Despite some parental con- cerns the week before school started, students came home Tuesday excited, according to some people picking up their kids from Vaughan Willard Wednes- day afternoon. “My daughter is really excited because there’s new washrooms,” said Lesa Snider, who’s daughter is in Grade 2. “They’re looking forward to having new things.” The school’s construction was prompted by a portapac fire in June 2006. The public board elected to replace the cluster of portable classrooms with a permanent addition and, at the same time, do some renovations such as new windows, boiler and ceiling repairs. The contract went to Tasis Contractors Inc. in May 2007, but permits were not is- sued until well into summer, said Pickering Superintendent, Lisa Millar. Ms. Thomas said she was at the school last Thursday and it was a mess - dusty and with no walls around the washrooms. “Over the weekend it was a dramatic change,” she said, as students jumped rope behind Available at the following Bell stores: Pickering Pickering Town Centre 905 837-1212 Whitby Whitby Mall 905 725-1212 Available within Bell Mobility and its partners’ coverage areas where technology permits. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, September 9, 2007 PAGE 3 A/Pdurhamregion.com Potential candidate withdraws, saying party ‘isn’t going anywhere’ By Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A “mentally defeated” NDP riding association was one of the reasons contributing to Reid Scott’s decision to withdraw from the nomina- tion. Mr. Scott, a life-long member of the New Democratic Party, had put his name forward to be the candidate in Ajax-Pickering Riding, but he withdrew on Thursday, the day of the nomina- tion meeting. “I discovered the local organiza- tion was already mentally defeated. They don’t have anything really,” he says, adding the provincial office “isn’t going anywhere. They want to hang on to the seats they have and cherrypick a couple of others. “This is a perfectly winnable seat, yet we’re told we won’t receive any help from the central office,” Mr. Scott states. “I hate to do it. I didn’t enjoy doing it,” he says of his decision to drop out. “The spirit in the NDP is substantially defeated. I would almost be trying to run the thing myself.” He says of the local organization, “I think they’ve given up really, to make substantial moves. I think they would have won here. With their attitude, they won’t get very far.” Given the attitude, “it was better to pass this one up,” Mr. Scott adds. “I have to pass it up regretfully. I just can’t operate in that atmosphere. The downtown people (Toronto) made the decision they won’t help anyone out- side their circle,” Mr. Scott says. He’s disappointed at making the decision, noting, “I thought I had a chance to make a contribution.” Having one party essentially giving up “puts Ontario in a bind. One party isn’t even in it at all,” he states. He rips the Liberals, saying they’re “buying votes. Last year, we had a $4- billion deficit and now we have a $2- billion surplus.” The recent spat of funding an- nouncements by the Liberals is the “worst exhibit of vote-buying I’ve ever seen in 30 years. McGuinty’s promises aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on,” he adds. He praises Progressive Conservative leader John Tory for announcing fund- ing for faith-based schools, saying he’s “demonstrating the courage to come forward. It shows he has the capacity to think 20 years ahead. Immigrants will be pouring into this province.” The announcement on funding faith-based schools “shows the guy’s got some guts and character. He lays it on the line beforehand. A call to riding association president Kevin Modeste wasn’t returned. The redevelopment includes more than 75,000 square feet of new construction and more than 64,000 square feet of reno- vations. Infrastructure Ontario, a Crown corporation ensuring complex infrastruc- ture renewal projects are built on budget and on time, will work with Rouge Valley Health System (RVHS) to redevelop the hospital. But the hospital remains publicly owned, controlled and accountable. Interim president and chief executive officer of RVHS, Rik Ganderton, said resi- dents will benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, an improved environment for health care professional scientists, and improved access to care. “We’re all looking forward to getting construction under way,” he said. On the first day of school she went in to put her mind at ease and dis- covered everything was clean. Teachers are also providing good supervi- sion and making sure kids are in a safe area. She said the construc- tion situation is no fault of the school and there has been good communica- tion through newsletters, websites, and the princi- pal. “I think the school’s doing what it can under the circumstances,” said Ms. Snider. Parent Darrell Thomas said his son in Grade 3 fin- ished the first day of school without any complaints about construction. “He came out yesterday and said we’ve got all new stuff,” said Mr. Thomas, who added he doesn’t re- ally have a concern with the construction, although it should have been com- pleted by the time school started. “As long as they have (the construction areas) clearly marked it shouldn’t be a problem,” said Mr. Thomas. Parents Rhonda Brad- beer and Leslie Goodman haven’t heard any com- plaints from their kids, but worry about the distrac- tion the construction will be on their learning. “The construction part sat all summer,” said Ms. Bradbeer. “The first work that’s been done was yes- terday.” For a while before school started, they didn’t know if their kids would be bused to another school because of the work still occur- ring. Ms. Bradbeer said she would have liked more communication about what was happening. “Before the long week- end I thought how are they going to have things finished or at least orga- nized,” said Ms. Good- man. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Get informed about election issues Just four weeks from today, the people of Ontario will have a new provincial government. You wouldn’t necessarily know about it by the number of people who don’t bother to vote, but such an occasion is a major issue and affects lives across the province. For it is the Province which is responsible, in very large mea- sure, for delivering health care, education and energy to 13 mil- lion Ontarians. These are massive, far-reaching and critical issues that have a profound affect on us all. For that reason, what the party leaders have to say and what their platforms reveal about their plans, merits a close look and some concentration by voters province- wide. The leaders of three of the four major parties -- only Green Party chief Frank de Jong has been excluded -- will have their only television debate of the campaign a week from tomorrow, on Thursday, Sept. 20. It will be the only time during the campaign that all Ontarians will get a chance to see the leaders face off against each other and answer the tough questions the public want answered. There will be plenty of signs, advertisements and speeches from all the parties in the weeks ahead. You’ll need to pay atten- tion to decipher the legitimate promises from the pie-in-the-sky pledges. To be able to make a decision — even to want to make a deci- sion — come Oct. 10, you need to be engaged and informed. It hasn’t received as much attention as it should have, but this elec- tion will allow Ontarians to choose whether they want to change the very method by which we elect our MPPs. A citizen’s committee spent the last few years coming up with the method it feels best represents the current first-past-the-post system and one which provides party seats based on popular vote. So the chance to choose a mixed member proportional system which would reduce the number of ridings in Ontario from 107 to 90 and see a member elected in each riding in the current format, would be blended with a race for 39 proportional seats which would be awarded strictly on the basis of overall popular vote. You’d need at least three per cent of the overall vote to qualify for a seat, however. If 60 per cent of all those who cast a ballot and at least 50 per cent in 64 or more ridings support the change, it will become law. So take the time to become informed and make sure you make your voice count on Oct. 10. A pprentice unhappy at exclusion from help To the editor: Re: Apprentices get financial incentive, Aug. 26 News Advertiser. I think you should know that this photo op for Jim Flaherty and the spin put on the program is very upsetting to me as well as many other third- and final-year apprentices. The fact of the matter is, as a fifth-term apprentice who recently completed his apprenticeship, I am disappointed in this initiative. Many first- and second-year apprentices live with their families. I am a tax-paying homeowner with a young daughter who was refused this $1,000 grant so my tax dollars go to first- and second-year guys while I default on my mortgage as I am trying to finish my apprenticeship. And the ministry wonders why so many apprentices can’t finish their apprenticeships. Now, come tax time, I will be required no doubt to repay the employment insurance I received during my time in school. Michael Parker Oshawa More on the table than faith-based funding E ach edition of the morning news this week, not to mention national news- paper websites, has been littered with stories on the Progressive Conservatives’ plan for funding private religious schools. But, in terms of education, there’s much more to consider in this election than that. Anyone casting a ballot this year based on education promises should first take a hard look at the platforms offered by the PC and Liberal governments. First up, here’s some of what the Liber- als are selling: expanded after-school and online homework help; specialized schools for trades, arts, and so on; a $150-million fund for students in Grades 4 to 8 for class- size reductions, transition and other things; improvement to the funding formula, and expanded programs and funding in areas such as special needs and English as a sec- ond language. Something different that should catch people’s attention is the plan to ban trans fats from school cafeterias, prescribe a menu to conform to Canada’s Food Guide, and create an Ontario Fitness Challenge program to fight childhood obesity. This initiative is long overdue. Less appealing, though, is a plan to create a professional learning scholarship so edu- cators can improve their skills. That money doesn’t need to be spent, especially when wage incentives are already in place for teachers to expand their education. The PC plan is to improve the funding formula - fix gaps, including fair funding for operations, maintenance, and transporta- tion, and providing stable long-term fund- ing. It also wants to manage spending to focus on priorities, such as fixing substandard schools, spending smarter by doing more province-wide and regional purchasing, as well as more resource sharing between public and separate boards. As for student learning, it wants to raise standards for students, expand standard- ized testing, measure the performance of schools and recognize those that meet tar- gets with additional funding for their activi- ties. Other plans include listening more to teachers and principals; providing ade- quate class materials; and, limiting home- work to 10 minutes per grade level. It would also increase compulsory physical activity through high school and establish nutri- tion standards for school foods. Oh and of course, it will continue investing in early childhood education and a couple of other things. Hmm, based on the plans, it sounds like when it comes to education, the only thing the PC party has going for it is the faith- based funding idea, which many people are also against. The Liberal Party, on the other hand, is doling out all sorts of promises and, as we discovered in the last election, it has a habit of breaking them. Once again, it’s an election of little choice. For most, the episodic pain of a migraine headache can be highly debilitating, uncontrollable and defeating. It has been estimated that migraine head- aches account for seven million lost working days annually in Canada (The Daily, Stats Canada). Ap- proximately one in every 12 Canadians aged12 or older — nearly 2 million people — have been diagnosed by a health professional as having mi- graine headaches (1998/99 National Population Health Survey - NPHS). Migraine sufferers report an average of 1.8 disability days while non-sufferers reported only 0.8 days. More common in women Migraines seem to be predominately reported among 25- to 54-year-old women. Many complain of headaches occurring just before or during their periods. Others have an increased tendency to develop migraines during pregnancy or menopause. Hormonal medications, such as hormone replacement therapy and contraceptives, may also contribute to this condition. Migraine triggers Common migraine triggers may include food and drinks such as alcohol (espe- cially beer and red wine), cheeses, chocolate, fermented foods, certain sugar sub- stitutes, caffeinated beverages or weight loss supplements, food additives, particular spices and spicy foods and many processed food products. Poor nutrition, fad dieting and fasting may also result in a migraine. Additional triggers may include stress, bright lights, heavy perfumes or exposure to chemical fumes, inhalation of second hand smoke, overexertion, sudden changes in barometric pressure or altitude, change of season, lack of sleep and taking certain medications. The Homeopathic approach to treating migraine headaches In order to treat migraine headaches on a deep level and provide long-term lasting relief it is necessary to treat the person, not the disease. Homeopathic pre- scriptions are selected according to the persona of the patient and the complete symptom picture of the disease expressed by that individual. No two patients are ever treated in exactly the same manner because no two disease expressions are ever exactly alike. Under homeopathic care, patients may continue to use migraine medications prescribed by their family doctor until both doctor and patient conclude they are no longer required. Patients are advised never to discontinue their present medications without fi rst consulting their M.D. In all but the most serious cases, it is the aim of homeopathic medicine to bring about a notable improvement in the health and vitality of the patient on all levels – mentally, emotionally and physically. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, September 9, 2007 PAGE 9 A/Pdurhamregion.com Healthwellness ADVERTISING FEATURE& Slow down. Take a deep breath. Accept things as they are. These common suggestions for dealing with stress and dis- comfort may seem simple, but following through on them is often harder than it sounds. Sometimes it takes training to learn to let go of stress or pain but can we train the mind to heal the body? Mindfulness meditation has been championed for cen- turies in religious practices such as Buddhism, as a practice that seeks to free the mind of the faithful from the constraints of stress, worry, and self. Only in the past few decades has it been studied as a potential adjuvant medical treatment. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a program de- signed and implemented by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., founder of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. A molecular biologist, Kabat-Zinn studied Buddhist meditation and incorporated its key principles into a course harnessing the link between mind and body. Since that time, the fi eld has expanded to encompass over 240 programs across the U.S and Canada. Results of various clinical studies using Mindfulness Medi- tation have lead researchers to hypothesize that our body¡¦s response to both positive and negative life situations is elastic, and can change and improve through training. Perhaps, MBSR offers the key to tapping this unforeseen potential to deal with a variety of stressors, emotional, physical, and spiritual. As more research is done in this area, we will continue to learn more about the untapped possibilities of the mind in creating both a mental and physical shift towards total health and wellness. Mindfulness means paying attention, on purpose, to what is happening in the moment without getting lost in thoughts about the past or worries about the future. Mindfulness helps people manage stress, chronic illness, pain, depression, and anxiety by teaching them to recognize and accept their thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations, all of which are con- nected. You learn to respond to life consciously instead of re- acting to it unconsciously. The MBSR program utilizes techniques such as meditation, body awareness scan and gentle stretching (adapted for those with physical limitations). Participants learn how to cope with their health and fi nd peace of mind by working with the very stresses and pains that are the source of their discomfort. Daily homework with CDs and workbooks support practice be- tween sessions. While MBSR techniques are not curative for dis- eases or stressful conditions, they guide participants in learning how to relate to the condition rather than fi ghting it or wishing it away. Anne Dranitsaris. Ph.D. is a clinical psychotherapist in private practice at the Centre for Mindful Therapies in the Pickering Village. A bride’s fl ower options, from her bouquet to the cen- trepieces, are virtually limitless. If you’re hav- ing a diffi cult time choosing the right blooms, consider the type of bride you are. There’s a perfect fl ower for everyone. Here are some suggestions depending upon your own per- sonal style. THE CLASSIC BRIDE Simple, sophisticated and timeless describes the classic bride. She follows all the rules of wedding etiquette, and she takes tradition se- riously. White roses or stephanotis with pearl pins in the centre are the ideal fl owers for the classic bride’s bouquet. The classic woman’s bridesmaids carry cascading roses in shades that match their dresses. Her groom and ush- ers sport rose and baby’s breath boutonnières. Long-stemmed white roses in tall vases that al- low guests to see one another make for tradi- tional, tasteful reception centerpieces. THE MODERN BRIDE This bride is up on all the hottest wedding trends, and she’s more than happy to include them in her big day. She is in vogue and will- ing to think outside the box. When it comes to the bouquet, she should consider single-fl ower monochromatic nosegays or calla lilies in white or a bright color. Calla lilies in various shades — from yellow to crimson — are ideal for the modern girl’s attendants. Her groom might stick with the traditional rose boutonnière or simply a silk handkerchief tucked in his front pocket, depending upon the affair’s degree of formality. Wildfl owers for centrepieces or towering trays of cookies or another conversation piece are key signs of a modern bride. THE GLAMOROUS BRIDE Diva is the fi rst word that comes to mind when you hear about the glamorous bride. Everything she does makes a dramatic statement. And her fl owers — or lack thereof — are no different. A glamourous bride who prefers to make a state- ment with fl owers should choose something like orchids, peonies, giant peonies, or black-magic roses. This bride often chooses more sleek and simple fl ower arrangements for her bridemaids — if she includes them — because she should be the centre of attention. THE ROMANTIC BRIDE She wants to be a princess for a day and of- ten wears a big frilly dress with lots of regal de- tails. The romantic bride chooses fl owers that are cascading and pastel. Consider dahlias, a baby’s breath cloud or a nosegay in a silver or gold cone- shaped vase called a tussy mussy. Tea roses are a great choice for the bridesmiads, and the fl ower girl wears a wreath of baby’s breath in her hair. Decorative reception fl owers should be soft and demure in colour. THE BEACH BRIDE This girl knows when the surf’s up, and she wants to smell the salt of the ocean when she says, “I do.” Beach brides often dress in a slinky dress with little detail. Therefore, the bouquet should be eye-catching. Something like spiky blue veronica with hydrangea, white amaryllis, sunfl owers or birds of paradise can make a state- ment. The groom wears linen and goes sans fl ow- ers. The bridesmaids are more likely to have a tropical fl ower in their hair than in their hands. There’s a fl ower for every bride Fall Wedding Show 2007 • Advertising Feature Home Outfi tters Home Outfi tters WWW.THEBAY.COM Pickering 905-837-8691 Ext. 341 WWW.HOMEOUTFITTERS.COM Pickering 905-831-8506 CANADA’S BIGGEST AND BEST GIFT REGISTRY Only Canada’s largest retailers, the Bay and Home Outfi tters, can offer more brands, more gift solutions and more for your future together. F or any bride one of the most im- portant aspects of her wedding is her gown. At this year’s Fall Wedding Show you can expect to discover dozens of beautiful gowns to make your day unfor- gettable. All eyes will be on you as you walk down the aisle so the gown has never been more important. Joanna Carter from Bridal Desires has or- ganized this year’s fashion show and it promises to exceed your ex- pectations. Your bridal party will be outfi tted impeccably from this season’s exceptional choice of ven- dors. This season, the trend seems to be everything — today’s bride is choosing simple elegance as well as mak- ing a statement with full skirts and intricate beading. Ivory, however, is a more favoured colour than white. Karin Mill- er of KVH Fashions confi rms: “Brides really seem to be moving more toward colour.” Strapless weddings gowns are as popu- lar as ever while fi tted corset backs and sweetheart necklines are also emerg- ing. The use of lighter fabrics like taffeta, organza and chiffon are also on the rise. Today’s bride is combining tex- tures and fabrics to create the gown of her dreams. Lace is also big this season, as well as bold accessories to comple- ment their wedding gowns. Flattering your fi gure is never more important that on your wedding day. Gowns with pick-ups or ruching (gath- ered at the sides) have been a huge trend that has carried over the past couple years now, says Carter. The days of a bridesmaid having to sit for hours in an uncomfortable, unattract- ive gown are over. Today’s bride is opting for styles and fabrics that are more versa- tile — that can be worn again, willingly. Other popular colours include earth tones, pinks, purples in- cluding aubergine, eggplant, and always red. Mrs. Carter offers these tips to brides: • Keep an open mind, one you try a gown on, you may end up selecting one you initially had not considered. • What may look good in the magazine may not suit your body type. • And remember, it is you who has to wear the gown and love the way you look and feel in it. • A good bridal salon should listen to the likes and dislikes of the bride her- self in order to fi nd the gown of her dreams that best suits body type and personality. • Shop around: It gives the opportunity to inspire ideas for possible compli- mentary bridesmaids styles and co- lours. Most brides comment that they were never more beautiful or stunning on their wedding day. Lena Gregory, owner of Make Up By Lena, says in terms of beauty, she likes to fol- low the fashion trends. “I try to get the most recent colours. For fall, the look is more natural. Brides want the makeup on, but they want it to look as natural as possible,” she says. “However, people still like to sparkle — and we make sure everything is covered. We make them picture perfect.” The groom and his groomsmen will not be forgotten at the Fall Fashion Show. Tuxedo Royale will be on hand to demonstrate the lat- est trends in tuxedo fashions for rent or pur- chase. With upscale brand names like Joseph Abboud, Chaps by Ralph Lauren, FUBU, Calvin Klein and more, the men will also be breathtaking. Tan, brown, black and ivory tuxedos have been added to their exten- sive collection. They’ve recently added 11 new vests and dozens of coordinat- ing ties. This year’s elegant updos and sleek styles will be demonstrated by Pickering-based V2 Beauty Sa- lon while Sight & Sound Music Service will provide the backdrop to this year’s show and keep the audience entertained. your wedding day Fall Wedding Show 2007 • Advertising Feature 250 Bayly St. W., Ajax 905-683-2370 www.adriennesfl owers.ca Visit us at the show for our Show Specials wedding receptions • packages •décor •accessories • food Unique, Elegant, Perfect Unique, Elegant, Perfect804 Ritson Rd. In northern Europe, wine made from mead and honey brought good luck to the newlyweds, as long as it was con- sumed every day for a month. One month was known as one “moon”. • The Bridal Shower: The fi rst of its kind is said to have originated after a disapprov- ing father declined to provide his daugh- ter with a dowry. Her friends “showered” the bride-to-be with gifts instead. • The Bachelor Party: The groom’s last taste of freedom became a ritual in fi fth century Sparta, where military comrades would feast and toast one another on the eve of their friend’s wedding. • The Ring Finger: The third fi nger on the left hand became the ring fi nger several centuries ago when it was believed to be connected by a vein directly to the heart. • The Wedding Cake: In ancient Rome wheat bread was broken over the bride’s head to symbolize hope and fulfi llment. The tra- dition continued into the Middle Ages in Britain, when guests brought small cakes to a wedding, piled them up and asked for a newlywed kiss. Pretty soon someone decided to pile all the cakes together and frost them - and the multi-tiered wedding cake was born. • The Taste of Cake: Feeding cake to each other symbolizes how the couple will “feed” and nourish the relationship for the rest of their lives. - News Canada Why is rice thrown at weddings? durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 18 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, September 9, 2007 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, September 9, 2007 PAGE 19 A/Pdurhamregion.com Fall Wedding Show 2007 • Advertising Feature A Little Bit of Paradise close to home Carruther’s Creek Golf and Country Club www.carrutherscreekgolf.ca (905) 426- GOLF (4653) Gorgeous SettingGorgeous Setting Banquet HallBanquet Hall 9 Hole Executive9 Hole Executive 9 Hole Championship9 Hole Championship Wedding inWedding in the Greenhousethe Greenhouse The SpaThe Spa Golf • Spa Weddings • Banquet Facility FREE GROOM’S TUXEDO RENTAL PACKAGE SYD SILVER THE BEST MAN IN FORMALWEAR OSHAWA 22 Stevenson Rd. Although it may not be as prominent as choosing a gown, church or hall, it is certainly a very im- portant aspect to any wedding reception. When you get married and begin search- ing for a DJ, you will want to look for some- one who is qualifi ed, has client testimonials, as well as a plethora of experience and a great reputation. The professionals at Sight & Sound Music Service are celebrating 30 years in the business this year, and have been providing clients with quality service while always giv- ing them exactly what they want and by cater- ing to every kind of music tastes. Let Sight & Sound exceed all of your wed- ding dreams and expectations by providing you with the music for a reception you and your friends and family will never want to forget. “We’ve been local in Ajax for the past 30 years, and we do it full-time as a profession, which makes a huge difference in the kind of entertainment you’re going to get,” says owner Steve Ernst. “We all play the same kind of music, but it’s our expe- rience, coupled with the program- ming and presen- tation that sets us apart.” There are a number of differ- ent factors to consider when choosing the right DJ for your wedding, including whether or not they are a registered business, belong to a trade organization such as the Canadian Online Disc Jockey Association or Wedding Council of On- tario, and of course, the cost. However, one of the worst ways to pick a DJ is by price alone. A more experienced and professional DJ will usually cost a little more while the cheaper DJ is usually worth their rate due to lack of ex- perience or new to the business. Most couples do not want to take that risk on their wedding day. Everyone who attends your wed- ding deserves to have a good time, and Sight & Sound plays mu- sic that is suited to you and your guests — not the DJ. Make sure you give your music careful consid- eration, as it will be the last impression your guests will have of your special day, and en- sure you pick a DJ who can offer you a variety of music for every age group and ethnic back- ground. Sight & Sound DJs are experienced and pro- fessionally trained and will have your wed- ding guests dancing the night away. Come check them out as they provide the music for and emcee the fashion show at the Ajax Con- vention Centre. Call (905) 686-4810 or (800) 411-3294 for more information. But do you have the wine? Although the rush of sum- mer weddings seems months away (especially for anxious brides counting down the days), personally- made wine needs time to age before it’s en- joyed, so it’s never too soon to get started. Wine kits are available featuring grape vari- eties from around the world. How to choose? First, consult with the winemaker at your local wine store (fi nd a wine store in your neighbour- hood at www.rjspagnols.com). Next, select the wine that’s right for you by asking yourself these four questions: • What’s our budget? Standard wine kits (which yield 30 bottles each) range in price from $80 to $200. • What do we like to drink? Like all ele- ments of your wedding, your wine should refl ect you as a couple. You can make wine in an endless number of varieties, from Amarone to Zinfandel – choose a personal favourite to serve on your special day. • What time of the year is it? For the sum- mer months, consider a crisp white, like a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from RJ Spagnols’ En Primeur Collection. For a fall wedding, why not try a ruby red Australian Cabernet Shiraz Merlot from RJ Spagnols’ Cru Select line – both are award-winning wines, so you’re sure to please your guests. • Do we want our wine to symbolize any- thing? Maybe you met under the Tuscan sun, or got engaged on a trip Down Under. To commemorate those memories at your wedding, why not make a wine from one of the great wine regions of the world? Once you’ve made your selection, work with your wine store winemaker to get the kit started. In just a few weeks, you’ll be taking the The big decision choosing wine for your wedding Is your wedding getting out of control? Are you swamped by a massive to-do list? Wrestling with your budget? Advise your fi nancial institutions (such as banks and insurance companies) that your marital status has changed so that they can update your re- cords. It’s important to review all your differ- ent types of insurance policies, including life, accident, health benefi ts, automobile and home to make sure they refl ect your changed status. For ex- ample you may wish to update your benefi ciary designations on your registered products (RRSPs) and insurance policies and include your spouse as a depen- dent in various health benefi t insurance plans. Further, for added protection, you might want to consider having Wills prepared for you and your spouse as you build your wealth and life together. Changing your bank accounts Now that you’re a couple, you may decide to continue to have separate accounts, consoli- date into a joint account, or a combination of both. Some husbands and wives, particularly those who both work outside the home, like to keep separate personal accounts for spend- ing and hold a joint chequing account for household bills and a joint savings account for emergencies. It’s one way for each of you to re- tain some spend- ing freedom and still cover your shared monthly expenses, but it isn’t thrifty if your bank charg- es you a hefty fee to maintain each account. If you do de- cide to open a joint account for day-to-day bank- ing, CIBC offers the Unlimited Chequing Ac- count. It lets you bank as much as you want, with- out limits, for one fl at monthly fee and no monthly balance require- ment (additional fees will apply on any withdrawals at non-CIBC bank machines). For more information, talk to your CIBC ad- visor, visit your nearest CIBC branch, call 1 800 465-CIBC (2422), or visit www.cibc.com. Be credit card smart Review your credit card accounts and make the necessary name change, if appro- priate. Instead of having a large number of credit cards, why not retain just one or two and add your spouse as an authorized user. It will be easier to keep track and you’ll also cut down on the time it takes to manage multiple bills and statements. To help you stick to your budget, look into CIBC’s new CIBC CreditSmart features. CIBC Visa is the only credit card in Canada to offer this revolutionary array of features, to help you track and manage your card spending. CIBC CreditSmart gives you the information and tools to make confi dent credit decisions that are right for your married life. With CIBC CreditSmart you’ll get an en- hanced monthly statement where you can track and manage your monthly and year-to- date spending in 10 common spend catego- ries. You can set up personal budgets for each of these categories online and spend alerts to notify you when you’ve exceeded your bud- gets, or if you’re coming close to your credit limit. You can also create your own spend cat- egories, to track areas that are of particular im- portance to you, or ones that you want to keep an eye on. And that’s not all: you get increased security protection at all times with Credit Re- port Alerts, Fraud Alerts, and Identity Theft Assistance. The author and professor of journalism at Centennial College will talk about remembering Vimy Ridge at the Pickering Township Historical Society general meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 11. Mr. Barris will use photos, letters, memoirs and diaries of Canadian soldiers to focus on the human aspect of the story. He chose to write about Canada’s victory at Vimy Ridge not only in light of the 90th anniversary and the dwindling number of Great War veterans, but mostly because he describes it as the moment in which Canada became a nation. “When you go to the literature of the men - and women for that matter - who wrote about the ex- perience, you get a sense of that nation-building moment,” he said. Mr. Barris said other historians may disagree and say Canada felt its nationhood in 1867. But he said it (Vimy) was the first time all (near- ly) 100,000 soldiers fought together as one Canadian unit. And when he went through the memoirs of a Toronto Daily Star reporter, Greg Clark, who went overseas to fight, he felt the description gave him the means to describe it that way. “On his left are men from the west and on his right are men from the east of Canada and it’s symboli- cally Canada going up that hillside, and he writes in his memoirs, ‘It was my first full sense of nation- hood’,” he said. He explained discussing his re- search is always exciting because he gets reactions or questions he doesn’t expect and will always find connections to Vimy. The meeting is at 7:30 p.m. at the East Shore Community Centre, at 910 Liverpool Rd. Copies of the book will be for sale and the meet- ing is free. Want to know what’s happening in Pickering? Mortgage and loan rates, and naturally gas prices are what’s up. Being in business, I realize that to stay in business you have to make a profi t, but when is enough enough. In- terest rates have risen 70 basis points over the past three weeks for no reason other than to increase profi t margins, and don’t get me started on gas prices. There is always talk about Prime going up, and it is needed to slow things down and curb infl ation. This is great in theory, but considering that the vast majority of things that increase infl ation are not with- in our control, someone should take their head out of their lower region and go to the true sources of the problem, and force them to decrease the excessive amount of net profi t. Considering most politicians get their campaign contributions from major corporations, unfortunately, this won’t happen. Remember the old phrase “don’t bite the hand that feeds you”, this never applied more than in this situation. CONSOLIDATE NOW Get your monthly output under control now. Organizers hope to sell out OHL pre-season charity tilt PICKERING — Tuesday’s On- tario Hockey League pre-season tilt in Pickering between the Brampton Battalion and the Belleville Bulls is more than halfway sold out. Pickering Hockey Association president Gary Watters predicts walk-up traffic at the Pickering Recreation Complex for the 7 p.m. game will fill the remaining seats for the fundraiser for the Durham Dragons Special Hockey Associa- tion and the PHA Hockey Develop- ment Program. “So far it’s tracking that way, so that’s great,” says Watters, of the exhibition game being a sell-out with 1,000 reserve seating tickets issued. Watters hopes the game will raise $5,000 for the Dragons. In addition to gate receipts, there’s 50/50 draws and a raffle for $2,000 in travel money from redtag.ca dur- ing the game. Hockey Canada is also helping out by donating priz- es. The idea for Pickering to host an OHL pre-season game as a fund- raiser was a joint venture by the Pickering Hockey Association and Battalion head coach Stan Butler, who also serves as the PHA’s head of hockey development. Watters says Butler wholeheartedly en- dorsed the game as a fundraiser for the PHA and the Dragons. The Battalion head coach also has a connection to the Durham Drag- ons organization. “We agreed to try to do a charity game and (Butler) arranged it with Belleville. We agreed to split the proceeds between the two organi- zations,” says Watters. The Durham Dragons will play a game prior to the OHL pre-sea- son game, with the Dragons’ game starting at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available at Don Beer Arena on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the PHA Office. There will also be game-day tickets avail- able. The Pickering Recreation Com- plex is at 1867 Valley Farm Rd., with the arenas located at the back of the complex. Dolphins roar past overwhelmed Ti-Cats Peewees beat Clarington 68-0 in football, bounce back from Week 1 defeat to Oshawa Hawkeyes DURHAM — The Ajax-Pickering Dolphins peewee football team celebrated its first league win of the season at the expense of the Clarington Tigercats. The Dolphins hosted the Ti-Cats at Pickering’s Kinsmen Park on La- bour Day, sending them home to Clarington after a 68-0 drubbing. The peewee Dolphins opened the Central Ontario Minor Football League campaign the week before with a close 12-8 loss to the Oshawa Hawkeyes. The loss came after only two practices as many of the play- ers returned to the COMFL team after playing in the Ontario Varsity and the South Central Ontario foot- ball leagues during the summer. Against Clarington, the Dol- phins’ offence was firing from the moment they hit the field, tak- ing only two plays to post the first touchdown, then following up with a score on almost every drive after that. The Ajax-Pickering defence proved just as strong, posting countless quarterback sacks and following up with two touchdowns from fumble recoveries and an in- terception. Head coach Rob Colvin was happy with the victory, but point- ed out the next game against the Burlington Stampeders will test the mettle of his team to a far greater degree. Meanwhile, the Dolphins’ tykes posted a 20-6 victory over the Bur- lington Stampeders, also at Kins- men Park on Labour Day Monday. The Dolphins’ atoms dropped a 16-6 decision to Burlington, also in Pickering last Monday. All three teams play at Kinsmen Park today (Sunday, Sept. 9), with the tykes and atoms playing the Os- hawa Hawkeyes at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., respectively. The peewees play Burlington at 1:30 p.m. COMFL STANDINGS Tyke DIVISION TEAM G/P W L T P/F P/A +/- PTS Ajax Pickering 3 3 0 0 104 18 86 6 Scarborough 3 3 0 0 96 31 65 6 York Simcoe 3 2 1 0 108 40 68 4 York Region 3 2 1 0 69 64 5 4 Oshawa 3 1 2 0 71 44 27 2 Burlington 3 1 2 0 37 53 -16 2 North York 3 0 3 0 12 114 -102 0 Clarington 3 0 3 0 21 154 -133 0 Upcoming games: Week 5: Sunday, Sept. 16 — York Region at Ajax-Pickering, Kinsmen Park, 9:30 a.m. Week 6: Sunday, Sept. 23 — Ajax-Pickering at Clarington.
