So, the Pickering resident got rid of her old fridge and replaced it with a new energy-efficient model. She also replaced her timer lights with new energy-efficient ones, un- plugged her water cooler and pur- chased an energy-efficient furnace. The goal was to get Pickering households, work- places, neighbourhood associa- tions, schools and places of worship involved in reducing energy con- sumption. Durham Sustain Ability hits savings target By Kristen Calis kcalis@durhamregion.com PICKERING — A couple of City councillors want to see seniors ex- empted from the education por- tion of property taxes. At the April 2 council meeting, Ward 3 City Councillor David Pick- les and Ward 2 City Councillor Doug Dickerson said they would like to see this idea considered on a provincial level. Coun. Pickles said the break would give seniors an average sav- ings of 25 per cent from the resi- dential tax bill. He said they would continue to pay the regional and City portions of their taxes, but “after 50 years, maybe enough’s enough (of the education por- tion).” He noted many seniors on fixed incomes often ask him how long they have to pay education taxes. He suggests gradually reducing the tax percentage once seniors reach a certain age, eventually phasing it out. Coun. Dickerson said he has been interested in the tax break since the early 1990s. “O nce (seniors) reach what was the mandatory retirement age of 65, they should stop paying that portion of residential taxes,” he said in an interview. Coun. Dickerson said people at the age of 65 usually haven’t at- tended school for 40 to 45 years. By the time they reach 65, he said they probably have paid more than their share in taxes for educa- tion purposes, since most people spend about 15 years in school. He emphasized that this wouldn’t save money or create revenue for the City or the region; it would simply save seniors that 25 per cent. Although Coun. Dickerson raised this in 1990, it didn’t take off. He explained seniors probably had more disposable income at the time. Now, he said, in terms of real purchasing power, that dis- posable money has decreased. “$1,300 buys now what $800 bought then,” he said. Coun. Dickerson believes the tax break would be beneficial for WHAT COULD THIS BE? If the government relieves seniors of the 25 per cent, he figures they’ll be economically self-sufficient longer into their years. Coun. Pickles agrees and said “if you decrease the tax, it will help them with increasing costs (such as utilities).” Coun. Dickerson realizes this topic will be debated for many reasons. He said baby boomers will benefit most from this because he doesn’t see the tax break in place for at least another three years. He said an argument could be funding problems for future genera- tions. But, he believes the provincial government should be able to make up that extra 25 per cent through funds from downloading. Ideally, he said the funding should come from the Prov- ince, taxpayers under 65 and general revenue. The tax break would have to be done on the provincial level and Coun. Dick- erson explained it could be done one of two ways: through the minister of education or a private member’s bill. Coun. Pickles suggested a tax rebate. Coun. Pickles said he’d like to start talking to seniors along with Coun. Dickerson to get some feedback on the idea. DSA executive director Angela Wheeler called the project a huge success. The 300 participants who took the online pledge promised to take energy- reducing actions that will result in 11 per cent energy savings over the next six months. It means saving $118,000 or 1,169,925 kilowatt hours, and preventing the release of 253 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, She said they are working to continue the project in Pickering with plans to expand throughout Durham. “A bout one per cent of the popula- tion (of Pickering) participated,” she said. “We’d like to see it reach at least 10 per cent.” Through online surveys, Ms. Wheeler said they found most people did low- cost or no-cost actions such as turning off lights when not in use and changing five high-use light bulbs to compact fluo- rescent ones. Of the medium to high-cost actions, she said people seemed the most inter- ested in a solar-assisted water heating system. Ms. Brook-Allred said she saves on a high-energy consuming appliance by almost never using her clothes dryer. In- stead, she uses a clothesline. She and her husband even purchased a clothesline for her daughter when she got married. Ms. Wheeler said DSA would like more businesses to get involved, and plans to expand the project will be drawn up in the coming weeks. Canada, as a whole, is pre- dicted to experience growth of 2.5 per cent in 2007 and three per cent in 2008. QUOTABLE “Weaker commodity prices and a stabilized Cana- dian dollar will help boost the province’s economic growth to two per cent in 2007. A fuller recovery is anticipated for 2008 as growth should return to a healthy pace of 3.1 per cent.” Craig Wright, VP and chief economist, RBC. TRENDset Note “Nationally, the January number was 4.4 per cent lower than for the same month a year earlier. All provinces and territories showed declines over the 12- month period, with the largest decreases occurring in Alberta, Yu k on and British Columbia.” The Daily, Statistics Canada. Employment insurance An estimated 484,330 Ca- nadians were receiving regular employment insurance benefits in the first month of 2007, a decrease of 0.2 per cent from December 2006. The payments totalled $719.2 million. In Ontario, 129,900 resi- dents received regular EI pay- ments in January 2007, up by 2.2 per cent from December, but down 1.5 per cent from the same month a year earlier. The number of regular ben- eficiaries in Canada overall is on a downturn. In the last five years the number of people receiving EI payments on a consistent basis has fallen by almost 15 per cent. Source: The Daily, Statistics Canada DURHAM — It is often referred to as the Silicon Valley of India. Located in the southern portion of the country, Bangalore is a city of more than six million residents. With technology firms taking root in the metropolis, the city is the driving force behind India’s push for information-technology dominance. Home to multination- al companies like IBM, Bangalore is currently responsible for 35 per cent of the country’s software ex- ports. But Bangalore’s allure doesn’t end with IT. It is also a centre of manufacturing for heavy indus- tries, such as aerospace, and it has been attracting research in the fields of biotechnology and ap- plied science. As the densely-populated city becomes increasingly important to India’s booming future, more in- dustry is popping up. According to the Greater Toronto Marketing Al- liance, which visits the country on an annual basis to secure business partnerships, foreign investment in Bangalore was the third highest among any Indian metropolis. Its economy is estimated to be worth $47.2 billion, making it a major economic centre in India. It is this growing city that Leah Myers made her top priority when she visited India this past Decem- ber. “I spent a lot of time there look- ing for potential opportunities,” the president of Durham College said. And what she found was a wealth of opportunity just waiting to be explored. India’s economic boom has left the nation in a skills conundrum. With the annual economy grow- ing at an unprecedented pace, the country is developing faster than it can train its people -- leaving a skills shortage that is threatening to slow economic de- velopment. Bangalore alone creates thou- sands of jobs each month, absorb- ing many of the highly-trained employees leaving the country’s many educational institu- tions. John Jung, the vice- president of international marketing for the GTMA, says that over the years he has observed a decrease in the level of service of- fered by employees at hotels and restaurants as skilled workers are absorbed up the job chain. “I’ve noticed the difference my- self just from one year to the next,” he said. “Skilled workers are in short supply. It is very obvious.” But what is a skills dilemma for India is an opportunity for Cana- da, says Yuen Pau Woo, the presi- dent and co-CEO of Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. Speaking to a group of business delegates gathered in Toronto for the India Business Forum, put on by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Woo said Canadi- an educational institutions are not yet taking full advantage of India’s need for skills training. In 2003, only 2,565 Indian stu- dents studied in Canada, a low number when compared to the nearly 80,000 students who went to the United States and more than 17,000 in Australia. By not pursuing more oppor- tunities with India, Mr. Woo says Canada is missing out. India offers a wealth of knowledge and Cana- dian institutions can gain as much as give by creating strong cross- cultural educational partnerships. “It’s not simply about getting bodies to fill the seats in lecture halls,” he added. *** Ms. Myers smiles when she recalls the sights and sounds of India. “It is clearly a very different place than Canada. Everything from the streets of New Dehli to the hustle and bustle to the weather to the fragrances in the air,” she said. “And traffic. Traf- fic is unbelievable. We don’t know anything about traffic here.” Although it was her first trip to India, Ms. Myers wasn’t there sim- ply for pleasure. She visited India as part of a mission with Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty to lay the groundwork for potential part- nerships between the province and the fast-growing nation. “It was a whirlwind of a tour,” she said of the business mission that included delegates from vari- ous sectors of Ontario, including a strong representation from the province’s post-secondary institu- tions. Focusing mainly on Bangalore and New Delhi, Ms. Myers found much need in those cities for what Durham College has to offer. “What I found in India is that they have a big post-secondary sector. You drive down the streets and there’s an institute of this and a college of that and a university of this -- it’s quite vast, as you would expect in such a populous coun- try,” she said. But industry complains that after the very top tier of educa- tional institutions -- “the really top level, world-recognized schools” -- the quality of the universities and colleges is quite variable. “As a result there’s a real dis- connect -- except at the very elite tier -- between what industry is looking for in terms of graduates with practical skills, with skills that translate very quickly into the job market and what the post-second- ary sector is offering,” she said. The result is that graduates aren’t employable, forcing compa- nies to spend the first six-to-eight months training their newly-ac- quired employees to be capable of handling the work that needs to be done. After they are trained, however, many will move on and the company has to start from scratch. Enter Durham College. “What we really pride ourselves on and what our record indicates is that we are very good at re- sponding to the needs of industry,” Ms. Myers said. After establishing some very positive relationships on her trip, Ms. Myers says agreements be- tween India and the college are in the works that will help at least some employers overcome this co- nundrum. “We are still working through the details of some of the agree- ments, but I hope to be able to announce them shortly,” she said. And while Ms. Myers is excited about being able to expand the reach of Durham College into India, she says the biggest benefit will come to the students. “Inevitably there will be a stu- dent aspect to this. Depending on how it takes shape, I do think there will be very tangible benefits for faculty and students,” she said. “The way I think about it is that more and more we live in a global marketplace and I think the oppor- tunity to establish an international profile for Durham College is very, very valuable for everyone.” TakingTaking the lead Inside India a two-part series A skills shortage in India creates opportunity for Durham College By Izabela Jaroszynski Number of regular beneficiaries To tal of regular benefits paid January 2007 484,330 December 2006 485,170 January 2006 506,400 Per cent change, January 2006 -January 2007: -4.4 per cent ($ millions) January 2007 719.2 December 2006 702.6 January 2006 685.9 Per cent change, January 2006- January 2007: 4.9 per cent durhamregion.comP PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, APRIL 15, 2007 EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR NEWS ADVERTISER Metroland Durham Region Media Group Tim Whittaker, Publisher Joanne Burghardt, Editor-in-Chief Mike Johnston, Managing Editor Duncan Fletcher, Director of Advertising Andrea McFater, Retail Advertising Manager Eddie Kolodziejcak, Classified Advertising Abe Fakhourie, Distribution Manager Lillian Hook, Office Manager Cheryl Haines, Composing Manager Janice O’Neil, Composing Manager [ Contact us ]-- News/Sales 905-683-5110; Clas- sifieds 905-683-0707; Distribution 905-683-5117; News Fax 905-683- 0386; General Fax 905-683-7363; E-mail mjohnston@durhamregion. com; Mailing Address; 130 Com- mercial Ave., Ajax, Ont. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com We all win when we buy local At the beginning of April the Durham Region Farm Con- nection 2007 was staged at Brooklin’s Vipond Memorial Arena. Its message was simple -- raise awareness about agriculture. While more than 600 students attended the three-day event it’s a topic more adults should give attention to because agricul- ture is the second largest industry in Durham Region. The au- tomotive industry may be No. 1 and it helps drive our economy but the agricultural industry feeds us. Courtice resident Mary Ann Found told This Week that ex- posing children to agriculture allows them to have more influ- ence with their parents’ purchasing decisions. It’s these adults who do the family grocery shopping so asking them to shop locally is of vital importance if our area farmers are to survive. In Durham there are traditional farm types which include dairy and livestock, fruit and vegetables and field crops. There are also other specialty farms which includes sheep and lamb, goat, horse and pony, fur, deer and nursery products. You name it, chances are it’s produced here. Buying fresh, local produce and other grocery products grown and produced here helps support our neighbours. However, the message must be hammered home to more grocery store chains. Too often products from Mexico and other southern cli- mates end up on store shelves when the same things are grown and produced in Durham Region. It’s nice to have strawberries in mid-winter but once summertime arrives those goods should be left where they’re produced, not shipped up to Canada. There are other good reasons for buying local too. Just think about the added benefits to our environment when trucks don’t have to transport goods across North America. That’s a lot of exhaust fumes that won’t be polluting our environment. As well, local plant life produces more oxygen and absorbs carbon dioxide. According to the Ontario Corn Producers As- sociation, a hectare of corn produces enough oxygen in a mid- summer’s day to meet the annual respiratory needs of about 325 people. The Durham Region Farm Connection 2007 is a positive event that sends a positive message to both young and old alike. It’s up to us to heed its message and just do the right thing. Resident calls for audit of council expenses To the editor: Looking at the expenses by Pickering councillors, it would seem they are suspect to say the least, i.e. in terms of the discrep- ancy between who spent the least and who spent the most. Surely this is excessive spending of our scarce tax dollars and no itemized accounting is provided for taxpayers. Imagine if you will a small business giving carte blanche to its staff to spend as much as you wish. The answer is obvious, so surely the time has arrived to call in an independent auditor and, as a taxpayer, I hereby demand an audit be carried out on behalf of all taxpay- ers. I would also suggest that councillors show leadership in terms of cutting waste by not going to the best restaurants or getting the best wine etc. Maybe a better way is to eliminate the plastic expense ac- count card and have councillors pay up front at the time of purchase and then submit receipts to City staff for scrutiny as all companies do. I suggest the expense card is a privilege from taxpayers, but is it being abused? Surely taxpayers have the right to know how our scarce dol- lars are being dispensed. Tom Long Pickering Focus on cleaning more than your workplace or school I t may not quite feel like spring yet, but the sight of the soggy brown ground cluttered with cigarette butts, coffee cups, and water bottles is proof winter has come and gone. The white stuff has melted and out of hibernation comes the debris of lit- terbugs, kept hidden and safe for far too long under a blanket of snow. It’s disgusting what people do when they know they can cover it up with some of the light fluffy stuff - they’ll leave dog poop in the park, turn court- yards into ashtrays, and front lawns and roadways into trash dispensers for ev- erything from chewing gum to candy wrappers. So, on or around April 22, Earth Day 2007, many of us will hit the roadsides and hedges armed with plastic gloves and garbage bags to participate in school or workplace community clean-up proj- ects. Like every other year, most people will walk away afterwards feeling good about themselves and their contribu- tion to the environment, but never again pick up another piece of trash until next year. Maybe it’s time to start thinking about the earth a little more. Litter occurs all year, it’s just especial- ly noticeable after winter. Like sweeping dirt under a rug, the pile has grown significantly over the months it’s been hidden. Why not try setting aside quarterly or even monthly clean up days and spend 10 to 30 minutes for each just walking around, picking up trash. It’s so easy to walk past a chip bag in the park and leave it there, angry that you shouldn’t be the one to pick up someone else’s garbage. It’s understandable to not want to touch another person’s trash – dogs pee on it, bugs get into it, and the person who originally dropped it may not have hygiene as a personal priority. By setting specific time aside through- out the year, people can ensure they’re prepared to face the mess and properly equip themselves with garbage bags and gloves or bags with which to wrap their hands. By making an effort to not only avoid littering, but to also say something to family members or friends caught in the act, and schedule regular community clean ups, you’ll be setting an example for everyone. We may not be able to stop all the world’s polluters, but we can be a good influence on others. People are less likely to drop their gar- bage in an area a neighbourhood keeps clean and takes ownership over. Crystal Crimi’s column ap- pears every third Sunday. E-mail ccrimi@durhamregion.com. All but one trustee attending the April 10 Durham Catholic District School Board meeting voted to add more trustee office space through education centre modifications. “I think it’s exceptionally small and inappropriate myself,” said Oshawa Trustee Fred Jones. Plans for the trustee room were presented after Whitby Trustee Mary Ann Martin, the board’s chairwoman, and Trustee Jones previously men- tioned the cubby box currently pro- vided for an office doesn’t allow for a private conversation. Staff came back to the board with plans to create a seven-foot by 14- foot room for trustees. Next to the area, a seven-foot by seven-foot wait- ing area was proposed as well. Trustee Jones said he doesn’t see the need for a waiting area because there is a reception area and a hall. Although Trustee Martin said she understands why there is a waiting area because of all the interviews which occur at the centre throughout the year, people could wait in the trustee’s room. But, not everyone agreed on the size of the room needed for trustees. “I have a comment about the trust- ee room; I think it’s big enough,” said Oshawa Trustee Joe Corey. “We had 16 trustees and we had a room smaller than that.” Trustee Jones disagreed and said a previous room trustees had was big- ger. He added the room they have now is not used because it’s not accom- modating. The project would be included in the estimated $21,500 cost to modify the senior administration wing. Trustees approved the modifications, but with an amendment to remove the wall between the waiting room and trustee room. In a recorded vote, Trustee Corey voted against the change. durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 8 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, April 15, 2007 4!8 1SPVE4Q P OTPS Restaurant & Ba n q u e t H a l l Restaurant & Ba n q u e t H a l l This Passport includes: • 4 - BUY ONE 18-HOLE GREEN FEE with a power cart rental at regular price, RECEIVE ONE GREEN FEE FREE • 4 - BUY TWO 18-HOLE GREEN FEES at regular price and RECEIVE A POWER CART RENTAL FREE. • 4 - BUY TWO 18-HOLE GREEN FEES and TWO POWER CART RENTAL at regular price and GET TWO GREEN FEES FREE. • 4 - BUY FOUR 18-HOLE GREEN FEES at regular price and GET TWO POWER CART RENTALS FOR FREE. • 4 - BUY ONE BUCKET OF RANGE BALLS and RECEIVE A SECOND BUCKET of equal value FREE. *See descriptions and terms & conditions at www.passporttosavings.ca While supplies last 24 99$ The News Advertiser has acquired terrifi c deals from leading local merchants offering discounts at between 10 and 20 times the original value. Lakeridge Health not sure if new funds will help programs Little known about new money for children and youth mental health services from the Province By Lesley Bovie lbovie@durhamregion.com DURHAM — It’s unclear whether a recent provincial an- nouncement pledging $24.5 mil- lion for children and youth men- tal health services could help save similar programs facing an uncertain future at Lakeridge Health. “We’re working out more of the details of the announcement,” said ministry spokeswoman Tri- cia Edgar in a phone interview. “There will be a regional break- down (of the new funds) and we’ll be providing that informa- tion in the near future.” The announcement made by Mary Anne Chambers, minister of Children and Youth Services, in a April 3 press release prom- ises to “address gaps in local service needs and reduce wait times.” It pledges a five per cent in- crease in base annual funding to child and youth mental health agencies, plus another $4.5 mil- lion in regional annual allocation to address “community priori- ties” in the ministry’s new policy framework for child and youth mental health. Another $2 million annually would enable agencies to pro- vide immediate children’s men- tal health support when faced with an extraordinary crisis and circumstance. What isn’t known at this point is if any of the new funds could help support child and men- tal health services at Lakeridge Health. The hospital was recently di- rected by the Province to stop subsidizing addiction and men- tal health services by about a third or lose out on emergency funding to help balance its oper- ating budget. “We have no information from the ministry,” Lakeridge Health spokesman Arnel Shiratti said, referring to the recent funding announcement. “At this point in time, the direction from the Province still stands.” He pointed out the subsidy amounts to a substantial $2.6 million annually. Officials with both Lakeridge Health and the Central East Local Health Integration Net- work (LHIN) say they’re working together to address the situation. “We welcome all funding,” said Central East LHIN spokes- woman Katie Cronin-Wood. “We look forward to the details of this funding announcement. “The LHIN has made it very clear to Lakeridge health there will be no reduction in addic- tion and children mental health service within the (Central East) LHIN.” The child, youth and fam- ily program at Lakeridge Health consists of crisis intervention, in- patient treatment and outpatient therapy. Regardless of reassurances from the LHIN, advocates for the program worry families will have to travel great distances to get help. They point to the vastness of the Central East LHIN, which is made up of five different re- gions. “We believe it is important for children, youth and families to access supports and services as close to home as possible,” said Ms. Chambers in the release an- nouncing the $24.5 million. At this point, there’s only a hint of a suggestion that Lakeridge Health could benefit from the new funds. The release refers to the announcement building “on previous investments in more than 260 child and youth mental health agencies and 17 hospital- based outpatient programs”. By Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Wheelchairs aren’t the type of sports equipment the Durham Family YMCA usually orders, but the Oshawa facility has a dozen on the way. Later this month, the Durham Y will be launching Y-Knot, a unique program that gives kids with disabilities and their families an opportunity to participate in sports ranging from basketball to swim- ming. “There are a lot of programs out there for children with disabilities, but what sets this apart is the fact that their fami- lies and siblings can play too,” says Phil Cristi, general manager of the Durham Family YMCA. “It levels the playing field for everyone.” Y-Knot will kick off with an open house on Friday, April 27. Kids and their families will have an opportuni- ty to meet staff and try out some of the new equipment purchased for the program. From there, organizers hope to offer Y-Knot activities every Friday night, starting with games in the gym. Aquatic activities will be added in the fall. Y-Knot is the brainchild of marathon swimmer Vicki Keith. In 2001, Ms. Keith partnered with the Kingston YMCA to create a swim team for youth with disabilities dubbed the Kingston Y Penguins Aquatic Club. Their slogan? “Penguins Can Fly” -- a reminder that nothing is impossible. The Kingston program quickly grew to include wheelchair basketball, track and recreational gym activities. Inspired by its success, staff and vol- unteers at the local Y have spent the last six months working to bring Y-Knot to Durham. The biggest challenge has been startup funding for specialized equipment and accessibility renova- tions. Mr. Cristi said McDonald’s restaurants in Oshawa and Clarington have been a huge help, making the Y’s Strong Kids Campaign the charity of choice for 2007 and donating all proceeds from coin boxes. But more funding is still needed to make Y-Knot a success and ensure families without the financial means to buy a Y membership can participate. Organizers are hoping local businesses and service groups will get on board and are also looking for volunteers. The Y-Knot open house is from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Durham Family YMCA at 99 Mary St. N., in Oshawa. For more information, call 905-438- 0822 or visit www.penguinscanfly.ca or www.ymcatoronto.org. Sometime between last Sat- urday night and early Sunday morning, thieves broke into a car in the driveway of the McBride home, in the Pickering Beach Road and Bayly Street area of Ajax. The perpetrators stole gifts and chocolates intended for the family’s children. “On Saturday, I went shop- ping to buy my kids all the things needed for the holiday,” Andrew McBride says. The kids were snooping around, looking for what he bought, so Mr. McBride’s wife put the items in the car. At 4 a.m. on Sunday morning, his wife went to get the gifts and “the car was broken into and all the stuff was gone. We had nothing to give to our children.” The McBrides have four chil- dren, aged 13, 8, 5 and 4. To steal the items, “they have to get in the car first and then search for it. One neighbour had her car opened, but there was nothing to take,” he says. Durham Regional Police was called and the McBrides were told this sort of thing is a fre- quent occurrence. The police in- vestigated, but found nothing. “My oldest daughter was upset and said the police didn’t care,” Mr. McBride states. “She was very upset over the whole thing.” He didn’t want the younger children to get upset, so he headed to Shoppers Drug Mart and bought replacement items. The items were on the floor of the car in the front seat, covered up. Most of the items taken were Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars, along with choc- olates. “They were nowhere near being in sight. My wife thought someone may have seen her put the things in the car. They might have been going from car to car,” he says. Mr. McBride says he walked around the neighbourhood and “I found the ownership for an- other car” on the ground. The ownership papers be- longed to a neighbour across the street. “Now I see how other peo- ple feel when their house gets broken into. It’s surprising, very trying and I feel invaded,” Mr. McBride notes. When asked what he’d say to the perpetrators, Mr. McBride says, “I’ll plead the Fifth (Amend- ment). Stealing from children is inhumane.” Want to know what’s happening in Pickering? BE INFORMED! The year 2007 marks the club’s 45th anniversary and during this time the continual refi nements to both the golf course and the clubhouse facilities has made the club one of the fi nest in the country. Recently ranking among the top 50 public golf courses in Canada, The Royal Ashburn Golf Club has been quietly building its brand and embracing its Scottish Heritage and over the past several months has made some signifi cant enhancements to both its facility and image. Armorial Bearings (Coat of Arms) On September 15, 2006, The Royal Ashburn Golf Club received the honour of a Grant of Armorial Bearings. Granted to the club by the authority vested in the Governor General to exercise the prerogative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, the new Grant of Arms refl ects the signifi cant achievements of the Royal Ashburn. The Grant of Arms was administered through the Canadian Heraldic Authority, Rideau Hall, Ottawa. Royal Ashburn was represented by the Lord of Wrentnall. The Grant of Arms marks a signifi cant milestone in the 45 year history of the club. The Royal Ashburn Tartan During the spring of 2005 we decided to design a Royal Ashburn Ta r tan in recognition of both the club and the founding families Scottish Heritage. In the months that followed Wilson Paterson, the clubs founder, visited the Lochcarron Mill in Scotland and with their guidance developed the Royal Ashburn Ta r tan. Offi cially the Tartan is the Royal Ashburn Tartan and is registered in the Historical Index in Scotland. The Tartan is worn by our serving staff at the club as well as by our starter who wears a Kilt ever y day. The Royal Ashburn Cairn A Cairn is a Scottish monument built only with stones. The history of a Cairn dates back to the 18th century and was built to represent signifi cant battles that had been won and to mark signifi cant events. Behind the green overlooking the 14th fairway a dry stone Cairn has been built to commemorate His Royal Highness the Prince Andrew, KG, KCVO, ADC(P), Duke of York, who was the guest of honour at The Royal Ashburn on September 20, 1999. The Royal Ashburn Cairn is the largest known dry stone cairn in Canada, and was built by Dry Stone Masons without the use of mortar. It is 11.5 ft. high, weighs 22.9 tons, has a diameter of 10 ft. at the bottom and 5.7 ft. at the top with a volume of 552.8 cu. ft. Surrounded by beautiful gardens, the cairn is a restful and refl ective spot to enjoy a warm summer’s moment. RA Golf New for spring 2007, The Royal Ashburn Golf Club is proud to introduce its premium line of branded golf clothing and accessories. RA Golf is the newest brand in the golf industry, and has been developed by The Royal Ashburn Golf Club. RA Golf will represent the very best in clothing and accessories, but will only be available at The Royal Ashburn. Throughout this inaugural year we will be adding new items to the line with all products carrying the spectacular new brand. Come in and see RA Golf, and see what the future looks like. New Tee Decks With many golf courses in the business trying to add length to their golf course we are taking a different approach. During the fall of 2006 we built 8 new tee decks that will shorten the length of the course. We recognize that the game of golf can be very discouraging for novice golfers and it is important to create a golf course that everyone can enjoy. The new forward tees will shorten the golf course to 5016 yards and will offer women, juniors and the more novice golfer the opportunity to enjoy Royal Ashburn. Ta r tan Patio Built last spring, the Tartan Patio opened on July 1, 2006. The 2400 square foot patio overlooks the beautiful gardens as well as the golf course and provides the perfect setting for our patrons to enjoy a cool drink or a bite to eat. 1000 Second Line Scugog Port Perry, ON. 905-985-9888905-985-9888 1-888-477-98881-888-477-9888 •• Panoramic Views Panoramic Views •• Rolling Fairways Rolling Fairways •• Bent Grass Greens & Tees • Power Carts Bent Grass Greens & Tees • Power Carts •• Driving Range Driving Range •• Restaurant Restaurant •• Patio Patio •• Banquet Hall Banquet Hall • • Lic. Durham College golfer places eighth at World University Golf Championships in Italy WHITBY -- A championship round of golf consists of 18 holes, which for Whitby’s Will Mitchell, wasn’t such a good thing. Mitchell would have preferred to eliminate the final three holes at the Circolo Golf Club in Tu r in, Italy, where he was taking part in the World University Golf Championships. Although he managed to fin- ish eighth best in the world, the results would have been much more impressive for Mitchell if he hadn’t shot a four-round combined total of plus-11 on the final three holes. “Sometimes, there are just some holes that don’t look good, and for me, those were the ones,” said Mitchell, admit- ting that his late-hole struggles were just in his head. “I finished the opening round with three straight double bogeys and that was that.” Despite the struggles, the event and experi- ence of golfing at such a high level was an over- all positive experience for Mitchell. “The atmosphere was just amazing,” said the Durham College golfer of teeing up in Italy. “And although I had those struggles, if you break it down, I shot a combined 17-under on the first 15 holes, and it gave me confidence to know that even after shooting the way I did on the last few, that I was still one of the best in the world. It’s nice to know my game is there.” The defending OCAA individual golf cham- pion got better as the tournament wore on. Fol- lowing his opening round 78, Mitchell carded rounds of 69-66-69, which gave him a four round total of 282, six-under par. His round of 66 was the second lowest posted by any golfer at the event, bested only by a sec- ond-round 64 from eventual gold medallist Yuta Ikeda of Japan. Mitchell’s 282 led Team Canada in scoring and also helped lead the Canadian contingent to a solid fourth place finish in the world (853 total), just two strokes behind bronze medallists Great Britain. Japan won the gold medal with a four-round team total of 841 while the United States took the silver at 847. Mitchell qualified for the event in June after finishing in the top-5 at the Royal Canadi- an Golf Association Canadian University-College National Championships in Thornhill. Through the early-going of the OCAA golf season last fall, Mitchell brought all the positives from his experience in Italy back to Durham with him. He tied for the top individual score as the Lords hosted and won the annual DC Invita- tional at Lakeridge Links. Mitchell’s 73 helped the Lords collect a team total of 299, five strokes ahead of Humber No. 2, to win the event. Coming off his OCAA championship in 2005, and the good start to the 2006 season, plenty was expected of the second-year star, which is something he welcomed with open arms. Will Mitchell ‘The atmosphere was just amazing.’ Will Mitchell OSHAWA -- How fitting, that the winner of the 2006 Investor’s Group Ontario Men’s Amateur Golf Cham- pionship had the last name Parr. That would be Parr as in Andrew Parr, of London. A second straight 67 lifted Parr to a six shot victory over the rest of the field at the 84th annual tournament that was hosted by the Oshawa Golf Club. Parr finished with a four round total of 270 (72-64-67-67) to finish ahead of Kevin Blue of Don Mills, who completed the tournament at minus-8 (70-70-68-68). “I really enjoyed myself,” said Parr. “To play against such a competitive field and come out on top is a great feeling.” The golf course played extremely tough throughout the week, with only four golfers managing to finish under par. Among the local players, David Ar- nold of Brooklin provided the best result, finishing in a tie for 21st over- all with rounds of 71-74-77-73. Fol- lowing close behind were J.C. Beec- roft of Newcastle who tied for 29th (75-76-79-69) and Oshawa’s Dustin Wetherup, who finished tied for 36th (71-76-78-76). But when the news came that the Eastdale Collegiate grad signed on with the University of Akron on a golf scholarship, that chip shot has turned into a long drive. Patte, who for a couple of years had been hoping and crossing his fingers that a scholarship would be in his future, is thrilled to be the newest member of the Zips golf program. “It was just gratifying and almost a relief,” says Patte, of inking the schol- arship deal. “(Not just) for me, (but) for everyone. I’ve wanted it for so long and so many people have been sup- portive and have wanted it as well. So I have (a sense) of relief and just satisfaction that I finally achieved my goal.” To achieve such a high level of suc- cess in any aspect of life, a great sup- port system generally needs to be in place, and for Patte, that has been no different. From friends and family, to teach- ers and coaches, Patte says so many people have been a positive influence on his golf career to this point, yet one name stands out in the group. “My coach Stan Kolesnik,” he says, without hesitation. “Stan has been ex- tremely influential along the way and helped me in so many ways.” Most kids are unable to reach such a high level of success without support from their parents either, a fact clearly not lost on Patte. “They have always been there for me, encouraging me and supporting Mission accomplished for Jake Patte Walter Passarella / Metroland Durham Region Media Group OSHAWA -- Port Perry’s Addi McLaren putts out on the eighth hole during the CPGA Women’s Championship at the Os- hawa Golf Club. It should come as no surprise that Patte looked at that as the possible highlight of his summer. “So many people told me, if you don’t mind, I am going to come out and watch. Of course, I said yeah, the more the merrier.” Just the simple thought of playing such a prestigious event in his own back yard almost seemed surreal. “Just being able to play on my home course and the fact that there is going to be a tremendous amount of support for me,” he says. “There was a little, maybe, added pressure that way, but that’s alright with me.” When Jake Patte made the choice to let the other sports fade into the back- ground in favour of golf, he nailed a hole-in-one with that swing. The former LPGA touring pro has penned a weekly column for a few years, offering area golfers and duffers an opportunity to improve their game. Or, at the very least, be entertained by her weekly comments and stories. “The whole idea came about from the stories I have to tell,” says Mund- inger of how the original concept of submitting a weekly golf column was Mundinger has shared her wisdom with readers hatched. “I think it has had a good response.” Indeed it has. In addition to offering helpful advice, Mundinger has noticed over time that people appreciate the ad- vice, but often ask about her personal life when she is out and about. A sure sign that a rapport is build- ing between her and the readership. “I was at an open house at Wooden Sticks and peo- ple were coming up to me and asking me about my curling,” she says with a laugh. Indeed, when area cours- es are covered in snow, Mundinger moves indoors to pursue her passion for curling. On the links, Munding- er is a seasoned pro. A lengthy career on the LPGA tour began in 1985. These days, you can find Mundinger on the driving range at Wooden Sticks in Uxbridge, meeting and greeting golf- ers before they head out for a round. Her most common piece of advice? Follow the proper swing path and light- en the grip. “The path that the club takes going back and through dictates the flight of the ball,” she notes. “Most golfers have a common grip problem. I just tell them to relax.” What sets Mundinger apart from the rest is her experience as a touring pro, and the fact that she has played in so many pro-ams throughout her career. Jordan Oudyk turned in an impres- sive performance, winning the 2006 Ontario Bantam Boys’ Championship at Puslinch Lake Golf Club. Oudyk, an Oshawa resident playing for the fourth straight year at the event, can now move up to the next level as a champion after carding a two-under-par 68 in the final round, to go along with an even 70 the day before. He put on a putting clinic on the back nine to win the title by three strokes. On the 13th hole, he dropped a 25-foot downhill put to save par to begin what would turn into one of the greatest finishes in the history of the event. Knights light up Flames in OHF opener By Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com AJAX — So far, so good for the Ajax Knights juveniles at the Ontar- io Hockey Federation ‘AAA’ cham- pionships. The OMHA-champion Knights rolled to a solid 6-0 shutout victory over the Northern Ontario cham- pion North End Flames of Thunder Bay at the Ajax Community Centre on Friday morning. The Ajax juveniles, the hosts of the OHF championships, were to play their second game against the Greater Toronto Hockey League Humberview Huskies on Friday night. The result wasn’t available at press time. Knights’ head coach Tony O’Brien was impressed with his charges’ thorough victory over Thunder Bay, which made an 18-hour bus trek to get to the OHF championships. “We wanted to go get the first one under our belts, especially since we were playing a team we’ve never seen before. I thought we struggled to capitalize on our opportunities in the first period. But, we had a big third period with four goals to put it away.” But, O’Brien cautioned that his teams needs to ramp up the inten- sity even further in their remain- ing round-robin games in order to qualify for the semifinals to be played this morning (Sunday) at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. “To be successful, we’re going to have to play a little better. We’re going to have to play extremely well to win, but we’re going to take it one game at a time.” Shifty forward Kyle Tate netted a natural hat trick to pace the of- fensive attack, scoring late in the second period to give the Knights a 2-0 lead, and then added two more markers within a minute of each other to give his squad a comfort- able 4-0 cushion. “Kyle’s one of our top players. We certainly rely on him to generate a lot of our offence,” says O’Brien. At the defensive end, goalie Christian Gaudette was at the top of his game, making several key saves before giving way to back-up goaltender, call-up Garret Hudson, at the 12-minute mark in the third period, who went the rest of the way. “Gaudette had a big game for us. He made a big stop on a breakaway that could have been the turning point in the game.” Stephen Budai, Tyler Ritchie and Mitch Earle also scored for Ajax. A/P PAGE 22 NEWS ADVERTISER, SUNDAY EDITION, April 15, 2007 www.durhamregion.com Sea Lamprey Control Centre Centre de Lutte Contre la Lamproie Marine Public Notice Avis public April 2007 The Sea Lamprey Control Centre, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), proposes to treat approximately 17 km of the Rouge River with the lampricide TFM to reduce the numbers of larval sea lamprey. Lampricide will be applied for approximately 12 hours from designated application points as noted on the accompanying map. Treatment of the area will be conducted on or about April 19, 2007. The lampricide selectively kills lamprey larvae and may also cause mortality to other fish if under stress of spawning, or weakened by disease or other environmental factors. Although the lampricide is not harmful to humans or other animals at the concentrations used during the treatment, any use of stream water for irrigation and drinking should be suspended for a 24 hour period during this treatment period. avril 2007 Le centre de lutte contre la lamproie marine de Pêches et Océans Canada (MPO), propose de traiter environ 17 km de la rivière Rouge avec le lampricide TFM afin de réduire le nombre de larves de lamproie marine. The Canadian Cancer Society extends a heartfelt thank you to its volunteers in honour of National Volunteer Week, April 15 to 21, who use their cancer-fi ghting powers every day to make a difference in the lives of people affected by cancer in Durham Region. “Our volunteers truly are at the centre of it all - it’s thanks to their dedication, that we’re positively impacting the lives of people who have been touched by cancer in our community,” says Dan Robert, Volunteer Development Coordinator, Durham Region Unit. “The Canadian Cancer Society would not be able to provide support programs and services or fund life-saving cancer research without the support of our volunteers. It’s because of their tireless efforts that we are leading the way in the fi ght against cancer.” Over the last year, Canadian Cancer Society volunteers in Durham Region have helped ensure no one face cancer alone. Here are just a few of the ways: • 150 volunteers drove 900 people living with cancer to medical appointments, accumulating almost 200,000 kms. • Over 500 volunteers helped out at special events to raise money for life-saving research and community support services Robert adds, “Our volunteers embody our core values ñ they have integrity, they are caring, they have courage and they are progressive. These values are at the heart of all their actions and their efforts are making a real difference in the lives of people touched by cancer in our community.” All Canadian Cancer Society volunteers are invited to drop by the Whitby offi ce on Wednesday afternoon to pick up a token of our appreciation! To join the Canadian Cancer Societyís dedicated team of volunteers, call 1 800 668-7830, e-mail drobert@ontario.cancer.ca or visit our website at www.cancer.ca. A symbol of leadership and vitality, the tree represents a society that grows by drawing equally on the strength and diversity of volunteer activities. It clearly expresses the dynamic leadership and the mission of volun- teer organizations. This image reinforced the idea of solidarity and dynamic action by highlighting all the unsuspected richness that is hidden “under the tree”, and mirrors the true but seldom noticed importance of volunteering. An overtime marker midway through the first extra frame gave the Panthers a 3-2 victory over a strong Cooksville Phan- toms squad. The victory marked an unbeaten tournament for the Pickering atoms. The Panthers advanced to the semi- final with a first-place finish during round-robin play. Facing the Toronto Royals, the game was exciting and didn’t produce a winner in regulation or overtime, and was called with a 2- 2 tie. A second semi-final game was played the next night and was just as exciting, with the Panthers winning by a close 3-2 score. Cooksville defeated the Hillcrest Summits in the other semifinal. The Pickering atoms won the six- game, round-robin portion of the tournament with a 4-0-2 record. The tournament started with a 4-1 vic- tory over the Markham Islanders. The second game of the tournament pro- duced the first tie, 1-1, with the To- ronto Eagles. Call-up Joseph Aucoin helped out the team in this game and the next, a 4-4 draw with Cooksville. Next up was a close 3-2 victory over the Hillcrest Summits, with the win- ner being scored with 14 seconds left in the game. Call-up Cory Ross and Aucoin were called upon during the March Break 5-2 victory over the To- ronto Royals. The Willowdale Black- hawks lost 5-0 to the Panthers to finish round-robin action. Next up for the Panthers is a Pickering Panthers ‘A’ Tournament over the Easter weekend, to finish off a good season for the group of 10 and 11 year olds. In other tournaments this season, the Panthers lost in the final of the Hillcrest Earlybird, won the bronze medal at Lake Placid, New York in November and lost in the semifinals at the Ajax Christmas Tournament and the Toronto Penguins tournament.
