Charlotte Deveaux burst into the world at 10:03 a.m. on Jan. 1, weighing in at seven pounds, nine ounces, and was the first baby born at Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering in 2008. And she didn’t make a peep as her mother, father, grandmoth- er, grandfather, visitors and two older sisters, Erika and Yvette, celebrated the new addition to the Whitby family at the hospital the next day. Her mother, Danielle Deveaux, whose due date was Jan. 12, had scheduled the caesarean section for the first day of 2008, but didn’t think she’d be the first to deliver since she only went in for the procedure at 9:45 a.m. “I didn’t think I’d have the first baby of the year,” she said. “It’s kind of neat just being the first. It was a great surprise actually.” But Charlotte wasn’t the first born in Durham; Ava Banlaki was born at 1:19 a.m. on New Year’s Day at Lakeridge Health Oshawa. Charlotte’s father, Bernie De- veaux, said he’s very grateful for the service at the hospital. In fact, he said Dr. Janice Ruggles has delivered all three of the couples’ baby girls. “She even cut into her holidays to stay and deliver,” Ms. Deveaux added. And although Charlotte’s sister, two-year-old Erika, was expect- ing a boy, she confided to the News Advertiser that she is ex- cited about her new baby sister. Ms. Deveaux said she was sur- prised to have a third girl, but she and her husband are just happy to have three healthy, gorgeous girls. “It’s going to be busy; three under three-and-a-half,” Mr. De- veaux said. “But it’s a savings really. We can just pass the clothes on.” He added he knows that may not be the case once all three are teen- agers together. As for future New Year’s Days, the family will always have a rea- son to celebrate. “It’ll be a party from now on, that’s for sure,” Ms. Deveaux said. The residents, along with a crew from the Ajax Fire and Emergency Services, were on the Harwood Avenue bridge Wednesday to hon- our Jonathan Dion, a member of the Canadian Forces killed in Af- ghanistan on Sunday. Paul McGovern, 19 and a mem- ber of the Strathconas based in Edmonton, was at the ceremony to pay “respect.” The Ajax resident has been in the Canadian Forces for 18 months and has not yet been deployed. Asked if he looks forward to being deployed, Mr. McGovern says “Yes. It’s why I joined in the first place.” Jeremy Burns, a Whitby resident and a cadet with the Canadian Forces, says he was there to “show my support.” It’s the first time he’s partici- pated in a bridge ceremony. “Showing support is very im- portant,” Mr. Burns says. “To see the people supporting the troops really makes it all worthwhile.” Gunner Dion, with 5e regiment d’artillerie legere du Canada, based in Valcartier, Que., was the 74th Canadian soldier to die in Af- ghanistan since the mission began in 2002. Bob Jeffery says he was at the ceremony “mostly, it’s just respect. It’s the least we can do to show our support for the families.” Joe Hovorka of Ajax says he’s attended all similar ceremonies in 2007 and has missed only two since they began. Holding a Ca- nadian flag, Mr. Hovorka says it’s “important for the soldiers putting their lives in danger.” The families “need to know the death of the soldiers mattered.” Knowing how people feel about the soldiers, Mr. Hovorka says will “last a lifetime for the fam- ilies. It will last a lifetime for you because you don’t forget. It hits you in the gut.” He says there’s “a lot at stake” in the Afghanistan conflict. “The only reason we enjoy the things we enjoy are the veterans of a generation ago,” he notes. Mitchell Vangennip, 13, and his sister Sarah, nine, were on hand with their mother Donna and grandfather Andre. Mitchell says they were there to “pay our respects for the people who are fighting for us.” Sarah says the “people in Af- ghanistan fought for us and died for us.” Dr. Alan Fernandes & Dr. Robert Pacione 2200 Brock Road in the Brock North Plaza WISDOM TEETH EXTRACTIONS AVAILABLE ON SATURDAYS WITH ORAL SURGEON OPEN EVENINGS & SATURDAYS CONTACT US AT 905-427-7773 • DIGITAL X-RAY • INTRA ORAL CAMERA • TV IN OPERATORIES • KIDS PLAY STATION 2 • DIRECT BILLING TO INSURANCE Back left to right: Kathy, Christine, Robbin, Darlene, Marie, Dr. Mike Tzotzis-Orthodontist. The Ward 4 local Councillor was hospitalized in Toronto a week be- fore Christmas after a brain tumour was found. It was successfully re- moved and she was transferred to the Rouge Valley Ajax and Pickering hospital on Wednesday. In an e-mail, Coun. Brown says the well-wishes she and her family have received are welcome. “I can’t thank you enough for all your thoughts and prayers for my recovery. They have paid off and I’m on my way back,” she states. “I have been overwhelmed with beautiful bouquets of flowers and although they have been very much appreciated, I would like to suggest that in lieu of flowers, donations could be sent to either St. Michael’s Hospital or the Ajax and Pickering hospital to support neurological or rehabilitation treatments for the benefit of others.” Ward 4 residents who have any concerns or questions can contact Cherry Sevigny, the may- or’s assistant, at 905-619-2529, ext. 335, or by e-mail at cherry. sevigny@townofajax.com. Council has waived the rental fees for the portion of the games taking place in Pickering. From May 29 to 31, the Special Olympics Ontario Durham Region 2008 Spring Games, hosted by the Durham Regional Police Ser- vice (DRPS), will be held at various facilities throughout Durham. Special Olympics Ontario and DRPS identified the Pickering Recreation Complex as a premier facility for the swimming portion of the games. The swimming events will take place on May 30 and 31, and about 250 athletes will be par- ticipating. The organization will save $1,872, including taxes, rental fees and extra fees, due to council’s decision. About 1,000 athletes will participate in events such as swimming, basketball, weightlifting and bowling throughout the games. The Revolution Starts At Home’ follows the McDonald family as it sees how much it really consumes by saving garbage and recycling for three months (the organic waste is weighed each week before it’s collected by the municipality). Toronto filmmaker Andrew Nisker takes the family to see where the items go and what effect they have on the world once they leave their home. The film also includes energy consump- tion, pollution from cleaning products, and the environmental effects from travel. Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dick- erson, chairman of the Sustainable Pickering Advisory Committee, said the film made him more aware of the effects of the choices he makes each day when it comes to consumption. The screening is Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Pickering Civic Com- plex Council Chambers (One The Es- planade). Admission is free, but dona- tions will be accepted at the door to cover the cost of the screening. Seating is limited, so those who wish to attend must RSVP by Friday, Jan. 11 to info@sustain-ability.ca or call 905- 427-0061. NE011H208 © 2008. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com LETTER TO THE EDITOR GM faces ongoing challenges in 2008 It’s nothing new for the local auto industry which has been bleeding jobs for a number of years now, but 2008 promises to be a pivotal year for General Motors of Canada. The long-awaited flex plant, which can produce several models at once, is scheduled to open later this year with its No. 1 product the revamped, restyled Chevrolet Camaro. While that’s good news and it’s hoped the Camaro will be a worldwide hit, there are other storm clouds on the horizon for General Motors. And what’s bad for GM has a ripple effect that impacts the entire Durham economy where a number of branch plants produce parts for GM. It also hurts all businesses that depend on GM workers for their bottom line. Indications from Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty are that the Conservative government will not take an activist role in propping up suffering businesses. In a widely reported year-end interview, Mr. Flaherty, also MP for Whitby-Oshawa, suggested the government would take a wait-and-see approach on the economy and let the market dictate what moves it would make. The problem for manufacturing is that it is just one facet of what has been a hot economy. Unemployment is low, our dollar is valuable on the world stage, and growth is achieving rates the feds can be pleased with. However, there is a major concern that a slumping U.S. econ- omy, where 85 per cent of GM Canada’s production is exported to, could eventually lead to a production lag here. That would be bad news for all of us. It’s not clear what exactly the feds could do to cushion the blow of reduced demand for autos from the U.S. other than to reduce corporate taxes and to provide subsidies to manufactur- ers to help them ride any downturn. A long-time concern has been any free trade deal with Korea which offers auto manufacturers in the Asian nation an advan- tage when they export vehicles here but which fails to provide the same treatment to Canadian manufacturers seeking to break into the growing Korean market. Free trade must be fair. General Motors must quickly react to market activity -- the flex plant is a very good start -- but a little help from the feds in the upcoming budget, wouldn’t hurt either. You can’t beat an outdoor rink I t looks like we’ve finally got a real winter on our hands. I couldn’t be happier. This morning my one-block walk to the newspaper box felt like summitting on K2. Fantastic. You know you’re Canadian when you’ve got to chisel the frozen snot out of your moustache before breakfast. That’s living. With the advent of the cold and snow there’s hope too for a fresh crop of that uniquely Canadian phenomenon; the out- door rink. With the weirdness of the weather lately, outdoor rinks have become an endangered species. I had my own rink on life support several times last season. There was a time, when I was a kid, when virtually every park you came across had an outdoor rink, paid for by the municipality’s recreation budget and maintained by some good-hearted, community-minded souls. But, like twice a day mail delivery and anvils in cartoons, they went the way of the Dodo. One by one they disappeared until eventually, parks in most neighborhoods became childless, silent wastelands from November to April. And soon, a whole gen- eration of unfortunate children grew up not knowing what it’s like to skate or whack a puck around without a roof overhead and Zamboni exhaust in their lungs. That’s just wrong. Being a kid without ever once lacing up in the cold or gliding around while the sun dips into a breathtaking vermilion sunset is like growing up without milk and cookies. It’s like a childhood spent without ever once finding a discarded Playboy magazine. With the advent of so many high-tech, indoor diversions our lives are badly out of balance. Most of us, and our children, are sorely in need of a connection to nature. We just don’t go out much. When was the last time you stood and looked up into a winter’s night sky? When was the last time you walked in a forest so silenced by fallen snow you could hear a squirrel fart? An outdoor rink happily puts us back into nature’s good hands. Our bodies, as we glide and swoop and twirl through the bril- liance of a winter’s day or under the glory of a million blazing stars, rejoice at a cellular level. Outdoor rinks are like frozen foun- tains of youth. To skate on one is to slip back into time. It is to reconnect with that energy that once glowed and pulsed through us. A few years ago, my comedy partner and I did a show at a resort near Huntsville. The show wrapped up around 10:30 at night and afterwards we were wound up and ener- gized. Neither of us felt remotely like heading for sleep or watching television. We discov- ered that the resort had a large outdoor rink on one of its frozen ponds, complete with lights, nets and rentable skates and sticks. The two of us laced up and spent several blissful hours skating, passing a puck back and forth and just talking. Talking, laughing and making memories while the snow, the forest and the million stars in the heav- ens listened and smiled. You can’t get that through a wall socket. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor- comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. He is currently starring in the hit CBC sitcom, Little Mosque on the Prairie. Follow Neil’s BLOG drinfo.ca/croneblog.html LCBO on the right track To the editor: The residents of Durham Region have been forced to com- post, and to do so properly they need to purchase the com- postable liners bags. The Region has provided us with recycling bins for our kitchen scraps, however we need to purchase the liners, which are costly. Grocery stores however, have not eliminated the use of plas- tic bags; they cannot be broken down during the composting stage. The fight should be to eliminate the plastic bag and en- courage people to use the paper bag to line the bins. We must all work together to help save the environment. People use the plastic bags for garbage collection to avoid purchasing specific bags. Most people still use these bags pro- vided by the grocery stores for that purpose. In order to properly implement the use of the green bins, which will eventually be advantageous to the environment, stores must be partners in the fight to save the environment. Why are grocery stores allowed to opt out of this fight? If we as citizens are mandated to compost, why are the stores continu- ing to provide environmentally unfriendly bags? The LCBO is the only store that offers the consumer the choice of paper or plastic. The LCBO is the model in the fight to save the environment. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, January 4, 2008 PAGE 7 A/Pdurhamregion.com DURHAM — Another 24 people have been busted for drunk driving as Dur- ham police continue with the annual Festive RIDE campaign, bringing the number so far to more than 100 and surpassing last year’s total with one week left to go. In the first six weeks of the sched- uled seven-week campaign 105 people have been charged with drinking and driving, cops said Wednesday. That’s more than the 101 charged in last year’s RIDE effort. A total of 1,860 vehicles were checked during the sixth week, with 181 road- side breath tests administered. In ad- dition to those charged another 29 mo- torists had their licences suspended for 12 hours for registering a warning. As well, eight young G1 and G2 licence holders were charged for breaching the no-alcohol condition. RIDE wraps up this week. The current tentative strike date is Jan. 7. There would be no GO bus service in the event of a strike, but trains would run as scheduled. Durham Region Transit operates sev- eral routes parallel to GO service in the region. - 915 Taunton offers frequent service, in- cluding weekends, from the Pickering GO station via Bayly and Westney to Taunton and Simcoe to Durham College and UOIT. - 916 Rossland offers frequent and direct service to and from the Pickering and Ajax GO stations to Durham College and UOIT. - 922 Bloor/Victoria offers rush hour ser- vice to and from the Whitby GO station, connecting with the Oshawa GO station and Courtice. - 6 White Oaks offers service from Jeffrey and McQuay in Whitby via Kendalwood and Burns to the Oshawa Centre. - 2 King offers service from Oshawa Centre to Courtice Road. DRT said passengers should anticipate delays due to general heavier traffic con- gestion and possible disruptions at GO stations. There will be alternative bus stop locations next to the GO stations should there be picketing at GO station entrances. The co-fare agree- ment allowing GO train riders to transfer to DRT buses at a reduced rate will stay intact. The “one fare anywhere” agreement which allows DRT passengers to travel on GO buses within the region will be sus- pended. For route information and schedules, visit www.durhamregiontransit.com. DUFFIN HEIGHTS NEIGHBOURHOOD ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICING PLAN (ESP) CITY OF PICKERING Class Environmental Assessment and Ontario Realty Corporation (ORC) Category ‘B’ Class Environmental Assessment NOTICE OF STUDY COMPLETION DECEMBER 21st, 2007 Duffi n Heights is an Urban Neighbourhood identifi ed in the City of Pickering Offi cial Plan. Policies within the City of Pickering Offi cial Plan require an Environmental Servicing Plan (ESP) prior to development occurring in the Duffi n Heights Neighbourhood. Sernas Associates, on behalf of Mattamy Homes Limited, Coughlan Homes, and the Ontario Realty Corporation have conducted the Duffi n Heights Environmental Servicing Plan (ESP). The ESP addresses the following components needed for development to occur: • Proposed road needs; • Proposed road alignments; • Natural Heritage System (NHS) crossings; • Community Facility needs; and • Development Limits. The above plan depicts the preferred road locations and preferred land use and recommended development limits for the Duffi n Heights Neighbourhood. In consultation with agencies and the public the recommendations of the ESP required the following Community Facilities to support the development of the Neighbourhood – 2 elementary schools, 4 Village Greens, 1 Neighbourhood Park and 4 stormwater management ponds. Class Environmental Assessment (EA) Components of the ESP requiring future approvals under the Environmental Assessment Act have been completed in accordance with Phases 1 and 2 of Schedule ‘C’ of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment, June 2000, for Municipal Roads Projects. Alternative roads and road alignments, Community Facility needs and Development limits have been evaluated based on the following: • Engineering and Public Safety • Natural Environment • Social/Cultural Environment • Economic Environment The ESP has been prepared to document the study activities, conclusions and recommendations. The ESP is available for public review at the City of Pickering Planning and Development Department from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. For further information about the ESP please contact Lynn Collins at the telephone number and address listed below or by e-mail. We welcome you to review the ESP and provide us your comments by January 21, 2008. Subject to comments received by this date the City of Pickering may proceed with the necessary Offi cial Plan Amendments and Tertiary Plan changes in order to implement the preferred transportation network and land use plan. ORC Category ‘B’ Class Environmental Assessment (EA) ORC has landholdings within the Duffi n Heights Neighbourhood. These landholdings may be transferred or sold as development occurs within the Neighbourhood. ORC is required to carry out a Category ‘B’ Environmental Assessment prior to the sale or transfer of their lands. The Municipal Class EA is intended to address the requirements of Category ‘B’ of the Environmental Assessment for ORC for the disposition of their lands within the Duffi n Heights Neighbourhood. This ORC undertaking is limited to lands for which no previous ORC EA has already been conducted. Comments or Questions? Mr. Gos and Bob Murray have been organizing the swim for several years and this year used it as a fundraiser for the Durham Regional Cancer Centre and for Michael Box, the 15-year-old Oshawa youth who suffered a broken neck and severed spinal cord during a wrestling match in Ajax recently. All told, $2,344.83 was raised for the Box family and $415.12 for the cancer centre. Mr. Gos says the event was “abso- lutely wonderful. We had 400 people out there. One hundred went in the water, in two shifts. “For the amount of people out there, they really gave generously,” he adds. “It was really cold. “It got bigger than last year. We had three times the amount of people. Next year will be even bigger,” Mr. Gos notes. Among the swimmers was Michael’s father, Scott. “It went really well. I was really happy for the turnout for Michael and the cancer centre. It was very cold, especially after three times in,” Mr. Box says. “They were hoping to raise $1,000 and they tripled that.” Mr. Box took the plunge three times. Once, when everybody went in, a sec- ond time when a lady showed up late, and a third time when a TV station also showed up late. Mr. Gos says some of the “brave souls” included a 10-year-old boy who went in for the first time. Another pair was a father and daughter who went in for their mother, who has cancer. “That was good to see. “A lot went in for the first time and repeats we had from last year,” he states, adding one person who went in was a woman who was “challenged by her kids to do something weird. “Bob and I are pleased,” Mr. Gos says. “It turned out very well.” Next year, the organizers are consid- ering having tents set up so people can change after the dip. As for Michael, Mr. Box says it’s “day- by-day. He’s progressing a bit. He’s still in the C.C. (critical care) unit. “He was quite happy to watch all the video on the news. Seeing people get- ting cold, he was happy with that,” he states. A trust fund has been set up at the Bank of Montreal to help Michael. The account number is 39412-001- 8116279. A wheelchair for Michael will cost about $15,000. Panthers renew playoff chase Pickering juniors ‘not dead’ in bid for post-season berth: Coach Mark Joslin By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — If there’s faint hope of a playoff berth for the Pickering Panthers, that hope re- sides in how well the team does this weekend. More specifically, it will come down to how the Panthers handle a fellow bottom-of-the-pack team like the Durham Fury, which they face tonight (Friday) at the Pickering Recreation Complex at 7:30 p.m. Panthers’ head coach Mark Jos- lin notes it’s imperative to get a win tonight as well as to take two against the North York Rangers (a postponed game to make up; another in North York on Feb. 6) -- who the Panthers are chasing in the stand- ings -- to have an chance to chal- lenge for a playoff spot. “We still have a shot at it; we’re not dead by any means,” says Jos- lin. “Friday night’s game against Durham is a huge game; it’s one we’ve got to win.” Currently sitting in the bottom of the OHA Ontario Provincial Ju- nior ‘A’ Hockey League’s South Conference standings, the Pan- thers (9-24-1 for 19 points) are nine points behind the North York Rangers for the sixth and final playoff spot in the conference. Joslin acknowledges wins may be hard to come by the rest of the way as every team is rally- ing to gain a post-season berth. Moreover, team management has already started the task of po- sitioning the team for next sea- son by jettisoning several veteran players prior to the Jan. 10 trade deadline. Trades consummated by the Panthers just prior to or during the Christmas break: • Top scorer and second-year forward Jamie MacQueen to the Vaughan Vipers for defenceman Nick LeBouthiller and future con- siderations. In his first game with the Vipers, MacQueen netted a hat trick in a 7-2 win over the Dixie Beehives on Dec. 22; • Kevin Hudes, the Panthers’ fourth lead- ing scorer, was dealt to the Markham Waxers for future con- siderations and cash; • Ryan Gold- berg, a veter- an defence- man, was dealt to the Stouffville Spirit in a cash deal; • Defenceman Thomas Long- land was released in order to join his brother Curtis with the Port Colborne Sailors of the Golden Horseshoe Junior ‘B’ league; While Joslin isn’t thrilled about the Panthers unloading veterans, he’s solidly behind management’s decision to fill the roster with players who want to be Panthers for the long haul. “Obviously, management has the last say on decisions like that. I want guys who are willing to buy in and work hard and learn what it takes to play at a higher level. I want to compete and get guys who want to be here.” In addition to playing Durham, the Panthers are also in Vaughan to play the Vipers on Saturday night. In addition to MacQueen, the Vipers also have former standout forward Brad Fleishman, who was dealt early in the season for forward Richard Duncan. The task of vying for weekend wins, says Joslin, will be made tougher with the absence of sev- eral players, chief among them standout rookie forward Andy An- dreoff, who’s expected to be join- ing the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League for week- end games. As well, forward Tyler Hauer is ill and not expected to play, forward Chris Clark is currently on a try- out with a semi-pro team, and forward Chad Beal is under suspension and, unless an appeal is successful, will not be available. Although the Panthers are clearly sellers at the trade dead- line, Joslin notes the club has one card in which to sign a player. “We’ll use it for a defenceman,” he says. Following this weekend, the Panthers have 13 games remain- ing in the regular-season sched- ule. That’s part of the reason why Nicki Irwin of Satya Yoga Shala is holding a charity open house, offering 30-minute mini-classes throughout the afternoon on Sunday, Jan. 6. She encourages residents to stop by and try out a class, or even to simply observe. She’s asking participants to bring one non-perishable food item for each mini- class they plan to attend, which will be donated to local community food banks. “As we move into the new year, it is im- portant that we don’t lose sight of those in need within our community, and remem- ber to support those less fortunate even after the gift-giving season has passed,” she wrote in a letter to the News Adver- tiser. The open house will run from noon to 4 p.m. at Satya Yoga Shala, located at 713 Krosno Blvd. (right off of Liverpool Rd.) in Pickering. For more information call Ms. Irwin at 416-418-7436 or visit the website’s stu- dio news page for a schedule at www. yogashape4life.com. DURHAM — Women may have more willpower, but the sexes are equal when it comes to actually achieving their New Year’s resolutions. While almost all Canadians make New Year’s resolutions (96 per cent), how many actually go through with them all year? According to a BMO Financial Group study conducted by Angus Reid Strategies, only 19 per cent of either sex generally achieve their resolutions. Even though 71 per cent of Canadians believe that women are stronger than men when it comes to willpower and determina- tion, the study found that both sexes have equally low success rates. A chance for good karma Keeping your New Year’s resolutions What is your New Year’s resolution? -- Top New Year’s resolution choice with 31 per cent of Canadians trying to lose weight. -- About 26 per cent of Canadians want to exercise more often. -- Tied at 26 per cent was saving more money this year. -- Only 19 per cent said they follow through with resolutions. -- Just 13 per cent of Canadians do not achieve success. -- An optimistic 53 per cent say they’re sometimes successful. $$$$$ JOHNNY JUNKER WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE.
