Mark Hallman said the re- maining debris from a train that derailed Thursday about 11 a.m. should be cleared by then. Shortly before 11 a.m., police were called to a train derailment on the CN Rail line in Pickering. Sgt. Paul McCurbin of the Durham Regional Police Service said 20 to 24 cars jumped the track just south of Hwy. 401 and east of Brock Road. “There were no injuries re- ported to us,” he said early in the day. Mr. Hallman said two cars were carrying hazardous mate- rial, including hydrochloric and phosphoric acid, but there were no leaks. Enbridge Gas officials were called to the scene after a derailed train car hit a natural gas switch heater, said Enbridge spokesman Debbie Boukydis. “We were there almost imme- diately to turn the gas off,” she said. The switch heater is used to ensure the tracks don’t freeze. The Ontario Provincial Police highway safety division was also on the scene. Its main duty was to ensure there were no problems on Hwy. 401 as motorists slowed down to look at the scattered train cars. “The 401 is safe for travel,” said OPP Sgt. Don Bristow. Police appeal for information on stolen computer s AJAX — Police are seeking informa- tion from the public, including parents of students, as they continue to investi- gate the theft of laptop computers from an Ajax high school. IBM Think Pad laptops have been stolen from Pickering High School on Church Street North on two occasions over the past several months, Durham police said. The first theft occurred during an overnight break-in last No- vember, when someone gained access to the school’s Academic Resource Centre and took several computers. Another break-in occurred over- night Jan. 17, when 20 laptops were stolen from the resource centre and the school’s main office, police said. This time, the culprits left behind graffiti that included the words “St. Mikez”. Total value of the stolen computers and damage caused during the break- ins has been set at $60,000. Police be- lieve the thefts were carried out by someone who has knowledge of the school and where the computers were stored. Police are hoping to hear from any- one who has information about the in- cidents, including parents of students who have recently come into posses- sion of a laptop computer. Ve r non White confirms resignation By Jeff Mitchell jmitchell@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Vernon White has officially resigned as chief of the Durham Regional Po- lice Service, ending a period of confusion and speculation that began with reports early Wednesday he’s been hired as the new top cop in Ottawa. Chief White informed top police brass of his decision at 8:30 Thursday morning, then sent out an electronic mes- sage to the force’s rank and file members. He handed in his letter of resignation to the police services board, which announced at 10 a.m. he’ll be leaving after a transition period that acting board chair Bert Dejeet said may extend over “several months.” “We’re disappoint- ed and surprised,” Mr. Dejeet said dur- ing a telephone inter- view Thursday. “He is a great police leader. Durham Regional Police Association President Tom An- drews agreed his membership will focus on policing now that the rumours of the chief’s departure have been confirmed. “The membership will an- swer the bell no matter what happens,” he said. “I wish Chief White and his family the very best life has to offer.” Chief White was not avail- able for comment Wednes- day or Thursday. He was scheduled to take part in a press conference in Ottawa Friday. Vernon White joined Durham Regional Po- lice in the fall of 2005 after an extensive search for a candidate to replace retir- ing Chief Kevin McAlpine. A vet- eran of more than 20 years with the RCMP, the new chief arrived with impres- sive credentials and an air of optimism and ambition. He quickly impressed cops and people outside the service as intelligent and forthright, tak- ing part in community events and effectively communi- cating his views. Rumblings about his imminent depar- ture began Tuesday after- noon when reporters in Otta- wa started contacting sources here to get the inside scoop on the new chief. Wednesday morning an Ottawa Citizen article appeared naming Ver- non White as the new top cop in the capital city. But there was no official confirmation of the rumours until Thursday. In the mean- time, cops were left to won- der what was happening with the leadership of the service, Mr. Andrews said. “I found it concerning we were awaiting confirmation of things that were reported in the media,” he said. He said it’s up to senior management now to act deci- sively on the leadership issue. Mr. Dejeet said that while a meeting of police services board members was con- vened Wednesday afternoon, no decisions were made on how to proceed with the task of finding a new chief. That will be a topic of discussion when the board holds its reg- ular meeting March 12, he said. In the meantime Chief White will remain in Durham for an as-yet undefined pe- riod to assist in the leadership transition and to pursue ini- tiatives launched during his 18-month tenure, Mr. Dejeet said. In his letter of resignation he indicated he’s leaving Dur- ham for personal reasons, Mr. Dejeet said. Learn how to create your own pizza! From the time of the accident until about 3 p.m., riders looking to travel east of the Pickering GO station were bused by Durham Region Transit (DRT) from there to stations in Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. “Ever since the derailment occurred we have been working with GO Transit to co- ordinate a shuttle service and provide an alternate service to the people,” said DRT general manager Ted Galinis. GO Transit had 10 buses ready to shut- tle people between the Durham stations and another seven ready to put in service during rush hour. Although one track of the rail line had been cleared by 3 p.m., allowing a GO train to make its way by, Mr. Galinis said his staff would remain on standby for the remainder of the night. Due to heavy wind and snow conditions associated with the storm, passengers should continue to expect five- to 10-min- ute delays. Mr. Hallman said the cause of the de- railment is currently under investigation. Later in the day, it was reported the four- member crew on the freight train suffered only minor injuries. your business moves fast you need an accounting firm that can keep pace We all know the drill. There have been several studies done which show that the minimum wage should be at least $10 an hour so that people who are working for the minimum wage would at least make the low-income cutoff.” Mr. Hampton has been touring the province on what he calls the “Tour for $10” urging local citizens to join him in the fight for an immediate increase. He is hoping to gain support for Bill 150, which NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo brought forward late last year. Some small- and medium-sized busi- ness owners have raised opposition to the increase, saying it will cripple their operations and lead to job cuts. But Mr. Hampton, who was speaking at Wa lly’s Family Restaurant in Oshawa, said more money in people’s pockets is good for local business. “Folks who are working for low wages tend to spend all of their income in the local community,” he said. “Paying for food, paying for rent, paying for cloth- ing and the other things that you need in order to get through to the end of the month. So the people who benefit most from increasing minimum wage to $10 an hour, yes, would be low-paid work- ers. But the people who benefit second- most would be local small businesses because that’s where most of the money would get spent.” Walid Elawar, owner of Wally’s, said although an increase in wages will af- fect his industry more than any other, he is still in favour of it. He said he pays his employees more than the minimum wage. “People will have to be more in- ventive in which ways they are going to compensate for an increase in mini- mum wage,” he said. “It’s a great idea and everybody should support it.” According to the NDP, 1.2 million On- tarians earn less than $10 an hour. That number includes 200,000 who work for minimum wage, which puts them below the poverty line. “A t the end of the day, this is a matter of fairness and justice,” Mr. Hampton said. “The $10 minimum wage is an idea whose time has come.” ACADEMY OF DEFENSIVE DRIVINGwww.petersacademy.com Group Discounts Are Av ailable (for 3 or more) Mini Package Available • 25 hours in classroom instruction • 15 private in-car lessons on automatic • FREE pick-up at home • Courses start every week • Defensive driving instruction Learn Life Saving Skills Skid Control Evasive Maneuvers Braking Techniques • FREE progress report Card •EARLIER ROAD TEST $$2752750000 CALL NOW, LIMITED SPACE HOURS: 7 DAYS A WEEK, 10 AM -10 PM PETER'S MTO Beginner Driver Education Course Provider 4 Day Course March 10th -13th March 14th - 17th Plus GST An Installment Payment Plan For Yo ur Convenience 965 Dundas St. W. EDITORIALS & OPINIONS infodurhamregion.com P PAGE 6 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, March 2, 2007 durhamregion.com E ager to see Pickering, Ajax ‘in a different light’ Dorothy Gale was not the only one to click her heels together in the hopes of going home. I had a similar dream, and here I sit at my new desk at the News Advertiser. My name is Kristen Calis and I’m the new Pickering reporter. After living in Ajax most of my life, I kissed my family and pets goodbye in 2000 and headed off to university, like most of my friends at the time. When I finished university, I decided to move to Toronto for journalism school and felt quite comfortable in my little neighbourhood of East York. But when I saw that the paper I grew up on was looking for a new reporter, I quickly changed my tune. While I still live in East York and plan on making the commute each day (until I get tired of it, of course, and realize that sleep is more important than my view of the skyline and the souvlaki down the street), I will be spending most of my waking hours in Pickering. I also have the privilege of going to my parents’ place for lunch, which my new colleagues have teased me about already. I’m excited about my return as a re- porter because I’ll get to see the town and city in which I grew up in a different light. While I lived in Ajax, I shopped, ate, saw movies and did a lot of my living in Pickering. I’m now looking forward to seeing past the Pickering Town Centre and looking at the City of Pickering from a more newsy perspective. The population of Pickering has grown by 7,000 since I left; a lot of people. Since my return, I have learned that residents care about their community and are quite willing to come forward with their concerns. These two findings mean I will have a lot of issues, problems and concerns to address, and that the city will keep me on my toes. I used to talk too much, my grandfather would tell me. But I’ve recently learned to take pleasure in listening to what others have to say, and I look forward to hearing the stories surrounding Pickering and its residents. And although you won’t see me carry- ing Toto in a basket when I’m covering the news, I can certainly visit my family dog, Ginger, a little more often. There’s no place like home for new Pickering reporter Kristen Calis staff writer LETTER TO THE EDITOR Reader pleased prayer continued at Region To the editor: Now, since the dust has settled after the battle for the Lord’s Prayer to be kept in place, that is, to be continued at Durham Regional Council meetings, much gratitude is due to the people who contributed to the debate as well as to the councillors who voted in favour. Many thanks are due to Roger Anderson, the Regional chairman, for his democratic beliefs and his admirable words of wisdom: “Today there is a potential for this committee to change Durham’s history, but I am not going to change the history of this country.” This meaningful phrase in time will become an epithet. May God bless the freedom of expression and religion in Canada and all those who believe in and support it. With profound gratitude, O.N. O’Mara-Raven Ajax Tw o men have made a difference de Vries, Parfitt deserve our thanks O ne is recognized for his work with youth, while the other was noted for work related to his youth. Jan de Vries was one of 57 Canadians appointed to the Order of Canada as a Member. The Pickering resident understatedly calls it “a heck of a big honour.” Meanwhile, Ron Parfitt is retiring following a 32-year ca- reer as an educator and basketball coach at Pickering High School. As a 20-year-old, Mr. de Vries was one of thousands of Allied troops who stormed the beaches on D-Day. He’s receiving the Order of Canada for his extensive volunteer service, which includes playing a huge role in the building of the Juno Beach Centre in France. The centre honours the contribution to the war effort of Canadians, both those in the service and those at home. Mr. de Vries continues to serve as a director on the centre’s board. He’s also the president of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and he spends a lot of his time speaking to stu- dents, cadets and veterans. It’s not the first time Mr. de Vries has been recognized for his efforts. In 2004, he was bestowed with France’s highest honour for his actions on D-Day. The Legion of Honour was presented by French President Jacques Chirac on the 60th anniversary of D-Day. In 2005, Pickering honoured him with a special citation at the City’s Civic Awards. Mr. Parfitt, or coach Parfitt, has decided the time is right to retire. He came to Pickering High in 1975 and during his time there has had a positive hand in helping mould both students and athletes. For mer player Ian Wight said of ‘Parf’, “Mr. Parfitt was an inspiration to us. If it wasn’t for Mr. Parfitt, I don’t think I would have become what I am today.” Working with youths has driven Mr. Parfitt. When asked what he’d miss the most, he said, “The kids, definitely, relat- ing with them, seeing how they’re developing, seeing them go from being OK to good, from good to better -- seeing them grow as people.” These are two examples of the kinds of people that make a community. Honourable people doing small acts very well over and over. Mr. de Vries and Mr. Parfitt touched thousands of lives over the years. We’re all better for their efforts and for that, these two men deserve all the accolades they receive. AJAX PICKERING NEWS ADVERTISER 905-683-5110 Covering the Ajax news scene kgilligan@durhamregion.comREPORTER KEITH GILLIGAN By Jillian Follert jfollert@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Things are about to get a little hairy. Next month, five brave participants will bid their hair farewell and shave their heads to raise money for YWCA Durham’s emergency housing pro- grams. The idea was born last fall, when employees at W.B. White Insurance de- cided to do a Christmas fundraiser for the YWCA. Manager Keith Miller vowed to shave his head if staff raised $1,000 and the response was hair-raising, to say the least. Ta king it one step further, Mr. Miller has now rounded up five prominent members of the community willing to part with their locks. The Hair Affair will feature the hair- less heads of YWCA Executive Director Eva Martin-Blythe, Oshawa Councillor Tito-Dante Marimpietri, downtown Os- hawa business owner Doug Ross, TD Canada Trust manager Bob Pinkey and Oshawa accountant Howard Smith. “A t different points in time I’ve cut my hair very short so it’s not as scary for me... but I am a little nervous,” said Ms. Martin-Blythe the only woman to take the plunge. “Fortunately, my hair grows fast.” A minimum of $5,000 must be raised before any hair hits the floor. The participants will go bald Mon- day, April 2, at 12:30 p.m. at the down- town Oshawa TD Canada Trust branch located at King and Simcoe streets. To fill out a pledge sheet, drop by any of the 19 TD Canada Trust branches in Durham, the YWCA at 1 McGrigor St., or contact one of the soon-to-be bald participants. In addition to the hair- cutting action, the Hair Affair will also feature a silent auction and raffle with tons of prizes including Leafs, Raptors and Toronto Rock tickets. Concerned parents came in to get their kids assessed by health professionals. Centre director Judy Tryon said all of the parents’ questions can be answered in one easy visit. “We all know that if families in the com- munity do have concerns with their chil- dren they do have to go through the process to be able to get the agencies’ support and there often are waiting lists,” said Ms. Tryon. “This is just a quick time for the parents to have to come in and speak to the representatives and get information they may require.” Hearing, behavioural, and learning tests were performed at the session. Among the many organizations on hand were The Millennium Lions Club of Whitby. Club members per- formed vision screen- ing tests for the little ones. Children were asked to wear big, funny- looking sunglasses and look at a book with a large picture of a house fly on it. “The fly’s wings should pop out at them if they have good eyesight,” said Lions Club member Dave Sansom. A Durham Region Health Department’s Dental Hygiene educator was also there to teach the correct way to brush their teeth. Children learned the rule, ‘two for two is what you do.’ That means, brushing their teeth twice a day for two minutes at a time. The next ready, set, grow event in Dur- ham Region is scheduled for May 8 at the Beaverton YMCA. For more information, contact your local YMCA or daycare provider. p( ) See in store for complete details. NEWS ADVERTISER durhamregion.comP PAGE 14 THE NEWS ADVERTISER, March 2, 2007 You name it, you can get it Drugs are easy to find and cheap for today’s teens By Lesley Bovie lbovie@durhamregion.com DURHAM — Yo u’ve started noticing the odd $20 bill missing from your wallet. The teenager that once openly shared the details of his life, now takes to locking his bedroom door. He begins sleeping in late and goes about the house with a glazed look. There are suddenly new friends on the scene but you don’t know their names or their numbers. Individually, any one of these things could mean nothing. But collectively, they could point to the early signs of a big problem: drugs. “You often hear parents say, ‘He or she isn’t the same kid I used to know’. If you can say that, something’s wrong,” says Constable Gord Fleming, Whitby youth officer for Durham Re- gional Police. Teen sub- stance abuse often follows a pattern. T ypically, it begins as early as Grade 7 and 8 when stu- dents start to experiment. “They start with smoking ciga- rettes at school, move to alco- hol and then marijuana,” says Const. Fleming, who works pri- marily with junior high school students. At $5 a joint, or $10 a tab- let, drugs like cannabis and ec- stasy are affordable and readily available to young teens. Const. Fleming says they’re sold in front of schools and plazas. Te en drug use is usually at its height around the ages of 15 to 17, when youth are most mobile and in search of independence. By the time teens are referred to Pinewood Centre in Oshawa, they’ve established some pattern of use along with consequences. School attendance has taken a slide or drug possession charges have even been laid. Pinewood Centre offers Dawn, an early intervention program offering accurate and current information about substance abuse to youth aged 12 to 20 in a non-confrontational, non- judgemental way. The centre also runs a youth case-management group to help adolescents set goals in over- coming their substance abuse. Alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, crack, ecstasy and opiates are the most common drugs -- in that order -- seen among the teens at Pinewood Centre. Drugs like crystal meth and the date rape drug GHB get a lot of media attention, but cannabis and cocaine are more commonly used locally, says director Paul McGary. “Society functions so quickly now, it’s not difficult to get any substance. Twenty years ago, it might have taken some effort,” he explains. Compounding the long-term health effects of each drug is the manner in which they can be made today. C annabis is sometimes sprayed with Windex to make it heavier and more lucrative for the dealer. Cocaine is often cut w ith baby powder, corn starch or any other white-powdered sub- stance to maximize profit. Substance abuse has been linked to mental health disor- ders in youth and can interfere w ith important adolescent de- velopment. “If (teens) come to use it as a crutch, if they have to smoke a joint every time they stress out, they never learn how to deal with things on their own,” says senior addiction counsellor Jeff Gauthier. “That’s where you get adults aged 30 or 40 who have never learned to cope with life.” Still, like her counterparts at Pinewood, Linda Lowery, a sub- stance abuse and violence pre- vention co-ordinator with the Durham District School Board, is encouraged by the recent On- tario Student Drug Use survey. The 2005 survey of students in Grade 7 to 12 conducted every two years by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health showed drug use in this region at or below the provincial average in every substance. Education across the grades is still key to preventing teens from experimenting with drugs in the first place, says Ms. Lowery. She points to programs cur- rently in place like Racing Against Drugs for Grade 5 class- es and the Values Influences and Peers (VIP) program for Grade 6 students. “Obviously we’re not going to talk to kindergar- ten classes about crystal meth,” she adds. “But maybe we talk to them about the dangers of ciga- rette smoking or the safe use of medications. “The modelling we do as adults is also incredibly important.” Parents can learn more about the signs and symptoms of drug abuse at a safety presentation night Wednesday, March 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Donald A. Wilson Secondary School, 681 Rossland Rd. in Whitby. Constable Gord Fleming (youth officer) poses with an array of cannabis ‘bongs’ confiscated from young teens in Dur- ham Region. He holds one that is particularly fearsome as it resembles a firearm that could easily be mistaken for the real thing. And if you’re okay with that, then there’s no need to con- tinue reading this article. However, if you’re planning to sell sometime in the future and want to help ensure you get the most bang from your renovation then read on. Value-neutral and value-added renovations Surprisingly, as nice as it sounds, add- ing a swimming pool; or building a sauna or hot tub are considered value neutral renovations. This means there is not much payback in installing these features in your home. You can also expect the same for installing paving stones to the driveway and reducing the number of bedrooms to less than three. On the other hand, modernizing a kitch- en and updating a bathroom are regarded as value-added renovations. The same can be expected by creating a master bedroom with an ensuite bath and/or walk-in closet; and by remodelling or adding a family room, especially on the main floor. Cost-effective options Coming up with extra cash for a home renovation is not easy, especially if you’re juggling several financial responsibilities - including a mortgage, RRSP contributions and car payments. Finding a cost-effective financing option is a must, particularly if you’re planning a major home improvement project. Consider for example the CIBC Home Po wer Plan, which provides the freedom and convenience of a secured line of credit coupled with the security and peace of mind of a fixed-rate mortgage. This means that by using the equity in your home you can take advantage of lower interest rates with the secured line of credit. It also allows you to enjoy ongoing access to credit so you always have funds available when you need them. And if you’re concerned about rising interest rates, you may be better off with a fixed rate mortgage. If the rates are better than what you’re currently pay- ing, then you’ll save both on your mortgage payments and on the interest on your secured line of credit. Having a low interest rate on borrowed funds allows you to maximize the value of your renovation. For example, the total cost of the new kitchen and bathroom, including interest, may be offset by the increase in the value of your home. More information regarding the CIBC Home Power Plan is available from your local CIBC branch, by calling 1 (800) 465- CIBC (2422) or visiting the CIBC website at www.cibc.com. - News Canada Adding value to your home Kevin Woods and Diana Howe of Preferred Window Coverings have a combined business experience of 20 years in the window covering industry. Oshawa Little Theatre’s latest pro- duction is a zany British comedy with a crazy premise and an even crazier title. It’s something director Janet Stevenson refers to as “Monty Pythonish.” ‘They Came From Mars and Landed Outside the Farndale Avenue Church Hall in Time for the Townswomen’s Guild’s Coffee Morning’, hereinafter called ‘They Came From Mars’, is an off- the-wall comedy by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jr., who’ve written a whole series of plays around the women’s institute of Farndale Av- enue Church and the many plays they put on in the church hall. It’s opened March 8 and runs until March 24. ‘They Came From Mars’ is about the women’s attempts to put on a science fiction (heavy on the fiction) play. Oth- ers have included an Agatha Christie murder mystery, a version of Dickens’s ‘A Christ mas Carol’, a romance on the high seas and a farce. “It’s hard to get a handle on it in a way,” Stevenson said. “It’s nonsensical. It’s a bunch of women in a women’s institute in England putting on a play. I even have a hard time remembering the title. It’s very, very long.” There’s no moral, nothing deep to make the audience ponder long after they’ve left the theatre, she said. “It’s a good evening, a good laugh. I think the audience will really enjoy it. I think this play, grandmas down to children will enjoy it.” The actors all play one role in the play and one or two in the play within a play about the Martian. The women’s insti- tute characters are typical people, not actors by any stretch, but they tackle their play with enthusiasm, if not tal- ent. “They keep coming out of character. Nothing goes right,” Stevenson said. As for the OLT actors, they’ve been rehearsing the comedy for some time. Raissa Chemushenko plays the lead, Mrs. Reece, the head of the women’s group, and in the space play is Einstein. Andra Kelly, who recently appeared in Durham Shoestring Performers’ ‘Eliza- beth Rex’, plays Felicity in the main play and Mrs. Allsopp, the minister’s wife, and Indesit the Martian in the sub play. Howard Liscott, of the Borelians Community Theatre in Port Perry, plays Gordon in the main play and Rev. All- sopp in the space play. Natasha Noble is Thelma in the main play and brother and sister team, Jimmy and Susan, in the sub play. Cathy Partridge, who produced OLT’s last play, Dancock’s Dance, is Thelma in the main play and Roberta the Robot in the other play. Linda Gale does a variety of off- stage voices and plays the invisible character Jack. “It’s not an easy play for them to do since they have to switch charac- ters all the time,” Stevenson said. The action all takes place on small stage, much as you’d find in small com- munity centres, she said. When the au- dience enters, the stage is empty but it fill up quickly when Mrs. Reece comes out and gets her assistant to bring on the props. Stevenson said the audience will be treated as the play within a play audi- ence. Mrs. Reece talks to the audience, one cast member is often found in the audience and someone from the audi- ence will be asked to judge a flower contest at the end. There’s plenty of music, a blacklight sequence when everyone goes to Mars, a fight with a space monster and a rock- etship. And laughs, promised Stevenson. Curtain time is 8 p.m. at the theatre, 62 Russett Ave., Oshawa. There’s also a 2 p.m. matinee on the second Sunday of the run. Tickets are available online at www. oshawalittletheatre.com or at the Unit- ed Way Star Assist kiosk in the Oshawa Centre. High school students with valid photo ID can take advantage of the EyeGo program and get tickets for $5, at the door or in advance by e-mailing boxoffice@oshawalittletheatre.com. Vipers pounce on Panthers Juniors can bounce back from 2-1 series deficit with win in Pickering tonight PICKERING — The Pickering Panthers followed up a great ef- fort with a lesser one in their OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League South Conference semifinal playoff series with the Vaughan Vipers. A day after eking out a 2-1 over- time victory over the Vipers at the Pickering Recreation on Tuesday night, the Panthers fell hard, 6-2, at the Al Palladini Community Centre in Vaughan on Wednesday evening. We dnesday’s victory gives the top-seeded Vipers a two-games- to-one edge in the best-of-seven series. Game 4 goes tonight (Fri- day) at the Pickering Recreation Complex at 7:30 p.m. Game 5 of the series is in Vaughan on Satur- day at 7:45 p.m. Game 6, if neces- sary, is back in Pickering at the rec complex on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. To put it bluntly, the Panthers didn’t play well enough to win, notes head coach Pat Curcio. “We didn’t play well. We didn’t get the puck out of our end, we didn’t forecheck and we got out- worked. We gave up lots of scor- ing chances,” says Curcio. The Panthers kept it close for about half of Wednesday’s con- test, leading 2-1 early in the sec- ond period with Jamie MacQueen scoring just 2:02 into the middle stanza, followed by a Cody Smith marker just 38 seconds later. Soon after the back-to-back goals, Pickering had numerous chances to pad their lead, but couldn’t sneak one past Vaughan starter Carlo Di Rienzo. After Panthers’ scoring chances went for naught following their earlier outburst, the Vipers even- tually got rolling, pouncing on the Panthers for two goals at the midway point of the second, and three more in the final stanza to win going away. “We had opportunities to go up 3-1 or 4-1 and, if we had done that, the outcome would have been different,” notes Curcio. Panthers’ starting goaltender Brad Fogal, who almost single- handedly lifted the Panthers to victory in Game 2’s overtime win, making 56 saves — many of the heartstopping variety — was similarly pilloried with shots in We dnesday’s loss. He faced 49 shots on net, while Pickering only got 22 shots to the Vipers’ net. Kory Helowka was the hero for the Panthers in Game 2. The de- fenceman-turned-forward made his debut on a forward line with team captain Richard Schofield and Chris Dunham on Tuesday and admirably filled in for injured forward Kris Belan, who may not be back for the remainder of the playoffs with an eye condition. Helowka finished off a passing play between Schofield and Dun- ham to bag the overtime winner for the Panthers late in the extra frame. Smith opened the scoring for the Panthers in the second, while the Vipers’ Daniel Agozzino tied it with a short-handed marker in the third period. AJ Groen/ News Advertiser photo Pickering Panthers’ goaltender Brad Fogal looks back in the net after making the save, while Panthers’ defenceman Kevin Huinink, left, and Vaughan Vipers’ Paul Rodrigues look for the puck during OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League South Conference semifinal playoff action. The Panthers scored a 2-1 overtime victory at the Pickering Recreation Complex on Tuesday evening. On Wednesday night in Vaughan, however, the Panthers fell 6-2. Vaughan cur- rently leads the best-of-seven series two games to one. Pickering teen named as OHL’s player of the week PICKERING — A Pickering resident playing with the Owen Sound Attack earned Ontario Hockey League player-of-the- week honours for the week end- ing Feb. 25. Wayne Simmonds, 18, a for- ward with Owen Sound, scored two goals and added five assists for seven points in three games this week. On We dnesday, Simmonds had an assist in a 5-1 Attack victory on home ice against the Eastern Conference-leading Barrie Colts. The next night, Simmonds scored a goal and added two as- sists on the road as the Attack swept a home-and-home series with Barrie by recording a 5-2 victory. Last Saturday night, he potted a goal and added two assists in a 6-3 home-ice victory over the league-leading London Knights and was named the game’s sec- ond star. In his rookie sea- son with Owen Sound, Sim- monds cur- rently has 42 points in 59 games.Wayne Simmonds Shhhh, we’re playing hockey PICKERING — Apparently, you can pay your money to see a junior ‘A’ playoff game in Vaughan, but that doesn’t mean you can cheer on your team. The game announcer at Vaughan’s Al Palladini Community Centre for Wednesday’s playoff game between the Pickering Panthers and the Vaughan Vipers apparently implored fans to be quiet during the contest. “I heard it,” noted Panthers’ head coach Pat Curcio of the announce- ment. “It was totally bizarre.” That might wash at a classical music concert, but a hockey game?
