Business owners who rented units at 1895 Clements Rd. in Pickering haven’t been able to enter the building since a crystal methamphetamine lab exploded and fire ravaged it on Nov. 20. “We are doing everything pos- sible to make sure the people, the property and the environment are as safe as possible,” Mr. Fowlds said. Scott McGregor, the owner of Highwood Manufacturing and Ra- mona Williams, the owner of Dur- ham Plastics, earlier told the News Advertiser neither has been able to operate their business since the fire. “I really don’t know what is going on,” Ms. Williams said. “There are so many officials involved.” Making meth isn’t difficult. Mr. Fowlds said if you can bake cook- ies you can make meth but, it is very dangerous, involves danger- ous chemicals and a lot of cook labs end up on fire. “Because of the toxic residue left over from these things you end up with a lot of demolitions because cleanup is phenomenally expensive and tricky,” Mr. Fowlds said. “We don’t want people going in there, there is definitely toxic residues all over these units as a BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE Ron Pietroniro/ News Advertiser photo PICKERING — Students from the Durham College Fire Emergency Services course were down at Frenchman’s Bay learning about ice-water rescue techniques. Cleanup starts on meth lab Mayors don’t scramble message at business breakfast Ryan says Pickering is a good place to start a business By Keith Gilligan kgilligan@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Pickering Mayor Dave Ryan hopes the economic development success the City had during the last council term continues this term. Speaking to the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade Mayors’ Annual Address on Wednesday, Mayor Ryan stated during the last term of council, there were “2,200 news jobs and 1.5 million square feet of construction (added) and we’re looking for more of the same this term. “I’m proud of Pickering’s bur- geoning reputation as a good place to start a business,” Mayor Ryan added. About 150 people attended the affair at the Annandale Golf and Curling Club in Ajax. Both Mayor Ryan and his Ajax counterpart, Steve Parish, touched on the challenges facing their respective communities, as well as potential opportunities. Pickering was also designated an “urban growth centre” in pro- vincial plans, Mayor Ryan stated. ✦ See Cleanup, Page 2 ✦ See Ryan, Page 4 Opening March 1 in Pickering 1099 Kingston Road & Dixie TEL. 905-420-0708 visit us at www.circletbuffet.com for more details BEFORE 6PM BEFORE 6PM with purchase of beverage: ADULTS SENIORS $10.89 $11.89 WEEKENDS LUNCH & DINNER $9 .89 $10.89:: $8 .79 $9 .79 MONDAY TO THURSDAY DINNER $7 .79 $8 .79:: $6 .89 $7 .89 MONDAY TO FRIDAY LUNCH $6 .39 $7 .39:: $4 .79 $5 .89KIDS4-8 YRS 9-12 YRS STEAK & EGGS BREAKFAST BUFFET $8 .79 $9 .79 WEEKENDS 9 AM - NOON $7 .79 $8 .79:: On MARCH 1ST a NEW BRAND of BUFFET hits town... The air quality is severely compromised and every- thing inside the buildings is laced with at least 35 major volatile organic compounds including ammonia, ac- etone, nitric acid and etha- nol. The site is being treated like a toxic waste dump. On Feb. 20, all in- volved agencies, includ- ing Pickering Fire Services, Ministry of the Environ- ment, the Ministry of La- bour, the Electrical Safety Authority and the Technical Standards and Safety Au- thority, held their final sight meeting and cleanup has begun. Units 161 to 141, basically the entire block, is contami- nated and units 151 to 157 are so heavily contaminated they will be demolished. “We aren’t just coming in and mopping the floors,” Mr. Fowlds said. There are six steps to re- mediation according to a report prepared by Rochon Engineering Incorporated. Before anyone can enter, Mr. Fowlds said they will have to have Workplace Hazardous Materials Infor- mation System (WHMIS) training, and will be re- quired to wear protective shoes, hard hats, gloves, disposable coveralls and re- spiratory protection. Generators have been brought in to power ven- tilators with hepa filters to exchange the air in the building for 48 hours prior to stage two, contents re- moval. Contents will be wrapped in polyethylene plastic, vacuumed off and wrapped again. The con- tents will then go into a stor- age bin. “A t that point the contents can be taken to a proper decontamination facility to see if they can be salvaged,” Mr. Fowlds said. Not everything will be salvageable, as the chemi- cals penetrated materials like wood and paper. The units will then be stripped of drywall, wood and ductwork, back to brick walls. “Each unit had sampling done so we know the con- tamination level,” Mr. Fowl- ds said. “Each unit has a dif- ferent contamination level and a different schedule.” All the brick walls will then be power washed and sealers applied to the sur- faces. The heat in the building can then be turned back on. The final stage is encap- sulation where a shellac sealant is applied over ev- erything. Throughout all six stages is ongoing monitoring and sight testing. The entire process involv- ing demolition and rebuild could take six months but Mr. Fowlds said he hopes displaced business owners will be able to get the con- tents of their units soon. “They are all small busi- ness owners and not all of them even have insurance and it is terrible for them they losing their business and their livelihood,” Mr. Fowlds said. “There is the unknown factor they don’t know when they are going to be up and running, Yeah, it is not a good situation for them to be in.” Cleanup could take six months ✦ Cleanup from page 1 durhamregion.com Just one more way to get your news thanks to your friends at the Metroland Durham Region Media Group Jan de Vries a ‘popular’ guy By Danielle Milley Special to the News Advertiser PICKERING — Jan de Vries has re- ceived several accolades and awards through the years and now he can add Order of Canada to that list. Mr. de Vries was one of 57 Canadians appointed to the Order of Canada as Members by Governor General Michaelle Jean on Feb. 20. The Second World War veteran called it quite an honour. “I didn’t know quite how to handle that, it’s a heck of a big honour,” he said. “You just continue on and do what you’ve always done.” He said he was notified four months ago that his name had been put forward, he was sworn to secrecy. “Who knows if it’s going to happen or not,” he said. Mr. de Vries was honoured for his extensive and pro- longed volunteer service. He is the president of the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion (and has been for the past 12 years), he regularly speaks to students, cadets and veterans, he was instrumental in the building of the Juno Beach Centre, and he supports the Tony Stacey Centre for Veterans Care. “I do what I like to do and to be con- sidered like that is quite an honour,” he said. When asked why he thought he had been selected, he said he just does what he enjoys and thinks is important. “A lot of people don’t do things like that,” he said. “I just feel these kinds of things need support.” He was at the Tony Stacey Centre the morning after the official announcement and he said he has a date booked to speak to a group of students in March. Despite his busy volunteer schedule, he’ll make the time to travel to Ottawa for the official ceremony where he’ll receive a lapel pin and a medal. But for the man who enlisted in the battalion when he was just 19 years old and who fought on D-Day in the Battle of Normandy when he was just 20 years old, he has other medals that hold more meaning for him. “I consider my wartime medals the most important,” he said. Since the announcement was made Tuesday, Mr. de Vries said he’s received several calls and e-mails. “All of a sudden I’m quite popular,” he said. Mr. de Vries thinks his wife Joanne was more excited than he was when they heard the news. He adds the Order of Canada to other honours he’s received. In 2004, Mr. de Vries was bestowed France’s highest honour for his actions on D-Day. He received the Legion of Honour from French President Jacques Chirac at the ceremony in France to commemorate the 60th anniversary of D-Day. Several Canadians received the honour, but Mr. de Vries was the only one presented his in France. In 2005, he was honoured with a special citation at the City of Pickering’s Civic Awards. Pickering war hero to receive Order of Canada AJAX — Officers on the ground and in the air tracked down an armed suspect after an attempted carjacking early Wednesday in Ajax. Durham cops converged on a plaza at Westney and Kingston roads shortly after midnight after a man tried to force his way into a car occupied by three women waiting for take-out food. The driver pulled her door shut and drove off and the suspect fled on foot, police said. Officers tracked the suspect behind the plaza and gave chase as he fled to a residential area. The police helicopter Air 1 arrived on scene and tracked him using an infrared camera, finally cornering the man near a house. Officers converged on the scene and ordered the suspect to drop a knife. He was arrested without further incident. Javan Patterson, 19, of Carnelly Street in Ajax is charged with robbery, possession of a dangerous weapon and four counts of breach of probation. Carjacking suspect can’t escape infrared camera of Air 1 For more on this story “The interest in developing our downtown core is at an all-time high,” he said, pointing to the proposed redevelopment of the Bay Ridges Plaza and other devel- opments along Kingston Road. Also, the owners of the Pickering Town Centre are “ac- tively marketing” a 20-storey of- fice building on the mall site. The building, with a pedestrian bridge linking to the GO station, would form a ‘transit hub,’ he stated. “We want more business here, but we want more people to leave their cars at home,” Mayor Ryan said. He’d like the TTC to extend a rapid transit line from the Scar- borough Town Centre to the Uni- versity of Toronto Scarborough campus and then easterly into the planned Seaton community and out to the UOIT campus in north Oshawa. “We need to think creatively and beyond our borders,” he said. “It’s time the federal govern- ment made a decision on the airport lands. To keep it in limbo has compromised our abil- ity to plan,” he said, not- ing the lands were ex- propriated 35 years ago. The Oshawa airport generates “$60 mil- lion in gross domestic product. A Pickering airport would generate hundreds of millions,” he stated. “Whatever the federal government decides, Pickering is ready to move for- ward. We cannot wait another 35 years.” Mayor Parish noted Ajax coun- cil took part in a recent strategic planning retreat, laying out prior- ities for the next four-year term. “Now, we’ll go out and solicit public input,” Mayor Parish said, adding a session for business is being held on March 22. “There’s been a lot of coverage of the fight we’ve led to preserve our employ- ment lands,” he stated, noting without enough land for employment purposes, the Town can’t attract high-pay- ing jobs. The Town lost an Ontario Municipal Board hearing in the fall and has been able to have the board re- view that decision. “We intend to continue our struggle.” Ajax has had success attracting businesses, he said, pointing to the Loblaws distribution ware- house now under construction. Also, the Hilton Garden Inn has opened and a convention cen- tre is being built next to it. The slots operation at Picov Downs is about to celebrate its first an- niversary. The hotel and slots are “the core of something Ajax has never really had before and that’s a tourism industry,” Mayor Parish said. With a provincial election in the fall and a possible federal one in the spring, Mayor Parish said it’s a chance to put forward a united message on more funding for transit and transportation is- sues. “We need committed, dedicat- ed funding for transit from the senior levels of government,” he stated. “We won’t have a modal shift away from cars unless we have dedicated funding. “A j ax is in a very unique and good situation. We’re financially healthy and we have a clear vi- sion of where we’re going. The future is very bright for Ajax.” Bookmark www.durhamyorkwaste.ca for info and updates on energy from waste and the Durham York Residual Waste Study Producing electrical energy from your household garbage. Ryan wants feds to make a decision on airport Dave Ryan ✦ Ryan from page 1 New method will allow more community involvement By Crystal Crimi ccrimi@durhamregion.com DURHAM — School closure pol- icy discussions are on the table, following requirements from the minister of education’s pupil ac- commodation review guidelines. According to a staff report to the Durham District School Board Feb. 19, the minister’s guidelines require all Ontario school boards to develop and approve school closure policies and post them on their websites. Trustees will discuss the issue at the next meeting. “This will be to get the policy es- tablished and I think somewhere following that we will start the pro- cess to review schools,” said Jack Massie, facilities services superin- tendent. The guidelines include require- ments for an accommodation re- view committee to be appointed, with membership from the school and broader community; the com- mittee to hold at least four public meetings to consult and present the framework report and make recommendations; and for school boards to undertake a public ac- commodation review to determine a school’s future, which should ad- dress value to students, commu- nity, school board and the local economy, according to the report. Compared to the board’s pre- vious school closure process, the new policy is a little more trans- parent and has more community involvement, said Mr. Massie. The Province’s previous Minis- ter of Education, Gerard Kennedy, had introduced a moratorium on school closures, but the new minister, Kathleen Wynne, is sug- gesting closures may not be a bad thing over a long period, said Mr. Massie. He said a school with a smaller population could face more split classes and less student oppor- tunities. Currently, most schools in the province are experiencing enrolment decline. “If your student numbers are in decline, which will be happening in the next year or two (for Dur- ham), we will get less money per year than we got previously,” said Mr. Massie. Currently, some areas are seeing an increase in enrolment, while mature neighbourhoods are expe- riencing the opposite. The funding formula for new buildings hasn’t changed since 1998, said Mr. Massie. Trustee approval on the policy must occur by March 31. On Ju ne 30, Durham District School Board was advised its pri- mary class size needs in 2005/2006 and 2006/2007 would be 1,817, but after a school by school review was submitted to the ministry, Dur- ham’s entitlement was increased to 2,484 pupil spaces, said Jack Massie, superintendent of facili- ties services, during the Feb. 19 board meeting. It’s about time! Maybe more voters will cast their vote if they get the feeling that what they want from the councillor they elected is that they stay in touch with their electorate. It used to be that there was some communication between the voter and the elected official, but today, were it not for the televised council meetings, we would not know what our representatives are doing except for what we read in the News Advertiser. I for one would like to know who voted for or against the direct election of a regional chairman. I read remarks by coun- cillors as to how difficult the job of chairing a region like Dur- ham is and I agree with that. But, I also get the feeling that it is assumed by some in council that voters that are dumb enough to vote for them to represent them in council don’t have the intelligence to interfere with decisions they make. The way it stands now, I would have no choice but to vote for Mr. Anderson as I currently cannot see anybody able to replace him. Hopefully we will find someone to replace him. It sure irks me that we have to support Durham Region Transit with our tax dollars while he wasted money on extended parking spaces instead of having some of his civil servants use the transit sys- tem if they want employment there. Just a few superlatives to describe the Pickering Panthers in their playoff series with the Toronto Junior Canadians. There were many opportunities, many signposts along the way in the take-no- prisoners best-of-seven OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League South Conference quarter-final series for the fifth-seeded Panthers to wave the white flag and allow the fourth-seeded Toron- tonians to move into the next round. But, a determined team of Panthers wouldn’t allow it. They wouldn’t quit after dropping a heartbreaking overtime decision in Game 2 that produced six overtime sessions and didn’t end until the wee hours of the evening when a shot by Pickering resi- dent and Junior Canadians’ captain Kyle Wetering somehow got behind Panthers’ goaltender Brad Fogal, thus ending the longest game in Ontario Hockey Associa- tion history. They wouldn’t mail it in after being defeated for a second time on home ice in the series, 2-1, at the Pickering Rec- reation Complex last Wednesday night, which gave Toronto a commanding three- game-to-one series lead with Games 5 and 6 to be played in the friendly confines of Chesswood Arena. They wouldn’t lay down as the clocked ticked down on their season in Game 5 in To ronto with the Junior Canadians ahead 3-2 and the third period entering its final minute of play. With a mere 34 seconds separating the Panthers from first-round playoff elimination, Kris Belan -- the last player to join the Panthers after being cut loose by the Oshawa Generals -- scored to breathe new life into the Pickering squad. In overtime, Phil McIlhone, an- other former General, scored to send the series to Game 6. They would not be denied as, once again, the penultimate game in the se- ries needed overtime to decide the victor after Toronto and Pickering duelled to a 2-2 deadlock at the end of regulation time on Saturday night. Different night, and a different hero for the Panthers, as captain Richard Schofield notched the overtime winner. And, finally, they wouldn’t be derailed in Game 7 of the series played before an overflowing crowd at the Pickering Recre- ation Complex on Sunday. The Panthers fed off the large numbers in attendance to put the finishing touches on a simply outstanding playoff series by outskating, outworking and ultimately outscoring the visiting Junior Canadians 6-2 in the crucial game. The last words to Pick- ering Panthers’ head coach Pat Curcio: “We told them ‘if you keep working hard you’re going to get your breaks’. There’s not a guy in this dressing room believed there was a chance we were going to lose if we worked hard.” Al Rivett’s column appears every third Friday. E-mail arivett@durhamregion.com. Whitby now falls within the catchment area of the Rouge Valley system, which includes hospital sites in Ajax and Scar- borough. But many Whitby citizens also travel to Lakeridge Health Oshawa to get care. Pickering, with a population of close to 100,000, should be in line for any hospital in Seaton to serve its own residents. Clearly, with population levels to suggest Whitby could eventually crest over the 200,000 mark and with continued growth coming at a rapid pace in the neighbouring munici- palities of Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa and Clarington, it will be necessary for Whitby to have its own full-service hospital. The only question is when. Nobody is suggesting there will be a shovel in the ground any time soon. For now, Oshawa has opened up a brand new much-improved and larger emergency room. There are also improvements on the way at Rouge Valley Ajax-Pickering. But while such much-needed facility enlargement is wel- come, it won’t be enough long-term to serve the fastest grow- ing region in Canada. The first step in that process is for the mayor along with council and other movers and shakers in town to make it clear there is no substitute for a top-level hos- pital, perhaps with a connection to the new programs being developed at the University of Ontario Institute of Technol- ogy. While co-operation is fine in principle, the mayor made it clear to Rouge Valley administrators that’s as far as she wants to take it. “I’m glad that we can work together, I just don’t want you to take us over,” she said. The Durham Catholic District School Board is one of three up for an audit of its facility manage- ment practices. Conducted by the Auditor General of Ontario’s office, the report is to review current facility management practices, including custo- dial services and ongoing school care, preventa- tive maintenance schedules, energy management programs and purchases of service, among oth- ers. Ryan Putnam, comptroller of finance and se- nior business official for the board, said two thirds of the audits evaluate value for money. Mr. Putnam said he thinks the audit will be a positive thing because the auditor general is going to find the board is doing some good things. “It’s a real opportunity, we’re looking forward to this audit,” said Tim Robins, senior manager of facilities services. He said it should confirm the board is on the right track and provide recognition of best practices. The four-member audit teams begin fieldwork shortly and should be completed by the end of April. A report on the findings will be shared with the board and ministry in advance of being tabled in the legislature. Catholic board welcomes audit Pickering Campus 1884 Altona Rd. Women from Paraguay, a land-locked country in South America, have writ- ten the service for the day, being held on Friday, March 2. World Day of Prayer has been held annually since 1922 and many local churches participate. More than 170 countries and 2,000 communities in Can- ada are taking part. The Triple Alliance War in the 1800s robbed the country of its access to the sea and 80 per cent of its male population. A 35-year dictatorship that ended in 1989 left poverty, environ- mental destruction and re- pression. He’ll be placed on three years probation upon the completion of his sentence. In delivering his reasons for judgment Justice Barnes made note of the unusual nature of Mr. Cripps’s case; unlike a typi- cal pornography consumer, the man was collecting images not for sexual gratifica- tion but for a film project -- referred to his defence lawyer as a “shockumentary” -- condemning the ease with which anyone can find child porn on the Internet, Justice Barnes said. “Mr. Cripps has not been diagnosed as a pedophile,” the judge said. “There is no evi- dence he obtained any sexual gratification from the child pornography.” When Durham police raided Mr. Cripps’s Whitby home in January 2006 they seized computer equipment containing hundreds of images of children involved in sexual ac- tivity, as well as videotapes that constituted a number of editions of a film he’d been working on. The film, played at a bail hearing last year, intersperses pornographic images with music clips and live-action film sequences including Mr. Cripps working out in a home gym. In voice-overs Mr. Cripps reads a bizarre script which extols the virtues of grooming children for sex and incest. The film was a satirical screed aimed at pointing out the evils of child porn on the Internet, Mr. Cripps’s lawyer, Edward Pruts- chi, said during a sentencing hearing after Mr. Cripps pleaded guilty to possession of child porn last week. Rather than conceal the material, Mr. Cripps promoted it, send- ing copies to film festival adjudicators and seeking investors, the judge heard. Despite obtaining a legal opinion that possessing the pornographic images is a crime Mr. Cripps made the decision to maintain possession of it, Justice Barnes noted. He said consumption of online porn fuels a perceived demand for the material and may lead to more children being abused. The judge rejected a defence proposal for a term of house arrest, saying strict punish- ment of offenders is necessary to send a message of condemnation and deterrence. However, warming up the car can mean unnecessary work for the Ajax Fire and Emergency Services. Since the start of the year, fire crews have been called out 125 times after a car- bon monoxide detector went off in the home. In most cases, the detector was activated by the homeowner warm- ing up their vehicle in an attached garage. Thom Evered, the chief fire preven- tion officer with the Ajax department, says people shouldn’t warm up a ve- hicle by letting it run in an attached garage, as carbon monoxide levels can build up and seep into the home. CO can easily get into a home through small openings in the walls or around improperly sealed doors. An odourless, colourless gas, CO is produced when fuels are burned. In multi-unit homes, such as town- houses, CO can travel to adjacent units as well. A homeowner should also ensure the vent pipes from a direct vent fur- nace are clear of snow. Built-in safety features should shut a furnace down if the vent is blocked, but CO can build up before the shut- down. It’s also possible there’s a problem with the built-in safety feature. If that’s the case, a certified heating contractor should be called. More information on CO can be found at www.tssa.org, in the public safety information section. Move your car to warm the engine on cold winter mornings Sudoku durhamregion.comNOW ONLINE 48 1 7 8 6 7 3 576 1 86 9 5 6 7 687 3 91 4 19 24 Check it out at View differs from one shared by Pickering and Ajax By Jennifer Stone jstone@durhamregion.com DURHAM — It would appear Claring- ton isn’t wavering on its stance on direct election of the Regional chairman. Monday, Clarington’s General Purpose and Administration Committee voted 5-2 on a motion stating the Municipality will let the Province know it “vehemently” opposes direct election of the chairman. Though the motion goes to council Feb. 26 for final blessing, it was granted forth- with approval, meaning staff has been directed to prepare and send the letter to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs right away. The decision comes on the heels of a 15-13 vote by Durham Regional council endorsing Bill 172, which seeks to have Durham move to the direct election of the position. But, Clarington councillor Adrian Fos- ter said he’s not convinced, in spite of the results, having candidates for chairman run at large across Durham is the best idea. The motion indicates Durham’s member municipalities have been “well- served by the current practice” of having councillors elect the Regional chairman after each municipal election. “I’m not convinced it’s more demo- cratic” to hold an at-large election across Durham, said Coun. Foster. “The chair could be elected ... and be told they have a mandate from the people, not a man- date from council, but a mandate from the people” which would dramatically alter the dynamic of the position. The current system allows people to run “by virtue of qualification only,” said Coun. Foster who estimated it would cost about $250,000 to run a campaign across such a large geographical area. But, at least one Clarington councillor felt the language of the motion might be too strong. “We’ve used a very powerful word here -- vehemently -- but we didn’t put it on the ballot for the people and didn’t ask their opinion,” said Coun. Wil- lie Woo, one of two Clarington council- lors to vote against the motion. Ajax Mayor Steve Parish said the issue is in the hands of the Province. It’s pos- sible, he said, the Province could require it to “go under the provisions of the triple majority act,” in which case five munic- ipalities would have to vote in favour of direct election. But, with Clarington and Whitby, along with the two northern Durham municipalities, against the idea of direct election, the matter could, in that case, be dead in the water. -- with files by Erin Hatfield emiTsetaDnoitacoLtcatnoChcaoCeugaeLegA / raeY 8991 5045-854 614enossiL drahciRLSGD 9U 9269-905-509ynohtnA ibiBLSGD 7991 odlauseG eneGLSEC 8891-905-509 01U retsoF aicirtaPLSEC 2266-138-509 6991 LSEC 0165-738-509ehcalaP ecnaV 11U LSECABT 7748-686-509angavlaS eilrahCLSEC5991 9886-686-509icciR oinotnALSEC21U 8542-738-509onidranreB noxiN3L-LSGC4991 9262-624-509oodaJ sirhCrP4L LSGC31U 2849-227-614gniaL treBLSYO3991 tropsorteM ht4 raM & ht52 beF nuS mp00:7 ot mp00:5 9016-905-509renkraC eibbeDB1D 4L -LSGC41U tropsorteM ht4 raM & ht52 beF nuSnoon ot ma00:01 2991 9108-527-509rebaniN yrneHB1D4L -LSGC51U tropsorteM ht5 raM & ht62 beF noM mp00:7 ot mp00:6 4427-686-509sanuR negroJ3L - LSGC1991 LSGC61U-P4L rKveinF ava509-738- 4250 2812-824-509etihW ynnaMLSYO0991 retneC lastuF ts1 raM& dn22 beF sruhT mp03:9 ot mp03:8 71U 5837-024-509ydenneK ffeJ3L - LSGC tropsorteM ht82 & ts12 beF deW mp03:9 ot mp00:8 9891 1107-824-509gniH ydnA3L -LSGC81U tropsorteM mp03:9 ot mp00:8ht82 & ts12 beF deW 6891 8068-138-614seugirdoR kraMlaicnivorP12U 6891 0653-138-509 ecnessoB evetSlanoigeR12U & 5891 9791-024-509ecraeP lraCgeR LSWOredlO dr3 raM & ht42 beF taS mp00:4 ot mp00:2 notrabnuD ht4 raM & ht52 beF nuSma00:11 ot ma00:9 7002 ELUDEHCS TUOYRT 'SLRIG 9991 aicraG osnoflALSGD8U mp00:9 ot mp03:7 tropsorteM mp00:8 ot mp00:6ht82 & ts12 beF deW mp00:8 ot mp00:7 dr3 raM & ht42 beF taS ma03:9 ot ma00:8sorteMptro tropsorteM notrabnuD dn2 raM & dn22 beF sruhT mp03:7 ot mp00:6 5643-824-509 tropsorteM tropsorteM ts1 raM & dn22 beF sruhT Mon Feb 19th & 26th Please note - We recommend that you contact the coach before attending a tryout For additional information you can contact the Club Head Coach “headcoach@pickeringsoccer.ca” or the PSC offi ce “mainoffi ce@pickeringsoccer.ca” TRAIN SMART PLAY HARD HAVE FUN Visit our website pickeringsoccer.ca for info on house league registration! This article, of course, being the exception. If you had a penny for how many times you’ve heard, “that’s the best price” you wouldn't have to worry about the cost of things, but you do. This being the case, I dare you to compare what you’re paying for your car insurance to what the lowest price really is. Truth Your Insurance company has probably told you that you’re a 6 or even a 10 star driver! You may be receiving a 10% discount for this, and a 5% discount for that. But, if these stars and discounts still mean you’re paying double what you would with another company, who cares? Dare I dare you to compare. If you are really paying a great price for your car insurance, then you’ll know. If you’re not, you may have just saved yourself, possibly $780, or more. InsuranceHotline InsuranceHotline.com’s free search compares over 30 insurance company rates, instantly. On average, it could save you in the neighborhood of $780. Look At This Chart Here’s a rate comparison, done by the government, for over 30 insurance company rates, showing the lowest to highest rate quoted. Note the spread between these rates. This rate comparison shows over $11,000 difference between insurance company rates for the exact same driver. Most drivers are insured with companies whose rate falls somewhere in the middle of this spread. Dare to Compare In fact, I’ve seen many “good drivers” pay more than drivers with tickets or an acci- dent simply because they never did a quick rate comparison through the free service offered by InsuranceHotline.com. Truth or Dare DRIVER PROFILES LOWEST HIGHEST 19 Years-Old $5,639 $13,024 1 Ticket & Accident $2,291 $14,247 2 Drivers $2,703 $7,302 Clean Record $882 $2,590 Lee Romanov Insurance Expert Truth or dare. I dare you to find the truth. Are you overpaying by $100’s, even $1,000’s for your car, home, or life insurance? Find out by going to InsuranceHotline.com. For its next concert, ODSO turns to Gustav Mahler in a concert entitled Magnifi- cent Mahler. The concert will indeed be magnificent as the orchestra continues to celebrate its 50th anniver- sary, this time with another orchestra and in Toronto on March 3. The concert will be held at the Toronto Centre for the Arts, 5040 Yonge St., at 7:30 p.m. with the Kingston Sym- phony Orchestra. On the pro- gram is Mahler’s Symphony No. 5. “Mahler’s incredible 5th Symphony is one of the most powerful works in the repertoire for its emotional and psychological scope,” says music director Marco Parisotto. “It is an enormous challenge for orchestras and its performance can be noth- ing less than a transforming experience for the audience. It is my pleasure to be able to present this masterpiece to our public with the excellent, passionate and devoted mu- sicians of the ODSO and our guests, the Kingston Sym- phony.” Mahler, born in Bohemia in 1860, studied music in Austria and was one of the leading orchestral and oper- atic conductors of his time. The composer of symphonies and song cycles is considered one of the most important post-Romantic composers. Parisotto said the com- bined orchestras and the program required ODSO to go outside of Durham for a proper venue. He said the To- ronto Centre for the Arts is a venue worth the music, and highlights the need for an arts centre for Durham Re- gion which is home to more than 400,000 people and is one of the fastest growing areas in Canada. ODSO board chairman Ed Vanhaverbeke said the venue, the music and the two orchestras playing as one will provide a “memorable con- cert” for everyone. The two orchestras will re- peat the concert on March 4 at the Grand Theatre, 218 Princess St., Kingston, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets for Magnificent Mahler can be purchased through Ticketmaster. Visit their web site, www.ticket- master.ca, or call 416-872- 1111. Durham residents can also reserve tickets at 905-579-6711 or by e-mail- ing tickets@odso.ca. (Tickets cannot be purchased through normal ticket venues or the symphony website for this concert.) Concertgoers may want to take advantage of a special bus service ODSO is arrang- ing, at a cost of $30 per per- son. The service will leave the Oshawa Centre parking lot, near the farmers’ mar- ket area, at 5:45 p.m. March 3, dropping everyone at the concert venue at 7 p.m. The bus will return to Oshawa immediately after the per- formance. The cost for the round trip includes a box lunch. This bus service must be prepaid. Call Elinor Kidd at 905-668-4085 or visit www. odso.ca to reserve seats. The fourth-seeded Spartans opened the series with a solid 5-3 victory over Eastdale at the Legends’ Centre in Oshawa on Wednesday afternoon. Dunbar- ton was paced by Cody Pollard and Cole Watkins, who each notched two goals in the win- ning cause. Kevin Helm notched the other goal. B y Al Rivett arivett@durhamregion.com PICKERING — Despite coming off an emotional seven-game series against the Toronto Junior Cana- dians, the Pickering Panthers are good to go in their series opener in Vaughan against the top-seeded Vipers on Saturday night. Panthers’ head coach Pat Curcio says the six-day layoff between the end of the previous series and the start of the OHA Ontario Provin- cial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League South Conference semifinal has been needed and welcomed by his play- ers to prepare for what promises to be another stern test from the Vi- pers. “I’m not too concerned,” says Curcio of the rigours of the Toronto series having an adverse affect on his players. “I think the team is well- rested, there’s no one injured. We just have to focus on Game 1 on the road without thinking about what we’ve done in the past. We’re trying to focus on the upcoming task on Saturday night.” Curcio says the big test will be to find a chink in the Vipers’ defence, which has been stingy throughout the regular season and on into the playoffs where they took out the North York Rangers four games to one in the South Conference quar- ter-finals. “They’re a great defensive hockey club. They play a system where they give up the least number of scoring chances. They don’t need to score a lot of goals, they’ll settle for a 1-0 win. Every one of their games have been fairly close, but they always give up less goals than the opposi- tion,” explains Curcio. He hopes the Panthers’ collective speed on the forward lines, com- bined with the size of their forwards will give the Vipers headaches in their own zone. “They’re a trapping team, so we have to attack with speed. We have to create offence off our cycle. We have some big, strong forwards who are hard to contain. We’re going to use that to our advantage.” Just like the last series against To- ronto, goaltending will have a large say in how the series unfolds. Pan- thers’ starter Brad Fogal, for the most part, outduelled Toronto starter Alan Reynolds, especially in Pickering’s Game 7 victory. Fogal will match up against Vipers’ starter Carlo Di Rien- zo. Fogal started all seven games in the opening series, putting up a sterling 2.16 goals-against average. Meanwhile, Di Rienzo started three games in the North York series, post- ing a 2.33 goals-against average. “Brad Fogal has been big for us, but they have a great goaltender, too (in Di Rienzo). We have to get a lot of pucks to the net and drive the net. The less he sees, the more opportu- nity we’ll have to score on him.” Curcio’s unfazed by the percep- tion of his Panthers being the under- dogs against the Vipers, which fin- ished first in the South Conference during the regular season. In fact, Va ughan finished 20 points ahead of the fifth-seeded Panthers. Moreover, the Vipers won the regular-season season series between the two clubs four games to two. “Everyone thinks we are the un- derdog. Do I think we are? I don’t think we are. We match up well against them. Let’s put it this way, no one’s won a championship in the regular season. What teams wins in the playoffs is the best team.” Panthers hope speed de-fangs Vipers in playoffs Panthers-Vipers schedule PICKERING — The Pickering Panthers and the Vaughan Vipers duel it out in the best-of-seven OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ Hockey League South Conference semifinal playoff series. Sunil Dhaniram, 37, of Ajax, and Desmond Chumney, 39, of Pickering, are two of the 15-mem- ber Canadian cricket team playing at the World Cup in the West In- dies, from March 13 to April 28. The Canadians left on Thursday for the Caribbean for a series of warmup games before the World Cup. For Dhaniram, playing for Can- ada at the World Cup is simply a dream come true. “It’s every cricketer’s dream to play in a World Cup tourna- ment. Obviously, this is one of my dreams,” he says. “Canada has the opportunity to play in the World Cup, so it’s right up there.” And, no matter that the Cana- dians will be in a battle to emerge out of Group ‘C’, which also in- cludes Kenya, New Zealand, and England, into the quar- ter-finals, Chumney says they will. And, the experienced batsmen, who’ll be the fifth batsmen for Canada at the World Cup, should know. Chum- ney represented Canada at the last World Cup in 2003 in South Africa and notes the Canadian squad is overall more talented than the one in South Africa that claimed Can- ada’s first-ever victory at a World Cup after beating Bangladesh. “Right now, get to the quarter- finals. That would be a big goal for us,” says Chumney after he and his teammates were the guests of hon- our at a fundraising dinner at the To ronto Cricket Club recently. “I think we’re a stronger team. We’ve played a lot of games. We’re pretty prepared this time around.” Dhaniram concurs with Chum- ney’s assertion the Canadians are set to take a bold big step forward at this year’s World Cup, hopefully being one of two teams in Group ‘C’ to advance to the quarter-finals. “I think he’s right. We stand a very good chance. Kenya and England are not playing good cricket right now, so we stand a good chance of going to the next round.” Chumney comes to the Canadi- an team for not only his experience, a Canadian national team member since 1994, but also for his batting. He notes that he’ll be counted on for runs at the World Cup. Meanwhile, Dhaniram is an ‘all- rounder’ with the Canadians as someone who’s not only strong as a batsman, but who’s also a tal- ented bowler. He’s known as a left- handed “spin bowler”, which will give opposition batsmen a different look when the ball sails toward the wickets. “I hope to help the team win in a lot of ways,” says Dhaniram. Mostly, though, the Canadians’ chances at the World Cup hinge on its ability to bat. “Good run production -- that’s definitely our strength,” says Dhani- ram. “We do have a pretty good bowling lineup as well.” A native of St. Kitts, Chumney has not only been a long-time Ca- nadian national team member, but has also played at the Victoria Park Cricket Club for the past 15 years. Meanwhile, Dhaniram, a native of Guyana, played for the national cricket team of Guyana in 1991 and ’92 before coming to Canada in 1992. He started competing for the Canadian national team in 2003 and has played at that level ever since. He’s currently a member of the Toronto-based Cavaliers Crick- et Club. The Canadians recently returned from a series of matches in Kenya with the Canadians finishing fourth out of six teams there. One of their victories was against the Kenyan national team -- the same team they’ll meet in their first pool game at the World Cup on March 14. “We’re looking to win that game. We beat them in Kenya in their home tournament, so we’re ready to go,” says Dhaniram. After the game against Kenya, the Canadians continue pool play on March 18 when they match up against England. Pool play comes to a close on March 22, when Canada plays New Zealand. All pool games are in St. Lucia in the West Indies. So far Durham police have linked two compromised cards to the suspect and believe more may be out there, said Detective John Van Seters of the major fraud unit. “I’m hoping I’ll identify other com- plainants out there,” he said. “Some people may not even have filed a police report yet; this might ring a bell.” An investigation was launched in the summer of 2006 when management at Sherwood Bridal Incorporated, which has five shops in Ajax, Whitby, Belleville and Mississauga, reported significant cash shortages that were attributed to internal fraud, Durham police said. The shops involved are outlets of Sherwood Bridal Inc. and Bridal Ward- robe Inc. It’s believed a woman who worked at the shops made unauthor- ized refunds and collected the cash; fraud investigators have also conclud- ed she unlawfully obtained customer credit card data and used it for pho- ney transactions. She was arrested and charged originally in September 2006 and an ongoing investigation has re- vealed more potential frauds, Det. Van Seters said. “She has worked at all five locations but predominantly in the two Ajax stores and the Mississauga store,” he said. The young woman was fired when cash shortages were noticed by man- agement, Det. Van Seters said. As the investigation continued it be- came apparent credit card fraud may be involved as well, the fraud investi- gator said. A customer complained an employee had taken down credit card information without authorization and a fraudulent transaction involving a card used at the store was reported in September 2006. Yanique Miller, 19, of Lancaster Ave- nue in Ajax faces fraud and theft charg- es. Total losses amount to $60,000, po- lice said. Investigators want to talk to anyone who conducted transactions at Sherwood Bridal Inc., which also oper- ated under the business name Bridal Wardrobe Inc. who may be aware of suspicious activity on their credit card accounts. “They may have noticed some un- usual or unauthorized charges on their account,” Det. Van Seters said. Customers can call Det. Van Seters at 905-579-1520, ext. 5321.
