Durham groups brainstorm ideas to share with ministry By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Local groups fighting poverty on the front lines met Thursday for a brainstorming session on how to improve the system. Ontario’s Minister of Child and Youth Services, Deb Matthews, is currently working on a poverty-reduction strategy and Durham’s group met to provide recom- mendations to the minister. The meeting was made up of members of the Dur- ham Advisory Committee on Homelessness and among those in attendance were Regional staff, non-profit groups and people who use social services in Durham. The idea for the event came from Oshawa Councillor April Cullen, who chairs the Regional health and social services committee. She attended a similar session hosted by Ajax-Pickering MPP Joe Dickson earlier this summer. She wanted to get a broad spectrum of input and pointed out the challenges in fighting poverty in north Durham are different than fighting it in the lakeshore communities. Coun. Cullen said Oshawa is different from Clarington, and so on. “We need input from every area, no matter who the (provincial) representative is there,” she said. Working in small groups, the participants discussed things that were working in the community, such as a pilot program that brought services directly to people in the rec room of a housing project, and things that Fighting poverty in Durham See Local, page 2 Rain causes problems in Whitevale By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Mother Nature caused some severe flash flood- ing Wednesday, resulting in ero- sion on the Fifth Concession in Pickering. The Whitevale Bridge in the centre of the village, along with Whitevale Road and a lot of land, was under water from massive flash flooding. “We are going to sandbag that area just to make sure everything is going to be OK,” said the City’s Chief Administrative Officer, Tom Quinn, on his way to the scene. Also under water was the Bul- mer Bridge located on Concession 5, just west of Church Street. But the bridge did not receive much damage; it was more the road leading up to it. “Everything seems to be under control,” Mr. Quinn said after the water levels had subsided. “We’re just really under a lot of water.” Mr. Quinn said a number of other municipalities should experience the same problem, especially if they’re close to watersheds. Even the Toronto and Region Conserva- tion Authority sent out warnings about the overflow. “The forecasted rainfall may result in higher flows and water levels in all our rivers and streams, creating dangerous conditions,” the TRCA notice said. When it comes to ways to im- proving the system, one of the common themes was that peo- ple seeking help should not be bounced from one agency to an- other for their different needs. Because most agencies receive funding for specific services, they have no choice but to refer clients to others. Susie Boyle, an Ontario Dis- ability Support Program client, said the current system can be tough to navigate and many peo- ple don’t know who to call to get help. “You can’t think ahead because you’re just so overwhelmed try- ing to survive day to day,” she said. Ms. Boyle also expressed frus- tration with the way benefits are dispensed and said she wants clawbacks stopped. She said it feels like the government gives with one hand and takes with the other. Another barrier was getting information to people; direct- ing them to websites is in many cases ineffective. “Generally people, I find, don’t see my ad for homelessness pre- vention until they need it,” said Janet Ries, the homelessness out- reach worker for north Durham. A key aspect to the discussion was that child poverty couldn’t be fought by focusing on children only. Instead, the focus needs to be on the whole family. Ed Goerz, executive director for Cornerstone, which provides housing support including emer- gency shelter, said it was impor- tant that there isn’t labelling of poor people as deserving poor and undeserving poor. “We need to be addressing child poverty, but not in a vacu- um from a larger issue,” he said. Tatum Wilson, a representative for Ms. Matthews, also attended the meeting. Once the Province unveils its strategy, he said the government will stress reducing poverty is not just a moral im- perative, but an economic one. “As we have a changing econo- my, as we have changing demo- graphics, we need to have every- one at their best in order to have the province at its best,” he said. Meanwhile, Ms. Boyle said there were lots of good sugges- tions coming out from the ses- sion and she’s hoping it will re- sult in concrete action from the Province. “I hope they don’t take the in- formation they get and put it on a shelf.” Local groups say focus must be on family to fight child poverty Local, from page 1 servation Authority also sent out a notice of hazardous creek con- ditions, saying that downpours throughout Wednesday could accumulate 30 to 40 millimetres of rainfall. Through traffic re-routed Through, from page 1 FACE TO FACE WITH DEATH Whitby photographer travels to Kenya during election conflict to capture the pain of living in slums By Parvaneh Pessian ppessian@durhamregion.com WHITBY — At just 21, photographer Mike Berube of Whitby has seen his share of death. It was this past January when Mr. Berube, who was in Nai- robi, Kenya, received a 6 a.m. phone call to go to the Mathare slums. He was summoned to meet the family of a 17-year- old boy, killed in a conflict with an opposing tribe. He approached the badly burned body as if walking on glass while distant shots could be heard ringing in the thick air. The sun was rising and Mr. Berube was there to photo- graph the fallen. He remembers many things from that morning, but what stands out are the words of the young boy’s father as he placed a hand on his shoulder. In a low voice, the elder- ly man muttered, “The dead can dance. Even in death, the dead can still speak.” That chilling statement has since defined Mr. Berube’s life and career. In December 2006, he took his first trip from Whitby to Africa to cover the presidential election crisis in Kenya. He spent most of the year in 2007 and some of 2008 immersed in Kibera, Africa’s largest slum, ravaged by vio- lence and poor living conditions. He stayed with families, photographing and documenting their day-to-day lives. Growing up with a keen interest in world issues, Mr. Ber- ube remembers being affected by poverty even at the age of six while travel- ling with family. “I remember seeing a lot of communities and kids in situations that were very different from what I was used to,” he said. “It woke me up to this whole other world outside of North America.” His interest transferred over to photography when he started taking pictures three years ago. He found inspiration in the pages of books about the masters of pho- tography, including Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank. While in Africa, he remembers seeing a man eating grass. Food supplies had been cut off from major highways going in and out of Kenya, which left the people in the slums with- out food for nearly two weeks. Mr. Berube said watching this, even with his own stomach empty for more than a week, was unsettling. “I couldn’t believe the international community could let this take place,” he said, pausing as he pondered the images he’d seen. “In a world that has so much money and prosper- ity, we still have people 6,000 miles away, eating grass.” Mr. Berube said everyone has a right to witness what is happening in the world because he believes people gener- ally understand and want change. World-renowned Canadian photographer Yuri Dojc said he was impressed with Mr. Berube’s enthusiasm when he met him and admires his courage. “He goes where the passion tells him to go,” he said. “So his photos are gutsy and in your face. He doesn’t try to beau- tify it and that’s so refreshing.” Mr. Dojc has been in the business for more than 37 years and met many young photographers, but said he had never seen any of them care so much about the people they were taking pictures of. Mr. Berube, who refers to the people he photographs as friends rather than subjects, said he always tries to connect with them as much as possible. “You’re always part of the situation whether you like it or not,” he said. “It’s your job as a photographer to be in the middle of it.” News Canada president Ruth Douglas accompanied Mr. Berube on one of his trips to Kenya and said she was amazed by the relationships he developed with the people. “He really connected with them,” she said. “It was amaz- ing how much they gave him carte blanche and welcomed him.” On his return to Canada, Mr. Berube found it difficult to relate to people even though he has lived here all his life. “It’s difficult to be at a restaurant hearing people complain about the outcome of some television show when you’re wondering, ‘Are your friends that you just photographed still alive?’ ” Artsforum Magazine editor-in-chief John Arkelian said he admires the honesty in Mr. Berube’s photography that doesn’t only depict despair for the purpose of shock value. “There’s a sense of hope, persistence and strength that comes through in the photos,” he said. “These are people without many necessities of life but he shows they are still soldiering on.” Mr. Berube held an exhibition in March at the Royal Cana- dian Military Institute in Toronto showcasing his photo- graphs from Kibera, with all proceeds donated to relief efforts in Kenya. His self-published book, ‘The Dead Can Dance’, was recently released. It features photos and testimonies from his stay in Kenya. It serves as evidence of what’s happening there and many other places in the world where less privileged people live, he said. AJAX — About 130 employ- ees of Fleming Door Products Limited are on strike. The employees, members of Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) local 1090, walked off the job at the plant located at 20 Barr Rd. on July 18 after their contract expired June 30, said local 1090 president Steve Batchelor. The union and the company began negotiating the contract in May and their last meeting was July 10, Mr. Batchelor said. Union members voted 98 per cent in favour of job action, said Mr. Batchelor, adding that wages were a sticking point in bargain- ing. A statement from the compa- ny cites issues in the manufac- turing sector as the reason why they have not reached a deal. “As you know, economic con- ditions have deteriorated signifi- cantly for Canadian manufac- turing since we signed our last collective agreement in mid- 2005 and this has made us un- competitive,” the news release said. “As a result, we identified and implemented every conceivable way of increasing our competi- tiveness by reducing expenses,” the statement said. “While this activity has been helpful, it can- not overcome the difference in the significantly higher wage and benefit package that we pay compared to those companies with which we compete against for business. The Ajax resident has twice in a four-month pe- riod seen his 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee targeted by thieves. On April 17 and then again on July 4, Mr. Djorsev returned to the Ajax station to find the catalytic convert- er cut off his vehicle. Thieves target the Jeeps because they’re easy to get under, Mr. Djorsev said. And, the catalytic con- verters are taken because there’s platinum in them. If the thieves don’t sell the converters for scrap, the en- tire unit would be resold, Mr. Djorsev said. Replacing the catalytic converter cost $600 each time. So, he’s out “$1,200, including towing,” he said. Mr. Djorsev approached GO staff “but I got nowhere,” he said. Following the first theft, “I parked under a camera because it happened the last time,” he said. “I park under the camera for that reason.” When he told GO officials he had parked under a cam- era, he was told “it may not be on the car at that time. They’re not really helpful. They don’t help at all,” he said. Thieves can get under the vehicle and have the con- verter removed in a couple of minutes, he said. “I’m straight out of uni- versity. I don’t make a ton of money. It’s not insured. The money comes out of my pocket,” Mr. Djorsev said, adding GO is “the first to ticket you if you park ille- gally.” GO is “looking at” increas- ing staff at some stations to do more security work, said Gary McNeil, GO’s manag- ing director. However, “very scarce resources” are preventing having more security staff. “In order to have a high degree of security at those stations, you’d probably need about 10 people. Even if you’ve got a station at- tendant in a station with a CCTV (closed circuit televi- sion) camera, that’s a very large area to monitor,” he said. About 350 incidents are reported to GO each year, but officials admit there is no formal reporting pro- cess, so the number could be higher. “We have signs indicating to people to call through to Crime Stoppers if they have to. PICKERING — A commer- cial property in Pickering was among four addresses raided by police as part of an investigation into illegal gambling in the GTA. Durham police joined of- ficers from Toronto’s orga- nized crime unit and the OPP in the investigation, which identified four ad- dresses at which cops allege illegal poker games were oc- curring. Police have charged 47 people and seized gam- bling equipment including gaming tables, chips, cards and other paraphernalia, as well as $12,000 in cash. Nine people have been charged with keeping a common gaming house while 38 others, including two youths, are charged with being found in a gam- ing house. Police busted 12 people when they executed a search warrant at the Pickering ad- dress and charged two -- D. Paul Pritchett, 35, and 34- year-old Tanya M. Lee, both of Ajax -- with keeping a gaming house. Three of the gambling dens were in Toronto while the fourth was located in an industrial unit on Brock Road just north of Bayly Street, police said. My eight year old son decided to set up a lemonade stand to raise money for the Children’s Wish Foundation of Ontar- io. He sat out at the end of our driveway for four hours and poured lemonade he and I made earlier, and sold chips. He made $60 for the foundation thanks to the gen- erosity of our neighbours, friends and strangers. So, I just wanted to say thank you to everyone to came out and dropped in a few coins. The spirit of giving is alive and well in Durham, and it was a great example for my son Carter. Joy Peltier Pickering I had one of those days recently. You know, when you don’t want to be a grown-up anymore? Responsibilities and important deci- sions it seemed, were looming every- where. Some of it even involved math. I hate that. On those days you feel like the guy who walks the tight-rope for a living. Most of the time you’re so used to it that it doesn’t even cross your mind that you’re 100 feet above the ground without a net. But every now and then some little thing happens that causes you to stop and look down. In an instant you’re made painfully aware of just how much is riding on your shoulders and, more importantly, just how thin the line you’re treading on actu- ally is. Normally most of us can shrug it off. Get our eyes back on the far end of the rope and keep walking. But some days it’s harder than that. Those are the days when you just don’t want to be the grown-up anymore. At least for a little while. You want somebody else, maybe your Mom or your Dad to take the wheel for a spell. Just until you’ve had a hot bath, a nap and maybe some milk and cookies. You’d like to forget words like “Mort- gage” and “Due Date” and “Overdraft protection” on those days and maybe embrace some new words like “Cocoa” and “TV” and “Tree fort.” You’d like to stop staring at your com- puter screen or the documents on your desk, where the numbers and words swirl around like bothersome and confusing insects and instead lie on the warm grass and stare into the clear tranquil blue of the sky. You’d like to just lie there, so still you’d swear you can feel the earth rotating underneath you. On one of those days, instead of wearing your tires and your patience down in gridlocked traffic, you’d like to be swinging on a tire. Giddily holding onto a rope that disap- pears into a shadowy green canopy of leaves above you. Closing your eyes and tilting your head back and letting the wind sweep the burdens off of you. You ‘d like to do that until somebody else calls you in for supper. You’d like to fill your tummy on days like those, with not a thought to where it came from or how it was made or who paid for it. You’d like to climb into some warm, fuzzy jammies that somebody, some- where washed and folded into your drawer for you. On one of those days you would like to be tucked in. Tucked in and gently kissed to sleep with the promise of sweet dreams gently whispered into your ear. And then, to sleep. Not the shallow, fitful, “Def-Con Four” sleep of the parent, but the cool, dark, bottomless sleep of a child. All of these things run tauntingly through my mind on one of those days. But in the end, I realize thankfully, it is not any of those things that gets us safely across the rope. It is not even the rope itself that matters anymore, but what we have it anchored to. On those days, I’ve realized, you may always rest your weary grown-up back against the heavy, solid comfort of pride, determination, hope, love and family. And the best thing is, you can still have your cookies and milk ... and you don’t have to ask. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Somedays you just want to be a kid once again Ending the cycle of poverty will take more than talk I t’s a laudable goal -- working to elimi- nate poverty. But, what happens at the end of the day, when the report is hand- ed over to the government? Will it be, as we say in the news business, just a photo op, or will it actually be translated into action? The Ontario government is in the middle of a campaign, gathering information and public input on ways to eliminate poverty. That, we think, is good. An idea, even a small one, can come from anywhere. Once the campaign is over and the report filed, however, that’s when the tough sled- ding begins. There will be concrete and abstract ideas, suggestions, proposals and targets. What’s going to happen with them? One can look back to the late 1980s, when the House of Commons unani- mously passed a motion to eliminate child poverty by 2000. Well, 2000 has come and gone and here we are. The Province’s initiative is called Grow- ing Stronger Together. Workshops and seminars have been or are being held, including one recently hosted by Ajax- Pickering MPP Joe Dickson. And, talking isn’t a bad thing if it’s not done in a vacu- um. Susie Boyle, an Ontario Disability Sup- port Program client, said during a recent brainstorming session, “I hope they don’t take the information they get and put it on a shelf.” Members of the Durham Advisory Com- mittee on Homelessness, along with Dur- ham Regional staff, non-profit groups and people who use social services in Durham, kicked around ideas on how to improve the system. A common issue was people looking for help being bounced from one agency to another for their different needs. As most agencies receive funding for specific ser- vices, they have to refer clients elsewhere. Streamlining services is good. It saves money and reduces the level of frustration of those using the services. While solving poverty might be beyond the reach of a provincial government, less- ening the problem is certainly well within its grasp. Provincial governments in the past have gotten themselves into financial distress trying to spend their way out of a recession -- see Bob Rae and the NDP in the 1990s. Poverty can be tackled, but it’s an ongo- ing, never-ending grind. Make our educa- tion system the best in the world, make post-secondary education available to those in who want it but can’t afford it, counsel and help those receiving social assistance to break the poverty cycle. Region carries out public education campaign DURHAM — Planned testing this week of a new public alerting system near the Pickering and Darlington nuclear power plants has been can- celled. The Region of Durham conducted the first round of tests of the system at the end of June and beginning of July. Further testing was scheduled for the week of July 21, but has now been pushed back. The next round of tests will ensure that all components of the system are operational. The public alerting system is re- quired by the Province of Ontario within a three-kilometre range of each plant. There are 14 sirens sur- rounding the Darlington plant and four surrounding Pickering. The Re- gion is expected to complete the test- ing process by the end of the summer and is engaging in a public education campaign to inform residents about the tests and what to do in case of an actual emergency. Once the new testing dates have been established, the Region of Dur- ham will issue a public service an- nouncement to announce the dates. By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — While Hamilton and Niagara are abandoning plans for a possible incinerator for now, Durham Region is mov- ing full steam ahead. The City of Hamilton and Niagara Region were working to- gether on an environmental assessment (EA) study which was looking at options to deal with waste. Those options included energy-from-waste, stabilized landfill and refuse-derived fuel alternative such as turning garbage into pellets used as fuel. In 2005, the municipalities’ consultants said thermal treatment, which includes incineration, was the preferred alternative. “What we’re ending is the working arrangement with Niagara, and ending an EA study,” said Pat Parker, manager of solid waste planning for Hamilton. “That doesn’t mean we don’t still have a recommendation in our master plan to pursue alternative disposal at some time.” The two municipalities will instead focus on increasing diver- sion rates to 65 per cent. Currently Niagara sits at 41 per cent and Hamilton is at 42 per cent. As well, Niagara is working on a 20-year contract with a private landfill in the area. Hamilton is working to extend the life of its existing landfills. “We’ve recalculated our landfill capacity and we have about 25 years,” said Ms. Parker. Meanwhile, Durham Region’s diversion rate is 51 per cent, with top-performing municipality Whitby at 61 per cent. The Region has a 70-per cent waste diversion goal. Durham Regional chairman Roger Anderson said he expects opponents of Durham’s energy-from-waste project will raise the issue of Hamilton and Niagara terminating their EA study. “To compare us to Niagara and Hamilton, I don’t think would be relevant in our discussions,” he said. Mr. Anderson said the Region has a better recycling and composting rate, but does not have access to additional landfill capacity. As to increasing recycling in Durham, Mr. Anderson said the Region has to ensure everything that goes in the blue box can actually be recycled, instead of ending up in a landfill. He still sees a need for incineration to handle the trash remain- ing after diversion efforts. “We have to deal with the residual (waste). We’re continuing to expand our recycling and looking for other markets and it’s not appropriate under any circumstance to put things in the recycling and have us take it to the landfill.” Mr. Anderson said Durham is almost ready to put out a re- quest for proposals to build the incinerator and expects the five pre-qualified vendors to come back with proposals in October or November. Problem is, Canadians who might benefi t profoundly from psychotherapy—a.k.a. “talk” therapy—aren’t even considering it. Yet, evidence from brain imaging research suggests that one form of talk therapy known as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, or CBT, produces changes in the brain similar to those produced by anti-depressant or anti- anxiety medications. CBT emphasizes the idea that our thoughts (cognitions) affect how we feel (emotions). Treatment lasts an average of 16 sessions (includes “homework”), and involves changing negative patterns of thinking—and behaving—using slow, gradual steps. “CBT involves active collaboration between patient and therapist,” says Dr. Direnfeld, a registered psychologist who’s been practicing CBT since the early ’90s, and who is now the clinical director of the Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Ajax, Ontario. “In many cases, patients are quick to make worst-case-scenario assumptions, even when those assumptions are irrational and unwarranted,” explains Dr. Direnfeld. “My role is to use real-world evidence to help patients become more rational in their assessment of diffi cult situations, which then has a remarkable trickle-down effect.” Like medication, CBT has been shown to impact the brain in ways that are scientifi cally measurable. Take Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, characterized by anxious thoughts and repetitive behaviours that are meant to reduce the anxiety. In a study that compared CBT to Prozac, changes in the brain were essentially identical. Dr. Direnfeld warns, however, that a crucial element of CBT is a patient’s motivation to change. Roasted chickpeas were among the earliest bar foods being served in the ‘taverna’ of the time. Pulses spread around the globe as various culinary diasporas traveled to new lands including Canada. One of my favourite dishes springs from Sri Lankan Devini Desilva’s kitchen. As a pulse researcher at the University of Saskatchewan, action central for pulse studies, she often participates in departmental cook-offs. This is one of her winning recipes. Because no soaking is necessary, it takes less than 15 minutes to prepare. Devini says “If you think more spice is nice, add 1 tsp (5 mL) crushed dry chili fl akes when making the curry and for variety, add a handful of one of the following: fresh spinach leaves, freshly picked lamb’s quarters, Swiss chard, beet greens or chopped caulifl ower.” 1 cup split red lentils 250 mL 1 cup water 250 mL 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 2 mL 1 tsp roasted fenugreek powder * 5 mL 1 tsp curry powder 5 mL 1 hot green pepper, or other chili, seeded & thinly sliced 1 small onion, diced 4 cloves garlic, sliced 6 curry leaves (optional) ** 2 inches of pandan leaf **(optional) 1 1/2 cups coconut milk/ soy milk/ cow’s milk 375 mL 1 1/2 tsp salt 7 mL 2 tsp lime juice 10 mL Wash the lentils and drain well. Transfer to a medium-sized saucepan and add water. Stir in turmeric, fenugreek and curry powders; add hot pepper, onion, curry leaves and pandan leaf, if using. Cover and bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and steam for 7 minutes or until most of the liquid is absorbed and lentils are beginning to soften. Add milk and salt, stirring to combine. Cover and return to a boil over high heat. Stir and cook until mixture is bubbling and thickened. Remove from the heat and discard pandan leaf. Stir in lime juice. Serve immediately with rice, roti or French bread. * Roast the fenugreek seed in a dry skillet for 2 - 3 minutes or till golden. Almost every day from spring through fall, you could find Nich- olas Naimool with his friend and teammate Richard Quittenton at Paradise Park in Ajax, with Quit- tenton tossing to Naimool. “We’re there almost every day with the ball,” says Naimool, 15, catching the ball from passes thrown by Quittenton. “We’re there two to three hours every day; it keeps us sharp.” So sharp, in fact, that Naimool w ill run pass routes south of the border at Offence-Defence Elite Football Camp, an invita- tion-only camp at Coastal Caro- lina University in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina later this month. The elite camp reportedly at- tracts plenty of interest from the scouting staffs from National Football League and NCAA foot- ball programs. Although not a senior (the elite camp is primarily only for se- niors), Naimool, who possesses 4.7 second speed in the 40-yard dash, was still chosen for the elite camp after his play turned heads at the Offence-Defence Football’s select camp in Miami earlier this month. “To get to the elite camp, you have to be invited,” says Naimool, who lined up as a receiver on of- fence and as a cornerback on defence with the St. Michael’s College School Kerry Blues ju- nior team last season. “I was ac- tually surprised because there were guys there who looked bet- ter than me.” Naimool notes 44 players from the Myrtle Beach camp, along with 44 from an Offence-Defence Elite camp at a U.S. west coast lo- cation, will be named to the 2009 Offence-Defence American Bowl game, which will be played in North Carolina. Naimool can’t be named to the team, however, as only seniors receive invitations. A football player for the past seven years, including time with the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins Football Club, Naimool is more than content to soak in the knowl- edge supplied by the coaches at the upcoming elite camp, as well as hopefully receive some notice from college scouts there. “I’m excited to display my skills,” says Naimool, who’ll be joined by Quittenton at the elite camp. “It should be pretty fun because we have the timing down (with Quittenton) already.” To attend the Miami select camp, Naimool says a pre-requi- site was a letter of recommenda- tion from his St. Mike’s junior football coach Frank Ribarich, who provided him a sterling tes- timonial. Not only does Ribarich note Naimool’s a strong athlete, but is also one of the better players in the province at his wide receiver and cornerback positions. Last season with St. Mike’s, he hauled in 18 touchdown passes. “As a wide receiver, he’s one of the most gifted I have coached in 22 seasons and was one of the best, if not the best in his age group, in the province. He caught more touchdown passes for more yards than anyone I’ve seen in the province,” says Rib- arich in his letter. “As a defensive back, Nick has a natural ability to read the play and get to the ball.” Following the Miami select football camp, Naimool says he received plenty of notice from prep schools in Florida. Three schools in particular, St. Thomas Aquinas, Westminster Academy, and Chaminade-Madonna, all of Fort Lauderdale, invited him to be part of their programs this fall. Naimool notes he was in- trigued by the offers, but, alas, his parents are adamant he com- plete his studies at St. Mike’s be- fore possibly moving on to a prep school. Following high school, Naimool has tunnel vision in terms of where his interest lies in U.S. col- lege programs. He most wants to attend and play for either the University of Miami Hurricanes or the University of Florida Ga- tors. “They have a good sports med- icine program,” says Naimool of the U. of Florida. In addition to attending foot- ball camps, Naimool has also played for the Toronto Junior Argos in the eight-team Ontario Minor Football League this sea- son. The Junior Argos currently own a 5-3 record in league play, with Naimool hauling in one touch- down pass thus far. The Prowlers finished atop the eight-team tournament at Kinsmen Park after handling the Mississauga North Tigers 12-0 in the cham- pionship game. It was the second consecutive tournament victory for the Prowlers, after they won the Guelph tournament crown earlier this month. In earlier games at the Pickering tourna- ment, the Prowlers defeated Topham Park 8-7, Whitby 12-7 and Oshawa 14-8 to reach the final. Tournament highlights included home runs by Chelsea Cross and Larissa Reffle. Tara Wat- son made strong contributions on the mound and defensively, while Katrina Rohrich’s pitch- ing was decisive against the closely matched Topham Park team. Caitlyn Halbert and Amanda Smart tag- teamed in the catching position and were suc- cessful in holding runners on base with some great throws. PICKERING — Pickering Swim Club ath- letes competed and turned in solid efforts at two recent high-profile competitions. Fourteen club swimmers brought home 13 medals from the recent Ontario Junior Provincial Long Course Championships at the Canada Games pool in Thunder Bay. Sixty-two teams and 596 swimmers com- peted from across Ontario. Three PSC swimmers struck gold at pro- vincials. Carolina Gomba, 12, earned gold in the 100-metre freestyle. Alex Lee posted a gold-medal win in the girls’ 10-and- under 50m breaststroke. Katie Webster, 14, struck gold in the 200m butterfly. Gomba also earned silver in the 100m free. Lee was a silver medallist in the 100m breast and Amy Smith registered a sil- ver medal in the girls’ 10-and-under 50m breast. Six PSC swimmers also captured bronze medals.
