The Ajax-Pickering MPP is currently collecting signatures and will present a petition to the Ontario legislature asking that the mental health beds remain where they are. “This is our hospital,” he said. “We’ve worked on it and sup- ported it for 53 years. I can’t see a significant amount of savings from moving the mental health beds from one hospital to the other.” Residents picketed the offices of Mr. Dickson and Pickering- Scarborough East MPP Wayne Arthurs Tuesday morning to raise awareness of the job cuts at the Rouge Valley Health Sys- tem and moving mental health beds to Centenary hospital in Scarborough. He said the pro- vincial government has “bent over backwards” to ensure the hospital receives funding for its expansion, and the government sees the needs in the commu- nity. He added the sooner RVHS is in a better financial position, the more funding it will receive. And, on Monday night, it was standing-room only at a meeting hosted by the Friends of the Ajax Pickering hospital, conducted by co-chairman Bill Parish and co- chairwoman Yvonne Bosch. The former said it’s crucial the public voices its concerns. “I think unless you come out in droves, the fix is in,” he said. Residents and patients shared their fears about moving the mental health in-patient unit to Scarborough and talked about an upcoming public meeting hosted this Thursday by the Central East Local Health Integration Net- work. “It is urgent that the public be there and express their opposi- tion to this attack on the commu- nity’s most vulnerable citizens,” Mr. Parish said. RVHS made some changes following a peer-review report criticizing its financial misman- agement, being $78 million in long-term debt and capital defi- ciencies. Aside from cutting up to 220 positions (including 72 nursing positions), it also plans to consolidate the mental health unit. The CELHIN approved the hospital’s plan, but asked that public consultation take place before implementation of the changes. The CELHIN and the hospital have until May 4 to con- duct the meetings. Ajax resident Chris Andersen thinks moving the beds will only cause problems. He moved to Ajax in 1985 because of the com- munity hospital, and the popula- tion was only 16,000 at the time. He’s visited RVAP on a number of occasions, including being treat- ed for depression. He doesn’t see how moving the inpatient unit, now that Ajax’s population is around 90,000 to 100,000, makes any sense. “We have to fight this with ev- erything we’ve got,” he said. It became the sixth university in Canada to become part of the prestigious Partners for the Advancement of Collaborative Engineering Education (PACE) Thursday when its business partners gave the UOIT a cumulative donation of $680 million in equipment and software. Representatives from the five founding PACE partners were on hand, along with UOIT presi- dent Ron Bordessa, and Kimberley Christian, a manufacturing engineering graduate student and teaching/research assistant, for the official inauguration of the university as a PACE part- ner. “This is the single largest in-kind donation to UOIT and, undoubtedly, one of the largest ever to any Canadian university. It’s important for the university itself, the faculty and students. We’ll have no problem moving out of our com- fort zone to move into this new role,” said Mr. Bordessa. “I’ve been able to use PACE programs for my design thesis. I integrated the existing system into a 3-D format, then tested and validated my system on top of the other one. I’ve also taught first-year engineering students some PACE concepts,” said Ms. Christian. The UOIT is one of only 45 universities world-wide who are part of PACE. The schools work collaboratively on projects, such as the global vehicle collaboration project, which al- lows students to design and test vehicles tech- nologically with no physical labour. The donation is to fund math-based tech- nology for every aspect of the automobile-de- sign process, a technology General Motors has been using since the mid-1990s and wants to have fully operational at the university. “The automotive sector is one of the highest technology sectors. We found that the young people GM was hiring then, usually from the best schools, didn’t have the technological know-how for our technology. It took us 14 months to train them, but we wanted the tech- nology to be integrated to the university pro- gram,” said Elaine Chapman-Moore, manager of global PACE partnerships for GM product development. Ms. Chapman-Moore said the universities didn’t have the money for the required tech- nology and eventually partnerships with GM and the other four founding companies hap- pened. “Siemens, known by another name at that time, gave the software while Sun Micro- systems refurbished our (GM’s) hardware. EDS owned the assets to the systems, HP provided free workstations, and GM provides infrastruc- ture,” she said. The university began using various aspects of the technology in September 2005, said Remon Pop-Iliev, an associate engineer in the faculty of engineering and applied science. His chairmanship in the faculty is funded by GM and the Natural Sciences Engineering Re- search Council of Canada. Mr. Pop-Iliev, the person responsible for connecting the UOIT with the necessary technology that GM uses, said there are 845-to-860 faculty of engineer- ing students per year being trained on varying kinds of PACE software. Ms. Chapman-Moore said the UOIT’s close proximity to Oshawa’s GM plant, its automo- tive focus, and its newness were all factors in asking the university to become a PACE part- ner. “A lot of universities want to become PACE partners. They must be a strategically identified institution by General Motors -- we use a very stringent assessment process,” she said. Electronic Data Systems, Hewlett-Packard, Siemens, Sun Microsystems and GM were the PACE founding partners, a collaboration that came about naturally based on which com- pany could provide which equipment to PACE universities, said Ms. Chapman-Moore. By Reka Szekely rszekely@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Durham residents may be riding high next year when GO Transit ex- pands its double-decker bus fleet. GO’s 12 new double-decker buses, the first of their kind in Ontario, will hit the road this month servicing the route between the Oakville GO Station and York University along Hwy. 403 and Hwy. 407. In 2009, an- other 10 double deckers will be added to the fleet. “Those buses will be extending service to Unionville and possibly east towards Dur- ham,” said GO representative Stephanie So- rensen. Each of the buses is 14-feet tall, wheel- chair accessible and can seat 78 passengers, 46 on top and 32 on the lower level. With 37 per cent more seating capacity than a regular bus, the 12 double deckers will ac- commodate the same number of passengers as 17 regular ones. The buses were introduced to the public on March 20 with Premier Dalton McGuinty on hand for the ceremonial unveiling. “The public will definitely notice them, probably have some questions, but for cus- tomers it means better service, that’s what it comes down to,” said Ms. Sorensen. GO says the buses have the most envi- ronmentally friendly engines on the market, lowering their emissions and several pas- senger friendly amenities like 12-volt power outlets, individual reading lights and indi- vidually controlled air condition vents. The first 12 buses come with a $10.8-mil- lion price tag and the next 10 will cost $9.8 million. The fleet will be stored and main- tained in a new garage in Streetsville. Ms. Sorensen said GO drivers already par- ticipate in one of the most extensive training programs in the industry and double-decker drivers will receive additional training to drive the buses, including emergency in- structions. In fact, one of GO’s double deck- ers was spotted on the 401 in Durham last weekend, with its route sign reading “train- ing”. But, this doesn’t mean the end of single- level buses. “It will continue to be a mix, the main reason being height restrictions,” said Ms. Sorensen. For example, heading towards Union Station there are several bridges that don’t meet the height requirement. The buses will also use GPS technology to advise drivers of known overhead hazards. Based on feedback received, that route was confirmed as the Preferred Sewer Route (see map). The preferred route begins just north of Box Grove in the Town of Markham and follows along 14th Avenue to Townline Road to the Hydro corridor, travelling east along the Hydro corridor to Liverpool Road. The route proceeds south on Liverpool Road to Finch Avenue, continuing east on Finch Avenue and ending at Valley Farm Road in the City of Pickering. Essentially all of the proposed sewer will be constructed by tunnel method, which creates little or no disturbance to the surface except at tunnel entry and exit shafts at planned intervals. PIFs are being held to allow interested persons to comment on the following project activities: • Detailed assessments of the potential effects on the environment associated with construction and operation of the proposed sewer • Recommended mitigation measures for minimizing potential effects • Recommended environmental monitoring plans for use during the construction and operation of the proposed sewer • Recommended ecological, recreational, and infrastructure enhancements for the area The existing Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer is an integral component of the York Durham Sewage System (YDSS). The Regional Municipalities of York and Durham are undertaking the Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer IEA to address the additional sanitary sewer flows projected from future growth as allowed for in York Region’s Official Plan. The Regions are co-proponent on the IEA, as a portion of the study area is within Durham Region and they co-own the existing Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer within Durham Region. Comments and information regarding this IEA are being received from the public to assist York and Durham Regions in meeting the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. This material will be maintained on file for use during the project, and may be included in project documentation. Comments and information received will be used in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Your participation is an important part of the process and we welcome your input. We encourage you to attend either one of the PIFs to review the materials available and provide any comment or information that you have with regard to the project. A copy of the Synopsis Report #4 on the impact assessments associated with the proposed sewer, as well as other background information, is available on the project website: http://sec.cenet.ca. Cyril Mobbs says about a half-dozen residents in the Lawrie Drive area have approached the Town about a resident riding a motorcycle to work in the summer. “We’ve been in touch with council- lors for two or three years,” Mr. Mobbs states. The residents had a meeting with clerk Marty de Rond and Wards 3 and 4 Regional Councillor Colleen Jordan on Jan. 31, and were told the Town’s bylaw officer would look into the matter. The sound of the motorcycle early in the morning is “disturbing the neigh- bours.” The residents were told that because the motorcycle is licenced by the Province, “they had no jurisdiction over it,” Mr. Mobbs says. “None of us down here can’t understand why it can’t stop. It’s the person who is doing it, not the motorcycle.” Derek Hannan, the bylaw services manager, says the bylaw is subjective, but notes a motorcycle or “a youngster cutting the tail pipe off a car is outside the noise issue. It’s the Highway Traffic Act. We had the police look at it.” The bylaw points to ‘unusual’ noise, and that’s where the subjective nature comes in, Mr. Hannan says. He uses the example of a snowplow in a school parking lot at 3 a.m., plow- ing snow. When the plow backs up, there’s a beeping noise and that could be bothersome for neighbours. It might be inconvenient, but it’s not unusual. “We had an officer look at the situa- tion,” Mr. Hannan says. If it’s warranted, a warning could be issued. “We need witnesses and logs. It’s all subjective. It’s what’s unusual.” Bylaw officers can’t deal with speed- ers and residents admit the motorcy- clist is starting the bike and driving off, not sitting in the driveway revving it. Mr. Mobbs says, “We maintain the bylaw covers this and the bylaw officer says it doesn’t.” Without the help of the bylaw office, Mr. Mobbs says residents will be left to their “own devices. “We now have to consider our next steps and engage a lawyer for us and go against the Town. It seems the only thing we can do,” Mr. Mobbs states. Mr. Mobbs said the residents’ read- ing of the bylaw is “any noise by any- body by anything at any time. By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com AJAX — Police are urging wit- nesses to come forward as they try to sort out events that led to three people being stabbed in the vicinity of a house party early Sat- urday in Ajax. Durham cops got involved around 3 a.m. when they received a call about an armed person in the vicinity of Shipp Crescent and upon arriving found one person with serious injuries, said Ser- geant Paul McCurbin: “He had stab wounds to his torso, leg and arm.” Another person with knife wounds was found in a car stopped by police in the area. Police were soon notified about another stabbing victim who had shown up at hospital. Sgt. McCurbin said investiga- tors believe all three stabbings arose from a dispute at the party that was winding down around 3 a.m. “We believe there were two groups involved in this skirmish,” Sgt. McCurbin said. “We don’t think these are random attacks.” Cops had a portion of the street cordoned off Saturday and are continuing their investigation. They’re particularly interested in speaking to people who at- tended the party and saw how the dispute arose. I am someone who only uses compact fluorescents or LED lights. I take the old bulbs back to Home Depot for recycling. I drive a compact fuel-efficient car. We replaced all our lawn with drought-toler- ant or native plants. We recycle. We don’t fill our garage with wasteful purchases and complain about the need for on- street parking. We use solar power to run the garden pond. I bike or hike regularly... I don’t get earth hour. The absurdity that somehow turning off the lights for an hour will create this wave of conscious- ness baffles me. Let’s all break out into a chorus of some 60s anthem. It’s not about craziness it’s about consciousness. How many people are driving to their earth hour festivity? We fill the headlines with how much of OUR money is going to be spent by gov- ernment on monster projects for garbage and power generation. Where are the REAL incentives for individuals to make a difference? How about 10 per cent of the $150 mil- lion (re: incinerator) to include schools, apartments and businesses in the com- posting program? How about 10 per cent of the $40 billion (re: nuclear) for solar power. It’s nice that you get 42 cents per kilowatt, however an installation costs $20,000 and payback would take 20 years. Four billion would get over 250,000 homes solar panels with a homeowner cost of $5,000. Five-year payback, sign me up! This would almost replace all the power from coal-fired Nan- ticoke. Real solutions involve people. Real solutions promote personal involvement. Real solutions are not always mega proj- ects. Allan Williams Ajax Mental health beds must stay in Ajax To the editor: I have previously been an in-patient at the Ajax hospital’s mental health unit and could require hospitalization in the future. I work and give back to this community. It is important for people in Durham to ensure we keep the in-patient mental health beds open at Ajax. The surprising news that all 20 in- patient beds at the Ajax hospital are slated to close within 30 days and moved to Cen- tenary Hospital in Scarborough makes no sense. Anyone who is an out-patient at Ajax hospital mental health or goes to the emergency department in Ajax and who requires hospitalization, will have to be sent by ambulance, police or other means to Centenary for in-patient care. Using ambulance and police to transport patients is a waste of resources. Family and friends important in the support sys- tem and recovery of a mentally ill person will find it far, costly and inconvenient to travel to Scarborough. The Ajax hospital is expanding its emer- gency department and lab space. The in- patient mental health unit received funds and approval to have more beds allocated to Ajax. What happened to that? Every- one matters. People in Durham, includ- ing those who require in-patient mental health care, should be able to get it at Ajax. J. A. McGeachie Ajax Ajax residents ‘deserve better’ from hospital To the editor: Let me see if I understand this correctly. The prior management of Rouge Valley Ajax Pickering wasted a lot of taxpayer money over the last five or six years, and now a vital local health service will be removed from Ajax and absorbed into a hospital about an hour’s round trip away. We are supposed to sympathize about the debt, cheer the grand new “efficiency.” Well, forgive me if I wonder why the people and the whole “watchdog” system that was supposed to be protecting our health care dollars aren’t instead issuing an apology and compensating the Ajax and Pickering taxpayers for the money that system mismanaged for six years. Forgive me if I ask why this is how we spent the famous $600 annual health tax that promised all the local health care we need. No, it’s not all right to move a facility we need locally and have already paid for in the name of efficiency promised by the same system that blew our money the first time. We deserve better and as taxpayers who have less and less to show for their health tax dollars, we should demand it. I do. PAGE 6 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ April 9, 2008P Council should consider junk food ad ban for kids I n the battle of the bulge from toddler to teenager more and more of our youth are losing the waistline wars. Faced with statistics that show child- hood obesity has become an epidemic, Durham council will consider next week whether to endorse a ban on junk food advertising to children under 13. The province of Quebec already pro- hibits all advertising directed at children. Now, perhaps, it’s time for Ontario to take a long look at preventing the pur- veyors of junk food from targeting youth- ful consumers and drawing them into a life of unhealthy choices. There’s plenty of reason to be con- cerned. Statistics Canada shows that between 1981 and 1996, the prevalence of obesity jumped from five per cent to 16.6 per cent for boys and from five per cent to 14.6 per cent for girls. During the same period the amount of overweight boys climbed from 15 per cent to 35.4 per cent; for girls it jumped from 15 per cent to 29.2 per cent. The numbers are even higher now and the trend is to more and heavier young people. Obesity brings a host of health problems that can become chronic and lifelong if not treated. Illnesses like type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood pres- sure and stroke can develop from obe- sity. In addition to the human toll these diseases exact they also act as a drain on our public health care system since obe- sity treatments run to billions of dollars a year across Canada. And obesity and the health problems that come with it also hurt our overall productivity. In attempting to control childhood obesity, a multi-dimensional approach is needed combining home, school and society. Children need to be encouraged to become more active at school and at home. Adults need to make better food- buying and preparation choices and provide a good example for kids to fol- low. And just as governments did with a ban on advertising for cigarette smoking, perhaps a prohibition on junk food ads at times when youngsters are tuned in should follow. Solutions include relocating the smoke alarm or installing a smoke alarm with a “hush” feature. The Ontario Fire Code requires that every home have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas. It is against the law to disable a smoke alarm. OPG spokesman John Earl says a “ground fault, a short on the transmis- sion side” forced the company to shut the unit down. “It’s the system that car- ries the power away. It was our part of the transmission system,” Mr. Earl says. “We no longer had the paths to move the power out of the unit.” While the problem was being at- tended to, OPG decided to take Unit 7 off-line. “We’ll do some work on the control system,” Mr. Earl says. The reactor will be off-line “in the short term,” he adds, with no set date for the reactor to come back on line. Units 1, 4, 5 and 6 are at or near 100 per cent full power, while Unit 8 is in a planned maintenance outage. Units 2 and 3 were placed in a per- manent shutdown state in 2005, with the fuel and heavy water being re- moved. Pay in 24 equal monthly installments, interest free. Councillor Rick Johnson suggested taking a look at Brock Road just south of Taunton Road in Pickering, where the speed limit is 60 kilometres per hour, and two local roads, Rossland Road at Coronation Road, where the speed limits is also 60, and Garden Street in Whitby where it passes under the railway bridge, where the speed limit is 40. Heading west, Rossland is a Regional Road until Cochrane Street only. “I think a review has to be done of some of these roads that have become speed traps for Durham police to pick off one (driver) after the other,” said Coun. Johnson. The Pickering councillor was quick to point out he doesn’t want to see increased speed limits everywhere. He wants to see those areas that have had recent road improvements re-ex- amined. “When it’s four lanes, do you still need it to be 60,” he asked. Coun. Johnson said he’s had resi- dents call him to complain about cer- tain speed traps and said most people drive at the speed at which they’re comfortable. “If you’ve never had a speeding ticket, maybe it’s because the speed on that road is not the right speed.” But, several councillors, including Oshawa Coun. Nester Pidwerbecki and Regional Chairman Roger Ander- son, said they didn’t think increasing speed limits would fly with the pub- lic. “Ninety-nine per cent of the time we’ve had complaints to reduce speed on Regional roads, not increase them,” said Mr. Anderson, A member of the police services board, Mr. Anderson also said many of the speed traps are in locations where people have complained about speeding. “They’re not there just to raise money,” he said. Still, when it comes to ticketing speeders, Coun. Johnson said he gets lots of complaints from residents who’d like to see more of a police presence in their residential neigh- bourhoods and near their schools. There are about a score of them, life-sized, two-dimensional figures created, painted and dressed by To- ronto artist Cynthia Kemerer. The lifelike characters are called ‘The Gathering’ and it’s up to the viewer to determine just who they are and what is going on. Is it a party? A family reunion? That’s entirely up to you. “It’s just a gathering. It’s about whatever you think it is,” Kemerer said. “Some look very glamorous. Some look very dissatisfied. It’s a very waspish group, although there is one Ethiopian woman.” There are pets, too. These are stand-up figures, a synthesis of painting and sculpture, said Kemerer, a storyteller, historian and artist. They are done in mixed media and collage, mounted on ply- wood and covered with plexiglass. Like paper cut-out dolls of old, the characters’ clothes can be changed and Kemerer has done that in the past, although it’s a big job. “They’re all dressed up. They’re sitting, standing,” the artist said. “A few of them are actually hanging on the wall but they’re feet are touching the ground. You can mix and match, depending on the gallery.” There are also paintings hanging on the wall behind the characters, more portraits, which provide an- other layer to the story, she said. One look at these figures will have you wondering what they get up to at night, once the gallery is closed. There are real people behind those characters. The figures are all based on the artist’s friends, who posed for her. Not all were happy with the results, she said, adding she paints as she sees people. “People want glamour,” she said. Some people bought their figures but they are in the minority, she said. “I think some people want them or they want to see them but not in their own living rooms.” As for the exhibit, which runs until April 30, she knows not everyone will enjoy or even get understand it. “Some people don’t get it. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea. The photogra- pher who was here was thrilled with it. He understands it,” she said of the Durham Region Media Group’s Mike Pochwat. Kemerer has been painting since 1978. “I did landscapes for years and I did fairly well with them. Then I just switched. I went into portraits and it seems to me to be more interest- ing.” The gallery is located in the Scu- gog Memorial Public Library, 231 Water St. , Port Perry. Jeffrey Buttle, who captured the gold medal in the men’s singles event at the World Figure Skating Champi- onships in Gothenburg, Sweden last month, will perform as part of the club’s 35th anniversary ice show at the Pickering Recreation Complex at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. For Barbara Scott, the club’s first vice-president, having Buttle per- form is not only good for skating aficionados to see the reigning world champion at the shows (he’ll per- form at both sessions), but also to show the young skaters involved in the show what’s possible with hard work and dedication. “I know we always want to have someone special to highlight to fam- ily and the families what skating is all about and what it can lead to. We’ve had (Canadian and North Ameri- can cham- pion) Donald Jackson in the past and this time we heard about Jeffrey Buttle before he went to the world champi- onships. “How can someone of his calibre come to a little club like Pickering? Jeffrey Buttle Short-handed Dunbarton hockey team loses to Lucas in quarter-finals By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Dunbarton High School senior boys’ hockey players are left to wonder what might have been at the provincial high school senior boys’ hockey championships in Ottawa last weekend. Although battling gamely de- spite being short-staffed through- out the tournament, the No. 1- seeded Spartans (33-3-1 overall) finished out of the medals, owing to a narrow 2-1 quarter-final loss to the third-seeded A.B. Lucas Vi- kings of London at the 20-team Ontario Federation of School Ath- letic Associations (OFSAA) ‘AAA’ championships. The narrow defeat to Lucas, notes Dunbarton coach Brad Ree- son, had much to do with the stel- lar goaltending of Andrew Leclair, who almost singlehandedly stole one for the Spartans. Dunbarton was outshot by a wide 37-19 mar- gin and, for the most part, were outplayed by the Londoners. “We had four or five good min- utes but, other than that, they took it to us. If you look at the pos- session and flow of the game, they dictated 75 per cent of the game,” says Reeson. “Sometimes a team can win a game although they were outplayed, but it wasn’t meant to be. We ran out of gas not having a full team.” Lucas carried a 1-0 lead into the second period before the Spartans tied it on a goal by Alex Clements, with as- sists to Andrew Rhodes and Mike Purcell. Lucas scored what turned out to be the game winner with 2:16 remaining in the second pe- riod. Neither team was able to score in the final period. The result was a bitter pill for the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) champions as they entered the OFSAA champi- onships at less than full strength. Four players opted out of playing with the Spartans there, owing to commitments with the Ajax- Pickering Raiders midget ‘AAA’ squad at the all-Ontario champi- onships, also in Ottawa, that was played on the same week. Reeson says there’s plenty of proof that having the team’s four ‘AAA’ players available for OFSAA would have made a difference in the team’s fortunes. St. Mary Catholic Secondary School hosts its annual Brian English Memo- rial Hockey Tour- nament for ju- nior boys’ teams, starting today (Wednesday) at the Don Beer Sports Arena. English, who taught at St. Mary, passed away from a heart attack several years ago. The tournament, says Shayne MacDonald, St. Mary organizer and junior boys’ hockey coach, w as supposed to have been played prior to the March break. A snowstorm in the area post- poned the event until this week. This year, seven Durham Re- gion teams are taking part in the event.
