The family of the 17-year-old victim erupt- ed in outrage Wednesday when the judge sentenced him to six years in prison. “It’s a slap in our face,” said Naresh Per- saud, 44, father of the victim, Kevin Persaud. “What is the value of life in our country now?” On March 4, 2006, around 11 p.m., Andrew Suedat of Pickering drove his father’s van into Persaud during a marijuana deal that went sour in Canmore Park in east Toronto. He then circled and ran over him again. Per- saud died of crushing head injuries. “It is difficult to accept, in my view, that the accused didn’t see the deceased’s prostrate body when he ran over Mr. Persaud a second time,” Superior Court Justice Christopher Speyer said yesterday. Suedat, now 20, pleaded guilty to man- slaughter on Feb. 1 as prosecutors Paul Vesa and Jason Balgopal had almost finished pre- senting their evidence at his trial on a charge of second-degree murder. After the judge left court, officers permit- ted Suedat to hug members of his family, sparking angry comments from the victim’s kin. “It’s lovely to say goodbye isn’t it?” said one female relative of Persaud’s. “We didn’t get that chance.” Suedat will serve five years, after credit for time served. The judge took into consideration that Suedat was trying to help his cousin, whom he believed to be in trouble during the dispute. “With passions at the boil, I find as a fact the accused’s judgment to have been seri- ously compromised,” he said. He also said Suedat is deeply remorseful. The victim’s family later disputed that point. -- with files from Torstar News Service A COLD DAY FOR STOPPING TRAFFIC Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Pedestrians faced bone-chilling temperatures early Thursday morning, as did crossing guard Norman Carmichael on Rosebank Road. Dubbed War of the World- views, each debate featured 81-year-old Christian Dave Hunt, an internationally renowned Biblical scholar and prophecy teacher, argu- ing the merits of his religion against well-known Hindu and Muslim authorities and University of Ontario Insti- tute of Technology assistant professor and humanist Christopher diCarlo. Scientist and creationist Frank Sherwin conducted a lecture about creationism versus evolution after his opponent, scientist and hu- manist Christopher Rheau- me, dropped out. Mr. Hunt was also the key- note speaker for three previ- ous conferences convened by local Christian Paul Mc- Gregor. Near the beginning of the debates, Mr. McGregor said to the crowd, “It’s no secret that this event is put on by Christians with an agenda -- and the agenda is that you all get to hear the truth about Christ.” Kicked off on Friday night by Mr. Hunt and Hindu scholar Budhendranauth Doobay, and moderated by broadcaster Michael Coren and local integration con- sultant Peter Koropatwa, the debates grew in intensity and the number of attendees as the weekend progressed. Almost 400 people attended Friday night’s meeting, while about 600 came to Saturday night’s debate between Mr. Hunt and Muslim scholar Shabir Ally, spilling out into the foyer of All Saints Catho- lic Secondary School. Open to the public and free of charge, the debates brought people from a va- riety of faith backgrounds and for a variety of reasons. Several people from the Cre- ation Research Institute flew in from California, while close to 25 people from Cal- vary Chapel near Rochester, N.Y., travelled to the event because they appreciate Mr. Hunt’s books and lectures and have frequently invited him to their church. “He’s great at giving grounded lectures about Biblical facts,” Tyler Goden said. “When we heard he was coming up here to Can- ada, a bunch of us decided to drive up because we like him so much.” The Rochester group was friendly and cordial, but unflattering comments by Dr. diCarlo about President George W. Bush’s profession of Christianity not lining up with his encouragement for the war in Iraq had several in the group looking alarmed and shaking their heads. Attiya, an 18-year-old Muslim from Ajax who at- tended the Saturday night debate with her parents, said she came to hear more about Christianity and to hear other people’s religious viewpoints. “It gave me a broader un- derstanding and I thought it was a fair debate. It con- firmed my own faith more,” said Attiya, referring to the debate between Mr. Ally and Mr. Hunt. Her father seemed disgruntled because he felt Muslims were portrayed by some as terrorists who pro- mote violence. Phyllis Spriggs of Burling- ton came with her husband because they have seen Mr. Hunt in several venues be- fore. “He’s solid in scripture,” she said. “There’s too much entertainment in churches these days -- young people need to think their faith through so they know where they stand.” PARTNERS Sunday March 2, 2008 10 A.M – 5 P.M • ONE DAY SHOW Ajax Convention Centre Beside the Hilton Garden Inn (Salem Rd. & 401) Traditional & Alternative Health Care + Fitness + Beauty + Healthy Eating Weight Loss + Yoga + Mental Health + Chiropractic + Audiology For exhibitor information call 905-683-5110 ext 228 or charness@durhamregion.com mind +body +spirit EXPOASK THE PROFESSIONALS PANELS DEMONSTRATIONS DURHAM FREE HEALTHY GIFT BAGS AT THE DOOR* $200 ADMISSION FEE TO BE DONATED TO CHARITY RECREATION SERVICES MindFX™ Xoçai™ (show-sigh) The ‘Healthy’ Chocolate! At about 10:15 p.m. an officer working radar duty on Kingston Road clocked a westbound vehicle at 102 km/h in a posted 70 km/h zone. Police approaching the vehicle smelled mari- juana and saw what they believed to be pot inside. They searched the vehicle and seized 37 grams of mar- ijuana, a 29-gram chunk of crack cocaine and two grams of hashish, as well as $11,000 in cash. DURHAM — A five-month investiga- tion by Durham police and Canada Post has resulted in the arrest of a contract worker who is accused of stealing and cashing more than $470,000 worth of cheques addressed to north Ajax resi- dents. It’s believed more than 150 pieces of mail involving more than 120 victims were diverted, police said Tuesday. Cheques from the government, insur- ance companies and other businesses are believed to have been stolen and then fraudulently cashed at banks throughout the GTA. The multiple thefts are believed to have totalled more than $477,000, police said. An investigation was launched late in the summer of 2007 when police de- tected a pattern in reports of lost mail; working with Canada Post, police deter- mined the lost mail incidents occurred primarily within an area in north Ajax bounded by Rossland Road, Ravenscroft Road, Harwood Avenue and Taunton Road. On Feb. 11 police charged Lauren Theresa Boucaud, 55, of Slan Avenue in Scarborough with two criminal charges -- theft of mail and breach of trust -- as well as delaying the mail, an infraction under the Canada Post Corporation Act. Former letter carrier charged with theft RSS UPDATESRSS UPDATES Get your local news and sports faster at newsdurhamregion.com But not everything in Tuesday federal budget is getting positive comments DURHAM — The federal budget was very much vacuous and empty, says Ajax-Pickering Liberal MP Mark Holland. “It was more rhetoric than anything else, and we’re left in a very precarious situation,” he said. Mr. Holland said having such a thin budget will probably not precipitate an election, but there are a number of big issues before parlia- ment, such as the environment and Afghani- stan so “there still is a possibility that we’ll be heading to the polls.” Finance Minister Jim Flaherty presented the federal Conservative budget Tuesday which included permanent extension of gas tax fund- ing and a boost to the manufacturing industry while providing infrastructure improvements. Mr. Holland said although it’s “decent news” the GO Train will be extended from Peterbor- ough to Union Station, “on a list of infrastruc- ture projects on the east end in Durham, that would be number 64 or 65. “So the things that they did do I suppose are moderately OK,” he said, “but they’re way down on the list of things that I think would be a priority for our community or Canadians.” He noted the new tax-free savings account will help the wealthy, but “the problem with that is how many of us can max out our RRSPs or our RESPs enough to have extra money to save in this type of vehicle? It’s not doing a lot to help.” Pickering-Scarborough East Liberal MP Dan McTeague said the budget is “more bluster and blarney than what Canadians can use.” He agreed with Mr. Holland about the new tax savings accounts, noting it’s “getting all the publicity.” A “strategic approach” to helping the econo- my is also lacking, Mr. McTeague said. “Infrastructure is getting very little. It’s some- thing we need in Durham.” He noted GM is making “arguably some of the most technologically advanced cars in the world. Incentives (in the budget) don’t deal with manufacturing per se, but with green technology. An over-arching technology plan is needed.” Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan said he’s “very pleased with the permanency of the gas tax monies going to municipalities because that gives us a base on which we can plan into the future.” Another positive thing “he wants to take from the budget” is the gas tax, and money for public transit and harbours means the federal government is at least thinking of infrastruc- ture needs. The Feds will also invest $10 million over two years for repairs and environmental cleanup to allow for the transfer of more small craft harbours from the federal government to inter- ested parties. Mayor Ryan un- derstands it’s a tight bud- get due to the financial realities in the country, but “having said that, $10 million for harbours, we could spend that on Frenchman’s Bay. So that’s the other side of it. That’s why I’m taking it as an indicator, as op- posed to their one-time commitment. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish says the present commitment on the federal gas tax transfer was to expire in 2014. “They’ve taken away that cap.” It will give mu- nicipalities the chance to “build it into their long- range capital forecast. Once it’s given, it’s difficult for the government to take it away.” In 2008, Durham Region received $8.2 mil- lion in gas tax money. By 2009-2010, that will rise to $16.5 million. He referred to the re-instituted train from Peterborough to Toronto as the “Flaherty ex- press,” noting that it “connects a Conservative riding with another Conservative riding.” He would have preferred extra money to extend GO service to Clarington and put more cars on existing trains. “It would be a much more valuable contribution to transit in Dur- ham.” The Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade has identified several promising initiatives in the budget, with relief promised for everyone from small businesses to larger manufacturers. “Sixty-five per cent of our members are small businesses, so we certainly welcome the promise to streamline the record-keeping re- quirements for motor vehicle expense claims,” said Joan Wideman, co-chairwoman of the board’s government relations committee. And some of them are right here in Pickering. Gabrielle Taylor was diagnosed with two forms of flesh-eating disease on her scalp and in her bowel when she was less than a week old, and basically spent the first 15 months of her life at the Hospital for Sick Children. A few months after her return home, Gabi’s mother, Trish TarBush, and her husband, Jason Taylor, began seeking out a day care for their little girl, but feared no one would take her. That was until they found Bayfair Day- care in Pickering. Two-and-a-half years later, at a cheque presentation after the day care raised $1,000 for Sick Kids, Ms. TarBush explained she was lucky to find Bayfair. She realized flesh-eating disease has a persona that can scare people away, but Bayfair not only accepted the little girl, it also “welcomed her back with open arms” when various procedures required time off. For example, Gabi had to leave for five or six months last year for tissue-expan- sion procedures on her scalp and Gabi was welcomed back, no questions asked. Melody Hicks, a manager of Child Health Services in the Neonatal Inten- sive Care Unit at Sick Kids (where Gabi stayed the first 10 months of her life), explained a message Sick Kids is try- ing to spread is continuing care into the community. Sick Kids not only cares for the children in its care, but provides sup- port to families as well, and believes in a full circle of care, one that goes beyond the medical aspect. And she saw that alive and well at Bay- fair upon accepting the donation. Not only did Bayfair decide to put money raised in its yearly fundraiser toward the hospital that cared for Gabi, but the day care workers also openly dis- cussed Gabi’s unique situation with the children during its cheque presentation. Young children are highly impression- able, and judging by the teachings at this day care, these youngsters will most likely grow up with loving hearts and open minds. It was heart-warming to see Gabi bouncing around and playing with the other children at the day care and being accepted by the other kids. With a day care like Bayfair accept- ing her in the first place, teaching the children about her unique situation, but reminding them she’s just as special as them, it’s no wonder Gabi has grown into a happy and bright little girl. And the care provided by the wonder- ful staff at Sick Kids definitely didn’t hurt. Kristen Calis’s column appears every third Friday. E-mail kcalis@durhamregion.com. New business good for Pickering’s bottom line T he re-location of a large company from Toronto to Pickering is a won- derful boost to the city’s economy that will pump tax dollars into the City’s coffers and create some jobs here. Mayor Dave Ryan had good news indeed in his annual address to the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade on Tuesday: engineer- ing giant Aker Kvaerner ASA is moving its Canadian division to Pickering. The company will build an 87,000-square-foot building on Clements Road and, while the division currently has 60 employees, in less than two years that number is expected to almost double. Aker Kvaerner, based in Norway, has 24,000 employees and earned about $10 billion US last year. It’s one of the world’s largest providers of engineering and con- struction services, technology products and integrated solutions. Aker Kvaerner’s core businesses are made up of industries such as nuclear, oil and gas, power generation and mining and metals. Canadian division president Bob Vander- land at the board of trade meeting said Aker Kvaerner Chemetics “designs and builds certain types of chemical plants” and the Pickering facility will concentrate on manu- facturing processes and equipment. “We employ a lot of technologists. We’re looking for skilled trades, like welders,” Mr. Vanderland said. That’s music to the ears of skilled trades- people in Pickering and the general area who perhaps have a long commute. Mayor Ryan in his address noted that “to be more than a bedroom community, we need to strengthen and expand our eco- nomic base.” This is certainly true, and with the coming of Aker Kvaerner Chemetics, in addition to the 300 new skilled jobs created in the city last year, Pickering’s prospects are looking rosier. ••• It’s ironic that the mayor’s announcement regarding Aker Kvaerner Chemetics, and his comment quoted above about Pickering going beyond the bedroom community status, comes a week or so after a Seaton Advisory Committee meeting. Ironic because Pickering and Durham councillors have been in the news recently pressing for, no demanding, jobs in Seaton before hous- ing. Without them, Seaton could become another bedroom community and not a model of sustainable development. Durham Region Chairman Roger Ander- son attended the advisory committee meeting and dramatically maintained that not one toilet will go in Seaton before a job. It’s encouraging to have the chairman go out of his way to again make this point and contribute to the united front on the issue. I am not narrow minded. I am well aware that change is a constant factor. Courage and conviction are excellent qualities, but you wear your Liberal colours on your sleeve. You missed my point entirely. Since 1972 there have been Conservative and Liberal governments which have governed for lengthy periods of time. The Chretien years are the most recent. Higgins Development Partners bought the prop- erty from O’Shanter Devel- opment, which had wanted to build houses on the site. During his annual ad- dress to the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade at Annan- dale Golf and Curling Club on Tuesday, Mayor Steve Parish said, “We’ll have some exciting announce- ments on this land in the coming months. It’s what we need in Ajax and Dur- ham Region.” The Town had fought O’Shanter’s plans to build houses on the property, which runs on the east side of Harwood Avenue, south of Rossland Road. Speaking to about 125 people, the mayor noted the Town has fought to preserve land set aside for employment purposes. De- velopers have tried to have the designation converted to residential so houses can be built. “Ajax has been fighting a long and strenuous battle to preserve our employ- ment lands. Development will come to Durham and we must have employment land zoned and serviced, because development will come,” Mayor Parish said. Mayor Parish noted the first phase of the Lo- blaws warehouse, at Salem Road and Hwy. 401, about 800,000 square feet, will open soon and have about 700 employees. Loblaws has reached an agreement with Atlas Logistics Retail Services LLC to operate the facility. Along with other proj- ects, “These are some important developments because of our determina- tion to preserve our em- ployment lands and getting them ready to go,” Mayor Parish said. Ajax, he said, is working on attracting more tourists, pointing to the Slots at Ajax Downs, the redevelopment of the Picov’s horse-racing track and the “redevelop- ment of Pickering Village as an arts, culture and heri- tage centre. “There will be a lot of reasons to come and rec- reate in a whole variety of ways in Ajax,” the mayor stated. Preserving and pro- tecting the environment has been a commitment of Ajax council and staff. “Unless we respect the environment, we can’t have a healthy, vibrant community. We believe in firm urban boundaries,” he said, adding land outside the boundary is part of the greenbelt. The Town is also building LEED-certified buildings. “All of this is being done because Ajax has really been fortunate to develop some very significant non- tax revenues,” he said, pointing to being a share- holder in Veridian Corpo- ration and money received from the slots. “You cannot do all these exciting things in life with- out financial resources,” Mayor Parish added. “It al- lows us to do a number of things.” TRUCKLOAD FLOOR MODEL SALE! By Melissa Mancini mmancini@durhamregion.com DURHAM — One local bride-to- be calls herself a cheap date. That’s because Sharon Matchim and her fiance, Greg Burnett, are getting married on Feb. 29, leap year day. Ms. Matchim says since she and Mr. Burnett will only have an an- niversary every four years, she won’t be expecting yearly gifts, but there will be no excuses for Mr. Burnett if he forgets the special day when it happens. “He’s not allowed to forget,” Ms. Matchim said. The couple chose the date be- cause they are self-described “sci- ence geeks” who understand why there are 29 days in February every four years. They met while studying environmental science at Trent Uni- versity in Peterbourgh, but were just friends until years after graduation. The day also falls between their birthdays and is around the time they celebrate the anniversary of the day they started dating. The couple wanted to get mar- ried last leap year day, but their lives were busy that year and they had to wait. Their wedding will take place at Pickering’s City Hall and they will celebrate with 100 guests at a restau- rant afterwards. The fact that their anniversary will only happen every four years is an- other reason the couple chose the day -- four is a lucky number for them. Both of their hockey sweater numbers have the digit in it and their dates of birth are four years and four days apart. And there is a certain romantic element to only having a celebration every four years. “We will always be newlyweds,” jokes Ms. Matchim. Ms. Matchim said she still has some questions about her impend- ing marriage, but not the type one would expect. “If we make it to 50 regular years, will we still receive a congrats notice from the government?” asked the bride-to-be. Famous Leapies Did you know that one of Oshawa’s mayors was born on a leap year? Robert D. Preston was mayor in 1926-1928 and celebrated his 10th birthday while in office. Local residents are invited to attend the infor- mation meeting on March 4 from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Kingsview United Church, at 505 Adelaide Ave. E., in Oshawa. This will provide participants with an over- view of the program and a chance to ask questions. The group sessions begin on March 28, running every Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for six weeks at the same location. Registration is required and should be done in advance as space is limited. It’s a comfortable low-heat sauna that you can place in any room of your home. “My patient lost 12 pounds in three weeks. I had predicted it wouldn’t work, but once she started to detoxify it became very easy,” reports Dr. Julie Wyatt ND, of the Markham Village Naturopathic Center. The doctors treating obesity and its related symptoms have discovered that the toxic load of chemicals and heavy metals we accumulate over a lifetime are actually a primary cause of weight gain and weight retention. “Our clients have been using it for years to detoxify,” says Pat Kuebler of the Profeet Healing Centre in Ajax. “We’ve also seen phenomenal results with skin quality, pain relief and weight- loss. And of course it’s the number one way to prevent cancer because it removes so many toxins from the body,” she adds. SaunaRay Inc., the Ontario company that built Profeet’s sauna, has developed the technology by working with medical doctors and conducting front-line medical research. “These are different than what you see in big- box stores,” says Kuebler. “SaunaRay guarantees no chemicals, no pesticides, no lacquers, nothing from China that can heat up and vapourize inside. This unit is so safe it’s actually considered medical-grade.” The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto uses SaunaRay units to train graduating naturopaths in sauna detoxifi cation therapy. These saunas are a revolution in heat therapy because they plug into regular outlets and require no drains or vents. They are much more tolerable than traditional hot saunas. They’re kept just warm enough - around body temperature. The natural ceramic heat causes profuse sweating and detoxifi cation. “In the fi rst 3 months of using my SaunaRay unit I lost 15 pounds,” says Health Practitioner Patricia McAllister-Smith of Newmarket. “I tell people I ‘melted’ it off because you sweat so much it actually burns calories” (The Journal of the American Medical Association reports 600 calories burned in 30 minutes of continuous sweating). To know whether your weight might be related to chemical exposure, some questions you can ask yourself are whether you’ve moved into a new home, or recently renovated. Have you lived in a home with new carpets or kitchen cabinets? Do you normally drive new cars? Detoxifying may not make everyone lose weight, but it will improve the function of every organ of your body. Profeet will showcase its SaunaRay unit March 2nd at the Health Matters Expo. Christianity vs. Hinduism Dave Hunt, a resident of Oregon who worked for 20 years as an accountant, has had close to 40 books published about Bibli- cal research and prophecy. A member of the Plymouth Brethren, he travels the world speaking in churches, at conferences and participating in some de- bates. During Friday night’s debate, Mr. Hunt claimed the Hindu term karma is amoral, senseless and hopeless because “karma per- petuates sin, inflicting the same sin that a person inflicted on somebody else back onto them.” Budhendranauth Doobay said that karma is what determines a person’s place and des- tiny in life but never gave a clear explanation of what it means. “Some of the pictures depicting the Hindu religion are shockingly evil. “Have you ever seen someone with shrunk- en human skulls or severed heads? It’s a bit frightening,” said Mr. Hunt as he displayed a copy of Hinduism Today with serpents in the hair of one of the Hindu gods. Mr. Doobay, who grimaced and put his head in his hands while he listened to Mr. Hunt, responded by saying that, in Hinduism, the serpent represents longevity. “The serpents in the hair represent human vices -- hate, anger and others -- that we try to conquer. “You don’t have to go to church to be Hindu, you just live by the golden rule. It doesn’t matter what religion you are,” said Mr. Doobay, a cardiologist who started a place of Hindu worship in Scarborough. He told Mr. Hunt to “open up your mind. Why is your religion better than mine?” and said that Hindus don’t believe in heaven or hell. Mr. Hunt retorted that there are two destinations -- heaven and hell -- and that only faith in Jesus Christ can take a person to heaven. Christianity vs. Humanism Mr. Hunt opened his debate with humanist Christopher diCarlo by saying it’s totalitarian for atheists to dictate that children shouldn’t be taught religion in school. “The problem with the atheists’ debate about evolution is that there’s no proof for the origin of the species. How could even one cell, such a complex miracle, come into existence by chance?” said Mr. Hunt. Mr. diCarlo countered that it’s more impor- tant to live one’s life as a decent person, treat- ing others well, than to worry about whether God really does exist or not. Mr. diCarlo is a University of Ontario In- stitute of Technology assistant professor and the author of several books, including ‘How to Become a Really Good Pain in the Ass: a Guide to Critical Thinking’. He defines him- self as an age theist who is an atheist in regard to all defined religions, but an agnostic about the reason for existence. “My purpose here today is not to offend religious sensitivities. “ I’m a former Catholic myself and was an altar boy for five years. All religions have flaws in human reasoning. “I’d love to know there was a God who ex- isted and when I died, he’d take care of me,” said Mr. diCarlo. He read several Bible verses about varying topics which he said contra- dicted one another. “If it makes you feel good to believe in heaven, then go ahead. But don’t think I’m so wrong that I need to be helped. I was raised as a Catholic and I never remember anywhere in the New Testament where it said ‘Verily I say unto you, go into foreign lands and kill people for their oil,” he said in reference to President George Bush. Mr. diCarlo’s explanation for why people believe in God goes back to “caveman angst. “A caveman probably looked at a dead man, rotting, with flies buzzing all around him, and thought that will be me in a few years. Hence, the need to believe in immortality.” Mr. Hunt debated Mr. diCarlo’s consequent line of reasoning that God forces himself on people by threat of punishment. “Foreknowledge is not the same as pre- destination. God can’t make you believe in Him -- that can only come about through our willingness,” he said. The evolution theory Mr. Hunt took a break when Frank Sher- win, a zoologist and head of the Institute for Creation Research in San Diego, California, gave a detailed lecture trying to disprove the theory of evolution based on a lack of evidence for macroevolution, the theory that species evolved from one another. “There’s an absence of transitional forms, and when they do appear they’re sudden and abrupt,” he said. Mr. Sherwin said 95 per cent of fossil re- cords are clams and recent mudstone re- search supports the creation flood model. Mr. Sherwin was raised in a secular house- hold and became a Christian while serving with the American army in Vietnam. After conversion, he remained an evolu- tionist, but read some information that made him question the validity of macroevolution. “I developed an insane interest in biology, went to college and got a degree in biology. Then I went to graduate school for zoology, including a course on evolution, and studied with a class full of Darwinists. I believe the Genesis account that the world was built in six days,” he said in an interview. Christianity vs. Islam The grand finale, a debate between Mr. Hunt and Shabir Ally, an imam and host of the television show Let the Quran Speak, began with Mr. Hunt tearing down Moham- med the prophet as a self-serving despot who was responsible for the writing of extreme Quranic verses. “Mohammed told one man to divorce his wife so he could marry her and he ordered an attack on a group of people during Ramadan although the Quran explicitly forbids war during Ramadan. “The history of slaughter is Islam. There have been more people killed in eastern Eu- rope and north Africa by Muslims than Hitler killed during World War Two,” said Mr. Hunt. Mr. Ally responded by saying that Vatican II and the United Church recognize Islam as one of the major world religions and said that God informs Muslims through reason as well as scripture. “Our interpretation should be inter-textual and in the context of our cultural setting.” He read a number of Bible verses detailing rife violence and said that Samson, an Israel- ite prophet who killed many Philistines, was the first suicide bomber. “There were more killed by him than were killed during the whole 911 incident.” He said that Christianity is much more denigrating toward women than Islam, quot- ing several strict verses written by the apostle Paul, and explained that Muslim women wear burkas and head scarves to protect them- selves from unwarranted advances. He said that, in some ways, even Jesus was violent. A heated debate ensued about the validity of Christ’s death and resurrection, with Mr. Ally raising questions about the ability to die after the number of hours Christ hung on the cross. He discussed the theory that Christ was put in a tomb and then walked out three days later. Despite the crescendo rising at times, all four debates were peaceful and informative. Organizer Paul McGregor said he’s looking forward to holding a similar event next year, which would mark the fifth time he’s con- vened public debates on religion in Durham Region. To help you get in the mood for the “blooming” season, The Home Depot Canada is sharing the three colour trends for Spring/Summer 2008, so get ready to dec- orate. Natural Life. This par- ticular colour trend and mood is all about pared down simplicity - an awareness of sustainable, natural materials that provide a soft- edged, earthy and fundamental feel. Natural colors of browns, taupes and beiges provide the perfect backdrop for colour in grey/blues and greens. Colourful accents include red, orange and the introduction of yellow. Natural Life provides the basis and core for all The Home Depot’s kitchens and baths, flooring and outdoor rooms. Coastal Chic. This colour trend and mood is refreshing, simple, nostalgic, and breezy - where a cool, calm environment is decorated with washed, faded linens, subtle stripes and simple patterns. Weathered wood, hand painted ceramics, comfortable pil- lows and textured rugs add intrigue. Colour combinations include shades of blues from the “coast” mixed with greens, yellow and neutrals. Contrasts of dark and light woods, played up against the various shades of blues and greens with polished chrome finishes provide the perfect Coastal palette. Coastal Chic is the perfect look for bath, paint, décor and the outdoors. Summer Savories. The delicious tastes of gelato and fresh summertime fruits like watermelon and strawberries provide an inspirational backdrop for this colour trend theme. Summer Savories is the place to brighten up any assortment. Used carefully and sparingly, Summer Savories can and will add that bright pop you’ve been looking for. Great for pillows, area rugs, outdoor accessories and lighting. Paint, wallpaper and wall décor can also express these savories in a playful way. More décor, design and colour inspiration is available online at homedepot.ca. homeWEET When it comes to getting your furnace cleaned, cheaper is NEVER better. Many companies in the heating and air condition- ing industry employ untrained, inexperienced technicians. Your annual furnace cleaning and safety inspection takes time and should be performed with care. An average cleaning should take a qualified licensed technician approximately one hour. SURFACE CLEANING IS NOT A FURNACE CLEANING. Proper maintenance involves disassembling parts to get to areas that can’t be reached when resting in its usual place. The purpose of cleaning your fur- nace is to ensure that your furnace is working as efficiently and safely as possible. Rodmans Heating and Air Conditioning cares about your safety and comfort. To arrange a proper and thorough cleaning of your furnace, please contact us at 905-683-3641. Are they stealing money from you? The construction boom is taking place to deal with the board’s aim of meeting re- duced primary class sizes. Student growth combined with smaller classes means more classrooms will be required in coming years. Construction will begin this spring at about half the schools and the remainder of the construction will start in the spring of 2009, said David Visser, superintendent of facilities services, at the Durham District School Board’s meeting Monday. “Future enrolment was our biggest con- sideration when choosing which schools would be given more classrooms -- that and school capacities,” Mr. Visser said . Day-care locations and students from out of area who attend the schools was another big factor when considering additions. Al- though some Durham schools need one or two additional classrooms, Mr. Visser said it’s not financially feasible to do major construction for smaller projects, so funds that were allocated for a particular school can be used for other schools. Three schools in Ajax, two in Pickering, five in Whitby, three in Oshawa, two in Scu- gog, one in Brock and one in Uxbridge will have three to eight new classrooms built. • Carruthers Creek, Lester. B. Pearson and Lord Elgin public schools in Ajax are slated for additions. • Altona Forest and Westcreek public schools in Pickering; and Bellwood, Fall- ingbrook, John Dryden, Pringle Creek and Winchester public schools in Whitby are to receive additional classrooms. • Also in line for classroom additions are Harmony Heights, Stephen Saywell and Walter E. Harris public schools in Oshawa, Cartwright Central and S.A. Cawker public schools in Scugog, McCaskill’s Mills Public School in Brock, and Joseph Gould Public School in Uxbridge. This star in the making has al- ready been the lead in several local plays and he now has his sights on the Rodgers and Ham- merstein musical ‘The Sound of Music’. Deffett is auditioning in the spring for a part as one of the Trapp family children. A part in this major musical would be a huge break, but Deffett is primar- ily interested in the role because he just loves performing. “When you go onto the stage and see the crowd watching you it just gives you a good feeling inside. It makes you happy,” says Deffett. At his audition, Deffett is sing- ing ‘The Sound of Music’ classics ‘My Favourite Things’ and ‘Do Re Mi’. He is currently working on perfecting the songs with his voice coach. This Grade 8 student has al- ready had a part in six theatre pro- ductions put on by the Civic Light Opera Company. At his school, he has had the lead role in every one of the school plays put on in the last three years. “All he does at home is sing and dance,” says his mother Leah Def- fett. While Deffett’s main passion is musical theatre, he currently fills his schedule with a diverse quantity of activities, including martial arts, magic performances and helping out kids who have mental disabilities. Deffett is part of a program called the ‘Pickering High School Buddies’ that has him working with another stu- dent on a regular basis. “We go in with mentally chal- lenged kids and we do the art program with them,” Deffett says. “It’s a lot of fun because they so nice.” On top of all that, Deffett is currently working towards per- forming a magic act at children’s parties. Anyone interested in hiring him can e-mail him at dazzlingdean@hotmail.com. submitted photo Don’t let his age fool you, 13-year-old Dean Deffett is no stranger to the stage. Interpreting playwright’s poetry on stage By Christy Chase cchase@durhamregion.com DURHAM — In 1944, Tennes- see Williams had his first major, critical and popular success -- The Glass Menagerie. In 1945, the play won the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, just the first of many awards the playwright would collect in his career. Several movies have been made from the play, too. Now Oshawa Little Theatre is staging the award-wining drama, which opens Feb. 28 and runs until March 15, with D’Arcy Smyth directing. The Glass Menagerie concerns a dysfunctional family, mother, son and daughter, abandoned by the bread-winning father and doing their best to survive the Depres- sion in St. Louis. There’s Amanda, a domineering mother, Laura, a disabled daughter, and Tom, a re- bellious son. It is considered to be autobiographical, as Williams’s situation was similar -- a father who wasn’t around much, a domi- nating mother and a mentally ill sister, all struggling to make ends meet during the 1930s. Smyth said the son “is caught between his desire for indepen- dence and his sense of respon- sibility” to his mother and sister, especially his sister, who walks with a limp and is terribly shy. The mother pushes the daughter to meet men and talks Tom into find- ing an appropriate suitor for her. When Tom brings home a friend from work, it appears she might get her wish. The title refers to the crystal ani- mals Laura collects and prefers to people. Known as a memory play, the drama features monologues by Tom who is remembering the events pictured in the play. It’s a play Smyth is familiar with. “My first encounter with Ten- nessee Williams was in 1966 when I was asked to play the gentleman caller,” he said. He also directed another award- winning Williams play, A Streetcar Named Desire, for OLT in 1976. Smyth said he enjoys the “tre- mendous challenge” that direc- tors, actors and the production crew face when staging Williams’s play. The playwright concerned himself in detail with everything about his plays, from the words to the staging to the set, sound and lighting, Smyth said. “Tennessee Williams is really a poetic writer,” he said. “His words are beautiful. It’s a joy to hear the words. It’s a joy to read the words.” Transferring that poetry onto the stage are several veteran actors in Durham. Judith Edmondson, a seasoned actor and director, plays Amanda, the mother. Last season, she played England’s Elizabeth I in Elizabeth Rex. Steve Foote plays Tom, a role he played some years ago with the Borelians in Port Perry. He’s appeared with theatre groups throughout Durham and beyond. Tracy Rankin makes her debut with OLT as Laura. She’s appeared with theatre groups in Toronto and with Durham Shoe- string Performers before and also works in film and TV. Lincoln Trudeau, in his seventh appear- ance with OLT, plays Jim, the gen- tleman caller. He was last seen in OLT’s production of Cosi. Smyth said he’s got a “hard- working and dedicated crew” working on the set, lighting, sound and costumes for the show. They’ve won back-to- back crowns, including the Durham West Lightning 14th Annual Girls’ Hockey Tournament. In the finals, Durham West shutout Wil- lowdale 1-0. The bantams had to overcome a number of hurdles, including a 1-0 loss to Willowdale in the first game of the round- robin and a 0-0 draw against Nepean in the sec- ond. In a must-win game against Cornwall, Durham West prevailed 5-2. Hard work paced the local girls to a 3-2 semi-final victory over Kingston. In mid-January, the squad captured the Cam- bridge Roadrunners 14th Annual Girls’ Hockey Tournament, edging the Waterloo Ravens 2-1. They went undefeated to finals and did not give up a goal.
