DURHAM — Student trustees
should be able to get more out of
their position following a new gov-
ernment regulation.
Along with receiving an hono-
rarium, student trustees can par-
ticipate in more school board busi-
ness after changes to the Education
Act. According to a report present-
ed at the Feb. 5 standing commit-
tee meeting, the Durham District
School Board has to amend its
Bylaw 12 to comply with the new
regulation.
“There’s a number of changes to
be made, not the least that includes
adding a $2,500 honorarium,” said
Craig Burch, the board’s director of
education.
A letter from the ministry of ed-
ucation regarding the Province’s
student trustee Regulation 07/07,
filed by the government on Jan. 15,
says student trustees will be paid
$2,500 each and serve a term from
Aug. 1 to July 31. Elections are to
be held by April 30 and salaries will
be pro-rated for students who have
not served the full year. Expenses
and resources, as well as access to
professional development oppor-
tunities, must also be provided.
Health network to
oversee $2 million
in funding
By Keith Gilligan
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — Almost $2 million
is going to be used to help patients
leave hospitals sooner and ensure
geriatric patients receive more
personal care.
The Central East
Local Health Integra-
tion Network (LHIN) an-
nounced the funding for
the two initiatives, with
the money to be spread
across the organization’s
catchment area.
About $1.35 million
will be used to fund a geriatric
emergency management partner-
ship between five Central
East LHIN hospitals, in-
cluding the Rouge Valley
Health System, Lakeridge
Health, the Scarborough
Hospital, Peterborough
Regional Health Centre
and Ross Memorial.
Clara Tsang, a geriatric
clinical nurse specialist/
nurse practitioner at Rouge Val-
ley, started a similar program with
Rouge Valley in 2004.
“I deeply believe a geriatric
emergency management (GEM)
practitioner can have a great im-
pact in the quality of life in our
seniors,” she said.
With the program, a GEM prac-
titioner would work with a patient
when they come to a hospital.
Ms. Tsang said when a geriatric
patient comes into an emergency
department, skills are needed to
assess them.
Given the “unique” needs of ge-
riatric patients, some of whom are
on many medications and have
multiple ailments, it’s important to
have someone trained in dealing
with them, Ms. Tsang said.
Dr. John Peto said “we need the
bodies quickly. Within a well set-

Seniors’ homes “send
patients to us because they
don’t have the resources to
handle them or at the fam-
ily’s request.”
Dr. Peto said a geriatric
specialist could “improve
the flow” of patients in the
ER. “They can see other
specialists and not sitting in
the waiting room.”
James Meloche, the se-
nior director, planning, in-
tegration and community
engagement, for the Central
East LHIN said a detailed
plan will be developed
within a month, including
how many people may be
hired.
Funding for both pro-
grams is coming from $13.7
million in one-time funding
to build capacity to deliver
care and to improve the
availability of hospital beds.
“We see this as a growth
project. We believe it should
be standard level of care for
seniors in our hospitals,” he
said.
The original program has
“shown itself to be very ef-
fective. The LHIN will de-
cide how to fund it” once
the funding runs out, Mr.
Meloche stated.
The specialist will “work
with the senior most in
need,” he said. “We’re try-
ing to deal with people in
the ER so quickly.”
The $610,800 will increase
home care and community
supports for patients with
‘a lternate levels of care’
(ALC), such as patients who
are in the hospital but who
no longer need hospital ser-
vices.
Marilyn Emery, the CEO
of the Central East LHIN,
described ALC patients “as,
in other words, patients not
receiving the right care in
the right place.”
The funding will also be
used for the Central East
Community Care Access
Centre’s emergency depart-
ment case manager capac-
ity in Peterborough.

Town has concerns
about proposal and
existing steam plant
By Keith Gilligan
kgilligan@durhamregion.com
AJAX — A company is consider-
ing building an energy-from-waste
(EFW) facility in Ajax and is eyeing
the existing steam plant as a pos-
sible site.
However, the company, Arbour
Power, doesn’t own the steam plant
and Town staff indicate the site isn’t
for sale. And, the steam plant site
isn’t large enough for the proposed
facility.
Arbour and Dongara Pellet Fac-
tory have filed a proposal with the
provincial environment ministry to
construct the facility. The proposal
is listed on the Environmental Bill
of Rights registry (EBR) and the
companies are asking for a series
of exemptions, including that the
proposal be considered using a less-
stringent environmental screening
process and not a full environmen-
tal assessment.
With the facility, Dongara would
create ‘pellets’ from post-recycling
municipal waste. The pellets would
then be burned in the EFW facility,
creating both steam and electricity.
Dongara has a facility in Vaughan,
where the pellets would be made.
The waste for the pellets would
come from York Region.
Barb Hodgins, a policy plan-
ner with the Town, noted having
the steam plant operating in the
downtown area is a “disincentive”
to neighbouring business owners to
upgrade their properties.
The technology proposed for the
plant is a “new and emerging” one
in North America, Ms. Hodgins
said. A recommendation from staff
requested the MOE not grant any
exemptions. Also, the Town has 27
requirements it would like consid-
ered, such as monitoring air emis-
sions, doing a traffic impact study
and no ‘raw’ waste be brought onto
the site. “Our report suggests a cau-
tionary process,” she said.
Mayor Steve Parish suggested the
MOE allow the exemptions, pro-
vided most of the Town’s require-
ments are addressed.
Other council members didn’t
support that approach, preferring
to stick with the staff recommenda-
tion.
All councillors agreed the steam
plant site needed to be cleaned up.
Ms. Hodgins noted the Town has
laid 20 charges against the steam
plant’s owners for property stan-
dard infractions. Calls to the owner
of the steam plant were not re-
turned.
Mayor Parish noted the represen-
tatives from Sundail Homes, which
is building homes at Bayly Street
and Monarch Avenue, told the Town
that the steam plant is stopping their
plans to construct a pair of high-rise
apartment-style buildings.
Air emissions from the current
operation “isn’t assisting the air
quality in Ajax,” pointing to black
smoke that comes out of the plant
on a regular basis, the mayor stated,
adding it’s “basically a dump in the
middle of our town.”
Wards 1 and 2 Regional Council-
lor Scott Crawford supported the
staff’s original recommendation,
noting an EFW facility would “be
burning York Region’s garbage for
years to come. I’m not sure we want
that as council’s legacy.”
Steven Rowe, an environmental
planner retained by the Town, said,
“This isn’t a pilot plan. It’s a large-
scale facility.
“Part of an EA is proving all these
things out, including a new technol-
ogy,” he added.
Wards 3 and 4 Regional Council-
lor Colleen Jordan said a full EA is
needed, especially with a new tech-
nology.
She said new items are developed
and have “created much larger con-
cerns and had to be pulled from the
market. It’s why we need to take a
cautionary approach.”

100 pages more
than last year
DURHAM — Students have even
more pathways to choose to be suc-
cessful.
With more than 100 additional
pages than last year, the Durham
District School Board’s Pathways to
Student Success booklet should be
in schools by the end of the week,
heard those at the Feb. 5 standing
committee meeting.
The booklet includes information
on programs such as musical theatre
professional, global leadership, and
a culinary program that leads to col-
lege, university or the workplace.
“From a student perceptive, this
book is phenomenal,” said Student
Trustee Alicia Ali. “If it had come
out four years ago, my life may have
been a little different.”
Many pathways to student success
By Stefanie Swinson
sswinson@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — Wiarton
Willie says spring is right
around the corner, which
means it’s time to get clean-
ing.
Recently one local hom-
eowner and one residential
business owner had the op-
portunity to really tidy up.
The Durham Chapter of
the Professional Organizers
in Canada teamed up with
the Metroland Durham Re-
gion Media Group to solicit
contest entries for areas
most in need of organiz-
ing. Winners from business
and residential categories,
who had to submit photos
of their space in need of or-
ganizing, were then chosen
for a complete room make-
over.
The business
space winner,
Kim Cleland, is a
freelance graphic
designer living
in Courtice. She
found she was having a
hard time getting motivated
to work in her home office
because of all the clutter.
For example, among the
contents of her workspace
were boxes filled with bills
over 10 years old. She called
the makeover experience,
“n erve-wracking yet excit-
ing.”
Once the team of organiz-
ers was through, the change
in Ms. Cleland’s home office
was like night and day. Be-
fore, the buildup
time prevented
her from accessing
files she needed
on a daily basis
for work. Now, she
has a functional,
accessible, storage-lined
office that means she can
fully concentrate on her job
hunt. Glenda Muir, profes-
sional organizer, says these
type of work spaces are all
too common. “I think there
are a lot of people who do
have rooms just like Kim’s
and the reason we hear is
because of time,” she says.
“People just don’t have the
time to dedicate to becom-
ing organized. The other
reason is people find it very
overwhelming.”
As for the residential
room winner, Merle Cole
has learned a big lesson
from the cleanup. In fact,
the Oshawa resident has
applied his new-found or-
ganization skills to another
room in his house.
“I now have a place I can
come down and relax and
work on hobbies,” he said.
“I’m not embarrassed to
have people over.”
Professional organizer
Sandy Terry said a key to
good organization is to get
down to it without delay.
“Merle was able to make
decisions quick,” she noted.
“That’s sometimes the bug
bear on these things (clean-
ing up). People have a hard
time choosing what to keep
and what to get rid of.”
Ms. Terry added a good
rule of thumb for maintain-
ing an organized space is to
remove an item for every
item you bring in to the
room.
As for Ms. Cleland’s opin-
ion on the results, she said
on a scale of 1 to 10 it is
“definitely a nine.”
“It’s a great experience
but next time I think I’d
want to be more involved,”
she said. “I think I was a
bit more shell-shocked than
anything. But if they (the
organizers) weren’t here it
wouldn’t have been done.”

Environmentalist
brings his message to
Dunbarton High School
By Crystal Crimi
ccrimi@durhamregion.com
PICKERING — By 2048, all the ocean’s
fish could be gone, environmentalist
David Suzuki told a packed gymnasium
at Dunbarton High School Friday night.
Mr. Suzuki brought his message of
protecting the environment to Pickering
Feb. 9 as part of his ‘If YOU were Prime
Minister...’ national tour. During the
event, hosted by Dunbarton High School
in partnership with Durham Sustain
Ability, Mr. Suzuki
discussed the chal-
lenges the world
faces and collected
votes on environ-
mental issues to
take to Ottawa. His message was heard
loud and clear by some, including Grade
10 student Kyle Watson, who left the
gymnasium more concerned about the
environment.
“I think we should stop greenhouse
gases and things like that and stop peo-
ple from cutting down trees because it
ruins the environment,” said Kyle. He
added we also have to stop polluting.
“I thought it was really good,” said
Stephanie Zerter, a Grade 12 Dunbarton
student. “I think it will probably change
a lot of people’s mind (about) what they
should be doing about it.”
Mr. Suzuki said it has always struck
him when talking to people that what
they want is not the same as politicians
are giving.
“I have never heard a Canadian say
it’s absolutely vital we have a one per
cent decrease in GST,” said Mr. Suzuki.
He said people express concerns over
asthma increases, water quality, and jobs
for the future.
For years, scientists have been warn-
ing about the impact of greenhouse
gases and pollution, and this is definitely
the defining moment, said Mr. Suzuki.
“More recently, we’ve become very
aware of the implications of global
warming,” he said.
Since the Second World War, North
America has been a land of massive con-
sumption, with a big impact on the en-
vironment. In recent years, houses have
become twice as large with less people
living in them.
“A ll of this consumption is coming out
of the earth and that means we have a
much greater footprint on the earth,” he
said.
He described the world as having a
blanket around it that keeps its tem-
perature just right. In Mars, the blanket
causes the temperature to yo-yo from
very hot to very cold - not good for life. In
Ve nus, its very thick and very hot. Now,
earth’s blanket is getting thicker from the
burning of fossil fuels and pollution.
“Earth has had a temperature that is
just the right depth,” he said. To stabi-
lize it, greenhouse emissions have to be
reduced by 90 per cent within decades
so plants can reabsorb carbon being re-
leased. But, some politicians have told
him moving too fast on environmental
initiatives will hurt the economy.
“If the economy’s doing well, maybe
then we can do something about (the
environment) - that’s never made sense
to me,” said Mr. Suzuki. He added the
cost of living with damage being caused
is estimated to cost much more.
Although he was proud when Canada
signed the Kyoto protocol in 2002, the
government is now turning its back on it,
said Mr. Suzuki.
“We’ve got an election coming up and
it’s up to us... to go and ask our candi-
dates what do you plan to do to support
our environment,” he said.
Mr. Suzuki said there is lots we can do,
but politicians want to keep doing the
same. Some countries tax things they
don’t want and cut taxes on things they
do to help change behaviour. He added
Canada has to stop paying tax dollars
to support fossil fuel industries.Some
things everyone can do to help include
leaving the car at home once a week and
not eating meat once a week, said Mr.
Suzuki.
Khalil Walji, a Grade 10 student at
Dunbarton High School and president
of the environmental club, said his group
already knew about some of the environ-
mental initiatives, such as eating meat
once less a week. Next month, the club
is having a movie night, featuring ‘An In-
convenient Truth’, a documentary about
climate change, during which members
will hand out samples of meat substi-
tutes. The group is also studying energy
consumption at the school and doing a
report on it for the principal.

Councillors questioned
on checks and balances
By Erin Hatfield
ehatfield@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — A Durham resident
wants the Region to increase its checks
and balances.
Colin Kemp appeared before the
Region’s finance and administration
committee on Feb. 7 regarding Bill 130,
the Municipal Statute Law Amendment
Act.
He asked the committee to fit the
establishment of an integrity commis-
sioner or an ombudsman into it’s 2007
budget.
He said municipalities need such
a role filled because they are not po-
liced.
“Bill 130 gives municipalities en-
hanced accountability powers to es-
tablish amongst other things, an integ-
rity commissioner and ombudsman,”
said Mr. Kemp, a Scugog resident.
“A four-year term is a long time for
taxpayers to wait to turf out elected of-
ficials who they feel are not performing
up to par,” Mr. Kemp said.
“I believe taxpayers need this service
now more then ever.”
Ajax Mayor Steve Parish made a mo-
tion to refer the suggestion to staff so
they might gather information about
what the role of an ombudsman would
be and how much it would cost.
“None of us have had our training on
Bill 130 yet,” Mayor Parish said. “That
comes in March.”
The motion carried but committee
advised Mr. Kemp that to have an om-
budsman established in 2007 was not
possible.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Liberals guilty of attack ads, too
To the editor:
Re: Feb. 9 letter to the editor.
Is Mae Cudmore for real? She claims that the Conserva-
tive “attack” ads are disparaging to everyone, including the
animals in the zoo.
Does she not remember the terrible attack ads from the
Liberals in the last two federal elections in which Stephen
Harper was portrayed as the scariest person since Dracula
and Adolph Hitler? Really, now, Ms. Cudmore! All the Con-
servative ads do is point out the facts surrounding Stephane
Dion and his foibles. At least these ads are stating facts. The
Liberal ads were trumpeting stuff that was mostly fantasy
to feed the need of people to believe that our current prime
minister was a truly scary monster who would totally destroy
the country and everything for which Canadians stand.
Guess how well that worked out!

Where’s the sheriff
when you need him?
One of my favourite episodes of the
old Andy Griffith series features
Opie, Ron Howard as a boy, being
bullied at school.
His dad, Sheriff Taylor, finds out about
the bullying but doesn’t step in to protect
his son. Instead he tells his son about the
time he was bullied and how he fought
back, which put an end to the bullying.
Opie, being the obedient child, follows
his dad’s advice and his bullying troubles
are quickly over.
Wow, if only life today was like that.
With three boys in elementary school,
bullying is one of the top concerns of my
wife and I. On every visit to the teachers
we ask if our sons play with others in
the yard and if they ever have any prob-
lems we might not hear about. So far, so
good.
Bullying is a big issue with me now
with the story we ran last week about a
Pickering student who was bullied. The
bullying was videotaped and put on the
popular web site, You Tube. As soon as
the video was discovered, it was removed
and the students punished.
What got my blood boiling more than
normal is the child who was bullied had
suffered a stroke at age seven and was
partially paralyzed. We contacted the
family for a comment and they declined.
We respected that decision and also de-
cided not to name the school since it
could identify the student.
The public school board has, so far, re-
fused to say what punishment was hand-
ed down to the cyber-bullying students.
The students were made to apologize to
the family, but residents deserve to know
what punishment was meted out.
Bullying seems to be an accepted so-
cial behaviour among some students,
but it must be stamped out. The boy
convicted in the school killings in Taber,
Alberta was bullied as a child. A trial is
currently under way in Cobourg for a
19-year-old youth charged with killing
a police officer. The court has heard he,
too, was bullied.
These are extreme cases and in no way
are excuses for those two actions. But,
maybe things would have been different
if bullying didn’t exist.
As long as one student feels he or she
is superior to another, bullying will be a
concern. As long as one student is looked
on as different or strange because their
hair is a different colour, bullying will be
a concern. As long as one student feels
he or she needs to show off by denigrat-
ing another student for laughs, bullying
will be a concern.
If only the sheriff was around to ask his
advice today.

Time to elect
chairman
It’s been in the works for years and now it’s time to change
the way the regional chairman’s position is filled in Dur-
ham.
After a razor-thin 15-13 vote at Regional council that saw
nearly all the Oshawa/Ajax/Pickering councillors vote in
favour and almost all others vote against -- Pickering Mayor
Dave Ryan and Whitby Councillor Don Mitchell bucked the
trend -- the Region will now ask the Province to change the
way in which we determine our regional chairman.
Should the Province act on the Region’s recommendation
and back Oshawa MPP Jerry Ouellette’s private member’s bill
to have a region-wide general election for the chairman’s po-
sition, we’ll finally have taxpayers making the decision on the
top job in Durham. That’s the proper course after 88 per cent
said “Yes” to selecting the regional chairman by general vote
in referenda held last fall in Oshawa, Ajax and Pickering.
That’s not meant to criticize current Regional Chairman
Roger Anderson, who has been in the chair for nearly a de-
cade now. Mr. Anderson has done a fine job of representing
Durham’s interests and of filling the No. 1 post for a term with
the Ontario Municipal Association. He is an experienced ad-
ministrator who has done his best to make Durham’s priori-
ties important to the Province and the federal government.
The fact is, however, that he has been selected by 28 indi-
viduals in the past four straight elections. He didn’t even face
a challenge for his position last fall, a situation that would
no doubt change if the post was open for election by all
Durham’s voters.
Election of the regional chairman already exists in Halton
Region, where a race for the position has been a part of the
election process for several terms now. If it can work in Hal-
ton, with its four lower-tier municipalities, why can’t it work
in Durham? Yes, it will involve a concerted effort, strong
campaigning and a substantial budget to run. But the job
merits all of that. Over the past decade -- especially since
the Province downloaded so many more responsibilities to
municipalities -- the demands on the regional chairman and
the expectations that come with the office have dramatically
increased.
It’s a job that demands full public scrutiny and account-
ability. And that can only come when the general public,
which pays the bills, has the final say at the ballot box.

PICKERING — The Pickering
Panthers are still alive and kicking
in their playoff series with the To-
ronto Junior Canadians after pull-
ing off a 4-3 overtime victory in
Game 5 in Toronto on Thursday
night.
Game 6 in the best-of-seven
OHA Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’
Hockey League South Conference
playoff series was played at Toron-
to’s Chesswood Arena on Saturday
(with the result unavailable at press
time). Game 7, if necessary, is at
the Pickering Recreation Complex
tonight (Sunday) at 8:30 p.m.
The Panthers needed a little luck,
not to mention mental toughness,
to pull the Game 5 victory out of the
fire. It all added up to yet another
playoff con-
test of high
emotion and
drama.
“It was un-
believable.
It was back
and forth. I
always said
our hockey
team is tough
to beat. We
proved that with our resilience to-
night,” says Panthers’ head coach
Pat Curcio. “The fight in our players
is second to none.”
The Panthers battled back from
a 3-2 deficit as Toronto scored the
first two goals of the third period.
With less than two minutes to go,
starting goalie Brad Fogal was
pulled for an extra attacker. With a
faceoff in the neutral zone, Curcio
decided to put his goalie back in
the net. The move was a wise one
as Fogal made a game-saving stop
to keep Pickering in the game. The
Panthers finally got sustained pres-
sure in the Toronto zone during the
last minute of play with Fogal on
the bench. And, it paid off with Kris
Belan scoring with 34 seconds left
to send the contest to overtime.
In overtime, Curcio recalled his
pep talk to his troops.
“I said to them, ‘you guys deserve
this, so go finish this game. Get it to
the net and everyone go to the net’.”
And, that’s exactly what hap-
pened on the overtime winner.
Belan won the battle for the puck
and put it to the net where Phil Mc-
Ilhone awaited to swat it home at
the 11:29 mark of the extra frame.
For McIlhone, it was his second
goal of the game, his first coming
on a power-play marker late in the
second period. He also earned an
assist for a three-point night.
Panthers’ captain Richard Scho-
field opened the scoring for the
Panthers in the second period.
Fogal faced 41 shots on goal in
posting the big win.

DURHAM — Police officers involved in two
incidents that left suspects with injuries have
been cleared of any criminal wrongdoing by
the province’s civilian watchdog.
Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Director
James Cornish announced Thursday that the
actions of officers in the incidents -- one an
impaired driving bust that resulted in a man
sustaining a broken jaw in north Durham and
the other a shooting as a suspect fled drug
officers in Oshawa -- were justified, given the
circumstances under which the injuries oc-
curred.
The suspects in both cases are facing crimi-
nal charges, Mr. Cornish noted.
In the first incident, an SIU investigation
began after shots were fired during an at-
tempted bust in downtown Oshawa Oct. 29,
when Drug Enforcement Unit officers stopped
a Cadillac Escalade being driven by Isan Jupi-
ter, 35, of Grenfell Street in Oshawa.
Cops had used their cruisers to box in the
Escalade at the intersection of Gibb and Cen-
tre streets and had exited their vehicles with
guns drawn when the Cadillac sped from the
scene, hitting several cruisers. An officer fired
five shots at the Cadillac, which was found two
days later near Peterborough with traces of
blood inside. An arrest warrant was issued for
Mr. Jupiter, who was taken into custody after
he showed up at hospital in Oshawa almost a
month later seeking treatment for a gunshot
wound to his leg.
“Given a highly volatile and dynamic situ-
ation I am satisfied the subject officer had
reason to believe it was necessary to shoot Mr.
Jupiter’s vehicle to thwart a lethal danger,” Mr.
Cornish said in a statement.
The second incident began Dec. 19 when
police received complaints of an apparently
impaired driver in Brock Township. Officers
confronted a man in the parking lot of a Hwy.
7 restaurant and a struggle ensued when they
tried to take him into custody. The suspect,
47-year-old Robert Janacek, injured his nose
when he and the officers fell to the ground,
according to a synopsis compiled by the SIU.
Mr. Janacek was taken to hospital in Port
Perry for treatment and released. When police
took him to15 Division on Hwy. 12 another
altercation occurred and the man’s jaw was
broken.
“The officer who dealt with Mr. Janacek in
the cells was justified in the use of force to
control him,” Mr. Cornish said.
Durham Regional Police Association Presi-
dent Tom Andrews said the incidents highlight
the pressures facing cops as they do their jobs
each day.
“I think it speaks to the level of violence” of-
ficers are confronted with, he said.
“We get paid to do a dirty job,” Mr. Andrews
said. “I think the public should understand
that nobody wants to get arrested.”
He said the officers involved were subjected
to intense scrutiny by the SIU, an agency that
involves incidents in which civilians are killed
or injured during transactions with police.
The SIU continues to investigate two Dur-
ham incidents, including a traffic accident last
week in Ajax that left a cop and a civilian with
minor injuries.

SIU clears cops involved in impaired arrest, shooting
Oshawa truck plant to produce hybrid pick-up trucks
By Izabela Jaroszynski
ijaroszynski@durhamregion.com
DURHAM — The good news just keeps roll-
ing in for Oshawa.
General Motors announced on Tuesday
that the Oshawa truck assembly plant will be
the first plant in Canada to produce hybrid
vehicles. In addition to the regular Chevrolet
Silverado and GMC Sierra, the plant will soon
begin production of a new two-mode hybrid
version of both trucks.
“We are proud to announce we will build the
hybrid version of our award-winning pickups
in Oshawa,” said Arturo Elias, president of GM
Canada. “GM is making it a top priority to pro-
vide our customers with the widest selection of
green vehicle technologies that can save them
fuel and benefit the environment.”
The list includes the world’s largest fleet of
emission-free hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that
are being produced at the Engineering Centre
in Oshawa and the locally-built E85 flex fuel
Chevy Impala.
According to General Motors, the hybrid
technology in the pickups will optimize fuel
efficiency in both city and highway driving.
Patty Faith, spokeswoman for GM Canada,
says that by awarding the production of the
hybrid technology to the Oshawa truck plant
the company is showing confidence in the
employees and the quality of work they do.
Ms. Faith says the company does not expect
the hybrids to impact on the amount of ve-
hicles being produced at the plant -- which is
already working on overtime -- but that it will
change the mix of trucks coming off the line.
Production will begin sometime in 2008 and
the “greener” vehicles are expected to go on
sale in the fall of next year.

us since the loss of our beloved husband,
father, grandfather & "pappie". Thank-you to
Dr. S. Stern & Marnie for the many years of
kind & supportive medical attention. Thanks
also to Dr. Baker, the 2nd floor nursing staff
of Ajax/Pickering Hospital, & Dr. R. Leader.
Special thanks & appreciation are

Many thanks to Rev. G. Eagle for

MOBILE SHOWROOM
Durham Windows and
Doors Brings Mobile
Showroom To Your Door
Wa yne Hutchison brings to the
replacement window and door busi-
ness a new and long overdue feature.
It’s a Mobile Showroom which just
may be the only one in Canada.
“The day is gone when you car-
ried some brochures and a sample
window to a customer’s home,” ex-
plains Wayne. “So I obtained a retired
North York Mobile Library truck and
installed interior walls along with all
of my window samples.”
When you call Durham Windows
and Doors for a free estimate, Wayne
will show up at your door with his Mo-
bile Showroom which you’ll enter by
way of a sliding patio door.
Inside, displayed on the walls,
are the Vinyl Window Designs series
of vinyl windows which you’re free to
operate and you’ll discover the many
special features including how they
can be cleaned without going outside.
“After being in this business for
26 years, I can honestly say these are
the fi nest windows on the market,”
says Wayne. “They’re triple sealed
to reduce air leakage and come with
heavy duty hardware.”
All Vinyl Window Designs win-
dows come with Low E Glass which
fi lters out the ultraviolet rays keep-
ing your home cooler in the summer
and eliminate fading of your curtains,
drapes and furniture.
All of the windows come with a
lifetime warranty on the frame, hard-
ware and glass.
Wa yne would also like his cus-
tomers to know that he does all of the
estimates personally, eliminating the
cost of a salesperson.
Durham Windows and Doors also
does all of its own installations, which
ensures that every customer gets a high
quality job done at the best possible
price.
Durham Windows and Doors is
located at 696 King St. W. in Oshawa.

City of Pickering offering arts, sports March Break camps
Half day or full-day
programs available
next month
PICKERING — The City of Pickering once
again is offering March Break camps.
The camps run daily from March 12 to
March 16.
Register your child(ren) for a week of
fun at the Pickering Recreation Complex
in the half-day or full-day programs.
Mini Pidaca is a half-day camp for chil-
dren ages three to five and runs from 9:30
a.m. to 12 noon daily and operates out of
the Creative Centre. Campers enjoy a daily
swim, exciting arts and crafts, music and
sing-a-longs and indoor games planned
for the week.
Arts Camp and Sports Camp are full-day
programs that run from 9 a.m. until 3:15
p.m. and are for children five to 12 years
of age. Arts camp offers activities from arts
and crafts to drama and creative games.
Sports Campers learn the fundamentals
of soccer, floor hockey, basketball and in-
door games.
Daily bus transportation to and from
camp is provided for Arts and Sports
Campers.
There is also an Extend-a-Camp for full-
day campers. You may drop your child off
at the Creative Centre between 7 and 9
a.m. and pick them up between 3:15 and
6 p.m. Children enjoy active games, quiet
games, movies and activities at this before
and after Arts or Sports camp.
Camp staff are trained and qualified to
ensure that your child(ren) are safe and
enjoy their week learning, laughing and
making friends along the way.
