Secular Ontario wrote to council last November asking that it dis- continue the practice of opening meetings with the prayer. Council, after much debate, voted 21-4 in favour of tweaking its meeting process and policy so the Lord’s Prayer is recited prior to the official opening of council. The Regional chairman now in- vites those in attendance to take part, if they choose. The group sent a letter to coun- cil in response to its choice. “Is it the intent of this decision that if anyone present objects, the prayer will not be recited? Or does it mean that those who do not wish to take part may absent themselves during the prayer,” Henry Beissel asks. “If it is the lat- ter case, our legal advisor informs us that what you are proposing is at best an artful dodge.” Mr. Beissel, the president of Sec- MPP’s private member’s bill passes second reading By Erin Hatfield ehatfield@durhamregion.com TORONTO — A bill that would mean the direct election of Dur- ham’s Regional chairman passed second reading at Queen’s Park Thursday afternoon. “The way many of the Liber- als were speaking I thought they were going to whip it,” said Osha- wa MPP Jerry Ouellette minutes after the vote. “But, I went over, talked to the minister (of municipal affairs and housing) and he said they had free reign to vote how they want- ed.” Bill 172, an Act to amend the Municipal Act, 2001 to Provide for the Direct Election of the Dur- ham Regional Council chairman, was introduced by Mr. Ouellette in December 2006. During the debate at Queen’s Park on April 5, Mr. Ouellette said he tried to dispel concerns that a large municipality would control a direct election. “In Waterloo the chair is a per- son from one of the small town- ships,” he said. He also addressed concerns about the potential cost of run- ning for the Region’s top spot. “I gave figures from last term which indicated that the most money spent was half of what we can spend as an MPP,” he said. Those who rose to support Mr. Ouellette’s bill included Joyce Savoline, MPP for Burlington. Ms. Savoline previously served as the Halton Region chairwoman, the first time the top spot at an Ontario regional government was directly elected. “When she spoke she tried to dispel a lot of the concerns,” Mr. Ouellette said. “A lot of it is con- cern over party politics and she dispelled that.” Speaking out against the bill was Scarborough Centre MPP THEY HAVE THE SPIRIT AJ Groen / News Advertiser photo PICKERING — It was Spirit Day at William Dunbar Public School on Thursday with students showing support for the Toronto Blue Jays. He goes on to say that should the Region refuse to abide by the law, legal action will be taken. But, at its meeting on March 28, Regional council received the letter without discussion. In an interview, Regional chairman Roger Anderson said the debate is closed. “We dealt with it earlier,” Mr. Ander- son said. “They want to do something about it they can I guess, but council has dealt with it. We have made our decision.” Brad Duguid and Scarborough-Rouge River MPP Bas Balkissoon. Northumberland MPP Lou Rinaldi said he supported the idea, but not the bill because it is specific to Dur- ham. “Where I have a challenge with this is, I wish the member would have broadened this bill so it’s not just for Durham,” he said. “I think we should have talked about all two-tier levels of municipal (government) because I really believe what’s good for one should be good for the other.” Mr. Ouellette introduced the bill at Queen’s Park on Dec. 12 after the results of a referendum question on the election ballots in Ajax, Pickering and Oshawa overwhelmingly sup- ported direct election. At present, Durham Regional councillors choose the chairman. On Feb. 14 Regional council voted 15 to 13 to endorse Bill 172 and Mr. Ouellette said that endorsement like- ly made a difference in the vote at Queen’s Park. “I just think this is a good way of moving forward in democracy,” he said. This is just one step in a long pro- cess, according to Durham’s current chairman, Roger Anderson “It is a private member’s bill and it doesn’t mean anything until it gets third reading,” Mr. Anderson said. “It certainly wouldn’t mean anything until 2010 if it gets passed. It is just another step in the process and needs another few steps until it goes any- where.” The bill has been referred to the general government committee, which gives municipalities an oppor- tunity to voice concerns. Should the bill receive royal assent, direct election of the chairman would begin in 2010. ✦ Anderson from page 1 Anderson says prayer debate is over ✦ MPP from page 1 MPP says bill moves democracy ‘forward’ Just one more way to get your news thanks to the PICKERING NEWS A DVERTISER newsdurhamregion.com W WINDOW & DOOR REPAIR AND SERVICE CENTRE DD YOUR SOURCE FOR QUALITY PRODUCTS AND PROFESSIONAL SERVICE since 1996 Showroom & Shop: 31 Barr Road, #5 905-426-6788 www.windowrepair.ca New Custom Windows or just the Right Parts. Miss Jensen will be sharing the stage with Queen Elizabeth II when she recites the Commitment to Remember as part of the mon- ument’s rededication ceremony this Monday. “It pretty much says we’ll re- member the soldiers and we won’t forget,” she explains. The poem is short and Miss Jen- sen has already done a fine job of memorizing the piece: “They were young, as we were young,” She begins with a timid smile. “They served, giving freely among themselves. “To them we pledge amid the winds of time to carry their torch, and never forget. We will remember them.” The 15-year-old history student is part of more than 3,000 students making the pilgrimage to Vimy Ridge on its 90th anniversary. But that doesn’t even start to give you a picture of how many people will be there. It’s been said that prime min- ister Stephen Harper and others, dignitaries from the world over, will be in attendance. That’s enough to test the stron- gest of nerves, Miss Jenson agrees. “There’s going to be so many people there,” Miss Jensen said. “The queen will be right there so it’s kinda a big deal.” She doesn’t know if there will be time to actually meet Her Majesty. “The lady I spoke to told me to keep my fingers crossed so, we’ll see,” she said. “She’ll have to do all of her queenly duties first.” Miss Jensen is still working out what she’ll say if she meets the Queen. “It’s an honour to meet you?” she suggests. “I don’t know.” The students, including hun- dreds from high schools across Durham Region, left Wednesday headed for Europe and will be in France at Vimy on Monday, April 9, for the ceremony. Crackdown on drug activity results in 36 arrests DURHAM — A four-week crack- down on illegal activity around high schools and plazas has result- ed in 36 arrests and the seizure of more than $30,000 worth of drugs. Durham police launched the project in early March in response to complaints about drug activity in plazas and areas surrounding schools. Police targeted drug deal- ers and buyers, laying charges for trafficking and possession, as well as numerous breaches of bail or- ders. Police laid 56 charges against 36 individuals and seized street drugs value at $34,475. Durham cops have vowed to continue with similar enforcement campaigns in the future. Rebecca Jensen will recite a poem during the Vimy Ridge ceremony Monday. durhamregion.comA/P PAGE 4 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, APRIL 8, 2007 EDITORIAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR NEWS ADVERTISER Metroland Durham Region Media Group Tim Whittaker, Publisher Joanne Burghardt, Editor-in-Chief Mike Johnston, Managing Editor Duncan Fletcher, Director of Advertising Andrea McFater, Retail Advertising Manager Eddie Kolodziejcak, Classified Advertising Abe Fakhourie, Distribution Manager Lillian Hook, Office Manager Cheryl Haines, Composing Manager Janice O’Neil, Composing Manager [ Contact us ]-- News/Sales 905-683-5110; Clas- sifieds 905-683-0707; Distribution 905-683-5117; News Fax 905-683- 0386; General Fax 905-683-7363; E-mail mjohnston@durhamregion. com; Mailing Address; 130 Com- mercial Ave., Ajax, Ont. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS durhamregion.com Vimy Ridge forged Canadian identity I t was a key battle in what was supposed to be the war to end all wars. While July 1 is the day we celebrate our nation’s birth, many would suggest it was April 9, 1917, when Canada re- ally became a country. For on that fateful Easter Monday, beginning at the crack of dawn, thousands of Canadian troops under cover of an incredible hail of shell fire, climbed out of their trenches and marched onward and, eventually, up and over Vimy Ridge. Those brave soldiers, 3,600 of whom were killed in the battle, were under Canadian command for the very first time in the Great War and achieved what no other allied army could. They took Vimy Ridge, a key strategic point along the dug-in trenches and which had been under Ger- man control for years. The outpouring of Canadian pride in the achievements of our troops was intense indeed and led to international rec- ognition that Canada had arrived on the world stage. Vimy Ridge set the stage for a new relationship between Canada and Great Britain and eventually led to a distinct Canadian identity, foreign policy and status as one of the world’s im- portant countries. It was that sacrifice in battle exactly 90 years ago that helped forge our identity. All these years later, at the base of the magnificent memo- rial at Vimy, some 3,600 Canadians, including hundreds of students from this area, are honouring the sacrifice of those troops. The ceremony, which is reminiscent of the moving tribute paid to our troops three years ago to recall the 60th anniversary of the D-Day efforts of the Second World War, is timely indeed. It recognizes and brings home what our soldiers had to go through and the ultimate price that was paid for our freedom. It also shows a new generation, far removed from the horrors of nine decades ago, that Cana- dians will fight for what they believe in. Perhaps, most importantly, remembrance of war and battles like Vimy Ridge, hopefully provide the impetus to the leaders of tomorrow to work to avoid the bloodshed of the past. It is by looking back that we can struggle toward a better future. May the soldiers who fought and died, rest in peace and may we always remember them. Windy conditions affect blue box waste To the editor: As the snow melts, the amount of garbage everywhere is appalling. On windy days, blue-box collection is a problem. I went out today and picked up two large green bags of waste -- it is apparent the vast majority is paper, plastic and cans. I have spoken with Durham Region as this garbage is from overflowing blue boxes. They told me one company had pro- posed an elasticized netting but the Region turned it down. I believe elastic netting or a snap cover on blue boxes, eas- ily removed for the benefit of the collectors, would save huge sums of money. The cost of picking up this recyclable waste is huge. The image is horrible. Also, in many states incarcerated men and women are used to pick up garbage. It is healthy they get out in numer- ous aspects and clearly beneficial to the esthetics. Yes, unions will complain, but so be it. John Garvin Courtice Durham could take lesson from Leaf Rapids, Manitoba I am a glutton for CDs. I can barely make it a week without buying three or four discs. I like to saunter over to the used CD store on my lunch hour and see what new tunes they have in stock. But, my favourite thing about this little used CD store is that the clerk al- ways asks me, “do you need a bag?” My answer is always no. I carry a big purse, perfect for stuffing note pads, tape recorders and my much-coveted CDs. You see, in my world there is no place for the plastic bag. Maybe I should consider relocating to Leaf Rapids, Manitoba, where on April 2 a ban on the flimsy bags took effect. Or maybe, in its wisdom, the Region of Durham will consider following suit. How long is the life of a plastic bag? Te n minutes maybe - the time it takes you to get from the store to your home. Environmental groups estimate that $500 billion to $1 trillion of the bags are used worldwide each year. What a waste. They are made of petroleum products, they take 1,000 years to bio- degrade and, more often than not, they end up as landfill or on the side of the road. Society recognizes that plastic bags are wasteful, that’s why people save them and reuse them. These bags often end up as kitchen catchers, but wouldn’t it be better if we just didn’t have them at all? Alas, we are children of convenience, with a whatever-makes-my-life-easiest mentality and, unfortunately, because of this, the plastic bag lives on. Durham and its residents are doing so much in terms of wise waste man- agement, diverting waste from landfill through the blue box and green bin programs. But, plastic bags are a major glitch in the effort. A truly integrated approach to waste management begins with residents and industry creating as little waste as pos- sible. Banning plastic bags would cut back on the amount of waste we create. Leaf Rapids officials say their law will help the environment by keeping the bags out of the landfill, save the town money in cleanup costs and protect the town’s image as an “international fish- ing destination.” Apart from the fishing thing, a ban on plastic bags would have the same positive benefits here. It’s something for our municipal officials to consider. Until that time comes, may I suggest we all buy a few cloth bags and use those instead. Erin Hatfield’s column ap- pears every third Sunday. After all, you’ll find hundreds of names representing academic excel- lence at the high schools which par- ticipated this year. To g ain entry in this exclusive club, the young men and women had to achieve an average of 80 per cent in any combination of ministry- approved courses that represent six credits. In other words, it required hours upon hours of commitment in the classroom and in studying at home. It’s wonderful to be able to salute such academic excellence, and to shine a deserving light on these hard-working students. Because, rest assured, many of these young men and women fea- tured today are no doubt our leaders of tomorrow. The amount of grant that your child is eligible to receive is based on the net family income and then it’s deposited directly into your child’s Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP). Net family income amounts are updated every year de- pending on infl ation. Here’s the breakdown: • If your net family income is below $36,378, the Canada Education Savings Grant will give you 40 cents for every dol- lar on the fi rst $500 you save in your child’s RESP each year. If you save more than $500, you will get 20 cents for every extra dollar, up to a maximum of $2,000. • If your net family income is between $36,378 and $72,756, the Canada Education Savings Grant will give you 30 cents for ev- ery dollar on the fi rst $500 you save in your child’s RESP each year. If you save more than $500, you will get 20 cents for every ex- tra dollar, up to a maximum of $2,000. No matter what your net family income is, the grant provides at least 20 cents for ev- ery dollar on the fi rst $2,000 of annual RESP savings made on behalf of a child. If you make $2,000 in RESP contributions in one year, you will receive between $400 and $500 in CESG (depending on your family income). Asthma doesn’t take a holiday, but by being aware and prepared, the disease should not stand in your way of a great get-a-way. “The climate can defi nitely affect your asthma.” Says Chris Haromy, Certifi ed Asthma Educator with The Lung Association. “It’s important to keep your asthma under control so that you can lead a normal, active life that can include vacations away from home.” Here are some tips to help you en- joy a healthy holiday: 1. Ask your doctor for an Asthma Action Plan in case you have problems while you are away. Con- tinue your medication as prescribed while on vaca- tion, even if your symp- toms improve. 2. Take a supply of medication to last the length of your holiday. 3. Travel can expose you to new asthma trig- gers, so always keep your medication with you. Warm, tropical areas can be humid and ideal for molds and pollens, while in colder climates brisk, cold air can also be a trig- ger. 4. If you are traveling by plane, carry all of your medications with you in case your luggage gets lost. 5. If you are traveling outside of Canada, ask your pharmacist for a printout of your medications in case you are questioned at customs. 6. Always keep your medications in their original containers. 7. If you are using a compressor to take your medications, make sure that the country you are visiting has the same electrical voltage as Canada’s. If not, speak to your supplier where you bought your compressor. 8. If you are traveling outside of Canada, make sure that you have medi- cal insurance in case of an emergency. To learn more about asthma, visit The Lung Association’s website at www.on.lung.ca, or call the toll-free Asthma Action Helpline at 1-800-668- 7682 to speak to a Certifi ed Asthma Educator, or to order free materials, including The New Asthma Action Handbook. But is napping for everyone? The Better Sleep Council Canada advises that if you regularly have trouble fall- ing or staying asleep at night, you should not be taking a nap during the day. But for others, napping can help regain alertness, enhance productiv- ity, and reduce the stress of our busy days. To nap, or not to nap? That is the question. If you’re considering making nap time part of your daily routine, The Better Sleep Council Canada recom- mends you to keep these tips in mind: • You can reduce the impact of the mid-day slump by going out for a brisk walk in the fresh air and drink- ing plenty of water to keep hydrated. • Get enough sleep - adults need about eight hours sleep per night. Make the necessary changes to ensure you get a better night’s sleep. • If you choose to nap, keep them to 15-30 minutes. Longer naps al- low your body to slip into deep sleep, making it diffi cult to wake and leav- ing you with a groggy feeling when you do awake. • If there’s no way around it and you know you need more than 30 minutes of naptime, try sleeping for an hour and a half to complete a sleep cycle. • Avoid napping in the late after- noon - you’ll have diffi culty falling asleep at night and it will shift your biological clock, making waking up the next morning diffi cult. • If you feel you need a nap, but can’t fall asleep, just enjoy the down time and relax - your body is still re- storing energy. For more useful information about naps and sleeping, please visit better- sleep.ca. By Stuart Foxman (NC)-Every year, this spring activity puts thousands of Canadians on the shelf with sprains, strains, and assorted aches and pains. Golf? Baseball? No: spring cleaning. Tidying up your home and yard? All that bending, lifting, climbing and stretching can pose a threat, says the Canadian Ortho- paedic Foundation - especially if you don’t take the proper precautions. “Spring cleaning can fl are up underly- ing conditions, or cause other injuries, not just because it’s physically demanding, but because it’s something you don’t do regu- larly,” says Dr. Doug Kayler, a Winnipeg orthopaedic surgeon. He says back spasms, wrist and shoulder strains, and microtears of muscles and liga- ments are all real concerns. To prevent such mishaps, the Canadian Orthopaedic Foun- dation offers these tips. • Don’t overdo it. The basement didn’t get fi lled with clutter overnight, so you don’t have to clean it all in one day. Pace yourself, especially if you’ve been rela- tively inactive during the winter. Get help moving heavy objects. And avoid what Dr. Kayler calls the “lazy man’s load”, where you carry too much to avoid an extra trip. “You can easily strain something, or lose your footing and fall,” he says. • Use proper techniques when bending or lifting - keep feet shoulder-width apart, bend at the knees, keep stomach muscles tight, lift with your leg muscles, and keep objects close to your body. • When you have to reach that top shelf, use a step stool instead of a chair or couch. If you’re using a ladder, ensure it’s on a fi rm and level surface; in the spring, the ground outside can be soft or wet. • Even simple movements can cause in- jury. Stay aware of repetitive motions - like stacking boxes or raking - and take breaks. Instead of over-reaching or twisting your body awkwardly, stop and move closer to the task at hand. While you’re getting your house in shape, spring is also a perfect opportunity to get your body in shape, adds Dr. Kayler. “Do a physical assessment,” he says. “What’s the state of your joints? What’s your fi tness level? Are your shoulders and knees wearing out? Spring is a great time to commit to being active and mobile.” More information on keeping your bones and joints healthy is available online at www.canorth.org. Ontario’s Environment Minister Lau- rel Broten announced the conditions after Ajax officials complained the Duf- fins Creek Water Pollution Control Plant is contributing to contamination along the Town’s waterfront, including causing beaches to be closed to swimming every day last summer. The conditions, however, aren’t enough for Jim Robb, with the Rouge Duffins Greenspace Coalition. “Lake Ontario is already stressed. There are a lot of beach closures,” Mr. Robb said, adding the coalition wanted a full individual environmental assessment conducted. “Without the minister doing what’s right, she’s caving in to developers in York Region.” The plant expansion will provide sew- age service for Ajax, Pickering and most of York Region. It’s jointly owned by the two regions and sits just west of Duffins Creek marsh. “By not requiring a full environmental assessment, she’s short-changing Lake Ontario and public health,” Mr. Robb said. The regions had been using a mu- nicipal class environmental assessment process, which is less stringent and takes less time than an individual EA. Last year, after the regions filed an environmental report on the expansion, Ajax asked the environment minister to consider an individual EA. Mayor Steve Parish praised the con- ditions imposed, saying, “The minister took the right tack. “I think on one side, the minister was under heavy pressure from the two re- gions to get the project going. And, de- velopers in York Region were putting on pretty heavy pressure,” he added. Among the conditions are limiting the expanded plant’s capacity to 520 mil- lion litres of effluent a day, lowering the amount of phosphorus that can be dis- charged, developing an odour manage- ment plan and starting a new EA process for the outfall-diffuser pipe. Mayor Parish said the outfall pipe, which carries the effluent from the plant out into the lake, will have to extend further out than the current pipe, which goes about one kilometre. “We see that as all very positive,” Mayor Parish said. “The solution is to take all this phosphorus out into the lake and dis- perse it. We’re pleased with the decision. “We think our efforts will improve the plant and improve water quality” along the Town’s lakefront. The Town has argued that the existing pipe doesn’t go far enough out and the effluent is pushed back to shore. The phosphorus and algae affects the water quality near the shore. “We won’t see results for five years or seven years. I think it’s a good result,” the mayor stated. Mr. Robb disagrees, saying, “Sewage is putting nutrients into the water. Too much phosphorus going into the lake is causing algae.” It in turn attracts gulls and geese, which then pollute the water. “We want the minister to do and still have a faint hope, she’ll reconsider and make York Region look within its own borders,” he said. “The only reason the big pipe is being built is to service York Region.” John Presta, the director of environ- mental services for Durham Region, said “she’s basically denying the request for an independent EA.” The minister, he added, said the “environmental work was sound and we followed the process” re- garding consultations. “There’s nothing there that really sur- prises us,” Mr. Presta stated. Dealing with odour impact “we had committed to that. We’ll do the work to meet the ministry’s requirement for odour control.” As for extending the outfall pipe further out in the lake, “again, we had committed to doing it. She’s saying do it sooner rath- er than later. We don’t have a problem with that.” The plant expansion is being phased, he noted. “It’s going to take a good three to four years to even get the expansion built and then we will have to address the outfall pipe,” he noted. The expansion will cost “in the order of $400 to $500 million.” $%.4!,$%.4!,#%.42%#%.42% -"%2,%! WALK-IN HOURS Daily 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sat. 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. AMBERLEA SHOPPING CENTRE ON WHITES RD. Source: Environics DURHAM -- Madanmohan Chawla is frustrated. The Ajax businessman has been sounding the alarm for years about the opportunities available for local businesses in India and he says no one in Durham wants to listen. “I have been saying India is the place to be for 10 years,” he said. With more than 30 years of professional experience in power systems engineering, project management and busi- ness development, Mr. Chawla helps businesses launch their products and services in inter- national markets. He has been pro-actively pushing India- focused opportunities for years, especially in the energy sector. Having recently handed the reins of his company over to his eldest daughter, Mr. Chawla is now a risk partner and adviser. His business is to link your busi- ness with new opportunities. And opportunities in his native India are abundant, he says. Most recently, Mr. Chawla set his sights on the agriculture sector and he wants to make a documentary highlighting the similarities between Durham’s agri-business and India’s grow- ing farming industry. “How can Durham take advantage of those similari- ties? I don’t know,” he said. “But wouldn’t it be interesting to find out?” Mr. Chawla isn’t alone in his interest in India. The country has steadily been gaining inter- national attention due mainly to its stunning statistics. Currently the 10th largest economy in the world, some forecasters have predicted that if India continues on its path of unprecedented economic growth, it will be fourth by 2025 and third by 2050. It is expected to surpass powerhouse China as the world’s most populous nation in less than 45 years. And it is India’s growing middle class with its huge purchas- ing power that is making the world stop and notice. Accord- ing to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, more than 200 mil- lion people in India are classi- fied as middle class and theirs is a market projected to be worth $400 billion (U.S.) in three years. “Those numbers just can’t be ignored,” Mr. Chawla says. For John Jung, India repre- sents a land of contrast. The vice-president of interna- tional marketing for the Greater To ronto Marketing Alliance has visited the fast-growing nation many times, but is always stunned by the difference between the innovation hap- pening inside companies and the stark reality of life on the street. “You just walk past the gate and you are looking at immense poverty,” he said. “Infrastruc- ture that is crumbling or not in place or just waiting to be put together. Electrical cables that are lying around and pipes all over the place that should be in the ground but have instead been turned into housing along the street.” And that is really the crux of India’s growth challenge: keeping pace with its own economic boom. “It’s becoming very difficult for India because not only is the country trying to upgrade the infrastruc- ture to have better roads and services, but they are trying to catch up to the infrastructure that is so far behind,” Mr. Jung said. As the country struggles to modernize, the deficiencies in infrastructure, energy and edu- cation are creating opportuni- ties for companies from all over the world. To help local business under- stand the vast opportunities available and to make contacts on the ground, the GTMA organizes an annual mission to India. While it focused mainly on the Information Technology sector, the February 2007 mis- sion also opened doors for busi- nesses in the bio-tech and life sciences sector and in advanced manufacturing and aerospace. “We need to know among our- selves that we can’t just sit idly here with our heads in the sand and say, ‘Well, um, we are just going to compete with them,’” Mr. Jung said of why the organi- zation is pushing connections with India. “You can’t just have an emotional reaction. Simply sitting back and saying we’re going to close doors and just do everything locally is not going to work. It’s going to be a very global world.” Although part of the GTMA, Durham Region has yet to par- ticipate in any of its missions to India. “India has been on our radar for a couple of years,” admits Doug Lindenblom, a senior economic development officer for the Region. The department can see the links and potential opportuni- ties, especially in the energy market where India’s need to develop infrastructure -- in transmission and distribution of power -- is vast. The depart- ment invested in a consultant a year and a half ago to explore the potential, but found a lack of strong interest from local companies. “The potential rewards in a market like India are quite large,” Mr. Lindenblom said. “But the risks are very high. It sounds great because they need so much, but to get those projects actually off the ground in India is a horrendous pro- cess... A lot of companies are not equipped for that kind of long-haul investment in a risky market.” But that does not mean the department is dismissing India off hand. It has identified India as one of the region’s four tar- get markets and is interested in learning more about the energy centre being built in Hyder- abad. “We’ve been working on it for a couple of years, we’re not let- ting it go, we see the opportuni- ties, we know there’s connec- tions to be made,” he said. “I don’t doubt that at some point we are going to get there.” Next week: Inside India’s skills conundrum. Can Durham help? Survey results 75% 67% 67 per cent said they are likely to switch to banks, stores and other retail or service outlets that have demonstrated their commit- ment to the environment. 75 per cent said they are likely to change their own shopping habits to purchase more environmentally friendly goods and services, even if it means paying a premium. The championship match pits ESN Packaging against Team Bur- gundy on Wednesday, April 11 at Ajax High School at 8:30 p.m. ESN reached the final after a tough, defensive contest where ESN prevailed, but only narrowly, 35-34 in one semifinal against North Alliance Press. ESN big man David Jackson had a strong game on the boards, scoring 10 points, with Tom Rowen adding seven, including a last-second, three-pointer to win the game. NAP had a huge game from their big man Claude Feig who controlled the NAP offence, finishing with nine points. Frank Forde also made his presence known on the court, adding seven for NAP. Fifth seeded Burgundy upset No. 2 Top Shelf 43-40 in the second semi- final. Deadly accurate shooting from Sherwin James, Claude Whitfield and Henry Kuzniak with 10, 9 and 8 points, respectively, proved the difference for Burgundy. Bill Manos was the lone standout for Top Shelf, working his court magic to the tune of 17 points. This year’s league banquet is at Top Shelf on April 13, starting at 8 p.m. [ Irish football ] Free kids’ clinics DURHAM — Kids across Dur- ham Region can take part in free introductory Gaelic football clinics in Ajax this month, starting on April 14. The Durham Gaelic Football Club invites families with kids of all ages to take part in its second program of free Irish (Gaelic) football clinics. The program helps kids build co-ordina- tion, ball work, and team skills. Irish football is a fun, non-contact sport for all ages. It’s a fast-paced, free-flowing game that combines skills from soccer, basketball and volleyball. It’s played widely in Ireland, on a mag- nitude similar to hockey in Canada. The free programs run for five weeks, from April 14 until May 12, at the Salem Indoor Soccer Centre in Ajax and are open to ages five to 18. Specific times for each age group and more information about the programs can be found on the club website at www.durhamgfc.com. The Salem centre is on the grounds of the Carruthers Creek Golf & Country Club at 650 Lakeridge Rd., Ajax. Par- ticipants should arrive at 9:30 a.m. to register. Seniors set to compete Durham Region Senior Games begin next Wednesday By Shawn Cayley scayley@durhamregion.com DURHAM — As the Durham Re- gion Senior Games get set to kick off for another year, organizers are a little disappointed with low regis- tration numbers. Though he remains optimistic, Senior Games president Bob Stur- geon admits his disenchantment with the process of which he be- lieves has led to the low participa- tion rates to date. And with that in mind, common practice has always been for the organizers to set a registration cutoff date of two weeks prior to the event, but Stur- geon says that rule has been cast aside for 2007. “We’re really accepting them after the cutoff date,” he says. “We’ve had a problem with our post office box this year, and as a result, several (packages) have been returned to sender. We really goofed on our post office box.” Organizers indicated the Games address was PO Box 484, but it wasn’t. It was UPS Box 484. “That has delayed a lot of reg- istration forms,” Sturgeon adds. “Once we realized our error, we went around to all the senior cen- tres and added the proper address to the envelops, so it was the early submissions that were having the problems.” So with just a few days remaining until the first event, five-pin bowl- ing at Oshawa’s North End Bowl, Sturgeon is urging those interested in participating, to forward the reg- istration forms. The Games really get into full swing the following week when Shuffleboard and Euchre kickoff at the Ajax Seniors Building and the Royal Canadian Legion in Clare- mont, respectively. The 12 remaining events, in- cluding the popular Bid Euchre, an event Sturgeon says always seems to draw the most interest, will be spread all across Durham Region. Lawn Bowling, the Games’ final event, will take place at the Pickering Lawn Bowling Club June 13. Low numbers aside, Sturgeon remains hopeful the event will be just as enjoyable as in the past. “We had a good year last year, and I guess we shouldn’t expect two good years in a row,” he says with a laugh. “Again this year we have 15 events and everything is the same as last year. It should turn out pretty good. We’re hopeful.” In hopes of broadening the ho- rizons of senior participation in sports, Sturgeon is aiming towards getting involved in winter games on a full-time basis. “We do have six winter events that we’ll be involved in come the fall and winter,” he says. “Badmin- ton, curling, hockey, skating, skiing and volleyball. We entered a few teams in Winterfest this past Feb- ruary, and that was the first time we were involved in winter games. Now we are really into it and are ready to find teams, hopefully they’ll enter our winter games.” For registration and other in- formation on the Durham Senior Games, contact Bob Sturgeon at 905-655-6220. But, in the final, the team needed a solid defensive stand to capture the championship. The Panthers and Agincourt Canadians engaged in a true nail- biter in the final. A second-pe- riod marker by Peter Synowicki turned out to be the eventual game winner in a 1-0 Pickering victory. Goaltender Griffin Pel- letier put forth a stellar perfor- mance to earn the shutout. Pickering started the tour- nament with a 3-1 victory over Thornhill. Jake Palleschi, Brett Miller and Jake Parrott scored for the Panthers. Tejpal Mindra, Daniel Wilton and Jake Lamanna drew assists. In Game 2, the Panthers blitzed host Cedar Hill 11-0. Tyler Davis registered a hat trick to lead the way. Pelleschi and Parrott popped in a pair; Derrick Moore, Synowicki and Wilton notched single goals. Goaltender Dylan Ball earned the shutout, with strong defensive support provided by rearguards Justin Harris and Ryan Izzett. The Panthers whipped West Hill 6-2 in Game 3, thanks to a hat trick from Tyler Davies. Wil- ton added two goals and Mindra chipped in with one. Adam Fer- reira, Andrew Gosse, Mindra and Moore registered assists. In its final round-robin game, the Panthers dropped a 4-2 deci- sion to the Agincourt Canadi- ans, but still managed to cement first place and a spot in the final.
