Emergency officials arrived on scene at about 2:30 a.m. to find the building fully en- gulfed in flames. “It’s just been a day from hell,” said shelter manager Ruby Richards, while visiting some of the surviving animals now under the care of Oshawa animal services. Ten dogs, two cats and one rat were rescued and some of them remain at a local veterinary clinic to undergo assessment. In addition to the dogs and cats that perished in the fire, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters also died in the blaze, which destroyed the building, caus- ing an estimated $250,000 in damage. The market has turned once- profitable companies on their heads, auto consulting firm found- er Dennis DesRosiers said. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler “are not messed up,” he said as he addressed the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce Tuesday. But it is going to take the auto- makers some time to get through the storm. The issues the Detroit Three now face are the result of a cyclical market downturn, loss of market share and credit issues in the U.S., he said. These factors have left the com- panies that were trying to restruc- ture up against a wall. Restructur- ing will take the companies years, not months, in the best-case sce- nario, Mr. DesRosiers said. If the downturn lasts one or two more quarters, government assistance could be enough to get the companies through the rough road they’re facing. If the downturn lasts longer and gets worse, then even more financial aid might be necessary, he said. “It does not solve the problems, but it does buy them more time.” Mr. DesRosiers praised federal politicians for the work they’ve done to help the industry. Cana- dians are lucky to be represented by politicians who understand the auto industry and are interested in keeping jobs here, Mr. DesRosiers said. “Thank God we have politicians in Canada with a backbone.” American leaders have turned the question of funding for North American automakers into a game of politics, he said. “Quite frankly, it’s disgusting,” he said. “We are damn lucky to have a group from Canada that want our jobs and are out in front on this.” Another issue facing the com- panies in Canada is the issue of compensation for union employ- ees. But it’s not wages that are to blame; it’s cash for things such as the social justice fund, the legal defence fund and other things “on the non-wage side that have to go,” Mr. DesRosiers said. The Canadian Auto Workers union is like “a mastodon fighting its way out of a tar pit,” he said. Mr. Buckley was responding Wednesday to auto analyst Dennis DesRosiers who spoke in Oshawa Tuesday and said unions are no lon- ger necessary. Mr. DesRosiers indicated auto unions were created last century to protect workers from unfair prac- tises and unsafe working conditions. For the most part these issues have been cleared out of the system, so unions are not needed, Mr. Buckley said the comments were uncalled for. “We want to be part of the solution,” he said. “We have done a number of creative things to keep General Motors com- petitive.” Mr. Buckley pointed to the $300 million in cuts the union al- lowed when negotiating their con- tract in May. But Mr. DesRosiers said the union givebacks aren’t enough for auto companies losing billions of dollars a month. While other cultures are dis- played, Mr. Dayton said it was im- portant to “acknowledge and re- spect Christmas. It’s included to. Others are as well. One of the aims is to “educate people in a non-threatening way,” Mr. Dayton said. In September, the Town held a Celebrate Diversity Month and recreation staff wanted to use the holidays to show how other cul- tures celebrate. “Things are going on in many cultures at this time,” he said. “We recognize Ajax and coun- cil made diversity and community engagement a priority. Recreation and Culture has a big role to play. We want to move the agenda for- ward,” Mr. Dayton said. City officials met with Humane Society staff and volunteers shortly before noon to discuss the best course of action. “We’re going to set up an interim plan and make sure the best care is being provided for the surviving animals,” manager of animals services Kathy Duncan said. Several animal hospitals and shelters throughout the region have been notified and are willing to help in any way they can. “We were just devastated when we heard,” said Cindy Guimond from the Oshawa Ani- mal Hospital, which sent a doctor to the loca- tion for assistance. “We’re just waiting for direction right now, but we will do what we need to do.” The Toronto Humane Society sent a rescue vehicle to the site to offer help in finding new homes for the animals in the aftermath of the fire. Lindsey Brenner, supervisor of Pickering Animal Services, said in an interview she hadn’t reached anyone at the Humane Soci- ety, but left a message that Pickering would be more than willing to house some of the rescued animals at its shelter. “We’re willing and we want to support them in any way that we can,” she said. Pickering has dealt with the Humane So- ciety in the past, Ms. Brenner said, since it is responsible for housing abused animals all across Durham Region. Shelter workers, volunteers and a humane society board member were visibly upset at the loss of the animals. “I can’t believe it. I’m just numb,” recep- tionist Melissa MacArthur said. The goal for staff now is to pool resources and work through their emotions to come up with solutions for how to move past the trag- edy, staff member Candi Yeo said after the meeting. “All we can do is stay strong, hope for the best and stick together as a team.” The public is being asked to not bring in donations of food, litter and blankets to animal services for the time being, but a trust fund has been set up to accept monetary donations. Donations can be made by visit- ing the Humane Society of Durham Region website at www.humanedurham.com or by contacting the Ontario Society for the Pre- vention of Cruelty to Animals at 1-888-ONT- SPCA (668-7722), ext. 323. Oshawa City staff will also be fielding phone calls about dona- tions at 905-436-331. While investigation into the cause of the fire continues, anyone with information about the incident is being asked to contact Durham Regional Police at 1-888- 579-1520 or the Oshawa Fire Services at (905) 433-1236 and speak with chief fire prevention officer Susan King. -- With files from Stefanie Swinson and Kristen Calis Damage set at $250,000 as volunteers work to ‘stay strong and stick together as a team’ ✦ Damage from page 1 PER MONTH FOR 48 MONTHS WITH $2,349 DOWN ON APPROVED CREDIT $1781.9 % # £LEASE FOR / APR @2009CIVIC DX’09 FEATURES INCLUDE:• Redesigned Front Bumper, Reconfigured Headlights & Taillights • 1.8L 140hp 16-Valve SOHC i-VTEC®Engine • Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE ™) Body Structure • 160-Watt AM/FM/CD Audio System with MP3/Windows Media® Audio Playback Capability…and more. $16,990 MSRP‡ 2009 ACCORD LX ’09 FEATURES INCLUDE: • 2.4L 177hp 16-Valve DOHC i-VTEC ®Engine • Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) Body Structure • 160-Watt AM/FM/CD Audio System with MP3/Windows Media®Audio Playback Capability and 6 Speakers • Vehicle Stability Assist™(VSA®) with Traction Control…and more. $25,090 MSRP 2009 CR-V LX ’09 FEATURES INCLUDE: • 2.4L 166hp 16-Valve DOHC i-VTEC ®Engine • Advanced Compatibility Engineering™(ACE™) Body Structure • Vehicle Stability Assist™(VSA®) with Traction Control • 160-Watt AM/FM/CD Audio System with MP3/Windows Media®Audio Playback Capability...and more. $27,790 MSRP Accord Sedan LX model CP2539E Civic Sedan DX model FA1529EX CR-V LX model RE3839E VALUE Honda resale values are the highest in the industry ECONOMY This is the most fuel efficient Honda lineup ever OWNERSHIP Honda costs of ownership are below industry average PER MONTH FOR 48 MONTHS WITH $4,195 DOWN ON APPROVED CREDIT $298 2.9 % # £ LEASE FOR / APR @ PER MONTH FOR 48 MONTHS WITH $3,356 DOWN ON APPROVED CREDIT $298 3.9 % # £ LEASE FOR / APR @ *PURCHASE FINANCINGFOR 36 MONTHS%1.9 †ON APPROVEDCREDITASLOWAS 905-831-5400 www.pickeringhonda.com #Limited time lease offers based on new 2009 Honda models. A/P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, December 18, 2008 durhamregion.com I was in a mall last week, wading into my Christmas shopping and I have to tell you, in spite of the ubiquitous Christmas muzak, garlands, baubles and fake snow in every store window, the place didn’t feel too festive. No one seemed par- ticularly merry or jolly. In fact, with the lone exception of the sincerely grateful smile from the Salva- tion Army guy, most people had a look of grim resignation on their pusses. I’ve seen newsreel footage of POW’s who looked happier. I wondered if maybe ‘Soylent Night’ or ‘Wreck the Halls’ mightn’t have been a more appropriate background tune. And no wonder, I thought. We’ve all been fed a pretty steady diet of bleak lately. If you believe half of what you read, hear and watch these days it’s a miracle more of us aren’t getting chummy with the business end of a revolver. And even more debilitat- ing than the constant stream of gloom and doom is the sense of powerlessness that seems to always accompany it. Most of us feel like there’s nothing that can be done. I disagree. There’s a lot all of us can do. And it’s vital that we start doing it before this thing becomes a self-fulfilling proph- ecy and we all find ourselves living under- neath the Gardiner Expressway. One of my favourite books is a little gem called ‘The Man Who Planted Trees’, by Jean Giono. Essentially it is the tale of a man who, over a lifetime, plants acorns into a barren and desolate countryside. Slowly and eventually his patient, positive actions produce a remarkable transfor- mation in the landscape. Vitality and life return in all their wondrous forms. By the end of his long life of planting acorns he has left behind a beautiful forest where before was only desiccation and rock. From his simple actions, untold lives are changed for the better. I love this story most because it is an ode to the difference one person can make. I take great comfort and hope from that. Giono, after all, was a man who lived through the ravages of two world wars. If he could see a brighter future in the midst of all of that surely those of us facing today’s challenges can as well. And we can all plant our trees. We needn’t carry a bag of acorns around with us looking for fertile ground. But we can certainly plant seeds of joy and happiness everywhere we find ourselves. We can consciously smile instead of frown. We can pay compliments to one another, be gra- cious to strangers, do little kindnesses. Never underestimate your power with tools such as these. Your smile, your thank you, your “You look beautiful today” may be the thing, the one precious thing that turns somebody’s day around. And then that person, in turn, may very well pay your gift forward to another. In short order you have a chain reaction, a forest if you will, of people feeling and acting better than they might have had you not planted your seed. Of course, this process can work in reverse as well. A scowl begets a scowl and so on and so forth. We all have the option to plant weeds or flowers. Which will you choose today? Durham resident Neil Crone, actor- comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. He is co-starring in the CBC hit sitcom, Little Mosque on the Prairie. Higher RIDE numbers take some cheer out of festive season D espite all the publicity and the information provided by orga- nizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, people continue to drink and drive. Let the numbers show that Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere patrols are doing extremely brisk business this fes- tive season. Unfortunately. It shouldn’t be this way. For decades now there has been a concerted pub- lic and legal effort to stigmatize and penalize those who choose to imbibe and drive. The theory has always been simple: Increase the penalties and you’ll be able to decrease the number of those who drive drunk. But, in spite of that reasonable and logi- cal approach, it hasn’t really worked out that way. Consider that last year, during the first four weeks of the festive RIDE program, 67 drinking and driving charges were laid. The number jumped to 101 this year. Police have stopped 2,455 vehicles, administering 206 breath tests, deliver- ing 28 12-hour suspensions and charging 11 G1 and G2 licence holders so far this month. And they’ll keep on working to get drunk drivers off the road. Our online reporter, Stephanie Swin- son, went out with a RIDE spot check last Friday night on Simcoe Street North just south of Durham College and the Univer- sity of Ontario Institute of Technology. You can see her video report on newsdur- hamregion.com. Ms. Swinson got an up-close and first- hand look at the problem Durham police deal with on a nightly basis as some drivers try to evade RIDE checks and others blow over the limit. Her visit with the RIDE crew happened during what Durham Police Sergeant Paul McCurbin said was, “probably one of the highest weekends we’ve seen for impaired driv- ing arrests.” It’s hard to fathom how adults who’ve had it pounded into their heads about the penalties and dangers of drinking and driving can continue to do it again and again. All society can do is continue to be vigi- lant with programs like RIDE, make sure the penalties and punishments fit the offences and publicize the problem. If you drink, don’t drive. Plan for a des- ignated driver, take a taxi, arrange for a ride, sleep over at a friend’s house. Do whatever it takes but do the right thing. Try to brave a smile amid these turbulent times Neil Crone/ Enter Laughing Reader received super care at Rouge Valley To the editor: Just a small letter of thanks to the staff at the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital to show my appreciation for the excellent care and kindness given to me from late August into the first week of September. The doctors, administration staff and personal service workers all made my stay the best it could be. During a routine chiropractic visit my leg was very sore and slightly swollen for no apparent reason at all. An ultra- sound was ordered and I tested positive for deep vein thrombosis. A few tests co-ordinated by my own doctor and I was admitted to the Ajax and Pickering hospital for the next week, including the long weekend, which many of us had off. Instead of running for a third term, Trustee Crawford stepped down from her seat as the Durham District School Board’s chairwoman during its annual elections on Dec. 15. “As my hero George Costanza would say, ‘I’m going out on a high note’,” Trust- ee Crawford said, pointing her finger to the ceiling. She then grabbed her box of tissues and vacated the seat. Although it sounds like she’s quitting, that’s not the case, she said. “I firmly believe it’s healthy for an orga- nization to have a change in leadership,” Trustee Crawford said. “I’m looking for- ward to a new change in leadership.” Having the position of chairwoman has changed her as a person, Trust- ee Crawford said. She’s not the same person she was two years ago, scared out of her mind and not knowing what to say, she added. Oshawa Trustee Larry Jacula filled her vacated spot. He was nominated by fellow Oshawa Trustee Michael Barrett and was acclaimed. “I’m shocked, I’m honoured,” Trustee Jacula said. Oshawa Trustee Mike Barrett now sits as vice-chairman and was also acclaimed after being nominated by Scugog Trustee Joyce Kelly. He represents the board well and his leadership will serve them well, she said. Uxbridge Trustee Joe Allin was ac- claimed as vice-chairman of the standing committee, and Pickering Trustee Chris Braney and Whitby Trustee Christine Winters were nominated to finance com- mittee. “Thank you but I’ll stand down at this time,” Trustee Braney said. He also refused to nomi- nate himself to be an alternate for the Special Education Advi- sory Committee (SEAC). “I just want to take a break from some other things and con- centrate on Pickering for now,” Trustee Braney said in an inter- view following the meeting. He wants to concentrate on sup- porting the school communities and in- creasing literacy results, he said. Diamonds&Dreams Mental health-care professionals say hospital is refusing to renew their agreement By Parvaneh Pessian ppessian@durhamregion.com WHITBY — Mental health care physicians are calling for imme- diate action to negotiate a new contract after having gone without one for eight months. Hospital management at the Whitby Mental Health Centre (WMHC) is denying doctors their “human right to collectively bar- gain” the terms and conditions of their employment, said Dr. Adam Waese, president of the medical staff association. The WMHC was divested from the Ministry of Health to the pub- lic hospital sector in March 2006, meaning it is no longer managed by the Province and instead run by a community-based board of directors. Since the originally negotiated contract expired in April 2008, no renewed agreement has been established for about 30 medical staff members at the facility. “The medical staff association has been asking the hospital for many months to renew and up- date this agreement,” Dr. Waese said. “The hospital has refused to do this and insists it will now decide about the conditions of employ- ment for doctors at the hospital and deal with physicians on an individual basis.” The collective-bargaining ap- proach was applied under the Province’s management but has not been inherited under the new governance, said Susan Nakhle, director of communications and public affairs at WMHC. “There’s an interest from some to go back to a previous model, but our physicians are non-unionized (and) they’re salaried employees, so there is no collective agreement in place to negotiate.” Hospital management is simply attempting to make a transition into a new system of operation and has conducted several con- sultation sessions with doctors on an individual basis to address the issue, she said. “WMHC became a new orga- nization under new management and it meant that we had to estab- lish a new structure, a new strategy and a new vision because now we are a public hospital.” Dr. Waese said the hospital’s stance only creates an unfavour- able atmosphere for the delivery of quality mental health care ser- vices. “The hospital is already short- staffed of physicians in several of our departments and we believe the hospital’s plan will make it increasingly hard to attract and maintain physicians at the hospi- tal.” Ms. Nakhle said physicians’ salaries have not been affected by the lack of agreement and the new collaborative approach will strive to include their input. Others, like Kathleen Hopper, whose son is a former patient at the facility, are concerned about disruption to services for patients. “WMHC is a world-class, state- of-the-art facility offering cutting- edge programs and services and we are fortunate to have a resource of this calibre within our com- munity,” she said, adding her son benefited greatly from the aid of the physicians at the centre. WMHC management will con- tinue to monitor the situation to ensure the quality of patient care is not compromised, Ms. Nakhle said. “Because there is no collective agreement, the physicians are salaried employees so there really isn’t any opportunity to create any kind of job action.” Galbraith Jewellers voted again for BEST JEWELLER Winner for past 3 years! 132 Harwood Ave. S. 905-683-0407 ALL ON SALE Jewellery durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 12 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, December 18, 2008 Doctors in limbo over contract dispute Pink Opal Supporters Brooklin Concrete Products Joyce O'Connell Mason Windows The Oshawa Durham Symphony Orchestra Van Belle Flowers Yummy Pleasures The Pink Opal Ball Committee: Marg Braithwaite JoAnne Callery Kathy Chateauvert Sandy Cook Kim DeNoble Carol Duncan Bonnie Fraser Audrey MacInnis Andrea Shaw Jenny Souch Jacqui van Belleghem Pink Opal Sponsor Sandy Cook Marketing and Design Pink Diamond Sponsor Metroland Media Group Ltd. Joyce Smith, the founder of the Sec- ond Chance Wildlife Sanctuary in north Pickering, has held a Valentine’s dance fundraiser for years in order to help feed, house and pay medical bills for the hun- dreds of sick, injured and abandoned animals she cared for. The shelter has managed to stay alive since her passing, but desperately needs funds to care for the animals that live at the shelter and those that will continue to find refuge there. In 2009, the Second Chance Valentine’s Memorial Dance will be held, a week late, on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the O’Brien Room at the Pickering Community Centre. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean pushed for Council to agree to cover the cost requested at Monday’s meeting. “The new (people running the) orga- nization (are) very keen on Joyce’s dedi- cation to rehabilitate animals and save them,” he said. The City has a one-time grant policy for fundraisers for charitable organizations. Emergency situations are subject to im- mediate funding, and any other requests have to go to Council for approval. The grant of $1,210 will cover the hall rental, ticket and flyer printing, a liquor licence, bartender and hall preparations. The money comes from the Ontario Heri- tage Trust, which is funded by the Province, and goes toward the purchase of 250 acres of land to add to the Enniskillen Conservation Area. It’s about 10 kilometres north of Bow- manville. “We’re buying in that area primarily to pre- serve it from inappropriate development or other pressures from the growth in Durham Region’s population,” said Russ Powell of the Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority (CLOCA). CLOCA now owns more than 1,400 acres in the Enniskillen valley which has been purchased with the aid of partners includ- ing the Region of Durham, the Oak Ridges Moraine Foundation, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Conservancy Canada. “It’s cold water fishery streams and a lot of groundwater resources, forestry, wildlife, wetlands,” said Mr. Powell. “It’s a really un- disturbed portion of the Oak Ridges Moraine. There’s very little development in it, (just) one small farm. Most of it is open land and forest.” The four purchases that the Ontario Heritage Trust is funding have already been made because CLOCA expected the funding to come through. “Sometimes you have to close the prop- erty and hope everything goes through as planned.” RSS UPDATESRSS UPDATES newsdurhamregion.com Conservation efforts grow durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 16 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, December 18, 2008 SPORTS ✦ E-mail game scores to Al Rivett, arivett@durhamregion.com ✦ Get local 24/7 newsdurhamregion.com Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Fouled on the way up PICKERING — Accent Building Sciences’ Tony Oliver is fouled by Van Kempen Insurance’s John Esposito as he goes to the net during Pickering Men’s Basketball League action at Dunbarton High School on Monday night. Bumping into Borje priceless for Ajax man Bill Zolis runs into Leafs’ hall of famer four times in two days By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com AJAX — Unabashed Toronto Maple Leafs’ fan Bill Zolis is still beaming about his good luck. Serendipity? Fate? Perhaps it was a combination of the two as he came into contact with Borje Salm- ing, a hall-of-fame defenceman who manned the blue-line for 16 seasons with the Blue and White. Suffice it to say, Salming is one of Zolis’s all-time favourite Leafs. But, it wasn’t just one brush with the popular Leaf alumnus. As it turned out, Zolis came in contact with Salming four times, quite by accident, at four separate places in a two-day span. And, during that time, the low-key and friendly Swede posed for a photo and autographed a picture from his playing days. “He was very shy and quiet,” said Zolis of meeting Salming. “He was so unassuming -- such a gentleman.” The whole run of kismet makes Zolis shake his head with incredu- lity. “No. Not in a million years,” said the 48-year-old Ajax resident, when asked if he would meet Salming once, let alone four times, in such a short time. Zolis first met Salming briefly while attending the Leafs’ open prac- tice at the Air Canada Centre. Upon leaving the arena, Zolis caught sight of the former Leaf great “walking in the hallway in a rush.” Although Zolis wanted to get a photo of him, it all happened too fast for him to get a snapshot. But, Zolis didn’t have to wait long to have his photo taken with Salm- ing. Upon browsing through Leafs’ merchandise at the Centre Sports store at the Air Canada Centre, Salm- ing was also there shopping. Salming “was just walking around with things in his hands. He was there shopping like everyone else. No one really noticed him there.” The big Swede readily agreed to have his photo taken. About three hours later, while shopping at a Hollister store at Toronto’s Eaton’s Centre with his daughter, Samantha, he again ran into Salming. “He was in a lineup with my daughter. No one recognized him there, except me,” said Zolis. Finally, the next day, while his daughter was working at the Station Street Grill in Ajax, she spied Sal- ming having breakfast with several other men at the eatery. “She calls me while at work and tells me that the same guy we saw yesterday was eating breakfast there. I said, ‘Are you sure?’ and she said. ‘I’m sure’. So, I said I will be over to pick you up. I rushed home to get a picture I had of Salming and went there and there he was eating with five others. I felt stupid and went up to him and told him the story and he told me he eats at Station Grill about four times a year (he resides in Stockholm) and I think it was his son that said you guys have to stop following each other around. “He signed my picture, which his son made a comment that Borje was in much better shape in the picture. I do not think anyone there in the restaurant knew who he was until I caused a stir.” Less than a week after his chance meetings with Salming, Zolis is still shocked at his good fortune. “What are the chances of this hap- pening?” he said. Submitted photo Ajax resident Bill Zolis, left, has his photo taken with Maple Leaf great Borje Salming while shopping at Centre Sports in the Air Canada Centre recently. Ajax Rams run down Redhawks AJAX — The Ajax High School Rams senior boys’ hockey team kept its unbeaten string intact in Durham Region league play with a lopsided victory over Oshawa’s O’Neill Red- hawks on Tuesday morning. The Rams improved its Lake On- tario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) league record to 9-0-1 with a 10-2 win over O’Neill at the Ajax Community Centre. Neil Voyame, Pat Mayhew and Jeff Bray netted a pair of goals. Scott Desroches, Bran- don Sellers, Drew Boyd and Ryan Brawley each added one apiece. The Rams, however, lost their first two games while competing at the Eastdale Christmas Classic tour- nament in Oshawa last week. Ajax High was beaten by the Hill Acad- emy from the Kleinburg area 5-2 and York Region’s Brother Andre school 3-2. Both teams are among the top- ranked GTA squads. Ajax High’s overall record now stands at 11-2-1. In other LOSSA hockey action, the Dunbarton High Spartans improved to 4-3-2 in league play with a 4-3 vic- tory over the Father Leo Austin Wild- cats of Whitby at Don Beer Arena on Tuesday. We had a wonderful life together. We created two beautiful girls. I thought I would grow old with you and we would see our girls graduate, get married and eventually have wonderful grandchildren that we could spoil together. I didn't know that you would be taken from us so soon. I treasure the time I had with you my dear. I miss your laugh, sense of humour, your sing- ing and dancing around the kitchen. I loved you so much that my heart breaks daily. What I would give to have you back with us, but all I have is the fond memories that I will hold onto for the rest of my life. I know that you are looking over us and helping us through our tough times. Your girls miss you tremendously and as Christmas approaches us, I want you to know that you were the best husband and father ever. I send all my love to you in heaven. Merry Christmas Baby!
