DURHAM — A slow melt will likely mini-
mize spring flooding, but local conserva-
tion authorities are urging general caution
around thawing rivers in the region.
“There’s a lot of snow on the ground,
which represents an awful lot of water,”
said Ryan Ness, chief flood duty officer for
Toronto and Region Conservation, which
monitors most of Pickering and Ajax.
Cold nights mean that, for now, the snow
and ice are melting slowly, reducing the
risk of flood.
“What we are monitoring now is the de-
velopment of ice jams, which occur when
the ice breaks up as it begins to melt,” Mr.
Ness said.
The ice can cause water to back up
around culverts and bridges, flooding river
banks. Several areas along Duffins Creek,
at Riverside Drive, Church Street, Bayly
Street and Brock Road are susceptible to ice
jams.
Mr. Ness does not rule out flooding alto-
gether this year.
“It’s entirely dependent on how quickly
spring comes and how quickly it warms up
and whether we get rain with the warm-
ing.”
As usual in the spring, the public should
treat rivers and streams with caution, giving
them a wide berth, he said.
“The banks of rivers and streams are
a dangerous place to be; they’re slippery
and can give way as the river thaws out,”
said Mr. Ness, adding that people and pets
should stay off the ice.
The TRCA’s website includes a flood fore-
casting and warning centre with a colour-
coded indicator of current conditions. As
of Thursday morning, it was set at normal
(green). It’s available at trca.on.ca.
In the north, the Lake Simcoe Region
Conservation Authority (LSRCA) is watch-
ing the winter melt carefully. Lake Simcoe’s
water level is higher than normal. In late
February, it was at a 40-year high of 218.98
metres above sea level. The water dropped
somewhat in early March, but this week
rose again, sitting at 218.95 metres above
sea level on March 10.

be there,” said Tom Hogenbirk, man-
ager of engineering technical services
(flood control) for the LSRCA.
That could mean flooding in low-
lying areas, particularly in York Re-
gion. In Durham, the Beaverton har-
bour is prone to ice jams and Game-
bridge in north Brock Township is
generally susceptible to flooding, as
it sits on a major river system along
the Talbot River. Mr. Hogenbirk said
its important that people are aware of
their surroundings and if they see ice
jams start to form, they should contact
their municipality. For the upcoming
week, the LSRCA expects cold weath-
er will keep the flood potential low.
At last week’s council meeting, Brock
Township Mayor Larry O’Connor ex-
plained the issue to council.
“We may be in a situation where
we need help and I just wanted to let
council know the situation is of con-
cern,” he said.
Regional Chairman Roger Ander-
son said if anything were to happen,
the Region would be there for the
northern communities.
“We’d have to send staff up there to
do as much as we can to alleviate the
problem,” Mr. Anderson said.

PICKERING — The City of Pickering
has spent just about as much as it pro-
jected for the 2008 winter control bud-
get.
Pickering has already spent $450,000
on salt and another $40,000 on sand this
year. Operations and emergency servic-
es director Everett Buntsma explained
although the 2008 budget hasn’t been
approved, the earlier projection for
snow removal costs was $500,000.
“So we’re going to be asking Council
for more money,” he said.
Pickering has been experiencing lim-
ited growth, causing difficult budgets
with climbing tax increases in recent
years. Ward 2 Regional Councillor Bill
McLean explained although he antici-
pates good things for Pickering with
new developments coming to the city,
the money from that probably won’t
be evident until next year, and the huge
amount of snow this winter hasn’t
helped the City’s financial costs.
“There’s some light at the end of the
tunnel but it’s going to be a tough year,”
he said.
He explained that for every $380,000
the City spends, that’s a one-per cent
tax increase. He compared operating
a city to running a household, with
factors such as heat, maintenance and
upkeep coming into play.
“It’s going to be quite a challenge
doing our budget with unexpected
things like this (huge amounts of snow)
coming into play,” he said.
Coun. McLean said last weekend’s
snow removal cost the City $46,000;
$10,000 for salt and sand and $36,000 in
overtime hours. He said people parking
their cars on the street during storms
adds to the snow issues. Around 600
parking tags were handed out to cars
parked on the street last weekend. This
causes a huge safety problem in the City
by not only forcing cars and plows to
swing around the parked cars, but also
shifting the snow banks closer into the
middle of the road, he said. He added
Pickering has about 1,000 kilometres of
lanes to plow.
“It (impedes) the speedy, orderly op-
eration of snow plowing and adds to the
overtime as well,” he said.
In 2007, the snow budget was $370,000
but the City spent $616,000, $153,000 on
overtime. “So we basically spent double
what we’d budgeted,” Mr. Buntsma said.
Mr. Buntsma explained since salt has
lately been hard to come by in Dur-
ham, the City has hired an independent
trucking company to pick up salt from
Goderich, ON, and has received three
of 20 loads so far.

DURHAM — The mayors of Uxbridge
and Brock will join forces with the
Region to lobby the Province on the
phosphorus issue that may freeze de-
velopment in the two communities.
The Ontario government is looking
at reducing the amount of phosphorus
released into Lake Simcoe from the 15
sewage treatment plants that currently
discharge into the lake. Of those, four
are located in Durham, three in Brock,
including two lagoons, and one in Ux-
bridge.
Representatives from the two mu-
nicipalities say the Province’s proposed
limits would freeze development in
their communities because the plants
would not be able to use any more
capacity than is currently being used.
“Our concern is we’ve had very lim-
ited growth in Brock Township,” said
Mayor Larry O’Connor. “We have
state-of-the art (sewer) facilities that
the Province helped fund and this may
limit all growth.”
The mayor points out that a pro-
posed subdivision in Sunderland is the
first in a decade in the municipality.
At last week’s Regional council meet-
ing, Mayor O’Connor agreed to join
forces with Uxbridge Mayor Bob Shep-
herd and Regional Chairman Roger
Anderson in bringing their concerns to
the Province.
A report at the Region’s works com-
mittee states urban waste water, dis-
charge from the sewage treatment
plants, accounts for just seven per cent
of phosphorus heading into the lake.
The report said dramatic and costly
improvements to sewage treatment
technology at the plants would only
produce a one per cent reduction.
Larger contributors include agricul-
ture at 36 per cent, urban storm water
at 13 per cent and phosphorus in the
atmosphere at 35 per cent.
“If we want to attack the issue of
phosphorus, I would say dealing with
the agricultural sources and the urban
storm water is the way to go,” said
Mr. Anderson. Whitby Councillor Don
Mitchell said it’s important the Region
advocate for the health of the lake as a
whole. “Which is more than just saying
don’t pick on us, we’re the least of the
problem,” he said.
Correction
DURHAM — Epilepsy Durham has
set up an outreach table at the Oshawa
Clinic, 117 King St. E., for Monday,
March 17.
Incorrect information appeared in a
recent story.
Also, the story stated epilepsy was
caused by a head injury of some sort.
According to Epilepsy Durham, only
30 per cent of cases are caused this
way. The cause of the remaining 70 per
cent is unknown. The News Advertiser

Municipalities join forces on phosphorus issue

arrest in a week

AJAX — A pizza delivery driver tackled a knife-
wielding bandit in Ajax Monday, fending off threats
and a physical attack from the bad guy’s accom-
plices and holding the suspect until police arrived.
“We try to discourage people from taking on
armed persons,” said Detective Mike Horrocks of
the Durham police robbery unit.
“But obviously he’s a very brave fellow.”
The driver, whose name wasn’t released, was at
the Pizza Pizza shop on Harwood Avenue when a
masked man armed with a large knife entered and
demanded cash shortly before 11 p.m., Det. Hor-
rocks said. The bandit appears to have panicked
when an employee ran to call 911 and left the shop
empty-handed.
As the man fled, the 33-year-old driver exited the
shop’s back door and intercepted him, tackling him
and wrestling him to the parking lot pavement.
It was at that point that three other young men
intervened, kicking and punching at the driver, Det.
Horrocks said.
“One of them pulled out a handgun and said,
‘Let him go,’ ” he said. The driver refused and the
three accomplices fled the scene. The driver held
the robber until police arrived. The driver was un-
hurt except for an abrasion on his lip, Det. Horrocks
said.
A 16-year-old Ajax youth is charged with rob-
bery, wearing a disguise and possession of a dan-
gerous weapon. Police are still seeking the other
three suspects, two white males and a black male
believed to be in their late teens or early 20s.
The incident was the second time in the last few
days citizens stepped in to thwart a robbery. On
Thursday evening two men grabbed a man with a
knife who was robbing a convenience store in their
central Oshawa neighbourhood and held him for
police. A 43-year-old Oshawa man was charged in
connection with that robbery.

Tackling climate change begins with us and now
I t’s great Durham’s municipalities and
schools are taking part in Earth Hour
later this month. Each of us, however,
needs to spend time every day making a
real impact on climate change.
Earth Hour 2008 is a global initiative
where participants, on March 29 at 8 p.m.,
turn off their lights for an hour as a visible
symbol of the threat of climate change.
Participants range from individuals to
towns and cities and entire countries.
Now, industry has a huge impact on cli-
mate change, responsible for an estimated
50 per cent of Canada’s greenhouse gas
emissions, and only with industry on board
will any effort to curb them be successful.
It’s encouraging the federal government,
albeit far too slowly, is moving to address
industry’s share of the problem.
But, there’s much we as individuals can
do, and many of us are not doing simple,
daily things to help limit our contribution
to climate change.
How many of us turn our outdoor lights
on every evening, when there’s no reason
for doing so, leaving them on until morn-
ing? How many of us haven’t switched to
energy-efficient light bulbs? How many of
us fill half a washing machine with clothes
or throw in a shirt or two when we should
wait to wash a full load? And, while we’re
on the subject, use cold water whenever
possible and, unless the kids have been
playing in the mud, do you really need to
choose the lengthiest wash cycle?
From the vehicles we choose and how we
maintain them to the appliances we buy,
the list of ways in which we can help goes
on and on. If each of us committed to con-
sidering what kind of an impact we’re hav-
ing, and made efforts to limit it, together we
could make a huge difference.
It took years, even decades, of talking
about the environment before it even
entered the general consciousness. We
cannot let decades pass before taking
concrete action. We simply don’t have the
time.
It’s comforting that young people
are concerned about the issue and will
become excellent advocates for and practi-
tioners of a more sustainable lifestyle. If we
have a future, it will be because of them.
But, we shouldn’t leave it all up to future
generations. Start small if you must, but
start somewhere and start now.

Waste too complex
To the editor:
Re: ‘Region has vision of clear garbage
bags’, March 2 News Advertiser.
I appreciate the need to be more environ-
mentally friendly, but where does it end?
The article regarding the reduction of the
number of bags allowed biweekly, com-
bined with the introduction of clear gar-
bage bags, seems to be going a step too far.
Why does Durham Region insist on making
waste disposal so complicated, time-con-
suming and frustrating?
Other regions are able to place green bin
items (including diapers) in regular plastic
bags but here we must throw diapers in
the garbage (two full bags a week) and use
overpriced bags for other green bin items.
Other regions have debated using clear
garbage bags but have realized the visibility
of private items and personal documents
is an intrusion of privacy and a serious risk
for identity theft. Why do I need a bachelor
of science degree to understand what is
recyclable and what is not?
I encourage the Region to think of recy-
cling as a two-way street that needs buy-in
from the consumer and in order to get buy-
in they need waste diversion to be user-
friendly. Under today’s measures, it is not.

R RSP season is upon us. Many of us
will want to salt away a little some-
thing for our retirement, putting the
kids through school or ponying up “hush”
money for an Internet indiscretion. The
choices of where to put these hard-earned
funds can be bewildering. Consequently,
the employ of a good, sound financial
adviser is often the difference between
retiring to a Caribbean villa or a tent
trailer in Keswick. The question is, with so
many options out there, so many smiling
faces knocking on your door, how do you
know you’re in good hands?
Well, as a self-employed artist with the
financial stability of a chip truck and busi-
ness acumen that would make Britney
Spears look like a Rothschild, I’ve had to
take certain steps to insure I’m not taken
advantage of. To that end, I’ve developed
what I think is a fool-proof system for
evaluating money-men. If you employ
even half of these handy tips you can rest
assured you’re getting good bang for your
bucks.
First, unlike the greater world outside
of high finance, stereotypes in the money
arena are everything. Get a bald guy. Pref-
erably with horn-rimmed glasses. No hair
equals worry and that’s good. You don’t
want some clown with Hollywood good
looks and locks like Fabio. That guy has
obviously chiselled so many customers
out of their savings that he hasn’t a care in
the world.
You want the guy who is fretting over
your portfolio so much that you practi-
cally see the follicles leaping off his scalp.
Likewise with the glasses. You don’t
develop poor eyesight by ignoring fine
print. You want a stickler. The worse
the guy’s peepers, the better. Although
I would pull up just this side of legally
blind.
Of equal import to looks is a name.
Again, these rules seldom apply in the
outside world, but in the investment
racket they’re surefire. Almost without
question avoid people with single syllable
handles. Ron, Biff, Vance; these are not
financial advisers. These are car salesmen
and while it might be fun to go toe to toe
with one of them over some free rust-
proofing, handing them carte blanche
with your fiscal future will almost cer-
tainly land you in a boarding house eating
a plateful of Meow Mix.
Polysyllabic is your safest and best bet.
Stick with your Milton’s, your Clifford’s,
your Kenneth’s. And if at any time any one
of these asks you to please refer to him
as Milt, Cliff or Ken, show him the door.
A word to the wise -- certain unsavory
types have cottoned to this trend and have
attempted to dupe unsuspecting investors
with grandiose titles like Napoleon, Nebu-
chadrezzar and Solomon. Generally, if
your adviser has a name that sounds like
he may have at one time ruled the known
world, I would give him a pass.
Finally, I like to know a great deal about
my adviser’s personal life. I see nothing
untoward in a thorough getting-to-know-
you session followed by a discreet phone
call to Interpol. In the event you discover
that your potential money manager has
a thing for leather or pudding-wrestling
or perhaps runs a website dedicated to
the Partridge Family, so much the better.
Nothing keeps the ledger cleaner than a
little something in the closet you can use
on a rainy day.
Follow these simple rules and your gold-
en years are sure to be well in the black.

There are many good reasons to try to
eat together as a family once a day. It’s a
chance to slow down, connect and share
everyone’s day.
Increasingly, research is also showing
family meals are better for children’s
physical, emotional and mental health.
According to a study published last
month, families who eat together may have
healthier kids in the long term.
The fi ndings, which appear in the Jour-
nal of the American Dietetic Association,
suggest children who connect with their
parents at mealtimes are more likely to
have a healthier diet as young adults.
The study followed 1,700 teenagers for
fi ve years and found those who ate the most
meals with their families tended to eat bet-
ter as they got older, including eating more
fruits and vegetables.
This new research bolsters previous
studies that found children who share a
meal with family several times a week are
less likely to smoke, drink alcohol, use
drugs or become sexually active.
They also tend to do better academically
and have better mental health.
Unfortunately, while science suggests
families make more attempts to eat togeth-
er, economic forces are working against
them. According to Statistics Canada,
workers spend an average of 45 minutes
less per day with family members in 2005
than they did 20 years earlier.
The length of the workday has also ex-
panded, cutting into what was traditionally
the family dinnertime. On average, Cana-
dians now work about 30 minutes longer
each day than they did a generation ago.
Exacerbating the meal crunch is simply
the fast-paced and full lives of many fami-
lies today. Children are often involved in
more extra-curricular activities and have
more homework to get through each night,
than their parents did as kids.
So, what to do?
Start by doing some ‘investment’ cook-
ing: double a meal one night and freeze
half for later or set aside one afternoon
on the weekend to cook several meals that
can be tucked away in the freezer for busy
nights.
Next, save yourself time by purchasing
pre-cut vegetables. Yes, they cost more but
you’re more likely to use them and less
likely to be pitching out brown broccoli
next week. Even onions – the most dreaded
of kitchen chores – are available pre-
chopped and frozen. A simple meal, such as
bean burritos, can be whipped up in under
half an hour.

When kids can’t focus and are having trouble in
school they are often labeled as having a learning
disability. And these days it seems
that, more often than not, children
with problems focusing or paying
attention are given the ADHD/ADD
label.
Some children genuinely have
a complex medical condition in
which their brain works overtime,
impeding their ability to focus on a
single thought or activity. But too
many kids that are placed in the
ADHD/ADD spectrum are kids
who have simply not learned, or
have not been taught how to pay
attention.
Like reading, spelling, count-
ing and writing, paying attention is
a skill that children need to learn.
Learning to pay attention is not as
diffi cult as it sounds. It is not an
insurmountable task. The mind is
elastic; it can change, it can grow
and it can learn new skills—like
paying attention.
Here are some sim-
ple techniques to use
at home or in the class-
room that will help chil-
dren understand what
they are to do and stay
focused on the task at
hand.
• Get Their Atten-
tion. Before address-
ing your child, say his
name. When you say
the child’s name you
give him a cue that you
are about to give infor-
mation or directions.
• Repeat Instructions.
You’ve just given your
child some instructions.
Does she understand them? Have her repeat them
back to you or explain them back in her own words.
• Eyes Front. Have your child look directly at the per-
son who is speaking to them. When the eyes wan-
der, the brain follows.
• Emphasize It. When giving key instructions be sure
to repeat key words. Stretch them out. Say them
louder.
• Remove Distractions. If the classroom fi sh tank is
distracting, ask to have your child seated out of its
direct sight-line, or have it moved to another area.
ON THE HOME FRONT
Playing concentration games at home help to hone
the skills your child uses in the classroom. Have a
game night. Work on puzzles together, or do a cross-
word. Shut the TV off and spend quality time together
paying attention to what you are doing, and to each
other.

Motocross Mitchells ready to rev it up

PICKERING — With the winter
hiatus almost at an end, the moto-
cross Mitchells of Pickering are anx-
ious to rev up for a new bike season.
The Mitchell brothers -- Nathan,
14, Tristan, 7, and Michael, 16, -- will
be back on the bikes in hopes of put-
ting together another solid string of
races on the Provincial motocross
circuits where they’ve enjoyed so
much success over the past several
years.
With their mother, Kim, in tow
driving an RV hitched to a trailer
loaded with bikes, parts and other
necessities of motocross racing, the
family is on the road for much of
the spring and summer, travelling to
races throughout Canada and On-
tario, with the occasional sojourn for
meets in the northern U.S.
For Kim, a single mother and one-
time street bike rider whose kids fell
into the sport naturally, motocross
has been a family affair for the past
seven years.
“It really is a family sport. We’re
together all the time, (at the tracks)
three times a week and sometimes
five days out of seven I’m with the
kids until they go back to school in
the fall. As a single mom, (moto-
cross) keeps them in positive things,
instead of negative things, which
they possibly could be doing.”
On the leading edge of the Mitch-
ell family’s motocross tradition is
Nathan, who’s been riding for the
past seven years and competitively
for the past three, all on the Cana-
dian Motorsport Racing Club circuit.
Aboard his RM 85 Suzuki, he fin-
ished third in the provincial series
last season in the 85cc 12-to-16 years
category.
Nathan says his goal for the com-
ing race season is to improve upon
his third-place overall finish in the
provincial series.
He’s been riding ever since he re-
ceived his first motocross bike for
Christmas seven years ago.
“I just learned to ride it and I liked
it. It’s just fun,” says Nathan, a Grade
9 student at Pine Ridge Secondary
School.
Meanwhile, Tristan has been rac-
ing competitively for three years in
the 50cc 4-6 years division aboard
his Cobra 50 cc motocross bike. He
raced more than 40 times in Cana-
dian Motorsport Racing Club events
last year and won all the events he
entered. At the nationals hosted
in the Stratford area last summer,
however, it didn’t go as planned, as
Tristan fell at the start of the race and
finished well back.
“I’m hoping for better next year,”
says Tristan, a Grade 2 student at
Valley Farm Public School.
For Tristan, motocross is about
the competition as well as the social
aspect of the sport.
“I like riding on the different tracks
and the competition,” he says. “I also
like to meet new people.”
For Michael, he’s looking for bigger
and better things this season after an
off-season on the provincial moto-
cross circuit last year. Injuries, as well
as mechanical trouble, limited his
effectiveness aboard his CRF 250cc
Honda. He later dropped down into
the local Maguire’s Motorcross Rac-
ing Series and also raced at the Os-
hawa Competitive Motorsport Club
meets last year.
It’s all about the “thrill of racing”
to Michael, a Grade 11 student at
Pine Ridge.
“I like the competitiveness of it
and the people,” he says.
Ms. Mitchell says she’s like most
moms with kids in motocross, ad-
mitting there is some worry about
her kids suffering a serious injury
while on the track. But, she says
most of her fears are allayed by the
safety equipment required for each
rider, and by the fact her boys are
extremely proficient and skilful on
the track.
“They’ve been hurt a couple of
times, but it’s no different than play-
ing a different sport like football or
rugby or something. They wear a lot
of protective gear, like neck and knee
braces and the helmets they wear
are phenomenal. They’re so in con-
trol of what they’re doing but, when
they fall, I hold my breath,” she says.
As motocross racing can be an
expensive proposition, Ms. Mitch-
ell says she’s received some help
from Ultimate Toyz in Ajax and from
Fourwinds Motocross in Port Perry
to allay costs.

Silver lining for Lightning midgets at Ontario Winter Games

DURHAM — The Ontario Win-
ter Games came with a silver lin-
ing for the Durham West Light-
ning midget ‘AA’ hockey team.
The Ontario Games were host-
ed in Collingwood earlier this
month, with the weather almost
as fierce as the competition for
the gold medal in the eight-team
women’s hockey tournament at
the prestigious event.
The rigours of a triple-over-
time 1-0 victory over the Toronto
Aeros in the semifinal game, fol-
lowed by a short
rest, meant
little time to
prepare for the
gold-medal
game against
the Markham-Stouffville Stars.
The semifinal turned into the
‘game of the weekend’ as it was a
test of endurance for both teams,
which battled hard for a spot in
the gold-medal game. The Light-
ning needed a goal with 1:19
remaining in triple overtime to
finally subdue the Aeros.
In the final, the Durham girls
once again played with heart and
grit, giving it their all against a
solid Stars squad, only to fall just
short in a close 2-1 contest, giv-
ing the Lightning a well-deserved
silver medal at the Games.

the semifinal contest.
In round-robin play, the Dur-
ham West girls tied the Stratford
Aces 2-2, followed by a 5-1 win
over the Barrie Sharks. To win
their pool the Lightning midgets
needed a win against the Sud-
bury Wolves and again, after a
hard fought game, emerged as
No. 1 in Pool ‘B’. No score was
reported.

Qualifications:The incumbent will have a post-
secondary education in a related trade's field and
