put out in March and the work would
start as soon as weather permits. Sec-
ond-phase work is expected to take about
seven months.
Council included $700,000 in the
2008 budget for the work, while another
$513,000 will be needed for additional
work this year.
Mr. Ford said the $513,000 is being in-
cluded in the 2009 budget, which council
will consider in February.
The Town has also reached an agree-
ment with the Durham Catholic District
School Board on the use of the parking
lot. The Town will have exclusive use of 20
spaces at all times.
The Town would have ‘non-exclusive’
use of rest of the parking lot after school
and during the summer.
The five-year agreement will cost Ajax
about $3,000 a year -- a $500 annual fee
and 30 per cent of snow removal costs.
In 2007-08, the snow clearing cost was
almost $8,000, with the Town’s portion
about $2,400.
“The recreation department is doing a
feasibility study to determine the use” of
the building, Mr. Ford said.
“My stuff is to get the building into the
shape it needs to be.”
Ajax bought the church, built in 1871,
from the Toronto Archdiocese in 2007 for
$50,000.
The archdiocese had wanted to demol-
ish the building.

A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, January 9, 2009 durhamregion.com
I f you’re not a stay-at-home parent, the
Province’s potential move toward full-
time kindergarten probably sounds
pretty good.
I know it’s caught my attention.
This February, the Ontario government
will receive a report from Dr. Charles Pas-
cal, appointed as an early learning advi-
sor on the implementation of a full-day
kindergarten program to begin in 2010.
Hopefully, the economic downturn won’t
change the Liberals’ course of action.
Since coming back to work after hav-
ing a baby, I’ve been paying for day
care through the nose. No word of a lie,
it’s more than my mortgage. Although
I understand why it’s so expensive, it
doesn’t change the fact that it is, so much
so, that it even impacts family planning,
limiting the amount of children we’ll be
able to have.
If the government decides to go through
with the implementation of full-time
kindergarten, it will be a big monkey off
the backs of many parents in the same
position. Before and after school child-
care programs are still very expensive, but
hopefully we’ll be able to find someone
we trust to watch our child for an hour or
two a day, after school.
While some parents say all-day, every-
day kindergarten will be too hard on four
and five-year-old kids, many children
already attend a program where they go
to senior or junior kindergarten all day,
every other day. Kindergarten is also
optional.
Really, kindergarten can’t be that
much different than day care — learning
through play.
This year, the Durham Catholic District
School Board is testing a full-day kin-
dergarten pilot program at Monsignor
Philip Coffey Catholic School in Oshawa.
The board also gave the go-ahead to
noon-hour busing for kindergarten kids,
assuming the need would be eliminated
with all-day kindergarten. Judging by the
Province’s decision to provide more capi-
tal funding and add two more primary
classes to the St. Bernadette replacement
school in Ajax to support full-time kin-
dergarten, hopefully it won’t change its
mind.
A move to full-time kindergarten will
help alleviate some of the financial pres-
sure felt by parents, while providing jobs
for more teachers or early childhood edu-
cators, whomever the Province decides to
go for.
Hopefully, such a move won’t end up
driving up the price of day care for young-
er kids, in an effort to compensate for any
suspected loss of revenue.
Day cares may lose some business,
but they could gain in a different capac-
ity. As one parent recently pointed out,
more parents could opt to go back to
work sooner instead of staying at home
with their kids and enrol their toddler or
kindergarten-aged child into a day care,
whereas they wouldn’t have before.
Another parent also said the full-time
program could help better prepare kin-
dergarten kids for Grade 1 and the grow-
ing expectations they’ll face there.
So until Dr. Pascal releases his report,
my fingers are crossed for good news.
Crystal Crimi’s column appears once a
month. E-mail ccrimi@durhamregion.com.
Fingers crossed for
full-time kindergarten
I t was a good news-bad news kind
of year for the festive RIDE (Reduce
Impaired Driving Everywhere) cam-
paign in Durham Region this past holi-
day season.
First, the good news: Aggressive
enforcement and strategically placed
RIDE patrols got more drunk drivers
off the road this year than last with 152
charged with drunk driving.
Now, the bad news: Far more were
charged with drunk driving this year
than last, when 113 had the book
thrown at them after blowing over the
limit.
Does that mean the glass is half full or
half empty? Depends on your perspec-
tive.
Clearly, far too many motorists, often
those who have just received their
driver’s licence and are not supposed
to have any alcohol in their system, are
driving drunk. They are not getting the
message and are taking risks with their
own lives and with the lives of everyone
else on the road when they get behind
the wheel.
However, Durham’s police officers
have also shown they will take the steps
necessary to fight the scourge of drunk
driving. Led by the determination of
Durham Police Chief Mike Ewles, the
local force has declared war on drink-
ing and driving. There is no better
way to do this than by making it clear
that those who drink and drive will be
caught and charged. Fewer vehicles
were stopped this year than last, but
more were charged. Chief Ewles says
his officers took a more strategic
approach and, ”they’re getting up close
and personal . . . they’re being very sus-
picious.”
Beyond the carnage and personal
tragedy drinking and driving leads
to, there are the practical costs faced
by those charged. Automatic loss of
licence for one year. Legal fees. Possible
loss of a job if that job depends on driv-
ing. And on it goes and the penalties
increase drastically for repeat offend-
ers.
It clearly isn’t worth it, yet too many
people in our community continue to
do it despite a massive educational and
publicity effort by the likes of Mothers
Against Drunk Driving, our govern-
ments and law enforcement agencies.
All we can do is continue to make the
penalties tougher and publicize the
awful consequences of drinking and
driving and hope it sinks in. Meanwhile
RIDE will be out there to catch those
who just don’t get it.

Tell manager when you
get great customer service
To the editor:
I have worked in retail for several
years and enjoy dealing with the public.
I have outstanding customer service
skills and have the comments to prove
it. I interact with my customers and
they always leave my checkout laugh-
ing at my jokes.
I often get positive feedback, and it
makes me feel good.
However, 95 per cent of customers
won’t think twice about contacting a
manager or supervisor if they have had
a bad experience.
Well, I would like to see more positive
feedback on good customer service.
To tell us that you have had a pleas-
ant shopping experience is one thing,
but to tell a manager could and would
make a difference to everyone involved.
So next time you receive exceptional
service, please mention it to someone
and put a smile on their faces as we put
one on yours.

Latest incident happened
Christmas night
PICKERING — Police are exploring the
possibility that two recent carjackings were
carried out by the same suspects.
Durham cops are seeking the public’s as-
sistance as they try to identify three young
men believed to be behind the abductions
of two women in Pickering. The first incident
occurred last August while the latest was on
Christmas Day, police said.
In the August incident a 23-year-old
woman was abducted at a residence in the
Altona Road - Finch Avenue area Aug. 20 and
driven to Toronto in her own vehicle. The
woman was released unharmed after provid-
ing her assailants with bank cards, police
said. And on Dec. 25 a woman was forced
into her car in the area of Kingston and Brock
roads and taken to the south end of Pickering
near Oklahoma and Eyer drives, police said.
She was released by the suspects, who took
off with her 2007 Mazda 3, as well as her
purse and jewelry.
Investigators later found a stolen Honda
Civic near the area in which the 32-year-old
woman had been abducted. Police said the
car had been used in two street-level robber-
ies in Scarborough on Christmas Day before
the woman was abducted in Pickering.
The suspects in the carjackings are de-
scribed as three black men in their late teens
or early 20s. Anyone with information is
asked to call police at 905-579-1520, ext. 1926
or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Renee Paquette puts laughs ahead of looks
Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo
Renee Paquette, host of the sarcastic and sometimes silly Rippin’ It -N- Lippin’ It on Bite TV, clowns around in her Whitby home.
By Lyra Pappin
Special to the News Advertiser
DURHAM — Renee Paquette
grew up in Ajax and developed a
sense of humour early on, which
has served her well in her pursuit of
acting.
Getting her start early as some-
thing of a child model, Paquette
realized comedy was more her style
and ditched the glamour girl image
for a truer reflection of her person-
ality. It wasn’t all up to her, as Pa-
quette adds, “Don’t get me wrong,
I’ve tried to go in and audition for
the sexy girl, or the girl-next-door,
and I just can’t do it. Whenever I get
nervous I just make jokes.”
After a few cameos here and
there, including appearing in Kelly
Clarkson’s music video for the hit
song, ‘Behind These Hazel Eyes’,
and a national Noxzema com-
mercial, the Whitby resident has
landed a full-time gig hosting the
sarcastic, and sometimes silly, Rip-
pin’ It -N- Lippin’ It on Bite TV and
Bite online. Paquette employs her
quick-witted dry humour while in-
terviewing up-and-coming bands
as well as extreme sport athletes.
“Basically I talk to them about
nonsense and sometimes I might
actually ask them a question about
their album or a gnarly tour story,”
she says. “The other aspect of the
show where I go interview and
partake in extreme sports just got
kicked up a notch. I started taking
people down in the Pillow Fighting
League (which is totally mental),
did some roller derby, found the
handsome Robin Black (musician
and occasional MuchMusic per-
sonality) in an octagon, jumped out
of a plane, and I think I’m going to
be in a rodeo soon.”
Why did the feisty blonde with
seemingly no fear decide to take the
acting/comedy route?
“Well, when I realized I wasn’t
qualified for any other jobs,” she
quips.
“I basically hated school. I gradu-
ated (with flying colours I might
add...but then again I think every-
one who went to my school got
out with those), applied to colleges
and universities and then bailed at
the last second and enrolled my-
self in clown college instead...aka
Second City. It was so much fun
there because there are no lines to
be crossed. I’m most comfortable
when I don’t have to watch my Ps
and Qs if you know what I mean.”
Although she may sound flip
about her career, Paquette is con-
fident and committed to achieving
her dreams. After heading to Hol-
lywood and returning “with my tail
between my legs,” she still knew
she was eager to continue acting. “I
couldn’t picture myself doing any-
thing else,” she says. “Also, I have an
alarmingly short attention span, so
my job and I go hand in hand. I’ve
always wanted to do this. Except
when I was four years old and I
wanted to be a dolphin trainer. Yes,
that’s my fall-back plan.”
Paquette’s disarming mix of con-
fidence, self-effacing humour and
likeability has proven to be a suc-
cessful formula for finding her feet
in the industry. Although she may
not have been expecting such a wild
ride, she has been enjoying every
minute of it. Her highlight from Bite
so far? “For sure skydiving. That was
amazing. It was like being in a vid-
eogame...and being in a videogame
wouldn’t be half bad.”
Paquette has also been benefit-
ing from the freedom provided by
her show, with its unique mix of
online and broadcast content.
“I like to be able to say something
that will catch people off guard,” she
says. “People don’t usually expect
me to say some of the things I’ll
go for, which is fun for me! Plus,
thanks to the lovely World Wide
Web I can get away with a hell of a
lot more. There is so much content
on the internet and I think it’s great
for people like me who want to try
things out and make it accessible to
other views so we can get feedback.
There has been a major lack of work
for actors lately, so being able to do
your own thing, to create shows and
get a viewership from that is amaz-
ing.”
Despite a busy schedule, Paquette
continues to work on developing
her own material and is teaming
up with Pickering native Matt Chin
for a nighttime talk show, The Week
Show with Matt Chin. His format,
based on sketches and bits, appeals
to Paquette, who says her ideal job
would be her own half hour show.
“One that is successful and peo-
ple laugh at,” she adds wryly. “I kind
of flip flop between wanting some-
thing similar to The Sarah Silverman
Program and Chelsea Lately. They
are my total idols. Filthy-mouthed
Jewish girls. Only I’m Canadian so
that might automatically make my
mouth cleaner.”
For now, the outspoken and en-
gaging Paquette is content to keep
working hard and see how things
shape up.
“You know, hosting was one of
those things just sort of happened. I
went in for the audition and kind of
made a mockery of it but they liked
it and it’s been working out. I’m al-
ways open to anything, be it hosting
or acting.”

caustic wit in action, visit www.bite.

Ajax’s Trojans too much for Celtics
Pickering High
cruises past
Whitby school
in LOSSA senior
boys’ hoops
School team ranked
No. 1 in province
By Al Rivett
arivett@durhamregion.com
AJAX — The Pickering High
School Trojans were an equal-
opportunity destroyer on the
basketball court on Wednesday
afternoon.
The Trojans — the top-ranked
senior boys’ basketball team in
the province — went 10-deep on
the bench, with the subs playing
extended minutes in an egalitar-
ian approach to hoops in their
league game
against the
Sinclair Sec-
ondary School
Celtics at
Pickering
High.
Despite a revolving door of
Trojans in and out of the con-
test, they still managed to more
than double the score on the
overmatched Sinclair Secondary
School Celtics, 52-25 in Durham
Region ‘AAAA’ action.
In fact, not only were the min-
utes evenly distributed among
the players by Trojans’ head
coach Mike Gordensky, so too
was the scoring, with only one
Trojan, Jonathon Tull, reaching
double figures with 15.
The Trojans would get all they
needed in the first half, lead-
ing 23-7 with 4:20 remaining in
the second quarter. The Celtics
reached double figures after a
three-pointer by Nathan Brown
put the score at 29-12 with 1:04
remaining in the first half.
For the two-time OFSAA
champion Trojans (25-3 over-
all), it was their fourth straight
Lake Ontario Secondary School
Athletics (LOSSA) victory as
Pickering High remains unde-
feated in league play.
Gordensky says there’s only
one caveat regarding his even
distribution of minutes during
league action: play my way or
introduce yourself to the pine.
“A lot of guys don’t play a lot
in the big tournament games,
so they can play a lot in these
games,” he says. “They get a
chance to show me they deserve
more playing time. We had 10
guys, so I had two lines of five, so
every three minutes I put them
in. It keeps them fresh and hun-
gry. But, if they get selfish and
don’t play defence, I pull them
off.
“The bench is the biggest mo-
tivator in basketball because all
of these guys want to play. But,
if they don’t play the way that I
want them to, they won’t be on
the court.”
For their part, the Celtics re-
ceived a rude welcome back to
the court by the Trojans as the
Whitby squad was inactive dur-
ing the Christmas break. Coach
Tim Huleatt says the rust defi-
nitely showed.
“Our shooting wasn’t where it
normally would be, but I thought
some of our guys played well on
defence,” says Huleatt.
He concedes the Trojans put
on a clinic for the Celtics.
“My team senses that they’re
(the Trojans) on another level
that they need to strive for,” says
Huleatt.
Brown finished with a game-
high 16 points for the Celtics.
The Trojans face a stern test
this weekend at the prestigious
St. Michael’s Invitational Tour-
nament in Toronto.
The tournament features the
current top-four teams in the
province, with the Trojans lead-
ing the pack, followed by No. 2
Mother Teresa, No. 3 West Hill
and No. 4 Eastern Commerce of
Toronto.
“It will be a very good test,”
Gordensky predicts. “Personally,
I think Eastern is not the No. 4
seed. I think Eastern is the team
to beat. We’ve played them once
and lost by two at the buzzer.
Eastern is definitely the best
team we’ve played.”
The Trojans start their tour-
nament march today (Friday)
against Northern of Toronto at 1
p.m.
Pickering’s Pine Ridge Pumas
are also competing at the St.
Mike’s event.
The tournament final goes on
Sunday at 4 p.m.

Pickering High School Trojans’ Jerome Wynters slashes past Sinclair Secondary School Celtics’ Trae Lawson during
LOSSA ‘AAAA’ senior boys’ basketball in Ajax. The Trojans cruised to an easy 52-25 victory.
Nothing finer
than Carolina
for Trojans
Life was a beach — make
that a Beach Ball Classic — for
the Pickering High School Trojans
over the Christmas break.
Instead of idling through the
holiday season, the Trojans senior
boys’ basketball team took a trip
to the prestigious 28th annual
high school basketball tourna-
ment in Myrtle Beach, S. C. that
included elite teams from across
the U.S. as well as the Trojans,
the lone invitee from north of the
border.
Although the Trojans finished
with a 1-2 mark, just missing a
chance to compete for the con-
solation championship, Pickering
High coach Mike Gordensky
couldn’t utter enough superlatives
regarding the tournament and the
experience it lent his players.
“It was a great experience. It
was the most organized tourna-
ment I’ve ever been to. We played
in the (Myrtle Beach) convention
centre, which seated
8,000, and they aver-
aged 3,000 for every
game. The crowds were
great.”
Most importantly,
the Trojans were thrown
into the deep end of the
whole American expe-
rience of high school
hoops and acquitted
themselves extremely
well against top-flight
U.S. squads.
In the consolation semifinal
on Dec. 30, Pickering High fell to
the eventual consolation cham-
pion Elliott County (Ky.) Lions 77-
69. Although they fell behind 25-12
in the first quarter to the hot-
shooting Lions, the Trojans roared
back to get within one at half time
(37-36). Pickering High’s undoing,
however, was going 7-for-20 from
the free-throw line in the
contest.
“We got to the line, but
we didn’t make them,”
summed up Gordensky.
Jonathon Tull led the
Trojans with 26 points,
followed by Troy Joseph
with 10.
The Trojans opened
the Beach Ball Classic
against the Wheeler
(Ga.) Wildcats, dropping
a 74-68 decision to the power-
house Wildcats that finished as
tournament runners-up.
“We played great. We heard
a lot of positive comments from
people about our play. People ex-
pected we’d get blown out by 30
or 40,” said Gordensky, who was
without starting guard Robert Ga-
gliardi for the event.
Tull led the way with a 17-point
effort, followed by Kevin Thomas
with 15 and Natiel MacKenzie with
10.
In Game 2, the Trojans scored
a 69-56 victory over the J.L. Mann
(SC) Patriots. Tull produced 23
points, Kevin Thomas 14 and Mick
McIntosh 12 for Pickering High.
Gordensky noted he would
definitely head back to South Car-
olina for the tournament again if
another invitation was proffered.
“It’s a big invitational tourna-
ment and they invite only one Ca-
nadian team a year, so we were
fortunate enough to get invited.
We’d go back, for sure.”

Juniors add Trenton
Hercs’ rearguard
Brock Owen to fold
AJAX — The Ajax Attack
brought aboard a rugged,
stay-at-home defenceman on
Wednesday night to round out
their roster moves prior to Satur-
day’s OHA Ontario Junior Hock-
ey League’s trade deadline.
The Attack dealt for Trenton
Hercs’ rearguard Brock Owen,
19, as their final piece of the
team’s puzzle, in a cash deal with
the Hercs, which have suspend-
ed operations for the remainder
of the 2008-09 season.
And, general manager John
Tugnutt is thrilled to get the 6-
foot, 2-inch, 210-pound rear-
guard who loves to play a physi-
cal game.
“There were many teams in-
terested in bidding for him, but
we were able to get him, which is
tremendous. He was just what we
were looking for and we were a
preferred destination for Brock,”
said Tugnutt.
The deal for Owen negated
any further involvement by the
Attack in a multi-team ‘block-
buster’ deal that was once being
discussed, said Tugnutt. The
trade scenario, as it was consti-
tuted, would have cost the Attack
some roster players, something
Tugnutt was reticent to do in
order to acquire some defensive
help.
“When we got Brock,
we bowed out,” said
Tugnutt. “It worked
out best because
we get to keep
our players and
we got better
defensively,
which was a
goal.”
Best of all, Owen will have one
year of junior eligibility follow-
ing this season, said Tugnutt.
Tugnutt gave kudos to Attack
owner Robert Stein,
who threw his sup-
port, financial and
otherwise, behind the
acquisitions of
three players at
the trade dead-
line.
Ear-
lier this week,
the club ac-
quired forwards Brett Eagleson
from the Markham Waxers and
Mark D’alessandro from the Vil-
lanova Knights.
“He stepped up and certainly
put his money where his mouth
is,” said Tugnutt. “He has made
life very easy for me because he’s
been so accommodating.”
The Attack return to the ice to-
night (Friday) against the Lind-
say Muskies at the Lindsay Rec-
reation Centre.
The Ajacians are on home ice
at the community centre on Sun-
day at 3 p.m. against the Villa-
nova Knights.

A leaking basement is
frustrating and expensive – and it’s
not something you
want to have to fix
repeatedly. That’s
why it’s best to bring
in a professional,
someone who can
pinpoint the problem
and repair it right
the first time.
Gordon
Crawford of

Waterproofing in
Ajax has been in the
business for more
than 30 years and
has been in close to
15,000 homes in Durham region.
“I’ve seen virtually every possible leaking situation you can
imagine,” he says, “and I’m still learning.”
Crawford’s extensive experience has taught him to be
innovative and try different techniques to solve problems. He takes
pride in his troubleshooting ability.
“I like to professionally solve problems at the lowest, most
reasonable cost to the customer,” he says.
“Sometimes that may involve excavating the
entire perimeter of the house and replacing the
weeping tiles, but that’s because it’s absolutely
necessary.”
Crawford adds that if he can try something
else first, he will.
“An interior weeping tile system with
drainage board can be extremely efficient and
cost effective by saving costly damages to exterior
landscaping,” he says.
Crawford warns that it’s important not to
ignore the problem. He says homeowners who
invest in their foundations will save money in the
long term.
“Water corrodes and people tend to live
with the problem until it escalates into a bigger one,” he says. “You
have to get in quickly.”
