Goal lowered in
‘uncertain economic times’
By Keith Gilligan
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — Seven local companies are setting the
pace for the United Way of Ajax-Pickering-Uxbridge.
The organization kicked off the 2008 fundraising
campaign yesterday, announcing the goal of $1.75 mil-
lion. The campaign runs to the end of the year and the
money raised funds more than 50 programs offered by
29 agencies.
Last year, $1.73 million was raised, the second year
in a row the agency failed to reach its target of $1.9 mil-
lion.
“It’s (the goal) a reflection of the current economy.
We still need to build on what we’ve raised. We look
at $1.75 million as the beginning and we want to push
beyond that,” said John G. Smith, the 2008 campaign
chairman, of the target this year.
The seven companies -- Areva NP Canada, Hubbell
Canada, Messier-Dowty, Nokia, Ontario Power Gen-
eration, Purdue Pharma and Veridian -- are serving as
Pacesetters and pledging to raise more than $275,000.
Mr. Smith praised the “ultimate group of local com-
panies that help time and again,” adding employees
with the companies do such things as mentor youths
or deliver Meals on Wheels to seniors.
“The need for this support continues to grow,” he
said.
The companies have “committed to raise $275,000
for the 2008 campaign. I can’t think of anything better
to celebrate than that,” Mr. Smith said.
“We plan to do our part to make this campaign a suc-

cess,” said Jim Gillespie of Hubbell.
Last year, Messier-Dowty employees con-
tributed $52,000 and the goal this year is
$60,000, said Barry Wohl. “We encourage
other companies to participate and support
the United Way.”
“We take our social responsibility very
serious,” Carla Carmichael of Nokia said.
“Nokia matches any donations made lo-
cally.”
The goal for the 40 employees at the Ajax
site is $20,000, she said.
“We’re committed to enhancing the lives
of the people and communities in which we
live. We’re able to do that,” said Don Terry of
OPG. “The personal contributions are what
we are so proud of.”
Noting that one-in-three people will use
service funded by the United Way, he said
“there’s a pretty good chance a family mem-
ber, neighbour or co-worker is touched by
the United Way. I’m pleased to say the Unit-
ed Way is my way and I encourage everyone
to make it your way.”
“Our employees rally around the United
Way each year,” Randy Steffan of Purdue
Pharma said. Last year, the company sur-
passed $580,000 in contributions to the
United Way over a five-year period.
“We’re pretty pleased with that pretty sig-
nificant amount,” Mr. Steffan said.
“Why get involved as a corporate citizen?
We feel it’s important to help organizations
that strengthen lives and neighbourhoods.
Our employees said if we’re going to help,
help the communities in which they live
and work,” he said. “Our campaign team is
pumped and ready to go.”
Local mayors also praised the United Way
and it’s agencies.
“Municipal politicians always talk about
hard service, like roads and sewers. As we
grow, we need the social infrastructure, the
soft services,” said Ajax Mayor Steve Parish.
For “people on the edge, it’s a very un-
pleasant place to live. The United Way does
so much to put that infrastructure in place.”
“It’s very unfortunate that the senior levels
of government allow the gap in social ser-
vices,” Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan said.
Edna Klazek, the outgoing executive di-
rector of the United Way, has seen “so much
change” in her 10 years running the organi-
zation. “What you do allows us to do what
we do,” she said.
“We know these are uncertain economic
times. The programs funded by the United
Way are more vital than ever. The servic-
es protect the most vulnerable,” Mr. Smith
said.
This Sunday, Sept. 14, the fourth annual
Bon Appetit culinary festival is being held

It runs from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and ad-
mission is $15 for adults, $8 for youths 16
and under, free for children five and under. A

Sonic and Spike
happy at home
By Kristen Calis

PICKERING — Earna
Clark is pretty sure miracles
happen - animal miracles
anyway.
The Pickering grand-
mother was devastated in
July when she noticed that
Sonic, the hedgehog she
looks after for her grand-
sons, six-year-old Grady and
eight-year-old Taggart, went
missing while she was away.
The neighbour who fed him
must have unhooked the
cage by accident, and Ms.
Clark was horrified when
the little guy was gone upon
her return. Sonic had quite
a personality and was well-
loved by the boys, who took
him on walks on his leash
and played with him like a
toy “and he never raised his
spikes to (them).
“I did not think he’d sur-
vive,” she said in an inter-
view.
About 40 days after he
went missing, Pickering
resident Bill Nelson was
going to check on the water
pump in his backyard pond
when he noticed something
caught in the chicken wire
he keeps there so birds can
climb out of the water if
they’re trapped. At first he
thought it was a dead rat,
but then his wife, Barb, said,
“It’s alive. The eyes are mov-
ing.”
The small animal was
gripping the wire, half sub-
merged and upside down in
the water before Mr. Nelson
pulled him out. He put him
in a box, called the vet and
was eventually directed to
the Toronto Wildlife Foun-
dation, which couldn’t help
since hedgehogs are do-
mesticated in Canada. But
he found out hedgehogs
like veggies and cat food.
“He ate for 10 minutes
straight,” Mr. Nelson said.
“He didn’t stop.”
In touch with Pickering
Animal Services that Mon-
day, Mr. Nelson found out
someone had called the
department more than a
month earlier reporting a
lost hedgehog.
Meanwhile Ms. Clark
bought a replacement for
the boys, another hedgehog
they named Spike. Despite
the new pet, they were re-
lieved and shocked when
they heard Sonic had been
found.
“They were ecstatic,” she
said. “We were pretty excit-
ed. We were just jumping.”
Mr. Nelson said it could
have been the sanctuary of
his backyard that attracted
Sonic to the couple’s resi-
dence.
They frequently see
skunks, foxes, raccoons,
birds and rabbits. But it
was a real trek for the ani-
mal: the two homes are on
separate streets in the same
neighbourhood, but he also
had to go through a school-
yard to get to the Nelson’s
place. Although Ms. Nelson
renamed Sonic Esther after
the swimmer, Esther Wil-
liams, the couple was happy
to return him to his family.
“It was all around heart-
warming for them to get it
back,” Mr. Nelson said.
In fact the boys will soon
reunite with Sonic for the
first time since they live
in Stouffville and will also
meet the Nelsons. Mean-
while, Sonic is back at home
but with a new friend in the
mix.
“The two hedgehogs are
cohabitating like they be-
long together,” Ms. Clark
said. “They’re so happy.”

Trustee proposes
investigating
environmentally
friendly schools
By Crystal Crimi
ccrimi@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — The public school board is
looking into what it takes to build a green
school.
A mild, generic investigation into the con-
struction costs, ongoing savings, and what
classifies a school as “green,” will be under-
taken by Durham District School Board staff,
following its Sept. 2 standing committee
meeting.
“I commend your effort to make all
schools more environmental all around,”
said Student Trustee Ian Chislett of Henry
Street High School, during the meeting.
The investigation was proposed after
Whitby Trustee John Dolstra suggested look-
ing into what can be done for the Whitby
Shores area, in light of it being a sensitive
conservation area and in line for a new
school.
About five years ago, the board wanted to
build an environmentally friendly school,
but the cost was phenomenal – more than
$14 million, Trustee Dolstra said.
Although the board has limited funding,
maybe it’s time to approach the Province for
more funds for this kind of thing, he said.
Oshawa Trustee Michael Barrett was quick
to throw caution to the wind.
Although Whitby Shores is a unique com-
munity, so is every other school community,
he said.
Whether it’s built in north Ajax, Seaton
in Pickering, or Taunton Road in Oshawa,
there is lots of opportunity for green schools,
and priority shouldn’t go to one that sits in a
marsh, Mr. Barrett said.
He would also be reluctant to build a
green school that takes money away from
renovations.
“There are children in my communities
that do not have a gym to call home,” Trustee
Barrett said.
But if it’s something the government is
pursuing, he supports looking at more than
just Whitby.
“I didn’t come and ask the board for extra
money,” Trustee Dolstra said. He suggested
asking the government.
Oshawa Trustee Kathleen Hopper was
leery even about that.
“You may end up with more money for
your green schools but less money for your
programs,” she said, and added there’s still a
limited amount of money overall for every-
thing.
Pickering Trustee Sherry Croteau asked
Trustee Dolstra what makes the difference
between a $10 million school and a $16 mil-
lion school.
“What is it that makes that difference and
what makes it environmentally appeasing
to the schools we’ve built before,” Trustee
Croteau said.
She’d be happy to see information brought
forward, as long as its generic and could
be applied to all Durham schools or new
schools.
“I think it would benefit our board to take
a look at this and see at this stage in the
game, what it would cost,” Ajax Trustee Lisa
Hill said.

School board looks into going green
DURHAM — Two years’ worth of Parents
Reaching Out grants have been helping im-
migrant parents get more involved in the
school community.
With more than $30,000 provided over the
last two years, the Durham District School
Board has been able to reach out to im-
migrant parents by encouraging their in-
volvement in school community councils, at
events and at schools, heard those attending
its Sept. 2 standing committee meeting.
“One of the things I have noticed... is we
are finding the (school community councils)
are becoming more representative of the
parent body,” said Ajax superintendent John
Bowyer.
Mr. Bowyer, along with some of his guests,
reviewed projects the Durham District
School Board has been able to support with
the funding. In June 2007, an event was
held to reach out to English-speaking black
community members with keynote speak-
ers. Muslim communities were targeted the
following year. The days included coffee,
speakers, lunch and break-out sessions.
The board also holds dual language
events, making books available in English
and another languages, and provides trans-
lated welcome folders. “It’s very exciting to
see some of the resources that have been
generated by some of these funds,” Uxbridge
Trustee Joe Allin said.

OnStar call
centre doubles
call volume
By Ian Caldwell
icaldwell@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — He is one
of the reassuring voices
people heard when they
were scrambling recently
to get out of the path of
Hurricane Gustav along
the Gulf Coast.
Clayton Guest, 31, of
Bowmanville said most of
the calls he received from
the hurricane-affected area
were from people looking
for gasoline or a place to
stay as they fled the storm.
“There were no hotels
available in Louisiana,
Texas, or Arkansas,” Mr.
Guest said after wrapping
up his day at the OnStar
call centre in Oshawa.
“We’ve been giving peo-
ple hotel information for
Nashville . . . a lot of places
in Tennessee,” he said.
“For most people,
it would be about 250
miles. A three-hour drive,
maybe.”
OnStar is a satellite-
based navigation, commu-
nication and emergency
response service that’s
available on GM vehicles
for subscribers across
North America.
The Oshawa call centre
is operated by Aditya Birla
Minacs at its complex on
Colonel Sam Drive and it
was one of three in North
America that fielded thou-
sands of calls on the La-
bour Day weekend.
“We’ve seen a substan-
tial increase in our call vol-
ume,” said Chris LaLonde,
an OnStar manager in Os-
hawa.
The company does not
release specific numbers,
but Mr. LaLonde said call
volume Sunday was dou-
ble the normal volume and
OnStar brought in 100 to
200 more advisers each
day over the weekend to
make sure the calls were
answered.
“I just had one before
I came down in New Or-
leans,” said Sheryl Kar-
ouac, 44, of Oshawa.
“All the phone lines are
down. And he needed to
touch base with his family,
so I made about six phone
calls for him.”
Both Ms. Karouac and
Mr. Guest fielded calls
during Hurricane Ka-
trina and said the lessons
learned then helped pre-
pare advisers who received
specialized crisis training.
The company said the
extra shifts and extra hours
that OnStar advisers put
in were voluntary and Mr.
LaLonde said the employ-
ees at the Oshawa call cen-
tre stepped up to the chal-
lenge.
“I think a lot of these
guys walk away at the end
of the day going, you know,
we made a difference to
tens of thousands of peo-
ple that are part of the GM
family,” Mr. LaLonde said.
“Minacs is proud of its
agents,” Sandra Smith, ex-
ecutive vice-president of
sales, said in a statement.

Divorce and Family Law Seminar
Get Your Free New Divorce Legal Book at the Seminar
If you’re getting (or thinking about getting) separated or divorced, this could be a very
important message for you.
Many spouses don’t understand what their legal rights are and how to protect them
in their separation or divorce.
A new seminar called Everything You Must Know About Divorce and Separation
But Are Afraid To Ask will help you solve this problem. This seminar will give
spouses the key information they need to understand and protect their legal rights in
their separation or divorce. This information will help both married and non-married
or common-law spouses who are getting or thinking about getting separated or
divorced.
This seminar will focus on four key issues in divorce and separation: child custody
and access, child support, spousal support, and property issues.
Thomas O’Malley, an experienced divorce and family law lawyer, is
conducting this seminar. This seminar is based on his new book, Canadian
Divorce and Separation Made Easier, which is available at Chapters or go to
www.Canadiandivorcelegaladvice.com. This seminar is only $45 (a tremendous
value since Thomas O’Malley normally charges $300 an hour for his legal advice)
and includes a free copy of his new book, Canadian Divorce and Separation Made
Easier, but there are a limited number of seats. Seating is reserved. To register for

Resident prefers bottled
over tap water
To the editor:
Re: No plans to ban bottled water in Dur-
ham Region, News, Aug. 22
Let me help you understand why people
do not drink tap water. Would you lick your
toilet bowl after using bleach to clean it?
What do I have against tap water, you
ask? One word: everything. An opinion
coming from someone who drinks six to
eight 500-millilitre bottles of spring water
daily (you can check my recycling box).
I may not be university-educated (just
college) but I can still tell the difference
between tap water and bottled spring
water. Tap water is gritty, smells bad and
the taste is awful. Some days you can smell
the chlorine.
I’d like to think of myself as a bottled
water connoisseur. I can taste -- and in
the case of tap water, smell -- the differ-
ence. Bottled spring water tastes clean and
smooth.
The only thing tap water is good for is the
toilet. It all comes from the same place.

M other Teresa, who was not only a
tireless worker for the underpriv-
ileged but also a heck of a danc-
er, has been quoted as saying “I was once
asked why I don’t participate in anti-war
demonstrations. I said that I will never do
that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace
rally, I’ll be there.” I love that philosophy.
Here was a woman who knew where her
priorities and more importantly, her enor-
mous powers lay.
We all spend an inordinate amount of
our precious lives loudly and proudly
decrying what we are against. We are anti-
gun, anti-crime, anti-freeze, Auntie Em.
In the newspapers, television and radio
broadcasts we are warned ad nauseum
that we must be vigilant and fight against
global warming, clear-cutting, pollution,
poverty and cancer. I am sure someone
somewhere is even promoting the Fight
Against Fighting. We’re kept very busy. A
person could easily spend his entire life
fighting against stuff.
But I wonder if our time, thoughts and
energies might be better spent if, like
Mother Teresa, we focused more on those
things we are for, rather than against.
This is not as simple as it sounds. Many
of us have grown quite fond of fighting
against things, to the point that we define
ourselves by what we hate. “I’m anti-
meat,” “I’m anti-fur,” to the point that we
may eventually be hard-pressed to eluci-
date what we are “for” at all.
Think about that one for a minute. What,
in fact, are you for? This is a very impor-
tant question because, I think, when we
answer it, we answer an even larger, even
more paramount query; “What are we
here for?”
Interesting stuff and definitely worth
thinking about. Worth thinking about
because isn’t it true that what we think
about, what we focus on, what we dwell
on . . . is what we get? What, in fact, shows
up in our days?
More to the point, isn’t this why the
worrier always seems to have stuff to
worry about, the hater always someone or
something to hate and the joyful person
constantly finds things to rejoice over. The
world that each of us wakes up to is, in my
experience, a perfect reflection of where
our heads and hearts are at. I see this in
my own life daily. If I focus on love and
kindness, laughter and light, if I strive to
spread joy, not anger, frustration or fear,
if I do my damnedest to be for peace, for
health, for freedom even when the glass
is looking decidedly half-empty, I am
rewarded again and again and again by
more of the things that bring me love, joy,
kindness, peace, health and freedom.
I can’t help but believe that Mother
Teresa understood this principle com-
pletely. Why else would she have uttered
those words? She fully grasped the power
of human thought, of consciousness. She
was completely aware of the magic at her
fingertips and the enormous responsibil-
ity that came with it.
The onus to be positive, to be for and not
against. All that and a killer foxtrot. She
was the real deal.
Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-
writer, saves some of his best lines for his col-
umns.
Grim anniversary is a reminder of why Canadian troops are fighting
T oday marks a solemn anniversary in
world history: it’s been exactly seven
years since four hijacked planes
plunged into the World Trade Center
towers in New York City, the Pentagon in
Washington, and into a farm field in Penn-
sylvania.
As the world watched in horror on that
sunny Sept. 11 morning, 19 al-Qaida ter-
rorists took control of two planes out of
New York and two out of Boston, and
turned those westbound airliners around
on a suicide mission designed to punish
Western democracies.
Thousands died in those searing images
that burned themselves on our brains. We
tried in vain to contemplate why innocent
people were sacrificed for reasons we still
find difficult, if not impossible, to under-
stand.
Our world changed on that day. Whether
we like it or not, we were collectively at war
with terrorists who were out to destroy our
way of life, and Canada was not immune
to the consequences of 9-11.
The aftermath of the attacks was to
declare war on al-Qaida’s supporters, the
Taliban in Afghanistan. Our role in the fall
of 2001 was limited to the efforts of the
secretive Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2), a group
of highly trained operatives who helped to
quickly defeat the Taliban and end the war
in Afghanistan by December 2001.
If only it had been that easy to solve the
problem. A war that took weeks and result-
ed in few casualties also had little follow-
up, as U.S. leaders began to heavily focus
on Iraq and its outlaw dictator, Saddam
Hussein. The reconstruction and salvaging
of Afghanistan became an afterthought
and the Taliban began to rebuild.
Since 2002, Canadians have fought and
died in Afghanistan in an effort to prevent
the Taliban from regaining control in
Afghanistan. To this point, 97 Canadian
soldiers and one diplomat have given
their lives in this effort. Canada has been
a leading nation since 2005 in the battle in
Afghanistan.
Canadians have done much of the heavi-
est fighting in the most dangerous part of
the country, Kandahar province. It’s worth
realizing, seven years later, why we are
in Afghanistan and what our purpose is
there.
Every time you see another body come
down the Highway of Heroes, remember
those images of seven years ago, take a
minute and realize what we are fighting
for.

Wishmakers to
parade through Ajax
AJAX — Kelly McLaren knows first hand
about the good things done by the Children’s
Wish Foundation.
Her daughter Madison was diagnosed
with kidney disease five years ago and had
to have both kidneys removed. Ms. McLaren
donated one of her kidneys to her daughter.
Now 10, Madison’s wish was to go on
a Disney cruise and “we’ll never be able
to thank the Children’s Wish Foundation
enough. It brought our family back together,”
Ms. McLaren said to Ajax council on Mon-
day.
Going on the cruise gave her daughter the
chance to “replace memories of the hospi-
tal” with fun ones, she said.
In addition to being a “wish mom,” Ms.
McLaren is also the chairwoman of the foun-
dation’s Wishmaker Parade. The event is on
Saturday, Oct. 18, starting at the St. Andrew’s
Community Centre, on Exeter Road in Ajax.
Registration starts at 10 a.m. and the parade
gets underway at 11 a.m.
“I hope you can participate or pledge
walkers. You can challenge Pickering on
who can raise the most money,” Ms. McLar-
en said.
“We’ll see what we can do to challenge
Pickering,” Mayor Steve Parish said. “It’s not
much of a challenge, but we’ll see what we
can do.”
Ward 2 local Councillor Renrick Ashby
said he’s been a member of the parade plan-
ning committee for three years.
“I see the impact it has on lives,” he said.
For more on the parade, visit www.child-
renswish.ca.

Pickering women
off to national
selection camp
Forwards Ashley Riggs
and Jennifer Wakefield
among 41 in Calgary
for evaluation camp
PICKERING — Two Pickering
women are two of the top 41 female
hockey players in Canada vying for
spots on the national team at the
first National Women’s Team camp
of the 2008-09 season.
Forwards Ashley Riggs, 23, (Ni-
agara University) and Jennifer
Wakefield, 19,
(University of
New Hamp-
shire) were
both named
to the evalu-
ation camp
at Calgary’s
Father David
Bauer Olym-
pic Arena from
Sept. 17 to 21.
The camp
will be used to determine which
athletes will be part of the group
that will work toward the 2009 IIHF
World Women’s Championship
and Olympic centralization.
In February 2009, 22 players
will be selected to play for Canada
at the 2009 IIHF World Women’s
Championship. In the summer of
2009, up to 30 athletes will move
to Calgary as part of centralization
to train and work toward the 2010
Winter Olympics in Vancouver,
BC.
The September camp is the first
of several that Hockey Canada will
hold throughout the year. The camp
roster includes four goaltenders, 15
defencemen and 22 forwards.
“The week will be an evaluation
of players who are working towards
the 2009 IIHF World Women’s
Championship and final Olympic
centralization roster,” says Melody
Davidson, head coach of the na-
tional women’s team. “It’s there-
fore an important week for these
players as we will be selecting our
player pool as we look ahead to the
next two years.”
At the September evaluation
camp, the players will be divided
into two teams – Team Red and
Team White. The two teams will
face midget ‘AAA’ teams from the
Calgary area in a tournament, with
each team playing four games.
The midget ‘AAA’ teams are Cal-
gary Flames and UFA Bisons. Fol-
lowing a round-robin, the top two
teams will play on Sunday, as will
the teams that finish in third and
fourth.
One other player, Natalie Spoon-
er, 17, (Ohio State University) was
also invited to camp. The Scarbor-
ough forward is a former member
of the Ajax-Pickering-based Dur-
ham Junior Lightning women’s
hockey team.

Pickering’s Jennifer Wakefield is among 41 invitees to the first national wom-
en’s hockey team evaluation camp in Calgary this month. The University of
New Hampshire star joins fellow Pickering player Ashley Riggs, who attends
Niagara University of Niagara Falls, N.Y., on the national team’s camp roster.
School sailing championship coming to Whitby
Provincial event
expected to draw
125 to Whitby Yacht
Club; several to
compete from
Frenchman’s Bay
in Pickering
By Brian McNair
bmcnair@durhamregion.com
WHITBY — It’s been quite a
year for the Whitby Yacht Club.
A little over a month after
hosting the prestigious Lake
Yacht Racing Association (LYRA)
regatta, the local club will wel-
come the Ontario High School
Sailing Championships to the
shores of Whitby this weekend.
Mind you, the two events are
as different as can be, says Pat
Cahill, the race organizer who
also runs the Whitby club’s sail-
ing school during the summer.
Whereas the LYRA event was
for much larger keelboats with
big crews, the high school cham-
pionships involves dinghies, pri-
marily individual single-handed
boats.
Cahill expects the event will
attract about 125 high school
athletes from across Ontario, in-
cluding eight from the host club
and another eight or so from
the Frenchman’s Bay club in
Pickering.
“It’s a good regatta for the
kids,” Cahill says. “Most of them
usually end up at regattas over
the summer where there’s a lot
of people who are older, so this
is one where they can come and
have a much better chance to
win.”
Of the eight who sail out of
Whitby in the summer, Alea
Frauts will represent Trafalgar
Castle School, Devon Gilbert,
Cameron Wood and Natalie Sel-
kirk will sail for Henry Street
High School, Liam Williams
and Aaron Babier will represent
Sinclair Secondary School, and
Phillip Brickell will compete for
Clarington Central.
The racing is expected to run
from about 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Saturday and 8 a.m. till 2 p.m.
Sunday, followed by an awards
ceremony.
Although not sanctioned by
the Ontario Federation of School
Athletic Associations (OFSAA),
the provincial championships
have been held for at least the
last 30 years, says Cahill.
“We thought it was just a nice
regatta for them to be able to
represent their high school in a
sport that they’ve practised,” he
explains.

Junior Lightning
among best at big
U.S. tourney
DURHAM — Playing many
of the best women’s teams in the
U.S., the Durham Junior Lightning
fared well at the North American
Hockey Academy (NAHA) 2008
Labor Day Tournament in Burling-
ton, Vt. last weekend.
The tournament featured 27
teams playing in five divisions,
consisting main-
ly of U.S. teams,
with several Ca-
nadian squads
also in the mix.
The Junior
Lightning played well, despite it
being early in the season, earning
their way to the semifinal before
falling to Assabet (Concord,
Mass.) in the semifinal 2-0. Assa-
bet went on to capture the tour-
nament championship.
The Junior Lightning advanced
to the semis after downing host
North American Hockey Academy
‘White’ in the quarter-finals 5-4 in
an extremely challenging contest.
In pool play, the Junior Light-
ning finished atop their division
after recording victories over Pa-
cific Steelers Blue (6-1) and Team
Alaska (8-0) and toughed out a tie
against Assabet (2-2).
Durham’s Alannah Wakefield
was named to the all-tournament
team.
Both the Durham Junior Light-
ning and the Lightning midget ‘AA’s
will compete in the Stoney Creek
tournaments -- the midgets in
the Midget Showcase event from
Sept. 12 to 14 and the juniors in
the Stoney Creek University Show-
case on Sept. 19 to 21.
Greenley turns in

AJAX — The Ajax Aquatic
Club was small, but mighty
in the pool at the Swimming/
Natation Canada’s Age Group
Nationals in Calgary.
Although still considered
a relatively small club, AAC
finished ninth overall — the

In other Ajax Aquatic Club
news, 10-year-old Cassidy
Blackwin closed out the 2008
Junior Provincial Long Course
Championships in Thunder
Bay in July with five medals,
four of them gold.
Blackwin won gold in the
50-, 200-, and 100-metre free-
style races and picked up a
bronze in the 50m butterfly.
Blackwin’s best event, howev-
er, was the 400m free, where
she shattered her own club
record by 10 seconds on her
way to an impressive 5:21.43
