For their ef- forts, Laura and Evan nominated their respective friends to be the Big Sister and Big Brother of the year. Laura put forward her Big Sister Judy White. In reading her submis- sion as to why Ms. White should receive the honour, Laura said, “Judy’s taught me a lot of things, like how to make green pancakes. “She helped me get over my fears, like when I had to sleepover at her house (for the first time),” Laura added. Evan said of his Big Brother Ken Graham, “He’s one of my best friends.” In an interview, Evan said Mr. Graham should receive the hon- our because “he’s been a Big Brother for long enough to win one of these.” The honours were handed out by the Big Brothers and Sisters of Ajax-Pickering Tuesday evening in a ceremony held at the Verid- ian Corporation headquarters in Pickering, attended by about 40 people. “It’s a pleasure to spend time together,” Ms. White said in ac- cepting the award. “We have a lot a lot of fun. It’s one of the best deci- sions I’ve ever made in my life (to become a Big Sister).” Evan is the third Little Brother for Mr. Graham. Mr. Graham noted one Little Brother had graduated from the program and “I hope to gradu- ate another. It’s nice to see Little Brothers become sure of them- selves, to become better people.” Laura said in an interview that Ms. White is “a good person to me. She helps me whenever I’m sad. She cheers me up when I don’t feel good.” “Laura is a wonderful Little Sis Available at the following Bell stores: Pickering Town Centre (Lower level Sears wing) 905 837-1212 Whitby Mall (Next to Staples) 905 725-1212 Offer ends June 17, 2007. Fulfilling a pledge she made to her father, Jack Moore, in the final weeks of his battle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Ms. Moore will, next weekend, con- tinue her efforts to raise awareness sur- rounding the fatal disease, as well as raise funds for research towards a cure. Over the past two years, Ms. Moore has followed through on that vow, hosting a pair of fundraising concerts in her father’s honour at Palmer Park in Port Perry that garnered about $8,000 for the ALS society. Plans were beginning to come together for a third concert fundraiser until Ms. Moore realized that no one had stepped forward to organize and host the annual ‘Walk For ALS’ in Durham Region. “I was starting to plan the concert for this year and I went to the ALS website because I thought about (participating in the Durham walk) and there was nothing listed,” says Ms. Moore. After e-mailing the agency to double- check that no event was slated for Durham, Ms. Moore decided to step forward. “I figured if I could organize a concert or two, I could do this,” she says. As a result, Port Perry will play host to the 2007 ‘Walk For ALS’ on June 16, where they will take a leisurely five-kilometre stroll through Port Perry’s historic, northern neighbourhoods. Those interested can find a pledge form online or make a donation over the Internet at www.als.ca/events/mysite.aspx?fid=1130. Registration for the event will take place at the Port Perry Fairgrounds, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The walk will start at 10:30 a.m. For more information, call Ms. Moore at 905-985-7194. But on June 9, it made its last official sale, leaving only five businesses in Brougham. When Edgar Lightle opened Brougham Hardware in 1988, the village was vibrant, with about 20 to 30 businesses and farms in the area, according to his wife, Dianne (who owned the former Becker’s conve- nience store next door at the time). She said at least 155 homes were in the village, and now about 50 remain. “It was a busy area,” she said. “It’s changed. Anyone who lived here in the 70s and 80s notices a big difference.” The building itself was built in the 1840s, and has served as a temperance hall and a case tractor dealership, as well as a hard- ware store under previous owners. Mr. Ligh- tle chose to open the store after working for General Motors for 34 years, having worked at a hardware store as a teenager. “I thought I’d give it a whirl,” he said. “It’s just like riding a bicycle.” The store didn’t only sell hardware; it was also the local post office, served coffee and lunch, and Mr. Lightle repaired small engines, fit screens and cut glass. But Mrs. Lightle said most of all it provided a “drop-in centre” for locals, especially seniors. “We’ve had a lot of local people, and people from Claremont, and Whitevale and Greenwood,” she said. “They all stop and have a coffee and come in once a day pretty well.” Mrs. Lightle said she hoped someone would take over the business. However since it’s located on the airport lands, business owners have to sign a one-year lease. She said since people were hesitant to invest a lot of money in a business that could close down in a year, no one has bought it. The fact that the store is on airport lands is not the reason Mr. and Mrs. Lightle are clos- ing their business. In fact, Mr. Lightle said the government treated them well when it came to repairs. “I can’t fault the government as far as treating us fairly in most senses,” Mrs. Ligh- tle said. “We’ve just kind of been forgotten as far as Pickering’s concerned, and all of the municipalities.” She also mentioned shopping has changed drastically since Sunday openings and the introduction of box stores. At 70, Mr. Lightle simply decided it’s time to quit. He also mentioned with the intro- duction of Hwy. 407, the drivers who used to stop by for a break just keep going. “The only ones you get are the local people and there’s less and less of them,” he said. As for local reaction, Mrs. Lightle said “they’re just as lost as we are.” Local resident Fran Foster said the store will be missed, and she hopes it won’t be destroyed. “The whole community is feeling the impact of this,” she said. “It was a meeting place.” Mr. Lightle said he’s not really sad about the end, but it gives him a funny feeling to think he won’t have to get up early for work each day. “I’ll kind of miss some of the people that came in. I’d talk to them,” he said. “They gave me a break from doing stuff out in the back.” Mrs. Lightle said it will be hard to walk out on the last day. “It’ll be good in a sense, but I’ll probably be standing here in the corner wondering what to do in July,” she said. The store is filled with memories for the couple and their daughter, Tracey. Mrs. Lightle said one day, some men walked in and called it “their own Corner Gas” since they could sit down with people in the store and get an opinion on just about anything. “I think our fondest memory will be all of the good friends we’ve had here because we have lived here 12 hours a day pretty well for the past 26 years,” she said, referring to her time in Brougham between the convenience and hardware stores. “We have a lot of good friends and a lot of good memories.” A retirement party will take place at the Brougham Hall (3545 Brock Rd.) on Sunday, June 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. Light refreshments will be served and food or desert to share would be appreciated. For more informa- tion, call Jane at 905-683-4060. No injuries were reported in the collision, which occurred around 6:38 a.m. June 8, but the two eastbound lanes were expected to stay closed for several hours, accord- ing to Constable Julia McCuaig, media officer for the Ontario Provincial Police’s provincial communications office, around 9:45 a.m. Friday. The tractor trailer’s cab re- mained upright, but its trailer flipped on its side, she said. The lanes were blocked while debris and food cargo were cleared. “So it’s quite a clean up opera- tion,” said Const. McCuaig. The crash’s cause is being in- vestigated. When I’m down, she makes me smile. We bake, paint and walk the dogs. It’s a lot of fun being a Big Sister.” Laura and Evan’s mother, Debbie Pirozzo, spoke of the positive influence Ms. White and Mr. Graham have had on her children. Laura’s mother Debbie Pirozzo said when her daughter first began meeting with her Big Sister, “it was difficult for me to embrace.” But, Ms. Pirozzo has developed a friendship with Ms. White and it’s “al- lowed Laura to interact with another woman outside of our family.” The relationship “is so much fun and so helpful for Laura. Over the past few years, Laura looks forward to spending time with Judy.” Ms. Pirozzo said having a Big Brother for Evan “made it possible for Evan to experience the friendship of a grown man. Evan always looks forward to spending time with Ken. It will help Evan through the teen years. I couldn’t ask for a better Big Brother for my son.” “We have lots of Littles, but not enough Bigs,” association president Neville White noted. “It’s a problem in all our organizations, we’re not attract- ing enough male volunteers.” Mr. Graham said of being a Big Brother, “If I can help him become a better person by being a part of his life and an example for his life, then that’s what it is.” The association is always looking for more Big Brothers and Mr. Graham stated, “It’s important to get involved right out of high school and university. “It’s something that augments your life and gives you a little more focus,” he said. “Rather than just dealing with your own day-to-day life, you have other people to care about, to worry about, other people to do things with. “It’s also important because there are so many of these kids who need someone to hang around with and be an example for,” Mr. Graham stated. The association also handed out the Mentor of the Year award, and it was given to Joe Marks, who wasn’t able to attend. Marion Mills, a caseworker with the association, read the submis- sion from Zachary, who nominated Mr. Marks for the award. Ms. Mills said mentors spend one hour a week with their mentee. “Joe is the best mentor I’ve ever had. My mentor has taught me lots of stuff, like when I didn’t know what decision to make and he taught me how to spell lots of words,” Zachary wrote. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Getting to the root of the problem P olicing style to discover cause of crime If you do the same thing over and over again and expect a different result, you’re bound to fail. That truism could be part of the thinking that has gone into an intense new program, called Problem-Oriented Policing, which seeks to go well beyond the classic catch the bad guys method of detection and apprehension. According to Durham Deputy Police Chief Chuck Mercer, problem-oriented policing is an extension of community polic- ing which attempts to discover the root issues behind incidents in an attempt to prevent repeat calls. In other words, deal with the symptoms, not just the results. Problem-oriented policing attempts to work with the stake- holders who are affected by crime. For instance, the ongoing issue of student rowdyism that has plagued north Oshawa neighbourhoods adjacent to Durham College and the Univer- sity of Ontario Institute of Technology, can be a perfect place to put the program in place. Officers would work with students, college officials, area homeowners and others to prevent the various problems that bring officers to the area for repeat complaint calls. In the past few years, officers have done twice-a-year campaigns where they inform students about liquor laws, noise complaints and other matters. They then take part in an enforcement cam- paign and charge violators. But cops admit the solution is only temporary. As Sergeant Peter Keegan of Oshawa’s Community Response Team says, “We’re nipping at the problem but we’re not getting to the root of the problem.” Problem-oriented policing would go that step further and try, as much as possible, to prevent student rowdyism from reach- ing a level where homeowners are impacted and where police need to be called to deal with problems. That requires intense work and a long-term approach. And the real key to making problem-oriented policing suc- cessful is to make it part of the curriculum as Superintendant Greg Mills has indicated. If the methodology is taught to all young recruits it will only be a matter of time before it is second nature for all officers. And that can only mean a more efficient, effective force and a safer society. Let’s keep at sustainable development To the editor: When are people at the local level and politicians going to take solid action against developers paving over valuable farm land? We in Ontario should be capitalizing on the rich temperate soils of this land that don’t require irrigation. In other parts of the world rivers are running dry due to the changing climate, re- quiring damming and water diversion that greatly detracts from the hydrological environment that wildlife would otherwise use for their own survival. The global population is growing and needs food. We have the potential to meet that demand without destroying the envi- ronment, clear-cutting land or mass irrigation. We should count ourselves lucky! I fear the public’s lust for over-priced houses and malls (because fat-cat developers tell us that’s what we need) will contribute locally to our inevitable great displeasure and ill-health. We need to clearly define what sustainable development is; stop arguing about it so that we can all progress with this most vital issue and move forward with it. Let’s save this most beauti- ful planet. Jamie Crosmas Oshawa High Canadian dollar at the root of manufacturing crisis H ere we are again heading into the hot summer months with a manufacturing crisis on our hands. It was the same story last year as Dur- ham Region auto manufacturers were facing similar uncertainty: will GM Os- hawa be awarded the Camaro and save thousands of jobs or will the plants be phased out and devastate the local economy? The mood was quite somber after the often-tense negotiations between General Motors and the Canadian Auto Workers union over a revised contract that would give the plant a cost advan- tage when bidding for the muscle car. And of course the joy was great when, in August, the car was awarded to Osha- wa. It was good news for all the feeder plants that will manufacture the parts for the new flex line. But it appears the pendulum has swung once again. The feeder plants and those who work for them are slowly coming to the realization those negotiations between GM and the CAW were a harbinger of things to come. The sector is changing and manu- facturers are feeling the pressure to cut costs at, well, any cost. Plants are closing, manufacturers are downsizing and workers with 15 to 20 years seniority are being given the pink slip. At the root of the problem is the high Canadian dollar, which is sitting at more than 94 cents U.S. The loonie has increased in value by 50 per cent in just over four years, mak- ing it necessary for those who export to the U.S. to increase efficiency signifi- cantly. GM will be asking for cost cuts from its suppliers. It’s suppliers will, in turn, be asking the unions for ways to cut costs. It is the same story as last year. But this time, the workers are revolt- ing. The union is demanding an end to the cuts and concessions. It wants to protect the wages and pensions that are the backbone of the auto manufactur- ing sector. For those who want to keep some form of job security, the consequences are high. What the future holds for manufac- turing is anyone’s guess, but rest as- sured the coming summer months are going to be interesting. THE NEWS ADVERTISER, June 10, 2007 PAGE 7 A/Pdurhamregion.com More money raised for Durham charities and educational institutions DURHAM — The Durham Region Chairman’s Charity Golf Classic had another successful year, raising funds for charities and educational institu- tions this year. The sold-out tournament, which took place on June 7 at Deer Creek Golf Club and Banquet Facility in Ajax, raised $452,500. Last year’s tourna- ment raised $490,350. Mr. Anderson said he’s happy the tournament raises funds for the Abili- ties Centre Durham, Durham College, the University Of Ontario Institute for Technology and the Junior Achieve- ment of Durham Region program. “They put about 15,000 or 16,000 students through JA (Junior Achievement) programs as a result of the tournament each year,” he said. The program pro- vides tools for Durham youths between 11 and 18 to gain the confidence and skills to develop in school and life. Another major goal of the tourna- ment, he explained, is to raise money to build the Abilities Centre, which will benefit youth and adults with physical disabilities by providing facilities to ac- commodate them. “We’re hoping to raise enough money to build one,” he said. The centre would provide recre- ational, social and educational ac- tivities, services and programs. Land situated adjacent to the Iroquois Park Sports complex in Whitby has been set aside for the future 72,000-square-foot centre. Mr. Anderson said the success of the tournament is a result of the “great golf committee” and sponsors. “They do a phenomenal job and it’s nice to see them continue to show their support,” he said. After a summer spent chas- ing butterflies, swimming, working or just plain lazing about, Labour Day rolls around and hundreds of thousands of students file back into their schools - ready for a new year. Or are they? A teacher friend of mine tells me that, “We have to allow at least a month for everyone to get settled and back in a learning mood. But by mid October most kids are back to speed.” According to my calculations, this would mean that from July 1, through at least October 15, many students are not focused or at their best. “For some three and a half months, learning can be haphazard to say the least.” says Robert Primrose a Grade 10 teacher. In fact, it may even be worse than that. Think about your child’s learning experiences in June each year. Tests, exams, field trips and other events consume much of that month’s schedule adding up to another month to the let down period. Considering that the average school year includes only 200 days of instruction and that many are spent in less than ideal condi- tions, we soon see why many schools struggle to meet the educa- tional expectations of parents and society. What can we do to help? Easy. Help your kids stay sharp over the summer holiday and there will be no let down - no big gap in the fall. Kids who are focused and ready in September, will learn, integrate and understand new material right away. This will allow them to make the most of each school day instead of only a fraction of them. There are many ways to help kids remain on top of their school skills. Make sure that your children read during the summer. Even if they have a busy social life or a part or full time job, make sure that they take time each day to read. Set up brief study periods at least every oth- er day. Times when your child can review the worst or hardest subjects, read ahead into next year’s material and organize for next year. However, possibly the best way to help students stay sharp is through supplemental education programs. Good summer programs, such as those at Oxford Learning, keep those thinking, reading, writing, math and study skills sharp and ready for September. “It’s not so much the memorized material that students forget over the summer,” says Dr. Pete Gamlin of Ontrio’s Institute for Studies in Education. “It’s learning How to Learn that gets forgotten each summer. That’s because it is seldom taught independent of school subjects. Students who develop good learning and thinking skills will be ready for success in September. Attending a study session over the summer at Oxford is the best way I know of over- coming the summer let-down.” Oxford Learning is Canada’s leading provider of supplemental and enrichment education services. They will design an individu- alized learning program for each child to keep them sharp over the summer and get a head start on next year. Help your child enjoy learning this summer and return to school in September with improved skills and greater confidence. Call Oxford today In Pickering (905) 420-3141 or Ajax (905) 683-6660 to learn how they can help your child get caught up or reach ahead this summer and receive a free guide to summer learning activities called ‘Feeding Active Minds.’ Staying Sharp All Summer Education ADVERTISING FEATURE Blaisdale Montessori School 12 months - grade 8 est. 1969 OPEN HOUSE DATESOPEN HOUSE DATES 2006 Platinum 905-509-5005 www.blaisdale.com AJAX Village Campus 56 Old Kingston Rd. Representatives from the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) made a presentation to the Durham District School Board’s standing commit- tee June 4. Although the program is spread widely across the U.S., it’s look- ing for more pilot schools in Canada, heard those at- tending the meeting. “CATCH is such an easy program, it’s one of those programs where you look at it and say why isn’t that being implemented every- where, it’s so easy,” said pre- senter Barbara McCormack. The program is intended to promote physical fitness and good eating habits. “Young people are ad- dicted to many things that are square,” said Ms. Mc- Cormack, listing video games, TV, cell phones, as well as physical inactivity. She also talked about the cost of obesity to the health care system and increasing rates of Type 2 diabetes. Currently there are about 20 after-school programs at YMCAs in Canada and one after-school CATCH pro- gram in a Durham school, she said. Across North America, there’s probably 1.5 million children who use the program, which is compatible with things they already do in school, said Ms. McCormack. The CATCH program is divided into physical edu- cation, which includes les- sons and home letters, child nutrition, classroom, fam- ily, and physical education equipment. It also has an evaluation that goes with it, said Ms. McCormack. She said often other things fail because there’s no evalua- tion component with them, such as is absent with the Daily Physical Activity pro- gram in Ontario schools. So far, it’s just for children up to Grade 8. Ms. McCor- mack said many children in the program go home and tell their parents about what they should be eating. Oshawa Trustee Michael Barrett said he’s noticed a lot of research has been done for the CATCH pro- gram and asked who has helped. Ms. McCormack said they received funding from federal U.S. health as- sociations, U.S. diabetes as- sociations, and other large funding bodies. She added every lesson, every recipe, every activity has been built into the research. In Houston and El Paso, the program’s cost ranged from $10 to $25 per child, she said. “That would become a very serious issue for a board of this size,” said Pickering Trustee Sherry Croteau, standing commit- tee chairman, regarding the $10 price. Trustee Croteau added the curriculum is mandated by Ontario. “Perhaps it would be something you’d need to go into discussion with the provincial government for some kind of provincial roll- out,” said Trustee Croteau. Ms. McCormack said they are already doing so, and thanked her. Coldwater fetes curling champs with celebration Community leaves no stone unturned to honour Howard, Pickering’s Hart and teammates By Mike Dodd Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING — Even before Glenn Howard and his world cham- pionship curling team motored into Coldwater last Saturday, civic pride was showing. At both ends of the community of 1,400, brand new entrance signs proudly proclaimed they were the home of Team Glenn Howard, World Curling Champions. “I never saw that. I’ll have to check that out,” said Howard, the skip of the 2007 world men’s cham- pionship team. Saturday afternoon, more than 500 local residents and curling devotees kicked off the community party of their own, when they paid tribute to their very own world curling championship team. During a celebration that spanned well over four hours, Team Glenn Howard was honoured at the Coldwater and District Curling Club for their 2007 win in April at the Ford Men’s World Curling Championships in Edmonton. “Wow, this is incredible,” said Howard, as he spoke to the crowd that assembled on the playing surface at the seven-year-old curl- ing facility. Howard was joined on stage by fellow team members Craig Savill, Pickering’s Richard Hart, Brent Laing and coach Scott Taylor. All received armfuls of certifi- cates and congratulations from a multitude of dignitaries from across the Georgian Bay region. In his speech, Howard offered thanks for all the support provided by family members, sponsors, curl- ing fans and members of the Cold- water curling club. “This is indeed a proud and historic day for our curling club,” said Coldwater and District Curl- ing Club president Wayne Strange- ways, noting the club only opened its doors to members seven years ago. The size of the Coldwater crowd impressed veteran TSN curling commentator Vic Rauter, who served as the master of ceremo- nies. “Having been recently to the Brier in Hamilton, this is a louder crowd than we had at many of the draws,” quipped Rauter. Part of the broadcasting crew that covered the 2007 world finals in Edmonton, Rauter has covered the sport for 20 years in Cana- da, Prior to taking to the podium, Rauter took time to speak about the curling clinic Team Howard put on in Edmonton. “They (Team Howard) were good at the Brier in Hamilton and later at the worlds in Edmonton. We may never see that kind of per- formance again. With the team members curling at over 90 per cent, that may be the best curl- ing performance by a team and individuals ever in the sport,” said Rauter. Fred Temple represented the Canadian Curling Association at Saturday’s gathering, taking time to present the team with their Brier and world championship banners. Temple went on to note the team compiled an impressive 35-3 re- cord, en route to their world cham- pionship win. Barry Macklin from the Ontario Curling Association presented the team with their 2007 provincial championship banner, noting the team went 66-6 in play during the 2006-2007 season. “The only question is how did they lose the six?” quipped Mack- lin. Assisted by Coldwater and Dis- trict Curling Club junior members Amy Miller and Craig Balkwill, Howard, Hart and Savill individu- ally raised the three championship banners to the roof of the curling rink. Howard’s two children, Scott and Carly, later unveiled the team portrait, with the four members holding the world championship trophy and their medals. Coldwater native and Simcoe North MPP Garfield Dunlop was clearly the most excited of all the politicians on hand, gushing with pride. “I can’t tell you how proud I am of our community and these group of guys. No one in the world today but Coldwater can say they are home to a world championship mens’ curling team,” said Dunlop. In his brief speech, Dunlop thought back to a golf tournament held in Coldwater eight years ago, attended by Russ Howard, Glenn’s brother. “Who would have thought we could build a curling club out of a public works building out be- hind the arena and seven years later we’re now home to the world champions. That is fantastic,” said Dunlop. Simcoe North MP Bruce Stan- ton also congratulated the team on their global victory. “I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to stand in the House of Commons and bring such noto- riety to one of the great communi- ties in Simcoe North (Coldwater) and tell everyone about the great curling team that hails from his great community. I can’t tell you how proud I was to do that,” said Stanton. Midland Mayor Jim Downer and Midland Curling Club president George Dixon were among those making presentations to Midland native Glenn Howard and the rest of the team. Other local dignitaries were also on hand to offer con- gratulations. photo courtesy of Mike Dodd/ Orillia Today Glenn Howard, Pickering’s Richard Hart, Craig Savill, Brent Laing and Scott Taylor display their world, Canadian and Ontario championship banners at the Coldwater and District Curling Club. That simple question is at the heart of a new philosophy of polic- ing that was the subject of an intense symposium hosted recently by Dur- ham Regional Police. Problem Ori- ented Policing encourages officers to seek out the root issues behind incidents with a view to preventing repeat calls that plague communi- ties and drain police resources. “It’s a policing philosophy -- it’s an extension of community polic- ing,” said Deputy Chief Chuck Mer- cier, who was on hand at the Police Learning Centre at Durham College as the two-week course, attended by cops from across the country, wound up last Friday. The deputy chief said the ap- proach involves exercising critical thinking to determine what’s at the heart of an incident -- it may be a runaway child, a noise complaint in a student neighborhood or drugs and prostitution in the inner city -- and work with stakeholders, such as community members, service pro- viders, relatives and others to ad- dress the cause and prevent repeat incidents. “You’re looking at solutions but you’re not dealing with a solution in one dimension,” Deputy Chief Mercier said. “Today we respond to many calls just tactically. But a lot of times by working together, we can eliminate the extra workload of continuing calls. “It may be a very simple solution or it may be a very complex solu- tion.” The input of stakeholders is es- sential to problem-oriented polic- ing because many of the issues pe- ripheral to a police call aren’t law enforcement matters, said Sergeant Peter Keegan of Oshawa’s Commu- nity Response Unit. He cited as an example the ongoing problem with student rowdyism in north Oshawa. In the past Durham cops have car- ried out twice-a-year campaigns in which they attempt to inform students about liquor laws, noise complaints and other issues, then launch an enforcement campaign to charge people for infractions. “At the end of those three weeks we’ve got quite a lot of charges, then we go away,” Sgt. Keegan said. “We’re nipping at the problem but we’re not getting to the root of the problem.” But bringing more stakeholders, such as students, college officials, area homeowners and others to the table can help prevent conflicts from arising, he said. The model is applicable to law and order issues throughout the community, Sgt. Keegan said. Want to know what’s happening in Pickering? BE INFORMED! It’s a Mo- bile Showroom which just may be the only one in Canada. “The day is gone when you carried some brochures and a sample window to a customer’s home,” explains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired North York Mobile Library truck and installed interior walls along with all of my window samples.” When you call Durham Windows and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne will show up at your door with his Mobile Showroom which you’ll enter by way of a sliding patio door. Inside, displayed on the walls, are the Vinyl Window Designs series of vinyl windows which you’re free to operate and you’ll discover the many special features including how they can be cleaned with- out going outside. “After being in this business for 26 years, I can honestly say these are the fi nest windows on the market,” says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed to reduce air leakage and come with heavy duty hardware.” All Vinyl Window Designs windows come with Low E Glass which fi lters out the ultraviolet rays keeping your home cooler in the summer and eliminate fad- ing of your curtains, drapes and furniture. All of the windows come with a life- time warranty on the frame, hardware and glass. Wayne would also like his custom- ers to know that he does all of the esti- mates personally, eliminating the cost of a salesperson. Durham Windows and Doors also does all of its own installations, which ensures that every customer gets a high quality job done at the best possible price.
