Jim Flaherty, Canada’s finance minister and Whitby-Oshawa MP, vis- ited Durham College’s Skills Training Centre Friday to introduce a new grant, which will provide $1,000 per year to registered apprentices who have finished their first and second level in a Red Seal trade program as of January 2007. His announcement, made on behalf of Monte Solberg, minister of human resources and social de- velopment, was followed with an oversized novelty cheque presen- tation to Mr. Page, a fourth-year plumbing apprentice in Pickering who recently finished his second level in the Red Seal program. With the Red Seal, apprentices can practice their trade across Canada without needing to write more exams. “It’s nice to have extra money,” said Mr. Page. The $1,000 will help him with tool purchases and bills. During Mr. Flaherty’s visit to the Skills Centre, he met with other apprentices as well, including Ux- bridge’s Anthony Duran- te. In the Motor Control Lab, equipped with various gauges and coloured cords, the electrician apprentice showed Mr. Flaherty how students hook up a motor. “Simple for you,” said Mr. Fla- herty while Mr. Durante briefly ex- HE’S GOT THE TOUCH AROUND THE NET Jason Liebregts/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Dmitrii Serbin, right, reaches for the ball as Ryan Vickers goes up for the block during a game of beach volleyball at Pickering Beachfront Park recently. But, according to former police officer Paul Gillespie, it was just one in a series showing the child being “horribly abused” – the type of online crime a Chilean delega- tion came to Durham on Aug. 21 to discuss fighting. “Children are the perfect vic- tims,” said Mr. Gillespie, a retired Toronto police officer, vice-chair- man of the Kids Internet Safety Al- liance (KINSA), and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology’s cybercrime director in-residence. With the Chilean delegation, which included five police officers and five prosecutors, Mr. Gillespie facilitated a series of meetings sponsored by KINSA and hosted by the UOIT. The sessions dealt with image analysis, computer forensics and more, and shared new investi- gative methods to track online predators. Visitors also received a demonstration of the Child Exploi- tation Tracking System developed by Microsoft with Canadian law enforcement and led by Mr. Gil- lespie there is a growing number of countries working with KINSA, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Brazil, and Indo- nesia. “The internet has rendered the world borderless,” said Mr. Gil- lespie. Chilean Francislo Soto, an at- torney for the office of the public prosecutor in a specialized unit for violent and sex crimes, said the country is trying to incorpo- rate new technology and in that context, KINSA offered to help them get to know new technologi- cal systems so different operators can access the same information regarding such crimes. “We’re not talking about one time-isolated crimes,” said Mr. Soto of child pornography, using a translator. “I would say among the coun- tries in Latin America, we’re prob- ably the most advanced in investi- gating these crimes in terms of the technology and legal methods,” said Mr. Soto. Starting in September, Chile will begin using software on a trial basis with the goal of seeing some concrete results by 2008. Mr. Gillespie said the Chileans were invited to the university so they could share information and network together to become stronger and better at stopping the sexual exploitation of children over the internet. He doesn’t like the term child por- nography because it implies con- sensual and “seedy” activity, yet there is nothing consensual about it, said Mr. Gillespie. The average age of children depicted is five and they incur sexual and physical abuse. He added there are about one million of these images float- ing around as well as video. Mr. Gillespie said law enforce- ment officials realize the impor- tance of sharing information around the world for prevention. “The reality is, we’re good at some things and really bad at oth- ers,” said Mr. Gillespie. Canada does a good job at crime- scene analysis and tracing loca- tions through pictures, undercover work to gather intelligence from offenders to rescue children, and with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s National Children Exploi- tation Coordination Centre, said Mr. Gillespie. He added he thinks they can get better at learning from others and sharing their fail- ures. UOIT currently has a “sophis- ticated” hacker research lab for teaching students, said Mr. Gil- lespie. Through work with UOIT, he hopes a research facility can be created to help stop internet crimes. Bruce Hurley, UOIT major gifts officer, said they hope to get early approval for the research facility by fall so they can go ahead and start gathering funding. Not Valid With Any Other Offer. At his next stop, the Electronics lab, students discussed requirements for their trade. Before moving on, Mr. Flaherty wished the group good luck. “We’ll try to keep the economy strong,” said Mr. Flaherty, and added it’s very good right now with a lot of movement in Canada. Currently, Canada is facing a major challenge in filling the shortage of skilled trades employees and the government hopes to enhance the ability for people to train as apprentices, said Mr. Fla- herty. “This initiative helps support the visions set out in our economic plan for Canada,” said Mr. Flaherty while standing at a podium during his announcement. “I can tell you today, this announcement will have a tremendous impact on Durham College apprentices,” said Marj Rempel, dean of Durham College, school of applied sciences, apprentice- ships, skilled trades and technology. “What do you think you guys?” she asked, open- ing her arms to the many apprentices there who responded by clapping. Durham College president, Leah Myers, said the federal government’s announcement sends a message that apprenticeship is a valued path for post-secondary. Patrick Dillon, business manager for the Build- ing and Construction Trades Council of Ontario and Construction Sector Council Board Member, said it will help attract “underemployed and un- employed youth to the skilled trades.” He added getting youth into an apprenticeship is one part, but they need to get them to complete it as well. During question period, one woman asked why the grant is only being presented to the first and second levels, but not the third. “We are doing first and second years now – more can be done,” said Mr. Flaherty. The program is new and the government wants to see if it works, he added. Don’t miss our ad in Wednesday’s paper! SAVINGS throughout the store! DOORCRASHER SPECIALS! Hundreds of Great DEALS! A group of almost 50 students, mostly foot- ball players, hit the road on a Greyhound bus to help with New Orleans restoration projects, two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area. “I really didn’t want to come home,” said Jason Pearson, a Grade 12 Notre Dame stu- dent. “I didn’t feel I was ready to leave yet.” In New Orleans, the students assembled at a church, received their work outfits, safety instructions, houses and groups, and set out to strip down hurricane-affected houses the next day. Their job was to remove all the furniture, drywall, bathroom tiles and tubs, personal belongings, white appliances, lights, and un- stable brick walls from salvageable houses. “We just went in and started breaking stuff, taking stuff out,” said Jason. “The fridge still had food in it.” When he first entered one of the boarded up houses, the mould, cockroaches, lizards, and family belongings scattered all over left Jason wondering where to start. He said the place was as it was when the hurricane struck. In some houses, you could see the line of stag- nant water reaching more than six-feet high. Just beams and floors remained when the work groups finished, allowing homeowners to start rebuilding. Roofs also stayed, but are removed during construction, said Jason. Tasha Nimmo, Grade 12, said it would cost about $10,000 to have the house stripped and they were doing it as volunteers. In one house she was working on, the roof collapsed just as she was leaving. “It was scary,” she said. They had to stop de- molition on it because of the excessive termite damage, so they moved to the outside. “That was hard too because we found dog skulls,” said Tasha. Throughout the week, they had random people thanking them for what they were doing, said Jason. While driving around, they saw houses marked with an X to indicate if bodies had been found in them during initial entry. A zero near it meant there were no bodies. “It was pretty weird once we found out what the Xs meant,” said Jason. In the lower ward was a white board with red writing that said: ‘shame on you tourists who came, without helping, to see my pain, 16,000 plus died here’. Nearby was a statue of the Virgin Mary, its head decapitated. Being in New Orleans made Tasha more appreciative of what she has and she wants to help more. “It’s life-changing,” said Jason. “When we came back, we didn’t even know what to do.” Tasha said it makes the people in New Or- leans feel good to know others care. “They were pretty much neglected by their own government,” said Jason. Brian Hughes, a Notre Dame teacher and football coach, initiated the school trip, which went under the umbrella of a Catholic charity organization. Along with paying about $350 for accommodation and food, students fund- raised and brought thousands of dollars in do- nations to help schools and churches rebuild. Mr. Hughes said Dottie Bourgeois was their main contact in New Orleans. Although she’s not part of an organization, she has a daughter in Port Perry and was affected by the hurricane. Ms. Bourgeois helped ensure the students received safe and suitable accommodations, delivered boxed lunches to them each day, provided parking locations and directions, and gave them local reaction to the hurricane, said Mr. Hughes. Educa- tion reporter Crystal Crimi’s three-part series will look at students from across Dur- ham and how their efforts are making a difference. In part two, Notre Dame stu- dents help tear down New Orleans so the city can be rebuilt following the devas- tation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Here’s a look at some efforts students in other schools are involved in: • St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Pickering: a group of 50 students partici- pated in various outreach initiatives this year, including a Thanksgiving food drive for St. Paul’s on the Hill Church and St. Vincent’s Kitchen; a PlayStation 2 tournament to benefit Scott Mis- sion Food Bank; a bake sale for a Christmas food and toy drive; a multi-cultural night for a Peru school building project; and fund and/or awareness raising for Covenant House and Rose of Durham, ‘Canadian Food for Children of the Third World’ charity, a Philippines student feeding program, and Kids Help Phone during mental health week. • Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby: students raised more than $25,000 for the Craig Kielburger Foundation through a spon- sorship collection walk themed around children’s rights. A group of students also raised $6,000 and went to Tanzania during March Break to help build a school. • St. Patrick Catholic School in Ajax: through ‘Free the Children’, students are building a school in Sierra Leone. So far, they’ve bought 40 of the 60 bricks needed for construction, which will total $6,000. Students raised money by paying to watch a staff-versus-students bas- ketball game and to participate in Idol contest tryouts. They also had sports days and sold raffle tickets to be principal for the day. • St. Matthew the Evangelist in Whitby: in conjunction with Holy Family parish, students are fundraising to help build a medical centre in Malawi. The total cost of the project is between $30,000 to $40,000. The school has raised $9,000 and part of it will go toward con- structing a water tower to help provide clean water for the medical centre. • West Lynde Public School in Whitby: Grade 2 students participated in a ‘Nobody is Somebody’ program, in which they chose an area of need and were responsible for doing something to make a difference. The take-home project included adding an item to a blank doll to illustrate their efforts. Some things included a frog to represent pond clean-up, eyes from a student who fundraised for books in a Braille library, and eyeglasses from a student who col- lected used glasses for Third-World countries. Above, Danielle Douglas, a soccer player at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, rips apart a wall in a New Orleans house affected by Hurricane Katrina almost two years ago. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Provincial uploading could be all benefits If vehicles could talk, they might be thanking the provincial government, which announced it would completely upload the Ontario Disability Support Program and Ontario Drug Benefits for social assistance recipients by 2011. Premier Dalton McGuinty announced this at the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference on Monday -- and it could translate into $935 million over a four-year period. That would be welcome news to municipali- ties that are struggling to keep up with deteriorating roads and infrastructure. This announcement comes at a time when all parties have admitted the downloading of these services back in the 1990s was not fair. New Democrat Leader Howard Hampton an- nounced last week that he too would take over some of those bills if elected premier on Oct. 10, saying an NDP government would pay for some transit costs, court costs and disability assistance. Conservative Party Leader John Tory also acknowl- edged that downloading social and public health services may have been a mistake and promised to re-examine Ontario’s relationship with municipalities if he’s elected premier. While many municipalities will welcome the Premier’s move to up- load services, AMO says municipalities are still putting more money into provincial and social service programs than ever before. In 2005, municipalities poured $3.9 billion into provin- cial health and social service programs, up from $3.2 billion in 2003, mainly because of increased costs of social housing, said AMO president Doug Reycraft. “Does this solve all of the problem? Absolutely not,” he said. People must remember that we are just over six weeks away from a provincial election, and an announcement like this screams of political posturing and a great way for the Liberal government to get some positive press at a time when the elec- tion is beginning to appear on the horizon. But there are some questions that remain, such as what hap- pens if the Liberals don’t resume power on Oct. 10? Will this uploading continue or will the new government scrap it and leave municipalities with their hands out? Luckily, the 2008 municipal budgeting process won’t begin until some of these questions are answered, when uploading is to begin in January. But, despite how rosy things sound now, residents shouldn’t start counting the money just yet. -- Metroland Durham Region Media Group Make all shopping malls smoke-free To the editor: The Council for a Smoke-Free Durham Region is very pleased with the recent decision of Sherway Gardens in Etobicoke to become the first shopping mall in Ontario to go completely smoke-free. Their decision to ban smoking on all outdoor portions of their property including parking lot and entranceways is significant and forward thinking. Rigorous research leaves no doubt, breathing second-hand tobacco smoke is very dangerous to health, causing cancer as well as many serious respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. According to the World Health Organization, there is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke. We would like to see the residents of Durham Region pro- tected from exposure to second-hand smoke while shopping. We encourage malls in Durham Region to take the same proactive step as Sherway Gardens and make their properties 100 per cent smoke-free. Nia King-Hachey Durham Lives! Council for a Smoke-Free Durham Region Y ou’d have to have been living in a cave to be blind to all the problems faced by General Motors of Canada and manufacturers in general over the last handful of years. The statistics are grim: Ontario has lost hundreds of thousands of manufacturing jobs and the auto industry and its suppli- ers have been especially hard hit. The leadership at Canadian Auto Workers local 222, which represents GM workers in addition to thousands of other labourers in various feeder plants throughout the region, has done its part to highlight the challenges the industry faces. From well-organized union cam- paigns like “Buy Domestic” and now, “Manufacturing Matters,” to last spring’s day of action in Oshawa and a day of pro- test in Ottawa, the CAW has tried hard to make the case that jobs and a way of life are under threat. The industry has been hurt by the high Canadian dollar which hurts exports, by overseas competition, by concerns about unfair trade that benefits importers but hurts the domestic front. It would be natural to expect the union to do everything it could to help its cause. But recently, Local 222 leadership went too far when it tried to push through a motion that would force employees not driving GM-made vehicles to pay a $100 per year fee to park in company lots. They would also have to park in designated spaces in the back of the lot. The pro- posed penalty for those not displaying the sticker would be for their vehicles to be tagged and towed. The request from the union to GM Canada president Arturo Elias was quite properly turned down. It shouldn’t be necessary to apply bul- lying tactics to get those who work at GM to drive GM products. In fact, such measures usually result in a backlash and create division and bitterness among those who are targeted. With the quality and productivity im- provements made by General Motors over the last decade, GM-built vehicles, especially those produced out of Oshawa, are as good as any made anywhere. Just look at the J.D. Power and Harbour re- ports that consistently show GM Canada vehicles near the very top among any au- tomotives produced in North America. The company has worked hard to lower its costs, improve its quality and build more exciting, vibrant vehicles to attract customers. Combine all that with the generous employee discounts workers can collect when they buy from GM, and the company should have no trouble sell- ing to the people who build the vehicles. And if a worker still decides to drive a non-GM car? Well, that’s called free- dom of choice. After all, union leaders who stand up for their workers and the rights of all should have no trouble with the concept of people making their own decisions with the money they earn from their hard work. If GM is No. 1, it shouldn’t require a union strong-arm tactic to get workers to drive the products they produce. Tim Kelly is a Metroland Durham Region Media Group copy editor. His column appears periodically. E-mail tkelly@durhamregion.com. Tim Kelly staff editor Parking proposal was poor idea Woman hears stories from sexual abuse victims By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — When Brigitte Muleka watched an episode of Oprah about sexu- ally abused women in Goma last year, she decided to do something about it. “I said I have to go there and see exactly what is going on,” the Pickering resident said in an interview. So, Ms. Muleka decided to become a mem- ber of New Hope For Africa (NHFA), a chari- table organization of volunteers consisting of diversified backgrounds, hoping to give women and children the ability to become self-sufficient. She took a trip to Kalambayi in the Eastern Kasai and its surrounding vil- lages, where she met a number of people, and learned first-hand what types of problems - hunger, rape and violence - women and children face there. She went back to Africa for two months this year, but to a different location: Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which has been experiencing civil war since 1996. Since she speaks the native tongue, Swahili, she was able to com- municate freely with the women she visited. “The women feel really comfortable talking (to me) because originally I’m from that area myself,” she said. “That’s why they opened the door for us to interview them.” She added many times the women feel like others who come in simply take notes, gather data, and leave. In her travels, she visited hospitals and health centres throughout the area, where she came across women who shared their stories. Fifty-nine-year-old Madame Safi, a mother of seven children, was out in the fields with her friend when three Mayi Mayi soldiers raped her. When her friend wouldn’t give into their demands, they slaughtered her and took Ms. Safi as their slave for four months. After being abandoned and near death, Doctors on Call Services (DOCS) found her while searching for women in her situation. DOCS, a hospital centre, is unique in Goma and treats for free, women who require surgery due to sexual abuse. Most women need hospitalization from six months to two years. Ms. Safi’s situation is not unique, and Ms. Muleka spoke to many others with similar experiences. She believes people on this side of the world shouldn’t ignore these problems. “I don’t think by myself I’ll be able to resolve this problem, but the contribution of one per- son can still do something rather than being quiet,” she said. “I promised them I will do the best I can do and spread the news to other people.” B S erving: ~A jax ~ P i ckering ~ W hitby C all R ob:C a ll Rob : 905-706 -7047 / 4 1 6 - 7 02-42 52 S E RV IC E S • Tree Rem oval • Topp i n g • Dead Wo o d • P r uning • Stump R e m o v a l • Hedge Tr i m ming 20 Years Exper i e n c e F u l l y I n s u r e d F r e e E s t i m a t e s S P EC IA L S PR IN G R AT E S SAVESAVE 1010 %% on any TREE SERVICE Val id 2007 season BARK TR E E S E R VICE BARK TR E E S E R VICE Pickering Bonanza Bonus CopPickering Bonanza Bonus CouponsMetroland D u rham Regi o n Media Gr o u p ( 9 0 5 ) 6 83-5110 ex t. 292 Metroland Dur ham Regi o n M e d i a G r o u p 2 Location s t o s e r ve you Pickering T o w n Centre 1355 King s t o n R d . 905-839-8 2 2 8 Pickering L o b l a w s 1792 Liverp ool Rd. 905-839-65 05 We speciali z e i n •custom m ade jewelle ry • repair s • appraisa l s Watch B atteries $4.99 with this ad offer expire s S e pt. 15/07 Repairs10%off with this ad offer expir e s S e p t . 1 5 / 0 7 Pickering Bonanza Bonus CouponsPickering Bonanza Bonus CouponsMetroland D u r ham Regio n Media Gr o u p ( 9 0 5 ) 683-5110 e x t. 292 Metroland Dur ham Regi o n M e d i a G r o u p 30% Off +30 Days F r ee.*It’s t i m e to take 30 at Cu r v e s . c u rve s .c om 9 0 5 -2 31 -1 0 6 8 475 Wes tney Rd. Jason Liebregts/News Advertiser photo Brigitte Muleka came back a month ago from a trip to Africa with New Hope for Africa. She col- lects clothing and other items to send to Africa about three times per year. We asked readers to send in their summer recipes -- for the barbecue, drinks and dessert. After all, what sum- mer is complete with- out all three? You responded and we picked the top three to feature here in The Current and in special videos, which videographer Stefanie Swinson is producing. Look for those later this month at media- mash.ca. The winners each receive a $100 gift certificate from Halenda’s Meats. The winning recipes can be found in the life section of newsdurhamregion.com. In the barbecue category, the winner is Kelly Lawrence. She sent in a recipe for the Ultimate Chicken Burger. It’s a nice change from hamburgers. Cheryl Gomes, of Ajax, took the dessert category with her fun, innovative and great for kids version of the ice cream sandwich, Surprice Cream Sandwiches. If you’ve got kids, give them the ingredients and let them make their own. And while Ms. Gomes talks only about kids, adults would probably like to tackle these too. In the drinks category, Gary Grant send in his Peaches recipe, a twist on the old Fuzzy Navel. This is strictly for adults. Here are the recipes. Surprice Cream Sandwiches by Cheryl Gomes This is a great summer treat and a fun kids activity at the same time. The biggest surprise is that it only takes minutes to make and is always ready to eat! The cookies I made are called Coconut Extreme, Chocolate Explo- sion, Marvelous Mint and Valentine Surprise. More exotic sandwiches as Mango Tango, Mint Pistachio, Triple Chocolate Fudge and Nutty Delight can also be made. You’ll need 2 li- tres of ice cream, your favourite or Neapolitan, and cook- ies, such as Sim- ple Pleasure, Digestive or chocolate chip. (Note: Cookies should be about 2.5 to 3 inches in diameter. You can also get the type of cookies used in the store-bought ice cream sandwiches.) Scoop ice cream onto a cookie and sandwich another cookie on top. Try and get a layer about an inch thick in between the cookies. As you squeeze the cookies together, some ice cream will bulge out. Roll each sandwich into your choice of toppings, such as sprinkles, chocolate chips, cinnamon hearts. If you don’t eat them all, pack each individually in plastic wrap and freeze. They’re firmer and just as deli- cious after freezing. You can experiment with different ice creams, cookies and toppings. The Ultimate Chicken Burger fr om Kelly Lawrence 1 lb. extra lean chicken burger 1 egg 1/4 to 1/3 cup bread crumbs 2 teaspoons Club House La Grille Veg- etable Seasoning Toppings: sliced red onion, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, hot peppers Mix ground chicken, egg, bread crumbs and seasoning until com- bined. Divide mixture and form into four patties. Cook on pre-heated grill for six to eight minutes a side until cooked through. Serve on hamburger bun with choice of toppings and a side salad. Peach by Gary Grant We’ve all had the legendary Fuzzy Navel. Today we have a modern twist. 3 ounces Absolut peach vodka 2 ounces Dr. McGillicuddy’s French Kiss Vanilla Schnapps Ice Combine the above ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake for a while. Strain into two martini glasses. Top with a fizzy orange drink, such as Dole Sparklers Tangerine or Orangina. Sit back and enjoy. These pack a serious punch. 711 Krosno Blvd., Pickering 905-837-9332 (Frenchman’s Bay Area) Th e Original Hamburger PlusTed’s Famous Steak on a Kaiser & Onion Rings Th e Original Hamburger Ted’s Famous Steak on a Kaiser & Onion Rings The Big “M” Drive In The Best in Take-Out Since 1965 Chris is back fl ipping burgers SpotlightSpotlight on Businesson Business ADVERTISING FEATURE Fresh Homemade Dishes - Full Menu • Take Out • Off Site Catering • Daily Specials Casual Dining Reservations Accepted 905-427-3403 1755 Pickering Pkwy. www.papps.ca Join us on Pickering’s Largest Outdoor Patio! 2006 Platinum Banquet Hall All round restaurant FULLY LICENCED TO SERVE ALL YOUR FAVOURITE COCKTAILS! Thirty-year-old Andrea Moffat was born in Scarborough and moved to Pickering at age 17, and graduated from Dunbarton High School. She received an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), where she was student council vice president. Her main issues include health care, education, public transit, child care, a green energy plan and equal opportu- nity. “Fairness for all Ontarians is a big one for me,” she said. “I’m a diversity trainer by trade.” Ms. Moffat runs her own business by providing consultation on marketing and diversity issues in the workplace to small business owners. She has long-time experience using transit in Pickering and Scarborough as she trav- elled to UTSC and her former Scarbor- ough job for many years. She thinks a 10-minute drive to UTSC, for example, should not take two hours by transit. She’s also determined to help raise the minimum wage to $10 per hour, some- thing she believes will help youth pro- ductivity at work. Wayne Arthurs is running for the Lib- erals, Diana Hall for the Progressive Con- servatives and the Green Party is still seeking a candidate.Andrea Moffat Long-time NDP supporter has “orange blood” durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 12 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, August 26, 2007 NE091G407 © 2007. N., Ajax 905.426.4700 Betty Gillespie turned 106 at Sunnycrest Nursing Home DURHAM — Clean living and a clear conscience-- if Betty Gillespie had a secret for longevity that could be it. “She’s never smoked. She’s never drank and she’s always eaten very healthy,” said her granddaughter, Henrietta Gradwell. “She’s often said, ‘I’ve always lived with a clear conscience because I’ve never hurt anybody.’” On Aug. 12, the Sunnycrest Nurs- ing Home resident turned 106. Mrs. Gillespie was only 22 when she emigrated to Canada from her native Edinburgh, Scotland. She made the journey alone and had no friends or family here to help her. The Second World War found her working in Ajax’s ammunition plant. She was later employed in the office for Grey Coach (now Greyhound) but eventually took up work as a homemaker for the Canadian Red Cross after getting married. Mrs. Gillespie would outlive two husbands and in 1990, suffered the death of her only son, Jim Gradwell. He was 61. She has two grandsons, Mike Gradwell, of Whitby, and David Gradwell, of Toronto; and four great- grandchildren: Michael and Marty Gradwell of Whitby and Mandy and Ryan Gradwell of Oshawa. While all of her friends have since passed on, Mrs. Gillespie does have a brother, David, who is 99 and a sister, Cathy, who is 83. Both live in Toronto. Another brother, George, is deceased. Although Mrs. Gillespie is still in good health -- she wheels herself to the dining room each day - - time has taken her hearing and her sight in recent years. Interviewing her can be a little difficult, said Mrs. Gradwell. But the senior lived alone in her Essa Crescent home in Pickering until she was 96. She drove a car until the age of 91. “She’s a wonderful lady, always very giving and involved in the com- munity,” said Mrs. Gradwell. “They all know her at the Pickering Seniors Club.” Life enrichment aid Debbie McCance said Mrs. Gillespie is still “sharp as a tack.” Clean living, healthy eating and never hurting anyone are the secrets to a long life Ron Pietroniro/News Advertiser photo Betty Gillespie turned 106 on Aug. 12 and attended a small get together at the Sunnycrest Nursing Home. Her great-grandson, Martin Gradwell, along with his fiancee, Elizabeth Gray, were some of the family on hand to wish her a happy birthday. By Ronald J. Klein B.Sc., D.P.M. Podiatrist-Foot Specialist ASK THE PODIATRIST: I am confused by the wide vari- ety of athletic shoes and the choice between cross-trainers and shoes specifi c to my activ- ity. Can you help clear up my confusion? You haven’t given me enough information specifi c to your foot structure and sport type to accurately answer your question. I do, however think it’s important to spend some time addressing the purchase of new shoes. With normal everyday ac- tivities, the average person walks over 100,000 kilometres in their lifetime, about four times around the world. The foot must adsorb shock on impact, ad- just to contours in the ground, changes in surface fi rmness and propel you in all directions. The shoe type and fi t cannot be over-emphasized for every- day wear, but it certainly takes on greater importance with athletics. To answer the fi rst part of your question, a cross-trainer is not a shoe that will fulfi ll all the needs of a serious athlete, whether he participates in one sport or a multitude of sports. For example, the motion of the foot in a racquet sport with all the lateral or side to side movement, as well as the sud- den starts and stops is far differ- ent than the heel to toe shock absorbing requirements of the foot with jogging. However, the cross-trainer may fulfi ll the needs of the casual athlete or young person. Before getting into the spe- cifi cs of shoe types, knowing when, where and how to get a good fi t is a good place to be- gin, so here is my top 10 list for buying shoes: 1. Buy shoes late in the day, feet swell as the day goes on as well as with exercise; 2. Go to a store where the sales staff are knowledgeable, the shoe selection is wide, where the staff participate in your specifi c sport and they have an understanding of bio- mechanics; 3. Always have your feet measured while standing be- fore the purchase of every new shoe. Never assume your foot size is the same, feet lengthen and splay with aging. Not all sizes are created equal, an eight in one brand may be an eight and a half in another; 4. Shoes should be approxi- mately a half inch or a thumb nail longer that your largest toe and remember that for about 30 per cent of the population, the longest toe is not the big toe; 5. The widest part of your foot should fi t the widest part of the shoe and should always be fi t- ted for the larger foot; 6. The heel should fi t snuggly to avoid excessive movement and blisters, yet the toes should have room to wiggle; 7. Always try the shoe on with the same type of sock you will be wearing for the sport that the shoes were intended for; 8. When trying on shoes, walk around the store for sev- eral minutes and test drive the shoes for their specifi c activity. For example, try the jogging shoe on a treadmill or a hiking boot on an inclined surface to gauge for slippage; 9. If you have orthotics al- ways take them with you when trying on shoes; 10. Shoes rarely stretch in size. If it doesn’t feel good in the store, it probably never will. It shouldn’t need a break in period or an insole or fi ller, nor should it need to be stretched to feel good and don’t let the salesperson substitute a wider shoe because he doesn’t have the correct size. For example a nine C cannot be replaced with an eight and a half D. Next issue is the general shoe type (not brand) you may need. Whether you require a shoe for stability, motion con- trol or cushioning will depend on whether you underpronate, overpronate or supinate. That’s the bad news. The good news is that all of the above are absolutely treatable — often without the need for medication. According to Health Canada and the Cana- dian Mental Health Association, there are only two scientifi cally supported treatments available for people with anxiety disorders and/or depres- sion: 1. drug therapy, and 2. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT). Drug therapy involves the use of anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication, while CBT is a form of psychotherapy – or “talk therapy” – administered by a clinical psychologist. Scientifi c studies have shown that CBT is just as effective as drugs in the short term in dealing with mild to moderate anxiety or depression, and more effective in the long term at preventing relapses. But, unlike with drugs, CBT carries no unwanted side-effects or long-term chemical dependence. “CBT is remarkably effective,” says Dr. David Direnfeld, a registered psychologist and clinical director of the Centre for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Ajax, Ontario. Dr. Direnfeld earned his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Buf- falo, and has been practicing CBT since the early ’90s. “CBT is one of the great psychological break- throughs of the 20th Century,” he says. So what is CBT, anyway? “CBT is based on the idea that the way we feel and behave is a result of the way we think,” ex- plains Dr. Direnfeld. “In other words, our feelings and behaviours are controlled by our thoughts, rather than by external things, like people, situa- tions or events.” For example, people with anxiety disorders typi- cally have distorted thoughts: a social phobic may think that he/she will always be negatively judged in social situations, while a sufferer of OCD may think that being dirty will lead to disease or death. “These distorted thoughts promote feelings of fear, worry or distress,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “They usually cause people to avoid situations that might pre- cipitate the anxiety, or develop compulsive rituals that lessen the anxiety.” Likewise, people with depression have distorted thoughts that promote feelings of hopelessness or helplessness, such as pessimistic ideas, unrealistic expectations, or overly critical self-evaluations. “These thought distortions can occur automati- cally without a person even being aware of them,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “Using CBT treatment, people can become aware of these automatic thoughts, and train themselves to challenge and change them.” But that’s just the cognitive component. The be- havioural component involves challenging your- self to face the situations you may have avoided due to depression, worry or fear. This is done in small, manageable steps called ‘exposure’. “Through exposing yourself in small steps, you learn that you can feel anxious in a particular situ- ation and you can still be okay,” says Dr. Direnfeld. “You learn that the anxiety isn’t going to kill you or make you go crazy.” Finding the right therapist and approach to treatment is vital. “It’s very important to ask ques- tions about your psychologist’s level of training,” warns Dr. Direnfeld. “Make sure the person is reg- istered with the Ontario College of Psychologists, and make sure they are only using scientifi cally validated treatments, such as CBT. The talented 18-year-old Pickering pitcher had made plans to attend Queen’s Univer- sity in Kingston in the fall and, in fact, had auditioned successfully and was offered a spot in the university’s music program. But, those plans changed dras- tically for Greco while playing for the Whitby Eagles midget (19-and-under) team at the pro- vincial fastball championships in Whitby in July. Viewing the proceedings in Whitby and scouting prospects was none other than Universi- ty of California (Pennsylvania) w omen’s softball coach Rick Bertagnolli, who was impressed not only with Greco’s pitching ability, but also her work ethic and attitude toward the game. The University of California Vulcans’ coach offered a scholar- ship to Greco who, upon visiting the California, Penn. campus, signed on to fulfil her dream of competing in softball and study- ing in the U.S. for the next four years, where she will study el- ementary education. “I loved it,” says Greco of the U. of California, located just south of Pittsburgh, which competes at the NCAA Division II level. “The second I saw the campus, I knew it was going to be the perfect school for me.” Most of all, she notes, it was coach Bertagnolli and his win- ning women’s softball program that swayed her to come aboard. “The coach there is very in- tense and it’s the level of ball I want to play. He has the win- ningest record among Division II coaches in the states. He’s very good at winning,” she says. With a university women’s softball program that produces winning seasons year after year, not only in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) but also at the national level, you would think Greco would be concerned, as a freshman player, where she fits in. Not so. Greco says Bertagnolli is all about work ethic and at- titude and less concerned about whether you’re a freshman or a senior. “He wants me to try hard and to work hard. That’s pretty much all he wants. When you work hard good things happen and when you work hard you win games. It’s all about work ethic with coach Bertagnolli. With him, whether you’re a freshman, junior or senior, if you don’t work hard, he’s not going to play you,” says Greco, who’ll be used predominantly as a pitcher, but can also play second base. “He knows I work very hard and he knows I produce results, so I won’t have any trouble get- ting playing time because I have a very good work ethic.” The Notre Dame Catholic Sec- ondary School graduate received a number of U.S. offers from six other universities, including ones from Ohio Valley Univer- sity, Slippery Rock University, Florida Tech University, Denni- son University, the College of Wooster, Chatham College and Youngstown State University be- fore opting to attend the Univer- sity of California. For the past three years, Greco has been a pitcher with the Whitby Eagles midgets, a trav- elling team that plays in tour- naments exclusively throughout the summer, mostly in the U.S. This year, she helped the team finish fourth at the provincials and come within a game of qual- ifying for nationals before going down to defeat to a veteran Ch- inguacousy squad. She notes playing against U.S. competition has definitely helped her in the pursuit of a scholarship to the states. “For sure, it gives you a lot of exposure. Different (U.S.) coaches are at all the tourna- ments, although they attend a couple of the tournaments here (in Canada),” she says. Greco left on Wednesday for Pennsylvania and will begin practising with the Vulcans after the Labour Day weekend. The women’s softball team plays a fall season as well as several tournaments. The main season is in the spring, with the Vulcans expected to begin the march toward the confer- ence championships with a 10- day trip to Florida during spring break. SPORTS sportsdurhamregion.com Pickering players named to national U22 squad Wakefield, Allen to play for Canada against Americans in Lake Placid PICKERING — Two city ath- letes cracked the lineup for Can- ada’s under-22 national women’s hockey team. Forward Jennifer Wakefield and defenceman Cristin Allen were named to the 22-player roster last Sunday and will represent Canada at a three-game exhibition series against the U.S. national wom- en’s under- 22 team in Lake Placid, New York. The Can- ada-U.S. se- ries began on Thurs- day at the Lake Placid Olympic Center and continues through until Sunday, Aug. 26. Allen and Wakefield -- both graduates of the Durham Junior Lightning program -- are new- comers to the under-22 national team. Allen was one of 20 players named to the team out of the na- tional women’s under-22 team’s seven-day selection camp at York University in Toronto, attended by 40 players this summer. Wake- field earned one of two remaining spots with the team after the na- tional women’s under-19 team’s evaluation camp in July. Allen and Wakefield are two of eight rookies on the squad; Allen is one of six defencemen on the national team, while Wakefield is one of 13 forwards. Allen currently plays on an athletic scholarship for the Uni- versity of Connecticut Huskies women’s hockey team. Wakefield begins an athletic scholarship at the University of New Hampshire in the fall, where she’ll play for the Wildcats women’s hockey team. Last year, she played with the Etobicoke Dolphins of the now-defunct National Women’s Hockey League. It was the question of the day Saturday for Volkswa- gen enthusiasts at Picker- ing’s Pacione Automotive Group. Local VW club Bugs “R” Us hosted Bugfest 2007 Air and Watercooled VW Dyno Day to allow VW drivers of all models to see how their car stacked up. Using a dynomometre, club members tested their car’s horsepower. Many of the guys have taken cars that came stocked with 25 horsepow- er engines and worked on them to surpass 200 horse- power. “We’re having a little friendly competition to see who did the most and who did the best to get their horsepower up to that 200 mark,” said Steve Butosi. The club member has been interested in Volk- swagens since he bought his first car in high school. Now, at age 34, he helps organize events like Satur- day’s Dyno Day with the help of his club mates. Like all true competitions, friendly or not, there can only be one winner. Reach- ing 227 horsepower, Greg Strogen and his ‘56 beetle had the highest horsepower of the day. Sandeep Syan ran his beetle on the dynomome- tre, and his car recorded an impressive 195 horsepow- er. Mr. Syan has been work- ing on upgrading his Beetle for 12 years. “I’ve never dynoed my car before,” he said. “So, I’m pretty happy.” A portion of the proceeds raised over the weekend will be donated to the Ca- nadian Cancer Society.
