Sandra Gutierrez-Aldana ad- mits she went too far when she berated the ref, a 14-year-old girl, and punched the child’s dad when he attempted to intervene, de- fence lawyer Edward Sapiano told Ontario Court Justice Joseph De Filippis Monday in Oshawa. Mr. Sapiano said the Toronto woman became upset after two youngsters were hurt during the under-eight boys’ game and ap- proached the young ref after the match -- which her son’s team won -- to express her displeasure with the officiating. “My client recognizes it was in- appropriate of her to express her views to a 14-year-old girl,” Mr. Sapiano said. “She’s an emotional person.” The judge heard that the dispute escalated when the young refer- ee’s father intervened and pushed away the hand of Ms. Gutierrez- Aldana, 40, as she wagged a finger at the girl. The woman responded by punching the girl’s dad in the chest, court heard. At that point a Durham cop, homi- cide Detective Tom Dingwall, who was at the Pickering tournament to watch his son play, stepped in and arrested the woman. Ms. Gutierrez-Aldana pleaded guilty on the morning her trial was to begin, a little more than a year after the confrontation on the soccer pitch. Several witness- es, including Det. Dingwall, were told their testimony wouldn’t be needed. Then there are those lessons that can only be taught at a patient’s bedside. Like how to talk to a person who is dying or how to tell family members their loved one has passed away. It’s this kind of practical wisdom Anne Berenschot passes along to nursing student who job-shadow her, as she does her rounds on 6F, the palliative care oncology floor at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. “This job isn’t something everyone can do,” she said. “It takes a certain kind of person to want to do this and to be able to do it.” For the past three years, Ms. Berenschot has worked as a “preceptor,” a hospital staff member who gives health-care students hands-on lessons during the final part of their training. In June, Lakeridge Health recognized her at its annual award ceremony for preceptors after she was nominated by a former stu- dent. “Out of all the skills Anne taught me, the greatest thing is compassion,” wrote Jennifer McMenemy, a graduate of the practical nurs- ing program at Durham College. “The first time I really understood this was in my first week on the floor,” Ms. McMenemy said in her nomination. “I watched and assisted Anne give a dying man his last bath, (which) she did with such a gentle touch and soft-spoken words. “Later that day the patient changed dramat- ically and I watched Anne hold the patient’s hand and let him know that she was there with him while he took his last breaths.” Ms. Berenschot has been a nurse on and off for the past 40 years, working in maternity, cardiac and complex continuing care, before asking to work on the oncology floor a little more than two years ago. “I feel I have something to offer here be- cause I’m good at giving emotional support,” she said. “One of my philosophies is, we don’t look for a cure, we try to make the journey more bearable for the patients and their families.” On an average day, that might mean giving baths to some of the 19 cancer patients on the floor, administering medication to make them more comfortable, lightening the mood with a sense of humour, or just offering a lis- tening ear. Ms. Berenschot said it’s a delicate balanc- ing act to be compassionate and empathetic, without getting so emotionally involved with patients and their families, that it is devastat- ing when there is a death. But sometimes that closeness comes with- out realizing it and the loss of those patients can be hard to handle. Nurses like Ms. Berenschot have debriefing sessions with social workers and the hospital chaplain to help them through difficult times -- like a recent spate of young cancer patients in their 30s who died on the floor. “The young ones are really hard to deal with,” Ms. Berenschot said quietly. But she doesn’t shy away from the emo- tional roller coaster, which is probably one of the most important lessons she teaches to her young students. “I had a patient die during one of my stu- dents’ first day on the floor. She burst into tears and she was a little em- barrassed about it,” Ms. Berenschot recalls. “I told her, it’s OK, let your emotions go. We all do it. “We’re human.” Death a fact of life for nurse Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo Anne Berenschot is an oncology nurse at Lakeridge Health Oshawa who was recently rewarded for her efforts as a preceptor. ‘Out of all the skills Anne taught me, the greatest thing is compassion.’ -- Jennifer McMenemy, a graduate of the practical nursing program at Durham College I EPUMPPR C WATCHPR C WATCH online this week at • Follow Brad Kelly and Ron Pietroniro as they cover the Beijing Olympics • Athlete profiles / Videos / Photos / Blogs and more Our readers help you stay on top of gas prices Join us all summer long in our on- line feature -- Pump Price Watch. A number of phone calls, e-mails and letters in sup- port of the local Mr. Fix- It to the News Advertiser prompted questions for his local councillors on wheth- er they can help him out. The 81-year-old man and his 80-year-old wife, Jean, have been given notice to appear in court for run- ning a business out of their home. Mr. Tennant main- tains he doesn’t charge any money for repairing items for his neighbours such as lawnmowers, bicycles, and snowblowers from his back- yard garage, except for ac- cepting the odd coffee. But the couple has to go to court in September. “I am aware of the situ- ation, and I certainly feel sorry for the gentleman,” Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill McLean said. “It cer- tainly does not portray the City of Pickering in a favour- able manner.” Coun. McLean said he’s received complaints for the past year, but doesn’t recall any prior to that and sym- pathizes with Mr. Tennant’s situation. “We all need something to keep us busy, especially at his age,” he said. Coun. Dickerson said he’s been fielding complaints for the past few years. “Three years ago I told Mr. Tennant to at least come in and apply (for a permit),” he said, adding certain changes would have to be made to his garage such as insulating and ventilating it so he can close the door when working on lawn- mowers, for example, since the noise seems to concern residents. But, Mr. Tennant said the bottom line is he doesn’t run a business, and even when he starts up lawn- mowers to repair them, it’s only for a short time in the afternoon. Also, the bylaw is not online due to its large size. So, although Mr. Tennant was summoned to court for breaking the bylaw, he did not have a copy of the bylaw to reference. Though Coun. Dicker- son said he only wishes Mr. Tennant well, he believes the issue should still go to court. He said council could ex- empt him from the bylaw, but it’s difficult to do such a thing since people often think “If you do it for one why can’t you do it for ev- eryone?” So, at the next council meeting, set for Sept. 15, Coun. Dickerson said, he will be prepared to intro- duce a motion that keeps Mr. Tennant from being charged with a fee. But, Mr. Tennant doesn’t care about the fine; he wants to continue his hobby. Soccer mom ordered to perform community service ✦ Soccer from page 1 By Melissa Mancini mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The deal his union has made with General Motors is “the very best out of a very terrible situation,” says Canadian Auto Workers union Local 222 presi- dent Chris Buckley. General Motors is offering car vouchers and cash as buyouts to workers affected by the decision to close the Oshawa truck plant in late 2009. Details of the buyout plan were released to workers in a meeting held Monday at the GM Centre. The deal has three options for Oshawa plant workers, depending on the amount of seniority they have. Those eligible for retirement by July 1, 2009, can collect up to $120,000 plus a car voucher for $35,000 if they choose to do so now. Debbie Korson is one of the members who can take the en- hanced incentive retirement. “I feel very positive about it, they’ve done the best they can but I’m really lucky because I have my 30 years in,” she said. “I have a very good job that I enjoy doing. I didn’t plan on retiring early but you can’t turn this down. We’ve got a very good union.” Others in a similar situation, like Terry Rose, who has 30 years at the plant, aren’t sure they will take the package. “It’s not what I’m looking for but I might have to be satisfied with it,” he said. He said he was hoping to wait a couple of more years before retire- ment. For those who are not eligible to retire, there are other options. Workers with between 26 and 29 years of service can take a “leave to retirement” package where they will be paid 65 per cent of their wage from the day they leave until they hit 30 years. After 30 years they will get retirement benefits. They will also receive the car voucher and between $50,000 and $96,000, depending on years of service and their job in the plant. Workers will less than 26 years can take buyout packages with a lump sum cash payment -- de- pending on years of service -- and a car voucher. John Taylor has been with GM about six years, at the truck plant. “I think it’s very attractive for anyone who is looking to move on with their lives and looking for a new start, new opportunities,” he said. “It’s definitely something that could be beneficial. Even for those who are at the low end of the ladder for seniority, it’s definitely something to think about. You’ve got to wonder where the market is going.” He says he’s not sure if he’ll take the buyout, but it’s an attractive package. But some workers were not pleased with what the union pre- sented. For 53-year-old Doug Jolliffe, it’s the same old story. After working in Windsor for 20 years Mr. Jolliffe came to Oshawa in 2004 so he could help his two children get through post-second- ary education, he said. He said he will make $210,000 over three years if he can stay in the complex after the truck plant closes, a much higher return then the $100,000 he would get if he took a buyout. Mr. Jolliffe said he is thankful for every day that he gets to work and is hoping to stick it out until he can retire. He hopes Oshawa doesn’t suffer the same fate as his hometown, he said. “If you want a depressing site go to Windsor,” he said. “The mall we have there is half empty.” The canvass for the enhanced incentive retirement will go from Aug. 1 to Sept. 12. The canvass pe- riod for the buyout packages will last from August until December. The CAW said there are at least 1,579 workers eligible for the re- tirement package because they have 30 years of seniority. An ad- ditional 2.097 workers are eligible for the grow-into retirement pack- age. CAW expects 2,600 workers will be affected by the truck plant closing. There are 8,500 workers at the Oshawa complex. “Sometimes when you lose you win,” said Keith Osborne, Oshawa plant chairman. The Ontario Labour Board griev- ance filed against GM after the truck plant closing announcement has been withdrawn, he said. Eligible workers are guaran- teed to get their incentive if they apply for them. No one will be turned away. Did you see the front page recently? Pictured is Mr. John Tennant, a long- time Pickering resident. Mr. Tennant has been repairing small appliances for his family, friends and neighbours, something he has done for years and done for free. It is his hobby and it keeps him young. But, this hobby has come to the attention of the justice sys- tem and now John Tennant will soon be in court. He may be 81 years old, a Second World War veteran, an active and com- munity-spirited senior citizen, and a helpful neighbour, but still he is being summoned to court to answer for some supposed infraction. He, John Tennant, will have his day in court and if justice is done he will be given a medal. Mr. Tennant is who we all should aspire to be. He is a kind and generous man, a man dedicated to helping oth- ers. Let Mr. Tennant return to his home a free man. Let him pursue his hobby and if that provides a public service to his local community, then good for him and good for us. Keep it up, John. Elizabeth Bailie Pickering Common sense must prevail in John Tennant complaint To the editor: Re: ‘Will ‘Mr. Fix-it’ go to court?’, News Advertiser, July 18. I was flabbergasted to read the article regarding John Tennant and his sum- mons to appear in court. I, along with many others, have benefited from John’s skills and I am amazed that a complaint has been made. I cannot, for the life of me, understand the basis or the motive for it. Kudos to John Rooney for taking the time to investigate this matter and canvas the local area. If he wants to start a petition, feel free to call on 647 of the street in question, you will receive four signatures. I understand the City’s position of not commenting on a case before the courts, but I really hope our local councillors step in and see that common sense pre- vails. Let valuable court time deal with ‘real’ crimes that we read so much of in your paper. Jason Barnes Pickering Vandalism to car was cruel To the editor: Wednesday, July 9 I took my 14-month- old grandson to the Pickering Town Cen- tre. We parked in the southeast parking lot near The Bay. Upon our return to the car I was shocked to see that someone had keyed the car on the driver side very deeply using scribbles and the word ‘fag’. We contacted mall security. They came, took down an incident report, photo- graphed the damage and told us to con- tact the police. Mall security informed me there was video surveillance but it might be too far away to have captured anything. At the police station, we were informed that we might only want to fill out an incident report if we were going through insurance for the damages. My daughter was told the cost to repaint her car will be $500. This was a cruel and unconscionable act of vandalism. Susan Burke Scarborough Liberals also waste money To the editor: ‘Conservatives, Liberal MP argue over attack flyers’, News Advertiser, July 25. So Liberal MP Mark Holland says the Conservatives are wasting taxpayers’ money on flyers? Well that’s the pot call- ing the kettle black. The Liberals wasted $2 billion in taxes on the useless gun registry alone (which has not solved or prevented a single crime) not to mention the money wasted on the sponsorship scandal. This new ‘green shift” will likely cost taxpayers billions, remember the gun registry was supposed to only cost $2 million. Has Mr. Holland ever read his own mailers? I’d say they are not informative and are very partisan. PAGE 6 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ July 30, 2008P Provincial watch on seniors’ homes welcomed Y ou make the trip to visit your elder- ly parents in a local nursing home on a regular basis. You think things are OK but you can’t be sure. Perhaps your elderly mother can’t artic- ulate a problem she is having. Or your father doesn’t feel quite right but you can’t put your finger on what’s wrong. Discussions with staff may not answer the specific questions you’re looking to have addressed. That’s why it’s important to have rigor- ous oversight of Ontario’s senior citizens residences on a regular basis. It forms the backbone for Ontario ombudsman Andre Marin’s call for a fully systematic investigation into the Prov- ince’s monitoring of our long-term care facilities. This is a good thing and comes after Mr. Marin received more than 100 com- plaints to his office about the operations of long-term care facilities since April. While that investigation is being held, and its results won’t be available for at least six months, local residents can get some insight into how nursing homes are doing by visiting publicreporting. ltchomes.net. That Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care site will give you a snapshot about how the province’s homes are faring under two categories: citations under legislation and unmet standards. Receiving either a citation under leg- islation or an unmet standard indicates the facility has some work to do to get a clean record. With some 400 standards required by the Ministry for a facility to get a totally clean bill of health the requirement for professionalism is rigor- ous, as it should be. In Durham many of the long-term care facilities have first-rate records with zero citations and unmet standards. On a wide range of criteria, the facilities are doing what they are supposed to. In Whitby, the Village of Taunton Mills and Fairview Lodge got top marks while Extendicare Oshawa and Hillsdale Ter- races in Oshawa were free of citations or unmet standards. For facilities that have some work to do, the Province will closely monitor their efforts to reach zero citations and unmet standards. The message is clear: long-term facili- ties are under the microscope and must take care with our seniors. Anything less is unacceptable. This Week Are you concerned about the level of care our seniors receive in Dur- ham Region nursing homes? Yes No Last Week Are you in favour of building an ethanol plant in Durham Region at the Oshawa Harbour? Yes: 60% No: 40% Votes: 1,144 A two-part series on nursing home inspection records By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A look at the publicly available inspection records of local nursing homes shows that while some met all of the Prov- ince’s standards last year, many did not. The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s public reporting website (publicrep- orting.ltchomes.net) lists inspection results for Ontario’s nursing homes between April 1, 2007, and March 31, 2008. During the reporting period, eight of Dur- ham’s 19 nursing homes had clean inspec- tion records with zero unmet standards. Three of the 19 -- Community Nursing Home Pickering, Bay Ridges Long Term Care Centre in Pickering and Sunnycrest Nursing Home in Whitby -- had citations under the legislation governing nursing homes. Eight others had at least one unmet standard, which means they failed to meet one of the standards the Prov- ince sets out for the homes it funds. In total, long-term care facilities have to meet roughly 400 standards, which range from residents’ rights to rules around nutri- tion, the administration of drugs and use of restraints. Community Nursing Home Pickering had the highest number of citations, 26, during the reporting period. The home also had six unmet standards. Among the areas the home was cited for were the requirements for individualized, detailed residents’ plans of care, and a section detailing the residents’ bill of rights. Gladys Brett, vice-president of operations for Community Lifecare Inc., which runs the home, said corporate consultants were brought in to educate staff members on com- plying with the Province’s requirements. “I think it was just a clarification with the staff and expectations of how they should per- form their jobs and support was a large part of it,” she said. Ms. Brett said the Province considers all of the issues corrected except for the one sur- rounding residents’ plans of care, which she’s hoping the ministry will consider corrected on its next inspection. “All of the residents have plans of care, it’s just making sure all the little pieces were in place,” she said. As well, Community Lifecare Inc.’s home in Port Perry had the highest number of unmet standards during the reporting period, at 10. Ms. Brett said seven of the unmet standards found at Community Nursing Home Port Perry were removed. Of the three outstand- ing, one involves choice of bathing (residents have the right to choose whether they want a shower, tub bath or sponge bath), the evalu- ation of residents’ response to medication which was an issue with eight of 107 patients and the repositioning of residents in restraints, which has to occur every two hours. She said the issues were corrected imme- diately, and is hopeful of a perfect inspection next time. “We would like to believe that, absolutely.” Mark Nesbitt, a spokesperson for the Minis- try of Health, said the Province has increased the frequency of its inspections by 60 per cent since 2004. During that same period, the number of unmet standards has fallen by 20 per cent. “You have to remember that an unmet stan- dard just means we’ve been in and we’ve worked with the home to fix the issue,” he said. Homes have to submit a plan of action and they’ll be subsequently inspected to make sure it’s in place. Even if the home is found to be in compliance in the follow-up visit, the initial unmet standard remains on the pub- lic reporting site. Both inspection reports and plans of action are required to be publicly posted at nursing homes. If problems persist at a home, the Ministry can impose sanctions, starting with more fre- quent visits and escalating the Ministry taking over the home. No Durham homes are under sanction. Of the eight homes with zero unmet stan- dards, three are run by the Region of Durham: Fairview Lodge in Whitby, Hillsdale Terrac- es in Oshawa and Lakeview Manor in Brock Township. The Region’s fourth home, Hillsdale Estates in Oshawa, had two unmet standards record- ed during a May 2007 visit. Judy Heffern, the Region’s director of long- term care and services for seniors, said the unmet standards have since been correct- ed and an action plan was submitted to the Province. A subsequent inspection in August showed no unmet standards. “I’m not excusing it, we certainly provided education,” said Ms. Heffern. “Both of those unmet standards were related to documenta- tion.” Ms. Heffern said it’s difficult to keep up with the documentation. She said staff are strapped for time when caring for residents who are increasingly requiring specialized care. Last Wednesday, Ontario ombudsman Andre Marin announced a full systemic inves- tigation into the Province’s monitoring of long-term care facilities. He’s received more than 100 complaints about nursing homes since April. A spokesperson for the ombudsman declined to say whether any of those com- plaints originated in Durham. However, she said there would be more details once the report is complete, which is expected to be in six months. Mr. Marin invited the public to come for- ward with their experiences with long-term care and the Province’s monitoring system by calling 1-800-263-1830 or visiting www. ombudsman.on.ca. All are “passable”, but work is continuing on Whitevale and Greenwood area roads damaged by last week’s downpour and fur- ther impacted by this weekend’s rainstorms. “We are still fixing the washouts, shoul- ders, and ditches,” said Tom Quinn, Picker- ing’s chief administration officer, during an interview on Monday. The damage began after last Wednesday’s downpour, which saw flash flooding occur in the area of Bulmer Bridge in Greenwood (on the 5th Concession, just west of Church Street) and Whitevale Bridge in the centre of the village. The Whitevale bridge is still down to one lane from two at least until mid-week when Mr. Quinn expects a report on its condition. Trucks and heavy vehicles are still not per- mitted on the bridge. Whitevale Road needs to be repaved, but that’s been put off until at least September so the City can hold a community input meeting when residents get back from sum- mer vacations. “We will do the necessary things to make it safe right now,” Mr. Quinn said. The road was already in “awful condition” but is now worse. “We’re looking at a lot of money and if we’re going to do it, I only want to do it once,” Mr. Quinn said. The community meeting is planned for early September. Grader work and pothole repairs are oc- curring and should be finished early this week, weather permitting. There’s lots of small damage, he said. “A little damage here, a little damage there,” Mr. Quinn said. Two false ceilings on the tower near the library at the Pickering Civic Complex also collapsed because of last week’s rain and will cost between $8,000 and $10,000 to replace. Mr. Quinn expects to have more information on the cost of repairs caused by the heavy rainfalls by this Wednesday. Although a couple of big storms are ex- pected every summer, they haven’t been typical this year, Mr. Quinn said. “It’s the amount of rain,” he said. The ground isn’t getting a chance to dry either, preventing equipment from being able to get in and repair roads. “I felt (the storm) was severe enough that I would go out and take a look at it myself,” Mr. Quinn said. After the storm, he went out and stood on part of a road in the Greenwood area that looked okay, but it was completely washed out. Its culvert was broken and the road would have caved in if someone had drove on it, Mr. Quinn said. Family lost everything in blaze Damage set at $500,000 after townhouse units destroyed By Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com AJAX — A trust fund has been set up to help the victim of a fire that destroyed her new home. Susan King and her three children had just moved into a townhouse on Marsh Lane in north Ajax when the blaze happened just after 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 29. Ms. King and her family had “only been living there a few days” when the fire occurred. “I lost everything,” Ms. King said, including clothes, furniture, jewelry and her children’s pig- gybanks. “I lost all the televisions in the house. Every- thing.” She had also been taking an on-line course and Ms. King lost her computer and school books. Ms. King had no insurance and hasn’t been able to replace any of the lost items yet. The Kings lived in the end unit of a six-unit townhouse building at Rossland and Ravenscroft roads. It’s run by the Life Centre Non-Profit Housing Corporation. Three units at the end were destroyed in the blaze. At the time, Ajax Fire and Emergency Services estimated the damage at $500,000. The blaze is under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office. Ms. King and her children moved in with her mother, but she is moving to a senior’s building this week. Ms. King hasn’t yet found other accom- modation. “They are trying to relocate me. They haven’t found anything yet,” Ms. King said. The three units may be rebuilt, but work hasn’t started yet, he said. The trust fund is with the TD bank and the ac- count number is 02722-004-78856335452. Extension of Hwy. 7 on list of projects By Melissa Mancini mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The federal and provincial govern- ments have signed a $6.2- billion framework agree- ment for infrastructure be- tween the two levels of gov- ernment, Federal finance Minister Jim Flaherty said Thursday. Mr. Flaherty, MP for Whitby-Oshawa, said some of the money is being used for projects announced last year, including the exten- sion of Hwy. 407, the wid- ening of Hwy. 7 and the extension of the GO Train to Clarington. “This infrastructure money will be helpful for all of these projects that in- volve the Province of On- tario,” he said. “It is a very substantial investment and of course we also have the money that’s being invested in Durham Transit and there will be more money to be invested in Durham Tran- sit. They’re working on their long-range plan now and I’m looking forward to seeing it so that we can, well, quite frankly, invest more money in Durham Transit.” Some of the cash will also go toward re-opening the commuter train line between Peterborough and Union Station, which pass- es through north Whitby, he said. The plan was an- nounced as part of Mr. Fla- herty’s 2008 budget. The status of the project is still in review stages, he said. “We’re doing a joint re- view -- the federal govern- ment and the government of Ontario -- with Via and GO to determine the best way of restoring the service and who will operate it,” he said. “We expect that to be completed . . . within a year.” The process may go quicker than usual because the tracks are already on the ground, Mr. Flaherty said. “We’ll save a lot of time on the Peterborough line through Myrtle Station and down to Union Station be- cause we don’t need to do an environmental assess- ment,” he said. It’s too early to tell when the project will be com- pleted but since an envi- ronmental assessment will not be needed that could shave a few years off the project’s time line, the min- ister said. $5.00 OFF when you spend $20 DM0708029B Oriental Chicken Salad Quesadilla BurgerSatisfy your cravings at Applebee’s® , -Ê- -ÊÊ Applebees.com ©2008 Applebee’s International Inc. Not valid with any tournaments or any other offer Pine Ridge grad ready to hoop it up in Iowa Kurt Alexander to play for Iowa Central Community College Tritons men’s basketball squad By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — After being a go- to guy on the court for the Pine Ridge Secondary School Pumas senior basketball team last year, Kurt Alexander hopes to fulfil a similar role in the states next season. The six-foot combo guard will suit up for the Iowa Cen- tral Community College (Fort Dodge, Iowa) Tritons next sea- son on a two-year scholarship where he hopes to recreate his scoring ability with the team that competes in the Iowa Communi- ty College Athletic Conference. “I think I’m capable of play- ing there,” says Alexander, 19, of Ajax, who led the Pumas to an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) ‘AAAA’ championship berth last season. “I think I’m quick enough and I can score the ball.” And, he’s glad he won’t be the lone Canuck on the team, as he’ll be joined by Jermel Kennedy, a 6-foot, 6-inch forward who played at Scarborough’s Lincoln Alexander Secondary School last season. As well, he’ll room with friend and former Pine Ridge graduate Jordan Webb, who plays on the Tritons men’s soccer team. Although Alexander admits he hasn’t visited the campus, he’s ready and willing to work hard to earn minutes as a freshman with the Tritons. “The team is good and the campus is good. I can’t wait to go down and see how they do it in America, so I can get my game better and move on to a better school.” Alexander says his plan is to improve his game while attend- ing the Iowa junior college and eventually earn a scholarship to a larger Division 1 program. “I want to jump to a major col- lege,” he says. “You have to show- case your skills or you won’t get that look you want to move on to a better school.” Alexander’s grateful of his teachers and coaches at Pine Ridge, especially Pumas bas- ketball coach Jason McKenzie, who put him in contact with the coaching staff at Iowa Central Community College and helped him achieve the scholarship. “He worked it out for me. They saw a video and saw how I play and thought there was an oppor- tunity for me to go there. They want me to come in and score the ball and that’s what I do best,” says Alexander. For his part, McKenzie be- lieves Alexander has the skills to thrive in a competitive basket- ball environment in the states. “I believe that Kurt will be suc- cessful at the U.S. junior college level. He has an array of skills that should help him to succeed at the next level, such as a quick release on his jumper, tremen- dous co-ordination and body control and, most importantly, a unique combination of accu- rate long-range and mid-range shooting. “Finally, Kurt is mentally tough, physically strong and hard-working. He wants to be a great player and is more than willing to devote the time and pay the price.” Since signing for the scholar- ship, Alexander says he’s been training steadily in Scarborough, working on his fitness and his basketball skills in preparation for his freshman season with the Tritons. “It’s fitness and basketball combined,” he said of his train- ing regimen. “When you go down there, you have to be fit or you’ll be exposed.” Alexander will begin school in September and begin almost im- mediately training with the Tri- tons’ squad under head coach Dennis Pilcher. The basketball Tritons begin exhibition play in late October, culminating in an appearance at the Northeast Nebraska Classic tournament in Norfolk, Nebras- ka on Nov. 7 and 8. The ICCC Tritons begin league basketball play on Nov. 12 on home court against William Penn University Statesmen ju- nior varsity squad. Alexander plans to study sports management at Iowa Cen- tral Community College. AJ Groen/ News Advertiser photo Kurt Alexander, of Ajax, who’s a graduate of Pine Ridge Secondary School in Pickering, is headed to Fort Dodge, Iowa where he’ll commence a two-year athletic scholarship at Iowa Central Community College. The point/shooting guard will begin basketball play with the Tritons in the fall. Golden girls Pickering Soccer Club duo help Ontario win national U14 title By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — A heroes wel- come greeted a pair of conquer- ing Pickering Soccer Club players returning home from nationals in western Canada. Noelle Leon-Palmer and Amani Thomas, both 14, were surround- ed by their jubilant Pickering Power Pythons U14 teammates upon their arrival at Kinsmen Park on Monday afternoon. The duo returned with gold garnered while playing for Team Ontario at the BMO All-Star National Cham- pionships in Sherwood Park, Al- berta in the U14 girls’ division last week. The Ontarians posted an im- pressive 4-1 record at nationals, defeating British Co- lumbia 2-1 in the final at the cham- pionships, which at- tracted nine provincial teams to suburban Edmonton from July 22 to 27. Both players related the experi- ence of playing at nationals was unforgettable, exciting but, at times, nerve-wracking, especially a 3-1 victory over Quebec, which both agreed was the hardest game of the tournament. “Some games were harder than others. But, they were all hard,” said Amani, of Pickering, a for- ward for Team Ontario. Ontario U14s only loss at na- tionals was a 2-0 setback to the host Albertans. Otherwise, Ontar- io was perfect, rolling up victories over PEI (14-0) and Manitoba (7- 0). They earned the right to play on the provincial team at nation- als after the final cut-down one week before leaving for the west coast. A prime reason for Ontario emerg- ing victorious at nationals, noted No- elle, was the cohesiveness and chem- istry of the players. “We all got along really, really well,” said Noelle, a defender with Team On- tario. Pickering Pythons coach Nixon Ber- nardino, who also doubles as the tech- nical director for the Pickering Soccer Club, said 13 players started out in the national identification process at the Regional level. Of those players, five -- Jacquie Bog- def, Meena Sharif, Chanice Rhoden, Amani Thomas and Noelle Leon- Palmer -- were part of the initial Team Ontario U14s, with Amani and Noelle eventually landing a coveted spot on the provincial roster heading to na- tionals. “We’re proud, very proud of them,” says Bernardino of his players’ suc- cess. Both Amani and Noelle, who’ll each attend Pickering High School in the fall, say they hope to stick with the national program in future seasons. Patriots drop playoff opener to Centre Wellington West Durham downed 12-3 by Warlords in junior ‘C’ lacrosse action; Game 2 in Pickering Thursday PICKERING — A tough second pe- riod for the West Durham Patriots led to an opening-game loss to the Centre Wellington Warlords to begin Ontario Lacrosse Associations Junior ‘C’ playoff action. The Patriots fell 12-3 on the road to the Warlords in Fergus on Monday night to trail their best-of-five semi- final playoff series 1-0. The series continues with Game 2 at the Pickering Recreation Complex (aka Fort Pickering) on Thursday, July 31 at 8 p.m. After a solid first period to Game 1 where the Patriots trailed 5-3, the team’s fortunes went downhill from there. The Patriots gave up five Warlords’ goals in the second period to chase Patriots’ starting goaltender Jason Armstrong from the net. The second and third periods fea- tured a steady stream of Patriots to the penalty box, with the Warlords seizing the opportunity to extend their lead. Patriots’ GM Rob McDonald ex- pressed his disappointment with the outcome. “I expected a lot more from the team, especially after a hard-fought win last week against Shelburne on the road to clinch third place,” said McDonald. Game 3 in the series is set for Fer- gus on Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 8 p.m. Shelburne in playing Caledon in the other junior ‘C’ lacrosse semifi- nal series. The United Employees Credit Union and Canadian Security Solu- tions sponsor the Patriots.
