If a vehicle exceeds the 50-km/ h speed limit, the boards will light up, warning drivers to slow down and reminding them of the limit. “This is an area known for speed and, unfortunately, we’ve had a number of accidents,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. The guard rails along the south- bound lane on the stretch of road north of Finch are dented and bent from collisions over the years. The LED radar boards are part of the City’s speed reduction pilot project in the area. Mayor Ryan said there are two aspects to reducing speeds: en- forcement and education. The boards provide the latter. “What this board does is it doesn’t tell you how fast you’re going, it tells you you’re going too fast and that the speed limit is 50 kilometers per hour,” said Mayor Ryan. It doesn’t show the actual speed of the vehicle because the City doesn’t want drivers zipping past trying to clock themselves. Rick Johnson, Ward 3 regional councillor, said there’s been traf- fic calming in Pickering for about 10 years in places like Whitevale. “Now we’re seeing more of it in an urban area and on this stretch of road there’s a dangerous cor- ner,” he said. At $15,000 for the two signs, Coun. Johnson said the City scored a deal since they each cost $9,000. “It was a good buy for the City,” he said. They also run on solar-charged batteries and do not require elec- tricity. Coun. Johnson pointed out the streetlights along the road cost more to operate than the signs. The City is hoping to see a de- crease in the accident rate along the stretch of road, said the mayor. If it does, council will consider purchasing radar boards for other areas. And police will continue to keep an eye out for speeders. “There is enforcement. We don’t want people to think there’s no enforcement because the board is here,” said Mayor Ryan. Officers charged another 18 people with drunk driving in the fifth week of the effort, bringing this year’s total arrests to 85. By comparison neighbouring Toronto has seen 46 drunk driving busts, while York Re- gion police are reporting 21 so far this year. At least in part, the spiralling numbers in Durham Region may be attributable to a much more aggressive approach for the 2007 campaign. Detective Constable Dave Ashfield of Durham’s traffic unit has an eight-member RIDE team that is setting up traditional checkpoint lines throughout the region, but they’re also dispersing in the early morning hours, patrolling back and side streets in search of drivers who may be attempting to evade RIDE stops. “We’re catching an awful lot of people going through the back roads ... they’re ob- viously trying to avoid us for some reason,” he said in a recent interview at a RIDE stop in Pickering. In the fifth week of RIDE in Durham offi- cers stopped 2,140 vehicles and demanded 156 roadside breath tests. In addition to those charged with drunk driving another 28 motorists had their licences suspended for 12 hours after registering a warning reading for blood alcohol levels. In one instance on Wednesday night of- ficers received word a man drinking at a south Oshawa bar was planning on driving home. Cops stopped the vehicle as it left the parking lot and busted him for driving while exceeding the legal limit and impaired care or control. The man’s residence was less than 350 metres from the front door of the bar at which he’d been drinking, Det.-Const. Ash- field said. RIDE continues until New Year’s Eve cel- ebrations next week. With shiny new toys to occupy every- one’s time, where exactly does all that junk end up? Despite the wintry conditions, cold weather and unpredictable forecasts, this is actually the busiest time of the year to clear out all that unwanted junk. “With relatives visiting throughout the holidays, people suddenly real- ize they need a spare room,” said Sue Woodward, franchise owner of 1-800- GOT-JUNK?. Every year, she finds a 25 per cent increase in the amount of waste resi- dents generate between Dec. 1 and New Year’s Day. Ms. Woodward and her husband Al pick up a lot more furniture and old ap- pliances during this period. “We take anything. We try to recycle and donate as much as possible,” said Ms. Woodward. Many people are renovating their homes and purchase updated appli- ances and furniture, but just because the style is older, it doesn’t mean it’s garbage. Unwanted items in good condition can be donated to charitable founda- tions such as the Salvation Army stores, Habitat for Humanity and Value Vil- lage. The top Christmas throwaways in- clude children’s toys and sporting equipment, clothing, books, decora- tions and electronics like televisions, cellphones and old computer monitors. Used clothing and toys can be do- nated to organizations like Goodwill, the Salvation Army or various toy drives. Old furniture and working appliances make great garage sale items. Old deco- rations can be sent to school for a child’s art class. With hazardous items such as computer monitors and batteries, residents often have no idea what to do with them, so Ms. Woodward suggests learning more about e-waste events. An e-waste event occurs when mu- nicipalities have one or two days where items that can’t be put into regular gar- bage can be properly disposed of. The Region of Durham also has a spe- cial service in which residents can drop off unwanted electronic equipment and encourages waste diversion from landfill disposal, however waste disposal fees are applied. All equipment received is completely shredded at an approved in- dustrial recycling site and materials are recovered for reuse. Acceptable items include radios, stereos, VCRs personal computers, attachments, telephones, fax machines, photocopiers, electronic cash registers and calculators. DURHAM — Police have issued an appeal for in- formation as they try to track down a man want- ed in connection with a cheque fraud scam. The man opened bank accounts in Pickering and Whitby using an alias -- Mario Aubertin -- and produc- ing phoney identifica- tion, including a driv- er’s licence and a health card. He then used those accounts to cash four false cheques, bilk- ing the banks out of more than $20,000, say Dur- ham cops. The suspect is a white man in his 40s with thinning grey hair. He spoke with a French accent and pro- duced documents that link him to Toronto and Montreal, police said. Anyone with information connect- ed to the investigation is asked to call 905-579- 1520, ext. 2528 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. DURHAM — A group of Dur- ham students with a knack for nature recently got a chance to meet Ontario’s Lieutenant Gov- ernor. The 2006 Tree Bee winners, from St. Bernadette in Ajax and St. Elizabeth Seton in Pickering, attended a reception hosted by Lt. Governor David Onley on Dec. 12. Tree Bee is a yearly competi- tion which tests students from Grades 4 to 6 on their knowledge of tree identification and conser- vation. The two schools tied for first place in the competition. Tianna Gomes and Jon-Paul Della Pia from St. Bernadette and Laura Pagniello, Daniel Mar- tanda and Nuwan Perera from St. Elizabeth Seton all received certificates from the Lieutenant Governor. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Please usher in 2008 safely Have a great time, but take care We know you’ve heard it a hundred times in the last few weeks, but we’re entreating you to have a safe New Year’s Eve. For most people, tomorrow night is one of the highlights of the year, an occasion to raise a glass or two or three with friends and family and have the party of parties. And, after a long year of hard work, stress etc., we’re entitled to un- wind and drink it up once in a while. But, drinking and driving, beyond being against the law, is simply stupid. It’s a potential life-ruiner or killer, and the life you ruin or take could be your own. Family and friends are generally good about knowing when someone’s had too much to drink and intervening when that person wants to drive off into the night. It’s your personal responsibility, however, to ensure you’re not a danger on the roads because you’re impaired. Besides, it’s a lousy position to put someone in, making them the judge and jury and, likely in your drunken eyes, the party pooper. Just as we spend a lot of time deciding what to do on New Year’s Eve if we have a few options, the time to decide how you’re going to get home, or if you’re going home at all, isn’t on the big night itself, and certainly not after finishing off a 26-ounce bottle of rye. No, working out what you’re going to do is best done when sober and before the party starts. That way, all the uncertainty is removed and you’re free to enjoy yourself. There are a number of options. Yes, taxis and hotel rooms are expensive. But, if you’re someone who doesn’t often use the former or stay in the latter, on this one night it’s worth splurging to be safe. If you’re attending a house party and your host is amenable to the idea, ask if you can stay the night. Make safety a priority tomorrow night. If you don’t have a plan, it could be a recipe for disaster. A couple of years ago, my son, now almost six, noticed someone smoking for the first time. I’m sure he’d seen people smoke but just hadn’t noticed. Almost no one we know smokes -- at least, not around the kids. It’s not something he would have had cause to consider before. But that day, there was a man smok- ing in the park, beside the playground and my boy did notice it. “Mommy,” he said, whispering ear- nestly, “Is that man a dragon?” It sounds so silly, but you know, as an ex-smoker who quit only when finding herself pregnant (with, inci- dentally, the same kid who made the comment), I was so pleased to know he didn’t consider smoking normal. It was normal for people to smoke when I grew up -- it almost seemed like it was the rule rather than the exception. I quit smoking when I was pregnant (never to start again, thank heavens -- mostly because I didn’t want to have to quit again. Not a day goes by that I don’t want a cigarette, to be honest) for obvious reasons. But, I remember thinking in those bleary-eyed days when I was first home with a newborn, “Am I ever glad I don’t smoke anymore... I don’t know when I’d have time... and besides, it’s winter, and man, I’d be cold out there having a smoke.” It never crossed my mind I could have smoked inside the house where a baby lived. Likewise, it would have never crossed my mind to hotbox a child in a car while I smoked. Honestly, knowing what we know now about the impact of second-hand smoke, especially on the tiny, develop- ing lungs of children, how could that be justified? Yet I see it all the time: parents driv- ing around, smoking in the front seat while their little one breathes in the result of their parent’s bad habit in the back. The parent has taken the time to strap that kid into a car seat -- after all, that is the law -- but continues to endanger their child by smoking in that tiny, often unventilated space. Some say passing a law that would prohibit parents from putting children in that very situation is an invasion of privacy, that it oversteps parents’ rights. I disagree. No more does it trounce parents’ rights than does forc- ing them to put a child in a car seat. Doing something we know could harm our children is negligent and the law ought to recognize it as such. Luckasavitch visited Good Shepherd Catholic school, he was de- termined to walk through the front doors. And, despite the fact that at least one doctor said he’d never walk again, J.J. did just that with the aid of a walker. The Grade 8 student has been out of the classroom since January, when he col- lapsed on the way home. What happened afterwards was, as his mom describes it, like an episode of the television show House. For months J.J. visited doctors and hospitals, in- cluding the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, as his condition grew progressive- ly worse. He was jaundiced and began to use a wheel- chair. “I was watching my son die and I couldn’t do noth- ing. They didn’t know what it was and it got worse and worse,” said J.J.’s mom, Kelly Luckasavitch. He was referred to a liver specialist, who failed to di- agnose J.J.’s condition. Finally in August, his family doctor was able to refer J.J. to a hematologist, someone who specializes in blood disorders, he knew personally. It didn’t take that doctor long to figure out the student is suffering from pernicious anemia, a condition where the body can’t absorb vitamin B12. Ms. Luckasavitch said the hematologist immediately suspected the culprit and started J.J. on B12 injections even before a simple blood test determined J.J.’s vita- min B12 levels were at zero, lower than the doctors had ever seen. Finally, J.J. began to re- cover. “I was eating like crazy, the hospital food sucked,” he said. But, left untreated, perni- cious anemia causes nerve damage and even death. J.J. now has multiple fractures and osteoporosis in his back. On Dec. 18, Good Shep- herd held a special as- sembly to inform students about J.J.’s condition. Mar- tyn Hooper, chairman of the UK-based Pernicious Anemia Society, travelled from Wales to speak to the students. “If you don’t have enough vitamin B12 intake, you will develop blood disorders,” said Mr. Hooper. One of the group’s goals is to promote awareness of the condition so doctors know to check B12 levels so people like J.J. don’t suffer. “Now that J.J.’s having reg- ular vitamin B12 shots, we can prevent further dam- age,” said Mr. Hooper. He offered hope for J.J.’s recovery. “Both J.J. and myself have the same condition ... as you can see there is im- provement, but it takes a long time,” he said. Pernicious anemia symp- toms include extreme tired- ness. “Tiredness is a word that doesn’t even come close to how they feel,” said Mr. Hooper. Other symptoms include having the fogs, described as a lack of clarity, shortness of breath, inability to con- centrate, loss of short-term memory, mood swings and irritability. “You can help J.J. when he returns to school by being understanding,” said Mr. Hooper. That might include un- derstanding that the after- noons will be tougher for him than the mornings and understanding if he forgets things like phone numbers. Though one in 1,000 people are affected by per- nicious anemia, it’s more common for people over 40 and rare among children. J.J. is the youngest mem- ber of the society and has been chosen the group’s poster boy. © Tim Hortons, 2007 Tim Hortons invites you to enjoy some time with your family and friends and skate for free at your local arena. That’s not necessarily true, according to naturopathic doctor Eric Marsden, because your immune system needs to fl ex its muscles from time-to-time and fi ghting a minor infection is one way it gets exercise. Most of the time, symptoms are due to the immune systems’ response to an infection and not due to the infection itself. If people contract a virus but don’t exhibit any symptoms, they could be experiencing low-grade reactions, indicating a low or compromised immune system. There is also the opposite concern - when the im- mune system responds excessively to a microbe. Known as a cytokine storm, exces- sive produc- tion of immune hormones or “cytokines” can trigger fever, in- fl ammation and other and more severe symp- toms. Ultimately, an excessive reaction is a real concern because it can lead to a more serious illness and greater complications. Many doctors often allude to this cytokine cascade as the reason we do not want to over stimulate the im- mune system SATYA YOGA SHALA Website: www.yogashape4life.com 713 Krosno Blvd., Pickering, on Liverpool Rd. Sisters Rachelle, 15, and Alycia Degenstein, 16, of Ajax, and Tori Giglio, 17, of Pickering, achieved triple gold in the Skate Canada test stream, passing their respec- tive gold skills, gold dances and gold interpretive tests over the past skating season. Skaters take Skate Canada tests through a nationally standardized testing system. Skate Canada Star Skate program consists of four dis- ciplines: Skills (six levels in skills, starting at preliminary through gold skills); free skate (six levels in free skate, preliminary to gold); dances (seven levels in dance, pre- liminary to diamond); and, inter- pretive (four levels in interpretive, introductory to gold). All three skaters have one more skating goal to reach, their gold free skate, which they each hope to achieve in the near future. More importantly, all three want to become skating coaches and give back to younger skaters the fun and knowledge that’s been im- parted to them over the years. “Yeah, I want to be a skating coach because it’s made me think I can make a difference in some- one’s life,” says Rachelle, who’s been in skating for 11 years, eight of those with the Pickering club. Rachelle adds she, her sister and Giglio plan to begin the process of achieving Level 1 coaching status this skating season. All three skaters have achieved gold status under the tutelage of their long-time coach, Linda Don- nelly, who each credit with keep- ing them striving to reach the gold levels, while also retaining the fun of being on the ice. “It’s the environment there (at the Pickering club),” says Alycia, who’s also been skating for 11 years. “I have lots of friends there and my coach makes things really fun.” Giglio notes Donnelly was in- strumental in preparing her and helping her focus on each of the gold level tasks. British squad coming to GTA on hockey playing tour English under-14 national team to play exhibition games in Durham By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The British are coming! And, while on Canadian soil, the England national under-14 hockey team will lace ’em up for a num- ber of tournament and exhibition games in the GTA -- including stops in Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa and Clarington -- over the Christ- mas break. England plays the Ajax Knights minor bantam ‘AA’ squad on Sun- day, Dec. 30 at the Ajax Community Centre’s pad 4 at 6:30 p.m. They’ll also suit up against the Pickering Panthers bantam ‘A’ team at the Don Beer Sports Arena (pad 3) on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. They play an Oshawa bantam team on Monday, Dec. 31 at the Campus Ice Centre at noon. England is in Clarington to play a Toros bantam team at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex on Friday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m. Central to the team’s Canadian visit is the annual Richard Bell Me- morial International Minor Hockey Tournament 2007 in Oakville from Dec. 27 to 30, where they’ll play in the minor bantam ‘AA’ category against seven other GTA clubs. Other exhibition games are scheduled for Barrie, Markham, Newmarket and Oakville against bantam rep teams there. The 19-member England team, says David Garrity, a parent of one of the English players, is made up of players who come from across the island nation, including two from the Sheffield Scimitars Ice Hockey Academy, where he serves as a coach. He says the players are looking forward to playing the game Canadian-style, marked by physical play, and learning more about Canada’s national pastime during their 10-day stay in the Great White North. “They like to see the physical style of play in Canada rather than the European pass-and-move style of hockey,” says Garrity, whose son Thomas, a defenceman, plays on the English squad. “It’s going to be a baptism by fire for them with the physical style of play.” All told, the English team could play upwards of 14 games (eight exhibition, a minimum of four and a maximum of six tournament) during their stay in Canada. Ironi- cally, that’s how many games a typical minor hockey team plays in England during an entire season, says Garrity. Many of the players, says Gar- rity, have been to Canada before Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Skate Canada Pickering Skating Club members, from left, sisters Rachelle and Alycia Degenstein and Tori Giglio earned triple gold in the Skate Canada test streams, with each passing their gold interpretive, gold skills and gold dances tests. She knows I can get nervous for a test, so she makes sure that I’m 110 per cent ready.” To pass the three gold lev- els is definitely a triumph, notes Alycia, a Grade 11 stu- dent at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School in Ajax. “It was really exciting be- cause not that many people stay in skating long enough to do that,” she says. Rachelle says to achieve three gold levels you have to use every minute of every session in preparation for the tests. “The whole entire session you need to be working. That’s how you get there,” she says. Giglio says staying deter- mined has been a key to her success while attempt- ing each of the gold tests, including the ones in dance, which she found especially challenging. “Even when you fail, you can’t ever give up,” she says, adding she attempted one of her gold dance tests four times before making the grade. “There is a point in time when you’re going to pass it. You’re that much prouder of yourself because you had to work that much harder to get it.” Giglio, a Grade 12 student at Dunbarton High School, says she plans to continue at the club despite starting university next year. She also plans to get her Level 1 coaching certificate as well as to complete her gold free skate. Skate Canada Pickering Skating Club also had sev- eral other skaters pass their gold tests recently. They were: • Double Gold: Courtney Engel - gold skills, gold dances; Katrina Gates - gold skills, gold dances; Kaycee Morrison - gold skills, gold interpretive; • Single gold - Jordan Hock- ley, gold skills; Melanie Pi- geon - gold skills; Other SCPSC special an- nual awards are the John Benton awards, presented for achievement in Skate Canada tests and compe- tition. While he expects the English national team to be competitive in games here, he believes it may be in for a rougher ride than it imagined. “They’ll learn that they’re not as good as they thought they were. Hopefully, they’ll gain some experience. The hospitality in Canada is al- ways fantastic. There are cultural differences. People in England are far more in- sular. People in Canada are more involved in their com- munities and are friendlier.” Hockey in England, he notes, is very much a niche sport, well behind soccer, rugby and cricket in terms of participation and inter- est. Sadly, hockey numbers across the country are down. He points out there are a number of factors for the decline of the sport in England. “It’s very much a novelty sport, I suppose it’s com- parable to what cricket is in Canada. The kids com- ing into the game are on the decline. About six years ago there was a fertile patch where kids were involved in the sport, but they seem to be falling away. I think there are so many other things to do.... Arenas are few and far between here and the cost to participate is very expensive. Ice time is at a premium everywhere.” Aside from the players, the English contingent will also consist of two coaches, including head coach Tim Peacock, formerly of Toron- to, who played pro hockey in England, a manager, a physiotherapist, a delegate from the English Ice Hockey Association and 33 parents and siblings. There are only so many plastic shop- ping bags consumers can store in their homes before tossing them away, but many grocery stores throughout Dur- ham Region are asking shoppers to bring back their plastic bags for recy- cling. “Consumers are being encouraged not to toss, but to take back their bags,” said Joe Hruska, Municipal Represen- tative with the Canadian Plastics In- dustry Association (CPIA). The not- for-profit organization works with municipalities, retailers and recyclers to increase awareness and rate of re- covery of plastic shopping bags as well as divert them from landfills. Statistics show Canadians throw away 25 per cent more trash during the holiday season in comparison to the rest of the year. “It’s a returns policy that helps the environment and many of Canada’s leading stores have now implemented it -- not just for the holiday season, but throughout the year,” said Mr. Hruska. With more than 400 Ontario retailers offering this in-store retail bag recovery program, plastic bags are being re- cycled and made into new bags, plastic composite lumber, decking and park benches. Durham Region residents have no excuse to ignore the program, with 24 sites to recycle in the area including grocery stores such as Loblaws, Food Basics and A and P. Recyclers are also asked to ensure plastic bags are empty and clean, in- cluding no contaminants in the bags such as paper receipts, food and liq- uids which must be removed before the bags can be recycled. Each bag should be turned inside out and checked for contaminants, then stuffed into one bag and added to the recycling bin at participating stores. For more information, Durham resi- dents are asked to visit www.myplas- ticbags.ca for more plastic bag recy- cling program locations. The website also offers statistics, myths and facts about plastic bags as well as tips and helpful information on how to properly recycle bags.
