But the chief that day was not Bill Douglas; it was eight-year-old Brianna Fequet. The St. Isaac Jogues Catholic School student won the fourth Fire Chief For a Day contest, spon- sored by the City of Pickering and McDonald’s. The big day started off when Mayor Dave Ryan de- clared her “Chief for a Day” and presented her with a plaque, fire helmet and firefighter’s uniform. She also toured the fire halls and ended her day with a ride to school in a fire truck to visit her class with firefighters. The third-grader got to meet Sparky the Safety Dog, spray the fire extinguisher, turn on the si- rens and learn how to work the 911 dispatch. One of her favourite parts was “playing video games in my own office. “I also got a little Sparky the dog,” she said. New to the program this year, Brianna will ride, along with her six-year-old sister, Simone, in a fire truck in the 2007 Pickering Santa Claus Parade. Besides the fun, Pickering fire inspector Steve Fowlds said “the whole purpose of it is to promote fire safety.” He said the process works well because kids learn all about fire safety during Fire Prevention Week, and they hear even more when Brianna brings her new knowledge to school. Chief Douglas said this is something kids actually enjoy doing, and mentioned they have a special knack of learn- ing something and putting it into action. “A program like this is im- portant because the kids bring the message back to the par- ents,” he said. He added this often prompts parents to tackle regular du- ties, like changing the batter- ies. Brianna’s mother, Jennifer Watson-Thorne, agreed, and said both her daughters “come home (from school) enthusias- tic” about fire safety, and make sure projects are looked after immediately. Although Brianna enjoyed her duties as fire chief, she plans on being a professional soccer player when she grows up. By Erin Hatfield ehatfield@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Quoting what has come to be his mantra, ‘It’s Durham’s time,’ Regional Chairman Roger Anderson hopes a meeting with local MPPs will yield good things for the Region. “Before they go down to Queen’s Park and get their marching orders, I think they should get some marching orders from the Region they represent,” he said. Mr. Anderson said the meeting, scheduled for Nov. 9, is meant to tell MPPs where Durham stands. In attendance will be all eight local mayors, Mr. Ander- son and Durham’s five MPPs. “I invited all the recently elected MPPs from Durham to a meeting so we can make sure all five of them are on the same page,” Mr. Anderson said. “Then they can go to Queen’s Park and fight for the things that are important to Durham.” Things like 905 health dol- lars being equivalent to 416 health dollars, infrastructure and the uploading of services, he said. “Also development charge bylaws,” Mr. Anderson said. “It needs to be changed so we can charge for things we should be able to charge for, like transit and hospital fund- ing, all the things that make a community.” He hopes the MPPs will agree to sit down twice annu- ally with Regional Council to answer questions about what they are and are not doing for the Region. “It’s Durham’s turn; we all need to work together,” Mr. Anderson said. “We want to make sure when the budget comes out Durham is included in trans- portation, infrastructure and Seaton.” MPPs reminded ‘It’s Durham’s time’ New chief promotes family escape plan ✦ New from page 1 DURHAM SECONDARY Academy & Middle School SUCCESS BUILDS SUCCESS est 1997 1 Cedar St., Ajax, Ontario www.durhamsecondary.com 905-426-4254 Durham Secondary Academy Celebrated the Grand Opening of their New Location on October 27th, 2007 Ceremonial Tree Planting Celebrated with (R-L) Mayor of Ajax, Steve Parish Co-owner, Kristi Duncan-Ash Headmaster, George Vanderkuur Teacher, John Kinsman Teacher, Brian Robson Teacher, Valentina Cvetanovska Teacher, Emily Wadsworth New appointed MPP Ajax/Pickering Riding, Joe Dickson Steve Parish, Mayor of Ajax gives congratulations with a plaque for the offi cial opening of the new location. This is one of many memories Ms. Clarke has of reading, and of her elementary school. And it’s part of the reason she chose to do something about the books that either suffered water and smoke damage, or were sim- ply lost in the school’s fire in June, 2006. “Everybody that went to that school was just in shock, dev- astated,” she said. “Your public school, a huge chunk of your life, as nine years of your life right there, it’s all been burnt to the ground. It’s kind of devastating to see something like that happen and you wish that something good could come out of it. You want to go and help out as much as you can.” Ms. Clarke’s niece’s classroom was located in the wing that caught on fire, and said she was upset that all of her artwork and the books she liked to read were destroyed. “I remember having that one book you always wanted to read,” she said. So, Ms. Clarke decided to call Scholastic because “In my mind, they’re the greatest provider for kids’ school books. I have a book- shelf in my den that is loaded with Scholastic books. I absolute- ly love them.” She told a representative about the fire, and that she remembers the books were old even when she was a kid. “And we all know school bud- gets aren’t that high, so I thought why not take a chance?” she said. When Ms. Clarke called, she expected around 50 to 100 books, and was thrilled when 1,000 were delivered to the school. She explained attending Vaughan Willard is somewhat of a family tradition. Both her immediate family and her extended family went there, and her children, niece and nephew now attend the school. “It’s a wonderful school,” she said. “It isn’t like a school as I would picture it; it’s more like a family.” Marian Bakker, the school’s li- brarian, said when she came in and began opening the books, it was “just phenomenal.” Although she hadn’t unpacked all the books at the time, she could see the books were for a va- riety of ages, and mostly fiction. AJ Groen/ News Advertiser photo After the fire at Vaughan Willard Public School, Meredith Clark called Scho- lastic Books and asked if they could donate some books to the school’s library. Scholastic responded by donating 1,000 books. Ms. Clark is shown with her children, Charlotte Suckling, lower left, Erin Jones, upper left, and Olivia Jones. Now, however, he’s being recognized and it’s prestigious to boot. The Ajax man is one of 45 to be named a recipi- ent of the Governor Generals’ Caring Canadian Award. “To me, it’s pretty amazing to be recognized for the stuff I’ve done. I don’t do it to get awards. I learned a lot from my parents about getting in- volved,” Mr. Manley states. In selecting Mr. Manley, the Governor General’s office stated: “For almost 25 years, Thomas Manley has dem- onstrated exemplary leadership and dedication through his work with children and with the Toronto Police Service. He has also served as a Big Brother in Scarborough and did extensive committee work in support of this organization. In 1992, he joined the Toronto Auxiliary Police as a volunteer police constable and has assisted with many community events, including parades and street festivals. With his team, he has undertaken many essential tasks, including evidence collec- tion and searches for missing persons. For three years, Mr. Manley also chaired the Toy Drive, which has helped to raise thousands of dollars in food vouchers and toys for women and children at risk.” The Caring Canadian Award was created in 1996 by then Governor General Romeo LeBlanc to honour individuals and groups who have made a voluntary contribution to improve the commu- nity. It’s given to recipients who have served for a number of years and are normally not recognized by previous national or provincial recognition. Each person receives a framed certificate and a lapel pin. Each recipient has to be nominated and Mr. Manley doesn’t know who put his name forward. “I’m not even sure what all’s in the process,” he says. Mr. Manley adds he’s hon- oured to be nominated “this way, definitely. I’ve been in- volved for many years with all these organizations. “The fact that some- one thinks that highly of you is pretty amazing,” he states. In 1989 he was named the Big Brother of the Year in Scarborough and in 1989-90, he was named Big Brother of the Year for all of Toronto. In 1992, he joined the Toronto Police depart- ment’s auxiliary. In 2004, he was named the aux- iliary officer of the year. He was told by the Gov- ernor General’s office in the summer “I had been selected to get the award.” As for “when and where” he receives the award, Mr. Manley doesn’t yet know. In addition, he was involved with his parish, St. Bernadette’s Church, the Ajax Spartan’s Minor Baseball Association and SU (Scripture Union) Sports based in Pickering. SU Sports has taken part in initiatives around the GTA and “we try to organize things through the police,” he says. The 2007 Eat Smart! Awards were handed out at the Oct. 31 meeting. “The level of commitment to these awards from area eating es- tablishments continues to be ex- ceptional,” says Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham Region Medical Officer of Health. “Receiving an Eat Smart! Award indicates a restaurant’s high standards that should allow customers to dine out with confi- dence at these local eateries.” The award is given to establish- ments offering more options in grain products, vegetables and fruit, and entrees and desserts with less fat. The goal of the program is to contribute to the reduction of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer, as well as illness due to improper food handling. This year, the Eat Smart! provin- cial co-ordinating committee also improved the restaurant nutrition standards by bringing them in-line with Canada’s new Food Guide. This year’s Eat Smart! EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Ajax man a fine example of caring Tom Manley to receive Caring Canadian Award T om Manley cares, and while his work over a quarter century speaks to this fact, formal recognition is on the way. The Ajax man is one of 45 people in the country recently named a recipient of the Governor Generals’ Caring Ca- nadian Award. It was created in 1996 by then Governor General Romeo LeBlanc to honour individuals and groups whose volunteerism has improved the community. It’s given to recipients who have served for a number of years and are normally not recognized by previous national or provincial recognition. Each person receives a framed certificate and a lapel pin. We want to salute Mr. Manley for his accomplishments, his sense of service, the example he sets for others and, as is so often the case with such individuals, his humility. “I don’t do it to get awards. I learned a lot from my par- ents about getting involved,” Mr. Manley told us. Typical in a couple of respects isn’t it? First, like many who give tirelessly of their time, Mr. Manley isn’t the type to seek recognition. Also, he learned from his parents the value of being involved in his community and helping oth- ers. He has served in many ways, and not just in Ajax. He has been a Big Brother in Scarborough and did a lot of committee work with the organization. A volunteer police constable, he has assisted with many community events, such as parades and street festivals and more heady stuff, like searching for missing persons. Most recently, he was out on Halloween night with Toronto Auxiliary Police en- suring the evening went smoothly. As former chairman of the police toy drive, he helped raise thousands of dollars in food vouchers for women and children at risk. In 1989, he was Scarborough’s Big Brother of the Year and, in 1989-90, he repeated, this time for all of Toronto. In 2004, he was picked as auxiliary officer of the year in Toronto. We could go on but you get the picture. Again, congratulations Mr. Manley. You inspire us to be better people. A visit with a small business owner might be just the thing I nspiration is a fickle thing. Last week, as I sat at a small busi- ness conference listening to Debbie Patrick of the Bowmanville Foundry address a group of entrepreneurs, I couldn’t help but think how easy it is to lose your inspiration. As life becomes hectic and work be- comes impossibly busy, we are all in danger of forgetting why we are doing it in the first place. Whether your moti- vation is to change the world or just to make a better world for your children, work without inspiration is, well, just work. Ms. Patrick, whose speech was aimed at motivating business owners to grow their companies, suggested we all find a person who inspires us and use that person as a motivation to reach our goals. “We need to stay in touch with what inspires us,” she said. It is a good piece of advice for every- one, I think, but especially for entrepre- neurs. Although small business owners make up 95 per cent of all businesses in Canada, owning one can be a very lonely experience. The hours are long, the money is often non-existent and the pressure to succeed can get over- whelming. But for those who do it, there is no better job in the world than watching your ideas come to life. As a business reporter, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many people who have inspired me because of their pas- sion for life and for their job. From the crop of young entrepreneurs who come through Summer Company each year to put their business idea into practice to the hardworking business owners who are just trying to stay afloat, I’ve found Durham to be full of inspiring people. And if you are one of those people going through the daily grind, feeling uninspired, I encourage you to visit a local small business and speak to the owner. You’ll leave feeling renewed and full of energy. I always do. Izabela Jaroszynski is the Metroland Durham Region Media Group’s business reporter. Her column appears periodical- ly. Izabela Jaroszynski staff writer Finding inspiration in your job is vital to your well being Oh, to be in school, former teacher says To the editor: School is fun! I just cannot understand how any child (big or little) can honestly say that they do not like school today. What with spirit days, fun days, food days, play days, sports (galore!), walk-a-thons, scary-hairy days, even gum days etc. What next, I wonder - perhaps “back-wards” days? In between all this frantic activity, the teachers have to try their best (and most of them do) to teach a very overloaded curriculum, while the students have to attempt to absorb as much learning as possible each year. Well, all I can say to both groups is, “good luck!” Oh! how I wish I could be a school girl again in 21st century Canada! P.S. Oops! I forgot the bake sales, chocolate sales, fun fairs, and the latest D.P.A. (daily physical activity). Take your police concerns to the top ‘I’m not here to react. I’m here to act’ By Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Balliram Chadee isn’t an activist, but the champion of a cause. And, the cause he’s helped champion for the past few years is promoting the Hindu faith and traditions, while helping immigrants settle in their new home. “I don’t call myself an ac- tivist. I call myself a cham- pion of the cause. My role is to become a bridge between those who have the services and those seeking the servic- es,” Mr. Chadee says. He founded The Hanuman Mission, which was incor- porated on Dec. 11, 2002. It started primarily to promote the Hindu faith and tradi- tions, he notes. “The main idea is to bring community services and sup- port to the immigrant com- munity in Durham Region.” “We wanted to address the needs of the communi- ty,” he adds, providing aid to elders, youths, those with a substance abuse problem or mental illness. The “marching orders” for the organization are to pro- mote the culture and tenants of the Hindu faith.” “We’re one of the only or- ganizations that started off as a Hindu organization,” he states. “We assist victims of disas- ter anywhere in the world,” he adds, noting the group provided aid to victims of the 2004 tsunami. The group is authorized to help newcomers settle into Durham Region and Canada, offering such services as aid with job placement and train- ing, Mr. Chadee states. “We bridge provincial and federal government services. We help them get a health card and a social insurance number,” he adds, pointing to other services as how to “access resources, housing and language training,” and counselling and mediation services, as Mr. Chadee is an accredited mediator and counsellor. There is also Hindu chap- laincy at hospitals. “We do a lot of assistance.” Project 2009 is an attempt to ensure the Hindu sacred text, Ramayana, is placed in every hospital in Ontario. Work on the project began last year and “our organiza- tion set the torch on fire.” The group has been a part- ner with the Town of Ajax, he says. “We’re the first organiza- tion to bring Hindu and Indo- Caribbean culture to Ajax. We’re the first Hindu organi- zation to work with the Dur- ham Regional Police. We’re the first Hindu organization to have a member sit on the board of the Durham Police. I’m on an advisory commit- tee to the chief of police,” he states. “I’m the first Hindu leader ever in the history of Ajax to stand up before council and bring greetings from the Hindu community,” he notes. This occurred when Ajax councillors were inaugurated in December of last year. Mr. Chadee has also served on the board of directors for the Ajax Pickering and Ux- bridge United Way, as well as the Community Develop- ment Council of Durham. He’s also a past member of the cultural diversity advisory committee run by the Town of Ajax. While it is a Hindu-based group, “we’ve never limited or restricted anything. We’ve never been restrictive to any group, person or organiza- tion. We provide the same service to any person equally, regardless.” The group’s primary focus is to support groups and peo- ple in Durham Region “as op- posed to going into Toronto. We want to build up Durham Region culture and the Hindu part of that culture,” he says. “We try to make the im- migrant community more in- clusive. I want so see a more inclusive Durham Region, a more cohesive Durham Re- gion.” He credits his daughter Aarti, 14, as being “the cata- lyst. She ignited the torch to start the cause.” It was on her ninth birthday that he placed the first Hindu text in the Ajax hospital. “She inspired me to do that. She said you have to be in a posi- tion to help others. She was the one who motivated me to get an education. If you want to help someone, you have to help yourself first,” he says. In August, he received his PhD in human and social ser- vices, with the thesis focusing on the migration of Caribbean Hinduism to North America. He’s been in Canada for 24 years, having come from Trinidad and Tobago. On cul- tural diversity, “I speak from experience, not a text book,” he says. “I say I’m not here to react. I’m here to act,” Mr. Chadee states. “Ajax has done a lot of good things and continues to do a lot of good things,” he adds, noting the group isn’t “a stand alone organization. We’re embedded with the Town of Ajax.” For more information, visit www.thehanumanmission. com. We’re opening soon! It’s true. According to a recent study by Statistics Canada, conditions such as panic attacks, social anx- iety, excessive worry, specifi c phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder af- fect 12 per cent of Canadians each year. That’s the bad news. The good news is that all of the above are absolutely treatable – often without the need for medication. According to Health Canada and the Canadian Mental Health Association, there are only two scientifi - cally supported treatments available for people with anxiety disorders and/or depression: Drug therapy, and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). Drug therapy in- volves the use of anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medi- cation, while CBT is a form of psychotherapy – or “talk therapy” – administered by a clinical psychologist. Scientifi c studies have shown that CBT is just as ef- fective as drugs in the short term in dealing with mild to moderate anxiety or depression, and more effective in the long term at preventing relapses. But, unlike with drugs, CBT carries no unwanted side-effects or long- term chemical dependence. “CBT is remarkably effective,” says Dr. David Diren- feld, a registered psychologist and clinical director of the Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Ajax. Dr. Direnfeld earned his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buffalo, and has been practicing CBT since the early 90’s. “CBT is one of the great psychological breakthroughs of the 20th Century,” he says. So what is CBT, anyway? “CBT is based on the idea that the way we feel and behave is a result of the way we think,” explains Dr. Direnfeld. “In other words, our feelings and behaviours are controlled by our thoughts, rather than by external things, like people, situations or events.” According to Dr. Direnfeld, this means we can al- ways change the way we feel and behave, even if the situations in our lives stay the same. For example, people with anxiety disorders typically have distorted thoughts: a social phobic may think that he/she will always be negatively judged in social situations, while a sufferer of OCD may think that be- ing dirty will lead to disease or death. “These distorted thoughts promote feelings of fear, worry or distress,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “They usually cause people to avoid situations that might precipitate the anxiety, or to de- velop compulsive rituals that lessen the anxiety.” Likewise, people with depression have distorted thoughts that promote feelings of hopelessness or helplessness, such as pessimistic ideas (“life is cruel”), unrealistic expectations (“everyone has to like me at all times”), or overly critical self-evaluations (“I’m worth- less”). “These thought distortions can occur automatically, without a person even being aware of them,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “Using CBT treatment, people can become aware of these automatic thoughts, and train them- selves to challenge and change them.” But that’s just the cognitive component. The be- havioural component involves challenging yourself to face the situations you may have avoided due to de- pression, worry or fear. This is done in small, manage- able steps called Exposure. “Through exposing yourself in small steps, you learn that you can feel anxious in a particular situation and you can still be okay,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “You learn that the anxiety isn’t going to kill you or make you go crazy.” All tolled, CBT helps patients learn effective self-help skills, and gain independence and assertiveness in dealing with real-life issues. According to Health Can- ada, CBT is now the preferred mode of non-medicinal treatment for a range of psychological disorders, from anger to panic, eating disorders and personality prob- lems. But recent research suggests that some mental health therapists may still be using treatments that are not based on empirical evidence. “It’s very important to ask questions about your psy- chologist’s level of training,” warns Dr. Direnfeld. “Make sure the person is registered with the Ontario College of Psychologists, and make sure they are only using scientifi cally validated treatments, such as CBT.” For more information about CBT, or to make an ap- pointment at the Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Ther- apy, call 905-427-2007 or email info@ccbt.ca. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, November 4, 2007 PAGE 11 A/Pdurhamregion.com Healthwellness& Most of us have memories of an aging relative who wore a large, unattractive hearing aid that whistled and became the cause of many complaints. It was not uncommon for them to end up in the dresser drawer. Now the Baby Boom generation is aging and ap- proximately 15 per cent of them aged 45 through 64 have a hearing loss. This generation may soon begin to feel the impact of the isolation and depression that often accompanies hearing loss. Also of concern is the recent study by the Better Hearing Institute, which found a direct link between hearing loss and income loss, demonstrating that hearing loss has a signifi cant impact on people’s ability to earn a living. Hearing loss should be treated as early as possible. The good news is that in response to the aging baby boomers, there has been a tremendous change in the hearing aid industry. The recent advances made in hearing aids appeal to this generation and target two areas – performance (particularly in background noise) and cosmetic ap- pearance. Current digital hearing aids use computer chips to reduce the effects of background noise. High- end models send information back and forth wireless- ly between the hearing aids, mimicking the way the brain processes auditory information. There are also devices which can be used in conjunction with cell phones and other listening devices. Cosmetically, hearing aids may not be as fashion- able as glasses, but things are looking up. Most hear- ing aid manufacturers make nearly invisible in-the-ear aids and small, light models that sit unobtrusively be- hind the ear. These hearing aids are well hidden when worn. They are designed to be stylish and are avail- able in fashionable colours and skin tones. Needless to say, hearing aids have come a long way since the large, bulky devices of the past! Not your Grandmother’s Hearing Aid Now the Baby Boom generation is aging and approximately 15 per cent of them aged 45 through 64 have a hearing loss. durhamregion.com COMING DIRECT TO YOUR DOOR IN 2008 Healthy Aging Health information for you and your family For advertising information call 905-815-0017, ext 421 Register now to receive complimentary Forever Young Healthy Aging publications, providing information exclusively on health issues that affect you and your family. Less than a month after bring- ing in two new goaltenders in the form of Brennan Potterzay and Terrance Reid, the Panthers are at it again, with some significant additions and subtractions by the OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League squad. The Panthers traded second- year forward Brad Fleishman to the Vaughan Vipers, a team that’s also in the league’s South Con- ference, for 19- year-old forward Richard Duncan and future considerations. Fleishman was the second- most productive forward for the Panthers this season, scoring four goals and adding 11 assists for 15 points in 15 league games. Meanwhile, Duncan was fourth in Vaughan team scoring with six goals and seven assists for 13 points in 11 games. The Panthers also obtained the rights to 20-year-old forward J.P. Perpich from the Brampton Cap- itals of the league’s West Confer- ence. Perpich had three goals and five assists for eight points in 19 games with the Capitals this sea- son. According to Panthers’ general manager Frank Robinson, Per- pich was added for experience and much-needed depth at the forward positions. Robinson says the moves were needed as the forward ranks are currently decimated with Bren- dan Hann, Greg Payne and Dan- iel Mandel out with injuries and Chad Beal continuing his stint with the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights. Of late, the Panthers have also bolstered the roster with the ad- dition of forward Guy Carteciano, who was put on waivers by the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack, and defenceman Chris Clark, a pick- up from the Smith Falls of the Central Junior Hockey League. Eagles ground Trojans’ hopes for a fourth LOSSA football title Eastdale scores 14-3 victory over short- staffed Pickering High By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Pickering High School Trojans’ Durham Region se- nior football dynasty is over. After winning the Lake Ontario Secondary School Athletics (LOSSA) for three consecutive seasons, a fourth was not in the cards for a Trojans’ squad that was decimated by injuries to key personnel. In LOSSA ‘A’ quarter-final play- off action at Oshawa’s Eastdale Col- legiate on Friday afternoon, the seventh-seeded Trojans fell to the second-seeded Eagles 14-3 to end a prolific run of titles for Pickering High, which also included two Metro Bowl appearances in the last two years, winning once. Leading 7-3 midway through the fourth quarter and locked in a de- fensive battle with the three-time defending champs, the Eagles finally got the break they needed. And, that break came courtesy of Eastdale running back Peter Mc- Dougall on a punt return. Using a wall of blockers along the left side of the field effectively, Mc- Dougall took the return and ran 40 yards to the end zone for the only touchdown of the game, giving East- dale an 11-point cushion. The Eagles were never seriously challenged the rest of the way. For McDougall, no touchdown has been bigger so far this football season. “We had a wall-left play and ev- erything just worked perfectly,” says McDougall after the big win. “Every- thing just came together. It was all heart right there.” Eastdale coach Ian Gilbride was delighted with the success of the punt return, something they’ve worked on all year. And, most of all, he was glad to see McDougall with the ball in his hands. “We had a little play on there. It’s nice to see something you practise come together like that. Pete’s been doing it all year. He’s a terrific runner with the ball and a terrific athlete.” Gilbride says the playoff victory to end the Trojans’ run of LOSSA championships was a definite mile- stone for the school’s football pro- gram. “This win for our program was huge. To beat a Pickering team that hasn’t been beaten much since I don’t remember when was big. It’s a big win for us and we’re looking forward to next week’s game,” says Gilbride. Gilbride was happy with his club’s defensive work in limiting a solid Pickering High team to only three points in a playoff contest. “We took their game away from them in terms of passing. Our de- fence has been playing well all year long and hopefully we’ll continue to dominate,” says Gilbride. Although disappointed with the end of a long run of success, Trojans’ head coach John Martini explained the loss of nine offensive starters due to injuries was too much for his team to overcome. Among the injured was starting quarterback Andrew Lim, who went down with a shoulder in- jury in the Trojans’ last game of the regular season against the St. Mary Monarchs. That loss, as well as the others, was felt to a large degree in Friday’s playoff loss. “We had a number of replacement players at different positions and the timing for the offence was off a bit. I’m really proud of their attempt, especially Jorden Birch who stepped in at quarterback. We had to make a lot of adjustments. “It’s a matter of the kids we were missing. If they were here it might have been a different story.” Martini praised the work of the defence, which gave the Trojans a chance to win right to the end. “The defence played really well today. I mean we played with two brand new corners (cornerbacks) who hardly see the field, we had a few players who played out of posi- tion and they still came together and they were aggressive and that’s all we ask for.” The playoff loss for the Trojans ended what can only be described as a frustrating football campaign. Battling injuries most of the season, the team was also displaced from its home field due to construction and had to play all its games on the road this season. “We didn’t have a home field and we practiced on a baseball diamond. We had every disadvantage in the world this year, so I think we did fairly well,” says Martini. The Trojans’ points came on a 30-yard field goal by kicker Jordan McLaughlin. Eastdale’s first-year kicker James Needham was good on 2-of-3 field goal attempts, nailing attempts of 33 and 25 yards in the victory. In addi- tion to a convert, Needham was also awarded a rouge after a failed field goal attempt sailed to the back of the end zone. The Eagles will likely play Holy Trinity or Port Perry in the semifinals next week. The second-seeded Eagles grounded the three-time defending cham- pion Trojans 14-3 to move into next week’s semifinal contest. DURHAM — After a solid regular season, the Ajax-Pickering Dolphins atoms begin their pursuit of consecutive league titles today (Sun- day). The Dolphins atoms host the York Simcoe Young Bucs in Central Ontario Minor Football League sudden-death semifinal game at Kins- men Park in Pickering. Kick off is 11:30 a.m. The atoms finished the COMFL regular sea- son in second place at the ‘AAA’ level with an 8-2 mark. In their final league contest in Newmarket last Sunday, the Dolphins fell 27-26 to the York Simcoe Young Bucs. York Simcoe came to play, scoring four touchdowns, one on a kick return. The Dol- phins’ defence couldn’t contain the opposi- tion backfield, as the Bucs scored on three big plays and only ran 14 offensive plays all day. The defence did manage to stop the Bucs twice in their own end zone for two safeties (four points in total). Linebacker Leigh Philip and defensive end Shakir Lewis were credited with the tackles that resulted in the safety points. The Dolphins offence managed to control the ball for most of the game but still came up short on points. The first Dolphins’ touchdown came on a quarterback keeper up the middle. Run- ning back Ben Paterson scored the Dolphins’ second touchdown in the second quarter on an off-tackle run to the left after a long drive downfield. The final Dolphin major came on a broken counter play when quarterback Damien White kept the ball on a naked bootleg to the right and scored. The point-after team led by kicker Shaquan Williams, holder Carmen Scala and long snap- per Hayden MacNamee was 2-for-3, account- ing for four of the 26 points scored. Offensive players of the game were quar- terback Damien White and running back Ben Paterson; defensive players of the game were defensive end Shakir Lewis and linebacker Leigh Philip. Meanwhile, the Dolphins tykes (10-0) also face the York Simcoe Young Bucs in playoff semifinal action at Kinsmen Park today (Sun- day) at 9:30 a.m. The Dolphins peewees (8-2) are in Osha- wa to face the Hawkeyes in semifinal action, also on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. 4 Halibut Fish & Chips $29.95 750 Oklahoma Drive, Pickering Call ahead for fast service Eat in or take out 905-831-1222 plus tax Large fries, large coleslaw, large gravy Substitute haddock $22.95 plus tax SENIOR SPECIAL AVAILABLE!!! Who does so much to make our world seem wonderful and mild. Perhaps God tires of calling the aged to his fold. So he picks a rosebud before it can grow old. God knows how much we miss them, and so He takes but a few to make the land of Heaven more beautiful to view Believing this is difficult still somehow we must try, the saddest word mankind knows will always be "good-bye." So when a little child departs, we who are left behind, Must realize God loves children, Angels are hard to find. The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) announced details of its first spinoff company, Hoper Inc., on Oct. 29 at Durham Regional head- quarters. The product produced by Hoper Inc., navdriver, is software that was developed by UOIT assistant professor Miguel Vargas Martin. Dr. Martin and UOIT partnered with local business- men Fred Read and Steve Vetzal to launch the company. The software operates by modelling the structure of a company’s website, analyzing visitor traffic patterns, and creating a summary of the most visited pages on the website. Jim Silburn, the Region’s director of business solutions, said the new appli- cation on Durham’s website will help residents get to the information they are looking for faster. “It looks at patterns of other users and assists the new user coming on board to find the information they want,” Mr. Silburn said. “If all of a sud- den trails become the most popular item of the day then that will move to the forefront.” The most visited areas of the Region’s website, region.dur- ham.on.ca, are now featured in a drop menu at the top of its homepage. Kami Baig is a web administrator for the Region of Durham and said he will benefit in his role because navdriver reduces the amount of time he’ll have to spend analyzing the millions of hits the Region’s website gets every month. “For my team to analyze the log fields on a monthly basis, it takes a lot of time,” Mr. Baig said. UOIT president Ronald Bordessa said the company and the co-opera- tion it took to get it going further sup- ports UOIT’s national reputation for its commitment to research. “It is one thing for the university to make these bold claims,” he said. “It is another thing for us to actually pull it off... we are creating businesses that will rival Mr. (Bill) Gates’s businesses, right here in Durham Region.” Hoper Inc. received funding support from the Ontario Centres for Excellence and the Ontario Partnership for Innovation and Commercialization. durhamregion.com Want to know what’s happening in Pickering?
