Regional departments
meet budget guidelines
‘I think taxpayer
affordability is on
all of our minds’:
Mayor Pearce
By Reka Szekely
rszekely@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — Durham residents
are looking at a 4.8 per cent gen-
eral property tax increase for the
Regional portion of their tax bill,
about $84 more than in 2007 on
an average $280,000 home.
That doesn’t include waste
and transit, the rates for which
vary among the municipalities.
Those two items would bring the
increase to just more than five
per cent, or about $105 on that
$280,000 home.
All of the Region’s departments
were able to meet the guidelines
set for them in the fall, as did
the police, allowing the Finance
and Administration Committee
to cut budget talks from three
days to two this week.
Committee chairwoman and
Scugog Mayor Marilyn Pearce
said she thought the process
went smoothly.
“I think taxpayer affordability
is on all of our minds, all of the
time,” she said.
“At the same time we’re aware
of the pressure Durham has be-
cause of growth.”
The 4.8 per cent increase is
slightly higher than the 4.4 per
cent guideline set by the Region
in the fall. Most of the difference
between the two figures is a re-
sult of provincially downloaded
services, primarily the Ontario
Disability Support Program,
which the Province is in the pro-
cess of uploading.
Durham’s conservation au-
thorities initially came in $81,000
over their guideline and, after
addressing the committee, were
allowed to keep just under half
of that in their budget.
“They’re feeling growth pres-
sure from a lot of provincial leg-
islation and from enhanced con-
cern from the public on the envi-
ronment,” said Mayor Pearce.
Though the committee will
look at waste and transit on Feb.
27, councillors already weighed
in on Durham Region Transit’s
budget this week.
The property tax portion of
DRT funding is expected to in-
crease by 9.5 per cent to $30.1
million per year. On the average
home, that will mean about $10
more.
In Oshawa, where the tran-
sit tax impact is the greatest at
about $187 on the average home,
homeowners will pay $1 less. In
Uxbridge, where homeowners
currently pay about $65 on that

Studying the Petticoat Creek Watershed
It’s time has come,
with $10k from City
PICKERING — The Petticoat
Creek watershed is the only one
in Pickering not to have been
studied or undergoing a study,
but that will soon change.
The Planning and Development
Committee recently approved a
$10,000 grant to the Toronto and
Region Conservation Authority to
help undertake the study, which
will cost between $50,000 and
$60,000.
The City’s funding was set aside
in the 2007 budget but will have to
go to Council for final approval.
Others contributing to the
study are Durham and York Re-
gions and the Town of Markham.
The Petticoat Creek watershed
is located between the Rouge and

Frenchman’s Bay watersheds.
The southern part is mostly de-
veloped but the northern section
cannot be touched since it’s with-
in the Agricultural Preserve. City
staff noted the study will provide
strategies to preserve, maintain
and enhance sustainability of the
watershed.
In a letter to the City, Gary
Bowen, TRCA watershed special-
ist for the Duffins and Carruthers
Creek Task Forces, said the over-
all study design and terms of ref-
erence for the study are currently
being drawn up. The TRCA plans
to build upon knowledge gained
from past studies on the Duffins,
Carruthers and Rouge water-
sheds.
Ward 2 City Councillor Doug
Dickerson expressed concern
with providing funding before a
work plan is in place, but plan-
ning and development director
Neil Carroll said he believes se-
curing the money is a good idea,
especially since the TRCA would
like to have confirmation of its
funding partners.
The Region of Durham initiated a Water and Wastewater Master Planning study in 2006 to identify a
preferred water and wastewater servicing strategy for all urban areas in the Region to the year 2021,
with consideration of strategic oversizing to service future growth beyond 2021. This Master Planning
study is being undertaken in accordance with the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process,
which includes a comprehensive public consultation program.
Public Information Centres (PICs) were previously held in June 2006 and May 2007 to receive
comment on the proposed approach to identifying and evaluating alternative water and wastewater
servicing strategies. The alternative strategies have now been evaluated, and the Region is holding a
final round of PICs in February and March of 2008 to present the evaluation results and the preferred
water and wastewater servicing strategy for public input.
Each PIC will focus on the municipal water and wastewater systems for the municipality in which it is
being held. The PICs will be an open house format, with a formal presentation beginning at 6:00 p.m.
Staff from Durham Region as well as the study consultants (KMK Consultants) will be available to
answer questions. This final round of PICs will be held in each area municipality as follows:

Since Pickering and Ajax are serviced by the York Durham Sewage System (YDSS), which jointly
services the Region of York, the PICs being held in Pickering and Ajax will also have representatives
from York Region present to discuss the coordinated approach to planning the YDSS.
Comments received during this final round of PICs will be considered by the Region prior to finalizing
the preferred water and wastewater servicing strategy. The servicing strategy will be documented in a
Water and Wastewater Master Plan report that will be made available for a 30-day public review
period in the Spring of 2008, and will then be submitted to Regional Council for approval.

Appeals court upholds child porn conviction
By Jeff Mitchell
jmitchell@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — Police acted prop-
erly in questioning a man suspected
of child pornography offences, On-
tario’s top court has ruled in uphold-
ing his conviction and sentence.
Justices with the Ontario Court
of Appeal rejected arguments that
Robert Horvat, 29, was inappropri-
ately detained and questioned by
Durham police in 2005. Police were
investigating a tip from a Whitby
computer technician who’d found
images of child pornography on a
laptop that had been dropped off for
repairs.
When officers showed up at his
Brantford office, Mr. Horvat admit-
ted he was the laptop’s user. He was
arrested and charged that day.
Mr. Horvat was convicted of pos-
sessing and making child porn -- a
Superior Court judge ruled that in
transferring downloaded images to
other media he was in effect re-cre-
ating the images through duplica-
tion -- and sentenced to 18 months
in jail.
In imposing the sentence Justice
Myrna Lack cited a previous child-
porn conviction against the man.
Mr. Horvat, who has been diagnosed
as a pedophile, was also placed on
probation and put on the national
sex offender registry for 20 years.
The appeals court also upheld the
sentence.
Mr. Horvat had been free while
awaiting the outcome of his appeal.

O ne of Durham Region Transit’s
major goals is to get people out
of their cars and on buses. And,
they succeeded with me last year, albeit
for a brief time.
I was a second-year journalism stu-
dent at Durham College and the UPASS
had just kicked in. Every college and
university student on campus pays a
mandatory $100 for transit along with
their tuition fees. In return, they get
unlimited use of local transit, except for
GO trains. The students pay whether
they use transit or not.
So I weighed my options, comparing
the cost of parking and gas to taking the
bus and, not surprisingly, the free bus
came out on top.
I still drove to the GO station daily
because the winding local route from
my home in south Ajax simply took too
long. Occasionally I’d give in and drive
to school, but after six years of absence
from local buses, I was once again a fan
of Durham transit.
It was relatively fast, it was convenient
and, best of all, it was affordable.
And, that’s what the Region wants for
transit as a whole. But, it’s faced with
that old transit paradox: we need more
riders for a better system, but we need a
better system to draw in more riders.
Since Regional officials can’t force
people out of their cars at gunpoint and
on to buses, it’s obvious that the best
option is to build a better system.
Should local transit have amalgamat-
ed sooner? Come up with a rapid tran-
sit plan sooner? Sure. But, we deal with
what we have now and what we have is
a young system and officials working as
hard as they can to improve it.
It may seem like we haven’t gotten
our fair share from the feds and the
Province. The $5 million the Region is
getting to create a transit plan seems
paltry compared to our neighbours,
who have gotten more than 20 times as
much.
But, once we have a plan, we’ll start
seeing those bigger dollar figures. The
capital cost for a bus rapid transit sys-
tem would be around $175 million. The
Province is considering kicking in $80
million for that.
And, although the feds haven’t com-
mitted a dollar figure to it, Finance
Minister and local MP Jim Flaherty was
clear that once the plan is complete,
funds can start flowing fairly quickly.
That’s not to say that all of the
Region’s transit woes will be fixed by a
one-time infusion of cash from upper-
tier governments. With about 40 buses
that are 16 years old or older, replacing
them represents a huge investment.
But, once we have those core, heavy-
use routes in place, we can work on
improving service on community
routes and in the Region’s rural areas.
Mobility is a huge challenge for poor
people in smaller or rural communities
and it’s absolutely essential that they
have options.
For now, recent route reductions have
really hurt residents that depend on it.
And, it hurts even more that they’ll be
paying more for less service.
But, we’re making progress. It hurts
and we all wish it was faster, but it’s
coming. And when it does, more resi-
dents will choose to leave their cars at
home, or forgo owning one altogether,
because it just makes more sense.

Think of your neighbours when heavy snow falls in our community
W ith two weather wallops in the
last week and six weeks of winter
yet to go, Ajax and Pickering resi-
dents need to remember that some mem-
bers of our community are stranded when
there’s a heavy snowfall.
Many seniors and people with disabilities
aren’t able to shovel snow and some rely
on others, often family members, neigh-
bours and private firms, to bale them out
when old man winter spreads a thick white
blanket on the ground.
However, some have no one at all they
can rely upon and are literally house-
bound when bad weather hits. Consider
these people, your neighbours, when
you’re shovelling your driveway and pitch
in if you can. If you have a snowblower,
become a neighbourhood hero, as many
of you already are, by thinking of the
elderly. At the very least, check in with
them to ensure they’re OK and don’t need
anything. This is a special invitation to the
younger people in our town and city to
shovel seniors’ walks and driveways if you
know they can’t or have no one to do it.
It’s hard for younger folks to imagine,
but for seniors and others who have to get
to medical and other important appoint-
ments, a feeling of dread sets in when a
big storm is expected and there’s no one to
shovel their driveway. They’ll be tremen-
dously grateful to answer the door when it’s
you offering to shovel. Better yet, just do it
and be assured your good deed is appreci-
ated.
Of course, some seniors rely on snow
shovelling services provided by the City of
Pickering and the Town of Ajax. We heard
from a couple of unhappy seniors who
rely on the service following the Feb. 1
storm that the work wasn’t being done as
promised by a certain time or that when it
was done the shovelers did a poor job. In
Pickering, one woman noted the shovelers
simply didn’t arrive on Friday, Feb. 1 and
she missed an appointment. She made a
phone call on Saturday and was assured
it would be done by noon after explaining
she had another appointment. It wasn’t
and she notes she and her husband were
“housebound for two days, missed two
appointments and were very stressed.”
Now, obviously this was a larger-than-
normal storm and one can imagine that
the workers had a lot on their plates. But,
if people pay for this service, the resources
should be there to do it.
If you know of a senior who could use the
help, consider them when a big storm hits.

Regional council
not protecting water
To the editor:
At its meeting March 7, 2007, Durham
Regional council endorsed a resolution
presented to it by Kairos Durham Chapter.
It was one of over 120 Canadian cities to
endorse this resolution. Council resolved,
in part, that “access to clean water is a basic
human right...” and that “fresh water is ... a
public trust and a collective responsibility.”
I spent about four hours last Wednesday
listening to many of the delegations that
presented to council objections to the
establishment of an incinerator in Courtice.
I understand the incinerator would burn
our residual garbage, produce minimal
power and produce considerable hazard-
ous waste that would have to be disposed
of.
Many of the delegations indicated con-
cerns about the effect of the incinerator’s
emissions on our air, land and water.
Last year council resolved to protect
water. This year it ignored cautions about
the quality of our water. Very disturbing.

PICKERING — Two big storms in less than a week
meant a lot of snow in Pickering. Clockwise from top,
clearing the snow away was a lot easier for those with
the right equipment, in this case a truck with a blade in
the Pickering Village United Church parking lot. Spruce
Hill Road resident Donna Sguigna snapped this shot on
Wednesday of a fox that somehow climbed on top of her
backyard cabana. The snow was no problem for large
vehicles, but Ashanti Shields from Notre Dame Catholic
Secondary School had a challenge on his bike.

Does this look familiar?
Most people fail to realize the physical demands the golf swing places on the body.
Statistics show that 53 per cent of male and 45 per cent of female golfers suffer from
back pain. If you want to improve your game this season now is the time to get started.
Whether you are looking to add yards to your drive or eliminate those nagging pains,
you need to begin on the right path.
Here is the path to proper conditioning for golf: Establish proper posture and fl exibility;
develop stability; increase functional strength; and translate strength into power.
Before anything else, a golfer should focus on establishing proper posture and fl ex-
ibility in order to make a more effi cient swing and reduce the likelihood of injuries. Key
areas of focus for the golfer are the shoulder joints, hips, back and neck. Many golfers suf-
fer from muscle imbalances (short tight muscles and/or long weak muscles) that affect
their ability to maintain proper posture whether at rest or executing the swing. A C.H.E.K.
professional, TPI golf fi tness professional or your local chiropractor can assess these issues
and put you on track with appropriate corrective stretches and exercises. Now you are
ready for stability training.
Stability training focuses on
the golfer’s ability to maintain
their centre of gravity at all times.
If a golfer does not have ad-
equate stability they will fi nd it
diffi cult to develop consistency
in their swing. Over time, a lack
of postural and dynamic stabil-
ity will lead to injury. Stability ball
training, yoga and pilates are all
great ways to restore stability to
the working joints and musculo-
skeletal system.

(NC)-In celebration of its 50th anniversary in
Canada, Children’s Tylenol offers parents these
Fast Fever Facts about your child’s fever.
A fever is a symptom. The important question
is “what’s causing the fever.” For many children,
fevers are just a fact of life. Fevers are normal re-
sponses as a child’s body strives to “fi ght off” an
infection. However, if the fever does not go away
after three days, consult with your child’s physi-
cian.
Normal body temperature can vary. It ranges
between 36 to 37.5°C (97 to 99°F) and can vary
depending on the time of day and type of ther-
mometer used. A child’s temperature is consid-
ered a fever if it is higher than 38°C (100.4°F).
The fi rst consideration for parents is to get the fe-
ver down. The number one doctor recommended
medication to treat children’s fevers is Children’s
Tylenol.
Generally,
parents will
want to dress
their children
in light layers
of clothing
to allow the
extra heat to
escape. How-
ever, fever of-
ten brings on
the shivers and
putting on a
few layers will
help warm the
child up. Shiv-

es more body

ture to rise

After a golfer has developed stability they are
ready to increase their strength. The biggest mis-
take a golfer makes is following an exercise pro-
gram that looks like it was designed for a body-
builder. Choose exercises that are functional in
nature and resemble the general movement pat-
terns associated with the golf swing. In general,
focus on exercises that involve using free-weights
and cable machines as these have a better func-
tional carry-over to the game.
And fi nally...you are now ready to translate that
functional strength into power. When focusing on
power development the exercise should be spe-
cifi c to the movement patterns of golf with an
emphasis on speed development. Medicine ball
training and cable exercises are great ways to
develop power.
Considering each conditioning phase is typi-
cally three to four weeks in duration you can see
that golf season really is right around the corner.
So you better get started.

HEART &
STROKE
FOUNDATION LET’S BE HEART SMART
FEBRUARY IS HEART & STROKE MONTH
(NC)-For most of us, the best part of Valentine’s Day is fi nding that perfect gift. For the rest of us,
shopping can be very stressful. Often the key to fi nding the right gift is taking a few moments to
plan ahead and deciding, in which category does the gift-receiver belong?
For the ones who need some pampering: Most of us know at least one person who is over-
worked, under appreciated, and in desperate need of some rest and relaxation. Why not set the
atmosphere to give them the pampering they deserve? Try some scented candles with a relax-
ing aroma like lavender along with the corresponding essential oil to enhance the experience.
Include some spa inspired services, like a luxurious hair treatment that will pamper the hair.
Finally, ensure there are no distractions. Take the kids out to a movie or unplug the phones;
do whatever is necessary.
For the night owls: The tireless partiers in our life can never get enough of a good thing,
can they? So why not indulge them? Pick up a CD
by the latest band (ask the person at the counter
for some help with this one if you’re not sure where
to start). Pair it with a funky hair styling product
like OSiS Marshmellow moulding paste, a stainless
steel water bottle to keep them hydrated the day after
and fi nally, fi nish the gift off with a fl uffy pair of spa socks.
Their feet must be aching after a wild night out.
For the romantic: Romance requires a few calculated
steps, but is well worth the journey. Take some time to
plan a romantic evening. Throughout the night, shower
him or her with a few small gifts. Start off with a bouquet
of exotic fl owers or a bottle of good wine. Later surprise
them with their favourite sweets - you can’t go wrong
with a decadent box of Belgian chocolates. As the eve-
ning winds down, and he or she thinks there are no

(NC)-If you want the Valentine’s Day card you send to be
even more meaningful, add your own touches. “A great card
refl ects the personality of the sender,” says Jennifer Kinnon
of Hallmark Canada. “Before you seal the envelope, cover
your name and ask yourself if it could be from anyone. If so,
it needs a personal touch.”
Here’s what Kinnon suggests:
• Quote a line or two from “your song”.
• Add a note that expresses how you really feel. Tell them
what they bring to your life or that you’ll be thinking of
them all day.
• Add a light touch of perfume or cologne.
• Include a poem or an excerpt from a favourite book.
• Enclose a photo that captures a cherished moment.
• Provide a clue to where a gift is hidden.
“This is your chance to release your inner cupid,” concludes Kinnon. “Make the most
of it.”

Is a room in your house a mess? If so, we have the perfect contest for you
Professional home organizer
can help set things right
Enter by Feb. 18
DURHAM — If one of your New Year’s
resolutions is to get organized, here’s a
contest for you.
Is one room in your house a mess? Are
you afraid to have people see it? Well, we
have someone who would like to see your
mess. Her name is Michelle Nichols and
she wants to get you organized.
The Metroland Durham Region Media
Group and professional home organizer
Michelle Nichols are teaming up for Let’s
Get Organized. We’re looking for you to
tell us why a certain room in your home
needs to be reorganized by a professional
organizer. Send us a 400-word story about
your messy room and include three pic-
tures.
From there six finalists will be chosen
from all the entries, with one winner de-
termined.
The winner will have only one room or-
ganized by Ms. Nichols and we’ll be there
to film the work.
The messiest room will then be featured
on mediamash.ca, our video website.
Ms. Nichols understands how people
can be overwhelmed by clutter.
“It’s not a space issue,” she said.
“It (happens) because things are not
frequently put away properly.”
If this is something you can relate to,
then enter the contest.
The winner will get a free makeover, but
everyone watching our video series will
get tips and suggestions to get themselves
organized -- so it’s a win-win.
We will be accepting entries the week of
Feb. 11-18. The deadline is Feb. 18 at 11:59
p.m.
You can e-mail your entries from Feb.
11-18 to interactive@durhamregion.com
with the title, Let’s Get Organized Con-
test.
Let’s Get Organized contest can be
reached at interactive@durhamregion.

Pickering hockey player ready
for European tour with Selects
Morgan Kelly
on blue line
for U.S.-based team
headed for Iceland,
Sweden and Finland
By Al Rivett
arivett@durhamregion.com
PICKERING — It’s February and
the heart of the hockey season, but
Pickering’s Morgan Kelly can’t wait
for spring to arrive.
In April, the talented defenceman
with the Markham-Stouffville Stars
peewee ‘AA’ girls’ hockey team em-
barks on a once-in-a-lifetime op-
portunity to play against high-level
competition in another part of the
world.
Morgan and her teammates from
the 95 East Coast Selects girls’ hockey
team — a hand-picked squad of elite
12-year-old players from the eastern
U.S. and Canada — will travel to
Europe for a 11-day playing tour of
Sweden, Finland and Iceland.
The Grade 7 student at E.B. Phin
Public School earned her way onto
the Selects after, at the urging of her
Markham-Stouffville coach, attend-
ing a single-day tryout in Rochester,
New York last December. There, she
was one of 73 hopefuls attempting to
earn one of 17 spots on the team.
Those at the East Coast Selects try-
outs, recalls Morgan’s father, Peter,
were divided into four teams where
each squad played three 40-minute
games during the intensive day at
Rochester’s ESL Center. They were
evaluated from the upper reaches
of the arena by the coaching staff,
including head coach Kristi Alcorn.
Morgan notes the scrimmages
were tough, although she says nerves
weren’t a problem.
“It was a good level of hockey,” she
says. “It wasn’t easy. You really have
to work hard.”
Following the tryout, Morgan and
the other hopefuls waited anxiously
for another 24 hours before the Se-
lects’ roster was revealed online.
When her name popped up on
the player list, Morgan knew all the
effort had paid off.
“I was really excited,” she recalls. “I
knew I had worked hard and I knew I
deserved it.”
The team makeup includes three
players from New York state, six from
the GTA, and eight from London,
Belleville, Kanata, Rideau-St. Law-
rence and Barrie.
Beginning on April 18, the Select
team flies from New York City to
Reykjavik, Iceland for the showcase
event — the Icelander Cup tourna-
ment. The tour also includes exhibi-
tion games in Stockholm, Sweden
and Helsinki, Finland before the
flight home on April 28.
Alcorn says the tour pits the East
Coast Selects girls against elite boys’
‘AA’ teams in those countries. That’s
because girls’ hockey there isn’t
nearly as advanced as it is in Canada
and the U.S.
“Playing against boys would give
us the best competition,” notes Al-
corn, who’s also a lacrosse coach
at The Hill Academy in Kleinburg,
north of Toronto. “These are the top
female players from the East Coast
of Canada and the U.S. I think these
girls will go stride for stride with the
boys. At this age, they’re the same
size as the boys, so we’re going to
give them a run for their money.”
Alcorn notes Morgan was a shoo-
in for the Selects, based on her con-
siderable skills and hockey IQ.
“She was one of the top players out
there. She’s got a real good presence
on the ice. She’s a good passer and
a real heads-up player. She wasn’t
a bubble player. We put her right on
that list for the team.”
The 95 East Coast Selects girls’
hockey team is the first foray into
female hockey for the organization,
which is operated by the Howe De-
velopment Group, under the stew-
ardship of Gordie Howe’s grandson,
Travis. Boys’ teams have solely been
part of the organization until this
year. An under-14 girls’ program is
reportedly in the works.
Following the April European
tour, Morgan plans to finish the sea-
son with Markham-Stouffville before
joining the Selects for a tournament
in Rosemere, Quebec in May. Later
that month, she’ll join the Selects in
Rochester for the North American
Prospects Showcase and the Ontario
Summer Chill event in Toronto in
June. In July, she’ll attend an under-
12 elite camp at Quinnipiac College
in Hamden, Connecticut.
Each player on the Selects is cur-
rently collecting sponsorships, either
individuals or businesses, to offset
the tour’s cost. If you can help, con-
tact Ingrid Kelly at 416-302-9394.

Defending champs put
the hammer down on
Ajax’s Bob Turcotte
in round-robin action
DURHAM — The reigning world
champion Glenn Howard rink con-
tinues to rock the house at the TSC
Tankard 2008 Ontario Men’s Curl-
ing Championship in Waterloo.
The Howard team, which in-
cludes Pickering’s Richard Hart at
the vice position, sits at 8-0 and in
first place, as of Thursday night.
In games on Thursday, the
Howard foursome blasted Ajax
skip Bob Turcotte’s Oshawa Curl-
ing Club team 9-1, with Turcotte
shaking hands with Howard to end
the match after four ends. Howard
counted three in each of the first
three ends to put the game out of
reach.
In Howard’s other game on
Thursday, however, it took a full
10 ends to secure a 8-6 victory
over Wayne Middaugh from the St.
George’s Golf & Country Club.
The victory over Middaugh made
it 19 consecutive victories for How-
ard in provincial play.
The Howard foursome played the
Rob Lobel rink from the Brampton
Curling Club in Draw 10 on Fri-
day afternoon and the Mike Harris
rink from Toronto’s Tam Heather
Curling Club in Draw 11 on Friday
night, with the results unavailable
at press time.
The Howard team’s final game
of round-robin play against Harris
brought together old Olympic team-
mates. Hart, of the Howard team,
and skip Mike Harris and team-
mate Collin Mitchell, of Pickering,
won a silver medal together in curl-
ing at the 1998 Olympic Winter
Games in Nagano, Japan.
While Harris is very much alive
in the hunt for a top-four spot with
a 6-2 record as of Thursday, the
Turcotte rink has fallen out of the
playoff picture with a mark of 3-5
as of Thursday.
The Page playoff (1 vs. 2, 3 vs.
4), followed by semifinal play were
contested on Saturday.
The final is at 2 p.m. today (Sun-
day).

A Burlington junior women’s
rink — which includes two An-
nandale curlers — is competing at
the M & M Meat Shops Canadian
Juniors Championship in Sault Ste.
Marie.
Curling with Burlington skip
Danielle Inglis are Annandale’s
Chantal Lalonde at vice and Tracy
O’Leary at second, along with Pam
Feldkamp of Burlington at lead.
As of Friday morning, the Iglis
team was 5-6 at the nationals. On
Friday morning in Draw 16, the
Inglis foursome bested B.C.’s Kelly
Thompson rink 7-4. Thursday
night, the Ontario foursome lost
7-6 to Alberta’s Maria Bushell rink
in Draw 15.
Tie-breakers and semifinal
games were played Saturday, with
the women’s final today (Sunday).
•••
The rocks just weren’t aligning
right for Annandale Golf and Curl-
ing Club teams competing at the
Best Western Intermediate Zone
Playdowns in Unionville last week-
end.
Annandale had a team in each
of the men’s and women’s events
at zones. Unfortunately, neither
the Susannah Moylan rink nor the
Gord Norton foursome was able to
advance to the regionals.
Twelve teams were entered in
the Zone 6 men’s event while seven
teams competed in the women’s
Zone 6 playdown.
Skip Moylan and her team of
Bonnie Klepadlo, Shannon Silva
and Heather MacDonald was side-
lined after two consecutive losses
at the zones.
Meanwhile, skip Norton and
teammates Warren Leslie, Alex Bi-
anchi and Mike Trudeau were also
sidelined, but with a 1-2 record.
The regionals are at the Thorn-
hill Golf Club on March 1 and 2.
•••
Annandale hosts the annual
A.L.I.C.E (Annandale Ladies Invi-
tational Cash Extravaganza) bon-
spiel this weekend. Sixty-four play-
ers making 16 teams are expected,
with each playing three six-end
games.
Last year, Annandale teams took
the first three prizes.
Convener Lisa Puddephatt is
heading up the annual event that
always includes food between
games and plenty of fun for the
curlers.

BEST, Florence Hazel-February 6 2008,
after a brief illness, in her 91st year. A
resident of Sunrise Assisted Living in
Oakville since 2003, Hazel had a great
lust for life despite a number of medical
challenges in her later years. Hazel was
born in Oshawa Ontario, March 25, 1917.
After a short career as a surgical nurse in
Oshawa, she married Douglas W. S. Best
MD, her best friend and life-long
companion. She and Douglas celebrated
their 64th wedding anniversary in 2007.
An energetic and tireless volunteer and
organizer, Hazel rose through the ranks
of the Girl Guides of Canada, advancing
to the position of District Commissioner.
She was an active member at Trinity
United Church and Wellington Square
United Church in Burlington, St. Mark's
United Church in Whitby, and the Whitby
Curling Club, where she was awarded an
honorary life-time membership for her
many years of outstanding service. Hazel
is survived by her brother Ray Trew and
sisters Marion Carter and Dorita Shaw;
her husband Douglas; her three children
David Best (Margaret), Marion Winton
(Ian) and Richard Best (Penny Smith);
and five grandchildren: Christine Best,
Danielle Best, Stephen Sparrow, Diane
Sparrow, and Lindsey Best. The family
asks that donations be made to the Heart
& Stroke Foundation in lieu of flowers.
