The senior director of planning and capital redevelopment and support services, Rick Gowrie, led politicians, business partners, supporters and the media on a tour of the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital’s construction progress on Friday. The $60-million redevelopment project, consisting of 70,000 square feet of new space and 70,000 square feet of renovated space, is expected to be complete in the fall of 2010. Patients can expect: a new emergency department; a new laboratory; a complex continuing care unit with a capacity of 30 beds; redesigned space for the diagnostic imaging and cardiac diagnostic areas; and, a new ambulatory care unit that will include space for out-patient procedures and a frac- ture clinic. The new emergency department is to be completed by August of 2009. “We’re 30 per cent complete,” Mr. Gowrie said. “We’re on time. We’re on budget.” The emergency department, which cur- rently sees more than 42,000 patients a year, will be able to handle 60,000. The ER is cur- rently 8,500 square feet and was built for only about 20,000 patients annually. “We’re going up to about 21,000 (square feet),” Mr. Gowrie said. Since temporary spaces are being set up to accommodate the areas that are under renovation, there have been some hiccups, Mr. Gowrie said, but mostly with parking. However, although the lot on the west side of the building was supposed to be closed until June, three-quarters of it re-opened last week, which has cleared up some of those problems. And, once the public sees the progress and the improvements the devel- opment will bring, Mr. Gowrie has noticed they get excited. “I think we’re getting some buy-in,” he said. Surgery on Ajax-Pickering hospital going smoothly ✦ See New, Page 4 Durham’s crime killers Anti-violence strategy has successful first year Province asked to keep funding alive By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Pickering sup- ports an anti-violence strategy in Durham and has asked the Prov- ince to continue funding the Dur- ham Regional Police to combat gun and street crime. Last year DRPS received $510,000 to create an anti-vio- lence strategy in Durham, and the Durham Region Anti-Violence In- tervention Strategy (DRAVIS) be- came operational early this year. The police must apply for the funding every year. The strategy was set up by the ministry of community safety and correctional services to combat gun-related violence and other street-level crime in the GTA. “My personal opinion I’ll give it is fantastic,” said Sgt. Jeff Moore of 19 Division’s Community Re- source Unit in a presentation to Council last Monday. Throughout the Region, 110 ini- tiatives have been completed and there have been 507 arrests due to the strategy, Sgt. Moore said. “Sixteen weapons, including one firearm, were seized (since the beginning of the year),” he said. Officers are deployed in uni- form and remain in high visibility in marked patrol cars, on foot and on bicycles during warm weather months. Officers also distribute specially printed business cards outlining DRAVIS so residents can become involved in crime prevention in their neighbourhoods. Inspector Steve Ross, 19 Divi- sion Unit Commander, said the team utilizes crime analysis to identify areas of Ajax and Pickering where violent crime has occurred and determine where it will likely occur. This allows police to take a pro- active approach to reduce vio- lence, increase community safety and improve the quality of life in the community. Also, Toronto and Durham have helped each other out by sharing information, Insp. Ross said. It’s done on a part-time basis “without having to deploy officers off the front lines,” he said. Basically, Const. Ross said, it’s primarily off-duty officers who work on the task force. The officers get overtime, but that is covered out of the funding from the Province, along with nec- essary equipment for the officers, such as shorts and helmets for the bike program. Council is asking Durham Re- gion and its municipalities for their support in the request. A motion by Ward 1 City Coun- cillor Jennifer O’Connell and Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean requesting the continuation of funding was passed unanimously by Council last week. Ajax council spent most of Tues- day reviewing the strategic plan put in place at the beginning of the council term, in early 2007. The current council term runs to November of 2010. “It’s very useful to get together like this. What we do and the re- ports, we lose track of where we are and what we’re accomplish- ing,” Mayor Steve Parish said. Christie McLardie, the Town’s communications manager, said the 12 priorities set at the beginning of the term remain, although one dealing with community develop- ment and outreach was moved up from number 11 into the top five. “They felt we needed to do more in that area,” Ms. McLardie said. “With a diverse population, we needed to do more outreach.” The top three priorities remain the same, with community safety number one, environmental initia- tives number two and protecting employment lands number three. “I felt this mid-term meeting was important. It’s unfortunate, we meet as a council on Mondays and at GGC (General Government Committee meetings on Thurs- day), but we don’t meet enough and have these chats,” Mayor Par- ish said. “Maybe we should do these things a couple of times” during a council term. It’s “self-serving to pat ourselves on the back” when a job is done properly, the mayor said, but it could lead to the Town living on it’s laurels. “We’ve got to keep going.” The plan the Town set at the beginning of the term “is a good plan. We’ve done some tweaking,” he said. Staff outlined challenges facing Ajax, including finance di- rector Rob Ford saying the cur- rent economic situation will have a major impact on the Town’s cof- fers. “Negative impacts will be in many areas, with the most signifi- cant being major revenue losses in all departments, including both development and non-develop- ment revenues.” On the positive side, the down- turn could see a drop in prices for construction work, lower inter- est rates on debentures, and lower or more stable prices for fuel, he said. John Fleck, the human resourc- es director, said adding more staff is needed to deal with a growing community. As the Town has grown, with the population topping 100,000 in April of this year, the size of staff hasn’t grown at the same rate, he said. Ajax has 3.39 staff members for every 1,000 citizens. The average along the lakeshore in Durham is 3.88 staff per 1,000 citizens. To get to the 3.88 average, Ajax would have to add 82 staff mem- bers immediately, Mr. Fleck said. Starting in 2006, one per cent of the tax increase was set aside for hiring new staff, which has enabled the Town to hire 27 new staff. Over the next four years, Mr. Fleck said about 50 new staff will be hired. Top 12 The Town’s top 12 corporate priorities 1. Community safety 2. Environmental initiatives 3. P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 27, 2008 durhamregion.com Fairness of proposed law questioned To the editor: Re: ‘Tough laws meant to keep young drivers safer’, Nov. 19 editorial. While I agree that something needs to be done, I’m a little uneasy with what’s been proposed. Just a short while ago, I read in a Toronto paper about the large number of charges that are laid, versus the number of convictions. Even the street racing laws get less than 50 per cent convic- tions. But what’s being proposed for new drivers would seem apt to follow the same pattern. I have no problem with suspending a license for 30 days for drinking, as long as it’s a conviction for drinking. How would you, as a new driver, feel if the officer suspended your license for 30 days, but when the charge went to court, you were not convicted? Besides potentially having to pay for the impounded vehicle and towing charges, you lost the ability to drive for 30 days, yet were not found guilty? We need a better system. Doug Frith Pickering I played paintball with my son and his pals recently. My younger son, mind you, not the older one. Never the older one. I have done some dumb things in my life; borrowing a friend’s nail gun without the manual, grabbing the spark plug of a lawnmower while it was still running, shoplifting an ice cream bar by sticking it down the front of my pants. But nothing would be as suicidally stupid as volunteer- ing to be the only adult target in a crowd of gun-toting, sharp-shooting, vengeance- filled, shaving-aged boys. I heard no alarm bells, however, when my younger son asked me to play. Besides, this was a small game. Small enough that Dad’s presence was a welcome addition to the meager number of participants. Actu- ally, all the kids seemed not only OK with, but thrilled to have me along. I relaxed and decided to jump in. And it was fun. Until I found myself cowering face down in a matted snarl of scratching, itching, three-foot high elephant grass, mask fogging to near blind- ness with every heave of my burning, mid- dle-aged lungs. I lay there, paralyzed with fear, waiting and listening. Certain that one of the sneaky little buggers would flank me at any second, covering me in more paint than a Jackson Pollock canvas. I understood why my kids would come home from a couple of hours of paintball nearly comatose. It’s the adrenaline. All it takes is to be smacked once by a paintball, at even marginal range, and you’ll do any- thing possible to never repeat the scenario. In the vernacular, it hurts like stink. The fear factor is very real. Which is both the allure and the dread of the game. It’s like hide and seek on steroids. But like any high-stakes scenario it’s also frighteningly revealing. Hence my shame at discovering the aforementioned craven, wind-sucking, 48-year-old scaredy- dad. But thankfully, none of us is beyond redemption. As I lay there in the mud, the pop-pop-pop of CO2 fired projectiles fill- ing the air, I reached down deep and found something I knew no adolescent had. I discovered a priceless commodity that only those of us who have survived to middle-age possess . . . guile. Then, like a snake in the grass, I began to inch my way towards the backs of the unsuspecting 13-year-old enemy. I couldn’t see them from my iniquitous approach, but I could hear them. Hear their weapons discharg- ing, hear their innocent, naive laughter. I grinned a lizard smile inside my plastic mask of death, picturing the surprised looks on their trusting, adolescent faces as my paintballs splattered mercilessly into their midst. I was close now. Close enough to touch them. In a flash I popped up from my hiding place and with a Machiavellian laugh squeezed the trigger. Nothing. Nothing but a loud click. In the brief moment I had to realize I had left the safety on, I was engulfed in a hail of sting- ing paint missiles and, even more hurtful, derisive pubescent laughter. I fell to the ground, a five foot eight inch rainbow palette of humiliation and pain. One more thing to add to the dumb list. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic- writer, saves some of his best lines for his col- umns. Region sets clear direction for recycling in Pickering T he Region of Durham wants to have a clear look at what residents are, or are not, sending to landfill disposal. A pilot project will take place in about 750 households in Clarington and Pickering in January. Each household will be required to use clear garbage bags so crews can see what’s being thrown out. If there are green bin or blue bin materials inside a bag, the entire bag won’t be col- lected. Durham works commissioner Cliff Cur- tis said the project will ensure residents are making full use of the blue and green bin programs. Rather than expand what can be put into the blue bins, he wants the Region to get more “bang for its buck” by getting materials it currently accepts out of the garbage. He makes a good point. Who knows what’s going inside garbage bags? Resi- dents may dutifully place their blue and green bins outside their homes but what if there are more recyclables inside their garbage bags? One way to find out is to replace black and green bags with clear ones. Those who protest such a measure shouldn’t. After all, if they’ve got nothing to hide, using clear bags shouldn’t be that big an inconvenience. If the results from this pilot project indicate too many recyclables are mak- ing their way into the trash it will have a positive impact in that: A) Residents will quickly divert more material to recyclables or risk having their trash left behind and B) The amount of garbage placed curbside should drop as residents make absolutely sure only non-recyclable trash is inside their garbage bags. The general consensus is the majority of residents are making good use of our recy- cling programs. But there’s always room for improvement and using clear garbage bags is a good way to gauge the program’s success. Durham Region wants to increase the targeted diversion rate from landfill dis- posal by 70 per cent by 2010. That’s not going to happen if recyclable materials continue to be placed inside garbage bags. Pickering households selected for this pilot project will be supplied with infor- mation and plastic bags in the new year. We encourage them to understand that recycling isn’t a program you can opt out of anymore. It’s serious business and this latest measure proves the lengths the Region will go to in order to make every- one compliant. The joke’s on this big old paintball dad target Neil Crone/ Enter Laughing By Melissa Mancini mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM — It looks just like any other Durham Region Transit bus. Except it has no exhaust pipe on the back and the sound of the en- gine is barely audible. In fact, the noisiest part of the ride (besides the chatter of those on board) is from the power steering system. Because this bus runs on elec- tricity. The vehicle is one of two that have come to Durham as part of a partnership between the Universi- ty of Ontario Institute of Technolo- gy and Ontario Power Generation. “They have come a long way,” said Greg Rohauer, associate pro- fessor at UOIT. The buses have been rerouted from the Grand Canyon, where they were used to transport hikers from the parking lot to the trails 20 km away. They weren’t used for long when it was determined that much larg- er vehicles were needed for the job. So in 2004, the shuttles were packed up and put away in stor- age. When they were taken out they were in bad shape. It was decided they would be auctioned off for their parts including the 108 bat- teries on board, which are worth about $2,000 each, Dr. Rohrauer said. The coaches were saved from destruction when OPG made a $65,000 donation to help the uni- versity buy them. They have since been refurbished so they can hit the road. The vehicles take two days to charge fully, because the univer- sity doesn’t have the original bat- tery chargers, which would take about three to four hours to reboot the cells, Dr. Rohrauer said. Once charged, the bus can run for 130 to 160 kilometres. Most importantly, the technol- ogy is very green. “They are extremely, extremely clean,” he said. The bus can seat 25 people. Also inside is a laptop that logs all sorts of data including distance, speed and energy charges, graduate stu- dent Pierre Hinse said. So eventually, “I can predict en- ergy consumption before I drive it,” he said. The statistics collected will help Mr. Hinse create a profile of the bus on the computer that will cre- ate a digital model of the bus and show how energy efficient rides are, he said. “(Electric vehicles) are very rare sadly,” Mr. Hinse said. Because the technology is un- common, Mr. Hinse and Dr. Rohrauer are doing outreach to bring the research to local schools and show students the advance- ment that is happening in environ- mentally-friendly vehicle build- ing. The group also wants the buses to be as visible as possible in the community, so residents can see technology that is available. Dr. Rohrauer is hoping to have one of the buses running in a vis- ible route soon, perhaps trans- porting passengers from UOIT’s main campus on Simcoe Street and Conlin Road to the new Fac- ulty of Education downtown. durhamregion.com CANADIAN TIRE PICKERING ONLY DON’T MISS IT OUR 3 BIGGEST DAYS OF SAVINGS FLYER IS IN TODAYS PAPER Store Hours: Mon-Fri 7am-9pm Sat 7am-9pm • Sun 9am-6pm 1735 Pickering Parkway Pickering • 905-686-2308 Quantities are limted to in stock quantity only. PICKERING — The City of Pickering is doing its part to help give homeless animals a home this Christmas. Council declared December the Iams Home 4 the Holidays month Monday night. Iams has been host- ing the worldwide campaign that has resulted in more than two mil- lion pet adoptions since it began in 1999. The campaign has a goal of placing one million animals into happy homes around the world throughout this holiday season. Pickering staff will commit time, resources and energy throughout the season to place animals in lov- ing, life-long homes in the Pickering area. Last year alone, more than 500,000 families took a new pet home through the campaign. Each puppy or kitten adopted through the campaign will go home with an Iams Adoption Starter Kit that contains coupons, food sam- ples, important tips and informa- tion about pet care, training, behav- iour and nutrition. This year, Pickering Animal Ser- vices has housed more than 200 animals and adopted out more than 70 into new homes. But many remain at the shelter, and dona- tions to keep the animals happy and healthy until they’re adopted are also encouraged by Iams. To donate, adopt or for more infor- mation visit www.cityofpickering. com/animals or call 905-683-7575. Problem is, Canadians who might benefit profoundly from psychotherapy—a.k.a. “talk” therapy—aren’t even considering it. Yet, evidence from brain imaging research suggests that one form of talk therapy known as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, or CBT, produces changes in the brain similar to those produced by anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medications. CBT emphasizes the idea that our thoughts (cognitions) affect how we feel (emotions). Treatment lasts an average of 16 sessions (includes “homework”), and involves changing negative patterns of thinking—and behaving—using slow, gradual steps. “CBT involves active collaboration between patient and therapist,” says Dr. Direnfeld, a registered psychologist who’s been practicing CBT since the early ’90s, and who is now the clinical director of the Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Ajax, Ontario. continued on page 11 SHAPE UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS New, Irresistible, Radiant This holiday season, get in shape with the U Weight Loss TM doctor-formulated, lifestyle-based weight reduction programs which are tailored to your needs and circumstances. However, when it comes to weight loss, isn’t it really just the amount of calories consumed that makes or breaks your success? Answer: Many people think that losing weight is a simple calculation of eating less calories but, in fact, this is not entirely true. Not all calories are created equal. Eating nutrient dense food, which is how I refer to food that is packed with lots of vitamins and minerals, is absolutely key to weight loss and optimal health. Although there are many reasons why, the one my clients fi nd most interesting, is how eating nutrient dense food curbs cravings. Our body makes millions of cells every single minute, but the only way to get the material for those cells is through the food you eat. If you eat meals that are processed, fried, microwaved, or low in fruits and vegetables, your body will not have enough vitamins and minerals to make the cells it requires. This will send out a message (craving) for yet more food, even though you may have already consumed plenty of calories for the day. This is one of the reasons we have such a huge obesity epidemic in North America, We are overfed and undernourished. At UWeight Loss, it is not all about calorie counting, balance and health is the cornerstone of our program. Take Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, characterized by anxious thoughts and repetitive behaviours that are meant to reduce the anxiety. In a study that compared CBT to Prozac, changes in the brain were essentially identical. Dr. Direnfeld warns, however, that a crucial element of CBT is a patient’s motivation to change. Patients must believe, unquestionably, that change is achievable. “When my patients—even those who have suffered for years or decades—understand that they can change their life, it’s like an epiphany,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “All of a sudden, life holds exciting new prospects for the future.” For more information about CBT or the Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, call 905-427-2007 or email info@ccbt.ca. The Trojans downed Fenelon Falls 43-6, but lost to Toronto’s St. Michael’s College Kerry Blues 30-15 in the semifinal last Saturday. Trojans punted from Ontario Bowl Pine Ridge senior boys’ squad earns best-ever OFSAA result in school history PICKERING — The Pine Ridge Secondary School Pumas played exceptionally well at the provin- cial senior boys’ volleyball play- downs in Barrie recently, finish- ing fourth in Ontario. The No. 10-seeded Pumas qualified for bronze-medal match at the 16-team Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) ‘AAAA’ championships where they played No. 2-seeded and defend- ing provincial cham- pion Glebe Collegiate Institute of Ottawa. The Pumas lost in the bronze- medal game 15-25, 15-25, giving Pine Ridge the ‘antique’ bronze medal. The Pumas’ fourth-place fin- ish at OFSAA represented an improvement of six places over their seeding for the tour- nament. Moreover, it was the best-ever fin- ish for a Pine Ridge Pumas team in school history at OFSAA. The Pumas opened against No. 7 Rick Hansen Secondary School of Mississauga with a 24-26, 26- 24, 15-7 win. Pine Ridge then suited up against No. 4 Saunders Secondary School of London, which has captured the OFSAA ‘AAAA’ championship in four of the past five years. In two close games, the Pumas lost 20-25, 16- 25. In their final pool game, Pine Ridge played No. 13 Westdale from Ottawa and won 25-22, 21- 25, 15-9, putting them in second in Pool ‘D’, which allowed the Pickering’s Pumas fourth at volleyball provincials Pickering High juniors downed in semifinal AJAX — The Pickering High School Trojans’ quest to become the first Durham junior football team to capture the Ontario Re- gional Junior Football Champion- ship ended Saturday afternoon at St. Michael’s College in Toronto. Playing the independent school champion St. Michael’s College Kerry Blues, the Trojans fell 30-15 to the hosts. The Trojans found themselves in difficulty immediately fol- lowing the opening kickoff, as they took over at their own 10-yard line. Playing under three-down football rules for the opening half, Pickering was unable to pick up a first down and punted. Steve Triveri’s punt return gave St. Michael’s excellent field pos- session at the Pickering 26-yard line. Six plays later, quarterback Mike Harvey called his own number from the three- yard line to put St. Mike’s on top 6-0. Khaleel Wash- ington’s convert attempt failed. St. Mike’s sec- ond major covered 70 yards and nine plays with running back Akeel Lynch providing the highlight with a 29-yard screen pass reception. The drive ended with Harvey taking the ball on a one-yard keeper. The Kerry Blues scored once more before half time. Facing third and 17, the Kerry Blues executed a fake punt with a direct snap to Lynch, who barely gained enough yardage for a first down. Lynch picked up eight more yards set- ting up Harvey’s third touchdown Hockey Monarchs reign over Celtics PICKERING — The St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Mon- archs varsity girls’ hockey team opened its season with a victory over the Sinclair Secondary School Celtics of Whitby on Monday after- noon. The Monarchs scored its first Lake Ontario Second- ary School Athletics (LOSSA) league victory of the 2008-09 season with a 5-2 victory over the Celtics at the Pickering Recreation Complex. Shannon Stoneburgh contrib- uted a two-goal game, including an empty netter, for the Monarchs. Katy Arathoon, Tiffany Allen and Jessica Vella netted the other St. Mary goals. Drawing assists for St. Mary were Michelle Sabourin, Krista Har- ris and Stoneburgh. The Monarchs squad features a mixture of senior and junior players, with seven Grade 9 players in the lineup. The team, however, lost four veteran players from last year’s team to graduation. Visiting Santa Claus won’t cost you a penny Oshawa Centre offering free videos, Pickering Town Centre offers loot bags By Stefanie Swinson sswinson@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Brooke Callahan was excited to meet Santa Claus. The three-year-old Bowmvanille girl wore a nice outfit and had her hair done perfectly for the special occasion. “She already wrote a letter to Santa,” said her mom, Valerie Callahan. “Now all she has to do is tell Santa what she wants for Christmas.” It seemed easy enough, that is until Old Saint Nick asked little Brooke to come and sit beside him. “I don’t want to!” screamed Brooke. She had chick- ened out. And thanks to a new service from the Osha- wa Centre the tears and the hysterics were all caught on video at no charge. From now until Christmas Eve, parents can bring their children to meet Santa and have the whole experience filmed. It won’t cost you a penny. All you have to do is give one of Santa’s balle- rina princesses your e-mail address. Within 72 hours of your Santa visit you’ll receive an e-mail that will direct you to your video and you can send that video to anyone you please. Ms. Callahan was glad to find out about the new program. “I do find it quite expensive just for Santa pictures. Of course we wouldn’t turn it down because it’s Santa pictures but I was shocked actually that it was free,” she said. If you’re travelling west to meet Santa, the Pickering Town Centre is giving out free loot bags for kids and parents. newsdurhamregion.com Watch a video at newsdurhamregion.com THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 27, 2008 PAGE 13 A/Pdurhamregion.com durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 14 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 27, 2008 A Fresh alternative! The Pumas played No. 5 Ursuline College of Chatham in the quarter- final and won 30-28, 19-25, 15- 6. This advanced the Pine Ridge seniors to the semifinal against No.3-seeded Birchmount Col- legiate Institute of Scarborough, which ended up being the even- tual OFSAA champions. Pine Ridge lost 20-25, 12-25, but still earned a berth in the bronze-medal con- test. To get to OFSAA, the Pumas fin- ished as Durham Region champs in Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) play this sea- son. In the championship final, Pine Ridge defeated the Ajax High School Rams in straight sets on Nov. 13. The Pumas’ overall season match record was 42-6 with an out- standing record of 92 sets won and only 18 lost. Three of the team’s match losses came at OFSAA to the eventual champions from Birch- mount C.I., bronze medallists and last year’s champions Glebe C.I., No. 4 seeded and previous OFSAA champion Saunders S.S. Two of the team’s other three losses came to OFSAA quarter-finalists Grand River C.I (Kitchener) and Chatham Kent S.S. (‘AAA’ ‘antique’ bronze medallists). In addition to a fourth-place finish at OFSAA, the Pumas won three tournaments (Durham Col- lege, Seneca College, Ajax HS) and made it to the semifinals in the McMaster University and the Uni- versity of Guelph senior boys’ tour- naments. Team members are Craig Dixon, Eric Fox, Qassim Wahab, Janoi Wright, Nathaniel Virgo, Adam Cor- less (captain), Matthew Henchey, Jamal Laane and Daniel Popovic. Mark O’Neill coaches the Pumas’ senior boys’ squad, assisted by Jen- nifer Bogart, George Burford and Jennifer O’Neill. The LOSSA champion Pumas were seeded 10th entering the provincials. ✦ Pine from page 12 Pine Ridge ends stellar court season of the game from three yards out. Washington’s second con- vert put St. Mike’s up 20-0. In the second half, the Trojans looked more comfortable play- ing four-down football. A failed on-side kick to open the second half gave the Kerry Blues mid- field possession. However Sha- kir Lewis, with a tackle on Jelani Daniel, helped the Trojans force the Kerry Blues to punt without gaining a first down. Stobbart then engineered a 12-play, 82-yard drive for the Trojans’ first major of the game. Stobbart earned the touchdown on a six-yard keeper following an errant snap exchange. Taylor Eskins, with the con- vert, reduced the St. Mike’s lead to 20-7. Pickering unsuccessfully tried another on-side kick. This time, the Kerry Blues made Pickering pay, with Lynch demonstrating his skills by picking up 36 yards on two carries, including a 30- yard touchdown run on the final play of the third quarter. The convert once again made it a 20- point (27-7) game. The Trojans opened the fourth quarter with a seven-play drive covering 54 yards. But, facing fourth and 10 from the Kerry Blues 10-yard line, a pitch to Eskins followed by a pass to Tristan Clough in the end zone was incomplete, resulting in a turnover. The Kerry Blues responded with a drive that put them first- and-10 at the Pickering 11-yard line, including a 58-yard run by Lynch, which ended with a touchdown-saving tackle by a diving Denver Wright. Although Wright saved a touchdown, he exited the game with a broken finger. St. Mike’s settled for a 22-yard field goal by Washington. With 2:28 remaining, Stobbart again took the Trojans 67 yards in seven plays against a Kerry Blue defence operating in pre- vent mode. Demetrius McFarquhar scored a touchdown on a one-yard run. Stobbart tossed his third suc- cessful pass of the final drive to Eskins for a two-point convert to close the scoring. The Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) cham- pion Trojans earned their way to the Ontario Bowl semifinals after posting a dominating 43-6 victory over the Fenelon Falls Falcons, the Central Ontario Sec- ondary School (COSSA) champs, in the quarter-final game recent- ly. ✦ Trojans from page 12 Trojans fall short of Bowl final Just minutes from MARKHAM Just minutes fromJust minutes from PICKERINGPICKERING SHEPPARD AVE.SHEPPARD AVE.
