lemonade brings out
community support
By Erin Hatfield

DURHAM — A sour experience
has turned sweet for six-year-old
Gabriel Gilbert.
The young Ajax resident had
hit a wall in his recent attempt to
raise money for The Hospital for
Sick Children. Local businesses
and even the Town of Ajax weren’t
willing to let Gabriel set up his
lemonade stand on their property
because of issues of insurance and
liability.
But, after Gabriel and his father,
Adam Gilbert, told their story in the
News Advertiser, an outpouring of
support came from the communi-
ties of Ajax and Pickering. After
the story appeared in the paper
nearly a dozen people called with
offers to let Gabriel set up in front
of their businesses.
“We have been very blessed
by the community,” said Loretta
Gilbert, Gabriel’s mother. “It was
amazing for them to step-up in
this way.”
With the community behind
him, Gabriel was able to raise $426
in a single weekend.
They set their stand up on Fri-
day night at the PartsSource on
Kingston Road in Pickering dur-
ing the Friday Classic Car Cruise
Night.
In addition to allowing Gabriel
to set up in the parking lot, em-
ployees of PartSource garnered a
$100 donation for Gabriel.
The following day the Gilberts
set up in the parking lot of the
Canadian Tire in Ajax during the
Road Legends Cruises.
“We squeezed 160 lemons,” said
Ms. Gilbert who said they sold in
the area of 60 litres of lemonade.
Cups of fresh squeezed lemonade
sold for $1 and Ms. Gilbert said
lots of donations came in on top
of that.
Ms. Gilbert said it was touching
to see, especially when a six-year-
old boy gave Gabriel a $20 bill out
of his piggy bank.
“Gabriel said to him, ‘you’re a
good kid’,” Ms. Gilbert said. “One
six year old talking to another six
year old, it was so touching.”

Cabbies
beaten,
threatened
with gun
PICKERING — Taxi drivers were
assaulted and threatened in two
separate early morning assaults
recently in Pickering, police say.
Durham cops are looking for
witnesses to the incidents, both
of which occurred when cab driv-
ers were confronted by young sus-
pects believed to be in their teens
or early 20s.
In the first occurrence, a 51-year-
old driver told investigators he’d
been taking a nap in the parking
lot at the Pickering Town Centre
around 3 a.m. Aug. 3 when he was
accosted by two young men, one
of whom held a gun to the victim’s
face and demanded money.
The driver started his vehicle
and sped away before contacting
police. He said the two suspects,
who had been wearing ski masks,
had fled the scene on bicycles.
And around 5:35 a.m. Wednes-
day a driver was napping in his car
near Denmar Road and Pickering
Parkway when a young suspect
climbed into the front seat and
reached over to grab the car keys.
The 61-year-old driver was as-
saulted by the suspect when he
leapt out of the car and two other
males joined in the attack, police
said.
The teenaged suspects, two of
whom are black, ran off with cash
stolen from the driver; a passerby
called police.
Anyone with information on the
incidents is asked to call police
at 905-579-1520, extension 2544
or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-
8477.

www.durhamregion.comCATCH UP ONLINE AT Conference attendees
forced from church
By Keith Gilligan
kgilligan@durhamregion
AJAX — A leadership conference at the Car-
ruthers Creek Community Church was interrupt-
ed Friday morning after a gas main in front of the
facility was ruptured.
About 520 people were attending the confer-
ence when the incident occurred, around 10:45
a.m. The church is at the corner of Bayly Street
and Audley Road.
Dave Clarke, the platoon chief for the Ajax Fire
and Emergency Services, said workers installing
watermains punctured a one-inch, high-pressure
gas main.
Bayly Street was closed in both directions for
more than an hour as crews worked to close the
leak.
Mr. Clarke expected Bayly Street would be
closed for more than two hours as workers had to
cut a hole to shut off the leak.
There were no injuries caused by the leak, Mr.
Clarke added.
Gary Webster was attending the conference
when the leak occurred.
“We got a call and we evacuated when the fire
department asked us to,” Mr. Webster said.
“You could see all the dust blowing in the air”
from the pressure in the gas line, he added.
John Wiersma was also attending the confer-
ence, which was centred in Chicago and telecast
live to the Ajax church. People from across the
GTA were attending, as well as some from as far
away as Vancouver and Quebec.
“We were advised a gas main had been cut.
The senior pastor asked us to orderly evacuate
the church. It took five to 10 minutes and here we
are,” Mr. Wiersma said. Some of the conference
attendees said they could see a plume of gas go up
in the air. The wind was blowing southerly causing
gas to blow over the church. “You could smell it as
well,” Mr. Wiersma said. Firefighters checked the
inside of the church to ensure the atmosphere was
clear before letting conference attendees go back
inside.

John Ekker stands in front of the solar panels that provide his home with three kilowatts of electricity a day.
Raglan resident adds
solar panels to his
clean energy supply
By Crystal Crimi
ccrimi@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — When John Ekker re-
tires, he likely won’t have to worry
about his heating and electricity bills.
The Raglan resident has spent the
last several months making his house
more self-sufficient by installing geo-
thermal heating and cooling and more
recently, a solar panel system.
“In the next couple of years, we’d like
to be off the grid,” said Mr. Ekker.
On July 31, he fired up the more
than $20,000, 16-panel system, which
produces about 3 KW of power a day
- enough to cut his already reduced
energy costs from about $250 a month
to $100. To run the house completely
off solar, he’ll need to increase the
panels to produce 4.5 KW. Mr. Ekker
said when he did his calculations for
the solar panels, he didn’t take phan-
tom power into consideration and will
eventually have to add more panels to
increase its output.
His solar generation system uses
net-metering, which allows excess en-
ergy produced during the day to go
back into the meter for a credit, so it
can be used during the evening when
more people are home.
Before adding the solar panels, Mr.
Ekker was already enjoying the cost
savings from his geothermal system
installed about four months ago.
“It’s working and I’m happy,” said
Mr. Ekker.
His six-tonne heat pump and cooling
system is six-feet deep in the ground
and uses trenches to circulate water for
energy.
Although it cost him about $24,000,
he’ll get about $8,000 back in rebates,
as well as his monthly cost savings for
heating, cooling, and hot water.
“Being we have four women in the
house, I don’t have to tell you how
much hot water you use,” said Mr.
Ekker. Since the pump’s installation,
the family spends $7 a month instead
of $100 to $120, he added. Mr. Ekker
said the heat pump works like a fridge
by taking liquid to a gas state and re-
moving the heat or cold. When the
water’s heated, it’s moved to a pre-
heating tank.
So far this year, he’s only spent about
$32 to heat his pool, whereas others
can spend $600 to $3,000 for the sea-
son.
At 45, Mr. Ekker tells his friends to
think about getting into renewable en-
ergy. Although there’s the initial in-
vestment, they won’t have the burden
of paying for energy and delivery fees
when they retire and are on a fixed
income.
Mr. Ekker got into the clean energy
business after spending 25 years as a
contractor. He built his Raglan home in
2000 and set a goal to be off the energy
grid by 2007. When 2006 hit, he started
putting his plan into action and took
Durham College’s renewable energy
program with professor Phil Coulter.
“There’s a lot that people can do, but
I don’t think people are educated on
what they can do,” said Mr. Ekker.
Mr. Ekker and Mr. Coulter have
since become business partners in The
Green PowerHouse Corp. and Durham
College students helped install his re-
newable energy projects to gain hands-
on experience.
Although Mr. Ekker still moonlights
as a contractor, he thinks geothermal
will be the primary heating and cooling
source within five years. He recently
started working with builders to in-
corporate renewable energy into their
construction plans.
Going green in Durham
Fast facts
• Each of Mr. Ekker’s solar panels produces 170 watts a day
• Geothermal energy uses steam or hot water from the earth’s crust to create
energy
• The heating pump can heat water from 49 to 80 F in three minutes

Company keeping
pace with customers
By Keith Gilligan
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — Veridian isn’t just talk-
ing the talk, it’s walking the walk.
The company is going green, follow-
ing the same green advice it’s asking of
its customers.
“We wanted to show leadership
in the communities we serve,” says
George Armstrong, Veridian’s manager
of regulatory affairs and key projects.
“It’s a direction our board of directors
was interested in.
“It’s the right thing to do for our
customers and our company. It goes
hand-in-hand with the saving of en-
ergy. It’s something we’re interested in
promoting,” Mr. Armstrong notes.
“For a number of years, we’ve been
looking at ways to reduce our environ-
mental footprint.”
About 18 months ago, an employees’
group was formed to find ways of re-
ducing the company’s environmental
footprint.
“A couple of years ago, we put a real
emphasis on energy conservation. It’s
been going very well.”
Veridian commissioned a report by
Durham Sustain Ability, which showed
efforts over the past year have meant a
decrease in greenhouse gas emissions
of more than 164 tonnes.
That’s equal to a 10 per cent re-
duction in electricity consumption by
about 800 homes.
The company’s energy saving pro-
gram is an “on going” effort, Mr. Arm-
strong states.
“Our initial goal was to take up the
Energy Conservation Challenge from
Ontario’s Chief Energy Conservation
Officer,” he says, noting that goal was
a 10 per cent reduction in energy con-
sumption by the end of 2007.
“That’s a target we’re well on the way
to reaching. Once we do, we’ll work to
reduce it further,” Mr. Armstrong says.
Company employees are “very en-
thusiastic about energy conservation
and doing our part to green our com-
munities.”
One of the highest profile initiative is
the solar-powered car driven by Verid-
ian president and CEO Michael Ange-
meer. “It’s the first one in Canada.”
The car is powered up using a solar
and wind-power station at the Ajax of-
fice, Mr. Armstrong states.
The company has also installed solar
arrays at the Ajax and Pickering offices,
he notes.
Other initiatives include “energy
conservation measures, like more ef-
ficient lighting in our buildings,” he
says.
Veridian has made it a company phi-
losophy to be more environmentally
friendly, including buying hybrid ve-
hicles.
One of the bigger initiatives was re-
placing incandescent emergency lights
on 14 vehicles with high-efficiency LED
lights.
It eliminates the need for the ve-
hicles to idle while the lights are on.
More than 78,000 litres of fuel have
been saved, as well as about 100 tonnes
of carbon dioxide a year not being re-
leased into the atmosphere.

Residents protest
review process
By Izabela Jaroszynski
ijaroszynski@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — The integrity of a peer
review process is being called into
question by local residents who fear
an independent consultant’s report on
a potential energy-from-waste facil-
ity will be tampered with before being
released to the public.
“We have to question how inde-
pendent those reports will be,” said
Linda Gasser, who organized a protest
in front of the municipal building in
Bowmanville on Wednesday morning.
The residents’ concern rests on re-
ports from two consultants that were
meant to be discussed by Clarington
council last week, but did not appear
on the final agenda.
The reports are a review of the work
done so far in the Region of Durham’s
Environmental Assessment process on
a potential energy-from-waste (EFW)
facility. The review was commissioned
by Clarington when the municipality
found itself on a short list of potential
EFW host sites.
Clarington CAO Franklin Wu said
the reports were taken off the July 30
agenda because there were some con-
cerns expressed from the Region after a
draft copy was given to councillors for
preparatory reading.
“The report wasn’t included, didn’t
find its way onto the agenda, because
we received the call from the Region of
Durham on Tuesday (that) they were
requesting additional time be provided
for the Region’s consultant to talk to
our peer review consultant to clarify
several technical matters,” Mr. Wu said.
The final report will be presented at a
meeting on Sept. 4, he added.
Jim Richards, an organizer of the
event, said his concern is what will
happen to the report between now and
September if the Region is allowed to
give its input.
“It will end up being a revised re-
port,” he said. “That’s a real concern for
us. It begs the question: what are they
trying to hide?”
More than a dozen residents turned
up to the rally -- holding signs that
read ‘Say no to incineration’ -- to de-
mand that council make the peer re-
view public immediately and not at
the September meeting. But Mr. Wu
said the public shouldn’t be concerned
about the integrity of the process since
discussions between consultants and
peer reviewers are quite common in
these types of proceedings.
Cliff Curtis, the Region’s commis-
sioner of works, said there was nothing
untoward about the process.
“Basically it was becoming clear that
everyone was having trouble getting
their comments together, so we ex-
tended the deadline,” he said, referring
to a deadline set by the Region for
comment from Clarington council and
residents on the EA process.
Mr. Curtis said his staff had some
concerns that there were inaccuracies
with the peer review reports and it
was his understanding that the reports
needed more clarification.
“They are independent reports, but
there is ongoing consultation,” he said.
“They (Clarington) need access to the
people who did the reports.”
Councillor Gord Robinson, who
briefly attended the rally, said he had
shared some of the residents’ concerns
about the process but is now satisfied
that the review is transparent.
“Any changes made to the original
report will be highlighted and marked
as changes,” he said, adding that the
public will have access to both ver-
sions.

Security a
continuing
priority at OPG
F orce being set up for 2013
When the World Trade Centre’s Twin Towers came
crashing down, the world became a different, more
cautious place. No longer did we feel safe in our own
backyards because if terrorists could topple two of New York’s
tallest free standing structures, there’s no telling what they
could do here.
As a result, our borders have become better fortified on
both sides, airport security has been stepped up across the
country and closer to home new and improved security mea-
sures have been put in place at Ontario Power Generation’s
facilities.
Durham Regional Police forged a partnership with OPG
shortly after 9/11 and together they’ve improved security,
both internally and externally at our nuclear power stations.
Indeed, this partnership has allowed OPG to focus on other
security enhancements they would not normally have had
time to do if they had been left alone without DRPS. The re-
sult has been a new security building at Darlington and finely
tuned security measures including geometric identification.
Now, at the direction of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Com-
mission, OPG is set to put in place its own armed force. By
2013 its relationship with DRPS will conclude and it will go it
alone.
It’s still too early to say whether this will be a good thing as
there is not enough information yet being disclosed by OPG.
For example, no numbers have been released as to how large
the security force will be when it’s fully operational. As well,
the type of training, psychological and physical, the security
force will be put through is not known. Given DRPS will be
involved until the transition is complete gives us reason for
optimism. They are, after all, the best security force we have
in Durham Region.
We’re hopeful the OPG force that eventually takes over to
protect all of its operations is as good if not better than what
DRPS is now providing. After all if anything were to ever hap-
pen at any of OPG’s facilities its impact would be far reaching.
Security is our only line of defence.
Don’t spend tax dollars on private causes
To the editor:
Re: Aug. 1 editorial, Grants program was out of control.
Thank you for publishing an editorial which exposes just
how much our politicians take from us to buy themselves
votes. This kind of runaway government would not be a prob-
lem in the first place if we weren’t taxed to fund any special
interest programs, and instead left it up to private citizens to
donate money to the causes they feel are worth of their sup-
port. Bureaucrats who spend tax dollars on special causes
are not worthy of any merit. It’s the equivalent of a bartender
who passes out free liquor to customers. They expect some
great tips as a result from the parties who benefit, but in the
long run their employer will fire them.
Hopefully Ontario’s voters will decide to fire the Liberal
government this fall.

T here’s something ‘bout a lemon-
ade stand that stands for all that’s
good.
No truer sentiment could be ex-
pressed than this lyric from the Ron
Sexsmith song ‘Lemonade Stand’. And
no clearer representation of all that’s
good could be made than the tale of Ga-
briel Gilbert and his lemonade stand.
It began as a bitter story of big, bad
business standing in the way of a pure
and innocent attempt to make the
world a better place.
Six-year-old Gabriel Gilbert just
wanted to sell lemonade, not for prof-
it like most cardboard stores you see
along the street, but to raise money for
The Hospital for Sick Children.
His parents, brimming with pride,
fostered Gabriel’s altruism, supported
him, encouraged him and tried to assist
him in having the most successful little
lemonade stand in town.
Since they live on a crescent the Gil-
bert’s went to local businesses begging
them to let Gabriel set up shop in front
of a store to maximize traffic.
But, in a sad representation of the
corporate mentality that seems to have
taken precedence over community, the
businesses approached, even the Town
of Ajax, refused Gabriel because of is-
sues of liability and insurance.
After all someone might get a squirt
of lemon in the eye and sue.
In a last ditch effort the Gilberts told
their story to Metroland and the re-
sponse was heart warming – nearly a
dozen businesses, from Bowmanville to
Toronto, called offering Gabriel a spot
in front of their stores and residents
called offering donations.
Last weekend Gabriel set up his Sunk-
ist stand at the PartSource in Pickering
on Friday and the Road Legends Cruises
at Canadian Tire in Ajax on Saturday.
After squeezing 160 lemons Gabriel
was able to raise $426, which he will
hand over to The Hospital for Sick Chil-
dren.
The response from the community
and caring business people turned this
bitter story sweet. I can’t say it better
than Gabriel’s mother who wrote in
an e-mail, “Thank you for running the
story and helping a little boy keep his
faith in humanity. What a touching ex-
perience it has been.”
The situation had the potential to
sour one young soul on the power he
holds to make a difference, to incite
change. But instead, because of the
people who choose to hold philanthro-
py and community above issues of li-
ability and insurance, young Gabriel
has leaned how wonderful it feels to
work hard and pour your heart into a
good cause.
He has learned his community sup-
ports him and with every dollar he
made he learned he can make the world
a better place.

Slow down! Take a deep breath! Accept things
as they are!
These common suggestions for dealing with
stress and discomfort may seem simple, but fol-
lowing through on them is often harder than it
sounds. Sometimes it takes training to learn to “let
go” of stress or pain. But can we train the mind to
heal the body?
Mindfulness meditation has been championed
for centuries in religious practices such as Bud-
dhism, as a practice that seeks to free the mind
of the faithful from the constraints of stress, worry,
and self. Only in the past few decades has it been
studied as a potential adjuvant medical treat-
ment. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
is a program designed and implemented by Jon
Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., founder of the Center for Mind-
fulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society of
the University of Massachusetts Medical School. A
molecular biologist, Kabat-Zinn studied Buddhist
meditation and incorporated its key principles
into a course harnessing the link between mind
and body. Since that time, the fi eld has expand-
ed to encompass over 240 programs across the
U.S and Canada.
Results of various clinical studies using Mind-
fulness Meditation have lead researchers to hy-
pothesize that our body’s response to both posi-
tive and negative life situations is plastic, and can
change and improve through training. Perhaps,
MBSR offers the key to tapping this unforeseen
potential to deal with a variety of stressors, emo-
tional, physical, and spiritual. As more research is
done in this area, we will continue to learn more
about the untapped possibilities of the mind in
creating both a mental and physical shift towards
total health and wellness.
Mindfulness means paying attention, on pur-
pose, to what is happening in the moment with-
out getting lost in thoughts about the past or wor-
ries about the future. Mindfulness helps people
manage stress, chronic illness, pain, depression,
and anxiety by teaching them to recognize and
accept their thoughts, feelings and bodily sensa-
tions, all of which are connected. You learn to re-
spond to life consciously instead of reacting to it
unconsciously.
The MBSR program utilizes techniques such as
meditation, body awareness scan and gentle
stretching (adapted for those with physical limi-
tations). Participants learn how to cope with their
health and fi nd peace of mind by working with
the very stresses and pains that are the source of
their discomfort. Daily homework with CD’s and
workbook support practice between sessions.
While MBSR techniques are not curative for dis-
eases or stressful conditions, they guide partici-
pants in learning how to relate to the condition
rather than fi ghting it or wishing it away.
Anne Dranitsaris. Ph.D. is a clinical psychother-
apist in private practice at the Centre for Mind-
ful Therapies in the Pickering Village in Ajax. She
works with individuals, couples and groups using
Mindfulness-based approaches for treatment of
stress-related problems, depression, anxiety, and
relationship issues. For more information about

Asthma: a precursor to chronic pulmonary dis-
ease?
According to the World Health Organization
(WHO), asthma is now a health problem of sig-
nifi cant global concern, affecting over 100 million
people worldwide. Statistics Canada reports 8.4
per cent of the population age 12 or older have
been diagnosed with asthma (2000-2001), with
this disease affecting at least 12 per cent of Ca-
nadian children. According to the Canadian Lung
Association, every year in Canada, approximately
146,000 emergency room visits are related to asth-
ma attacks.
Asthma sufferers experience diffi culty moving air
into and out of their lungs. Narrowed airways be-
come irritated, which leads to coughing. The mus-
cles around the airways become tight and spasm,
leading to an onset of symptoms which includes
shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing and
wheezing. The symptoms of asthma and the de-
gree to which they are experienced will vary from
person to person. A small subset of individuals with
asthma may develop permanent lung damage
as they grow older or develop chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD).
The Homeopathic treatment of Asthma
In studying the individualizing asthmatic symptoms
and precipitating factors experienced by the pa-
tient, the homeopathic physician further investi-
gates the patient’s medical history, family history,
physical and psychological characteristics and
history of disease suppression. This helps to identify
the true, underlying cause of the problem. Armed
with this information, a homeopathic remedy can
then be administered which best matches the
symptom expression and characteristics of the
patient. The ultimate goal of homeopathic treat-
ment is to slowly and gently remove the symptoms,
progressively leading to an improvement in the
patient’s quality of life.
What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine
which uses medicines referred to as “remedies”
made from plants, minerals and other substances,
taken in very small quantities for a short period of
time. Their effect however is deep and long last-
ing. Homeopathic medicines are safe, non-addic-
tive and act to stimulate the body’s own natural
healing ability. Rather than acting to block natural
processes, homeopathic medicines provide the
information needed by the body to sort out the
problem in an appropriate manner, thereby ac-
celerating the healing process.

whose main scope of practice is the homeopath-
ic treatment of symptoms associated with chronic

Plan to prevent
Cancer
and heart disease as well as many other
diseases by raising your immune system.
Dr. John Bailar M.D. PhD. former editor-
in-chief of the Journal of the National
Cancer Institute states: “For diseases to
start and continue growing, they must
out-maneuver the many long arms of our
immune defenses. The immune system
is both your first and last defense against
cancer.”
Pollutants, viruses, carcinogens and germs
in our daily food, water and air have to be eliminated daily by
a strong immune system or we will get sick. A fully active
immune system helps to prevent deterioration of energy, mus-
cular strength, bone loss and brain damage. Dr. Ron Kennedy
M.D., Immune Specialist, writes we have pre-cancerous and
cancer cells in our body every day that need to be eradicated
by our immune system.
Over 400 medical studies were done and are on
record establishing that the medicinal mushroom extract of
Coriolus Versicolor is the best immune booster available. It’s
natural and safe with virtually no side effects. Many medical
experts confirm this on the internet. It’s helping to restore the
immune system for men and women going through serious
health challenges like ongoing stress, trauma, all surgeries,
pneumonia, cancer surgery, chemotherapy or radiation, which
all to a great extent destroy the immune system at a time
when it is needed most.
A CBC TV-Documentary said that far more lives
could be saved by preventing a disease than later treating
people after they get sick, especially cancer. Unfortunately,
this is what many people do. The narrator Wendy Mesley,
who went through cancer treatment herself, emphasized that
virtually nothing is done for prevention. There are so many
health discoveries that are not getting through to the public
nor to the health professional escept for synthetic drugs.
People have to initiate change by educating themselves and
requesting details from stores or public information on the
internet.

money for this natural product to support their medical doc-
tors to raise the immune system while going through cancer
treatment. The Lancet Medical Journal published a study in
1994 saying that clinical research has consistently demon-
strated the ability of Coriolus Versicolor to double and triple
survival rates for people going through surgery, chemo and
radiation by strengthening their immune system. On our web
site find endorsements, opinions and research data to backup
the success rate by world-renowned medical experts. Coriolus
Versicolor may increase within 30 days macrophage white
blood cells, natural killer cells, Tand B cells count by as much
as 300 per cent. Should be taken on an ongoing basis as a pre-
ventive as it represents a small expense compared to an illness
costing huge amount of money and suffering. Prevention
could also reduce waiting times for treatments of sick people.

DURHAM — Longhorn Custom Body Art is
abuzz with the sounds of tattoo needles after
re-opening its doors on Aug. 9.
The Region of Durham’s health department
closed the parlour, located at 12 Centre St. in
Oshawa, on Aug. 1 after launching an inves-
tigation into potential exposure to non-sterile
equipment. It re-opened after passing a num-
ber of tests on the previously malfunction-
ing sterilizing equipment that had forced the
closer.
“It’s slower than usual, but there are cus-
tomers coming in,” said Hugh Towie, owner of
Longhorn, which has been in operation for the
past 16 years.
He explained the machine that caused the
closure had three failed spore tests in the past
10 months and it has since been refurbished.
Mr. Towie has been ordered to test the steril-
izing equipment everyday for the next six days
and send the results to the health depart-
ment.
Using the waiver forms clients filled out and
provided by Mr. Towie, the Region is working
to send letters to the between 1,500 and 2,000
who could have been affected.
Although the health department does deem
the risk low, it’s encouraging people who re-
ceived services at Longhorn between Nov.
17, 2006 and Aug. 1, 2007, to call the health
department and visit their family doctor or
an urgent-care clinic. The use of non-sterile
equipment could lead to transmission of dis-
eases like hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.
“I am concerned for the public safety and
yeah, I encourage them to get tested,” Mr.
Towie said. “But, it is deemed low risk and
anyone that knows about sterilization knows
that our piercing needles and tattoo needles
are single use.”
It’s the tattoo tubes and piercing tools, he
went on to explain, that are sterilized and that
is done with great care.
“Before they even get to the (sterilizing
equipment) they have to be scrubbed and
washed and put into an ultrasonic machine
for 15 minutes,” Mr. Towie said.
Although Mr. Towie said he takes great care
in the cleanliness of his shop, he said not all
are so careful.
“I am confident in my equipment... I wish
all of these little fly-by-night shops were all so
clean,” Mr. Towie said. “(The health depart-
ment) is in these places once a year and I think
they should be in once a month.”
The Region’s manager of environmental
health agrees that this is a perfect example of
why tattoo and body art establishments need
to be better regulated.
It’s ever increasing in its popularity, tat-
toos and body piecing, but according to Ross
MacEachern, as the art form and the number
of establishments that offer it grows, regula-
tions governing them hasn’t kept pace.
There are guidelines to deal with the tattoo
and body piercing industry, but it is largely a
self-regulated business.
This situation, Mr. MacEachern said, high-
lights a major gap in the current protocol the
Ministry of Health and Long Term Care has.
The fact that beauty and body art establish-
ments are not regulated is a definite problem.
“Food establishments have regulations,
pools have regulations, but these places, that
can lead to blood-borne illnesses, don’t,” Mr,
MacEachern said. “It may be time to look at
regulating them like we do restaurants.”
The current protocol is from 1998 and Mr.
MacEachern said it needs to be updated. Part
of that protocol indicates tattoo parlours need
to test sterilizing equipment on a monthly
basis, but they don’t have to send those results
to anyone. And if they fail there is no obliga-
tion to report that failure.
David Jenson, a communications represen-
tative with the Ontario Ministry of Health and
Long Term Care confirmed that the industry
is largely self regulated. He explained that tat-
too parlours fall under the Personal Services
Setting Protocol. Any establishment, from hair
dressers to piecing parlours, fall under this
protocol which lays out minimum inspection
controls. He said it calls for annual visits by
local health boards to ensure appropriate in-
spection control measures are in place.

DURHAM — Four bikers charged with the
brutal murder of a man whose remains were
found in rural Pickering appeared briefly in
court Friday and were remanded in custody as
they await trial.
Cameron Acorn, Pierre Aragon, Randolph
Brown and Robert Quinn, all identified by
Durham police as having connections to the
Bandidos outlaw biker gang, are charged with
second-degree murder in the death of Shawn
Douse.
The 35-year-old Keswick man’s battered
and burned remains were found in a field on
Concession 7 in rural Pickering in December
of 2005.
Durham homicide cops have said Mr. Douse
was killed elsewhere and his body dumped
in Pickering, just across the York-Durham
boundary.
In the weeks leading up to the arrests in
June of 2006, investigators searched the Kes-
wick home of Jamie Flanz, a Bandidos mem-
ber killed in the much-publicized slaughter
of eight gang members near St. Thomas in the
spring of 2006.
Police say Mr. Douse’s murder is not con-
nected to the gang killings.
After their brief appearance in court in
Whitby Friday Superior Court Justice Edwin
Minden ordered all four men remanded in
custody.
One of the defendants, Mr. Quinn, told the
judge he had just fired his lawyer and was
making efforts to retain new counsel.
The four accused men are scheduled to
make another brief court appearance in late
August, to confirm dates for pretrial proceed-
ings scheduled for the fall.

Pickering Cougars win
prestigious USA Cup
Team plays in
two tournaments
in Minnesota
PICKERING — The Pickering
Cougars boys’ under-13 regional
premier soccer team came within
a whisker of going 2-for-2 at a pres-
tigious U.S. soccer tournament re-
cently.
The Cougars represented Canada
and Pickering at the USA Cup tour-
nament in Blaine, Minnesota that
played host to 1,006 teams, includ-
ing ones from Mexico, Brazil, Japan,
Northern Ireland and Canada.
The event was unique as it al-
lowed teams to play in both its
‘weekend’ and ‘weekday’ tourna-
ments. The Cougars played in both
while in Minnesota.
The Pickering under-13s domi-
nated the ‘weekend’ tournament,
winning the title while outscoring
their opponents 29-1.
In the final, the Cougars faced
Jogo Bonito from Connecticut,
scoring an impressive 4-0 shutout
victory.
Pickering faced Northern Lights
United from Manitoba in the semi-
finals. Manitoba proved to be a
tough team, but the Cougars rose to
the challenge en route to a 2-0 win.
Early goals set the tone for Pick-
ering’s decisive 7-1 victory over
Minnesota’s New Hope Wings in
the quarter-final contest. It was the
only game where the Cougars sur-
rendered a goal.
In the preliminary round,
Pickering won all of its games by
big scores. They beat Stevens Point
from Wisconsin 4-0, dominated
Hopkins Dynamo Walleyes from
Minnesota 6-0 and then trounced
Elm Grove Fire from Wisconsin by
the same 6-0 score.
After a one-day break, the Cou-
gars embarked on adding a second
title in Minnesota at the ‘weekday’
tournament. Pickering advanced to
the Schwann’s USA Cup champion-
ship against a strong Mexican Cruz
Azui squad.
In a rough, physical final, the
Mexicans broke out on top 3-
1 at half-time. After an inspiring
half-time speech by the Pickering
coaches, the Cougars took the field
with a renewed focus and immedi-
ately cut the deficit to one goal with
25 minutes to play. Despite having
scoring chances, the Cougars fell
short 3-2.
Pickering scored a close 1-0 win
over Bangu Tsunami Blue from
Minnesota in the semifinals. In one
of the Cougars’ best games in terms
of ball control, Pickering took the
ball to the net, but couldn’t finish
on their chances. With five minutes
to play, the Cougars finally broke
through for the only goal of the
game to put them into the final.
The Cougars faced the Manitoba
Northern Lights again in the quar-
ter-final match. This was a unique
experience as the game was played
at the Blaine stadium facility and
could be watched at home via the
Internet. The playoff contest was
tied 1-1 at the end of regulation
time. The Cougars pressed in over-
time and were rewarded with the
winning goal in a 2-1 victory.
A weary Pickering under-13s
started ‘weekday’ play with a 3-1
loss to Clintonville, Northern Ire-
land. After regrouping in their hotel
room, the Cougars returned in the
afternoon to obliterate Woodbury
Arsenal 10-0.
The Cougars faced Metro FC
Rapids Premier from Ohio in Game
3, earning a 3-0 shutout.
Pickering needed to win its final
round-robin game against Galaxy
Blue from Illinois to finish first in its
division. With the game tied 2-2 late
in the contest, Pickering scored for
a 3-2 victory and first place in the
division, thus earning a bye into the
quarter-final.
The Cougars currently hold down
second place in the Central Soccer
League’s under-13 regional premier
division.
Team members are Fraser Aird,
Keishon Alcindor, Caylan Amburs-
ley, Matthew Angelevski, Nicholas
Axhorn, Peter Boylan, Ryan Boylan,
Myles Campbell, Bruce Cullen,
Chris Funke, Jalen Griffiths, Justin
Haywood, Daniel Massa, Raphael
Reynolds, Shane Satar, Sean Smith
and Rafiq Suleman.
Mike Reynolds coaches the team,
assisted by Kevin Forde and man-
ager Steve Boylan.

Courtice
firefighter was
born to run
By Jillian Follert
jfollert@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — Mike Coll
is no stranger to running
marathons -- but running
13 back-to-back is definitely
new territory.
This month, the 27-year-
old is running from Sud-
bury to Toronto -- about
600 km or 13 standard 42-
km marathons -- to raise
money for the Hospital for
Sick Children.
Mr. Coll, a Courtice
resident and an industrial
firefighter at Oshawa’s GM
plant, says he’s wanted to
do something to support
sick kids, ever since the hos-
pital helped one of his close
friends.
“About nine years ago I
was in a serious car acci-
dent with one of my friends
and she was taken to sick
Kids,” he recalls.
“She was there for weeks
and I was there with her
the whole time... I saw the
amazing work they do
and now I want to give
back and help them.”
Mr. Coll set out from Sud-
bury on Monday and hopes
to finish his journey on Aug.
16 at the doors of the Hos-
pital for Sick Children in To-
ronto.
He hopes to raise be-
tween $8,000 and $10,000,
which he will present to the
hospital when he arrives
next week.
While he is used to run-
ning in urban events like
the Montreal Half Marathon
and Run for the Cure, he
wasn’t quite prepared for
the surprises that running
in rural areas would bring.
This run has taken him
through the rural areas
along Hwy. 17 and Hwy. 11,
and before the first day was
over he came face to face
with a black bear -- luckily
it lumbered off without in-
cident.
“I’ve run marathons be-
fore, but doing something
like this on my own is re-
ally different,” Mr. Coll said
when he stopped to catch
his breath on Tuesday.
“It’s hard, but it’s worth it
to take something I’m good
at and use it to help others.”
To make himself more
visible, Mr. Coll has spray
painted his running shoes
yellow and tossed a couple
extra pairs in the back win-
dow of the car collecting do-
nations behind him.
As well as inviting dona-
tions, Mr. Coll is inviting the
public to run alongside him,
even if just for a kilometre
or two -- he’ll slow down to
match the pace of any run-
ning mates who join in.

for Sick Kids and track his
journey, visit www.mikes-
runforsickkids.com.
