Since a story appeared in the Wednesday News Advertiser about the Legion missing a dead- line to apply for a $1,000 donation from the federal government for Canada Day celebrations, people have been lining up to make up the funds. On Friday, Legion president Mike O’Hara received an anony- mous letter which included 10 $100 bills. The person wrote, “When I read in today’s newspaper that your Legion was denied the small amount of funds you requested for your July 1 Canada Dad cel- ebration, I was most saddened.” The writer notes he has pic- tures of his grandfather on a war field in Europe. “I feel very strongly about our veterans from every war. That was the question posed Thursday at UOIT and Durham College where a nuclear recep- tion centre exercise was held. The practice run was one of a series of field exercises planned by the Durham Emergen- cy Management Office (D.E.M.O.) as part of Dur- ham’s ongoing Emergen- cy Management Training program. The Region of Durham orga- nized volunteers to act as evac- uees so emergency personnel could go through an exercise in a way that resembled an actual emergency. “This is the first year we’ve chosen to use people who are developmentally and physically disabled in the exercise,” said Dan Salter, Coordinator of Emer- gency Services for the region. “It allows us to see how they would react and go through the pro- cess.” First up was establishing a re- ception centre to monitor and decontaminate citizens and their pets who may have been exposed to radioactivity. “Once the evacuees arrive at the reception centre their vehi- cles are monitored and the indi- viduals in the car are monitored as well,” explained Ivan Ciuciura, director of emergency measures for the Region. If an individual was clean, he received a green ticket to put on his car and he would be free to leave. If he received a red ticket, it’s on to the next step in the process. “If required, they would go through a car wash,” said Mr. Ciuciura. “The car wash is a decontami- nation centre.” Contaminated residents would have to wash with soap and water, and leave contaminated clothes behind. New clothes would be provided. The Ontario Emergency Man- agement Act requires munici- palities with nuclear facilities to prepare emergency plans. These planned exercises are Cash flows into Ajax Legion for Canada Day events ✦ See Donations, Page 4 ✦ See Officials, Page 2 For more on this story Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo Durham College and UOIT hosted a nuclear reception centre exercise that included local levels of government, firefighters, police, OPG as well as other emergency personnel. Sean Murley from OPG Darling- ton makes certain that a car is not contaminated as it makes its way through the safety process. Durham Region is ready designed to practise and evaluate re- sponse capabilities of the Region of Durham Social Service department, Ontario Power Generation and Os- hawa Fire Services, as well as other supporting government, volunteer and community agencies. If a nuclear emergency were to happen tomorrow, Mr. Salter said it would take about four hours to set up a reception centre. “The facility is designed with staff on call to be ready,” said Mr. Salter. “There are about 20 organizations that are participating to come to- gether to put one of these centres together,” said Mr. Ciuciura. “This allows us to make sure the system in place will work.” Constable Wayne King of the Dur- ham Regional Police Services said the police are always ready. “In the event that something like this does happen, we go into auto pilot so to speak. We’re used to and prepared for various situations,” said Const. King. Drama students from Henry Street High School were on hand to play the role of the evacuees. Grade 9 student Cameron Wood said he felt somewhat safer knowing that the Region is prepared, but he wasn’t sure it will work. “I don’t think the (building) is closed off that much,” explained Cameron. “If a nuclear reaction started, the radiation could probably still come in.” There are two designated recep- tion centres within Durham Region. One is located at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium and the other at Durham College and UOIT. NOTICE OF PUBLIC INFORMATION FORUMS SOUTHEAST COLLECTOR TRUNK SEWER INDIVIDUAL ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT Regarding lands in Markham, Toronto and Pickering The Regional Municipality of York (York Region) and the Regional Municipality of Durham (Durham Region) will hold two Public Information Forums (PIFs) at the following locations to allow interested persons to comment on the recent project activities undertaken for the Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer Individual Environmental Assessment (IEA): Date June 26, 2007 Date June 27, 2007 Time: 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Time: 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Presentation at 7:00 p.m. Presentation at 7:00 p.m. Location: Pine Ridge Secondary School Location: Cedar Brae Golf and Country Club 2155 Liverpool Road North 6431 Steeles Avenue East Pickering, ON Scarborough, ON As part of undertaking the IEA, Public Information Forums (PIFs) were previously held in Pickering and Markham in June 2006 to present the Recommended Alternative to the Undertaking, and a “long list” of alternative sewer routes through the study area. Since that time, York and Durham Regions have carried out a number of project activities that have lead to the identification of a recommended sewer route. The recommended route begins just north of Box Grove in the Town of Markham and follows along 14th Avenue to Townline Road. The proposed route then turns south and follows Townline Road to the Hydro corridor, where it travels east along the Hydro corridor to Liverpool Road. It then travels south on Liverpool Road to Finch Avenue. It continues east on Finch Avenue and ends at Valley Farm Road in the City of Pickering (see map). With this route in mind, the proposed trunk sewer will be tunneled underground the entire length. Another round of PIFs is being held as noted above to allow interested persons to comment on project activities, including: • Screening of the “long list” of thirteen alternative sewer routes to a “short-list” of five routes • Evaluation of the five “short-listed” routes • Recommended sewer route (see map) • Recommended water efficiency and inflow/infiltration reduction measures The existing Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer is an integral component of the York Durham Sewage System (YDSS). York and Durham Regions are undertaking the Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer IEA to address the additional sanitary sewer flows projected from future growth as allowed for in York Region’s Official Plan. Durham Region is a co-proponent with York Region on the Individual Environmental Assessment since a portion of the study area is within Durham Region, and both Regions are co-owners of the existing Southeast Collector Trunk Sewer within Durham Region. Comments and information regarding this IEA are being received from the public to assist York and Durham Regions in meeting the requirements of the Environmental Assessment Act. This material will be maintained on file for use during the project, and may be included in project documentation. Comments and information received will be used in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. Your participation is an important part of the process and we welcome your input. We encourage you to attend either one of the PIFs to review the materials available and provide any comment or information that you have with regard to the project. A copy of the Synopsis Report on the “Recommended Sewer Route”, as well as other background information, is available on the project website: http://sec.cenet.ca. Reference copies of this background information are also available for viewing at the Pickering Central Library, Malvern District Library, and Unionville Library, as well as at York Region Headquarters and Durham Region Headquarters. Additional information on this IEA can also be obtained by contacting one of the project team members listed below. Written comments on the recent project activities should be submitted to one of the following team members by July 13, 2007. Comments can also be submitted using the e-mail connection on the project website. That’s one of the recommenda- tions in a report released by Green- peace Canada on the hazard caused by tritium, a radioactive byproduct of Candu nuclear stations, such as Pickering and Darlington. Prepared by Ian Fairlie, a British scientist and expert on radiation, Tritium Hazard Report: Pollution and Radiation Risk from Canadian Nuclear Facilities, also recommends anyone living within five kilometres of a tritium-emitting site not eat any food grown in their gardens or any wild foods. Jacquie McInnes, manager of public affairs at the Pickering nucle- ar station, disputes the health risks, however, saying, “We wouldn’t oper- ate our facilities if we didn’t believe they were safe. OPG has been op- erating in this community for more than 35 years and no member of the public has ever been harmed by our operations.” Mr. Fairlie also recommended the allowable levels of tritium in water and the air be set at 20 bequerels per litre (a bequerel is a measure of radi- ation). The current limit is 7,000 b/l. In 2006 the actual measurements in the drinking water from OPG’s nuclear facilities was between 5 and 7 b/ls, said Ms. McInnes. Shawn-Patrick Stensil, an energy campaigner for Greenpeace, says, “We have the most lax standards in the world. We’d like to see a revisit- ing and moving to the ACES com- mittee recommendation.” In 1994, Ontario’s Advisory Com- mittee on Environmental Standards (ACES) recommended the province lower tritium limits immediately to 100 b/l and then down to 20 b/l in five years. At the time, the allowable level was 40,000 b/l. Ontario Hydro (predecessor to Ontario Power Generation) said set- ting the standard at 20 b/l would cost it $1 billion. Mr. Stensil says Greenpeace had a meeting with Ontario Environment Minister Laurel Broten on Wednes- day and she’s asked her water drink- ing advisory committee to look at the allowable standards. “Indications are tritium is more dangerous than we thought.” Mr. Stensil noted Dow Chemical is moving toward zero emissions. “The nuclear industry should look to reduce the risk as well. “The way we evaluate chemical standards to radioactive standards is a double standard,” he said, not- ing chemical standards are looked at over a seven-year period while nuclear is only one year. “What’s alarming is we’re setting our standards based on the needs of Candu operators. Our health stan- dards have been politicized,” Mr. Stensil states. The company has a “very extensive radiation monitor- ing program that takes into account not only the tritium, but all potential sources of radiation from our plant. It’s less than one per cent of regula- tory limit,” Ms. McInnes states. “It’s a very minute amount of radiation the average Canadian is exposed to from natural sources, such as the sun, soil, food and man-made sources, such as plane travel, X-rays and televi- sions.” OPG has an internal target of 100 b/l, Ms. McInnes notes. Dr. Robert Kyle, Durham Region’s medical officer of health, wasn’t available for comment. Information posted on the Re- gion’s website notes, “Although the Greenpeace report recommends that pregnant women and children under four-years old should not live within 10-kilometres of nuclear plants, the health department has found no basis for this recommen- dation.” A study on radiation and health by the health department also found that “when stillbirths and various defects were examined in Ajax-Pickering and Clarington, rates were found to be at provincial levels, significantly lower or the number of cases was too small to report (less that five).” The Greenpeace report is available at www.greenpeace.ca. I hope many memories and smiles are created on this Canada Day. Sending all my gratitude for the freedom I’ve gained from all veterans.” Mr. O’Hara noted other donations have come in, two for $20 and one for $150. The donations have been “out of this world. We weren’t out begging for money. We were trying to make a point with our government,” Mr. O’Hara stated. He readily admits the Legion missed the deadline to apply to Cel- ebrate Canada, part of the Heritage Department. “We definitely made a mistake. We’re a totally volunteer organiza- tion. I can’t turn around and give someone a tough time about it,” he noted. “I’m still president and I’m still responsible for it. We’ll work to get it fixed.” Steve Gilchrist, the federal Conservative Party candi- date in Ajax-Pickering Riding in the next election, presented a personal cheque for $1,000 Thursday evening. The cheque came with “no strings attached. It’s a personal cheque,” Mr. Gilchrist stated. He noted 37 organi- zations missed the deadline. Also on Friday, Inotek Signs of Ajax announced a donation of 500 signs the Legion can sell. Eric Fowler, the co-owner of Inotek, said, “My partner Max Best and I both live in Ajax. We’ve both lived in the area for over 30 years. We’ve always supported the Legion.” “We read about it and thought what better way to support our troops and the Legion.” The 500 signs will be dropped off on Friday, June 29. Ajax-Pickering Liberal MP Mark Holland has also lined up several donations. Among the major donors are Faheem Boukhari, president of the Mississauga Muslim Community Centre, who gave $1,000. Phoenix A.M.D. International also donating $1,000, while Paul White, president of the Fairport Beach Neighbourhood Association in Pickering, is contributing $500 on behalf of his organization, Mr. Hol- land stated. “Initially, I made a few phone calls. But the calls started to come in when they read the story. People were upset,” Mr. Holland said. He’s known Mr. Boukhari for years. “He knew how upset I was and how upset the Legion was. It’s an excep- tional contribution.” Donations are still coming in and Mr. Holland didn’t know how much has been pledged. “$4,000 at least.” THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 17, 2007 PAGE 5 Pdurhamregion.com 711 Krosno Blvd., Pickering 905-837-9332 (Frenchman’s Bay Area) Th e Original Hamburger PlusTed’s Famous Steak on a Kaiser & Onion Rings Th e Original Hamburger Ted’s Famous Steak on a Kaiser & Onion Rings The Big “M” Drive In The Best in Take-Out Since 1965 Chris is back fl ipping burgers SpotlightSpotlight on Businesson Business ADVERTISING FEATURE Fresh Homemade Dishes - Full Menu • Take Out • Off Site Catering • Daily Specials Casual Dining Reservations Accepted 905-427-3403 1755 Pickering Pkwy. www.papps.ca Join us on Pickering’s Largest Outdoor Patio! 2006 Platinum Banquet Hall All round restaurant BANQUET FACILITIES 50 - 130 people PRIVATE ROOM 20 - 40 people PerfectPerfect forfor anyany occasion!occasion! 120 Gibson Dr., Markham 905-427-1488 or 1-800-521-3229 Any window job ordered in May/June valued at $2,500 or more will receive a $100 Amercian Express Gift Certifi cate. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Eco fund aims to save energy It’s not a lot but a little long green may be the start of real action on the provincial and municipal level on climate change. Premier Dalton McGuinty unveiled a three-year $220 million fund to be spread among the province’s 445 municipalities. The breakdown would see $20 million in grants and $200 million in low-interest loans paid out to cities and towns to improve such items as insulation, upgrade windows, repair roofs, replace old lighting systems and find other ways to become more energy efficient. We’re not talking big bucks here: averaged out across the en- tire province the amount works out to just $45,000 per munici- pality. But like the old saying says, it’s the thought that counts. Doug Reycraft, president of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, said his group was happy to receive the cash but would appreciate it more if it was twice as much. Mr. McGuinty said the amount could climb if the program is well-received and provides dividends. He told a group of municipal leaders in Peterborough, where he unveiled the pro- gram last week, “we’ll have to explore renewing it or perhaps increasing it.” Many municipalities are already taking steps to become leaner and greener. Oshawa, for instance, has a plan to save energy at its city hall complex and is investing in more fuel- efficient vehicles. Such measures can only be enhanced by provincial support. Mr. McGuinty may only be testing the proverbial waters with his Municipal Eco Fund. It’s likely that with the drive to cut greenhouse gas emissions across the country receiving some recent support by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, more mea- sures will follow. There are already plans to phase out the traditional light bulb in favour of light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. The Province is also working hard at a plan to cut plastic bag use in half within a few years. Every little bit counts and it makes sense that our municipal and provincial governments would take a leading role. In the end, saving energy helps save money as well as saving our en- vironment. Freeze compost to avoid pests To the editor: Re: ‘Raccoon rascal has green bin all figured out’, June 1. Since the program started in Oshawa last July, I, like all oth- ers in Durham Region, started saving our kitchen scraps and putting them in the small green bin, later to be transferred into the larger green bin for pickup day. What I noticed right away with this program (I really do like it!) was that in very short order, especially in the heat of sum- mer, those cute little bins start to smell. They really start to smell. Even with our bin on an enclosed porch so the little bandits in our area can’t get to it, we can still smell it throughout the main floor of the house. What I learned to do very early on in the program was to put a full, tied-up small bag in the freezer until pickup day! No odour or critter problems to deal with. When a small bag was full, I would pop into the freezer and then transfer it to the large bin the morning of pickup. Works like a charm. Anyone with the problem of raccoons eating green from their bins should give this a try. Sure beats having to clean up rotting, stinking compost! Brenda Pye Oshawa Tough conditions needed H ere’s how easy it is to get shot these days. It was in April 2005 when a guy named Derek was making an evening run to a convenience store in his south Pickering neighbourhood. Ahead of him on his street, he saw a car driven by a pal of his, apparently pulled up beside a Honda he didn’t recognize. Derek didn’t know that earlier in the evening his friend had been engaged in a brief altercation with the guys in the Honda, during which one of the strang- ers had flashed a gun. As his friend pulled away Derek followed slowly be- hind and when he pulled alongside the Honda, he offered a simple “What’s up?” The simple salutation brought this response: One of the young men in the Honda pulled a handgun and fired at Derek. The bullet lodged in the driver’s side door of his car. The intended target followed the Honda and got a licence plate number; an anonymous tip provided more infor- mation on the identity of the shooter. On Thursday, that man, Shamal Har- ris, who was 18 at the time of the inci- dent, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison, six months above the minimum for gun-related offences. (Al- though he had pleaded guilty, there’s little evidence Mr. Harris felt particu- larly remorseful. During an interview for a pre-sentence report he lied to a probation officer, saying he’d used a BB gun. His lawyer said Mr. Harris was “embarrassed” to admit he’d fired a real gun at another human being.) The sentencing came a day after raids across the GTA targeting gang members saw the seizure of numerous guns and less than a week after Durham police stopped a car in Oshawa and seized a submachine gun and three handguns. It is flat-out terrifying there is this kind of weaponry in circulation. At the very least sentencing is, to a degree, addressing this behaviour. The four-year minimum for gun crimes is being imposed, meaning seri- ous pen time for thugs who wave guns around. Now, how about eliminating bail for people charged with gun crimes? They’re offenders with no regard for the law. The first priority must be pro- tection of the public. Jeff Mitchell is the Metroland Durham Region Media Goup’s justice reporter. His column appears periodically. E-mail jmitchell@durhamregion.com. Jeff Mitchell staff writer Too easy to get shot these days , as Pickering man’s case reveals Brief encounter led to gunfire By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A Pickering man who shot at a stranger during a brief encounter on a city street has been sentenced to four-and-a- half years in prison. Shamal Harris, who was 18 at the time of the in- cident in April 2005, was sentenced Thursday by Superior Court Justice Alex Sosna. With the equivalent of 22 months of pretrial custody, Mr. Harris was sent to a federal peniten- tiary for the balance of his sentence. Mr. Harris pleaded guilty in March to firing a gun with intent to injure. Court heard Mr. Harris, then 18, was a passenger in a car on Alwin Circle on the evening of April 11, 2005. The victim, who was on his way to a convenience store, saw a vehicle being driven by an acquaintance stop briefly beside the Honda in which Mr. Harris was riding. Unbeknownst to the victim, his acquaintance had been involved in an altercation with Mr. Har- ris sometime earlier and when they met on Alwin that evening Mr. Harris had flashed a handgun at the friend, the prosecutor said. The victim pulled alongside Mr. Miller’s ve- hicle as his friend pulled away and asked, “What’s up?”, court heard. Mr. Harris pulled a handgun and fired a single shot that penetrated the driver’s side door of Mr. Rogers’s vehicle. Mr. Rog- ers followed Mr. Miller’s vehicle and memorized the licence plate number, which he relayed to Dur- ham police. Mr. Harris pleaded guilty before his trial was to begin. $BOBEBµT-BSHFTU"WJBUJPO 5SBEF4IPX'MZJO +VOF 0TIBXB.VOJDJQBM"JSQPSU 4)08)0634 &YIJCJUT4UBUJD%JTQMBZT 'SJEBZQN 4BUVSEBZBNQN 4VOEBZBNQN 4FFUIFMBUFTU5VSCJOFBOE7-+µT /FXBUUIJTZFBSTTIPX *GJU¿JFTJUµTBUUIFTIPX (&/&3"-"%.*44*0/ "EVMUT…4FOJPST:PVUI $IJMESFO"OE6OEFS'SFF 'SFF1BSLJOH (PUPXXXDBOBEJBOBWJBUJPOFYQPDPN 8FMDPNFUPUIFUI"OOVBM Gi\j\ek\[Yp1 9ifl^_kkfpfl`egXikYp Total Aviation & Airport Solutions AVIATION WORLD £ $FTTOB.VTUBOH £ &"%44PDBUB5.# £ %JBNPOE%+FU £ &NCSBFS1IFOPN £ $JSSVT43(54 .FFUUIFQJMPUT 5PVDIUIFQMBOFT 5BLFB¿JHIU 0'' $PNQMJNFOUTPG $PVQPOQFS1FSTPO (FOFSBM "ENJTTJPO We offer urban bistro cuisine and an extensive selection of wines and spirits in a casually elegant and tastefully appointed atmosphere. 1JDLFSJOH`TOFXFTU1JDLFSJOH`TOFXFTU DPOUFNQPSBSZEJOJOHDPOUFNQPSBSZEJOJOH FYQFSJFODFFYQFSJFODF GLENDALE MARKETPLACE 1900 DIXIE RD. By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — A veteran officer was overcome with emotion when video de- picting a woman’s apparent attempts to hang herself in a police station holding cell was played for inquest ju- rors Wednesday. Breathing heavily and holding back tears, Spe- cial Constable Mark Crox- ford had to excuse himself from the small courtroom in which an inquest into the January 2004 death of Christine Budgell is being held. Ms. Budgell’s daugh- ter, Shannon Milton, who sat stoically throughout the powerful video, also finally succumbed and rushed from the room, her face red and tear-streaked. The images, captured by a camera monitoring the cell in the 17 Division sta- tion in Oshawa, depict what appear to be numerous at- tempts by Ms. Budgell, 43, to wrap stockings she’d tied to an overhead ventilation grate around her neck. Cov- ering more than 10 minutes, the pictures show Ms. Bud- gell alternately fiddling with the socks -- which she’d tied together and stretched out -- standing tip-toe with the ligature around her neck and her arms at her sides and banging on the glass above the cell bars. Coroner’s counsel Mi- chael Blain did not show the video in its entirety, but ju- rors have already heard Ms. Budgell was found hanging, the socks around her neck, in the cell on the evening of Jan. 17, 2004. She died three days later in hospital. Other video images de- picted officers working in the booking station that night noticing Ms. Bud- gell on a video monitoring screen, then rushing down a corridor to try to save her. Const. Croxford cut his thumb slicing through the ligature, which held Ms. Budgell upright. “They said something didn’t look right, that it looked like something might be around her neck,” Const. Croxford said. “I remember them saying she’s hanging.” The three cops dashed to the holding cell, he said. “I opened the cell and I immediately cut the liga- ture,” he testified. “I expect- ed her to stand up -- she didn’t. “I kind of caught her.” Const. Croxford per- formed CPR on the woman while his colleagues scram- bled to call an ambulance. Ms. Budgell was rushed to hospital in Oshawa but never recovered. Const. Croxford was among a number of officers to testify that Ms. Budgell, who’d been picked up for public intoxication, was restless and noisy, but gave no indication she may harm herself. She was held at 17 Division on three occasions between Jan. 5 and 17 and was known to loudly protest her incarceration, officers said. During that time Ms. Budgell, who had fled an abusive relationship, was living in shelters and on city streets, jurors have heard. On one other occasion when she was being held at 17 Division a camera caught images of the woman appar- ently attempting to make a ligature out of a drawstring from her coat that Ms. Bud- gell wrapped around her neck and the bars of her cell. Jurors saw those im- ages earlier in the inquest. “At no time did I think she was a threat to herself,” said Sergeant Ray Wiggers, one of the officers on duty in the booking room Jan. 17. The inquest, under Coro- ner William Lucas, contin- ues. 1163 Kingston Road in Pickering 905-839-5425 Summer FunSummer Fun Photo Contest Photo ContestSummer FunSummer Fun Photo Contest Photo Contest $100 Gift$100 Gift CertificateCertificate $100 Gift$100 Gift CertificateCertificate You Are AYou Are A Winner!Winner! The 18-month-old boy sustained bumps and abrasions after falling from an SUV on Wilson Road near Hillcroft Street shortly after 8 p.m., said Durham Police Sergeant Paul McCurbin. “We don’t believe the child was thrown out of the vehicle,” he said. Witnesses called police after seeing the youngster tumble from the moving vehicle, Sgt. McCurbin said. They told cops the driver stopped, got out and retrieved the child, then put him in the SUV and drove off. Officers traced a licence number pro- vided by witnesses to a home in north- west Oshawa and found the youngster with an elderly man in a what police described as “squalid conditions.” It was determined the man could not properly care for the child and the CAS was called in, Sgt. McCurbin said. A decision was made to apprehend the child. No charges have yet been laid but an investigation continues. Showroom: 577 Ritson Rd. S. Her audience of busy executives follows suit. With the lights dimmed and the tables pushed to the perimeter of the large space, Ms. Bedding has transformed the compa- ny’s Ajax boardroom into a calming yoga studio. “Breathe in,” she tells her class, as she leads them into another pose. A certified instructor and a budding entrepreneur, Ms. Bedding has found a niche for herself in the ever-popular world of yoga. With a hockey bag full of mats and other yoga props, she is equipped to set up a provisional yoga studio at any company that wishes to offer the stress-relieving benefits of the practice to their employ- ees. “I enjoy going to the company,” she said, adding the best part is seeing the strain of the day leave the faces of those who take part in her program. “You can see this tired look on their faces, so many things on their minds,” she said. “At the end of the class, you just see a different person. A free person. It lets them go home in a really good mood.” Having spent most of her adult life working in sales and retail, the mother of two teenagers got into yoga as a way to add balance to her busy life. More than a workout, yoga became a lifestyle and she soon wanted to share it with others. Four years ago, she made the leap from employee to entrepreneur -- opening up Secure Care by Sandra Dee, a business that offers in-home support for seniors and teaches yoga to groups. Her first venture into the corporate world was at Veridian where she has been teaching yoga for more than two years under a program she calls Yoga on the Go (www.yogaonthego.ca). “Sandra has changed our lives with yoga,” said Diana Hills-Milligan, a long- time participant in the Veridian yoga pro- gram. “It helps us to deal with the stresses of work.” As they set up their yoga mats for the Tuesday afternoon session, her co-work- ers nod in agreement. “I can sit for longer periods of time and concentrate on my work,” said Pat Fergu- son. “We are very grateful to have this in our workplace.” Indeed, Ms. Bedding’s unique service that brings yoga to the workplace is a good option for employers that want to support health initiatives in the workplace. The cost of the class can be absorbed by the employer or split with the employee, but the key is to offer time and space for the class to take place. “Once you head home, it is harder to leave the house again to go for a class,” Ms. Bedding said. “This way you get to par- ticipate in the class and go home happier, calmer.” The benefits of practising yoga seep into every aspect of a person’s life, she adds -- making the benefits to employers seem pretty obvious: employees that are calmer and happier are also more productive and loyal. When a new company calls her to re- quest more information, Ms. Bedding sets up a lunch and learn for employees who are interested. During the session, she explains the benefits of yoga and gives participants a sample of the class. It is a good way for employers to get a feel for how many em- ployees would be interested in attending the class. Ms. Hills-Milligan says that her group is thrilled that Michael Angemeer, the presi- dent and CEO of Veridian, is supportive of health initiatives and allows for the class two days a week. “We have so much more inner and outer strength, a great calmness, and (Sandra) totally de-stresses us in an hour and a half. The energy after the classes is unbeliev- able,” she said. “We live for our Tuesdays and Thurs- days.” Business News Advertiser Sunday, June 17, 2007 durhamregion.com Finding time for balance in the busy corporate world By Izabela Jaroszynski ijaroszynski@durhamregion.com Do you have a new business opening in Durham Region? Hundreds of knives taken from army surplus store By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com OSHAWA — A judge is to rule later this month whether or not hundreds of knives seized from an Oshawa army surplus store are prohibited weapons that must be for- feited to the Crown. The Crown says the knives and other items seized in April 2006 from Hero Army Surplus fit the definition of prohibited weapons as set out in the Criminal Code; a lawyer for the shop argued Friday in Ontario Court that, just because some of the items have mechanisms that allow for them to be opened quickly or with one hand, it doesn’t make them illegal. “The mere fact a knife can open quickly in and of itself does not make it prohibited,” said lawyer Doug Gosbee. “With practice, any folding knife can be opened quickly.” But prosecutor Mitchell Flagg said many of the items seized from the shop by Durham police have blades that can be opened with the press of a button or a flick of the wrist, which means they’re prohibited as defined by the Criminal Code. “It’s not the design of the knife,” Mr. Flagg said. “It’s simply the function of the knife at the time it becomes of interest.” When the Crown opened its case last month Ontario Court Justice Donald Halikowski spent a day watching as a police officer dem- onstrated inventory seized from the shop, flicking open knives and displaying other items. The judge is to rule June 28 on the legality of the items in question. Both the Crown and defence have made some concessions, with the Crown agree- ing some items taken from the shop are not prohibited weapons. Mr. Gosbee said a few of the knives had loose rivets, a manufacturing flaw that allows for the blades to be flicked open; forfeiture of those items is not being contested, he said. At issue, however, are a number of knives that could be modified by loosening screws to allow for the blades to be quickly flicked open, Mr. Gosbee said. He argued that knives with all parts securely in place can’t be ruled illegal. The fact modifications can be made doesn’t place the knives in the category of prohibited weapons, he said. “All knives are dangerous,” he told the judge. “So are bricks. One has to construe this very narrowly.” Shop owner Jeff Schwartz, who testified Friday, said outside court the items taken from his shop are for the most part com- mon products offered for sale in a variety of stores. Some of the knives seized by police had screws anchoring the blades that weren’t fully tightened, making it easier for the blade to be opened, he allowed. But he said sim- ply tightening those screws would make the knives comply with the Criminal Code. “With the turn of a screw you can change the legality of these things,” Mr. Schwartz said. “It’s the same knife; one with the screw loose and one with the screw tight.” Mr. Schwartz has not been charged with any criminal offence. Gass, ABR, CSP Sales Representative TM REAL ESTATE8 By Nadia Hussein AJAX — Prom season was extra special for Allison Lewis. The Pickering High School stu- dent was the winner of Project Prom Dress, a contest created by fashion designer Leanne Beagan. Thanks to the competition, Alli- son got to wear her dream dress, get her hair and make-up done, have a limo ride and photo shoot. “All of this stuff doesn’t happen all the time and it was so amaz- ing to have won something as awesome as this,” says Allison. She couldn’t have done it on her own. Allison admits to not having good drawing skills and continu- ously making mistakes while work- ing on the design. She credits one of her friends for helping her draw the outline, and Ms. Beagan for mak- ing the dress look “so beautiful.” She also had an inspiration for the dress. A similar one was worn by actress Sarah Jessica Parker, whom Allison calls her idol when it comes to fashion style. Al- though it was hard to sketch the dress, thinking about it wasn’t. “I have a huge interest in fashion and definitely one day want to work in the industry,” she says. “I saw the dress and knew what I wanted to change to make it my own.” As someone who had been thinking and talking about prom since Grade 9, Allison’s day couldn’t have been better. According to Ms. Beagan, Allison’s hair, done by Valentino’s Grand Salon, was “perfect with a style that was slick, trendy and had the right amount of drama.” Rochelle, from Make Up in Motion, “used metal- lic shadows on Allison’s eyes to make them pop.” Southport Execu- tive Service provided a 10-seat limo and more than 30 of Allison’s fam- ily, friends and neighbours watched her photo shoot by The Story Catcher. Of course, Ms. Beagan also brought Allison’s dream dress to life. She enjoyed the experience so much that she encourages girls going into Grade 12 to enter the contest. Allison would like to thank Ms. Beagan “who made my dress more than anything I could have imag- ined,” and for “allowing me to have a great day.” She also thanks her mother for telling her about the con- test and helping her make an art board to send the application in. Laser hair removal is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis, a process where light energy causes injury to the hair follicle. Light penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) found in the hair shaft, increasing its temperature, destroying hair structures and inhibiting regrowth. What to look for when choosing a laser hair removal centre Ensure a proper consultation. Observe the way the clinic looks and feels (clean, up-to- date and informative). Laser equipment should be regularly maintained and certifi ed, Visit 2-3 before committing and avoid being pressured by sales reps to sigh up on the spot. Ensure that your concerns, objectives and personal safety are top priorities. Medically supervised means there should be an on-site physician to handle any complications, should they occur. Number of treatments and permanency It’s impossible to predict exact outcome or number of treatments required. Hair colour, thickness, density, skin colour and treatment area vary. Most people achieve results with 4-8 treatments, while a very small percentage will not respond to laser at all. Therefore, reputable laser hair removal centers do not guarantee results but will work with you on an individual basis to get the best results possible. Can all hair colours be treated? Black hair on light skin will have the best results. White, blonde and red hairs are less successful and consideration must be given to cost versus probable results. Who should not be treated? Recent unprotected sun-exposure, dark sun-tanned skin, pregnancy, patients who form keloids (thick scars), patients on photosensitising medications, or Accutane® (as recent as 6 months) are all contraindications. It is expensive? Generally, costs are much lower than the overall cost of continuous alternative hair removal methods. Be wary of seemingly very low pricing and guarantees (you get what you pay for). There are so many lasers advertised, how do I know which is the best? Ask questions about the technologies offered. There is no one laser ideal for all skin and hair types. Ideally a laser centre will have more than one type of laser and can advise as to which is best suited to you. Bottom Line - be informed. The Health Protection Branch of Canada (HPBC) does not currently regulate the practice of laser or light devices for hair removal; anyone can buy a laser and advertise services. There are no offi cial standards or guidelines for training, treatment protocol, or quality control. Caveat emptor. Ensure your treatment is provided by experienced personnel, customized for your skin and hair type in the appropriate setting and is affordable. Considering Laser Hair Removal? Dr. Charles Copeland practices cosmetic medicine at MD Aesthetics and is a member of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery. Costs vary according to the size of the treatment area, laser time, hair and skin type, and number of treatments performed. durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 14 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 17, 2007 Healthwellness ADVERTISING FEATURE& Health food stores provide detoxifi cation techniques from the ionic foot cleanse to herbal drainage in order to assist in the elimination of toxins, which affords the body an opportunity to function optimally. Effective nutrient supple- mentation can offer sup- port and increase metabo- lism at the cellular level, resulting in improved en- ergy levels and well-being. Some of the supplements include fi bre, which helps reduce cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, and aids in bowel function, as well as the essential fatty acid, (omega 3), which can assist heart function by increasing blood fl ow and reducing blood vessel blockages. Studies have shown that omega 3 is a key player in aiding arthri- tis, diabetes and mental illness. Vitamin A (as beta-carotene), Vitamin D and the minerals calcium, copper, zinc, magnesium and boron in proper ratios support calcium metabo- lism and healthy bones, while digestive enzymes provide support for ailing digestive tract conditions such as indigestion, heart burn and constipation. Protein whey powders are rich in branched chain amino acids, which con- tribute to the rebuilding of muscle during exercise and normal body activities and has many therapeutic benefi ts which include im- mune booster, antiviral, an- tibacterial and antifungal activity. Studies have shown that whey protein has anti-can- cer activity and helps lower cholesterol. Whey is an ex- cellent source of calcium, potentially reducing stress fractures, and playing an important role in bone formation. Since muscles are constantly in need of nutrients, protein assists in the production/growth of muscle by increasing the body’s retention of nitrogen thereby slowing muscle loss due to aging. Call or email info@ccbt.ca for more information or to book an appointment (NC)-With temperatures rising, there has been an increase in the amount of news coverage about the effects of sunshine on our health that has left many of us confused. While you are right to be concerned about over-exposing yourself to it, the sun is, essentially, healthy. Moderate exposure to sunshine has positive effects on not only our health, but on our well being as well. Sunshine is a great source of Vitamin D, which helps prevent osteopo- rosis and rickets, among other diseases. It also helps reduce the risk of developing cancers of the cervix, ovaries and breast. In addition, most of us notice our mood is elevated by and in sunshine, leading to a reduction in stress and depression. One key to reducing the risk from sunshine is protection – be it cloth- ing (including a hat) or a chemical sunscreen – and to be cognizant of the time of day. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is at its peak between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.; try to limit your time in the sun at these times. Another, equally important way to protect yourself from sunburn is to alkalinize your body. Many individuals have accumulated acids within the body due to a diet rich in acidic foods (e.g. cheese, meats, eggs) and defi cient in alkalinizing foods like leafy greens. Acidity in the tissues of the body can sensitize the immune cells and lead to an increased tendency to infl ammation. As a result of this sensitization, individuals who are “acidic” may get sunburns more easily or experi- ence more intense burns. Finally, as a Naturopathic Doctor, I recommend to my patients that, if they are going to be in the sun for any length of time, it is critically important for them to take anti-oxidants, such as vitamins A, C and E, as well as selenium and chokeberry (aronia), which is the strongest antioxidant food yet discovered. For those who are going to be ex- posed to the sun for prolonged periods, I will often recommend that they take chokeberry capsules, which contain a much more concen- trated form of the antioxidant. Finally, keep yourself hydrated when you are outdoors. Now, go have some fun in the sun. Page 17 Nichelle Prince one of only two girls and four from Ontario to compete at international soccer event By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com AJAX — An Ajax youth sub- scribed to the old adage of ‘try, try again’ where making Canada’s Danone Nations Cup soccer team was concerned. Although she had tried out be- fore, Nichelle Prince knew that turning 12 meant she’d have her best chance to earn a spot on Canada’s team that will travel to the prestigious, international tournament in Lyon, France this month. Prince’s determination to rise to the top of the heap and be one of 14 players from across the country for the tournament paid off in an invitation to join the elite Canadian team late last month. The talented soccer player and budding track and field star was one of only two girls and one of only four players from Ontario to make the final cut. “I’ve tried out before, but they typically only choose 12-year-olds to go,” she says. “As a 12-year-old I thought I had a chance to make it.” It was anything but an easy road for Prince to make her way on to the Canadian squad. The Dan- one team was handpicked from among 5,000 young people who took part in 14 McDonald’s soccer camps and five provincial selec- tion camps across the country. Prince notes she was unsure if she had performed well enough at the tryout camps, until that fateful call several weeks ago. “At first, my dad called my mom and she was shocked. She said I was going to Paris and I was happy,” says Prince. The eighth annual Danone Na- tions Cup is regarded as the World Cup of soccer for youth aged 11 and 12, as 40 countries and more than three million players in that age bracket involved in the larg- est international soccer event for young people. Prince notes she’s filled with pride just thinking about repre- senting Canada on the interna- tional stage. “I’ve ran in Pennsylvania (at the Hershey International Track and Field Championships) for On- tario, so I’m happy to represent Canada in soccer as well.” In addition to playing at a high- level tournament and sightseeing, Prince will also have the opportu- nity to meet French soccer legend Zinedine Zidane, who will serve as the Danone Nations Cup am- bassador. Prior to heading to France for the tournament from June 29 to July 1, the Canadian Danone team will attend a training camp from June 23 to 26 at the Haut-Riche- lieu Stadium in Saint-Jean-sur- Richelieu. During these three in- tensive days, the coaches will not only work to establish a winning strategy, but also to build strong team chemistry. The Canadian team’s big send- off is on June 26 at Montreal’s Trudeau Airport. Upon arriving in France, the team has the oppor- tunity to train at the Gerland sta- dium in Lyon before taking part in the international finals on June 29 and 30 and July 1. In addition to trying out for Canada’s Danone Cup team, Prince has played the outside midfield and forward positions with the Richmond Hill Raiders girls’ under-14 Ontario Youth Soc- cer League (OYSL) team. So far, the Raiders have won two games and tied one in league play. As a track and field athlete with the Bramalea Bullets Track Club, Prince has established a few pro- vincial records this track season. During the indoor season, she set new provincial records in the 200 metres (26.28 seconds), and 50 metres (7.02 seconds). She also had a personal best of 8.16 sec- onds in the 60 metres. In her first outdoor track meet last week in Burlington, she equaled the provincial 200-metre record with a time of 26.00 sec- onds. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 17, 2007 PAGE 17 Pdurhamregion.com Football peewees earn first win of season in OVFL DURHAM — The Ajax-Pickering Dolphins peewee Ontario Varsity Football League team’s first vic- tory of the season was a significant one. The Dolphins celebrated a big victory, 13-6, over last year’s champion and previously un- beaten Brampton Wilddogs at Ch- inguacousy Park recently. It was a statement game for the upstart Ajax-Pickering peewees, which are new to the OVFL peewee league this season. The Dolphins play today (Sun- day) against arch-rivals, the Os- hawa Hawkeyes, at Kinsmen Park at 4 p.m. Dolphins’ head coach Jeff Ahlst- edt had his players fully prepared for the Brampton test and they did not disappoint him. The first quarter was a close fought battle with the ground game showing promise with run- ning back D’Shane Chung start- ing strong and gaining 42 of his total 143 yards up the middle. The Wilddogs gained some yardage, but were primarily contained to the middle of the field and never threatened to score. The battle continued into the second quarter with Chung and fullback Keldyn Ahlstedt gaining yards up the middle and control- ling the play. The offence broke through for the first major from Chung after a sustained 14-play drive. Kicker Roynelle Meredith was good on the point after to give the Dolphins a 7-0 lead. The Dolphins’ defence showed why they are considered so fear- some by forcing Brampton to four plays and a loss of 11 yards before giving the ball back to the Dol- phins’ offence. The offence was quick to capitalize and led by quarterback Mike Stobbart and some great play calling by the coaching staff gained yardage up the middle, before a quarterback sneak and bootleg by Stobbart to the outside put another six points on the board to close the half with the ’phins up by 13-0. Brampton received the kickoff to open the third quarter and tried to pound the ball up the middle. The Dolphins, however, were not going to allow that with the defensive front line gaining access to their backfield and forcing their quar- terback to scramble but gain few yards. On offence, the trio of Ahl- stedt, Chung and Stobbart, under the protection of a solid offensive line, continued to move the ball deeper into the Wilddogs’ zone. The Dolphins stopped a Bramp- ton offensive series to open the fourth quarter as linebacker Luke Eskins intercepted an errant pass and provided a 36-yard return to give the Dolphins good field posi- tion. The offence continued to drive the ball with a 40-yard run by Stob- bart, who was given room due to a great block by Marco Mertsis. The series ended after 10 plays with the Dolphins coming up short on a fourth-and-short first-down at- tempt. Brampton’s only points came late in the fourth, with less than two minutes to play and the quar- terback scrambling and tossing a Hail Mary pass that caught the defense pinching and resulted in a 75-yard run for the TD. Brampton’s onside kick attempt was quickly recovered by the Dol- phins’ special teams unit allowing the offence to come on and take a knee to kill the clock and take the win. The blow was great, the shock severe, we little thought his death so near, Only those that have lost can tell the sorrow of parting without farewell. What I’d give if I could say ’Hello Dad’ in the same old way, To hear your voice, see your smile, to sit with you and chat awhile. So you who have a father, cherish him with care, For you’ll never know the heartache until you see his vacant chair. Daddy, if you could all go back, to talk to you, to see you smile, To bug you once again, would be the greatest gift from God That I could ever receive,‘cause I still fi nd it hard to face, The fact you had to leave. We who love you, sadly miss you, as it dawns another year, In our lonely hours of thinking, thoughts of you are ever near. It only takes a little space To write how much we miss you But it will take the rest of our lives To forget the day we lost you. An understanding heart, an intelligent mind We miss you Dad, you were one of a kind. The tears in my eyes I can wipe away, The ache in my heart will always stay. They say memories are golden Well, maybe that is true, But we never wanted memories We only wanted you. Life seemed to mean so much before It’s not important anymore. The strength to face the daily tasks Till I am with you is all I ask.
