The RVHS Board of Directors approved the Deficit Elimination Plan and Hospital Ser- vices Accountability Agreement yesterday. A December, three-member, peer review re- port criticizing financial mismanagement in RVHS prompted changes to both of RVHS’s Ajax and Scarborough sites, especially with RVHS’s $78-million in long-term debt and capital deficiency. Letters were circulated last month warning staff of upcoming cut- backs. RVHS plans to cut up to 220 jobs over the next three years - 60 from the Ajax site - to help get it back on financial track. RVHS president and chief execu- tive officer Rik Ganderton said the ball has to get rolling right away. “We need to do it quickly,” Mr. Ganderton said. “We can’t afford to do this by death by 1,000 cuts.” Board chairman Tom Atkins said during the past eight years, RVHS has accumulated huge deficits by spending more than it re- ceives. “On top of this, our projections show that if we did nothing we would run up further huge operating losses, which we simply do not have the cash to support,” he said in a press release. If nothing was done, projections in the re- port showed the hospital system would run up a net deficit of $21 million in fiscal year 2010/2011. SCARBOROUGH — Students from Frenchman’s Bay and Fairport Beach Public Schools spent their chosen Elective Day at the Bikram Yoga Studio near Port Union Road in Scarbor- ough Tuesday. The kids spent the day learning about Yoga, nutrition and enjoyed a hands-on drumming class with Master Drummer and Percussionist Muhtadi. Mental health beds moving from Ajax hospital ✦ See Hospital, Page 2 durhamregion.comP PAGE 2 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, March 26, 2008 RVHS will have a $6.5-million deficit for 2007/2008, but officials believe the changes will lead to a balanced budget by the fourth quarter of 2008/2009. Mr. Ganderton acknowledged hospitals that run efficiently receive more govern- ment dollars. He said running the hospital more efficiently will include increasing the average occupancy of beds in service and discharging patients earlier who are ready to go home. “The reason we’re able to cut jobs is be- cause we’re cutting beds,” Mr. Ganderton said. Twenty mental health beds will be trans- ferred from RVAP to Centenary hospital in Scarborough to have one consolidated men- tal health in-patient unit, something Mr. Parish sees as a disservice to Durham resi- dents. But out-patient mental health staffing will be increased at RVAP and mental health crisis coverage will now be 16 hours per day at the east site as opposed to the previous 12. Mr. Ganderton explained Centenary was chosen simply because “we don’t have fur- ther bed capacity to consolidate it at the Ajax site.” Dr. Steve Fishman, RVHS chief of psychia- try, supports the plan, saying it will enhance the quality of care for the mental health pa- tients while improving access for outpatient mental health services. “There will be some inconveniences for families who have to travel to visit in-pa- tients, but since fewer and fewer mental health patients tend to be hospitalized this impact should be minimal,” he said in a press release. The hospital hopes to save about $25 mil- lion over the next three years, with the ma- jority of positions cut through early retire- ment and voluntary exit incentives, elimina- tion of vacant positions, redeployment to vacant positions and retraining, explains Mr. Ganderton. “My hope is virtually nobody will be leav- ing us involuntarily,” he said. He explained RVHS plans to eliminate 72 full-time and part-time nursing positions over the next three years and, as of Feb. 28, 150 nurses were eligible for early retirement. In total, 13 non-union management posi- tions, 12 non-union staff positions and 195 union positions will be cut. In total, RVHS will eliminate 36 beds over the next three years. In Ajax specifically, two will be removed from the women’s and child program, one from surgery and 20 from mental health. However, eight medicine beds will be added to RVAP, so that means the total loss at RVAP is 15. The Emergency Room will remain open at all times at both hospitals, and ob- stetrics and pediatrics will continue at both. Mr. Parish criticized the lack of consulta- tion with the community on the process, say- ing public town hall meetings should have been held in Ajax, Pickering and Whitby. He also criticized the timing of the town hall staff meetings. “Having town hall meetings (for staff) after the decision is made is not enough,” he said. David Brazeau, RVHS director of public affairs and community relations, explained Mr. Ganderton has been vocal about the hospital’s situation for the past year. “Our staff actually are not surprised by what was announced today,” he said. Mr. Ganderton explained the town hall meeting with staff is only being held after the decision on the plan is made because “a de- cision has to be made before you announce it.” As for a town hall meeting for the general public, Mr. Ganderton said, “we’re looking into that right now.” The plan still has to go to the Central East Local Health Integration Network Board of Directors this Friday for its final approval. Staff at the Ajax-Pickering hospital site will be cut by about 60 with officials hoping most of those will be through early retirement. Hospital officials say emergency rooms will remain open 24/7 ✦ Hospital from page 1 Conservative MPP says budget won’t attract businesses By Kim Downey kdowney@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Local residents can expect to benefit from a provincial budget that includes millions in funding for transportation and infrastructure projects, and millions to retrain unemployed workers. Finance Minister Dwight Duncan called the “centrepiece” of the budget the investment of $1.5 billion over three years in a Skills to Jobs Action Plan. The plan will train unemployed workers for new careers, expand apprenticeships, build more spaces in colleges and universities, and help students with education costs. Some 20,000 unemployed workers will get long-term training that launches them into new, well-paying careers through a $355- million Second Career Strategy, Mr. Duncan said. An additional $750 million over four years in new business tax relief to lower costs for Ontario’s businesses was also highlighted in the budget speech at Queen’s Park in To- ronto. The finance minister also mentioned the need for the Province and federal government to work together, especially to help Ontario workers get their fair share of Employment Insurance benefits. “We have a plan to cope with the challenges facing Ontario,” Mr. Duncan said. “But we could get better results, faster and in partner- ship with the federal government.” But Oshawa Conservative MPP Jerry Ouel- lette said the Liberal budget falls short of addressing the needs of individuals and busi- nesses. “We lost 194,000 manufacturing jobs in Ontario and yet they announce a program to assist 20,000 individuals to retrain; what happens to the other 174,000 individuals?” Mr. Ouellette said in a telephone interview. There has to be a plan to attract businesses and “I don’t see a plan here,” he said, add- ing more needed to be done to create an environment attractive to business retention. Manufacturing has been hit hard by the rising loonie and the weakened U.S. economy, he said. Hopefully, Durham College and UOIT will lobby for a “fair share” of the funding to re- train people, Mr. Ouellette said. Mr. Duncan said the budget will pour more than $82 million in transit improvements along the Hwy. 2 corridor, part of a multi-year $17-billion investment. “It’s great that the Province recognizes how important transit is in Durham and they’re prepared to support us on this,” said Dur- ham Region Chairman Roger Anderson. “It’s greatly appreciated.” The money will mean that in the future, buses will run every 7 1/2 minutes along Hwy. 2. The Province is also funding more infra- structure improvements like roads and bridg- es and increasing spending on social housing, all issues that needed to be addressed, Mr. Anderson said. “They have done an awful lot for munici- palities,” he said. “There’s a lot of money on the table. There is an extra $400 million out- side of Toronto and we in Durham will qualify for that.” The Province is also boosting fund- ing for job training, education, health care while balancing the budget. The budget also makes significant invest- ments in health care, education and infra- structure. But Bob Malcolmson, CEO of the Great Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, raised concerns about manufacturing and Hwy. 407 funding. “The budget doesn’t go far enough to ad- dress the long-term impacts of the high Cana- dian dollar on core industries such as manu- facturing and, in particular, the auto sector, which in the past has been the leading job and wealth creator in Ontario and Quebec,” Mr. Malcolmson said. ”That the Ontario govern- ment still has not addressed in the budget the funding of Hwy. 407 across Durham Region causes this chamber great concern.” -- With files from Reka Szekely Training central to provincial budget Durham College gets money to invest in training By Josie Newman jnewman@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A $1.5-billion Skills to Jobs Action Plan announced as part of the Ontario government’s budget will see Durham College receive more money for its investment in sec- ond careers strategy, apprenticeship training, and funding for capital renewal of equipment and facilities. “We haven’t received precise dollar figures yet, but they do talk about ex- panding apprenticeship training. That’s very important for the college. We’re excited about capital funding because we like to have state- of-the-art equipment,” said Durham College president Leah Myers, shortly after the bud- get was tabled in the Legislature. Of particular importance to Durham Col- lege is a plan to expand its skills training centre, located on the Whitby campus, by 40,000 square feet. “We’re hoping to add new energy programs and energy retrofits, too,” said Ms. Myers. Students at Durham College will also be able to receive some funding as- sistance when purchasing textbooks -- $150 per student in 2008, $225 in 2009, and $300 in subsequent years. Five injured in Ajax 2006 Halloween rampage By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com AJAX — The teenaged ringleader of a shooting rampage that left five people wounded has been sen- tenced to the equivalent of three years in custody. It’s a wonder no one was killed when the young man and his friends opened fire on a street crowded with youths and youngsters out trick-or-treating in a resi- dential Ajax neighbourhood, Ontario Court Justice Don- ald Halikowski said in deliv- ering his ruling. “As a result of this youth’s actions five people were shot and only an act of Prov- idence prevented someone from being killed,” Justice Halikowski said. “He is quite capable of performing the cold act of planning the shooting of an- other human being and not caring if people other than his target find themselves in the line of fire.” The judge sentenced the youth to 12 months in jail and another 10 months of open custody, giving him credit for the equivalent of eight months in pretrial cus- tody. The youth, 17 at the time of the incident on Oct. 31, 2006, will also be on pro- bation for a year. The youth’s identity, along with the names of two others charged in the incident and tried separately, is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. An order im- posed at the beginning of court proceedings earlier this year prohibited report- ing on the cases until the conclusion of evidence in the trial of the two co-ac- cused, which occurred last week. At both trials judges heard the youth targeted a rival who had broken his jaw in an earlier clash, enlisting the help of friends and tracking the young man down at the Nottingham subdivsion on Rossland Road near Westney Road on Halloween night. The young men climbed out of a taxi van they’d hired for the night and waded into the crowd, firing what wit- nesses described as eight to 10 shots. The shooters ran back to the van and fled, court heard. Five people were hit and one stray bullet slammed into a home nearby. After an intensive police investiga- tion the youth was charged with five counts of aggra- vated assault, conspiracy to commit aggravated assault and numerous weapons of- fences. Durham police Detective Dan McKinnon said cops were aided by witnesses who stepped up to help the investigation in spite of the danger they may have faced. “The investigative team worked around the clock for evidence . . . interviewing over 100 witnesses,” he said. “The witnesses weren’t in- timidated and they did the right thing.” Police were shocked by the nature of the crime, which saw multiple shots fired on a street crowded with inno- cent bystanders, he said. “The crime was reckless,” Det. McKinnon said. “I don’t know how nobody got killed that night.” In explaining the sen- tence, Justice Halikowski said that even if the youth didn’t pull the trigger that night, he engineered the in- cident. “(The youth) was the prime mover in this opera- tion,” the judge said. “Nothing short of incar- ceration will bring home to this young man the serious- ness of his actions.” A verdict in the case of the other youths is expected in May. Officers also arrested three people for drunk-driving offenc- es during the initiative, part of the service’s ongoing effort to combat aggressive driving. Cops across the region were on the lookout for bad driving as students returned to school after their March break. Police laid more than 1,380 charges, 1,056 of which were for speeding. Another 28 tickets were writ- ten for stop sign and red light infractions, and drivers also re- ceived tickets for failing to wear seatbelts, driving while under suspension and without insur- ance and other offences, police said. Durham police have vowed to continue their campaign to ad- dress aggressive driving. AJAX — A knife-wielding bandit made off with cash and tobac- co after robbing a convenience store in Ajax Monday morning. Durham police said the sus- pect produced a black-handled kitchen knife and robbed a 43- year-old male clerk at the Ragika convenience store on Ritchie Avenue around 8:45 a.m. The bandit helped himself to cigars, cigarettes and cash be- fore fleeing the store and run- ning off northbound on Westney Road. No one was hurt during the robbery. The suspect is a black man in his early 20s who stands about six-foot-two. He wore a dark hooded jacket and had a bandana over his face. Back-to-school blitz nabs more than 1,000 speeders Bandit brandished knife during store robbery in Ajax DURHAM — Durham Re- gional Police have made 63 arrests after concluding a six-week drug trafficking in- vestigation that resulted in the seizure of $40,000 worth of drugs. The operation, dubbed Project Magnet, began in response to community concerns about drug traf- ficking in Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax. One area given special attention in the in- vestigation included a sub- division near Durham Col- lege and UOIT in Oshawa that has been the subject of numerous complaints from the community. During the investiga- tion, undercover officers from the Drug and Gang Enforcement Units bought cocaine and other drugs on the street. The operation resulted in more than 200 charges against the 63 people ar- rested, most of them for trafficking cocaine. Police thanked the com- munity for their co-opera- tion with the investigation, during which officers also seized drugs, including crack cocaine, marijuana and oxycodone as well as cash, guns and ammunition for a total value of $40,000. Forty-five of the incidents took place in Oshawa, 14 in Whitby and four in Ajax. Of the 63 people charged, 36 are residents of Oshawa, seven are from Whitby, four were from Toronto, three were from Ajax and the rest were from other locations. I felt it was a good time to let everyone know how we are doing. So, I am writing this on behalf of my husband and family. As many of you know, my husband Phil was in a terrible fire in Pickering in August. The months following have brought many challenges to us. Our family has faced the many stages of Phil’s recovery with amaz- ing inner strength. However, we would not have gotten through the last several months if it had not been for the support of family, friends (including the terrific group who helped us move our business), neighbours, Grant and Dorothy from fire services, the fellows at Hollywood Auto- motive, those who helped at our hospital, the ambulance crew that did the run to Rochester, Faith Family Church and other church congregations in our community, school teachers, the great kids at Ajax High School, the staffs at J. Clarke Richardson Collegiate and the CIBC, the mayor’s office, the ladies I work with at Hallmark, the News Advertiser, Dr. Noble’s office, Total Rehab, Ajax Animal Hospital, the doctors and nurses of Sunnybrook Critical Care Burn Unit and St. John’s Rehabilita- tion Centre. Lastly, and just as important, the friends of friends and the people who have remained anonymous, who simply wished to help to make things easier for us. Without all of these wonderful people we would not have made it through everything we have had to face. My family and I are so thankful to all of you for your generosity and kindness. What an amazing town we live in. Lastly, I wanted to let everyone know that Phil has continued to improve at a miracu- lous rate. I believe that the hundreds of prayers said for him made this possible. He is excelling at a new job and, although he tires easily, is doing well. His hands, so badly burned, are OK. The grafts on his arms and hands took very well and, with the therapy he continues to do several times a day, he has regained the use of both hands. His face and head have healed beautifully and he looks great. From the bottom of our hearts and with deepest gratitude, thank you. Marsha Nedham (for Phil, Heather, Amanda and Bryan) Ajax Let’s increase collection days during busy times To the editor: Re: ‘Region has vision of clear garbage bags’, March 2. I applaud our Region’s efforts to improve our waste-diversion rate, but chopping the number of garbage bags we can put out and focusing on enforcement are unneces- sary and overly punitive strategies. It is easy to see that hundreds of thou- sands of Durham residents have embraced our recycling and composting programs when looking at the blue boxes and green bins out by the curbside each day. More than half of my current garbage is made up of recyclable plastics, styrofoam and child’s diapers that could be recycled or compos- ted but not in our region. Improving the program by accepting more recyclable items will help us improve our diversion rate without penalizing large or active families that create higher amounts of both recyclables and garbage. Cracking down on “scavengers” is also a waste of funds. I applaud our residents who have figured out ways of reusing or otherwise profiting from things that the rest of us throw away. Making recyclable collec- tion more flexible, in particular during busy periods such as the winter holidays, would also improve the waste-diversion program. When faced with the large amount of recyclables put out during busy periods lots of it is left behind by the collectors rath- er than taking cardboard that is not folded quite small enough or bundled tightly enough. How about increasing rather than cutting collection days during those times? Adam Waese Oshawa Library costs prohibitive to non-Pickering residents To the editor: On March 1, 2008 I paid a library fee of $25 because I am not a resident of Pickering. Next year this will increase to $45 and I’m sure the fee will further go up over the next few years. I am fortunate to be in a position to pay this annual fee. But think about those who are denied the chance to enjoy and share in our vast inter-municipality library resourc- es. Isn’t it strange that in an era where global barriers are being dismantled, Pickering is erecting them, all in the name of the mighty dollar. PAGE 6 ◆ NEWS ADVERTISER ◆ March 26, 2008P The Ontario budget brought down by Finance Minister Dwight Dun- can will likely do nothing to quell the furious to-and-fro between federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty. Mr. Duncan’s document is long on spending and investment and light on tax cuts for businesses or individuals. Not exactly the prescription Mr. Flaherty has been pushing over the past month. Then again, the Province is facing uncertain economic times borne out of a high Canadian dollar, soaring oil prices and concerns about the fiscal health of our largest trading partner, the United States. Combine all that with crumbling infra- structure, worries over retraining laid-off workers and forecasts of extremely mod- est growth and it’s no surprise Mr. Duncan delivered a timid document. For Durham specifically, there isn’t much. The Region will share in the $60 million purchase of 20 new GO train cars on the Lakeshore line. And, as part of the $744 million Metrolinx investment for GTA transit, some $82.3 million will be spent on a Hwy. 2 Bus Rapid Transit spine. Otherwise, the budget pushes retraining in a big way, an admission of the mas- sive job losses faced by the manufactur- ing sector over the past few years. The centrepiece of the budget is a $1.5 billion three-year Skills to Jobs Action Plan. Its goal is to retrain 20,000 unemployed workers to help them find new careers in good-paying fields. There will also be more apprenticeship programs and nearly $1 billion in investment for post-second- ary and skills-training facilities, in part no doubt to help train the growing number of laid-off workers. Businesses will get some limited tax relief. The minister will provide $750 mil- lion in targeted corporate tax cuts and rebates over the next four years. There are pledges to help cut red tape and a push to encourage businesses to invest in new equipment. It’s not a lot but it’s some- thing. Mr. Duncan paid tribute to increased co-operation between the Province and its municipalities, and at a dig at Mr. Fla- herty, reiterated that Ontarians receive some $4,000 per year less in EI benefits than other Canadians. Overall, the budget is cautious -- not surprising given the times we live in. It’s a sensible prescription for the coming year. -- Metroland Durham Region Media Group This Week Durham MPP John O’Toole is proposing a ban on handheld cellphones while driving. AJAX 905-686-1440 BETWEEN HARWOOD & MONARCH Robbery is a theft with violence. This includes acts of violence, threats of violence, gestures of violence and intimidation. A street-level robbery, as the name suggests, usually occurs in public, and are robberies of persons rather than businesses. Items commonly sought by the robber are money, iPods, cell phones, electronic games, skateboards, hats and clothing. In 2007, the Ajax/Pickering Division of the Durham Regional Police received 150 complaints of such incidents. A dedicated police unit was formed to investigate these occurrences and 100 arrests resulted. In the fi rst two months of this year, 20 inci- dents have been reported and 14 arrests have been made. The success of this police unit is the direct result of the victim reporting the crime and cooperat- ing with the police investigation. It is also the result of the community, parents, teachers and witnesses refusing to accept violence as an acceptable action of the few. If you have been the victim of a street-level rob- bery, call 911 as soon as possible. Never be afraid to tell your parents or a teacher of the occurrence, as knowing what you just went through will help them understand what you may be experiencing. Try and stay near the scene of the crime, and make a mental note of the suspect(s) description includ- ing their height, weight, hair, clothing and the direction STREET PROOFING Avoid being the victim of a street level robbery ADVERTISING FEATURE they fl ed in. Be prepared to give the police a statement as to what happened and any serial numbers, photo- graphs or distinguishing features of items stolen. If you were injured, police will photograph the injury and your treatment records will be required. Recognizing the fact that robberies do occur is the fi rst step in avoiding such an ordeal. Know your environment, and travel in well-lit open areas used by the public. Avoid short cuts through parks, pathways, and behind buildings, especially after dark. Plan your travels with a friend or two, and keep items of value concealed. Don’t fl ash your cash in public. Be mindful of who may be watching or listening to you discussing with your friends what you have on your person or at home. Robbery is a serious criminal offence with conse- quences that affect us all. For the victim, the stress caused by such an act can sometimes be unbear- able even weeks later. Help is available, just call the police and ask for the Victim Services Unit. For the community, action is a necessity. If you witnessed the event, come forward, work with the police and help us ensure that the perpetrator bears some consequences as well. I went to school (Thursday) and had a meeting with the school principal and we discussed it and the reper- cussions,” she said, add- ing a further meeting with participants of the trip will be held. After that, she will learn the precise length of the suspension. The principal of the school comment. The Grade 10 R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate stu- dent arrived at Pearson In- ternational Airport at 6:30 p.m. on a flight from Hong Kong -- four days after the theft that attracted national news coverage in Canada. The News Advertiser has chosen not to reveal the girl’s identity. She admits she stole a pair of Eior sunglasses while shopping in the store with a friend just before their plane was to depart for Canada last Saturday night. They had been on an eight-day trip to Hong Kong and China. A woman approached her 45 minutes before de- parting, showing her a hand-held video surveil- lance video that showed her stealing the glasses. As a result, she was not allowed to board with the rest of the group that in- cluded 42 students from three Durham schools, along with chaperones. All charges were dropped and she was fined the equivalent of $285 Cana- dian, which is roughly the value of the sunglasses. Youths normally get fined at least twice that, she said she was told. The girl said she is just relieved to be home and wanted to apologize for the grief she caused that even baffled her. “It was unexpected and spur of the moment,” she said, adding that she can’t thank McLaughlin teacher Chris Barrowclough and his wife enough for support- ing her through the ordeal. They posted bond on her behalf to avoid a stay in jail. She is also grateful that the authorities fast-tracked the case and dealt with her leniently, but admits to being extremely upset with herself. If anything good is to come from the situation it is that it will prevent oth- ers from making the same mistake, her mother said. “I just wish it was not my kid that was the example,” she said. “We’re just very relieved she is home and safe.” She and her husband were on standby to fly to Hong Kong but were reas- sured the case could be dealt with quickly. “I think people have judged us as parents,” she said. “You teach your child right from wrong but you can’t always control their decisions. She’s a kid who has done something very out of character that shocked everyone.” The mother said she plans to send a message of thanks to the authorities for dealing with it quickly. The trip, which origi- nally cost $4,000, will end up costing much more because of the associated costs of having her daugh- ter and the two adults stay in a hotel, but she is grateful they stayed on. They were able to use the same plane tickets with an added ser- vice charge. Now the family will have a meeting to decide how to deal with it, including im- posing restrictions on what the girl can and can’t do. For now she is grounded and under “house arrest.” “Relationships need to be healed,” the mother said. “She made a mistake and has paid a price. She will be paying the price for a while.” THE COMFORT I WANT www.chartwellreit.ca 1801 Valley Farm Rd. Pickering, ON Call 905-420-3369 THE RETIREMENT OPTION OF CHOICE “I am truly comfortable here. As in, that catchy song from ‘My Fair Lady’, the popular music which is being presented by Scu- gog Choral Society staring March 27 at Town Hall 1873, Queen and Simcoe streets. Filled with songs such as ‘The Rain in Spain’, ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’, ‘Wouldn’t It Be Loverly’, the musical is set in turn-of-the-19th/20th-century London, England, where two lin- guistics professors, Henry Hig- gins and Colonel Pickering, have a wager on whether Higgins can tutor a linguistically-challenged Covent Garden flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to became a proper English lady. There’s no doubt of the out- come in this romantic classic but there’s plenty of conflict and fun along the way. “It’s like the granddaddy of musicals.” said director Michael Roantree, who’s active in Oshawa Little Theatre and making a re- turn to SCS. “It’s the one benchmark others are marked against,” he said. “It’s a very strong story.” There are larger chunks of dia- logue than usual, making the play “very demanding.” He added he needed to cast experienced ac- tors who can also sing, he said. “It’s beautifully sung by the cast,” he said. “When we were auditioning, I was looking for someone for Eliza who could sing the very high note at the end of ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’. You can pitch it lower but I really wanted that note and we got it.” Playing Eliza and hitting the heights is Janice Saywell, of Whitby, who has played in mu- sicals in Oshawa and Port Perry before. This is her first major role. Prof. Higgins is played by vet- eran actor Michael Schneider, who’s appeared with OLT, SCS and Cadenza Productions in the past. Bruce Rogers brings his radio announcer’s voice to the stage as Col. Pickering. Todd Appleton, of Oshawa, plays Freddie Eyns- ford-Hill. Phil Cook, of Pickering, plays Eliza’s dad, Alfred Doolittle. Mrs. Higgins is Michele Jones, a local singer. Steve Kreider, local businessman, is Zoltan Karpa- thy. Judy Anderson, of SCS, is housekeeper Mrs. Pearce. All told, there are 26 in the cast. Cast members come from all over Durham Region. The show runs for three week- ends, March 27 to April 12, with 8 p.m. curtain, plus 2 p.m. shows April 5 and 12. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and students. Tickets are available online at starticketing.com or at 1-888- 808-2006. Oshawa played host to the Ontario Ringette Provincial Championships and each team was introduced to an enthusiastic welcome. Former teammates now rivals Jasper, Johnston and Painter go for ringette gold at nationals in Edmonton AJAX — Although teammates for many years in the Ajax Ringette As- sociation, three Ajax women will face each other on opposing teams at the 2008 Canadian Ringette Champion- ships in Edmonton from April 1 to 5. Elyssa Jasper with the Richmond Hill Lightning, Kristin Johnston with the Gloucester Devils and Katie Painter with the Cambridge Turbos will all vie for national supremacy with their respective teams. As far as playing against long-time teammates, “We’re still friends,” Painter says, laughing, “But, on the ice, Turbos kick butt.” Having finished their Belle level play in 2007, each of the three was drafted during the summer by teams in the National Ringette League (NRL). Ten teams will contest the NRL championship title, the top four teams from each of the Western and Eastern conferences along with an Atlantic squad and a host team. Jasper was selected by the Rich- mond Hill Lightning, who finished second in the Ontario Di- vision of the Eastern Con- ference with a 19-12-1 record and secured a spot at na- tionals with a quarter-final win over the Riv- Sud Revolution of the Quebec di- vision. Jasper scored an overtime winner during this best-of-five series and finished third in scoring for her team this season. Jasper currently studies at Fan- shawe College in London, making for some long commutes to games as Ontario and Quebec play inter- divisional games all season. Meanwhile, Johnston, who studies human kinetics at Ottawa University, was drafted by the Gloucester Devils, which were glad to see a player of her calibre available in the Ottawa area and chose her for their 2008 squad. The Devils finished third (17-13-1) in the Ontario Division, but secured a spot at Nationals with a quarter- final series win over the Cyclones de Quebec. John- ston finished second in team scoring for 2008 with 12 goals and 27 assists. “My line is all first-year players,” says Johnston. “Al- though we all have Team On- tario experience and have meshed well, the influence and guidance of the veterans on the team have really helped us elevate our play.” Meanwhile, Painter, 19, was taken by the Cambridge Turbos with their second pick in the June entry draft. The Turbos are a powerhouse in the NRL with veteran players and mem- bers of Team Canada on their roster. Cambridge finished with an impres- sive 28-1-1 record atop the Ontario Division and downed Quebec rival the Montreal Mission three straight in a best-of-five series to capture the No. 1 ranking from the Eastern conference. Painter is currently studying Hospitality and Tourism at George Brown College in Toronto. She is also an assistant coach for the Ajax Ringette Association’s petite ‘AA’ team. The petites recently captured silver at the provincials in Whitby. “This has been one very busy sea- son,” she says. “With school, work, my own practices in Cambridge, games around Ontario and Quebec, as well as practices and games for the petite team I have been on the go constantly. Painter is happy to be suiting up for Cambridge, including playing for head coach Glen Gaudet as well as playing on the Turbo’s top forward line. “Playing with the Turbos is awe- some. Coach Gaudet told me up- front that as the youngest player I would have to work hard to get ice time but has shown confidence in me by using me on power plays and penalty kills at different times during the season. Getting to play on lines with the best players in Canada re- ally helps my game and Jen (Wake- field) and Sharolyn (Wouters) have helped me with my coaching, too.” Kristin Johnston Elyssa Jasper Sports briefs MARCH 26, 2008 [ Softball ] City association starts season with clinics PICKERING — The Pickering Softball Association hosts free play- ers’ clinics in conjunction with its regis- tration events this spring. The sessions are on Mondays, March 31 and April 7 at Fairport Beach Public School gymnasium from 7 to 9 p.m. each night and on Saturday, April 12 at the Dunbarton High School gym- nasium from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information, log on to the association’s website at www.pick- eringsoftball.com for further dates. [ Hockey ] Pickering player’s NCAA title quest stopped in semis PICKERING — A Pickering col- legiate hockey player fell one game short of playing for a national cham- pionship with the University of New Hampshire Wildcats women’s hockey team. Pickering’s Jennifer Wakefield, 18, led her second-seeded Wildcats into the NCAA Frozen Four semifinal contest in Duluth, Minn on Thursday night. Despite outshooting the third-seeded University of Minnesota Dulu- th Bulldogs by a wide 43-15 mar- gin, the Wild- cats dropped a close 3-2 deci- sion at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center. The Wildcats’ freshman scored one of the two New Hampshire goals in the losing cause. Wakefield was honoured with several collegiate hockey awards this season, including Hockey East rookie of the year, the league rookie scoring title (45 points, including 26 goals), and being named a conference all-star and an all-rookie all-star. At the Hockey East playoff tournament, she was also named to the all-star team. The UMD Bulldogs went on to crush the University of Wisconsin Badgers women 4-0 in the national championship game.
