And that knowledge is useful when it comes to deploying officers on the 250 km of highways Ontario Provincial Po- lice officers working out of the Whitby detachment are responsible for, said Administrative Sergeant Steve Dimi- nie. “It’s a huge help,” Sgt. Diminie said of a recent analysis of five years of collision data undertaken by the OPP. The study identified the stretch of Hwy. 401 extending from Whites Road in Pickering east to Courtice Road as an area in which motorists are most likely to be involved in an accident. “That represents in the neighbour- hood of 60 per cent of all our colli- sions,” Sgt. Diminie said. “And 60 per cent in that 32-km stretch is quite alarming.” Speed, traffic volume, aggressive motorists and drunk driving are all factors that contribute to the highway’s hazards, he said, adding that increased patrols and a focus on stressing safe driving are essential to promoting highway safety. Visibility -- cops in cruisers and op- erating radar units by roadsides -- is paramount, Sgt. Diminie said. “Visibility is probably one of the most important elements of a suc- cessful campaign to reduce these col- lisions,” he said. “It puts it in people’s minds that the police are out there.” Highway safety is one of the priorities identified by recently appointed OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino. And Sgt. Diminie said there’s an increasing de- mand from ordinary citizens for safety and sanity on the province’s roads. “They’re counting on the police,” he said. “Now that we’ve identified that area, we’ll try to put our resources out there.” Body had ‘obvious signs of abuse’ Police continue to investigate suspicious death in Ajax AJAX — Durham homicide detec- tives are probing the suspicious death of a man found in a north Ajax home Monday afternoon. The body of 33-year-old Karl Oreggio was found inside a residence with ob- vious signs of trauma. Police have not released a suspected cause of death. Police were called to the home on Tresher Court in the area of Westney and Rossland roads around 12:30 p.m. The house at 12 Tresher was taped off on Tuesday, with a cruiser parked in front of the house and one at the rear, in the yard of Lester B. June 28: The Brock Road on-ramp is closed for about five hours after a truck rolled over. Traffic was at a crawl for hours through the area as drivers slowed to watch the clean-up. The driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The trailer flipped on its side spilling its contents all over the highway. U.S. man pleads guilty in alcohol-related crash that killed three Pickering family members on Christmas vacation By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — A Pennsylvania man accused of driving drunk in the wrong direction, killing three members of a Pickering family, pleaded guilty to ve- hicular homicide on Monday. Jeremy Grimes, 24, of Bedford, will re- ceive a minimum of eight years in prison as part of a plea agreement when he’s sentenced on Oct. 11, authorities said. He pleaded guilty to two counts of homi- cide by vehicle while driving under the influence and one count each of vehicu- lar homicide and drunken driving. Police say the charges represent the first time in Ontario that crimi- nal charges have been laid in this type of offence. Dubbed Project Orbit, the inves- tigation stemmed from an earlier arrest in Port Perry where a man and woman were charged with providing access to illegal satellite television signals. That investigation identified sev- eral businesses in the region in which satellite systems were sold and encryption codes provided to illegally access television and audio channels, police said. Undercover officers attended two businesses -- UNEEK Electronics in Oshawa and Challenge FTA in Ajax -- to purchase satellite equipment and gain access to encryption codes used to obtain satellite signals for free. Subsequently, police seized $60,000 in satellite receivers, dishes, and computer equipment from the Oshawa store and another $20,000 in equipment from the Ajax store. Police say that the estimated rev- enue loss for agencies such as DISH and Bell ExpressVu Networks is $290,000 annually from the equip- ment seized. Fernando Pedra, 45, and William Hutcheon and John DeSouza, both 32, are charged with theft of tele- communications, possession device that can steal telecommunications and sell device to steal telecommu- nications. A court order was obtained to shut down web sites connected with these businesses that provided users with encryption codes. Police say that while the posses- sion of “free to air” satellite equip- ment is not illegal, modifying the equipment to access subscription signals is. Police say they may conduct fur- ther investigations if specific infor- mation about end users comes to light. Anyone with information regard- ing this investigation is asked to call 1-888-579-1520 ext. 2674. Anony- mous tips can be made to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800- 222-TIPS. The two other family members in the van, An- gela St-Denis, and her daughter, Therese, were treated at local hospitals for minor injuries. Mr. Grimes’s lawyer, Tony Zanoni, said his client had been drinking at a Bedford bar and cannot remember how he ended up driving in the wrong direction, or the crash. He said three days later, Mr. Grimes woke up on his mother’s couch and she told him what happened. “He acknowledges with much regret that he devastated a family,” Mr. Zano- ni said. “He was just a kid who made a wrong choice that so many people make.” In a previous interview with the News Advertiser, Ms. St-Denis said her past volunteer work with the victim crisis assistance referral services with the Dur- ham Regional Police Service has helped her cope. “We’ve been in this situation so many times when we’ve sat with peo- ple and we listened to them talk about their family,” Ms. St-Denis said. “This is not new to us; this is what we’ve been through with other people.” Relatives of the victims were satisfied with the deal, District Attorney William Higgins said. Shortly after the tragedy, Ms. St-Denis said there is no point in staying angry with Mr. Grimes. “All I want now is that he never get behind the wheel of a car again.” -- With files from the Torstar Network yard. Officers with the forensic unit were also going to sift through a dump- ster on the school property. Janitors from the school were outside unlock- ing a dumpster and a fenced garbage bin Tuesday morning. There was a black car parked in the driveway and another car, without licence plates, parked in the garage. There was also a child’s bike in the garage and toys in the backyard, but neighbours say they never saw chil- dren at the house. Arthur Walsh lived across the street from the house. “I only met the guy once,” Mr. Walsh said, noting they spoke about car parts. “I never saw children there,” he added. Mr. Walsh has lived on Tresher for about five years and “the first time I noticed him was a couple weeks ago. The place was always up for sale here and there.” Neighbours seemed to think the people living in the house rented it. A man living next door said, “There were a few guys who live there. I didn’t know which one he was.” He also never saw children from the house outdoors. Anyone with information on the in- cident is asked to call police at 905- 579-1520, ext. 5319, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Mr. Albrecht was a last-minute substitution at a recent breakfast meeting of the Ajax Rotary Club. Mr. Day, the minister of public safety, was called back to Ottawa last Thursday, in time to announce the new commissioner of the RCMP on Friday. Mr. Albrecht gave the same speech Mr. Day was to deliver, a speech heavy on the Conservative government’s accomplishments, such as tax cuts, get-tough-on crime legislation and work to improve the environment. “We have a proven record of get- ting the job done. We always put working families first. We’re mov- ing forward. People always complain about what the government is doing or isn’t doing. By listening to your concerns and taking action it’s an important part of being in govern- ment,” Mr. Albrecht stated. “The family is important, our chil- dren should be protected, our veter- ans respected, hard work and enter- prise should be rewarded,” he listed as issues important to the govern- ment. “With the minority government in Ottawa, we could be fighting an elec- tion any time,” he noted. “When the time comes, Canadians will face an important question. Which leader, which team has the experience to build a strong Canada. Ste- ven Harper is a strong leader. “What you’ve done and where you’re going are more impor- tant than where you’re from and who you know,” Mr. Albrecht said. He pointed to the federal account- ability act, “the toughest anti-cor- ruption act in Canadian history.” In the first two budgets of the gov- ernment, there were 60 different tax cuts, he noted, including cutting the GST by one per cent to six per cent. “All of you work hard for the money you spend and you send far too much to Ottawa,” he added. “We’ve deliv- ered $38 billion in tax relief. “We’ve restored the fiscal balance with the provinces. It will allow them to do the work they do, improving schools, improving their road sys- tems, improving the health system right here in Ajax,” Mr. Albrecht stat- ed. The government is also paying down the debt, having put $22 billion towards it in the past two budgets. It’s also implemented fixed elec- tion dates. “No longer can the Prime Minister walk into the Governor General’s office and say ‘I want an election. I’m high in the polls and I want an election.’” Health care improvements include decreased patient wait times, he said. “We’ve signed a guarantee with every province and territory.” He also spoke about the govern- ment’s actions to improve the envi- ronment, noting, “Canadians want action on the environment. We’re tackling greenhouse gases and pollu- tion.” The Kyoto Accord “doesn’t address pollution. It only addresses green- house gases. We need more than press releases, we need action,” he said. “We’re tackling crime to make our streets safe,” he stated, adding 1,000 more RCMP officers are being hired. There’s new laws to protect youth from sexual predators and legisla- tion imposing mandatory sentences when a gun is used while committing a crime. “We got rid of house arrest for dan- gerous criminals,” he said. Rotarians hear Tories have ‘record of getting job done’ Harold Albrecht submitted photo Freddy and me Pickering’s Marissa Efthimiades was selected in a Canada-wide draw to be a captain escort at the quarter-final match between the United States and Austria in the Under-20 World Cup. Some plants were salvaged, many were wasted. The van- dals took their time and must have made quite a racket. Ap- parently nobody saw anything or called police. This was prob- ably not done by thugs passing through the City. It was likely drunken, frustrated behaviour. It is truly pathetic to take out one’s personal failings on a public park meant for all to enjoy. It’s just disappointing. A waste of money, energy, and time, yours, the City’s, and mine. I spoke to fellow patrons of the beach on Tuesday morn- ing; all of them mentioned the value videocameras would have had in catching the cul- prits in the act, or as a de- terrent. All felt they would be worth it, and I agree. In the promotional literature Pickering offers about its parks, the waterfront is noted as the jewel in the City’s crown. Per- haps Ontario Power Genera- tion, which owns most of the beach anyway, and has a pa- trol unit which drives through occasionally in the day, could patrol nightly and regularly. Maybe the police could, even once a night, walk through the park. As it stands, a cruiser oc- casionally drives to the bottom of Liverpool, pulls through the parking lot, and leaves. Woe- fully inadequate for protect- ing the area. People are get- ting tired of seeing bullet holes through signs and hate graf- fiti in neighbouring Robertson Park too, in addition to vandal- ism at the waterfront. Frankly, so am I. Dave Taylor Pickering Kinsmen Park Canada Day festivities a ‘debacle’ says reader To the editor: Debacle is to say the least. We decided to attend just as we have for the last eight years. With rolls of quarters we ar- rived at the Pickering GO sta- tion. The “shuttle” turned out to be ONE bus. He picked up every 45 minutes! Used to be every 10 to 15 minutes. My better half has Osteoar- thritis in both knees and L1 to L4 are extremely degenerated. She walks with a cane and not far. We have a legitimate hand- icap sticker for the car. Stand- ing was practically intolerable. After going through empty parking lots to see if anyone was there we got to Kinsmen Park. I thought the wait was bad? The bus let us out as far away from the festivities site as possible. Right down by the plant gate! If it was a metre it was 500 metres. We took our time and made it, only to be completely disappointed by what was missing. Two main- stays for seniors, the Lion’s Club quarter/card Bingo and the beer garden, were both missing. Only one place for food, the patty place doesn’t count. We were upset, wondered who else found the day’s festiv- ities to be lacking? We turned around and walked through two parking lots that the bus could have turned around in, and caught the bus on his next time by. It looks like our 45-minute festivity was mostly unneces- sary walking and severe disap- pointment. We got the feeling the bud- get was directed to the evening schedule. IN THE COMMUNITY We are men doing a crappy job /4& Grunt work’s great for male bonding I spent the better part of the weekend with my two sons and several former pals, stripping and re-shingling my roof. I am now convinced the reason they make shingles with a 25-year warranty has noth- ing to do with protecting your home from the elements and everything to do with the fact that if you had to do this job more than once every 25 years, it would surely kill you. I have done some lousy, dirty, physically demanding jobs in my time. I have dug plenty of holes, scraped a lot of paint, moved a lot of heavy objects. I have spent more than 20 minutes with Harvey Kei- tel. But this weekend took the cake for sheer backbreaking, soul-crushing, grunt work. The job would’ve finished me had I attempted to do it by myself. Luckily I am blessed with some very kind, generous and appar- ently stupid friends. Your kids have to help you, of course. That’s what you sign on for when you’re born into a family. You’re like an indentured servant who gets birthday presents. Still, lots of kids will help but they’ll let you know, with every hammer stroke, how little fun they’re having. Mine didn’t. They were troopers. In fact, at one point when the sun was giving the roof a lovely POW camp cozi- ness, one of my eldest son’s friends dropped in and decided to help out. The lad actually volunteered to come on up and join the rest of us in passing out. As long as I live I will never again bad-mouth a teenager. This kid was a gem. But they were all gems, every man-jack of them on that stink- ing-hot, salt flat above my ga- rage and family room. And the hotter it got, the tougher the slugging, the more our backs and shoulders turned to iron, the more clearly I saw the gold in each of them. There is something wonder- ful that occurs when people come together to tackle some- thing unpleasant. There’s a bond created through com- munal pain and belly-aching. I don’t know if it’s a uniquely male thing. I doubt it. But un- questionably, men have their own special version of it. Lan- guage arts come into play. My children’s vocabulary grew by volumes over those two days as they heard some of the most creative cursing ever uttered. There was, as there always is whenever two or more men are together for more than 30 seconds, a great deal of sexual storytelling. And no one both- ers to edit for the children’s sake. If the children are work- ing and sweating alongside the adults, they are no longer sepa- rate. The great levelling force of the crappy job comes into play and all are made equals. Once again, my children received an education no amount of pri- vate school could’ve provided. As odd as all this sounds, there is actually a great deal of profundity in it. I knew we’d done more than just re-roofed the house when my 12-year-old sat in the kitchen with me late in the evening of the first day, he beaming happily, I catatonic with ache, and said “That was a really great day Dad. I had fun.” This was true. It had been a great day. He had been witness to and partaken of men coming together to help each other for no other reason than that they are friends. Some people never get there. Durham resident Neil Crone, actor-comic-writer, saves some of his best lines for his columns. Follow Neil’s BLOG drinfo.ca/croneblog.html.. Neil Crone enter laughing 407 need highlighted by 401 safety report Too much stress placed on highway built for lighter traffic I t won’t come as much of a surprise to those of us who use it every day that the portion of the 401 that stretches through the heart of Durham Region is the most dangerous place to drive in the prov- ince. The 32-kilometre stretch of the 401 which runs from Whites Road in Pickering to Courtice Road in Clarington was built for far fewer cars and trucks than actually travel the roadway each day. According to the Ontario Provincial Police there were 965 collisions on the stretch of road in 2006 alone. If there was ever an argument for the 407 extension from Brock Road in Pickering to Hwy. 35/115 in Clarington, this is it. Consider the frustration felt by motorists who must suffer through the daily 6-9 a.m. westward commute and then face the grueling drive eastward from 2-7 p.m. There just aren’t enough 401 lanes to avoid continuous bottlenecks east of Toronto. And, the bad news is, it’s only going to get worse. The 2006 census revealed what we all can see and feel: Durham Region is growing at a pace far faster than almost anywhere else in Canada. While growth to the north and west of Toronto is also com- monplace, so are the highways and biways needed to move traffic to and from the big city. There are dozens of 400 series lanes heading north and west while there are just a handful going east from To- ronto. It’s a shame the 407 extension didn’t proceed in a timely fashion a decade ago when it was clear, already, that growth would outstrip the 401’s ability to meet transportation needs in Durham and points east. But the 407 extension is still years away, so the issue for 401 safety is, what now? It appears OPP commissioner Julian Fantino, armed with the infor- mation about traffic safety, will meet monthly with OPP supervisors to discuss highway safety traffic plans and that means, based on current information, the OPP will make the Durham stretch of the 401 its top priority. We trust that means beefed-up traffic enforcement and a sin- cere desire on the part of the OPP to provide the resources needed to improve safety on the Durham section of the 401. It also reinforces the need to widen the 401 at least to Oshawa to reduce the stress that builds up during rush hour and on summer weekends as cottagers head east of Toronto. Governments have been talking about this for years, but it’s time during this provincial election that leaders make promises that are kept with regard to the 401 and 407. When Dwight Budgell of Courtice saw he was to make his cheque pay- able to Rainbow High Vacations for an O’Neill Collegiate Vocational Institute trip to Europe, he decided to check out the company. “I clicked on (the website); it’s the world’s largest gay and lesbian travel company,” said Mr. Budgell. He said he’s since made various calls inquiring about Rainbow High Vaca- tions’ involvement with the trip and re- ceived some different answers, prompt- ing him to completely remove his son from the school rather than just the trip. He was also concerned his son, who attends O’Neill for its regional arts program, would be “blackballed” by the school because he made an issue. Lou Vavougios, the Durham District School Board’s Oshawa superintendent, said Mr. Budgell’s complaint is the first of its kind he’s received. The board used an educational tours division that books everything and trav- els with the students, said Mr. Vavou- gios. “Other than the ticket, there’s no other transaction with Rainbow High (Vacations),” Mr. Vavougios said. His understanding is the company is not on or part of the trip in any other way. He added it’s no different than going to a travel agent, booking a flight, and receiving a ticket. “It really doesn’t make a difference where you get your ticket from,” he said – it’s just a seat on a plane. Mr. Vavougios said the education tours company may use several differ- ent operators in arranging a trip. “We don’t discriminate as to what agencies they are or what they do,” said Mr. Vavougios. Mr. Budgell said he has no problem with gay or lesbian people, but he doesn’t support the “propagan- da” of gay and lesbian trips. He added he wouldn’t have a problem supporting a travel agency that was more diversi- fied or if a gay person was a rep on the trip. “What they want to do with their own personal lifestyle, I don’t have a problem with it,” said Mr. Budgell. But the Courtice man who attends an Ajax/Pickering church is worried about the message it would send to his son that it’s an OK lifestyle when he doesn’t think it is. The company may just be handling the trip, but, “I’m handing them the cheque,” he said. “If it was a company supporting ter- rorism I wouldn’t write a cheque to them either,” said Mr. Budgell. The school is also suggesting there’s nothing wrong with the lifestyle by using the company, he said, and asked why not use a local agency or one dedicated to school trips instead of one that’s all about gays when you click on its web- site. He added his son agrees with his decision. The Mohawk Stars and the Wel- lington Aces found that out the hard way on the weekend, as the Rock used strong collective efforts to score important wins over both teams in OLA senior ‘B’ lacrosse first-round playoff action on the weekend. The Rock wrapped up round-robin playoff series with a thrilling 4-3 over- time victory over the defending Pres- idents Cup (Canadian) and league champion Wellington Aces in Fergus on Saturday night. The Rock win over the Aces was especially sweet as it effectively ended the Aces’ hopes of bouncing back in the round-robin playoff series. The Rock were beaten by the Aces in the league champion- ship series last year. Starting out at the Pickering Rec- reation Complex on Friday night, the Rock scored a decisive 7-3 win over the Mohawk Stars, which came into the contest undefeated with a 2-0 round-robin playoff mark. The upshot is the Rock booked their ticket to the league semifinal after the two weekend wins produced a 3-1 record and first place in Series ‘A’. The Rock will play either Mohawk or the Norwood Nitro in a best-of-five semifinal series, which is expected to begin on the weekend. After being held in relative check through the first two playoff games, Wayne Burke was definitely the ‘X’ factor last weekend. He started the weekend with a four-point game, including a hat trick Friday against Mohawk, and ended it by scoring the winning goal in over- time against Wellington Saturday. Burke downplayed his contribu- tions, noting that especially on Fri- day night, he could have scored even more goals. “It’s not been from lack of chanc- es,” says Burke. “I’ve been getting lots of good picks and lots of good chances, but they haven’t been going in. Tonight was my night. I had a lot more chanc- es that I could have scored on, but Kenny (Montour, Mohawk’s goalten- der) stood on his head.” Rock head coach Paul St. John praised his players for delivering a “complete effort”, especially on Fri- day night when the Rock staked itself to a 3-0 at the midway point of the first period and controlled the play for the most part, although Mohawk closed to within a goal early in the second period. Mostly, the Rock relied on stout defensive work, including outstand- ing goaltending from Steve ‘Chug- ger’ Dietrich, who made his first two starts of the season for the Rock on the weekend. If there was any rust from inactivity for the veteran ball stopper, it didn’t surface to any great degree Friday night. “Our defence allowed only eight shots in the second period and Chug- ger was able to see the ball,” explains St. John. “When he can see the ball, he can stop the ball.” While Burke, captain Jim Veltman and the veteran goaltending tandem of Dietrich and Mike Miron have sup- plied leadership in large doses, other players also stepped up their play in a major way over the weekend, notes St. John. He highlighted some noteworthy efforts after Friday’s win. “Wayne Burke had three goals and Jim got on the board with assists. But, I also thought Mark Craig, Chris Par- kin, Jordy West-Pratt all played well,” says St. John. “I also thought Bobby Debrone had a fabulous game. He got to a lot of loose balls. I was really happy with his effort.” Jaime Lumsden, Pavel Dosly, and Sean Felstead were the other Rock marksmen against Wellington. Jamie Plunkett, Dosly, Chris Parkin and Mike Daley had the other Rock goals against Mohawk. Craig also added a pair of assists. Curcio steps down as head coach of Panthers Joins OHL’s London Knights as an assistant; looks forward to working with ‘two of the best hockey guys around in Dale and Mark Hunter’ By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — For the second time in two years, a new coach will be behind the bench of the Pickering Panthers for the coming junior ‘A’ hockey season. The OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League team accepted the resignation of head coach Pat Curcio last Thursday. Curcio has signed on as an assistant coach with the Ontar- io Hockey League’s London Knights under head coach Dale Hunter. He’ll be joined on the bench by fellow as- sistant Dave Gagne. While Curcio, 33, says he’s sorry to leave the Panthers’ organization after only one season at the helm, he received an offer he couldn’t refuse from the Knights. “I’m very excited. It’s an oppor- tunity to work with two of the best hockey guys around in Dale and Mark Hunter,” says Curcio. “It’s very overwhelming right now, but I’m ex- cited by the opportunity and chal- lenge.” Curcio acknowledges that he had other offers from several OHL clubs, but his loyalty to the Panthers kept him from making the leap -- that was until the Knights came calling. “I hadn’t given it much thought, but then I had the opportunity to meet Dale and we had a discus- sion of possibly working with him this year. It came about all at once. There’s no better place I’d rather be than to learn from these two guys. “A lot of thought went into it, but when the London opportunity came along, it was a quick decision.” Curcio notes his coaching stint with the Panthers was a positive ex- perience. A former assistant coach with the Panthers, he took over the head coaching reins three games into the regular season after former head coach John Winder was relieved of his duties. After a fifth-place South Confer- ence regular-season campaign, the Panthers took out the favoured To- ronto Junior Canadians in a thrilling seven-game series, which included the longest game in league history. In the next round, the Panthers upset the top-ranked Vaughan Vi- pers, again in seven games. The Panthers were eventually ousted in four straight games by the St. Michael’s Buzzers in the league quarter-finals. “We had so much success last year. To go as far as we did and to do it in the style we did, it was great. It’s something I’ll cherish forever,” he says. While his current mandate is to establish himself as an assistant coach with the Knights, Curcio says he eventually wants to become an OHL head coach. “I think you always want to prog- ress, but my focus right now is assist- ing Dale Hunter and doing the best job possible,” he says. “I’m not looking for anything very soon, but you’re always looking to progress.” In addition to stepping down from the Panthers, Curcio will also be leav- ing his post as the assistant general manager of the Toronto Red Wings’ Greater Toronto Hockey League or- ganization. He plans to re-locate from Toronto to London in time for the begin- ning of the Knights’ training camp on Aug. 27. With the Panthers just more than a month away from the start of train- ing camp on Aug. 20, the onus is on Panthers’ management to hire a new head coach -- and quickly, says gen- eral manager Frank Robinson. “We’ve got about a week-and-a- half to get a head coach in place because we have things to do. We had new recruits coming in, so we have to get things ready for training camp. It’s going to be a busy week,” says Robinson. Robinson admits he and the Pan- thers’ ownership group have ban- died about several names to replace Curcio, but no announcement is im- minent. “We have a couple of names in mind. We’re gonna pursue that over the next week to see if there’s a fit,” says Robinson. He admits his phone is already ringing with interested candidates for the position. ‘A lot of thought went into it, but when the London opportunity came along, it was a quick decision.’ PAT CURCIO Pat Curcio Pebbles With an 0-3 mark and no hope of finishing in the top two in Se- ries ‘A’ with Ajax-Pickering and Mohawk, the Wellington Aces for- feited Sunday’s playoff game with the Stars, thus finishing a dismal 0-4 in the opening playoff round... Rock sniper Wayne Burke had no thoughts of playing this sea- son, as work commitments kept him on the sidelines. The former Kitchener-Waterloo Kodiaks Major Series player was lured back to the game and to the Rock after learning of goaltender Steve Di- etrich and Jim Velt- man playing for the Rock this season... Veltman had four assists on Friday and three on Saturday, including one on Burke’s OT win- ner... In the Series ‘B’ playoffs, Owen Sound has sewn up a semifinal berth after beating the Norwood Nitro and Brooklin Mer- chants in round-robin action on the weekend. PAGE B2 ◆ NEWS A DVERTISER ◆ July 18, 2007A/P Sounds like music in Durham this weekend By Christy Chase cchase@durhamregion.com DURHAM — The Sound of Music has a special place in my heart. When I was a child, I was diagnosed with a heart condition, nothing too seri- ous, just annoying, although I’m sure my parents felt otherwise. This meant, among other things, an annual trip all through public and high school into Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, from my home in the village of Frank- ford, population 1,800. (It really hasn’t grown much either. It’s on the Trent River, north of Trenton, in case you’ve never heard of it.) This trip meant a day off school for me, my brother and one older sister (hurray), an outing with our parents (al- ways good) and a visit to see the heart specialist (Dr. Keith, a nice guy.) But my most vivid memories of those visits are the shopping or special things we always did afterwards -- my dad, a real softie, liked to treat us. I mean, we were in Toronto, a long way (in more than miles) from Frankford. And one of those special events on one of those trips was seeing the movie, The Sound of Music. I loved it then and still do (I can see the Port Perry Star film critic John Foote cring- ing now), partly because of the special memories it holds for me. So it’s great to see Cadenza Produc- tions staging the play version of one of my favourite things this July at Town Hall 1873 in Port Perry, a rare summer theatre adventure in Durham. The hills will come alive, the mountains will be climbed and the edelweiss will bloom July 19 to 21. Curtain time is 8 p.m. The cast of 35 to 40 and crew are put- ting the finishing touches on the musi- cal, which is based on the true story of would-be nun Maria who becomes gov- erness to the seven children of Capt. von Trapp, a loyal Austrian who doesn’t like what the Nazis are doing to his country. “We started rehearsals at the begin- ning of April,” said producer Landon Drew. “Our director (Nina Foxall) was doing a show in Oshawa so Carol Sal- amone, the music director, worked with the nuns and the kids.” “Kids and cues” is Foxall’s response when asked how things are going. Those two areas are her focus right now. The all-ages cast starts with Katrina Hachey, of Uxbridge, who is six and plays young Gretl, and goes up to, well, adults. Drew said rehearsals have been a challenge at this time of year, what with sports, dance recitals and school con- certs. In the lead roles are Mallory McGrath, of Port Perry, as Maria, and Rick Kerr as the widowed captain. McGrath is going into her fourth year in vocal perfor- mance at McGill University. This is her third play with Cadenza; last year she was one of the daughters in Cadenza’s production of Fiddler on the Roof. “It’s fabulous,” she said of her lead role. She takes her rehearsing to her sum- mer job as a nanny, singing to her infant charge and going over her lines. “Life imitating art,” said Kerr, referring to the fact Maria is a governess and Mc- Grath is a nanny. For Kerr, this is his 85th show as an actor. A theatre veteran in these parts, he also directs. “This happens to be a fabulous musi- cal,” he said. “I love the music. It’s a bigger part than I thought. I thought I’d come up, say a few lines and sing Edel- weiss. It’s a nice part.” Playing Max De- tweiler, a friend of the captain’s, is Johnny Soln, of Oshawa. This is his second play with Ca- denza, as he appeared in Fiddler on the Roof last summer. He’s also appeared on stage in plays at Queen’s University in Kingston, where he studied drama and sociology. He’s enjoying appearing in a musical that is based on fact. “He’s a character,” he said of Max, “but he’s kind of a real person as well. He’s fun.” Bev Sotropa, of Markham, plays the Baroness Elsa Schraeder, who has her own eye on the captain and isn’t pleased to see Maria show up. “It’s a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s so fun playing somebody that everybody hates. “And it’s a great group of people to work with.” Salamone, who founded Cadenza, said she likes doing the summer plays. And the cast have been busy making appearances throughout Port Perry, singing at the recent ALS concert and downtown during Midnight Madness. She said proceeds from the show will go to Lakeridge Port Perry and to the ALS fund started by Heather Moore. The children are played by Mary-Fran- ces Hill, of Oshawa, as Liesl, Mark Foster, of Port Perry, as Friedrich, Kayla Bacon, of Uxbridge, as Louisa, Eric Mitchell, of Uxbridge, as Kurt, Melissa Blackburn, of Whitby, as Brigitta, Bailey Craig, of Port Perry, as Marta, and Katrina Hachey, of Uxbridge, as Gretl. Mother Superior is Joyce Schneider, of Oshawa, a drama teacher at Monsi- gnor Paul Dwyer Catholic High School. Rolfe, Liesl’s boyfriend who joins the Nazi party, is played by Sean Blakely of Whitby. The production crew includes chore- ographer Steven Longauer, a Paul Dwyer teacher, award-winning costumer de- signer Mary Parulski and stage manager Monique Kleuskens. Salamone directs a stage orchestra made up of Durham musicians. Tickets are $20 and are available at Henshall’s Clothing, 241 Queen St., 905- 985-1965. Ajax trucker’s documentary on TV DURHAM — When Hurricane Ka- trina pounded the Gulf Coast two years ago, Bowmanville trucker Peter Bruno waited out the storm in a parking lot near Memphis, Tennessee. The devastation caused by the mas- sive storm prompted him to help, and he made two trips to Mississippi with a truck full of goods donated by Durham and area residents. The hour-long film Long Haul, Big Hearts, directed by Ajacian Doug Raby, tells Bruno’s story and is set to makes it debut on the small screen. Tremeer, who has an exhibit at the Sarah Jane Williams Heritage Centre in town through Aug. 24, has just won a $25,000 award that will take him to Europe in November. The Joseph Plaskett Award goes to graduate arts students and allows them to study art independently in Europe, Tremeer said. It’s the fourth year for the award, which isn’t well known, said Tremeer, a masters stu- dent at the University of Western On- tario. “I’m pretty excited about getting this award,” he said. His exhibit locally, which grew out of one last year at the Visual Arts Centre, is tied in with both his thesis and this award, he said. The exhibit features paintings and sculptures that are based on artifacts stored in the museum, bringing them to new life. He’s also now working with military dioramas, 3D depictions of battles, that he’s found at the Military Mu- seum in north Oshawa, Bowmanville Museum and other locations. He’s sketching and photographing these dioramas and then creating paintings based on them. In Europe, he’ll visit museums and look at other dioramas, including a huge one of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Tremeer, who col- lects lead soldiers and builds model tank and other military equipment kits, will also visit battlefields and mu- seums at Vimy Ridge, Dieppe, Nor- mandy and in Holland. He’s looking at how history has been told as narrative in the diora- mas, he said. He calls it “the construc- tion of history.” Dioramas may look realistic but really aren’t, he said. His thesis, Painting History/History Paint- ing, looks at how history, particularly battles, is dramatized after the fact in art. ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT durhamregion.com DURHAM — You can catch the rhythms of the earth at a new exhibit at the Visual Arts Centre until Aug. 26. Recent Works by Ro- wena Dykins and Wolf Kohler features abstract paintings by the two art- ists, both concerned with the rhythms of the earth. Natural forms and geo- graphic textures of land- scape are the underlying force field in their works, said curator Maralynn Cherry. “Whether one is deal- ing with optical illusion, trompe l’oeil or expres- sionist marks, the alchemy of painting is a visceral process,” she said. “It is here that one enters a vi- sual terrain. To paint the landscape without look- ing is to internalize a life- time of focal points within. Memories, feelings and sensations are invested onto a surface. The sen- sual nature of the paint then mimics a transforma- tive action, closely linked to the psyche, as the in- dividual characteristics of a language of paint devel- ops.” The centre is at 143 Simp- son Ave. in Bowmanville. Two of them in row, to be exact. The Presidents Cup Trophy, which will be contested by some of the best golfers in the world at The Royal Mon- treal Golf Club in September, will be on display at the local club from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 22. The next day, the club will host a Monday Qualifying event for the PGA’s Canadian Open, to be held at the Angus Glen Golf Club July 26-29. The public is welcome to both events. The Presidents Cup was developed to give the world’s best non-European players an opportunity to compete in international team match play compe- tition. It is a biennial event, played in non-Ryder Cup years. The trophy is currently touring the country to promote the fact the tour- nament is being held in Canada this year. The Canadian Open qualifier will give fans a chance to see some high- level golf, as players look to qualify for the PGA Tour’s lone Canadian stop. The field for the qualifying event is not yet finalized, but it’s sure to include some currently in the Canadian, Na- tionwide and possibly even PGA tours. Among the Durham Region players already confirmed are Eddie Maunder, Will Mitchell, John Simpson, Derrick Jordan and Matt St. Thomas of Whitby, Steve Martel and Peter McNeil of Os- hawa, Ken Boyce and Frank Corby of Ajax, Jason Knill of Brooklin and Rich- ard Ross of Uxbridge. Anyone be interested in caddying for one of the players can call The Royal Ashburn Golf Club at 905-686-1121. The Flames met another Canadian squad, the Burlington Cobras, in the championships final, emerging with a 3-1 victory. Shannon Kennedy sparked the Flames with a two-goal effort; Nick- idia Thompson netted the other marker. Pickering started the tournament with a 5-1 win over London Unit- ed. Thompson scored three times, with singles to Kennedy and Savitry Phomsaphao. Next, the Pickering girls edged the host Greece Eclipse 3-2. Nicole Renouf, Phomsaphao and Kennedy scored for the Flames. Pickering played to a 1-1 draw in its final round-robin game against Ottawa Power. Phomsaphao scored for the Flames. The game was called because of extreme lightning and thunderstorms. Flames’ goalkeepers Channon Traill and Jessica Garan performed solidly in the tournament. Earlier in the season, the Flames competed in the West Niagara Invita- tional Tournament in May, finishing as finalists after a tough 1-0 loss to Saltfleet in the finals. The Flames was also tournament champion in the Peterborough Chal- lenge Cup last month. Other team members are Nicole Bates, Leigh Bedford, Lindsay Cane, Paige Feltham, Marlee Foster, Van- essa Garcia, Alexandra Lee, Glenna Mullings, Megan Pritchard, Amreen Thawer and Meghan Taylor. Jeff Kennedy coaches the team, as- sisted by Asif Thawer. The team’s trainer is Pat Taylor and the manager is Debbie Kennedy.
